Malibu’s SunLife Organics Joins the Mix at the Campus at Horton | Eater San Diego

"Originating in Malibu and now operating 15 stores across five states, SunLife Organics is expanding to San Diego as the newest member of the Campus at Horton project. Founder Khalil Rafati, who credits juicing and superfoods with his recovery from homelessness and drug addiction and calls his obsession with health and wellness a “borderline religion,” says he expects to open three to four stores in the San Diego area, including a Del Mar Highlands Town Center branch likely to launch before the Horton location; the Horton spot will be under Studio 3 Fitness next to the G Street entrance for Sprouts. The chain’s organic smoothies and acai bowls — some priced at $20 or more — are central to its offering, though Rafati acknowledges they may be out of reach for some, and Stockdale’s managing partner adds that SunLife’s emphasis on great food, community, health, and lifestyle aligns with the development’s vision." - Candice Woo

"COVID-19 Update: Open for pickup and delivery. Much more than just a juice bar, owner Khalil Rafati opened SunLife Organics in Malibu in 2011 to share what he’d learned through his own journey to wellness—which unsurprisingly involves lots of fruits, veggies, and some superfoods—in a community-oriented space. Amazing cold-pressed juices and acai bowls abound; their “Billion Dollar Smoothie” ingredient list includes reishi, cordyceps, hemp milk, and chlorophyll, just to name a few. If that’s not your thing, there are also sandwiches (think: grilled cheese, pesto panini) and sundaes made with their organic frozen yogurt. Along with several other Southern California outposts, they have a second Malibu location, too. COVID-19 Disclaimer: We are working hard to keep our listings as up to date as possible (deliveries, outdoor dining, etc.), but given the evolving nature of local COVID-19 restrictions, we recommend double-checking the information in this guide with any business you plan on visiting. Also, please note that we have not vetted any businesses listed within our guides for their compliance with applicable safety regulations."

Ugh it’s so sad to post this. I use to go to sunlife every day. But the quality and service has declined tremendously. My boyfriend got an açaí bowl and it was serviced to him as a bowl of liquid topped with granola. Açaí is supposed to be thick like ice cream and it wasn’t. So that was a bummer. Then I got a smoothie and I asked for the consistency to be thick. I received it and it was just like his, very liquid-y like a juice. And the products weren’t sitting and melting because I was waiting patiently (as they told me it would be a 15-20 min wait bc that location is busy always). When they called my name I was there waiting and took the products asap. So there was no time for them to melt. Therefore they just made super thin and liquidy products. Such a bummer.

This is the best health smoothie shop I've ever thought of. I've only heard about this place by word of mouth, but I finally got the chance to visit it this time. First of all, think of the location of this store as a large mall with various stores clustered together. Here, not only healthy drinks but also various stores where you can spend your day productively are abundant. The smoothies here are the epitome of health. All the ingredients are fresh, and no matter what menu you choose, they generously fill the smoothie with ingredients without skimping. Of course, customization according to personal preferences is also possible. If you are interested in health, serious about dieting, and interested in delaying aging, I recommend this store.

Their smoothies here are so good! I got the mushroom one. It tasted so yummy with lots of healthy things in it. It did take a little time to make because they were busy but there’s a nice big patio to sit at outside. The menu is big too.

Google
I love SunLife Organics — their smoothies are some of the best around. Yes, they’re on the pricier side, but the quality of the ingredients really shows, and everything tastes fresh and clean. Great spot when you want something healthy and delicious in Malibu.

Google
I’m a frequent SunLife customer and have visited this location several times. Since it can get quite busy, I placed my order ahead of time through the mobile app. I ordered two drinks, one of which required ingredient modifications due to sensitivities. The app made it easy to remove the two ingredients, and this was clearly noted on the cup when I picked it up. However, the drink still contained one of the ingredients - both as a topping and potentially blended inside. I flagged this with a team member at the counter, who told me I needed to remove it separately as both a topping and as an ingredient in the app. This seemed odd, since I had double checked the app and confirmed that removing an ingredient should remove it entirely. I went back and spoke to another staff member, who was much more understanding and remade the drink correctly. While I appreciated the resolution, the initial experience was disappointing especially at a place that emphasizes health and wellness. For anyone with allergies or sensitivities, I recommend ordering in person to ensure modifications are handled correctly.

