My favorite SUGARFISH location as the waiting time is usually way lower than in other locations like SoHo. Just the best and most authentic Japanese sushi, love the no-tipping policy. I'm definitely coming back!

I went to sugarfish after a show at Beacon Theatre and was told that the wait would be about an hour and a half. We were able to get seats at the bar in about 30 minutes. Definitely it’s definitely a vibe inside. It’s a great atmosphere if you’re looking to have a nice night out. All the dishes we had were great, but the service was outstanding. This is a no tipping establishment, so I have to give a particular shout out to Lemuel. I’ve been out to eat countless times and rarely have I had service this quick and attentive. He was actually reading our minds, pulling plates out from behind the bar before we could finish our sentences lmao. This spot checks off all the boxes!

Had been many years ago to the Midtown location, and remembered really liking it—so when some friends wanted to do dinner, I was optimistic. I get omakase fairly frequently at other places—in New York and elsewhere—and this was by far the most disappointing. To start, I find it odd that there are 2 pieces of so many of the nigiri as opposed to 12+ unique pieces you’d get at other places, but I guess this is how they do the volume of customers they do. I didn’t find any of the pieces to have any interesting or memorable accompaniments to bring out the flavors, except for one which a few of us specifically thought tasted like soap 🤢 Also found it really annoying how poorly the nigiri was packed—yes, it should be warm/room temp, but there’s no reason we should all be scooping up half of the rice after simply touching a piece. The service was awkward and not exactly warm… they brought the second round before any of us had even finished the first, which was so weird. I’ll give one server a pass because she was clearly onboarding, but typically you’d think the server training her would show her what to do vs. what *not* to do 😅 We had to ask a few times for water, and they forgot about our bottle of wine until we asked a second time. The last bizarre thing worth mentioning—for a place that doesn’t take reservations, it’s kind of ridiculous that they won’t even take a phone number and let you go next door for a drink whilst waiting around for 30+ minutes for a table. We’re all New Yorkers, we’re used to a wait…but it feels borderline uncivilized that—since there isn’t even space to get a drink at *their bar*—we weren’t able to comfortably wait anywhere else, either 😅 Simply unnecessary. I’d highly recommend one of the many smaller, more high quality omakase places in the city instead of this overrated spot 😳

Like any other Sugarfish location. Tip is alr included in price. Staff are quite nice :) No spicy fish and no fresh wasabi (bummer).

This was recommended as the best sushi place in NYC. I am not sure I can agree with that. It has a serve and get out vibe. There are a few fixed plates of sushi on the menus from $40 to $70. The wine is average for the price. The food is excellent quality but on the smaller portion size for what you are paying. There is no tipping in this restaurant which I guess is good as tipping seems to be out of hand in other restaurants in NYC.

I’ve been to a lot of locations of sugar fish throughout the northeast and California and this is by far my favorite. The fish here for some reason is exceptionally fresh and tastes amazing. Even more importantly is that the service is amazing. I’ve had the same server my last two times and he is incredibly kind and awesome- he goes by “Lambo”. Really appreciate this kind of service. Also need to shout out, Christian, who was really kind in helping me celebrate my husband’s birthday.

I’ve been to this restaurant before and have enjoyed both the food and the service, which is why this experience was particularly disappointing. My partner and I ordered the Nozawa Trust Me ($60 per person). We were told the restaurant had run out of bluefin otoro and were offered a replacement of either salmon or shrimp. While we understand that items can sell out, bluefin otoro is one of the best, if not the best of this package. We chose salmon rather than leaving, as we had already waited some time to be seated. Unfortunately, when it arrived, the substitution consisted of exactly two pieces of salmon, which felt underwhelming and not at all equivalent to what was not available. Replacing an ~$18 item with two pieces of salmon that typically cost about $7.50 didn’t feel like a fair substitution or what a reputable restaurant would do. We brought this up to the manager, John, but after he looked into it, we were told nothing could be done. That response was pretty disappointing. A better approach would have been to compensate in quantity or adjust the price accordingly.

