"In the mood for tequila or mezcal? Head to Sunset Cantina. The Mexican restaurant and cocktail bar in the Outer Sunset is an excellent spot to enjoy agave spirits in many forms, including frozen margaritas and Jell-O shots. They’re serving their drinks to go along with things like tacos, flautas, tostadas, and other snacks. For outdoor seating, find a spot on their parklet, or ask for a seat on their back patio." - Lani Conway

"Sunset Cafe is a Mexican restaurant and bar right in the heart of BU’s campus (to the extent that BU has a campus). It’s right across Comm Ave from Agganis Arena, making it an ideal spot for pregaming hockey and basketball games, especially since it has a lot of margaritas and a menu bar Tex-Mex that works for that type of thing. We wouldn’t really recommend it for any other situation, though." - Dan Secatore

Oct 2024: Not bad overall. I enjoyed the dips—they grew on me—but the guacamole with warm chips was pretty good. The shrimp had great flavor, though the rice could have used more depth and seasoning.

🌞 **Sunset Cantina Review** 🌮🍹 **Location & Vibe:** Tucked away on Commonwealth Ave, Sunset Cantina promises an experience that's vibrant with a casual, sports-bar atmosphere. Known for its history as a gathering spot for BU students, my boyfriend and I ventured there hoping to relive some fond memories of nacho-filled evenings. The ambiance is laid-back, perfect for a lively game night. 🏈🍻 **Drinks:** The bar at Sunset Cantina remains its stronghold. With a robust selection of cocktails and beers, the drinks are crafted to kickstart any gathering. We found the cocktails to be particularly well-mixed, adding a refreshing twist to our afternoon. 🍸✨ **Starters - Chips & Queso Dip:** Our meal started on a shaky note with the chips, which were unfortunately stale, detracting from the overall enjoyment. However, the queso dip provided a slight redemption with its intriguing mix of grilled corn salsa and a dash of tajin, offering a zesty flavor that partially made up for the lackluster chips. 🌽🧀 Rating: 4/10 **Main Attraction - Beef Empanadas:** The highlight of our dining experience came in the form of their beef empanadas. Filled with tender, slow-cooked shredded beef and creamy Monterey Jack cheese, these empanadas were flavorful and cooked to a delightful finish, standing out as the most memorable dish of our visit. 🥟🌟 Rating: 7/10 **Salads - A Healthy Twist:** We sampled the Mexican Caesar and steak & avocado salads, aiming for something on the lighter side. While both salads were generous in portion, featuring a decent amount of meat, they lacked a certain flair and were generally average, failing to impress beyond their wholesome presentation. 🥗🥑 Rating: 5/10 **Birria Tacos - A Missed Opportunity:** As a fan of birria tacos, I was eager to dive into this dish, but it fell short of expectations. The tacos lacked the rich, deep flavor typical of birria, and the meat was scant, leading to an unbalanced bite where the taco shell overshadowed the filling. 🌮👎 Rating: 4/10 **Overall Experience:** While the drinks lived up to the festive spirit of the place, the food struggled to match up, delivering a mixed bag of hits and misses. The setting and price point make it a reasonable choice for casual dining, especially if you're in the area to watch a sports event and enjoy some drinks. **Final Scores:** - **Food:** 5/10 - **Affordability:** 7/10 - **Ambiance:** 5/10 Hoping my feedback is seen as constructive. I love capturing and sharing food experiences and always root for places to thrive. 📸💖 If you're looking to watch a sports game with a good drink this might still be your spot!

I went to get a drink at a peaceful place. They were not serving drinks in the bar area. Instead they wanted me to drink standing at a club area. The bar could not hear me and was very mean and rude. So I went to grab drinks at a quieter place. One of the worst places to hangout. It's a waste of money, time and deal with an attitude. I have hosted few social gatherings there but pretty pathetic. They do not even deserve one star rating.

Can someone PLEASE TELL ME WHAT A KITCHEN APPRECIATION FEE IS? What a joke! Guess who’s not coming back to this establishment because of that? Me! Guess who’s telling the locals and friends and family not to support this business over that? ME!

If it's crowded expect to wait a long time for your food. My food actually came out before my drinks did. I was told the bar was backed up but when I looked there was no one there. My waiter was new which I held space for but she was little forgetful and would forget to. Ome back to our table. Again she was new and it was her first day not in training. She was super nice and sweet.

