Texas Restaurants Can Reopen This Week, But Restaurateurs Still Have Major Concerns - Eater Dallas

A 18-Stall Food Hall Will Open at Downtown Dallas’s AT&T Discovery District - Eater Dallas

"The Trinity Groves space that served as home base for Chino Chinatown for six years will soon see a new restaurant serving handmade dumplings and hand-pulled noodles. The newcomer has a name that is arguably offensive: Sum Dang Good Chinese. It will be led by Chef Weigou Cai, formerly of Wu Wei Din and Royal China. Dishes will include sweet and sour baby back ribs, beer can chinese chicken and a gigantic crab soup dumpling called a “Humpty Dumpling.” A renovation is in the works to change up the space’s color scheme and open the dining room to the kitchen so diners can watch chefs at work at noodle and dumpling stations." - Adele Chapin

Customer service is top tier. Both the hostess and manager are extremely nice; however, I wish I could say the same for the food. I love Chinese cuisine so I was super excited to try this place; however after paying around $15-$16, I was left with hardly any protein (the amount was less than half the Togo box) to which tasted very poor. And a full cup of rice which I suppose is nice if that is what you enjoy. They even only gave me one broccoli piece! I ended up returning the food however, for the amount of cost, I was hoping for bigger portions and greater quality in food

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sum Dang Good Chinese, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family. But the real star of the show was the food—absolutely delicious! From the flavorful dishes to the impeccable presentation, every bite was a delight. If you're craving some top-notch Chinese cuisine, I highly recommend giving Sum Dang Good Chinese a try. You won't be disappointed!

Google
The only reason this is getting three stars is because of how professional the management was handling the situation of most of the food we ordered being horrible. The best and in my opinion only edible thing on the menu are the hand pulled noodles. The crab ragoons came out cold in the middle, the ramen was bland, the pork dumplings were bland, the soup dumplings had almost no soup. Our server was clearly very inexperienced with customer service and attempted to make excuses for the food being bad- didn’t get good service. The manager was very professional and she took off the bad food we didn’t eat- which is why we are rating 3 stars but the food (with the exception of hand pulled noodles) is a 1 star..

Ordered on uber eats for the first time today 03/13/2025. The crispy spicy beef - says it’s pan fried, not breaded! It also barely looks/taste like beef. barely “crispy” for something breaded. Photos for expectations added. General Tso’s Chicken - also breaded without a description. The box was half full. There was no spice in the cooking, they just threw peppers at the bottom of the to go box, added the soft chicken, and topped it with 2 pieces of broccoli. Everything was cold. It taste like frozen food that you throw on a pan.

Headed over to Trinity Groves and realized most of the restaurants are not opened so we were limited to Beto and Son and Sum Dang Good Chinese. Chose to try this. The reviews were on point about a 3 star review type and the type of service given to customers. Got there and it took a long time for us to get some water. Ordered the combination dumpling and lo mein. There was only one dumpling that I liked and unfortunately I didn’t know what type it was. The dumplings were wrapped in different colors. The best was the lo mein but it was average for a Chinese place. Also there was automatically a 20% gratuity included which the server quickly brushed over. We addressed it with the server who didn’t inform other members of our party.

Google
I really liked this place. The orange chicken is lightly fried and the sauce is GREAT. BIG PORTIONS AND FRIENDLY and also affordable

First time trying this spot out was yesterday night 2/3/25, & I ordered takeout. I ordered a typical general tso chicken w. brown rice & one veggie egg roll. When I got home and opened my order, I felt completely bamboozled & highly underwhelmed by what I saw! First the food was not even hot & looked like they gave me someone else’s leftovers. The small amount of general tso chicken they gave me in a big ass container was like it was meant for child or dog. Then the rice it self was not hot & neither was it cooked long enough ( it was hard & sticky). The only thing that was well prepared was the veggie egg roll, everything was straight GARBAGE! If I could give place ZERO stars I would & recommend everyone to do the same! DO NOT WASTE TIME & MONEY COMING TO EAT HERE.