I have introduced sugar fish to many places after I was recommended by my neighbors to go. Everyone has been thrilled as I was. Reasonable and super delicious! Hard to be that

My brother and I, having both eaten sushi and sashimi at various places around the world, found our dinner at this Sugarfish by Sushi Nozawa in UWS one of the top experiences we've had. Despite no reservation (note they don't accept) and it was Saturday night, we were able to get immediately seated at the bar. While quite dark requiring our iPhone lights to read the menu, we debated which Omakase selection (i.e., "entrusting to the chef") to go for, either "The Nozawa Trust Me" or their largest, super duper "Don't Think. Just Eat. Trust Me." Especially considering tip is included in the price and our propensity to "go for it" on foodie experiences, (especially sushi-related,) we wisely selected the "Don't Think. Just Eat" Omakase! As they state, it's similar to what Nozawa served his regulars at Studio City's Sushi Nozawa. Here what we were served (see pics): * Edamame * Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi with Ponzu and Chives, an outstanding fish course that I will never forget which was sublime, refreshing, and the perfect start to the meal * 6 pieces of Nigiri, including 2 pieces each of amazing Otoro (OMG!), Albacore with House Ponzu, and Salmon with Sesame * Toro Hand Roll * 6 pieces of Nigiri, including 2 pieces each of wonderful Chutoro, Sea Bream Skin, and Sea Scallop with Hokkaido Soy Sauce * Lobster Hand Roll (note no pic, but similarly prepared to Toro) * Unagi (i.e., freshwater eel) Nigiri, exquisite This list can't convey how sensational every item was! We savored every piece! While I comment on the woman Server who was brought several of the courses and quickly explained what each was almost exclusively to my brother at a level that made it impossible for either of us to hear what she was saying, we still had excellent service. (Apologies if I inadvertently omitted a descriptive component of an item.) To resolve, the superb Bartender/Waiter who took our order helped as our "Sugarfish Sherpa" repeating to both of us at an audible level what each course was! He made the service flawless! As far as our drinks, my brother enjoyed Sake, but I had Iced Matcha, which for me well complemented the meal. Look forward to returning to Sugarfish, if not this UWS location then another one! Recommend checking it out and going for the largest Omakase you can afford for a most memorable experience. It's a fair price and totally worth it! Trust them!

I walked in for lunch and did the 45$ lunch special. I sat at the bar and was promptly seated and served. I'm allergic to edamame and asked to replace that with something else but there wasn't anything they were able to substitute which was very disappointing. I also ordered a white wine that never came. Servers very inattentive and forgetful. Food was decent -- not the best or worst sushi I've ever had. Don't think I'll be back given the service and so many great sushi options on the UWS.

I love Sugarfish. Even though it was a Friday night, we didn't have to wait at 5:30 PM. We tried two of the tasting menus. The fish was absolutely fantastic. Even the shrimp, which I generally don't like on nigiri, was tender and flavorful. The best of the night was the otoro, but the tuna sashimi was also good, and their handrolls are also spectacular. They do rice so much better than other sushi places - it is warm and flavorful with a citrus zing. Service: Very good. I like that they include tip in the price. Every server was willing to help by clearing plates, dropping off the check, getting the check, water, and it didn't seem that there were strict roles for the service, but everyone was very attentive. I felt very taken care of, but there was no hovering. They also were knowledgeable about the fish and the dishes. Ambiance: A cool, nicely lit sushi bar vibe with lots of light wood. It was a bit cold for my taste, and I wouldn't call it cozy, but very appropriate for a sushi bar.

Went with a couple of friends to try out the UWS location. As they do not take reservation, it took over an hour for a table for 4 on Saturday night. But the wait was worth it. We each ordered the Trust Me set and added a few special items. Items arrived 3 or 4 pieces at a time, a good pace to enjoy and not feeling rushed. Sushi rice came out lukewarm instead of cool or cold at comparable - such a difference. For quality and value, I can see this as a go to place for sushi on the UWS. There is just one minor suggestion. Up the lighting 10/20%. The dinning room just feels so dark.

