Fried Chicken and Real Deal Southern Plates Descend Into Downtown | Eater San Diego

"A slice of the South has arrived on Fourth Avenue with this new 130-seat concept from owner Ron Suelo of North Park’s StreetCar Merchants. I found StreetCar’s signature fried chicken available here alongside a soul-affirming menu of authentic Southern favorites, including po’ boys, seafood gumbo, chicken gizzards, collard greens with smoked ham hock, New Orleans barbecue shrimp and a Memphis-style spaghetti topped with pulled pork. The brunch menu is served all day, so bourbon pecan pancakes and fried chicken with waffles are available any time. There’s a full bar focused on New Orleans classics like daiquiris and hurricanes. The space is currently open 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., seats 130 with a sidewalk patio pending, and plans to extend evening hours and add a weekday 3–6 p.m. happy hour." - Candice Woo

The food was fresh and good! Staff friendly! We went on a Sunday and they had gospel music playing, which I enjoyed. The new suga hot chicken was really good. We will be back when we are in the area!!!

Google
A nice cozy spot for couples, and friends hanging out or just having some good ole comfortable southern food and listening to some live music. This was my first visit and I enjoyed the attentiveness of the waitress. The food was hot and delicious. My only negative was the mac and cheese was bland BUT overall I would go back for the catfish and the atmosphere. Next time I will try the wings. Also, parking is not an issue which is a plus.

I am a homebound individual who has been longing to try the food at Sugashack. Today I was able to order dinner and it did not disappoint. Since this was my first time, everything was delicious (pork chops w/ dressing and greens). I also ordered two other meals and they were delicious I was told as well. The portions size were well worth the money. I will definitely order from them again. Looking forward to a dine in experience soon.

Google
It was my first visit here and Miss E greeted me warmly and led me to her section. She was very professional, gave great suggestions, topped off my drinks without me having to ask her, and checked on me constantly to ensure everything was to my liking! Her customer service skills are top notch! I ordered a 5 piece wing plate with a double side of yams and a sweet tea! The wings were perfectly prepared and amazing, the yams are such a simple dish that can easily turn into mush, but not here at the SugaShack! It was perfect! Come here and enjoy Memphis flavor and hospitality at its finest!

It's my first time coming and the food is Absolutely delicious! 😋

As many times as I have drove down Beale St, I have never noticed this place. Walked in and it was a nice welcoming atmosphere. We were greeted immediately and seated. Server was nice and helpful. Ordered the chicken sandwich and was told they were out so I got the catfish instead. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted good. The chef even came out and made sure everything was cooked well. Really enjoyed my visit and will be back again.

Google
Shuga was recommended by a Memphis, resident, it did not disappoint. We came in Sunday afternoon. They were out of dressing. I ordered whole wings. They were huge, but we were tender and smoking hot. I eat slow, the last wing was still warm when I got to it. The cabbage was well seasoned. My hubby got turkey necks, but they were a bit tough. I liked the corn with onions and peppers. I wish they had red velvet or German chocolate cake. My mouth was ready for cake...oh well... :( I love lemonade, but their lemonade did not make the cut. There was not a live band on the day we arrived. Loved the photos of entertainers on the wall. We were seated within 5 minutes, our waitress was very attentive.

Yelp
This place gets it right every time. Attended here with my family reunion and my civic group. It was perfect atmosphere. The catfish is exceptional. The sides are homemade. And the service is perfect.

Yelp
Sugar Shack was a great way to close out our final day in Memphis. The chicken was seasoned so well I could've eaten the skin by itself. It was fried perfectly. The greens and mac and cheese is always a good duo! I could've skipped the Sugar Daddy drink since it was more sweet than strong, but everything else made up for it. The vibe definitely caters to that post-Sunday service crowd with live music and plenty of seating. Prices were super reasonable for the amount of food we got, and everyone at the table left full and happy. Between the location, the service, and the home-cooked menu, Sugar Shack really is a soul food trifecta on Beale Street.