Google
Fisrt time here, and unfortunately, it was a horrible experience. The waiter was rude from the moment we walked in. When she brought one of our orders, it was the wrong item. When we corrected her, she said no, you ordered this, pulled out her little computer, and tried to correct us. But there were 4 adults who heard chicken dumplings, not pork buns. Anyways, this was a bad experience, and we just decided to leave because our waiter did not treat us with kindness and respect.

Yelp
Really loved almost everything we ordered. The salt and pepper shrimp was perfectly seasoned, the Mongolian Beef was made with jalapeños so it had a little bit of a kick to it and the beef was so tender, the chicken lo mein had great flavor and the fried rice is a must. The only thing I wasn't a fan of were the egg rolls.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from here tonight, the portion sizes were laughable. I understand there's inflation but this was just wrong to charge customers for more than double the price of a mere lunch portion. I've never ordered from a Chinese restaurant that skimped on portions. This business should be ashamed of themselves! Just read on Dallas Eater that this restaurant is owned by two "white restauranteurs", so know that it's also not authentic.

Yelp
My friend and I came by to get dinner and for some reason couldn't dine in until 7pm so we sat outside until it was time. It was a little crowded and service was a little slow but our server was really nice. We started off with some soup and I got the egg drop soup. It took about 10min to get out, but overall was okay. I did like the wonton strips on the side, and they had quite a lot! The soup was filling and a good quantity but was a little too salty for me. For my main I went with the house fried rice and after asking for some chili sauce, it wasted pretty good! There was a good amount of shrimp and chicken in it and honestly was enough for two meals. Overall, it was an okay experience and probably wouldn't come back and instead try another place.

Yelp
not sure when the theme or the company changed. It used to be a Mexican Chinese fusion that had an amazing lunch. Nonetheless I gave it a try got a few egg rolls and then got the dumpling boat we requested edamame but were told that they were out of it yet it came on the boat little confusing Service was pleasant but not as smooth as it could be already had all the food after a little bit of a weight when it wasn't too busy but started to wait longer for plates and cutlery even though the food had been ordered 15 or 20 minutes enjoyed most of the dumplings one didn't hit me the right way wish it was labeled or some sort of understanding so I can order the ones that I liked Won't be my first choice in the future not a bad experience but there's a lot of room for improvement. it's a shame because it's a great area

Yelp
The worst Chinese food ever. Orange chicken had a weird old flavor and the sauce was soggy, almost soup like for $16? Never again. Service was also so bad. Mediocre taste buds giving this place a five star is hilarious
google avatar

Sunny K.

Yelp
The food is good but not worth the price. That's the problem with Trinity Groves in general...a lot of overpriced food that is not always that great. I can objectively say that I've never eaten anything that I don't like, but with the type of ambiance and pricing that they have, you'd expect more. It just tastes like some good ole Chinese take out.

Mayra R.

Yelp
First of all I hope all servers are like Natalie, she took care of us like family from beginning to end. She did such a great job that we ordered food to-go just to make her tip bigger!! We will be back and we hope everyone has the best experience like we did with Natalie!!! You rock Natalie, if I had a restaurant I'd hire you forever!!! Food and drinks always taste better with excellent service!! Thank you for providing that.

Yelp
We drove around and around and around. Called twice to get directions and still couldn't find it. Better signage and indication of where this is located is needed.

Yelp
We ordered delivery via Grub Hub. The Dan Dan noodles weren't terrible, but we forgot to order the pork with it. Even then, while it was a good flavor, it left much to be desired. The house fried rice was filled with a good portion of proteins, but overall, it was also lacking in flavor. The soup dumplings were the best thing we got. Very flavorful dumplings and great portion. The sweet and sour chicken had flavor, but the skin could have been crispier, but again, it at least had flavor. I'm not sure if we will be back. Just was not for us. Needs more flavor

Katie B.