For my thirty-first birthday I received a $100 gift certificate to Sugarfish by Sushi Nozawa. I was excited because I already knew that Sugarfish was an excellent restaurant. I chose to go on a Monday in the late afternoon and I wasn't embarrassed to go on my own. When I walked in I wasn't disappointed by the atmosphere and the feng shui of the space. The restaurant had beautiful pictures that were chosen by the chef's wife who helped with the design. I took a secial liking to the photograph of the men on what looked like a fishing boat. I was almost instantly seated at a comforable table/booth after being given the choice of a table or the bar. I was given a menu and since it was my first experience dining there, they explained it and how it worked. I was also told that it was their 15th anniversary. (Congratulations!!) so there was an option on the menu called 15 for 15, which was around $100. I knew instantly that I needed to order this off the menu. After I placed my order I was instantly given the "Ruth Reichl treatment". Everyone was really attentive down to the last detail. The meal started off with edamame, ginger, soy sauce, and the most beautifuly piped wasabi. I've never had wasabi like this before. It wasn't too spicy and it was a little sweet. I believe this is the way Wasabi was supposed to taste like and it might have even been made "in house" and not store bought. It was meant to look like a flower. The second course included a pink lobster sashimi and tuna sashimi. Before then I've never had pink lobster sashimi but it was delectable. It was an interesting combonation of sweet and savory. The tuna sashimi was marinated in soy sauce and green onion. It was mouthwatering and distinctly reminded me of tuna tartare. The presenation was also incredible. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to eat the eyes and the shell or not but opted out. I'm an adventerous eater, but not to that extent. The third course were two pieces of salmon sushi and (I believe) two pieces of Pacific Herring Sushi. The flavors were enjoyable and I've never had anything like it. The fish was delicious and the rice wasn't too sticky and it was warm so I could tell that it was freshly made. The fourth course was (I believe ) an uni handroll. I can't even begin to explain how heavenly it was. The flavor was incredible, the fish of course was fresh, and I might come back just to order another one. I love uni. The fifth course was a piece of spicy tuna sushi wrapped in seaweed with a green garnish and a piece of ikura sushi. I'm a huge fan of ikura so that was a favorite and my favorite kind of sushi is spicy tuna so this was a winning pair. The texture of the spicy tuna was the perfect juxtoposition alongside the ikura because it was soft and melty whereas you could pop the ikura bubbles in your mouth. The sixth course was a salmon salad with fennel and cabbage. It was served with a rice vinnegar which was tart but not too much. I really appreciated how they used presentation, flavor, and texture to their advantage. There was a good crunch within the salad but the softness of the salmon really balanced it out. For the seventh course I was served one piece of tuna sushi, one piece of a silver fish sushi, a (I believe) one piece of New Zealand Sea Bream Sushi, and one piece of lightly toasted (I believe) yellowtale sushi. It felt like my mouth had died and went to heaven because the food was just that good. However, I was not prepared for how divine the eighth and final course would be which was a lobster hand roll. I almost instantly wanted another one despite how full I was. At the end of my meal two of the waitresses came to me and asked for feedback I also learned that the chef wanted my thoughts, which I greatly appreciated. I remember saying something along the lines of "If I died today in this moment, the fish that I ate would make my life worth living." I also said that before this experience I loved sushi but I didn't quite understand it, I said now I understand how sushi is an art, a delicacy, a cultural experience, and why it's a beloved dish for many.

New SUGARFISH on the upper west side. Place can seat a lot of patrons and the service was excellent. Got the Nozawa Trust Me and every piece was executed perfectly. Ordered an extra tuna hand roll. I like that the extra add ons are very fairly priced. Tip is included in the bill. Recommend.

Solid new location for Sugarfish on the UWS. Staff was friendly. Lots of seating available and I think this location hasn't been fully discovered yet or else it would be insanely packed. I'd be back if I am in the area.

Waiting for table: 1 hour 15 minutes, no reservations accepted. Vibe: Cool, modern sushi house. Perfect for: First dates or any date night. Small group of friends. Menu Highlight: Trust Me portion. Try it! Comparison: Closest experience to sushi in Japan. Taste: Fish melts in mouth, phenomenal. Overall: Highly recommend, will be back.

