Let me start by saying it's not for everyone. Sugarfish operates on what seems to be a traditional Japanese style, so if you aren't a sushi lover or you only eat rolls, or you're looking for the fast food or novelty items - this is not the place for you. If you are someone who compares AYCE Sushi places to this, this is also not the place for you.
Also, the tables are small and seating is limited, and the wait time can be long, I don't think they take reservations, you just put your name on a list, so if these things bother you, and detracts from how good the sushi or the rest of the experience is, maybe eat somewhere else.
Sugarfish has become our spot and we come here quite often with our friend.. We always do beer, sake, and "Don't think, Just eat" option which is basically like a 'pre-fixe' in which items are selected for you throughout, and different plates/courses are brought to you at a time. (They're fast, so when you're almost done with one, you're getting your next one).
I was absolutely shocked and still continue to be with how amazing the quality and taste is, especially for the price and how generous. It's absolute eating pleasure from start to finish. You can also order nigiri and other items a la carte if you don't want to choose this, or they have other preset courses depending on what you like and how much you think you can eat.
Each piece of fish is absolutely fresh and delicious. The first thing you get is Edamame, which is fine, after that comes this chopped tuna sashimi in a ponzu sauce. SO delicious and perfect start before the rest. So amazing, delicate, and fresh. You never know how good regular tuna can be, this simple starting dish is a great reflection of the quality of their fish.
The next course is my favourite plate. You get 6 pieces of nigiri, which include 2 pieces of Toro (fatty tuna belly), 2 albacore (Pretty sure that's what it is) and 2 salmon with a special khombu leaf underneath - the taste is so unique and amazing. O.M.G. I look forward to this plate every time I think about Sugarfish that I can practically smell and taste it as I'm writing this. The rice is served fresh and you feel how warm it is under the fish, which is the perfect temperature. The fish pieces are generous and absolutely melt in your mouth. The toro is an absolute delicacy. It's buttery and just....amazing. I personally look forward to the salmon because the taste of the khombu leaf underneath makes is so unique, but everything is amazing. PLEASE DON'T FLOOD IT IN SOY SAUCE. :D
Next course is one of their hand rolls. I'm not a hand roll person, but their hand rolls are spectacular. They make it to service, so again, rice is warm. I think the first hand roll is toro - amazing, and the one after the next nigiri course is the lobster hand roll. You never realize how good hand rolls can be typically, until you realize just how perfectly every aspect of that bite is when you taste it altogether.
The next course is another 6 pieces of nigiri, 2 each. You get another kind of chutoro (tuna belly), sea bream, and pink lobster. Once again, the chutoro absolutely melts into this delicate, silky, flavour in your mouth. The sea bream is interesting and very hard to describe the flavour. It has a shiso leaf underneath that has a cumin type taste. Very interesting. The pink lobster is soft and sweet, not rubbery at all. Next is that amazing lobster hand roll, and the last course, if you can make it, (I try not eat the whole day in hopes of making sure I make it through the whole meal) is anago, which is grilled eel. I'm not exactly sure what the difference is, but I suppose my typical American way prefers the taste of unagi, which to me I guess I'm used to, tastes more charred/grilled, however, the anago is so fresh and delicate, that just melts.
These are also just as amazing: Ikura - fresh salmon eggs; albacore belly; Toro (sea urchin).

This is how much we love Sugarfish, we could go on all day about how good we think it is. You can spend X amount of dollars on Subpar sushi, or here, where the quality is excellent. I find it difficult to understand it when people say they don't like Sugarfish if they are true sushi lovers. If we move out of California, we'll be very sad to leave this behind.