Yelp
Suga Shack was the upmost small but entertaining and professional spot I've been to in a long time in Memphis. The staff is great and has a great attitude towards everything, especially if you're celebrating a birthday The space is small to fit about 100 or so people and the entertainment is always on point and on time (Friday & Saturday only). Food is phenomenal if you're looking for a dish that's freshly fried and hot. The parking lot is also small, but there is additional parking along the main street strip of Beale Street. There is an entry fee of $12 that is not taken up at the door but will be on your closing out ticket. Enjoy!

Katy J.

Yelp
Walk past the tourist traps on Beale Street and carry on to SugaShack. You won't be sorry. It is home cooking like Mom used to do (well, not my Mom but I'm sure someone's!) Crispy, breaded catfish with home made tartar sauce. Creamy potato salad. Perfectly cooked cabbage. Best meal we had in Memphis!

Ray E.

Yelp
The music is on point. Band showed up amd showed out. Atmosphere is on point. Sad to say the food was bland and the drinks taste link a bad batch of Kool Aid. Need a real bartender and put a lil seasoning in the food. Edit 1 star. These Mutha F'Ers have the audacity to charge a fu?$&g cover charge on my check. Dont waste your money or time in this place. Cover charge should have been communicated up front. Garbage A$$ Establishment. Let me pay this bill and bounce. 1 and done

Yelp
Oh my! I can't wait to come back to this place esp on the live music days. I came for lunch and the small space filled up quickly. I ordered the fried fish, mac, cabbage and yams. I'd recommend all of those items. Food came very hot (which I love) and almost perfectly seasoned. Only thing that didn't have season was the mac. Service was efficient being that it was one lady handling all the guests. The ambiance is great (space is small tho), it gives an underground vibe with the black color and pics on the wall. Great date spot ambiance, with food that's great for any occasion.

Yelp
My meal was heavenly! I was sitting in church praying to God for the most delicious and fulfilling comfort food I could get on New Year's Eve. The Lord told me to go to Suga Shack! My has never led me astray! We got the catfish and chicken wing plates with greens, yams, spaghetti and fried okra. We were promptly greeted and seated as soon as we walked in the door. Our waitress was very attentive and wasted no time taking our order and getting us everything we needed to enjoy our meals. It's a small but mighty place. I don't know how to explain this but it feels like "suga shack" is appropriate. Especially since it's sits right on Beale Street. Go! Just GO!

Yelp
I visited The Suga Shack with a large group and they accommodated us beautifully. The food was fresh and hot, the drinks were strong, and the live music was so entertaining. This is my 3rd time visiting, and it never misses. Check it out!

Yelp
Stopped into this place on my first visit to Memphis. The catfish was fried to perfection and the cabbage was good. Just beware, they close at 4 pm which I thought was a very unusual time.

Yelp
This place came recommended by friends and I must say it didn't disappoint! We have been traveling and looking for good southern style food and sadly we hadn't gotten it. When we walked in here, it was LOUD, think of being in a club, music blasting and folks feeling the groove and we were seated quickly. The waitress quickly let us know that they were out of numerous items (didn't know it was close to closing) so we decided to split a meal just to tide us over. We ordered the fried catfish plate with cabbage and yams and lemonade to drink (they have a full bar). The place was vibing and it wasn't long before the food arrived at our table. The waitress brought a second plate without us having to ask and there portion was large enough for us to share. So can I say the food was absolutely delicious! It's like this is what I have been looking for the last two weeks of my travels. The catfish was hit and crispy, the yams were tender and sweet and the cabbage was tender as well. The corn bread was dense and not my favorite but I didn't miss anything without it. If you are visiting it's definitely worth trying out and they also do live music so it's definitely worth dropping in for.