It was so loud to hear my friends voices but the service was really good and the food was nice and cheap.

I had the single greatest time of my life. My glorious 7 foot tall husband took me back here (the place we met) to propose. The entire restaurant went crazy and the rest of the night was a dream. Much love to fibonacci who served our table and rachel who kept the shots coming 😁😁😁.

Sunset Cantina used to be great, but there are some service and food issues. The food, when properly prepared is still very good. The burger I ordered medium rare looked rare or raw.

Yelp
This place has the best nachos. The service was excellent. Shoutout to Alejandro. This guy was the best. He was so nice and accommodating for our big group. He was a super personable and had a great energy.

Yelp
A cross between a sports bar and a Mexican restaurant. We were headed to Agganis Arena for a concert and chose this. I thought it was smart that they were partly playing music of the group playing at the arena across the street. Our waitress was both knowledgeable and friendly. We ordered a margarita and a Guinness Dip Trio Burrito Bowl with Chicken Birria Tacos Churros for dessert Everything was awesome. Their Braised beef tacos with consommé was absolutely ridiculously good. This is definitely on my list to revisit next time we come to Boston University!!! Since I am a college hockey fan it will definitely happen.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch and it was not a good experience. First there was no server. The bartender tried to help us while the server was MIA. He took our order and tried to help after we waited for over 15 minutes for the server who eventually surfaced without explanation. She never came to our table while the bartender helped us and his own customers at the bar. Thank God he was somewhat helpful. We did not enjoy our food. As for the ambiance the music was so loud and the decor was busy. I felt like I wasted my money.

Yelp
Stopped by before the BU hockey game- conveniently located across the street from Agganis Arena. Lot's of seating indoors plus a large bar and outside patio. I enjoyed a house margarita and chips and salsa which were good but not amazing. The birria quesadilla was very good and filling. I would order again. The service was friendly and efficient. I noticed the menu advised that 20% gratuity may be added to parties of 6 or more- there were several large parties. That's pretty standard. I was surprised to find 20% gratuity added to my check- for a party of 1. I almost missed it because it was unexpected. I tried to ask about it but they got very busy right as I was leaving. I sent an email asking what the standard is so I can update my review. I usually tip at least 20%- the way it was added made it an effort to calculate additional tip (no subtotal without tip). Update: the restaurant got back to me via email and apologized for the error- they had not intended to apply automatic gratuities for a party of 1. They offered a refund of the gratuity and a complimentary appetizer on my next visit. I intended to leave at least 20% gratuity so I won't request a refund or the appetizer- I just wanted to understand the policy and know what to expect on my next visit. I appreciated their response and apology.

Yelp
I was here recently for an event. They had the event in a separated space, with a DJ and lots of lights, which definitely created a festive mood. There was food too, but I didn't try it since I had already eaten. I had a cup of horchata (sweet rice drink) that was tasty though! My boyfriend liked the spicy shrimp. We got a ticket as a part of the event, so I decided to try the margarita- which the bartender mixed in a cocktail shaker to order and put a lime wedge on top of. I can see people getting pitchers of this for a night of dancing- on that night there was a lot of bachata and some reggaeton playing. On another occasion I might try their michelada (which I was psyched to see on the menu)- it's like a Mexican version of a Bloody Mary, using beer as a base alcohol. Loved the basketball shooting game option. I like having other fun options at a bar.

Kristin C.

Yelp
The ambiance when entering is very nice but as you move to the sides (right) it's sort of an odd setup with a very wide space. We are seated at the very back table and they began setting up for music or some sort of performance, not sure what... anyhow that causes for a decent amount of commotion. Just found out it was for the male stripper at 8pm you must be kidding Service: SERVER himself was very friendly. Service overall needs work. Drinks; just sodas, took longer than one would appreciate and before the food even came I requested boxes. Our server was very kind. I highly doubt he can control how SLOW the food comes out. We each got very basic entrees, nothing that should have taken so long. The food was good, nothing memorable. If you eat here, ask to sit up front because the back feels like where they send castoffs. & male strippers apparently. ADDED a star because the owner was so professional in addressing my review. Much appreciated!

