The 20 Best Lunch Spots In Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"This tiny omusubi shop is open every day and these stuffed rice balls make for one of our favorite quick lunches in the city. We usually go for the tender miso beef with caramelized onion, the curried chicken, or the spicy cured salmon, and since everything’s under $5, why not get all three? Plus, they have free barley water, which helps us reach peak hydration." - sylvio martins, jess basser sanders

19 Superb Santa Monica Restaurants

"This longtime fast-casual restaurant on Main Street in Santa Monica serves the delightful comforts of Japanese onigiri, filled rice balls that are a popular and affordable snack found in Japan’s convenience stores. Sunny Blue takes the format to new heights with curry, miso beef, spicy salmon, mentaiko, and pickled vegetarian options, all at reasonable prices. A nice departure from the mostly pricey restaurants of the Westside." - Eater Staff, Matthew Kang

Google
Made to order omusubi?!? 🤯 We were still a bit hungry after a near by lunch and saw everyone walking around the street with fresh omusubi, so it was decided we had to drop in! This quaint little shop is packing a big punch with made to order omisubi and boba drinks. We had such a hard time deciding which to try, as they all looked good, but landed on the pork belly, spicy tuna, and a boba ice tea. Wow!! The rice was perfectly warm and the seaweed was so fresh and crunchy. The toppings brought in so much flavor as well, making each omusubi unique. You could feel the love. Definitely will be stopping by this location more this summer, as this was the perfect light bite and their tea was hitting just right.

Was passing by and decided to try. It was a Saturday evening, the place was pretty busy. I ordered things I know from other Japanese places - Miso soup, whatever rice thing with beef and with chicken curry. I got miso soup really quick but it was barely warm and very salty so I threw the half of it into the trash. After like 15 mins - because they forgot about my order - I finally got my two rice small balls with fillings. It was like 80% of rice mixed with 20% of the protein - not a balanced ration. Rice was bland, the amount of protein was not enough at all and the taste was not memorable at all. One and done and will never come back

Sunny Blue is a casual Japanese restaurant in Santa Monica, California, specializing in OMUSUBI (Japanese rice balls). This restaurant, located just a few streets away from Santa Monica Beach, is always bustling with young Americans. They offer 15 different varieties of OMUSUBI and sides, including Yuzu Pork Belly, Smoked Salmon Roll, and Udon. While they all have a Japanese influence, the quality doesn't quite match authentic Japanese standards. However, the variety of toppings and the convenient style of omusubi seem to be popular in the US as well.

My kids absolutely love eating at Sunny Blue! It’s quick, easy, and always delicious. The food is fresh and flavorful, and the service is fast — perfect for a casual meal or a quick stop after school. Highly recommend!

Google
i live around here and just recently discovered this place. it’s quickly become my new favorite! there’s usually a line but they’re quick to get you your order. feels authentic and the food is delicious! only downside is no seating (one bench outside but good luck getting that seat) so we walk down a little further to eat. my only other complaint is that they charge for siracha on the side in a small container. but will be back and recommend others to try this spot

Google
Wanted a quick snack before heading back home and we were hungry but not starving ! Found this spot in Santa Monica . The service was great . No where to really sit or stand inside . We ordered four different flavors . They ran out of the mushroom unfortunately, but we had two different tuna’s , the salmon and the eggplant . The tuna mayo was our favorite the rest weren’t bad !nice snack place Its decent for what it is and simple .

My friend took me to the cutest musubi shop after our Pilates class! I asked the guy working there and who was Japanese which one he recommended and I ended up trying the miso beef and the curry pork musubi. Both were so delicious and of course I saw the lychee oolong boba tea so I had to try that too. The staff are super friendly service was quick and the food was yummy! I’m definitely recommending this spot to more people and can’t wait to come back!

Google
Expect a line out the door, but it's worth it! The rice, meat, and seafood are super fresh, and you can choose from a wide selection of proteins. Orders are made fresh, so expect a wait as this place can get crowded. However, it's worth it for some of the freshest omusubi I've had such as salmon, Chicken, shrimp and pork . The staff are knowledgeable and will help you make your selection.