Google
Super yummy and way bigger than I anticipated! Wish it was just a little colder as the açaí bowl was just a little melted.

Really fresh ingredients and a great selection of healthy and vegan choices. The location is wonderful and you can’t beat a Maui bowl on a sunny Malibu day.

Yelp
Came here after a hot graduation at Pepperdine and really needed a refreshing smoothie. I stumbled across SunLife Organics and they have a huge menu ranging from matcha, coffee, bowls, shakes, smoothies and more. They have a big counter to order from and have plenty of outside benches. I got their Pink Cloud Smoothie which came with banana, raspberry, hemp milk, dragon fruit and pineapple juice. I switched the rasberry for strawberry and it was so good. Very refreshing and the banana definitely overpowered the drink more. I would come back but the price at $13 is a bit wild.

Yelp
Updating my review for important reasons. Please read below if you have any allergies If I could give zero stars, I would. My boyfriend has a severe peanut allergy. Before ordering, we specifically asked if anything could be prepared safely without nuts. The staff assured us multiple times that they could accommodate and even said they would use separate tools and a different blender. We trusted them. Minutes later, my boyfriend went into anaphylactic shock and had to be rushed to the emergency room. This was one of the scariest experiences of our lives, and it was completely preventable. Food allergies are not a joke, and restaurants that claim they can handle them need to take that responsibility seriously. Their careless handling of allergens put his life in danger. If you or a loved one have any allergies, I strongly urge you to avoid this place. No smoothie bowl is worth ending up in the hospital.

Yelp
Everytime I'm about to go hiking, I come here and it's always so good and filling. They really got their recipe down. Inside is cool and fresh. They are quick with the drinks. They are friendly.

Yelp
I love this place for smoothies! It's always so good, and I can trust that they'll use good-for-you ingredients. It is a bit expensive but I do think it's worth the price. The staff are always so friendly and helpful and I think their philosophy of not having wifi in the cafe so that you can focus on being present. This location is also in Malibu, which is a nice area to stroll around. They also sell other snacks and powders (ie. matcha, protein, etc). It's a great one stop shop for a nice healthy treat. Definitely recommend trying this place out. They have several other locations too that I'm sure are just as great.

Yelp
We got the tropical breeze and pink cloud. The tropical breeze tasted of mangos, pineapples and bananas all blended nicely together. Each distinct fruit playing a role in a collaborative symphony of a smoothie. However, I didn't feel it was anymore special than what I have made at home. The pink cloud tasted like what pink would taste like if it was healthy. It wasn't like Jamba where you can clearly taste the overpoweringly sweet sherbet. Charging the price for a whole meal for each of these smoothies was astonishing. I don't think I'd come again because of that. This was not worth the price I paid for convenience. It was my friend's idea to get drinks from this place and she gets anxious around strangers sometimes so she tried to order online first. She went to the website which forced her to make an account. After making an account, it gave her an error message. She went through their whole process just to get nothing. This establishment should fix that. It was very busy when we got there. We waited in line for maybe three minutes. The cashier was nice but they asked my friend three times what her name was before finally asking how to spell it out. I understand they wanted to get it just right but they made it into a bigger deal than she thought it needed to be. The interior felt a little like a convenience store with the shelf of juices and greens. The aesthetic honestly wasn't my type. It felt like they just went with what was the cheapest to do. They have an iced water dispenser like Yogurtland if that interests you.