Yelp
I was in Memphis for work and having a soul food craving so I looked up a few places and settled on this one. We walked in and hardly nobody was there which made me skeptical. The hostess was extremely welcoming but then told us that half of the menu items were not available....including alcohol. Trying to support a black business, I overlooked the second red flag. We got the food quick. I got the chicken wings and my friend got the fish. I noticed the chicken still had feathers in it and was a little salty but overall everything else was ok, so I thought. . My friend and I split our meals to try both. The next day we were flying back to Chicago and both started to feel sick. Me more than him. I was sweating profusely on my flight, got the chills, a headache and couldn't stop going to the bathroom. It hit me...I think I have food poisoning. Its been 3 days and I'm still feeling the effects
google avatar

Yelp
Hubby and I made reservations for Valentine's Day because we wanted to support a black business + hear some live music. This place exceeded our expectations!!! Our server was so sweet and attentive. The wings, catfish bites, and fries were cooked and seasoned to perfection. The live music was so entertaining and sounded amazing. We are kicking ourselves for not visiting sooner! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Food 20/10 Service 15/10 Ambiance 20/10 When I say I have passed here soooo many years not knowing it was even there! Well I know now! I went on a Saturday and I had a blast! Definitely a "grown folks" spot. The live band (100/10) was playing , people were dancing, drinks were flowing I mean what else is there to want!

Yelp
I was this place on tiktok so many times, so i had to come try it while on vacay. It was in walking distance from our hotel, right past the end of Beale street. We went not long after they opened, so there was plenty of seating. We both ordered the catfish, and got the Mac and cheese, okra and yams as sides. That catfish was AMAZING!!! Crispy on the outside, super fresh and hot. No fishy taste at all. Great flavor. The yams were fantastic!! Not too sweet, just right. The okra was nice and crunchy. The Mac and cheese was kind of disappointing. It tasted like it was reheated from yesterdays batch (kind of dry). I definitely still ate it though. Not taking any points away from that. I highly recommend this place if you want a nice filling meal. Absolutely worth the money!

Yelp
Not gonna lie - I didn't understand the acclaim behind this local restaurant. First off, it's generally good, and the food came out fast but hot (good things). I really liked that my wings were lightly breaded, yet crispy and had seasoning. Unfortunately, it's seemingly the same seasoning used for the fries, so it's not unique to the dish. My sides of macaroni and green beans were also good, but did not add anything to the wings at all, and only vaguely complemented it. The spicy sauce on my fiancé's chicken sandwich was amazing, and everything else was just ok. For a place where they received high ratings everywhere we looked, our particular dishes were sadly underwhelming.

Yelp
My fav spot on Beale. Larry is an awesome singer here. Feels like a family affair everytime we come. Food is good, too. Great vibes.

Yelp
Love this little intimate spot. If you're looking for great life music, decently priced drinks, and food to match the drinks, look no further. My girls night party of three had a great time. We stayed the entire time. The music was absolutely amazing. Both performers were excellent and the band killed it! I didn't get a specially cocktail but my drinks were strong and on point just how I like it. My cousin prefers sweeter drinks and got a speciality cocktail that she loves. The catfish nuggets were really good as well. I got the wings with the sweet and spicy sauce. It was more sweet than spicy so I will do seasoned only next time. They only have ranch so if that's your thing great. As a blue cheese lover I was a little disappointed. There is a $12 cover per person but no need for cash because the cover is added to your ticket. Overall, it was an epic night.

Yelp
I Celebrated my Birthday @ the Suga Shack & it was amazing. The food was great, hot seasoned well. The service was awesome. From the door to the bartenders,Servers & the band was awesome. The Vocalist was the best. I really enjoyed the atmosphere . Really for the Grown folks I loved it & to make my experience complete Leon from the movie five Heartbeats dropped by & I had the opportunity to meet him & take a photo with him. My Birthday experience was the best ever at the Suga Shack on Beale St Memphis Tn. All of took place 8 July 2023.I will return there whenever I'm in Memphis or surrounding areas. Yelp
Kind & helpful staff. Went on a Sunday & they had gospel music playing. It was kind of hard to hear or I may be too old. Food was exactly what we wanted! We had the fried pork chops & a veggie plate with smothered potato's, dressing n gravy, fried okra & Mac n Cheese. The Mac n cheese!!! YALL!!! Sooo good!! The fried pork chop was so tender & juicy!! All the veggies tasted like they were straight out of my grandma's kitchen!! Will for sure go back!