Yelp
Used to come here a lot when I went to BU. it was definitely the spot to get good nachos after a game, concert, or class. For one of my friend's 21st birthdays, we came here and even stayed until last call. He was so happy! Over the years, it looks like Sunset has changed, both in physical space (I forgot how long ago, but they expanded a little bit to the right of the bar) and in menu. I remember coming here and laughing about how the nacho toppings were not evenly spaced out (the toppings would be dumped all over the chips and the bottom chips didn't have any toppings). Oddly enough, that was kind of the beauty of Sunset. The most recent time I went was after a BU hockey game this month. My friends and I were really excited to visit our alma mater and feel all the nostalgia. When we got there, it was decently crowded but we were seated right away. We ordered nachos which came out quickly, but they were much smaller than the serving we were used to. The nachos were alright (not bad but not fantastic). I was even excited to share a drink with my friend; however, their blender was broken and she was not able to order a frozen margarita. That was kind of a double bummer. I think I would give Sunset one last shot because of the nostalgia factor... but I'm worried that I might be disappointed again.

Neeka P.

Yelp
The nachos were good, but I feel like last time I got them they were better. Also the service is not great which is why I gave the three stars. I feel like the nachos have gone a bit downhill but it may have been since it was lunchtime, they were still yummy just not as good as I remember.

Kimberly K.

Yelp
I wish they would just totally rebrand this place. It's the only spot like it close to Agganis for pre games or concerts so it should make a killing but the food got lousy and they nearly never have the beer you ask for and bottled beer is never cold. They've changed hands multiple times but the upkeep of the place is pretty gross. Nothing seems clean - avoid the bathrooms if you can. As far as the food, it's better under the latest management, but still not great. On our latest visit the buffalo wings we ordered had no flavor (or seemingly, sauce), the quesadilla was pretty floppy and not fully cooked and the nachos just aren't what they use to be in its hay day. They could use a big overhaul in general. It's too bad cuz I want to love this place and have a good spot to go before and after hockey games. This just isn't it anymore.

Yelp
I love Sunset Cantina! The food and drinks are delicious and the service from the bartenders is top-notch! If you stop in, please let Sam know that you saw my review.

Gennie L.

Yelp
I absolutely love sunset cantina. The food and drinks are amazing, and reasonably priced. We ordered house nachos, shrimp tacos, chicken wings, and pina coladas. The portion size for the house nachos are extremely generous. The shrimp tacos are delicious. They are different from regular shrimp tacos, which are usually fried. The tacos comes with a side of beans and Mexican rice. Students get 15% off food and it is a popular spot during the school year. Service was excellent and our server, Alfonso, was super nice! Sunset cantina is perfect for any day of the week and any occasion! Overall rating: 9/10

Miya H.

Yelp
Had an awesome time at this Mexican joint! Shoutout to our waiter, Sam, who made the meal even better with his laid-back and friendly personality and attentiveness. The food was great and the margs were sooo yummy. If you're into great Mexican food and a chill vibe, this place is a win!

S S.

Yelp
We had a great bartender, very on top of everything and made nice drinks, food is very tasty but I would probably just do take out.... they have the same sneaky practice as the Painted Burro and slip in a kitchen tax and do not let you know, they just throw it on the bill. I'm not a fan of restaurants that partake in that practice, so again, we will do take out from here on out.

Ian O.

Yelp
Great time with friends and delicious food. Juan was great! Especially the nachos were a good time.

Dorothy Y.