Yelp
Basically ice cream disguised as a smoothie haha! I was craving a smoothie and decided to give this place a shot. It's located in the Malibu Country Mart so parking might be a hassle depending on when you come. If you have time though, it's a great place to stop by and walk/shop around. Pretty small smoothie shop. They have a bunch of different smoothies in addition to acai bowls which seem equally as popular, as well as other vitamins and healthy snacks. I ordered the Mystic smoothie as I wanted something with plant-based protein. It came out pretty quickly. The presentation was beautiful! It was good and I enjoyed the cacao nibs on top as it was a nice little crunch. However, I also thought it was incredibly thick, like mine may have been made too thick? I wonder if it was an accident because I felt like I could barely suck up the smoothie at times. Still good, and made with good ingredients. I would probably get something next time though. I will also mention the prices here are very high, like some of the prices beat Erewhon.

Yelp
I wanted something healthy & refreshing so I ordered the Alchemist smoothie which included kale, cucumber, spinach, mint, fennel, mango, ginger, lemon, & aloe. Absolutely enjoyed it! I will definitely be coming back to explore another smoothie option when I'm in the area again! Highly recommend stopping by for a refreshing drink!

Yelp
Everything at Sunlife is fresh and delicious. I love their açaí bowls and I tried their avocado toast for the 1st time, which was very filling. They have a beautiful patio decorated with crystals. There's no seating inside. Everyone is always friendly, even when they get busy. It's pricey, especially their products (protein powders, candy, etc.), but the bowls are worth it. They do have a Billion Dollar bowl that's $40, which I haven't tried, but i'm intrigued!
google avatar

Yelp
This place had a really cool vibe. The drinks were really delicious. There was a ton of options. They have seating areas outside and it's worth a try.

Yelp
I had the most incredible vegan chocolate cookies with sea salt and caramel here! My friend ordered some fresh juices. Great friendly service and the ambiance was casual and nice. Everything was super clean.

Yelp
I must've have been lucky as I didn't have to wait too long in line or for my order!! All the employees were extremely friendly and helpful. I was in the process of ordering a smoothie that had an ingredient that ended up not being vegan friendly, and my cashier helped me with a better alternative. Glad she did. I got the mystic smoothie which I loved and highly recommend! My dragon smoothie bowl was exactly what you love you'd expect and any other smoothie joint. The café is super cute and basically like a little market. It has lots of grab and go vegan friendly, donuts, bars, salads, wraps, and you can also find on their shelves some products that are unique and catered to the beach, being in Malibu obviously. Out in the courtyard is a variety of tables to sit at for all customers in a playground. The only problem it was extremely windy that day. I would love to come back and try their vegan donuts and other smoothie bowls and definitely the Mystic smoothie!!

Yelp
Stopped in for a caffeine fix - ordered the iced strawberry matcha latte and it was delicious. This place is on the extreme healthy side so expect fresh ingredients and nothing on the artificial sugary side. Very delicious.

Yelp
Friendly service, lots of options for smoothies, açaí bowls and snacks. It felt a little overpriced for what well got but we are in Malibu so that's to be expected.

Yelp
Fave for yummy smoothies. Neat place at Malibu country mart. Wolverines smoothie is the best.

Yelp

Yelp
First off the parking at this location.. terrible. So be prepared for that. I tried the s'mores smoothie. For $21 I expected better. The presentation and look of the drink was beautiful, but the taste was just ok. If I'm going to pay that much for a drink I would rather just go get the $20 erewhon hailey Bieber smoothie and atleast it tastes good. Will try something different and go to a different location next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Worst Acai ever. Smoothies are great but wouldn't recommend their Acai. Not only did it taste horrible it also had no Acai. Not worth $20

Yelp
Best quality ingredients!! Most amazing juices, smoothies and juice bowls on the planet and I stand by it The service is amazing, the staff is very efficient and kind. When you walk in it's incredibly clean and smells like fresh juice. It's exactly the experience you hope for.

Yelp
rlly like their drinks and acai bowls! i love their matcha drink. it's a super cute spot and everyone has been nice and helpful!

Yelp
waited about 30 minutes for this smoothie so i highly recommend ordering ahead. it tasted really good and the ingredients worked well together.