Yelp
BLACK OWNED FRIDAY today I got the chance to eat at a new restaurant in Memphis called Suga Shack @sugashack_mem! I decided to get the MeatLoaf with sweet potatoes and cabbage & babyyyyyyyy that meat loaf was sooo FYE! I mean so full of flavor. It honestly made me forget about how the sides tasted. They were good too but that meat loaf hit different! This place is full of soul and is in the heart of downtown Memphis! It's a a cute little building on the other side of Beale street. & and it's black owned! Do yourself a favor make sure y'all check this place out. Yelp
So... food wise, I would give this place 5 stars. Overall service would be zero. I waited about 10 mins before I was acknowledged. Another 10 before I was seated (in a place with only 3 tables occupied). Another 10 before I could place my order. I endured this wait because I was anxious to try this food and I was really too tired to leave and find somewhere else (4 Way was already closed). Another short wait and my food was brought out. I ordered catfish which were huge along with yams and cabbage. And it was excellent. The server acknowledged the inconvenience of it all and offered a small price reduction so I was satisfied. I do plan to return and hopefully the service will improve enough to give it additional stars.

Yelp
Decided to visit during Memphis black restaurant week. Decided not to order from the limited restaurant week menu. Ordered the catfish, which was delicious. Great choice. The sides were VERY small. The yams were just okay, very syrupy to "stretch". Waited over 30 min for food to arrive. Server was EXTREMELY busy, but was attentive. Not sure if I would return.
google avatar

Brooke W.

Yelp
There is a $12 cover charge to sit and eat food. The doesn't include the food or drinks you purchase. You have to fight to slide in and out of the booths because the seats are not human friendly. I've been to fun jazz clubs where you pay a cover but this is a while in the wall restaurant. Not a club.
google avatar

Rebecca E.

Yelp
The vibe here is pretty nice! They have a stage for a band but no one was performing during my visit. I was pretty disappointed with my food. For one the portions are very small which I wasn't too thrilled to see. The fried catfish that I ordered had a pretty good taste, but my sides were not very good. The macaroni seemed to be box Mac and cheese, the cornbread didn't really have a taste at all, and my greens were part cold and Part warm. Overall, I was glad to experience a new spot, but I don't really see this as somewhere that I will try to return to anytime soon
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
The staf was excellent. The food was fresh and delicious. They have bands at night I wish I could come back tonight .

Yelp
We were visiting and discovered this hidden gem. Everything was AMAZING!! The food was so fresh, hot and delicious. Service was great and everyone made you feel so welcomed! We had a big group and the food still came really fast. About a block up from Beale street with live music, great food and amazing service, you can't go wrong! We will definitely return next time we're in town.

Yelp
I cannot properly review them based on the food. I tested positive for Covid and couldn't taste any of it. I do loveeeee their decor and how elegant it was. I didn't like the $22.00 ticket on a fish plate though. That's pretty steep. The customer service was okay. The waiter was standing at the rear of the restaurant while I was at the front. She literary was talking to me from the back of the restaurant instead of coming up front to take my order. I was put off by that. When I go back I will try another meat. I got greens, yams, and Mac n cheese. Those yams and greens were definitely made from scratch. Parking was very convenient too. Stay tuned for an updated review!

Yelp
DELICIOUS!!! The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. I regret waiting so long to visit this place but kept confusing it with a similar named business. Go support this small business with amazing southern cooking.
google avatar

Celeta S.

Yelp
This is the place to be for music. This was out first night in Memphis and if we could have circled back for more we would have. The music was great, friendly staff, great drinks and food. We enjoyed the late night menu and would love to go back and try different menu items. The catfish bites were seasoned and cooked to perfection. They came out quick and were nice and hot. They had us singing songs from every decade and we loved every minute of it. There's a parking lot nearby so parking was no issue. I can recommend them enough. We will always make a stop here and send anyone we know going to Memphis. The SugaShack is Black Owned and an absolute great time.
google avatar

Yelp
I just ordered catfish to go and ate it in 5 minutes. This place legitimately has the best catfish and fried green tomatoes I have ever eaten. Not only were both cooked perfectly, but the breading was absolutely perfect. I cook a fair amount in my free time and nailing a good breading on fish or chicken isn't easy. Legit perfect. The only critiques: the mac 'n cheese, though delicious, could use a bit more seasoning, and the cornbread could use a bit more spice, like jalapeño, but those are easy fixes. Also, Miss Ashley took my to-go order and was super kind. The music is obviously on hold because of covid, but the space is really well designed. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jae S.