Yelp
Best Japanese triangles (omusubis) ever! I love the beef, chicken and salmon flavors. There is no seating and is a to go place. The service is pretty fast, but sometimes there is a line. Must try!

Yelp
Tasty food that was fun to eat! My daughter and her boyfriend are regulars here. She introduced me to Sunny Blue this past weekend. It is located in a popular area in Santa Monica on Main Street with several other businesses. There is a public lot behind the restaurant and street parking in front. The eatery is somewhat small but also somewhat busy. Like many others I noticed, we ordered takeout. I was thrilled with how many vegetarian options were available. We ordered several varieties of the Omusubi, Cucumber Sunomono, Udon and the Pork Belly Yuzu. The wait for our food was about 20 minutes. The Omusubi packaging was both adorable and functional. Portion sizes were good. I was full after 3 Omusubis. My favorite was the Lucky Cat Omusubi. The favorite for the meat lovers in our group was the Omusubi with chicken. Least favorite was the udon. Pricing was reasonable. I can't wait to return!

Yelp
LOVE this place. Quick and easy. Lovely staff. Fresh produce. If you're looking for something to take to the beach, this is perfect

Yelp
Wanted to love this, but I was pretty underwhelmed... I got the chicken current omusubi. I liked that there's an option to get it warm if you're eating it in person or within 20-minutes. I liked that they sprinkled a dusting of some curry powder on it. But that's about it. I kept eating...and more.. and more.. and more... of the rice. But where was the filling? Taking another bite in eagar anticipation... waiting to get to the filling. I finally got to a tiny piece of chicken that was really mild in flavoring. As in, it wasn't very flavorful at all. For what it is, and all the hype, it seemed really stingy with the chicken filling, and the chicken filling was underwhelmingly bland. I couldn't really taste the curry flavoring at all. In fact, I think the biggest taste I got of the curry flavor came frome the curry seasoning in my first bite, and after that, it was rice and more rice, and bland chicken.

Yelp
Craving satisfied! Great place to grab a quick bite to eat!! I thoroughly enjoyed this quick spot to grab a bite to eat. We came around 5pm on a Saturday evening. There was a long line, however, they were quick to get the orders out & very attentive. There's not much seating around the restaurant. Now for the food! Curry chicken 10/10: customer favorite! Great flavor! Mayo tuna 6/10: tuna was a bit dry Eggplant chili 6/10: honestly, was not a fan of the chili they used, it tasted like "guachugan" Korean chili paste & I am not a fan of it I will definitely visit again & try their different flavors!

Yelp
Sunny Blue is definitely worth a visit if you're in the mood for some delicious and fresh fare! We ordered four of their signature dishes, and each one was super good. The flavors were vibrant and the ingredients tasted incredibly fresh - definitely a craving-satisfier! We opted to have our food wrapped to go, and while it was a bit tricky to open them up and keep them intact, it was worth the effort for the tasty rewards inside. The quality of the food more than made up for any minor inconveniences with packaging. The only downside was the long line and the lack of seating inside the store. It's a bit of a hassle if you're planning to eat on-site, but the delicious food makes it all worthwhile. Overall, Sunny Blue delivers fantastic food that's well worth the wait. Highly recommended if you're after something super tasty and fresh!

Yelp
Love the friendly staff here. Was my first time here and they made some solid recommendations. I got the miso beef and spicy salmon in a bento box as it comes with edamame, pickled cucumbers as solid sides to pair with to Omusubi. The place doesn't offer seating but definitely enjoyable on the go outside for the vibes. Definitely eat it fresh on the spot, but if you prefer take out then it'll come wrapped up to prevent the seaweed from becoming soggy.