Yelp
Maybe I just don't get the hype of bougie smoothie shops, but $12 + tax for a normal regular sized smoothie is pretty ridiculous. I decided to give it a shot thinking I might be blown away by how delicious it was... I ordered the Tropical Breeze which had banana, mango, and pineapple juice - it was decent although a bit sour for my taste, but the price makes it disappointing. I laughed when looking at their menu when I saw one of their drinks went for $32! +1 for the friendly workers and free parking
google avatar

Yelp
We love this place for smoothies . I only wish it was closer to our home. We make sure to go this shopping center for a healthy drink or two.

Yelp
This is one of those places where everything on the menu sounds like it would be a good time. I wish they had the menu broadcasted somewhere on a wall cause I didn't know what they had until I reached the counter after waiting in a brief line to order and their menu was pretty extensive. As more people came in, I felt a little rushed and had asked the staff at the register to provide a few recommendations. Their smoothies sounded good, but so did their açaí bowls. The Buddha Bowl is definitely worth trying if you have not already! It being my first time experience here, I came out with something super satisfying and it had hit the spot. The items here are on the pricier side, but you'll leave here feeling healthier and without a doubt an overall positive light of well-being. Do your body and mind a favor and relinquish your hard-earned $ to achieve the bliss and added energy that you deserve into your day. P.S. Please consider opening a location in the Bay Area, thank you!

Yelp
I love love love lovelove this place! They actually close at 8:00 PM. Every time I get something from them, I feel so good. The quality is exceptional, with many healthy options. The service is amazing, and it has great Malibu vibes.

Yelp
I am writing this review, not because one of my very best friends is the owner. Khalil. BECAUSE this is hand down the BEST ALL ORGANIC, smoothie shop! Everything is SO amazing. From the Wellness shots, to the Samurai Bowl... & the very best ice Matcha latte in the world!!! We come daily. No spot like it. Definitely definitely recommend! Everyone that works at all locations are so sweet, they hire the best people!!

Shauna S.

Yelp
Good morning I love you! Absolutely the best! clean pure ingredients made with love.

Yelp
Okay - so I love this place, strictly for the product they provide. When it comes to prices, it's a little high... but the literal worst part at the Malibu location is the service. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but Malibu is filled with entitled rich people... and the employees seem to cater to those people. I entered the building as a woman with her dog was viewing the menu outside on the door. I stood at the register, ready to order, CARD IN HAND. Literally took it out of my wallet and stood there, like.. I'm ready. Three employees were at work, but one was outside. The outside employee proceeds to come inside.. and holds the door for the woman who was viewing the menu on the door. Nice, right? Sure. This employee starts making small talk with the woman about her cute dog - gets her a treat - and yes I love dogs and yes she was adorable, but bro.. I'm right here. This woman. With her dog. Proceeds to walk right in front of me to the front of the register. Stands right at the register and starts saying 'I'm not sure what I want... what's good?' LIKE WHAT IN THE FRESH HELL??? the outside employee woman recommended something - she said okay - order was placed. I wish I had the balls to have been like, uhm excuse me, but did you not see me standing here? Both of you? Like... ew. I'll sacrifice on quality if it means having to deal with people like that. No thank you. I didn't say anything, and the employee didn't even say like a "sorry I didn't see you there" afterwards. Nothing. Bad taste in my mouth. Best bowl place in Southern California? BACKYARD BOWLS.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is very welcoming and yummmm!!! The staff are friendly and attentive and I feel definitely a part of the community there, which is a very positive vibe. The pricy smoothies and bowls are yummm but also very healthy-.