Yelp
I ordered food Togo today and this is ridiculous. My chicken is raw. My food was not seasoned and for the price I expected more.
google avatar

Kyndra H.

Yelp
I stopped in driving back to Texas from Clarksville, TN and omg! I got the hot fried chicken with cabbage, corn and smothered potatoes. I NEVER finish my meals but this time I did and I was so proud of myself lol. The chicken was juicy and it stayed crispy after being covered in the sauce which was the perfect combination of sweet and spicy. I am already planning on making a special roadtrip just to go eat again!

Yelp
@eatinwiththejones on Facebook Our Ratings (on a scale of 1-5 's): Flavor Atmosphere Service At Suga Shack, musical roots are also emphasized in the restaurant's decor. There are portraits of some of the great entertainers such as Al Green, Isaac Hayes, and the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin. The atmosphere is very relaxing and intimate; the restaurant is well kept and clean. Suga Shack serves a selection of southern comfort food: fried chicken, pork chops, wings, catfish, greens, macaroni & cheese, cabbage, and yams. There's also an impressive array of house cocktails, wines, and beers. We had a delicious cocktail titled the "Suga Mama" which was a mix of Melon, Red Berry Ciroc, Pineapple Juice, & a splash of Sprite. The staff was friendly and courteous. On our most recent visit, we were actually served by the owner! We opted to get our entrees to go & enjoy each other's company over a refreshing beverage. Mr. Jones enjoyed the fried catfish (2 pcs) with cabbage and dressing; the fish was flaky and the breading was seasoned wel

Yelp
This "Hot Fried Chicken" is valid!! It's sweet heat and very similar to a Korean fried chicken -sticky BUT southern! I give high praises for juicy and well flavored fried chicken! The fried green tomatoes were also a hit! I didn't hit 5 stars b/c it was a take out order and the complimentary cornbread was pretty but bland! All in all, definitely worth a try and will have it again! #BlackBusinessToSupport

Yelp
Best Soul Food in town. Cooked with Love.. The catfish is a must have. Along with the cabbage!!! Lunch time/Dinner is doesn't matter!

Yelp
The owner is rude. I took my children downtown for the Christmas Tree Lighting. After the event we couldn't find a restaurant that allowed us to use the bathroom due to my children being underage or there not being public bathrooms. So we walked to the SugaShack which is right by where I parked. I'm visibly pregnant- 7 1/2 months pregnant to be exact. I have a baby pressing on my bladder. Fortunately a server there said it was okay that we use the restroom. My children and I walk towards the restroom in the back. I knock on the door to make sure no one was in there and I wait a couple minutes. Then I hear a man who apparently was the "boss" Carlos, cussing at her for allowing us to use the restroom. He tells her we passed 1000 other places and "not to be letting hoes in the restaurant." She defends her decision telling him I was pregnant. He says he doesn't care and "if we (my kids and I) mess up the restroom, she will have to clean the shit up." We literally just had to pee. I have never in my life received such piss poor customer service. This was absolutely uncalled for and very unprofessional. Not to mention, disrespectful for him to address me and my children in this manner. I will NEVER patronize this restaurant. If y'all have a corporate office, please know I'm writing a letter.

Yelp
Loved the hot chicken and fried catfish. We walked in 100+ degrees sun for 15min to get to this place. Totally worth it! Best of both we've ever had!
google avatar

Brea S.