Yelp
Today, my friends and I went on a little journey to Santa Monica and decided to give Sunny Blue a try!! me and onigiri are like this I LOVEE onigiri I've been craving it for a few weeks now, so I was so glad we got the chance to stop by. The Sunny Blue in Santa monica is located in a cute little area with lots of restraunts and spots to hang around! I would recommend ordering to go because it gets pretty busy, especially during the evening. The interior of the restraunt was so cute, I didn't get a pic of the menu, but for each onigiri they had a little graphic drawn on the side, it was literally the most adorable thing ever:((. My friends and I took our order to go to eat at the beach. While the onigiris were not bad, I was a little disappointed because I had definitely had better before. The rice was a bit too mushy, and for one of my onigiris, I barely had any filling, which was literally so sad. Also, I had ordered a kitsune udon and for the price it was not exactly worth it. I paid $8 and the portion was TINY and it just tasted like udon with miso soup. Perhaps maybe the onigiri and the udon didn't hit as hard because I didn't eat it right away when it was warm, but either way it was still disappointing:(( 3 onigiris is a good amount for a meal!

Yelp
Who does love a quick and easy bite while you're hanging out in Santa Monica?? Sunny blue is just the right place for a super small snack but also if you want to fill up, you can! I love their spicy salmon, tuna kare, mentaiko and the shiso with ume!

Yelp
Great spot for some omusubi! We ordered the miso beef and spicy salmon which were delicious! They have tons of options which is great. Service was very quick and kind. If you do not know what to get, simply ask for their recommendations. No indoor seating. Will definitely be back to try their other flavors!
google avatar

Sabrina L.

Yelp
Some omusubis are tastier than others but if you love rice and fresh seaweed, that alone is worth coming to try this spot. We enjoyed the miso beef & spicy eggplant. Their other flavors were a tad more mild in flavor. My kids love love love spam musubi and tried it here but it didn't look terribly different or special than other places. But again, the rice and seaweed are high quality and fresh so that they enjoyed them. I love the outside eating area. Although small, it's decorated so cutely that you can imagine you are in Japan! I wasn't a huge fan of the sides I tried so the next time the kids & I are in the area, we'd stick to just the omusubis.
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
So disappointing! I was really excited to try out sunny blue but it wasn't my cup of tea. The line was long, the wait for food was long, and the omusubis were so tiny for the price! I tried the chicken curry and the spicy salmon and both had too much rice, too little filling, and the seaweed they used felt very poor quality. I've had many omusubis before and I would consider the Japanese supermarket ones better than what they had here.

Yelp
Love this place! My husband and I took a day trip to Santa Monica pier and walked to Sunny Blue for lunch. We tried four omusubi- Japanese spicy caviar, curry chicken, spicy salmon, and Kara tuna. I also got a lychee tea and my husband and kimchi. Staff was really nice and answered any questions we had. The omusubi was ready quickly also and you can see them making it fresh behind the counter. They were delicious-- soft warm rice with the perfect touch of filling, a tiny crunch in the bite from the seaweed, and they don't skimp on the filling! I think my fav was the curry chicken. It's a very small place with nowhere to sit. It'd be nice if they had a few tables/chairs outside but we just kind of ate on the curb. I wish sunny blue wasn't all the way across the country from me!
google avatar

Kezia S.

Yelp
Food is 10/10. Price is 5/10. Dine in is 0/10.... Because they have no seats. It may not be their fault but they should definitely open up outdoor sitting. This place is too good to not have dine in seatings for their customers to enjoy their food and potentially order more. I have to say their prices are quite expensive for rice and seaweed and whatever filling you are choosing. I do have to rave on their curry omusubi. Holy cow. I don't know if it was the aftermath hunger of pickleball but the flavors were too good. I wanted to buy more for my family but the price stopped me. I would buy a lot of these for a special occasion.
google avatar

Jada W.

Yelp
The place was cute and the staff was super friendly. The price of the onigiri were expensive compared to other places. My favorite one was the spicy salmon. The miso beef and curry ones were a little sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
Small little rice ball shop with no indoor nor outdoor seating. I felt like the rice balls were a little small for what you pay but they were delicious nonetheless.

