"This Somerville Haitian restaurant recently established a new home in Medford. They’re cooking up classic comfort dishes like lalo with fluffy white rice and a pretty big breakfast menu. Only a few spots in the city focus on morning meals, and at this one, you should dig into the mayi moulen (a cornmeal porridge) with eggs, zizye (a sautéed chicken gizzard dish), foie dure (a stewed beef liver), or flaky fish on top. For lunch, try their tasso kabrit, tender cuts of goat marinated in epis, sour orange juice, rum, scotch bonnet pepper, herbs, and spices." - Ashia Aubourg

A gem in Medford neighborhood! Serving authentic Haitian food! Highly recommended!

Google
This place deserves honorable mention, the best Haitian food in Massachusetts. The food tastes like you are eating in Haiti, very very good. Whoever is the chef deserves an appreciation. Anything they cook tastes like heaven, they know how to cook to save their lives.

Marysa Paul

Google
Nice and spicy food ( fritay), tasty rice and bean sauce( sòs pwa)

Google
Food has always been really good, but the service isn’t the greatest. I get that us Haitians can sometimes be stand-offish but service with a smile and a friendly disposition go a long way. Treat every customer whether they look Haitian or speak creole like they’re guest in your home and special. Also, the prices are a bit high now. Paid $75 bucks for three meals. Again, I’m not trying to disparage a local Haitian establishment and we truly have loved this place going back to their previous location but going above and beyond in those little things will help this place explode with business and make it a more enjoyable experience for the customer.

Never pick up the phone. On Monday I called 7 times no answer till I gave up. Today I’m trying to place an order my favorite Haitian restaurant is close so I decided to give them a chance again. [Big mistake] phone ringing no answer.

Google
They’re thieves, a lady charged me 20$ for poul peyi and it wasn’t even poul peyi. It was regular chicken and the food was terrible. I tipped her just to steal my money.

Google
I called to order breakfast for my mom and the guy who picked up the phone was extremely rude. I did not feel yelling over the phone was warranted. The guy was extremely frustrated, impatient and seemed over worked. I don’t think it’s nice to be treated like trash when I am spending my hard earned money supporting an establishment. The food is decent but customer service is key and Sunrise Cuisine needs training in handling customers.

Google
I recently used Sunrise to cater for my shower. They went above my expectations on the food. They honestly have the Best fried goat in Boston. Many of the restaurants will be cheap and serve mostly bones, but it was thick pieces of meat. 5 days later I still have people messaging me asking me about the food, but specifically the goat. You won’t be disappointed.

Yelp
The fried goat dish is so good! Portion is very generous! I will definitely come back! You can order from the counter and seat yourself. It is truly a gem in Medford neighborhood.

Yelp
Customer service is complete a*s. The food was good overall as I've been eating her for yearsssssss with my family but the customer service received this last time definitely is going to me second guess next time I want to purchase Haitian food. My online order said a total is $69 but my CC statement was charged for $83??? When I went to ask for the difference back, the lady told me all she does is put the food in the register and that's it. Before I could ask for the owner, she kept cutting me off saying "the owner isn't here. The owner isn't here". She didn't try to call for someone for help rectify the situation or anything. She then went on to pack another order while I was standing there waiting for answers then proceeded to ignore me. Again, the food is amazing as it always is but the customer service alone will ruin this restaurant.

Yelp
Great fresh Haitian cuisine! Very fresh and consistent rice beans legume and griot are my favs!

Yelp
This place has disgusting service. I came here to enjoy breakfast with my fiancé and I ordered French toast. The French toast was made with a lot of eggs and was very salty with no flavor. French toast is supposed to be sweet and savory. I brought these concerns to the manager who never checked on us while dining. The manager was extremely rude and said "Well I don't know what you want to do about this, you're the first person to say something like this". I apologized to him and suggested that maybe it was just this batch of food but that I don't feel comfortable paying for the meal when I didn't eat it. He left to get us a receipt, slammed the receipt on our table and said "That's it, final!" The receipt included the bill for my meal as well. I will never go to this restaurant again. My fiancé went to the register and asked the manager he could just pay for the food that he ate and the manager started being extremely rude to him and tried to force him to pay the full amount with a tip. I felt necessary to start recording the interaction for our safety.