Yelp
On 11/24 around 3 p.m., I paid $20 for an açaí bowl, but after waiting 45 minutes and seeing everyone ahead of me get their order first, I checked in and was told they completely forgot my order. When I finally received it, the bowl was completely melted. No compensation was offered.
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
So refreshing and tasty! Great location by the beach. Would come back for sure. Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
A little bougie smoothie shop in a Malibu shopping plaza. The people working there were super sweet and friendly! And they left very nice notes on the cups. I got the Pink cloud, which has banana, raspberry, dragon fruit, hemp milk, and pineapple juice. For $11 it was definitely pricy, but the cup was sizable. We shared amongst 2 people and it was enough. The dragon fruit is hard to make out in the drink unless you get a seed, and it's generally over powered by the banana and pineapple juice. You can also taste the hemp milk, which gives it a nuttier dimension. Not too sweet, which is good. Honestly, tasted pretty good, just too expensive for what it is.

Alita H.

Yelp
4 people behind the counter. 1 person taking orders AND making the food. Not quite sure what the other three are doing??? Food/drink is fresh. Be prepared to wait for your order while the "workers" do their thing.
google avatar

Athena B.

Yelp
Definitely a solid bowl loaded with fruit but super expensive. I got the dragon bowl.

Yelp
I love SunLife, and this location is a great one. I love their outdoor patio area with large tables and plenty of seating. They even have giant crystals in their planters around the patio area!! Weekend mornings can get busy and it takes a while for them to make your order, so be prepared to wait. Their smoothies actually taste really good, and they have so many bowl options. Although their prices are a bit high (most of them are $15+ for a bowl), I like that they use great quality ingredients and pack each bowl with a ton of toppings. This time, I got their Bliss Bowl. Their açaí base is decent (a little sweet for my taste), and I appreciated the copious amount of toppings, but I thought it was a little too nutty for me. A bit too much on the nuts. There aren't any fresh fruits in this bowl besides bananas, which I would've liked.
google avatar

Junavy F.

Yelp
LOVE this place. Is it at an affordable price point? Not exactly, but that's to be expected in Malibu. So while I wouldn't frequent this spot everyday, I HIGHLY suggest stopping by if in the area. Their menu includes everything from coffees to smoothies to smoothie bowls. They also sell other health & wellness products. Their smoothies and smoothie bowls are PERFECTION. My all-time fave is the Hawaiian Bowl (I'm a big coconut fan). I love that their ingredients are fresh and their bowls are brilliantly curated. Quick hack: while I've easily crushed a bowl on my own, you can also ask to split a bowl into two half portions if you want to split it with someone else! The half portion is still plenty and they don't skimp on the toppings. 100/10 recommend this place for quick service and top-notch healthy eats!!!
google avatar

Breanna R.

Yelp
Amazing service! The Buddha bowl was so good! Can't wait to return. I also really loved their wellness shots.
google avatar

Yelp
Smoothie is life changing - great vibes. Lots of bees but they are friendly. No seating inside
google avatar

Ryan K.

Yelp
I come here for the açaí bowls and haven't tried anything else. They're on the expensive side but I haven't found bigger bowls anywhere else. The ingredient quality is also pretty high. Parking can be a pain at busy times but if you're willing to walk there will be something. It's also really close to a beach so I have a good time getting a snack and then walking around the beach.
google avatar

Yelp
I recently starting regularly visiting Sunlife both at Century City and Malibu and it is now my favorite juice/smoothie/bowl spot in LA. The staff is always super friendly and helpful in finding what is right for you each time. My favorite items to order now are the "Fountain of Youth" smoothie ($11.95) and the "Brazilian Bowl" ($12.95). Although the items are pricier and the items typically take a longer time to come out than most places, the quality and taste are worth it. There is a significant difference between Sunlife and comparable places all throughout West LA. I hope to get through more of the menu soon and try everything!
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
Outstanding quality yet pricey. Would come again, portions match what you pay for. 8/10.
google avatar

Kislev A.

Yelp
I thought Erewhon had the most expensive smoothie ever... I was mistaken: SunLife Organics does! Didn't order that though. I've been meaning to try one of their shots so I tried the Brain On Shot. I'm not a regular shot-taker so I can't tell you the long term health effects. But... I can tell you I was awake and able to get to my to do list on that day!