Yelp
My husband and I tried this place many many years ago, must have been before I was even into Yelp because I don't even have a review for it! Whenever we are in Santa Monica, we stop by, which is saying something because we usually don't go to the same place again...there's just too many options in SoCal! But this place is the exception. First of all, there really aren't many places you can just go to grab a quick onigiri like this. And second, it's such a great idea for a quick casual snack, or even a full meal if you get a couple of them! It's not a dine-in place so it's truly perfect for a road trip or to bring down to the beach. I am so impressed they've survived through the pandemic and I'm happy we got to visit yet again. On today's visit we got the Miso Beef (which I think we get every single time) and tried the Kara Tuna for the first time. Comes out freshly molded and so warm. Loved the cucumbers inside of the Kara Tuna one. The Miso Beef always hits the spot, although it does seem more crumbly and falls apart easier, maybe from the weight of the filling. Next time I need to branch out and try other ones but the Miso Beef is too good!
google avatar

Jennifer D.

Yelp
I heard great things about this spot before coming here but was unfortunately a little disappointed. We stopped by on a Saturday late afternoon and it was pretty busy - ended up waiting way longer for our food than expected. We ordered three onigiris - miso beef, spicy salmon, and tuna mayo - tasty but nothing special. Each onigiri is almost $5 and for the quality and size I'm not sure I'd come back. If you haven't had before, definitely swing by to try but I don't think I'd go out of my way to come back.

Yelp
This place was recommended by someone with a love for omusubi. So glad that my friend and I made a stop on our short trip to LA. We couldn't decide on which flavors to order, so we ended up with ordering 7. This was the perfect size for hungry gals after a long flight to the west coast. Spicy Salmon, Sunny Blue Curry, Tokyo Tori, Miso Beef, Pork Ginger Curry, Umeboshi, Mushroom Our collective winner was the Mushroom. My all-time was the umeboshi, while hers was the Pork Ginger Curry. The filling to rice ratio was perfect. Just enough filling and not a lot of rice. Price was so cheap for the quality and portion you're getting. Service was fast and friendly. You order at the counter. They ask that you do not film the process of making the omusubis. The place is small, so there is no seating, but there is a small public park area that many come to sit and enjoy their meals.
google avatar

Chelsea F.

Yelp
Perfect spot to grab a light lunch before hitting the beach. The store is small and theres no seating inside but the service is relatively quick consid it's made to order. Tried the spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and miso beef omusubi and all of them were good. Could easily eat 3+ in a sitting.
google avatar

Linda Y.

Yelp
This place is great if you need a light snack! However, they do overpack the rice. It's best to eat it warm! The two chefs are pretty fast at making the little nori sandwich and I would definitely recommend getting 3-4 to fill you up! This place is a small little joints so you're gonna have to take it to the beach and enjoy it with the sunset.
google avatar

Charlotte B.

Yelp
Really good onigiri! Rice was hot and fresh, really delicious. One star off because it felt weird to order while the guy was making the food, felt like I wasn't really getting the best customer service. Like, I didn't get what was going on, haha are you mad at me for coming here?
google avatar

Love B.

Yelp
Food was amazing, staff is rude and entitled. Won't be coming here again only on the fact of the staff members
google avatar

Yelp
The best omusubi! So flavorful everything is made fresh to order. I wish there was one in southbay as well it's so delicious!!
google avatar

Ethan P.

Yelp
Great grab and go spot for omusubi. Although there's no where to sit, it's a 8 min walk to the ocean which makes it a nice beach snack. Lots of vegan options. Kara tuna is solid and if you're feeling adventurous try the sunny blue curry. Service here is excellent and they offer hand sanitizer which is plus
google avatar

Miranda M.

Yelp
A long line on a Saturday afternoon, but it went fast. This place has been on my list for awhile as I've never had omusubi before. There is no seating inside, we stood outside and ate. I didn't know going in, but the fish is all cooked. I got the spicy salmon, kara tuna, and miso beef. Even after the initial shock of cooked fish, I still enjoyed these little rice balls. My favorite ended up being the miso beef because of the miso sauce. These are deceivingly big! I got 3 but definitely was definitely full after 2. Overall I enjoyed the omusubi, I think it's a great beach snack and I'd go back!
google avatar