Yelp
3.5* A neighborhoody spot that I can tolerate but not recommend. Came here because it was close to my friend's place. We were half hr late to our booking so it was automatically cancelled. Good thing they could fit us (look it was only 6pm). After getting seated, there were serious service issues. It took a long time for someone to give us cups, water, and ask to take our order. Same for at the end when we wanted to get the check. Foodwise, only the tacos were good. Everything else was mediocre. We got: fish tacos, al pastor tacos, pulled pork tacos, steak chimichurri, garlic wings, side of veggies and curly fries The tacos all had a good portion of meats and veggies to balance things out. Some tacos got soggy and broke near the end. If I ever come again I'll probably only order the tacos. The server didn't ask us if we wanted flour or corn tortilla but it came with flour, okay. Their menu says the tacos come with sides like guac, pico de gallo, and salsa but somehow I feel like they didn't give it for all three tacos we ordered (don't tell me they consolidated it into one occurrence each) Steak chimichurri The description is way more exciting than the actual dish. It came out on a sizzling hot plate but that just made it dry out easily. Also the steak came out in 5ish sad pieces and minimal veggies. Whether they include bone or cut thinner or use different cut of meat or increase the price, I'd rather they have more pieces of meat. There wasn't much chimichurri sauce and it wasn't that outstanding either. The veggies below if were thin and wimpy none of us wanted to eat it. Side of veggies Don't ask me why we pretended to be healthy. The veggies were not appealing. Curly fries They didn't have guac as a side (but had enough to give for the tacos?) so we changed our mind last minute to curly. It was indeed curly but soggy. Garlic wings They had different flavors but we just chose the not spicy one. It was weird how we had to look at a different part of the menu for flavor options because the wings under appetizers only said "sauce of your choice" It wasn't garlicky enough and the actual chicken meat wasn't juicy nor flavorful. It wasn't stale but not exactly fresh either. Forgot if the dipping sauce was straight up mayo or something but it tasted like something close to that - didn't help the flavor situation. I would still be open to coming to this if I wanted to spend a LONG time to hang with friends but the food and service had too many major flaws for me to give it 4*

Paola A.

Yelp
I'm usually not crazy about Mexican, but I loved this. My server recommended the Birria Tacos, and they were chock full of crispy, tender, and delicious beef, with a smoldering dip on the side. Yum! Service was quick and polite. Ambience: it's a Mexican restaurant, so the music is very loud and the walls are covered in cultural doodads. Interestingly, most of the music and doodads was American? But i liked the antique signs! Very cool.

C R.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times for different events ... they water down their top shelf liquor in the actual bottles. They add on automatic gratuity and even charge a "kitchen" fee as well. Many other customers have experienced this. One has reported to the city.

William W.

Yelp
great service from kc, makes killer drinks. foods really good too, get chips and salsa w your drink

Debbie

Yelp
The food was delicious but the bartender was useless. She was pleasant but very green! What's up with the kitchen happiness fee! Never heard of this. Unfortunately will not be returning anytime soon!

Brent P.

Yelp
Unreal food and service. Nachos were fire and the bartenders were attentive. Great spot to go before a BU game!

Barbara J.

Yelp
Love this place! The drinks are amazing (thank you, Sam!) and the nachos are the best. Any time I'm in the area, I have to stop in for a margarita or an island breeze!

Melanie R.

Yelp
The food was not memorable at all. I came here for a brunch event and they had stopped serving brunch items at a certain time which was odd and not on the flyer that there was a cut off time. Was given a different menu and half of the items weren't in stock so we had to go for a different food item which was gross. Drinks were very watered down. Ambiance was alright and the music was good. I would probably come back just for the ambiance alone but the food and service needs a lot of work.

Grace F.

Yelp
Juan is so so nice, best service ever. The margaritas are made so well and the nachos are amazing!! I will be a regular for sure!!

Sophie W.

Yelp
THIS IS THE BEST PLACE HANDS DOWN FOR MARGARITAS, NACHOS, AND GOOD MUSIC!! It genuinely has better aux than any club I've ever been to and the nachos are to die for. The staff are so nice and friendly, and it gets so much fun when the lights dim! 10/10 would recommend

Diego G.

Yelp
MY GODDD!!!! Went out to Sunset on a Taco Tuesday and let me just say, what an amazing time I had. Service was amazing, their bartenders wore a smile the whole time, that's when you know you walked into a great spot. the manager Brendan was very friendly and made sure everything was to perfection. DJs set the vibes correctly, Silvia and Fiona were very kind from the second I walked in to the second I left. THOSE TACOS BY THE WAY!!! An absolute steal and bargain for the amount of flavor that they pack. Rest assure I will be back and highly recommend this place to all college kids and surrounding neighbors in the area. Should be proud to have a place like this in your neighborhood.

Brian S.

Yelp
I used to come here when I was in college, circa 2011, and it was fine for a college bar. The time have changed! Solid food menu (chicken tortilla soup and Birria tacos were BOMB). Thursday night had a solid DJ and cool dance spot. Plus Thursday night football and hockey on the TVs. Huge plus. Bartenders were attentive and chill. And the bar is huge. No need to get a seat if you'd rather stand or chill at the bar. Highly recommended and I will be coming back.

