Yelp
The first time I came across Supannee was at a large scale Yelp event where they had samples of their food in small portions. I was blown away at the beauty of the presentation of their foods, as well as how good it actually tasted as well! I knew I would have to come to dine in at some point to give the rest of their menu a shot.
- PARKING -
Quite a small lot, and very cramped spaces too. There's a few street spots along the side of the road if you're unable to snag a spot!
- SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT -
Decently sized interior, with a section on the left hand side reserved for larger party reservations. The rest of the seating varied from 2-6 person tables. We had a group of 8, but they managed to push two tables together to allow us to sit together. We arrived at different times, so it was hard to plan out what we wanted to share and what entrees we all wanted to get - our server hurried us along, but with good intentions as she knew the large party reservation would soon arrive and wanted to ensure our food would get to us prior, which was sweet and nice of her to do. Food came out fairly quick, and at the end they even helped us pack our leftovers to go.
- FOOD -
Tom Yum Chicken (cup - $6.99): The soup was much redder than we expected, but luckily it wasn't as spicy as we thought! Pretty good Tom Yum, although I was looking for a bit more savoryness to it.
Summer Rolls (2pc - $9.99): Gorgeously wrapped summer rolls, and had fresh vegetables inside of it. Their house peanut sauce was delicious, and the sweet and sour plum sauce was a unique offering! I do think the price is high for the amount of food you get, but we couldn't help but order it for the beauty of the rolls.
Somtum (Green Papaya Salad - $9.99): Again, great fresh vegetables featured in this dish, but I did feel like the actual Papaya Salad portion size was small for the price..
Garlic Chicken Wings (5pc - $8.99): Usually you can't go wrong with Chicken Wings, but unfortunately I think it missed the mark here. The chicken was a bit dry, and the outside wasn't necessarily crispy. The sweet and sour sauce definitely saved the chicken.
Pork Belly Larb ($14.99): I love Larb, and so when I saw they had a Larb option with Pork Belly, I was immediately intrigued. Think chunks of crispy pork belly, tossed in the flavoring of what a larb salad usually has. It was good to try at least once, but I wouldn't get it again.
Nam Kao Tod ($14.99): A favorite of mine, and maybe it's because I've only ever had it at one other place which prepares this dish differently, but the crispy rice bits here were soaked in the sauce that it became uncrispy. I may have gotten unlucky with my scoops but I never got a crunchy bit.
Pad See Ew (Tofu - $13.99): A classic and general favorite. I thought the flavoring was great on this, and it was a fair portion size! Lots of Tofu bits and chinese broccoli as well.
Pad Thai Crab ($20.99): Pad Thai is also a fan favorite, but add some crab on top and it sounds a good amount more appetizing. Unfortunately I don't think it was worth the extra cost as I didn't think it added much flavor to the dish. The Pad Thai itself also seemed to be missing some depth of flavor - it really only tasted sweet. Another friend at the table ordered a regular Pad Thai and they had the same thoughts without me saying it first, so it was consistently off.
3 Flavor Fish ($22.99): My boyfriend wanted to try something new, and this item caught his eye. The crispy fish was crispy... as long as it wasn't sitting in the juices of the pineapple and other ingredients. Sadly only a small bit of the fish was sticking out of the sauce, and the rest of the filet was soggy.
- OVERALL -
I do think Supannee is unrivaled when it comes to presentation and making dishes look aesthetically pleasing, but I can't lie and say I wasn't disappointed with the food dining in. Most of the dishes were OK, some a bit off from what I'm usually used to in terms of other Thai restaurants, but I think at the price point I was hoping to be wow'ed a bit more than just first looks. I do think the establishment is run well and maybe I just had a few bites that weren't indicative of the quality... but I'm still unsure if I would come back after having tried the dishes this time around.