Yelp
The beef Legume is good but TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!! Absolutely terrible service. I can't stress that enough. Super unprofessional. Been supporting them for years either way, but nothing changes with their horrible customer service skills.

Lucinda A.

Yelp
Ohhh Sunrise where do I begin. Let's start with when I made my entrance inside of the establishment we were greeted nicely. But the staff was on a call with a customer and her response to the customer on the line was not friendly and showed her poor customer service skills. I for one would not be talking to a customer on the phone in the manner in front of customers she should have discussed the situation in an appropriate area. As my party of five waits to be seated a party of three strolls in and just gets comfortable and sits down at this time the host is a bit dazed and confused and is hollering at the people who just walked in and saying aren't you five come and now my friend is saying no that's us. So for visual purposes we are still at the entrance and the host/ waitress is yelling for us to come have a seat. That's not the biggest deal. What really urked me is (Danielle) the waitresses poor demeanor. When she came over to finally take our order, which felt like forever she was RUDE. One friend asked for the Saturday special as opposed to her saying we ran out she nonchalantly shrugged her shoulders and said we don't have it. My other friend asked for the pricing of the fish and she said everything is on the menu BUT if you actually took a second to glance at the menu that information was not given. My other friend then asks for kenap which is beautiful displayed on the menu and she then opens her mouth to say we don't have it. So y'all just adding photos on the menu of items you don't have. COOL One friend and I order a passion fruit with milk and my other friend said I'd like the same a passion fruit and the waitress barked at her "HOW DO YOU WANT IT." I'm sorry did you not hear her say the same way as me. Overall sunrise you never fail to disappoint me with your customer service. I mentally prepare myself for the outrageous unnecessary disrespect. As a Haitian women I make it my business to support Haitian businesses but when it comes to sitting at this restaurant and enjoying the atmosphere it does get hard when the waitress is ignorant. As for the food thank God it came out great because you can't have POOR quality customer service and then serve crappy food. Food: 4 Customer Service: 2.5

Yelp
The food here is TO DIE FOR! Hands down the best Haitian cuisine in the greater Boston area. People I know drive from Lowell just to eat here. The bean sauce is perfectly seasoned and the rice is always cooked to perfection. So it really pains me to not go back here. I've worked in the food industry so I know that sometimes people have off days so I kept going back cause the food really is that good, but I have issues every single time. I'm not sure why it keeps happening, if I keep catching them at a bad time, but the stress of ordering from there isn't worth it anymore. This is just my personal experience so I do encourage everyone to try it at least once, because like I mentioned the food is authentic and delicious.

Lia M.

Yelp
I still love Sunrise for Haitian cuisine. I have always had friendly service (whether I'm with Haitians or on my own) and the food has always been good. Today, I ordered the griot platter, which I had not ordered before. The griot was crisp and tasty, which means the accompanying pork fat was tender. The pikliz had a nice bit of heat and as usual, the plantains and rice & beans were good. Also, it appears they now have pâté, but were out at the time I was there. Hopefully, they will have it next time.

Schneider V.

Yelp
Food is good but dude who takes the calls whenever they answer is really a piece of work. He answers the phone extra aggressively and rude, makes you not want to call and order the food anymore and this has been my position countless of times. Literally will call and he'll pick up and I lose all appetite, I'm pretty sure he's a cool person but just customers service(voice) is not good at all.

Sherley C.

Yelp
STAY AWAY!! THEY CHARGE CUSTOMERS EXTRA AND POCKET PEOPLES MONEY!!! Every Sunday I order their fried fish, and every Sunday it comes to the price of $16. So today around 7pm I called Sunrise and asked them how much is a fried fish and the lady over the phone responded $20 and i said okay thank you and that I will call later on. Around 8pm I called and asked for fried fish and the lady on the phone said $30? I'm like $30? She said "yes $30." So I asked her how come every Sunday I go there I get charged $16 for fish and I called earlier the person said $20 and all of a sudden now it's $30? $10 price increase within 1 hour. So I politely asked her to speak to the manager and she said call back in half an hour. I asked her how would I call back in 30 mins if you guys close in 30 mins, and all of a sudden she replies back saying that the manager isn't there for the night. I took it upon myself to drive there to call speak to a manager and she said the manager isn't there. So I asked her how much is the fish she said $30. So I said $30? She said yes. So I asked her for a menu and no where on the menu do they have listed $30 fish and I told her that. Her response was oh we have $40,$50 fishes too... when no where on the menu do they have $40,$50 fishes on there ... like come on, if they needed tip all they had to do was ask, but nope they just charge customers what they feel like charging!! Here's there menu as proof !!!