Andrew C.

Yelp
New management really ruined what this place used to be; a great dive with copious yummy bar food (killer nachos, huge beer list). None of that anymore! Small plate, and it doesn't taste good. This place is trying to be a fancy upscale dive (I guess?) which obviously doesn't work. Nachos is 16 bucks for about 8 chips covered in cheese. Lol tf? Seriously? Chips don't even cost why would you ever skimp on chips?? Rice/beans taste canned. Good luck. Good waiter though. One star for that fella!

Christina A.

Yelp
I checked out Sunset Cantina in Boston for dinner the other night. This spot is located on the BU campus and actually has a decent amount of parking close by, which is always a plus for Boston. We started with some margs (which weren't the best but were okay). Then we got the nachos which were delicious. Our guac was also good, though the portion was a little small. The carne asada was super delicious as well. Overall a good experience.

Michael H.

Yelp
Sunset Cantina has their groove back. The service is exceptional. The staff is in such a good mood and they walk around singing. The food is delicious. Drinks are impeccable. I had an amazing time and I highly recommend the Sunset Cantina. Be sure to make a reservation if you can. The atmosphere is festive and casual and comfortable.

Lobama G.

Yelp
Great food, great drinks and awesome vibes. I loved the birra tacos and the salsa music they had playing!

Nando H.

Yelp
We came in on a Wednesday evening and to our surprise they had some lovely live music going on. The dining space is large with plenty of seats. We arrived and were sat immediately. The menu wasn't overwhelming, plenty of familiar options. Our food came out in a timely manner. Our party definitely enjoyed our food. We got a variety of entrees. Quesadillas, burritos, tacos, and everything was hitting. Service was attentive and I believe the manager, Alysha, stopped by to check on us. Great experience. Would be back

Matt B.

Yelp
Great margaritas and rocking live music. Really solid food backed by stellar staff. We'll be back!

Trisha B.

Yelp
Honestly, I've been coming here for 10 years and it always hits!! Nachos and margs are the best. Also has a great beer list. You won't be disappointed!

Jacqueline B.

Yelp
Had the best nachos and house marghs here before BU hockey game. Juan our server took such awesome care of us and chatted with us all night! Had a total blast. Great steak nacho's and atmosphere

Justin H.

Yelp
Haven't been in years. Not the place it once was. Stopped by. Was told we have nothing in draft. It was lunch so asked for an iced tea. They didn't have that. Went with water. Ordered fajitas. After 30 minutes was told they weren't out in the system so I got up and left. Probably needs to close and reopen with new ownership and management.

Isaac S.

Yelp
Both the food and the margs were to die for! The bartender named Samantha was so friendly and took amazing care of us!

Anya B.

Yelp
Sam is amazing. Super friendly and kind, and very interesting convos. Also, the nachos are great.

John T.

Yelp
Good food big portion size. The service took a long time. Great place for a big party to go a eat

Scarlent C.

Yelp
sunset cantinas food is amazing. friendly bartenders and servers ! Sam was amazing and Andre's was super helpful!!

Ally M.

Yelp
Sunset is so much more than a BU spot! All of their food is good but we would always get the nachos and it's hard to order much more than that as they're huge and a full meal in itself. Definitely get them with the pulled pork added. Their margaritas are also very good, especially the mango. The lines can get pretty crazy here but it's definitely worth the wait!

Lawrence K.

Yelp
This place is an absolute disaster. We were a party of six. We were there for 2hrs. We ordered drinks, and an appetizer as well as our dinner. Drinks came 20 mins later. So we ordered a second round to be safe. 10 mins later our appetizer and some of our dinners come out. But the person delivering our food brought it to every table along the way to see if it was there's. Now was ask about the rest of the meals and she just walks away. Then our server comes back to inform us the drink will ba a few more minutes. So we ask when do you think everyone's dinner will come out and can we have some silverware. Another 10 mins the rest of the food comes out and the next round of drinks. Hiwever two of them were Coronas and they are out of them now. So we switch it to Modelo. We eat dinner, sub-par at best. We beg for our two drinks and the check. 20 mins later we get the check but no Modelos. Our bill as items we never ordered. To many of items we did and this s@&t show of a restaurant as the nerve to put a Kitchen surcharge fee on the check.. I am telling you there are hundreds of places to go in Boston. Do not go there. Taco Bell would be a better choice.