Yelp
it's so good and it's really not that hard to find at all just walk for like one second and you'll see the little sign it's totally worth it

Yelp
HORRIBLE! This place has gone soooo downhill. I was excited to come back here and was extremely disappointed. I would give 0 stars if I could. The food was so overpriced and quality was very mid. The soup dumplings were tiny and dry... worst I've ever had. Even the table next to us was sending food back. Service was not great. It was so dirty and gross inside. Flies were constantly flying in our faces and food it was disgusting.

Yelp
Food was amazing, drinks very tasty. Great service. Iri was sweet and a great server. Highly recommend

Yelp
Probably the driest Chinese food I've ever eaten. Sauceless food and slightly undercooked rice is not a good combination. Sum Dang, where's the sauce? Is it just me, or isn't one of the best things about eating Chinese food, when the sauce kisses the rice and you get the contrast of the bland rice and the bright flavor of the entree? I probably won't be recommending this place anytime soon.

Amanda B.

Yelp
Cream cheese and crab Rangoon were the best thing i ordered. The veggie egg roll had no flavor and was watery. I ordered the general Tso's with fried rice, the chicken was cooked good but the flavor just was not there AT ALL, all you tasted was the peppers, but the fried rice was mushy and no flavor. I had to send it back and ordered the orange chicken and it was decent but not great. I unfortunately will not be coming back to this establishment. The waitress was nice and accommodating.
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
I door dashed the duck and the soup dumplings. The food was less than desirable and I was not a fan. Food was cold and dough was chewier than I normally like.
google avatar

Angelica B.

Yelp
Do not come here. Friends and I came to Dallas in March and had this place for the first time - it was great! So when we had another trip to Dallas we had to come back. Yeah, huge mistake. Not the same management. The menu is different. The food quality is HORRIBLE. The food had zero flavor, the beef was so tough, and the rice wasn't fully cooked. It was also very expensive for small portions. ICK.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
This is not the same place as it was a year ago. Menu is fully changed, quality way down, portions way down. I gave it a 2 because the owners are amazing. Otherwise it gets a 1. Got fried rice now $5 vs $16. It was white rice with 2 pieces of egg and soy sauce. Very bland. Orange chicken is very much like a frozen meal from the grocery store. Very different than it used to be. Beef was tough and the noodles were bland and rubbery. We tossed 3/4 of our food. We will not be returning or recommending this place. For those of you who never got to experience how amazing this place was a year ago I'm sorry. For those of you who did be warned it is not the same.

Yelp
Service was great. Food was okay. I have gone to many other Asian spots but this is us just not it for me.

Yelp
Ate here recently. The food was good and was just what I wanted. The location was really nice too. The waitress karina was great and got our food and drinks quickly

Yelp
Jesse was a fantastic server! Very attentive! And great soft skills. The food was great too! Char Sui Rice was 10/10.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit three weeks ago. I had a random day off and was looking for somewhere to kills some time. The food was really good and big proportions for the size. The drinks were amazing and the service was even better. Would definitely go again.

Yelp
I found this place via Yelp after checking into my hotel while on business travel. They met my basic criteria of offering delivery to my hotel, and so I decided to try their offering of hand-pulled noodles in bean sauce, and some steamed pork dumplings. A quick Grubhub order, and everything was on the way. Twenty minutes later, a door knock, and waiting outside was a nice bag full of delis. The dumplings were steamed nice and supple, pork-filled with a nice garlic flavor, bits of wood ear providing a little crunch. But the noodles. The noodles were lovely ribbons, but cut short (I like to cut my own, thanks) to fit in the deli. The dish itself was overwhelmingly chock full protein (in my case, chicken) and broccoli. There wasn't a lot of flavor to be had from onions or garlic, or ginger, or anything else besides the sort of steamy flavor of the chicken and broccoli. And I was really disappointed with the lack of any sort of black bean sauce. In fact, there wasn't any sense of a sauce, at all- just sort of a steamy bland nada. Three stars here for the quick delivery, the dumplings, and the sheer volume of food. Also, three stars because of the bland house specialty. If you're into a more flavorful experience, maybe you want to go with a more basic American Chinese fare.

