The Best Butcher Shops In Boston

"Compared to some of the other butcher shops on this list, Sulmona in the North End is a pretty small place - a quail in a flock of turkeys, if you will. Yet there’s something decidedly old school and charming about it. You walk up to the butcher block, ask for your preferred cut of meat, and it’s prepared for you right on the spot. It may be the most anti-tourist thing in the North End, which is why we love it so much." - joel ang

Google
The best chicken cutlets - perfectly sliced and trimmed - I only want cutlets from Sulmona! And the Roastacciini - lamb skewers are the best - must have for any bbq or pizza party. WE LOVE THEM, cant get enough, highly recommend and purchase from here beginning of every summer. Now that I know about the cutlets may have to go back more often!! YUM!!

Wow! I feel like I’ve discovered a hidden gem. This is an excellent spot for top-quality sausages and steak. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, which makes the experience even better. They also offer custom sausages, a fantastic bonus! Will surely visit again

Google
A friend suggested that I try this place. My son and I went in and ordered a thick cut Delmonico steak. They custom cut the size for us right in front of us and did all the trimming. The steak was great!

Google
The best butcher in town. I travel from Portland Maine to buy the sausages and veal. Porchetta is amazing as well. Old school butcher who actually tenderizes the meat for you. I Love it here.

Google
A Great place to make money (or the opposite), my partner said. Customers are standing in the store - appeared to wait in line, but, the 2 employees did not have any meat to work with. just standing around, too. How so? 😁 No MEAT or any refrigerators, It appeared they were waiting for the white door to open to enter.

No city, town or hamlet is worth visiting without a premier butcher and baker. Frank Susi provides Prime meats and poultry to many of our city's top restaurants. The professional and gracious service is an added bonus to a crown roast, steak or fresh cut braciole that ensures a memorable meal for your family and guests!

Google
Very thankful that Sulmona is in my neighborhood. Anything you want they can get it, and they are a full service shop. One of my favorites is the thin sliced chicken cutlets, sliced, flattened and wrapped right in front of you. I highly recommend these folks.

Andrew Lelling

Google
Love this place. Old school butcher, exceptional meat quality. Great antidote to Whole Foods. Not inexpensive, but well worth it.

Daniel D.

Yelp
Long time fan and customer. You will not go wrong by using this butcher which is several generations deep.

Yelp
Sulmona Meat Market is in business and going strong. Myself and Bobby Pugliese would drive from Vermont to purchase whole hind quarters for our veal dishes at the Jamiaca ouse back in the mid 1970's and of course Dominic's famous homemade sausage. This is a testiment of how a quality meat shop stays open for decades after decades. Businesses come and go, but true quality of meats and service continues to this day. Congratulations on such an achievement!!!! Oakie

Yelp
This is a great little Italian butcher shop in the North End. I stopped and watched through the window as we were waiting to begin our Food Tour.

Freddie S.

Yelp
Bought 1 tenderloin center cut to make one of these delicious Wellington's. Didn't get a chance to take a cut shot before it was gobbled up. Out of the two made the family liked the cut from this north end butcher. The handling of the meat during the cooking process was easy as well. Truly a great product from them.

Kathleen A.

Yelp
Bought 6 steaks for my son's birthday. They were delicious and well priced. The chef really appreciated that they were each perfectly cut to order to the exact same thickness so he could easily adjust cook times for each person's preferred temperature. Two nice guys in the shop. Since I no longer have a butcher in my own neighborhood, this will be a regular occurrence for me. Very happy with the product and service here! Thank you for making me look like a rockstar!

Lisa A.

Yelp
We stopped in to check out the place and spent awhile talking to the very nice butcher and purchased Italian Sausage both Spicy and Mild. We also picked up some sausage casings for later use. I brought it home and cooked it in a homemade marinara but separated out the hot from the gravy. The family loved it especially my son. Great quality and flavor! We will be back for more.

Yelp
Best in town. Cannot beat their cut-to-order meats, burger, sausages. Tell them what you want and they'll make it up right then and there. These guys are real pros. Great quality and fair prices.
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
Excellent quality. A real butcher. Love this place. Their sausages are amazing and their cuts are always fresh. If you want a special cut just ring them a few days before.