Yelp
Suga Shack is a must visit. I got the catfish plate with Mac and yams. The catfish was fried to perfection and seasoned very well, add some hot sauce and it's a party. They also have a homemade tartar sauce that's pretty good so get both. The Mac and yams was a good choice for sides and truly brought the meal together. I would absolutely recommend suga shack to a friend and will definitely make it a stop if I'm back in town!
google avatar

Yelp
As snoop says, Fo Sho! Tried the crispy catfish and lots of veggies. Best fried okra ever. Catfish didn't need the delicious roumelaide, great taste on its own. Creamy spinach awesome. Green beans had some magic ingredient as well. Best find in Memphis!

Yelp
Left the civil rights museum and last minute got told about this place. I got the Suga Hot fried chicken. Sweet Jesus that chicken was amazing. For the sides I got the Mac and cheese and the cabbage. That Mac was very good when it came out hot. The cabbage flavor was great but probably a little soft for my liking. My boys got the wings and they said they were flavorful and crispy. They also said the yams were a 10 out of 10. Service was good, the lady checked on us numerous times and the cook/or owner also came to check with us to asking about the food. Great experience!!!
google avatar

Kimberly T.

Yelp
I went for turkey and dressing. As soon as I was given a menu, I was told that they were out of dressing. I went with the meatloaf and vegetables. I enjoyed the meal, the atmosphere and the staff was quick and courteous. I had a good experience and will go again.
google avatar

Oshun J.

Yelp
Solid Soul Food restaurant, nice intimate ambience, with very nice staff. The kitchen manager cares about his craft and I loved the fried chicken I had as a togo order. The most amazing part was the music after 7 on Saturday. I enjoyed the smooth R&B soul covers and the band. Felt like a joint that I'd hang out at for good food and timeless jams that'll get anyone to shake their hips & snap their fingers!!!! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Leanei B.

Yelp
The price tag did not match the meal. Me and my boyfriend where not impressed in the slightest. The Kraft velvetta Mac and cheese and canned corn was not worth $70. Also I've never gotten a cup that was not filled up.
google avatar

Shaquita E.

Yelp
I went on Saturday around 7 pm but they had a $12 cover so me and my niece went elsewhere. I came back on Sunday after calling ahead to make certain their wasn't a charge of entry. I enjoyed the music but not the food. I had greens, dressing, fried chicken wings which were extremely salty and I wasn't able to eat because I already have high blood pressure. The server was excellent though!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute place! They have nice deals after 6pm. There was a live band about to start when we were finishing up. Our server was super nice! The food was great. Catfish was yummy & their spinach side was good!

Yelp
5 stars across the board. traveling from KCMO, for our anniversary getaway. wanted some wholesome soul food and we got that. the chicken and fish was SO good. the mac, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, FIRE. we tried the half and half lemonade and the strawberry lemonade. PERFECT. our service/waiters were so polite. he made sure we was taken care of for sure. the other waiters checked in on us too. we got there right before the rush too. but the food still came out quickly and piping hot. nice set up and music. just all around good spot.

Yelp
My fiancé and I went to the Suga Shack because we heard about it from a relative who mentioned a specific radio personality had advocated for the eatery. Little did we know upon visiting the so-called establishment this Sunday afternoon that the service would be exceptionally poor. First, it took several minutes for the hostess to seat us (a party of two) when there were empty tables. Then once we were sitting, no one ever came to bring us a menu, offer to get us a beverage, etc. After almost fifteen minutes, I looked at my fiancé and said this is ridiculous, so let's leave. We walked out of the restaurant and the hostess who seated us looked up at me and said, "Have a nice day!" Wow! Nevertheless, I will tell everyone I know to never eat at this place again. On top of that, I noticed how unclean it looked. We went to another restaurant and were welcomed with open arms and with exceptional service. It just goes to show why you can't support your kind.

Dena M.

Yelp
Food was amazing! I had no idea what fried corn was but decided to give it a shot. De- licious!! Nothing fried about it but was so so good. We got the fried catfish and the 2 pieces were huge-- couldn't eat both of them cause I ate the corn bread and green beans too. Service was excellent! Not only did the waitress check on us but so did other staff. May not look like much from the outside but definitely worth stopping for.