Yelp
Great food, Great Service! Ms. Anahi was amazing and made sure we were and always went the extra mile:)

Yelp
Out for lunch with co-workers and decided to come eat some Chinese Food. Please disregard the red color, it was the tent outside in the patio on a sunny day. The service and food were great definitely enjoy our time here and will definitely be back. Our server was very knowledgeable and very polite. Next time we make our appearance I will definitely order some alcohol beverages, as the menu has a great selection of cocktails. I can see this place busy on the weekends. But I'll def come back on a weekday to enjoy it.
google avatar

Yelp
So I really had high hopes for this place. First our server, I can't remember her name but she was short Latina girl with round glasses. I actually had a great time conversing in Spanish with her but she rushed us through our whole order. Forgot a drink I ordered but she removed it from the ticket at the end. I think she just had a really long day. But next I want to discuss the food quality. I order the hot and sour soup. It tasted like a very bland beef broth soup. No hot no sour just no flavor whatsoever. I also ordered the short-rib fried rice which also didn't have much flavor. And my shortrib was nothing but fat and gristle. My buddy had the combo fried rice and it was exactly the same. Wish it was a better experience. All who desire to dine here, make sure you carry your spice rack in your bag with you before you go. There's way cheaper Chinese places with way better food and bigger portions.

Yelp
The service is good. Kind of in an out of the way place in Trinity Groves area off Herbert. The inside was nice and clean. Everything was organized. Are kind odd a late lunch. Food came out as ordered and was delicious. It is open late. Make the effort and give them a try.

Amber

Yelp
Iri was a phenomenal waitress. Very friendly and helpful. Food was delicious and prompt.
google avatar

Ricky D.

Yelp
The area this restaurant is located has many choices. That being said I'd probably go to one of them before going back here. My entree kung pow chicken was on the dull side. No heat to it at all. The fried rice was basically just white rice with a little soy sauce added. No veggie and barely any egg. The pork egg roll was way under seasoned. The pork although plenty of it had no flavor. The wrap was thick, chewy and really added nothing to the roll itself except a way to hold it all together. I would go back if everything else was closed but that's about the only reason.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
After a night of drinks, checking this spot out 30mins before closing was well worth the last minute. You would think a dine in right before closing you would get not so good service. That was not the case! I will definitely be back for 2nds, 3rds etc... and the food was just so savory.
google avatar

Carissa S.

Yelp
I met a friend here yesterday those it was a little chilly and had been sprinkling all day. We sat outside under the covered patio and enjoyed taking in the Art Park's murals! The service was quick and friendly. We were surprised by the freshness and crispness of the egg rolls and dumplings. For our entrees I got the orange chicken which was delicious; it was very fresh and lightly battered filled with flavor. The rice surprisingly was not good which is the reason for the four stars; it was dry and hard. My friend ordered the wet noodles, and I immediately knew I had ordered the wrong things as soon as I saw it. It looked delicious!
google avatar

Glenn G.

Yelp
Tala was amazing. Great customer service. Attentive to our needs and wanted to make sure all our needs were met and exceeded our expectations.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
The food was ok, the service was not great, but the ambiance was great! I think this is a super fun spot to go to and sit outside.
google avatar

Katelyn B.

Yelp
Honestly the food was not good at all, granted I did order through uber eats but I don't think the delivery changed the food that much. My favorite out of the order was the soup dumplings but I even think frozen ones are better... I have 2 stars for effort.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
Another epic fail of Trinity Groves! This place use to be great, it's just another disappointment now as seems to be the case with most establishments here at TG. As soon as I saw the menu change I was hesitant, and wanted to walk out. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt and stayed. I asked when the menu changed to which the waitress replied "recently, we've had a change in management" which was the same excuse given to me by the staff at Holy Crust when asked about their change of menu. Which resulted in not only severely reduced choices in food items, but severely reduced quality. Having given Sum Dang Good Chinese the benefit of the doubt, it was met with dissatisfaction and disappointment. the House Fried rice was the most bland rice I'd ever had in my life, the chicken taste like premade freezer chicken. The beef was overcooked and tough, The hand pulled noodles were dry, and stuck together lacking a velvety silkiness. The lack of flavor at Sum Dang Good Chinese is an irony due to its name. It was an absolute waste of $80 for 3 people. I would no longer recommend this place to anyone! Though the ambience is the same, the quality is gone! As another fellow reviewer stated, I concur this is Sum Dang Nasty Chinese!