Yelp
I came here on a weekday morning and there was a short line. They do not display the meat but there is a sign on the wall that tells you what they have. The meat is stored in a room at the back. I came here to get ribeye steak. I love the way the guy got the entire huge piece of meat and sliced it in front of me. That way, you can see how thick the meat is. The quality of the meat was excellent. I saw another person getting ground meat- they will grind it right there in front of you. Another person wanted his meat sliced really thin, a guy was skillfully slicing the meat for him. Overall, a great place for meat, steak, lamb, sausage etc! Definitely will be back.

Yelp
I admit I know very little about Charcuterie. But I do know a great experience when I'm in it and baby, Sulmona was exactly that - it was like being back in Italy. I needed to buy some veal shank for a special birthday dinner I'm cooking and really wanted good veal - I just didn't trust Shop & Stop or CostCo to have quality veal. And if you're going to spend 'veal money' you want to get the good stuff. After going to Sulmona I have no doubt in my mind this stuff is fresh and tasty - even a moderately talented home cook like myself can probably make magic with this veal. And that's exactly what I intend to do. Be SURE to bring cash - cash only! (All the best places are.)

India W.

Yelp
Sulmona is a hidden gem in the North End. We have tried most of the meats and have been impressed with the quality and service every time. It's cash only - there is a Bank of America ATM a few blocks away.

Yelp
Poor service. I walked in and was the only customer. One of the two gentlemen saw me and went in the back. The other looked up at me and then back down at the counter. I asked for a few things, and they didn't have them. Including bones! What respectable butcher doesn't sell bones?! And to make it worse, they were not helpful in the slightest, literally all he said to me was "no." "Do you guys sell this?" "no." "Do you have have that?" "no." "Do you know where I can go for any of it?" "no." "Okay, well thanks anyway..." *silence* What am I, chopped liver? I normally love going to the butcher shop, but this sucked.

Marie S.

Yelp
I was there last month and walked in and I said hello, no response, asked for liver sausage and they said no! I was disappointed at the unfriendliness of the worker. My Dad was from Sulmona and took me in that shop as a kid and gave them a lot of business. I little kindness goes along way. Been to Italy and the Italians there are so awesome and friendly.

Yelp
Run, don't walk to Sulmona's if you want a great cut of meat! I picked up a pre-ordered standing rib roast on Christmas Eve morning at about 930a. I waited about 20 minutes as the line for pickup was almost out out the door when I arrived, but I passed the time happily listening as customers conversed in Italian and folks stopped in to say "Buon Natale" to 3 fellows who carried on conversations while whittling away on pieces of meat both large and small. I later gathered from outside sources that I was watching a father/son team with an incredibly dexterous third employee in his later 70's who wielded large saws and cleavers with great aplomb. I watched meat go from a large mass to an almost transparently thin slice. I was awestruck to see the quality of meat that was being put into the grinder and being turned ground beef. If it hadn't been for an order for someone ahead of me who took it all, I was ready to buy at least a pound of it.... Each customer was treated with equal care and attention whether the order was for 2 lamb chops or my 6 rib roast. When it was my turn, the son put up with my very ignorant questions (I'm not much of a meat cooker) and was patient enough to trim the whole roast and weigh it for me so that I could decide that I only need 6 of the 7 ribs. I have regretted that mightily as I day-dream about leftovers, but my wallet is glad I was abstemious. The roast was expensive (remember that they don't take credit!), and I had to bum cash from my BF who kindly coughed up and then carried the 14 pound roast all the way home. That noted, the per-pound price was not out of line and I would pay it again in a heartbeat as the roast was perfectly trimmed, tender, and richly flavored... SO much better than the roasts I've made from grocery store butchers and local purveyors of grass-fed beef. Don't think twice about this-- get your next important cut of meat at Sulmona's. And then you'll never want to buy meat anywhere else.

Yelp
Lately my fiancee and I have been trying out cooking steaks at home. So we've been trying different meat markets to see which one we like best. Comparing this to the other place around the corner, DiPaolo and Rossi, they're both good but this place definitely has the edge. Their ribeye has better marbling than D&R for the same price. I would definitely recommend going to Sulmona if you are looking for a great steak at a good price!
google avatar

Jack L.