Sharon H.

Yelp
I really want to love Sunset Cantina for everything that it is and love that it is so central around the BU campus when I'm visiting friends here. But I just can't get over how dry their protein (especially chicken) is every time I come here!! I find myself downing water every time I take a bite out of their chicken and it always gets caught in my throat!! For that reason, I would stray away from their chicken tacos and chicken add ons. But I love how big their full nachos are (legitimately bigger than two of my heads) - they are stacked like a mountain and I'm all for it. They also have great deals where depending on their rotating weekday special, is half price. I think their margaritas are great and super strong which is always a plus. I just don't think there's anything overly exciting about this place, aside from being in a great location for a Buncha thirst college kids. The only time I'd come here is if I'm craving something that's on their half off days (ie. half off burgers or nachos on their specific days). I think there's a lot of better Mexican food in boston proper so wouldn't come out of my way to dine in here unless it was a last resort. But I appreciate sunset cantina and am sure most of the BU students do as well!

Yelp
This business just reopened under new management and there are some games that diminish the experience. My first time in the bar they presented me with a drink menu. I ordered my drink and one dollar was missing from my change. I questioned the bartender and it was verified that the wrong price had been programmed into the point-of-sale software. They politely corrected the matter. However, at 10 o'clock, they programmed in an automatic 20 percent gratuity on every round of drinks. Last night, I returned and discovered that they are again playing this game with the pricing. This appears to be a violation of the state happy-hour law.

Nadia D.

Yelp
Place was great! Destiny, one of the bartenders, is AMAZING. Love her. So personable and fun!

Xx E.

Yelp
Greta bar awsome staff Sylvia made my night and drink thank you aswell Manger Brendan the dj name dj eli an diego was Phenomenal for taco tuesday wasn't expecting a crowd that they had deff will be coming back soon. I give this place 10 out of 10 thumbs up

Alek B.

Yelp
My BU alum partner took me and some friends here two weeks back, raving about the nachos -- which were the whole reason we came. Sadly, our whole table felt sorry when all that arrived was about 10 chips with topping. We all felt the $16 price was a total rip off. Here's a plea to the restaurant managers to bring back at least moderate portion sizes for the nachos and give your customers both an explanation and an apology.

Yelp
If you are looking for the place that is on every list for having "the best nachos and best margaritas in Boston" then look no farther...that place is gone. It sadly went out of business and was taken over by a new owner, new chef and new bartender. So despite going by the same name, keeping the same setup and claiming that certain things are "the same as before" that would be nearly impossible with a new staff. If you are familiar with their old nachos and margaritas then you will be able to tell that they are not the same. The new sunset cantina is good but I can think of other places with better nachos, margaritas and more options for food. That is not the fault of the new owner or anyone. The old place went out of business and I wish the new owner the best of luck. I went back after they reopened hoping for the award winning nachos and margaritas and I was let down and will not be returning.

Yelp
**This review is during the COVID-19 guidelines for indoor dining. Came here for the first time with some friends for some nachos and drinks on a Thursday night. Food: 4/5 We ordered the Full nachos with steak, chicken enchiladas, and curly fries--we didn't expect such large portions! The nachos had a good assortment of toppings and the chips weren't too soggy, but there wasn't much flavor besides salt. The enchiladas were actually pretty good, but I would've liked more chicken. The curly fries were average, but also a bit salty for my taste. Overall, the food is pretty meh but addicting when ~not entirely sober~. Drinks: 3/5 I wanted something light and refreshing, so i ordered a skinny lime margarita ($9), and it was honestly underwhelming. The drink was very watered down (probably because it was a lighter version of their regular margarita) and the lime flavor tasted like cleaning spray. Next time, I think I'd order a cocktail or something. Atmosphere: 3.5/5 I'd have to come here on a Friday night or weekend to get the full experience, but coming here on a weeknight at 10PM was not it. The ambience wasn't lively at all. We came too close to closing time and felt rushed to finish our food. If I come here again I'll update my review. Service: 4/5 Pretty standard, but we did get checked on often since it was close to closing time.