Yelp
We made a reservation here on a Friday night for 2. It's located in this area called Trinity Groves, which is a really cool outdoor spot with benches, food trucks, and a DJ. There are a bunch of restaurants lining the whole outdoor area, so when you walk through you can just take in the scents of all the great food. It's pretty hard not to get hungry by just walking around outside! We walked in for our reservation and sat indoors. They were busy, but not completely packed. Our server was really kind and helpful. I told her that I had a peanut allergy and she was able to check with the chef to make sure that nothing we ordered had peanuts in it. The Lychee Island Iced Tea was alright. It was pretty sweet, but I think I just wasn't in the mood for it that night. Normally I like sweeter drinks. I should've just ordered another drink. The chicken lettuce wraps here were AWESOME! I love lettuce wraps and they really hit this one out of the park! The lettuce was so crisp and fresh. The sauce that is served with the wraps is amazing as well. It was the perfect amount of food for the 2 of us as well! The Dan-Dan noodles were also a great choice. The fresh cucumber, fresh noodles, and flavorful sauce all went together so well in this dish. It wasn't spicy, but I still enjoyed it so much because there was so much flavor in the sauce. We couldn't finish the noodles, so we took it home. When I had it the next day as leftovers, it still tasted great. The eggplant was okay in my opinion. I'm personally super picky when it comes to how my eggplant is prepared and I just didn't like how it was prepared here. It was too soggy for me. Although, I will say the chili garlic sauce that they cook the eggplant in was nice and spicy. Overall, it's a great spot to grab some Chinese food. I hope to come back here and maybe try some dumplings next time :)

Yelp
In the revolving scene that is Trinity Groves when it comes to restaurants (fitting for the Dallas culinary world), we decided to dine in. The atmosphere is lively, though not overly packed. They have football on (always a + for me) and tennis. We chose to belly up to the bar and take a gander at Sum Dang Good food on the menu. We first ordered the combo dumplings (failed to take a photo... whomp whomp). Ranking based on seasoning and overall taste... #4) Pork (not all that impressive which was shocking) #3) Shrimp (only because I am not a huge shrimp fan, but was very pleasantly surprised) #2) Veggie (again, pleasant surprise with the seasoning) and #1) Chicken (beating out pork??? Really??) Hot & Sour soup - not gonna lie, one of the best I have had with the heat and flavor. I had to wipe my brow and fan myself for a minute. Hubs had the cucumber salad... if he reviewed, you'd have to read his for any feedback. Cucumbers and me = Never Ever Going to Happen!! Wuxi Spare Ribs = I shouldn't have had so many dumplings bc it's delicious! So in a nutshell, I'd def recommend based on flavor and atmosphere. P.S. Emily @ the bar... overheard her asking her manager to follow up on an order bc she thought it was taking longer than it should (not ours). I commend her for that... "Looking at Tomorrow, Today!" That is a quality I definitely want in my wait staff!

Yelp
The name is a give away - Texas-Chinese fusion! It was not worth the $80+ I dropped on lunch. We ordered scallops dumplings (gyoza), char siu bao, sesame chicken, and hoisin beef. The bao came dressed as a cold street taco, not as the cumulus cloud bao sold by street vendors of my youth, the scallop dumplings were cold and had a tough skin! Donna's sesame chicken was adequate, but she did request extra sauce after she took some bites. My hoisin beef lacked hoisin flavor and was topped with a fatty and chewy piece of rare (which I truly appreciated) brisket! Our entrees came donburi style (rice with meat on top), I should have read the menu more carefully and ordered my rice on the side. The service was excellent and the server earned his tip! I am sure the atmosphere is better in the evening with the live band, etc.
google avatar

Leticia S.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber Eats. The order was totally wrong but what I ended up with is pretty good.
google avatar

Luke R.