Yelp
I've been going here for several years. The place, the ambience, and the butchers never disappoint. I get a standing rib roasts a few times a year, pounded-out veal, sausages, and bone-in ribeyes. When you take into consideration the quality/grade of the product, the trimming before weighing, and the care they take in making sure your order is what you want, the prices are very reasonable. Cash is king so bring it. This place is fabulous!

James K.

Yelp
Yay Meat! The first time I walked in to the Sulmona I was very skeptical. Here was this butcher shop, renowned for their meat, without any to be seen in the display case. (Wow, it must be really good its all gone.) Turns out, there's this whole respect thing between them and one of the other butchers in the neighborhood where they don't display their meats - I don't really get it - but I do get the sausages, usually 4 or 5 pounds at a time. They're basically excellent cuts of meat ground up with salt and pepper and turned into tubes of sheer deliciousness.

Yelp
We had an impromptu 'feast' as the butcher put it, where my comrade and I stopped in and bought food for five people here. Of course, we bought enough to feed seven or ten people... and all for 55 dollars. For that, we got three THICK t-bones, three 'normal' strips and two sweet sausages. All the cuts were made right there in front of us, and he trimmed them to perfection before our eyes. They wrapped it all up and we were gone in no time. I cannot recommend this place too much... it's my new go-to meat store... anyone know if they do chicken/pork too? We didn't ask, as we were in a meat trance. NOTE: I'm not sure they take credit! We paid with cash, and I don't think they take cards... so be prepared!

Paul D.

Yelp
This is by Far the Best Meat Market Butcher shop in the Northeast. Quality meat cut and prepared right on the spot. My Family has been going to Sulmona Meat Market for years, Glad to see nothings really change with Costumer service.
google avatar

Micah S.

Yelp
As old school as you can get. They cut and prepare your meat for you on the spot. Limited menu. This place is awesome.

Xavior m.

Yelp
Until yesterday, this was my butcher. There is something about having your meat prepared just for you that I like. What changed my mind? Cleanliness. Yesterday, I went in to get my meat and here is what I observed. The butcher cut another persons meat, took his money, reached into a change pot and placed change into the register, gave the person their meat and change, then he placed the meat back on the hook and in the fridge. He took my order, grabbed the meat, prepared it, took my money. Never once did he wash his hands. In addition, the older Butcher was using his cell, touching what appeared to be a ledger, when a worker from a restaurant to order a whole pancetta, the butcher went and grabbed the pancetta, he gave the pancetta to the man and continued his paper work and using his phone, all without washing his hands. We all know that money and cell phones are very filthy and that you should always wash your hands before and after touching meat. That rule is not observed here.

Yelp
Greatest butcher shop around . Old school Quality , My go to place when i want fresh meat . Just had a Bone in rib eye steak that was the best piece of meat I ever ate
google avatar

Vince P.

Yelp
The meat is the best in the North End. The cutlets are perfection I wouldn't go anywhere else for my meat and I have been going there for 30years.

Tiglath Z.

Yelp
Absolutely love coming to Sulmona! This family owned business has been around for several decades, and the customers keep coming back for two reasons: incredible meat and poultry, and wonderful service! I have made some of the best rib eye steaks because of how good the quality of the meat is. I love watching them chop up and trim the fat right in front of me. The chicken and ground beef are amazing, too.
google avatar

Yelp
Update 0406/2014: Talk about fresh...everything you buy here, except whole pork tenderloin and hot dogs, is prepared to order. Ask for a pound of hamburger, and they go to the fridge, cut off a pound of whole beef, and run it through the grinder 3 times, and you get it FRESH. Same goes for veal scallops, pork roast, lamb chops, steaks, etc. -- you ask for it, and they cut it then and there to your order. FRESH, PLUMP, JUICY, FLAVORFUL!

Jospehine S.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST meat market in Boston. Everything is cut to order. I have lived all over the country and have never found a butcher that comes close to the quality at Sulmona. This place is the real deal.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Yes they are the best. I'll never forget several years ago going there the Saturday before Easter for some fresh ground hamburg (I know, but I was on a budget and they grind the best.) There was a line out the door waiting to buy spring lamb. Then a van pulls up and here come a line of skinned lambs right thru the front door past the customers. And me without my camera. Luckily no vegetarians were around!