Shelly S.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick snack on Main Street. They don't have seating options, so I walked down to the beach and enjoyed this delicious treat. It is made ready to eat, so plan on eating them within 15 minutes of ordering. I wanted to try a vegetarian and non-veg option, so I had the mushroom and sweet and sour chicken omusubi, which were delicious and flavor packed. The mushroom was a little more rice heavy for me, but I still was able to finish the serving without a problem. Sweet and sour chicken was moist and savory. Plan to park on the street or the parking lots behind main. Price is right, will be back to try the rest!
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
Healthy. Cheap. Fast. Easy. This place is great. I eat here at least once a week and look forward to it every time. The staff is spectacular. I feel like I'm getting to see friends every time, especially on off-peak hours when there isn't a line. I get 2 - miso beef, Kara tuna, spicy salmon or yuzu pork depending on the day - and either eat them on my way home from the gym or walk to the beach. There can be a bit of a wait on weekends so I recommend ordering a lychee boba green tea to keep you company. It's never longer than 5-10 minutes. TLDR: come here.
google avatar

Yelp
Made to order omusubi (aka onigiri), since 2010. If you are unfamiliar, this popular Japanese snack is a rice ball with different fillings inside, wrapped in dried seaweed. It is most commonly found individually wrapped in plastic at convenience stores in Asia, but Sunny Blue offers a fresh take. This cute, tiny shop offers an impressive variety of onigiri, with plenty of meatless options. The omusubi were delicious. Fresh, fluffy rice, crisp nori, and ample, flavorful fillings. My favorite was their "Lucky Cat", which contains Japanese pickles, fresh wasabi, ginger, and bonito. The Wasabi Tsukudani (pickled wasabi and konbu!) was bursting with flavor, and the Mentaiko had a nice spicy kick to it. The employees were genuinely friendly. I dock one star because the Matcha Almond Latte was terrible. It tasted like a cup of plain almond milk, filled with boba that was so hard, it hurt my teeth to chew. Stick to omusubi at Sunny Blue.
google avatar

Sofya P.

Yelp
Love the prices. Decent omusubi, simple nothing crazy. Got the Kara, it was good but I wish it had more in it. The line was a bit long and no seating area.
google avatar

Beatrice M.

Yelp
Happened to stumble upon this gem on our long layover in LA. Each nigiri was so good that we decided to even bring it on the plane for snacks. Service was fast. No seating but who cares. We'd come back in a heartbeat whenever we're in the area.

Yelp
I've been searching for a great omusubi or onigiri State side since my Japan trip and haven't come across a decent option . . . until now. Sunny Blue has definitely been the best place to get your onigiri fix in Los Angeles, maybe even California. I stopped by mid afternoon and there were a few people waiting for orders but the cashier was kind enough to offer some suggestions and answer any questions I had. I initially just wanted two but she recommended two more, and although I wasn't really hungry (I was just grabbing a few to hold me over since I knew I wouldn't have time to eat later) the onigiri you are given are definitely bigger than the display example on the counter! SO! Fair warning - these onigiri are bigger than you think! I started off with the Royal Milk Tea which was delicious! Smooth, refreshing, and a bold taste of the tea which didn't overpower the drink but offered a much stronger taste than most milk teas you get at actual "boba" shops. For the musubi I'll share my favorite to least favorite, but will say the rice was fantastic on each and so well made and put together. Each one is made to order and you'll see the staff forming each one right at the counter. The nori also stays crispy for the perfect bite. Tuna mayo - really the simplest one but it was just so good! Not overly mayo but still creamy and plenty of tuna! It's a classic and stays strong with that taste. Miso Beef - I was really surprised at how good this was! Slightly sweet, slightly salty, tender beef, and so much of it. It was saucy and sticky and so good. Spicy Salmon - I liked it but will say I think the cured salmon is a bit too strong, more so fishy than I expected. But because I love salmon I am used to that taste when it comes to any cured or smoked salmon. But here that taste over-powered any other flavor from the sauce or spice. Tokyo Tori - although this wasn't "bad", I really wasn't a fan (and sorry to the cashier who said this was her favorite lol!). I initially thought this was beef because the texture was a bit off and odd, and the flavor was overly sweet and the sourness didn't quite work here. Overall, an absolutely solid spot and I'll be happy to return