Amanda B.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious and portion sizes were ridiculous!!! We ordered the fried pork, chicken wings, and fried red snapper. Everything was phenomenal, but the snapper was something else. Highly recommend.

Sherlande A.

Yelp
Placed a catering order recently and everything was perfect, portion size was generous for the price. Extremely satisfied!

Alicia W.

Yelp
Terrible Service. No one greeted us when we walked in and we had to ask multiple times before we were even told to just pick our own seats. Like they didn't even acknowledge that there were people in front of them trying to spend money. There were like 2 other families there so it there wan't anything else drawing their attention. We should have just walked out then, but my mom was starving and we were already inside. The waitress didn't even know what was on the menu and had to keep checking before telling us half the food wasn't available. Mediocre food and disappeared waitress later, we were never even brought a check and had to ask at the front how to freaking pay. Once again being ignored the first few times we asked. My mother was a waitress and this is the first time we have ever not tipped. It was just that awful. Zero stars if I could, just go up the street to Style Cafe.

Kween M.

Yelp
The food was good !!!! what ever that sauce is that goes on the rice is bomb!!!!!!!!!!!

Lisa R.

Yelp
Best Haitian food period, most authentic. I wish they were on Uber eats! Super delicious

Jay K.

Yelp
Got the fried goat and it was over cooked, some pieces so much so that I couldn't eat them, sad to waste them. Some pieces were ok, I ate everything I could. The plantains were good, they do them flat and crunchy which I like. Side salad was small and included some grungy looking tomato slices I couldn't hang with. Despite the less than awesome first experience, I'd like to go back and explore other parts of the menu for some reason. Loved hearing everyone speak a different language (French I think? Or Creole?). They do breakfast, which might be nice to try next.

Ana V.

Yelp
Cons: The service is slow. The staff does not follow up to see if the diners are well situated. Not the friendliest reception. Christian music blasts all day long, on loop. You would think the Christian music would reflect their demeanor. It doesn't! Poor audio from TV speakers. Pros:The food is really good. Decent portions. Plenty of on street parking. This place is not worth my time!

Yelp
One of the best places to get Haitian food in Somerville. The family that owns this place are very accommodating and pleasant. They catered for my teachers wedding and did a superb job. I love to order the fish fried or sautéed, black rice, plantains, black bean sauce, legume my my my....so good. I'm salivating as I type this. For a beverage I love to have coconut soda. I would eat here or take out both are fine. The service is great...if you want something I particular sometimes they may not have what you want so it's best before you drive there just an FYI. I have been disappointed in the past but there are some great alternatives and all their food is good. They are NEVER a disappointment when it comes to their food being fresh and yummy. This cuisine is probably one of the most underrated ones out there. Haitian food is a mix of history culture and survival. When it hits the tummy everything in life is good.

Amanda M.

Yelp
Good Haitian food. Looks like it's been there for a while and does good take out business from what I saw during lunch time when I ate in. Food was ready quickly. Fun secret spot near Assembly if you're in the neighborhood and want something different.

Beckster B.

Yelp
I got this for lunch it must have been freshly cooked and out of the stove. It was soo good. Different Haitian restaurants have their specialty for Sunrise its definitely the sauce pois noir. I took my lunch back with me to eat at work and all of my co-workers were jealous of my lunch and walking in and asking what smells so good. I took leftovers home and it was still the bomb. I ordered sauce pois noir with chicken au sauce.

Antoinette T.

Yelp
The food may be good but the service is awful! Every single time I've come to this establishment the workers are RUDE. I didn't bother asking for the manager because he was just as rude!!! The reason why i choose to come to Sunrise instead of Highland Cuisine is because its right off 93. Ill rather drive 5 minutes to Highland Cuisine instead of give my money to Sunrise. One star giving because of bad service. Go to HIGHLAND CUISINE instead its right off McGrath Highway which is less than 5 minutes away. They'll atlases treat you with respect.

Pasta T.