Stephanie F.

Yelp
Love this place....one of the rare, quality places in Boston where you have old world style service with a great variety of cuts. They even prep large orders for your summer BBQ needs. It's a real treat to have butchers prep the meat for you according to your liking. It saves a lot of time and hassle.

A. G.

Yelp
If you want best quality meat, you ought to go to Domenico. I never, ever been disappointed. I m from the old country meaning I'm the pickiest customer you could have. Pls do not complain about the prices, if you want cheap just go to market basket. Must try the homemade pacentta, veal and lamb. Ciao

Yelp
Wow - am i really the first to review this secret gem? so be it - the secret is out...this is an old fashioned real butcher shop - big wood block for chopping, grinders in the back, big freezer and absolutely no meat around anywhere. Why you may ask? because this is like in the good old days where you tell the butcher what you want or ask his recommendations and he goes into the massive freezer and brings out his best cuts. Fresh deliveries arrive all the time (yes, sorry vegan friends, they unload whole skinned lambs in piles and pack the freezer) For meat lovers and cooks, this place is a gem. It reminds me of places my grandma used to shop and her hand me down recipes are filled with helpful things like "ask the butcher to give you..." i am happy places like this exist! cash only...(i think)

Yelp
I went here on the same day I went to DiPaolo & Rossi's because I was writing the "Battle of the Butchers" post on my blog, and in the end I decided that a dance-off would be the only way to decide a clear winner. Like D&R, I've only been there once, but once is enough to make a great impression! The sirloin they gave me was incredibly flavorful, and I can't wait to stop back and try some of their other choices! As I said in my D&R review, I prefer buying meat from a real butcher rather than from a case packed with styrofoam and plastic wrap. Let Sulmona's tackle your steak cravings!

Jones N.

Yelp
This is the butcher shop that dreams are made of. True quality and craftsmanship. The wait was long but entirely worth the experience. If you enjoy a true old school italian butcher shop this is the place to go. If I'm making ragu I won't go anywhere else to buy my veal and pork, along with every italian grandmother in line with you.

Diane J.

Yelp
Sulmona is the best. Try their Medallion Veal Cutlets. Out of this world. Hamburger is so fresh, ground to order. When I could I use to go every week, my mother use to go before that. It has been about 50 years. Prices aren't bad. But you get what you pay for.

Helen J.

Yelp
I was searching for veal for Vitello Tonnato last week, and was delighted to find out that not only did they have the top round roast I was looking for, but it was fabulous!. This great little no-nonsense butcher shop is now my "go to" place for lots of specialty cuts. Prices are competitive if you understand that you get what you pay for. Fast, friendly service and great meat! Recommending it to all my cooking colleagues. Helen J

Linda M.

Yelp
Throw back '60s....the good, friendly, consistently fresh neighborhood butcher is rare these days...with box-sized grocery stores, chain markets, etc. many of the good ones have been pushed out! Sulmona is great - you won't find refrigerated meat cases here because EVERYTHING is cut to order. I moved here to the North End a year ago and this is my go-to place for all meats. FRESH FRESH FRESH....haven't had any issues with quality - only the best. Cut to order meats including grinding the beef to order, cutting chops to order - EVERYTHING. They cut away the fat on roasts, steaks, etc. BEFORE they weigh it! Who does that? This is a no frills operation but then again, who needs Muzak and fancy parsley bordering day old meat in semi-cold cases? Do bring cash or check only...don't hesitate - worth a trip to the North End.

Yelp
My girlfriend wants to get a stuffed pork tenderloin to cook for dinner, I tell her you have to call ahead for something like that, where are you going to find it you think? She searched online and couldn't find the market she was looking for ( they closed like 20 years ago) in the North End but since we were going down there anyway she made a couple of random calls, She tried Pace and spoke with a guy named Mike who explained he didn't have what she wanted but if she was going to be in the area to stop in and he'd check around for us in the meantime. When we got there Mike told us Sulmona was the place and it was just a block up the street. So we walked up the street which I still thought was a waste of time but when Mary asked if they would stuff a tenderloin she didn't get the "whaddareyanuts?" look she was told sure and if they didn't have the ingredients she could go buy them and bring them back and they'd prep it. We had it stuffed with garlic, prosciutto, roasted red peppers, four cheeses and spinach, the result? one of the best meals I ever had in my life I HIGHLY recommend Sulmona for the tastiest meat you'll find and great, friendly service. You won't be disappointed and don't forget the helpful folks at Pace for cold cuts and cheeses. Theses places made our day today.

john l.

