4 Restaurants to Try This Weekend in Los Angeles: September 6 | Eater LA

"The line of petite Taiwanese mooncakes produced by Sunmerry Bakery strikes a fun balance between traditional and modern: nearly a dozen flavors include the classic red bean with a salted egg yolk center, contemporary ube milk and oolong matcha varieties, and a chocolate lava mooncake that’s perfect for first-timers curious about the tradition. I grew up eating the denser Vietnamese-style mooncakes—packed with preserved meat, nuts, and fruit—but I find Sunmerry’s lighter Taiwanese versions a more approachable option for many palates." - Eater Staff

They often have drink promotions—this time it was buy one, get one free! Their cakes are beautifully decorated, and the bread is really tasty. They frequently introduce new types of bread too. Now they’ve even added a bagel section and a Melomelo corner. My favorite is definitely their Oreo boba milk tea!

It's my first time here, and walking in, it felt a little bit fancier than an 85* or Paris Baguette. I had visited shortly after they opened for the day, and a few employees were placing fresh pastries in mini bags to be displayed for people to grab an go. They seemed to have a signature item called a Bolo. I had asked one of the girls there is this like the pineapple bun that most places have? She didn't know. I asked about the BBQ bolo, and all she could tell me was that it had the red wet meat in it. It's not the best explanation, but I just kept working my way around. Once, I was at the register to pay. I asked the lady about the Boli bun again, and she was like, there's no pineapple in it. I had to educate her and tell her they call it a pineapple bun because the outside texture was like a pineapple. There was one other lady who worked there that stepped in and answered my questions about the drinks. She was super knowledgeable and helpful. Items I purchased: 1. Iced mango matcha - This was a delicious drink. I'm happy I had picked this instead of a Vietnamese coffee. The matcha was fluffy and thick like a milkshake with the mango it was perfection. 2. Chocolate concha - I love the chocolate pieces on the outside and the surprise hazelnut on the inside. This was easily one of my favorites. 3. Bolo bun - Basically a pineapple bun. 4. Taro mochi - Nice and fluffy. I kind of wished it had a little more taro in it. 5. Strawberry and matcha white chocolate donut - Very tasty and chewy. I liked that it didn't have a greasy feel to it. 6. Strawberry cloud donut - This was a delicious surprise. Nice and fluffy. Strawberry filling wasn't overly sweet. 7. Almond cookies - Crispy and flavorful 8. Peanut brittle candy - My family enjoyed this. Crunchy and not overly sweet. Overall, everything I tried was amazing. I can't wait to come back and try the Japanese bagels. My only recommendation is to educate employees a little more on the items being sold. It's unappealing when employees don't know the items or let alone tried it.

Not too sweet but how come when we were at the shop around 4pm most of the bakery are almost gone. Cos they are closing late at night. Not so many items to choose and buy

The owner doesn't turn on the air con, so the bread will become bad faster. The shop is also so hot inside that I think it is even cooler outside, even though it is summer right now. The bread is not very good either. They don't close at the time they say they are, they close an hour early because they will put everything away an hr before, so you cannot buy anything.

This is one of the best bakeries in all of southern California! I will buy all my cakes and pastries from this place and I jave yet to get anything that just tasted okay.everything has been amazing! Hands down this bakery makes great tasting not overly sweet pastries.. I do wish they made individual size pieces of the mango mouse but I guess I will just have to suffer

Their bread is always fresh & delicious, my favorite has become the pudding breads for sweet & Tuna for something salty. Teas are always good especially the Jasmine Lemon Green tea. Edit: May 2, 2025 I never had issues with service at sunmerry and I've always gotten their teas dozens of times but today today's server was Nicole W who had gotten my order completely wrong. Ordered a tiger coffee but she gave me a tiger milk tea & my Jasmin Lemon GT had no sugar at all when i had ordered it with regular sugar. Other than that, their drinks are typically on point besides today.