Yelp
Smdh ... The food is good, plenty of parking and fair prices, but the cashier today was particularly bad. She immediately challenged me about the only dish I order take out for the past 2 yrs (Diri Kole avec Legume #nomeat), she forgot my change, she forgot I said no meat took the food in the back fast *probably to spit in it* ... I'm gonna pray. She dropped the money, sucked up to the white girls & let them cut me before finishing up my transaction. Listen, I recommend ordering your food over the phone ahead of time or wait until the evening when the male family members of the business are working the register they know how to run their business.

Lucinda C.

Yelp
Great food!! No complains!! Everything was good, from mango smoothie to even the salad!!

Connie W.

Yelp
The food is very good BUT the ladies who answer the phone are very rude!! You ask questions and they keep saying one minute. One minute then u hear them talking to customers.... Then they put u on hold and then your disconnected!! I called back and they did the same thing!!! NOT GOOD FOR YOUR BUSINESS!! NEED MANNERS... IT GOES A LONG WAY!!!

Romy V.

Yelp
The best Haitian food in Somerville. I'm in love with their fried fish, legume (spinach/mixed veggies with meat), white rice and bean sauce. IT'S TO DIE FOR!!! The service is okay, but the food is great. Highly recommend!!

Ariana M.

Yelp
If there was an option for 0 stars I would choose that, but unfortunately there isn't. I first ordered my food.. Which was the basic, chicken with sauce with rice and beans...over the phone and waited 20 minutes before walking in to pick it up. No one even acknowledged my presence, causing me to basically flag the girl at the front desk down. However, she noticed every other Haitian that walked in and cut right in front of me. The girl asked me what I ordered, and looked confused after I told her. I soon figured out that no one had even sent my order to the kitchen. She then told someone else in the kitchen what I wanted, and told me to wait. I waited for another couple minutes, which I thought was rather quick for chicken to be cooked, paid, and left excited to eat my food. What happened after that was something close to a nightmare. I took a few bites of the chicken without really looking at it, and got an AWFUL taste in my mouth. It was a mixture of blood and uncooked meat. And that is exactly what I saw when I finally looked down. The meat was bright purple and bloody. After uncontrollably gagging, I some how kept it together and did not actually vomit. After showing my co-workers this horrific piece of chicken, I poked at it a little more and found a piece of plastic mixed in the rice. Just when i thought it couldn't get any worse, it did. The next stop was the trash can. Rude, incompetent service. Bright purple mystery meat, and bland over cooked rice and beans. Just thinking of this experience makes me want to die all over again.. But I had to share with this with others and hopefully save a life or two from some type of food born illness.

leslie w.

Yelp
I hate to do this, but I was really appalled at the level of service I received. I walked in and was told to seat myself, then no one came to take my order. Everyone who worked there went into the kitchen for ages and I sat there while a small child ran around the restaurant harassing all the customers. In fact, there was only one person eating and everyone else was just lounging around. I couldn't tell if they were there to eat or not. After about 10 minutes I got up to leave (of course no one stopped me--they were all in the kitchen!) I ended up getting Indian food elsewhere.

Shay T.

Yelp
I really truly want to give Sunrise more stars but my heart won't let me. The food is a hit or miss. It's either really great or just straight up crappy. The and the customer service is HORRIBLE. Only 3 people actually have the God-given sense to treat people with respect. All the others are just rude. This one girl actually rolls her eyes at people. Like for real shorty? You'll place your order and show up 20 minutes later to pick it up only to have to wait another 10-5 minutes for it! The prices are a tad bit expensive especially considering their competitor is not too far away and have better prices. Basically everything Sunrise does wrong Highland Cuisine does right!

Kevin V.

Yelp
Food is great. Got the tasso cabrit (fried goat). Staff is super unfriendly. Angry looking and never have anything on the menu except for a handful of classics. Wish this place has better ambiance. But if you're looking for creole food, this is the spot

Stanley F.

Yelp
There is no point of calling in for your food. It will not be ready, but the cuisine is wonderful. I wish they move a bit faster.

Alison D.

Yelp
This place was delicious! I felt like i visited someone's home and they wanted to make sure i ate right. The portions are very generous, the flavor is incredible! Even for a delicate white palate like mine, the only thing that was a bit of a spicy surprise was the coleslaw (watch out!) i recommend this to anyone looking for a faster sit down meal.

Bernado J.

Yelp
They have no customer services, I feel like I'm putting my money in the trash when they are talking to me.. They need to give formation to ladies at the front..

Amoura B.