Yelp
Amazing omusubi in the city!! At first, I was hesitant to try. Being Japanese, I'm used to really large home made rice balls and when going to Japan, yummy rice balls from 7-11 for a dollar. I thought paying $4-5 for a rice ball would be completely not worth. I was wrong!! The omusubis were AMAZING. The rice was good quality. And they really stuff the balls with a lot of protein. Some of our rice balls were literally spilling from the insides with meat and/or fish (which is what we wanted and loved). And even with the plentiful amount of fish or meat, it was not too salty. There isn't inside or outside seating so it's more of a togo option. You can order one or two for a nice snack or make a light meal out of it. Def going to come again and try their other options!!

Yelp
Tasty, but not quite worth the wait. I ordered a few omusibi on a busy Saturday here. The Santa Monica open street initiative was going on and the restaurant was insanely packed when I first noticed it and wanted to stop by. I decided to order online instead so I could walk around Main St and enjoy the street fair while my food was being prepared. The app (I ordered through Yelp). never updated with my order status so I had to go in after around 45 minutes if walking/waiting (originally gave me 30-60 minute estimate). I was very hungry upon finally getting the food and though it was good (love warm, fresh rice) it didn't strike me as anything too different than what I'll get from Marukai for lunch sometimes even though this was freshly made and handcrafted. I'm wondering if I just had a poor experience because of the street fair making it so busy and I'd still gladly come again.

Yelp
Made a pitstop here for a mid-afternoon snack at 4:30 ish and left much too full, but very happy which is how all snack sessions should go. The store was never quite empty, but only had about 1-2 people ordering at a time on a Saturday afternoon. They make your onigiri to order, but they don't have any tables or seating inside or out. Pricing wise, this will drop you about five dollars depending on what you order and the amount of food you get for the price is okay, but the quality is outstanding. Another quick note is that they actually have quite a few vegetarian and vegan options if anyone in your party has dietary restrictions. I tried the Ginger Pork Curry, Tokyo Tori, and Mentaiko on this visit. All of them were absolutely delicious, but the tokyo tori was definitely the winner. Sweet and savory tender pieces of chicken with fluffy rice is just the perfect comfort food. They were also quite generous with the amount of mentaiko and the curry option has thin, delicate slices of pork in a beautifully thick curry sauce that you can smell throughout the store.

Yelp
Located on Main Street's restaurant row in Santa Monica. This tiny shop offers Omusubi aka onigiri, nigirimeshi, umeboshi, onigiri uses rice formed into shapes: round, triangular, cilindrical and filled with meat, seafood, veggies and wrapped with Nori seaweed. It was my first time trying Sunny Blue's version but I have had other versions before. Ordered the spicy salmon, Taka Tuna and Miso mushroom. The later was a tad bland, while the spicy salmon and Taka tuna were flavorful. Each ball is either 1-3 bites depending on you. These were tasty but not the best, go to Japanese Village in DTLA for truly better ones. Also, these are priced higher and lacked substance and content to justify $$ The shop was super small, basically a counter to order and No seats inside. The shop did not look super clean. The staff of three were uncordial, not helpful, demeanor very unprofessional and uncool towards customers. Allegedly, their internet server was down, and payments were either cash or pay Venmo by downloading something from a staffer's phone seemed so questionable. I hate downloading menus or anything which could infect my phone. I'm privacy conscious and this was weirdly suspect. When the male cashier sensed my trepidation, conveniently the internet system began working... :/ I ordered and paid via ApplePay. There was a counter nearby, where I placed my order to take pics. That counter belongs to the next door business: Crudo Nudo who do not want their space used...Noted! Only one bench outside and a hideous green fake tacky grass, just like the negative attitude from the staff. If negative customer service can sushi roll off of you and you want to get filled with mostly rice, try the Omusubi here where Service was dismally Blue, NOT Sunny.