Yelp
Came here to get two açaí bowls the girl at the counter told me I'd be a 10 minute wait, I went across the street looked in a store came back after 10 minutes then waited off to the side for 20, started to feel like something was wrong with my order and as im watching one of the guys who was assembling the bowls start to run his fingers through his hair with his gloves on, as he proceeded to grab strawberries I got his attention and let him know off to the side that he should change his gloves When he walked off to do so all the workers had to stop what they were doing to go ask him what had happened (which is ridiculous)& that's when the girl who took my order at the front noticed me, asked me my name and told me my card had never went through so my order was never put in, after 20 minutes of me standing to the side (with her looking my way) you're going to barely tell me this I canceled my order as nice as possible because I wasn't going to wait longer and her response was almost as if she was holding back laughing... for what?
google avatar

Yelp
Welcome to late capitalism where "ceremonial grade matcha" is not hand whisked in 175 degree water and slowly enjoyed but rather dumped into a witches brew of other ingredients and blended at breakneck speed. The prices here are outrageous and are joined perhaps only by college tuition in how quickly they have outpaced inflation. Photos from within the last year betray the enormous price increases (min. 15%) and there are plenty of moderately sized smoothies being sold for $19 and up. Cruelly ironic that they have all this signage about "be here now" and a farm of crystals outside but are ruthlessly profiteering like any oil magnate or VC would have it (many of whom are probably the patrons). The real kicker? You can't even pay in cash. What? I guess only some kinds of legal tender are allowed. Glad I can go to west Harlem where I get bigger and better smoothies for $6-8. This place is a yawner. 2 stars for ok service, good quality, and the option to split into two containers. Update - just saw another review which featured a photo attachment of an instagram story, in which the customer said SunLife was his favorite post-cryotherapy treat. Epitome of the clientele

Yelp
- Locale Destination - It's on cross creek rd and PCH in Malibu. Once you get into the shopping center, Malibu village, on your left side. Ambiance: casual. Plenty outside seating. Service: friendly. You get the text when your order is ready. Not too long wait. Parking: plenty - Gluttony Expedition - Green machine: light in sweetness, not bitter unlike the color. Very light overall. I prefer a bit thicker consistency to runny. - Conqueror's Deduction - $12+ for ok smoothies.. The price nowadays have gone nuts! Malibu price, for sure.

Yelp
Very tasty açaí bowls. Quality was definitely there, but I had to take one star away for the high pricing. The quality isn't so great to warrant such high prices. I had the Buddha bowl and would get it over and over again.

Yelp
One of my favorite smoothie spots in LA. This time I got The Yogi and my fiancé got the Athlete. I love that you can order online ahead and they're usually pretty quick if you use their website. 4 stars because I can't really justify $15 for a smoothie every time. But otherwise SunLife is solid.
google avatar

Julia K.

Yelp
The last two times I came here, my açaí melted into a guey mess within 5 minutes. I had them remake it but it happened again. I am guessing the proportions used is not correct in some of their acai Bowls. Very disappointed given the price point. I'll stick to backyard bowls and Erewhon açaí bowls for now.

Yelp
Not a fan - I've definitely had better bowls to go than SunLife Organics. First off, I want to say that they do an amazing job with adapting to COVID - everyone's wearing gloves and masks, there's markers on the floor on where to stand in line, glass coverings near the register, etc. But the overall bowl & experience wasn't as pleasant as I would have expected. While watching the members prepare the bowls, there was a lot of acai blending, pouring it in the bowl, realizing that it's too tough, pouring it back in the blending and etc. While we were waiting, one woman came in and said it was too watery so it seems that the acai was not consistent. When we finally got our bowls, it was definitely lower than our expectations. Like walking in to see a movie that everyone raved about just to come out disappointed & wanting your money back. It was $12 for the Hawaiian Bowl and was just unsatisfied at all. But I had to finish it because it's $12 lol. There was too much granola that I felt my jaw about to break (not proportional to the amount of acai), and mushy bananas and I wished they gave more strawberries. Overall, I would probably not come back here again - I just didn't enjoy the taste of the bowl.
