Summer Palace

"This long-standing name has long been synonymous with quality food, so it’s hard to get a table, especially at lunch. The room exudes a timeless grace with décor inspired by the palace in Beijing. The menu is a roll-call of Cantonese classics – don’t miss their double-boiled soups and dim sum. Besides signatures like braised pig’s trotters with sand ginger, and braised Yoshihama abalone in oyster sauce, also ask about their seasonal offerings." - Michelin Inspector

Great food, we got the set tasting menu. At one point there was a giant gap between the courses but they picked it back up.

Usually we come here for Dim Sum and it is delightful, so we decided to get some Chinese New Year Pudding for year of the snake. We were very excited to try them out and we were utterly disappointed. We tried them both ways: pan fried and steamed. The pan fried slices turned out very rubbery, the steamed version was slightly better, but still had a very rubbery consistency.. it was in general quite tasteless too. We didn't even finish it and had to throw it away. It is a shame since one Turnip pudding costs $358, you will expect a high quality product. We have had far better Turnip puddings for lower prices, where the batter is smooth and filled to the brim with fillings. We usually order the Chinese New Year puddings from the Grand Hyatt, and they are far more superior. Maybe we were just unlucky this time and got a bad batch of the Turnip pudding...

Used to be even better, maybe due to CNY the chicken not as tender as before. Prices have increased a bit again but overall still one of the best.

On my first impression, the interior of this Michelin-starred restaurant looks very classy with many traditional Chinese decorative elements and also some poshy chandeliers 😍 Onwards to the food, I ordered the dinner set and really liked the pan-fried beef wrapped with asparagus in foie gras. This dish together with the chilled abalone were scrumptious! That being said, I didn’t find the baked egg fried rice and Chinese celery in lotus root dish any special 😐 However, overall it was a good dining experience with above average food and most service expectations were met 👍🏼

Google
Dimsum was good. Service needs work though, especially for a restaurant with a star. They forgot our main dishes, gave us the wrong dessert, and didn’t give us a candle after asking numerous times. They gave us the candle when we already paid the bill and were about to leave..

We have been here a few times with groups but never took pictures or wrote a review. This review is based on a recent lunch for two. The restaurant decor is palatial with very tall ceilings and many grand chandeliers. Tables well spaced apart for quiet quality dining. The food reflected its Michelin rating, the Cantonese roast meat platter of char-siu and crispy pork belly was one of the best we tried anywhere. Dimsums were superb with quality ingredients. Unlike many star rated restaurants where they give you tiny bit size portions, here the portions were generous. In summary, the decor and food truly befit the grand name of Summer Palace.

Google
The food quality and service here are consistently not bad, and the overall dining experience is quite positive. But during weekend dim sum, it can get crowded with all the tables full and the noise level high.

The pork belly (东坡肉) was delectable. The proportion of the lean and fat was perfect that leaves a sense of satisfaction without the (too much) guilt. It’s pricey of course.

Yelp
Came by for a late lunch the other day and it was an okay experience, despite being listed as a 2 starred restaurant in the 2017 Michelin Guide. Started off with their special honey BBQ Pork which was quite tender. I've had more flavorful BBQ Pork. Moved on to their XLB which were okay. Din Tai Fung or even Paradise Dynasty have a better one. The rice noodle crepe with crispy prawns was a good pick. The rice noodles weren't super thick and the crispy prawns provided a good contrast. Their black pepper beef short ribs were decent, same with their XO Sauce Seafood Fried Rice in a clay pot. The highlight of the meal was the mango pomelo Sago which had a robust mango flavor that wasn't too sweet. Definitely a must try! Restaurant was comfortable to sit in and we did have to wait 30 minutes for a table, despite arriving at 1:30 pm. Staff was professional in their demeanor and appearance.

Yelp
To be clear, there certainly wasn't anything bad in terms of the food, service or atmosphere. That said, there was also nothing in the cuisine to even remotely justify the 2 Michelin stars this place garnered. On the atmosphere, the restaurant was undoubtedly lavish with beautifully laid out tables, dishware, etc. Service was, like Golden Leaf, quite good though nothing exemplary. And the dim sum, the sum total of the many dishes sampled was lackluster given the accolades. Baked cha siu bao, siu mai, har gao, rice rolls...all good enough and honestly just at the level of a good, affordable restaurant in the Bay Area. The goon tong gao was actually outright disappointing as the meat inside was bland and dry. The one saving grace turned out to be some tasty hot Chinese herbal jelly, a preparation I've not seen at all in the US so far. For anyone with at least a decent amount of experience eating dim sum, I'd save your money and go elsewhere unless you're truly curious.

Yelp
I came here for dim sum lunch on a Saturday afternoon and I wasn't disappointed. Their BBQ pork buns are probably the best I've ever had. All of the dishes were tasty and the ingredients were high quality. Service was slow and inattentive for a Michelin star restaurant It is still worth the trip while visiting Hong Kong.

Yelp
Chinese restaurant in Island Shangri-La hotel. Only came here for congee so would judge based on that. The congee here is quite good / comforting though less creamy than the usual HK congee.

Yelp
I took my grandma here for the first time here to summer palace at the shangrila hotel in Hong Kong. This Chinese banquet style restaurant is very beautiful and nice. It would be somewhere you would want to take relatives or friends visiting Hong Kong for some quality Chinese food. The ambiance is great. Especially since it is located in one of the most beautiful hotels of Hong Kong. The shangrila. The reason I came here is because I received two five hundred American Express coupons that can only be used here. I then decided why not bring my grandma who loves Chinese food. We ordered half a Peking duck. It was quite well done. The skin very crispy. We also got a "yee meen" noodles suggesting longevity. It was also quite nicely done. Nothing truly outstanding and impressive here when it comes to food. I think my grandma wasn't very impressed but then again she is a hard judge. The ambiance and environment was 5 stars. I really liked the whole feeling of being like I was transported to the Tang Dynasty and eating inside the palace. However this place only gets a 3 star due to the mediocre food! Wouldn't mind coming back though. Ambiance does make a huge difference.

Yelp
It's rated 2 star by the Michelin restaurant guide. So the food is great and with great quantity. However, when ordering drinks from the bar, took way to long. Each round too over 30 mins. Our food came out quicker then our drinks sometimes. Besides that, great staff, and very knowledgeable. Would come again.