Yelp
Top shelf meats and friendly service. The lamb sausage is off the scale! One word of caution: Expect long wait times around any holiday particularly Christmas and Easter. That said, it's worth the wait to stand for an hour and watch master butchers at work!

Yelp
Being a poor college student, I find it very difficult to keep to a simple budget when visiting the North End of Boston. I tend to spend my weekly pay-check on delicious meats and cheese, but Sulmona definitely doesn't break the bank. My friend and I were looking for a butcher when we saw this simple store with nothing more than a small sign out front and nothing showing in the cases. Needless to say, my friend and I were very skeptical about a butcher that doesn't seem to display any meat, but we certainly were not disappointed. When we entered this small shop there was an old Italian woman talking with one of the butchers in Italian and buying all sorts of delectable meats. Another old gentleman was there purchasing fresh sausages and some sort of pork I would guess. They have a small window into their meat locker where they display their Italian sausages, which were divine. We purchased four links (about 1 lb) for only $4, which was shocking at how cheap they were. After trying them I instantly regretted not getting another 12. I would highly recommend this butcher shop and plan on returning every week. Next time we are getting thick cut t-bone steaks.

Yelp
best meat market ever, getting the thanksgiving turkey from there this year, as well as other goodies!!

Bob K.

Yelp
The supermarket Italian sausages are terrible with all the bits and pieces of bone and gristle in them and all the fat left in the frying pan. So finally I took the trip into the North End and tried these "home made" Italian sausages. They were Excellent! I could see they're mostly meat and have very little fat. I bought 4 lbs this last time and 2lbs of lean ground beef. The beef is like the best ground sirloin I ever had. Since the sausages are made on-site you can pre-order your own "custom" sausages with ingredients like provolone, mozzarella, spices etc. I'll NEVER eat those supermarket imitations again. (Downside - parking in the North End can be tough - the earlier the better.)

Katherine B.

Yelp
I've been to this store only once when i desperately was looking for meat in north end but i haven't decided yet if I'm gonna come back to this store. Probably when i have an emergency only. The only thing i didn't like that none of the employees used gloves touching meat. And for me as a food manager it's unacceptable for place like that. Touching meat and money at the same time is a violation. Other than that i have no complaints.

Mark R.

Yelp
You know a place is good if there's a line of Italian grandmas in front of you. I used to go to another butcher who was always out of something, be it sirloin or pork chops. The veggie guy on Parmenter suggested Sulmona. I am glad he did. My meat purchases are boring and repetitive - i always get sirloin, chicken breast, pork chops and sausage. I could theoretically get these anywhere. But the quality is so much better. None of the meat has ever failed me. I recommend making this part of any north enders circuit. Possible downsides are cash only and old school hours of operation (no sunday or weekday evenings). However I am always willing to exchange convenience for quality. Special events, make a stop by couple of days before any religious holiday (easter or christmas) and see the funky stuff people buy - you haven't lived til you've seen an entire lamb get broken down before your very eyes.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Best Pancetta in the world. I drive from Western Massachusetts just to buy my pancetta at Sulmona's. I stumbled onto this place years ago, completely by accident. I had not been able to find high quality fresh pancetta anywhere in Western Mass. They happened to be open on a Saturday night while we were eating in the North End. I stopped by to see what they had. I saw their pancetta hanging on the walls like I used to see when in Italy. Just like the local markets we shopped in there. I was so happy I bought half a side and carried it with me to dinner and then home. I made Amatriciana the next day. It was just like I was back in Italy eating it again. It was definitely the pancetta. I also use it in my Bolognese sauce, and everybody loves it. This family knows how to make the best pancetta. Their sausages are authentic as well. I have always been pleased with every product I have purchased there. Great job Sulmona!
