"A once-popular boutique dessert shop that opened in 2007 on Magazine Street, I knew Sucre for its macarons and other picture-perfect confections; it expanded to two more shops and a French Quarter restaurant, Salon by Sucre, but abruptly closed all locations in June 2019. The shutdown followed a NOLA.com report revealing that co-founder Tariq Hanna had resigned in August 2018 after allegations of sexual misconduct—Hanna remained a partial owner—and the company said it was closing after a year of failing to reach financial profitability, with later bankruptcy filings showing declining sales amid mounting expenses. Company records list Aaron Motwani as the current owner, known for his fried-chicken-and-daiquiri chain Willie's Chicken Shack and his family's large French Quarter real estate holdings. An Instagram story announcing the relaunch says Sucre will reopen in its original Magazine Street location on December 1, 2020, transformed into a "destination dessert and coffee boutique with a sophisticated new atmosphere" led by Ayesha Motwani and executive pastry chef Ashley McMillan, who previously worked as Sucre’s executive pastry chef." - Clair Lorell