Sugarfish is a pioneer in the mid-tier sushi market. Established in California in 2008 by Kazunori Nozawa, a classically trained sushi chef, it has since expanded to 17 locations across California and NYC. There's a lot to like about this chain. Sugarfish is extremely affordable for "omakase" -- or in this case, really just a set menu that's the same for all comers. It's a few steps up from grocery store sushi and it appeals to the masses. The neta used is all "approachable", e.g. different cuts of tuna, salmon, etc..., and it's of decent quality. Although gratuity is built into the pricing (and those who oppose such policies argue that without incentives, indifferent service is inevitable), all wait staff on our visit were utterly gracious, lovely, and on top of things. And the space is attractive enough for dates: a sleek midcentury-esque interior with warm wood panels. At the end of the day, though, Sugarfish is the equivalent of a P.F. Chang's or Benihaha: It's sushi for gringos, not for those who know and appreciate the real thing. The all-important rice used for the shari is not short grain or even medium short grain; it is medium to long grain rice, which does not hold together in the same way that proper sushi rice does. Shari was too loosely pressed in oddly, irregularly square-ish shaped nigiri. It was served far warmer than is standard in our hand rolls -- almost hot. Neta was roughly, poorly cut in ragged squares, though the fish was of a high enough quality that there weren't fibrous strings. For awareness, assembled nigiri comes without the standard dab of wasabi between neta and shari, so you'll want to apply your own. All four members of our party ordered the "Trust Me" set meal ($46.00), which included: Edamame Tuna Sashimi - ponzu and chives Albacore Sushi - ponzu and chives, 2-pc Salmon Sushi - toasted sesame, 2-pc Toro Hand Roll Japanese Yellowtail* Sushi - lemon, 1 pc Sea Bass Sushi - yuzu ponzu, 1-pc Blue & Dungeness Crab Hand Roll This was the perfect amount of food for the two adults and the 12-year old in the party. Our 9-year old was uncomfortably stuffed and could not finish her final hand roll. As of 2024, NYC has so many truly excellent options at or near this price range that I can't see myself returning... unless the progeny and their friends beg for it. (The restaurant is very kid friendly and many of our 12-year-old's friends call Sugarfish their favorite sushi restaurant.) To judge by the long lines and long waits on weekends, they'll have plenty of business without us!

Service was great and so helpful! Came in after a night at the opera and was famished, almost to the point I couldn't look at a menu. The staff gave great recommendations and took care of us. Food came out semi quickly at a nice pace. Ambiance is lovely here, a great date night spot. The sushi was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend to try once if you're in the area!

This is my favorite restaurant in the world. The Nozawa Trust me is 8 courses of the best sushi you've ever had in your life. The service is great, and the restaurant has a great vibe. I would give this 6 stars if I could. If you haven't been here, you need to go.

It doesn't matter how good the food is when you have shady management. I left my credit card and the next day I went to get it, but they would not give it to me. They stated that my card was allegedly "locked in the safe" and they did not have a way to open it because a certain manager is not there. I let them know that I don't live in New York and that I'm flying home the next day. They assured me they would mail it. Since I had my credit card memorized, I dined there for a second day in a row. And I needed to use it for other things, but luckily other places took Apple Pay! Well as it turns out, the company now refuses to mail my card as promised ( & I flew home). I was told by the guy who called me back "I don't feel comfortable mailing it." And an email was sent stating, "Unfortunately, we cannot mail the card for safety reasons and to prevent any frauds or scams." So let me get this straight: I show up and you don't give me my card. Then you take back your word that you'll mail it because it's unsafe? So is safer with you holding onto it? "Frauds or scams" mailing my cc? Really?! Because every single credit card company has mailed every single credit card that ever went out to any single household, ever!! I feel crazy here but it seems to me that if they lock cards up in a safe, then they need to have someone there at all times to open the safe so that when a customer arrives, they can actually get their card. Or if not then maybe make amends and mail the damn card! And if a customer asks for their card to be returned via mail, then that's their call. Don't hold the card hostage because you don't "feel comfortable." Seems shady!!