Yelp
Came in for dinner at the bar. Katie did a great job of taking care of me and was very attentive.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Wow can I give a Zero. This place use to be amazing. Nothing about my order was even eatable. The egg roll was completely uncooked, pretty sure the soup dumplings were made days ago. Food was delivered really quick but nothing was even warm. Beef and Broccoli was just broccoli and they forgot to put the General Taos chicken in the box. I'd love to find something positive but there really was nothing my order was $93 before tip. Shame on Some Dang Good for serving this crap. These photos were from when I opened the boxes before any food was removed.
google avatar

Kendy L.

Yelp
Came here skeptical about the Chinese food at a place located in a "gentrified" area. Honestly most of the food was not bad! The soup dumplings were pretty tasty. Delicious broth, sweet and savory meat filling. Presentation looked depressing though. The hand pulled noodles had great sauce. Noodles tasted and felt store bought and undercooked. Then we had their duck baos. The duck was really good surprisingly! However the bao was not fluffy and kind of tough. Lastly we ordered the spicy sichuan wontons. That dish was honestly nasty. The sauce had too much vinegar. It was sour and too acidic. The service here was fantastic. We were provided with full attention and the waiter always came at the right time for us to ask for more things. We were provided with many sauces. The place is aesthetically cool and you can hop around other cool places nearby. If we didn't have that last dish and had decent baos, this place would've gotten 4 stars from me.
google avatar

Eva G.

Yelp
Ordered through UberEats. The Hoisin Beef Bowl was literally a slab of rubbery, fatty meat on a bed of rice. It was inedible. The BAE Egg roll was certainly big. So big that the vegetables were mushy and uncooked. The wrapper was also not cooked all the way. We threw away a $50 order. The menu has changed, and maybe the owner or chef. The food used to be good, but this was just disgusting.
google avatar

Arpitha B.

Yelp
Its hard to find chinese restaurants with a good ambience. That's one of the main reasons this one makes the list! The ranch water drink was passable. The food was pretty good! Got the chicken dumplings which were fresh. The hand pulled noodles were good as well but could've had a bit more flavor and spice. The tofu chicken was good but a little sweet. Service was very fast and staff were friendly. It has outdoor and indoor seating which are both nice!

Fotis P.

Yelp
Food used to be amazing, now its barely edible. I recommended this place many times in the past. Never going back after today's visit. A little bowl of dry rice a few breaded micro cuts of chicken with zero taste and minimal vegetables for $16 is a rip-off! I don't know what changed but it wasn't for the better. Service was very good.
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
The atmosphere of the restaurant and the surrounding complex is pretty cool. I ordered the Combination Fried Rice and it was NOT GOOD! Everything came out bland w/ no taste. The beef was dry and even the chicken. The shrimp was ok, but even the rice was dry. And when the waitress saw my barely eaten bowl, just asked if she could take it away and bring me my check. So, attention to detail and customer service not so great....

Angel A.

Yelp
The food was tasty and fulfilling. Jesse was attentive, informative, and pleasant! Visiting from NYC and felt like home!

Yelp
No hot and sour soup?! It's dinner time. What's wrong with you? I was giving you another chance. So disappointed!

Yelp
My husband and I came here to eat before checking out freeplay for date night. Ambience: A Chinese restaurant that plays Mexican music, very weird but okay. We sat inside but it felt like we were outside Service: we were immediately greeted and seated only to sit for 15 min in a empty restaurant waiting on our waiter. We flagged down a different waiter once we did that our original came and brought us waters and took our order. My husband ordered sesame chicken, it was hard to chew but the flavor was nice. I ordered pork noodles which I thought would be slices of pork but it was actually grounded pork?? It was little flavor and not what I thought it would be. Overall I don't think we will ever come back.

Yelp
I love Trinity Grove and frequent Beto & Sons next door. Always wanted to try this place because it's always busy. Finally got to try it tonight and my only thought is just.. blah. I guess with today being Presidents Day people just were not out and about. The restaurant was 90% empty at 5:30PM and yet it still took forever to even see our waitress.