Yelp
I walked in seeking a bite I left with about $60 worth of the tastiest of tasties I've had since eating onigiri(I think this is what it's called/spelled) in japan. Just ask the staff to take you on a ride with their choices. Be sure to get the "special" porridge (they will know what's up. By the way, if you do the thing called Eat Right for your Blood Type(Dr D'Aadamo), this place be hella Type A+. Anywho, be sure to get your food for here vs to go as the seaweed is different(I'm sure 'to go' is still tasty) but if you can eat them in the next 10-min ask for it "here" I would have had a magnificent photo of my order we didn't start eating right away....

Yelp
Been meaning to try Sunny Blue for a while, and it definitely did not disappoint! They specialize in omusubis and have so many different varieties making it really hard to choose. I tried their miso beef and spicy salmon which were both so delicious and filling. It can get busy during the lunch rush so be prepared to wait 15-20 minutes.

Yelp
Used to be a fan of Sunny Blue and it's always my go-to place for omusubi but not anymore. Went yesterday and ever since they expanded from one to more store, the quality of the omusubi isn't great anymore. It shrank in size, rice taste a little hard and it's bland. Not the omusubi I used to have 8 years ago. Very disappointing.=(

Yelp
So glad I stumbled across this spot while at the Day of the Dog event! Ordered two omusubi: Miso beef and Kara Tuna. At first glance they looked a little small but they are LOADED with the filling. It turned out to be the perfect portion. I also tried their mango green tea which was super refreshing for the hot day and didn't have that artificial aftertaste I find a lot of mango flavored drinks tend to have. They were quick to get the food out and they were so fresh and warm which made them taste even better!

Yelp
Have passed by this place for years now and finally tried it. Rice was warm, ingredients were fresh, and it was tasty! My only complaint would be that it is a bit pricey. And my sister (who is vegetarian) observed that the veggie omusubi are the same price as the meat/fish ones, which is a bit odd.

Yelp
I try to swing by Sunny Blue to pick up some rice balls (Onigiri) when I travel through LA area. It is still as delicious as I remember. This time. We ordered a lot more than the Onigiri.

Yelp
I came here recently on a weekend, and there was a small group of people waiting outside for their orders. It took about 20 minutes but so worth it. We got the beef and chicken curry omusibi. They are filling & well worth the price of $4.95 each. The seaweed is perfectly salted and slightly crispy and they didn't skimp on the meat which I appreciated.

Yelp
This little mini store in Santa Monica is super famous for their omosube. With a cheap price and a healthy option, Sunny blue lets customers get a wide variety of options of omosube for really cheap. We got 1 miso beef, 1 curry, 1 tuna, and 1 salmon. All were super delicious, but the miso beef was really good and reminded me of gyudon you could get in Japan. The line is always super long but fast and this place is super worth it. Highly recommend anyone looking for a quick healthy bite to try this place out!

Yelp
Love. Love. Love. Great place to grab a to go lunch and eat it on the beach. Thought it was so tasty! The rice is warm & delicious! Small space so I always take it to go since its 2 blocks from the beach. This will always be my go to lunch spot in SM.

Yelp
Ever since I first came to sunny blue when they first opened years ago, I've loved it so much. To me the onigiri is so flavorful and they actually put enough filling on the inside compared to those smaller store bought ones where, to me, don't have as much filling so it's mostly just rice. Sunny Blue is a small shop so don't expect to sit down and since it's a smaller store, the line is out the door as it's also really popular now. They work pretty fast in my opinion! It's only a handful of workers so just be mindful. They're really nice and have always made my experiences easygoing which I'm glad

Yelp
My favorite rice balls in LA!! Especially the one with the plum (shisho ume) and miso mushroom! A perfect snack at the end of a bike ride or a great light lunch or dinner! Two of those make me full, I wish I could eat more every time I go there! I heard the spicy salmon and curry are also fabulous but I haven't tried due to allergy. The staff are super sweet too which makes the visit more pleasant There is no indoor seating.

Yelp
Really yummy! They were out of white rice when we went & a couple of onigiri did end up with a few really crunchy pieces of rice in them, but overall they were really good. I'd recommend ordering them to go if you want them fully wrapped.