Delicious, fresh, and satisfying every time we've come here. Their take out offers a cute box that is an enjoyable experience to open and munch. Everything we've tried was tasty. Highly recommend!

One of the best sushi restaurants in the city ever. It has gotten mid level reviews by people wanting a full Japanese dinner. Sugarfish's business model is great. They just serve sushi and sashimi and some alcohol. It melts in your mouth. You will not be disappointed.

We are here now and we couldn't be more happy. . Wendy is our server and she couldn't be more pleasant and kind and helpful. I have had the pleasure of her presence when she worked downtown and she's now on the upper west and I speak for the whole upper west when I say; we are fortunate to have her Sugarfish, you're fortunate to have her on your side. I'd be remiss to not mention others that have helped me too; Judy, James, Riley, Jin and Sam. They all deserve recognition as well. Thanks for such a great experience.

I had a fun dinner with friends here. It wasn't too busy on a weekday for early dinner. We all got the Trust Me set menu. It was a lot of food and honestly I felt slightly overstuffed and probably should have gone for the Lite version. Two of us really enjoyed all the courses, and we liked how soft the fish was. Our other two friends felt the texture of the fish was way too soft and felt this was not their favorite sushi. We all agreed the toro was the best course.

Sugarfish doesn't offer very complex rolls, but the quality of the fish and the structure of the rolls and nigiri prove that simple is best. You truly taste the how delicious each piece of fish is as it stands on its own, and the combination of the warm rice with the cool fish brings the meal to a level I didn't even realize was missing from most sushi. Sugarfish is also great at pairing light seasonings with fish to enhance the flavor. The Trust Me experience is a great size and a great price and is coursed to feel like an omakase experience. The fish also travels well as they pack it in a bento-like box for takeout. A great sushi experience and a good price!!

My friend and I came to Sugarfish, and she was very surprised that this was my first time at Sugarfish, and after coming I see why. It was a great experience, with wonderful quality fish, and for a totally reasonable price. The hand roll was my favorite, but everything was great. I see why this is a notable spot, would definitely come back!

I will never stop coming here!!!! Sugarfish has the most AMAZING rice; I really wish they had a side of rice on the menu, but sadly they do not. Also, I think their cucumber cut rolls are important to discuss. I've never really enjoyed cucumber rolls from anywhere but here I make sure to always get at least one order, because they are so good!!!!!!!! The cucumber is very crunchy and tasteful and I would give the overall roll a 10/10. I also love their salmon and tuna hand rolls; the seaweed is always crispy and the inside tastes like heaven. I've never tried the trust me menu, but it is something I hope to do in the near future!! Also, the service and ambiance are great as always.

Quiet night when we went. Directly across from Beacon Theater. Service was perfect, efficient and attentive. Food was very fresh. Not too many vegan options though. Modern and clean aesthetic.

Little update to my glowing review. Although I'm leaving the five stars because I ultimately still love Sugar fish and have been almost a weekly visitor to one of their locations for years. However, the last two times we've visited the New UWS location there's been a glitch in the Matrix. Last week they brought out the wrong order placed it in front of us and then whisk it away after we had a bite thinking it was ours. Bad call and not cool. And last night, even though we both ordered the Nozowa Trust Me, there was a huge wait for mine every time my wife was served hers. Over a ten minute delay on all my dishes. Not only did it continue like that but no one fixed the issue. Super not cool. Management needs to step up to the bat and right issues like this. I know this is a relatively new SF but to be as good as their other restaurants they need to get it together or they will start loosing long time customers like us. Very unfortunate. We'll go again next weekend and test out the waters.

All the staff were helpful - although I love sushi, my hubby had not really experienced true sushi. We ordered the Nowaza Trust Me and loved it. They patiently explained each dish as it arrived and answered all questions. Lovely atmosphere also.

The sushi is fantastic, some of the best I've had. The interiors are warm and cozy but still work if you're eating with kids (we had our 4 and 6 year old with us). Can't recommend enough. Servers are attentive and helpful.