Yelp
The service was horrible...I went for breakfast they didnt have multiple things that were on the menu they were rude n the place was dirty...ill never go there...ever!

Kayla M.

Yelp
Went in today to have lunch with my friend. I was a little hesitant because I had bad service here before. I should have listened to my instinct and never returned. I ended up ordering the fried beef. Along with my friend. There was another gentleman (Caucasian) in the restaurant as well. The middle aged woman took our food orders and walked away. I was going to order a drink as well but didn't even get the chance too. She brought out our salads, and we ended up waiting another 5 additional minutes for waters. I'm not much of a salad person so my friend finished mine. So after a long wait our entrees came out but wait .. with no rice or sauce. The Caucasian male ended up getting his full entire meal in one whole run. Did I forget to say that he arrived after my friend and I. I was appalled. She ended up bringing me rice that I did not order, and then had the nerve to get a attitude when I asked in creole for the correct rice that I ordered. The meal was mediocre. I wanted the more green plantain not the sweet ones and I got a attitude when I asked for the ones I wanted. Long story short I am a big tipper and I tip for service. The woman is going to run business away sunrise.

Rachel A.

Yelp
The food was mediocre-my sister got the fried pork and it was not seasoned, no salt. My dad's food was lukewarm. The service was my biggest issue, our waitress had little customer service skills. The staff are not professional at all. Mostly will never eat-in here again.

Sergey M.

Yelp
Everything my mouth touched crackled with great flavor , fish was fried and tasty , soup was the best

Vlad B.

Yelp
Great food, well portioned, well presented. Not expensive at all. Fast, quality survive. Good place for group outings or one on one diners.

Arthor U.

Yelp
My girlfriend recommended this dinner because she was there with one of her girlfriends picking up food and she thought it a nice place to try. The food looked and smelt good. While trying to order several of the menu choices she wanted were not available. She finally managed to order the chicken (foul) with sauce dish, rice and beans, salad and something to drink. For her the chicken was very dry and had a lot of bones! I ordered the goat with sauce, rice and beans and salad. I enjoyed my meal. My girlfriend tried a piece of goat and liked that. So maybe the next time we go there she'll get the meal I ordered. The server was very nice and the atmosphere was relaxing. Personally I'd go back and maybe bring my friend who is Haitian and get their opinion. I can't speak for my girlfriend.

Alex M.

Yelp
This place is right next to the Dunkin near Assembly square. Good food, decent atmosphere. They've got a couple TVs going during lunch, and the staff is all very nice. The fried meatballs are awesome, and although you can't really mess them up, I'd recommend the fried plantains. The price is reasonable, and they do take out as well. I've been several times, and I'd recommend it if you're in the area.

Chris M.

Yelp
The service was slow. I went through several iterations of trying to order items from the menu because most of the items on it were missing. It came down to the point in which I had to ask them what they actually had so I could order from there. I also tried to order a soda but they (both waitresses) didn't know how much it cost so I gave up and got a drink next door. I'm surprised that these guys are still in business.

Kelly W.

Yelp
Best Haitian cuisine in Boston! There stewed snapper is life. & not to mention the sweet plantains

sam c.

Yelp
I have only eaten in there a couple of times, but I get take out from there once a month or so. It has always been a great experience. I always get the same chicken, rice and beans, but it also comes with plantains, salad, sauce, and a dry spicy cole slaw for about $9 and I get 3 meals out of it! they are accommodating with special requests and have always been polite and friendly. I'm a fan!

Gary Y.

Yelp
I was driving by and decided to go in on a whim. I am really happy I did. Great food (chicken/pork/goat)! Will definitely be back just for the bean sauce. Service is a little slow but the people are super nice.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
the food here is very good, ever better if you like things very spicy, the service is friendly, but communication can be difficult and don't expect a quick bite to eat

Ruth C.

Yelp
I really hate going to sunrise cuisine. THey never have most of the items on their menu. The owners are very rude (especially the really big guy). The food is very gross.

Alex W.

Yelp
AWESOME food, awlays comes nice and warm, you get your moneys worth! I always drive to go there for some Haitian Food, griot is my absolute favorite, just wish they gave a little more beef, but still good!

Willy E.

Yelp
I frequently go to Sunrise, and the food is good, however it would help if the waitstaff were a bit more on the friendly side. I recently went to a wedding they catered, they did a fantastic job. Keep it up guys.