Love a tasting menu and the staff is very kind with questions and concerns. I really appreciated how fresh and simple each taste was, but I think I was looking for more. Wonderful, high quality fish will keep me coming back but I think I was looking for more wowing flavors

I've always loved SUGARFISH and I've been an avid customer for the last decade, starting with their locations in LA and now NYC. SUGARFISH is a unique sushi experience and sometimes when I'm craving sushi, I just want SUGARFISH specifically. This UWS location, however, is consistently troubled in keeping an appropriate amount of fish in their kitchen which is weird for a restaurant. I've been to this location probably a dozen times and they always seem to run out of some variety of fish on weekends. Tonight, they told us they only ran out of tuna while we waited 45 minutes for a table, to be seated and learn that they actually ran out of quite literally ALL of the nigiri, most of the specials, and all of the sashimi except 1, leaving only hand rolls and cut rolls. Due to the lack of stock, they decided to not serve any Trust Me's which we also weren't told until seated. Also they assured us there would be salmon and about halfway through our dining experience they did in fact run out of salmon. While I was willing to dine in with the limited options, the miscommunication among the staff was disappointing because I would have left if I would have known they were going to run out of everything. Weird experience overall, but the staff was clearly stressed so we tried not to give anyone a hard time. But in the end it was quite annoying to see that they charged us for a drink on our tab that we did not order and we're still waiting on a refund. This place is always a full house on weekends, maybe you guys should start ordering enough food to serve your paying customers. Would recommend going to just about any other location in NYC.

This place had some of the best sushi I've ever had and I was visiting from out of town. Would highly recommend. Service was great as well.

Lovely atmosphere, delicious food. I ate here with a buddy just before closing on a Sunday night. Enjoyed it so much I had an early dinner on Monday to try some items I missed on Sunday! Crispy, fresh nori and tender fish made this a real treat.

Sugarfish is and will always be one of my favorite restaurants to have dinner. I would go to the Los Angeles location in Calabasas very often when I was living there. Now that they've opened one up on the UWS I couldn't be happier! This location is beautiful, clean, has excellent service, and an amazing staff. As always the food did not disappoint. All the fish was so fresh and tasted of the highest quality. I cannot wait to bring friends who have never been to this location in the city. I cannot stress how amazing it is!!! You have to go and try it for yourselves!!! Sincerely, a very satisfied customer.

Very very good, the fish was fresh and I thought the restaurant itself was really nice. Service was great and attentive, the only real thing that could use improvement is the consistency of the rice could be better. Falls apart too easily for it to be sushi rice. Will definitely go back though cause of how good the fish was!

Sugarfish is the most consistent and best restaurant in my opinion. Every single bite is excellent and you will never have a bad meal here. No reservations so except a little wait but it will be worth it!

We are from California and this is by far some of the best sushi we have ever had! The sushi was like butter, the rice was fabulous and who even the ginger was outstanding!!!

Fish is fresh but dull. I got the large Omakase and instead of variety it was two pieces of seven types of fish. Restaurant extremely noisy. I was at bar and service was excellent. My dinner neighbor called it the Starbucks of Sushi. Long for Nonaka (nearby, closed recently) where every piece was a treat. This is not Omakase as in special treats. This is assembly line sushi, but decent quality.

I'm obsessed. A friend first introduced me to Sugarfish a couple years ago and I wasn't sure if I'd like it as I've historically been hit or miss on sushi, but this sushi is so delicious I want to go back again and again. The fish is all so tender and melts in your mouth and the rice is amazing. Deliciously flavored and served warm - yum! Everything is great, but the hand rolls are the real star in my opinion. I always get either the Trust Me or Nozawa Trust me and both the toro and crab hand rolls are amazing. The menu is very classic and simple, no crazy themed rolls, but if you like delicious simple sushi that is fresh and well prepared, don't miss Sugarfish! UWS location also has a very large waiting area, which is less congested than some other locations.

Excellent food and service. All in pricing is nice lots of food!! I got the Trust Me is always good. Comes in a few different sizes based on your hunger level.

Japanese fufu fusion. Quality was good. Service was very good. Ambiance was loud. One & done for Us.

We have been to sugar fish sooooo many time and always love it. But today when I asked for additional a la cart piece (something that I do every time) the waiter refused to give me what I asked for and upsold me on a piece that was triple the price of every other one, With out telling me the price. When the check came and I asked him what happened he said that there was nothing he could do, taking no ownership over his mess up. I will never go back again.

Kind of a difficult review to write. First of all the food was fine every thing was fresh and good. The place was attractive and I came solo at 7:50 on a thursday and scored the last seat at the bar. I went for the top tier menu and it soon seemed to be me they weren't what level diner they were expecting. I had one person explaining m he was our server but we had many bring my dishes. My Nigori was poured but the cap was left on (I looked around others bottles were left uncapped) . I expected my cup would be refilled? Presentation was uninspired and I frequently had to ask what I was being served. Two rolls were served were they Hoso-Maki or Temaki or just a tube? When Anagi was served I was just told it was eel not what kind. Now my biggest Gripe the Sushi. The rice on the sushi was not firmly pressed. so when you turned the roll to put it in the soy the rice fell off. The Oo-toro fell apart as I turned it. I remarked this the a Japanese person next to me and they agreed . THe environment felt unintimate i'm sorry to say.

What a welcome addition to the UWS. Service from their well trained staff was exceptional. Food fresh and a delight. A wonderful warm and inviting space. We had the good fortune of being attended to by Matthew who seemed to be the conductor of this well tuned orchestra. One suggestio, those of us of a certain age could use more light to read the menu and see what we are eating. Maybe make it a bit brighter through 730 and then turn the lights down for the cool kids. I had been wanting to try Sugarfish for a while and, when I learned they had a new place on the UWS, I went for lunch today. Overall it was disappointing. This a one and done for me. At 2:30 PM the restaurant wasn't busy. I was the only person sitting at the bar. I couldn't believe they didn't offer hot sake, only 3 cold sake choices; so I settled for a beer. Almost all sushi places offer hot sake. The restaurant itself was pleasant and the service was excellent, but most of the food was overpriced and disappointing with very little imagination and some skimpiness. I ordered the Nozawa Turst me ($50) which consisted of 10 courses, and Ankimo sashimi because I wanted try as much as possible. At the beginning they give you edamame, which was nice to eat in between courses. Then the Tuna Sashimi was delicious. After that, it was slowly downhill. It was mostly nigiri and a couple of rolls. None of the fish nor rice were seasoned very well, and the rice just fell apart. Although it tasted fine, it was unmanageable. I couldn't even get it from the soy sauce to my plate without losing half of it. It definitely was a struggle. The nigiri was too many fish that tasted similar - not much variety. The first handroll (toro) was fine, but the second one and the last item, crab handroll, was terrible. I didn't even eat it. It was just poorly seasoned, mashed up crab. The price they charged for the ankimo ($11.75) was a disgrace. It was a little, mashed up ball of monkfish served with a sauce that was impossible to eat with chopsticks (there was no silverware). Between using my hands and the chopsticks, I managed to eat most of it. I can go to Domo and get large pieces of monkfish in a nice sauce for less money than that. Even though this is a no tipping place, it is still overpriced for what you get. Also, I seldom get indigestion from sushi, but I did with this meal. At most sushi places I enjoy the wide variety of choices. Not so at this place. The menu is very limited. As stated above, it is time to move on.

Food was amazing, staff was the friendliest, and the ambience is to die for it is low lighting and nice to sit in.

The sushi is fresh and good. We have been many times where we were always able to order a side of rice for my kids to eat with their sashimi. This time the waitress said they can only have a bowl of rice with cooked fish, not raw. I couldn't believe this was actually a policy until she had the manager come to tell us the same thing. Ridiculous they would enforce such a ridiculous rule for children and will go to a different sushi restaurant that is more accommodating to families.

i'm here now and this place is jus amazing. the meal is as close to a "perfect" meal as possible. it's that good. if you're fortunate to have emma, miranda and or frank serve you; you are lucky. they are the kindest and most attentive servers. they represent the sugarfish brand well and NOZAWA, you're fortunate to have all three of them on your side. sincerely. love love love this place.
