12 Best Taco Stops in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Consistently one of the most highly-rated taquerias in Durham is Super Taqueria. The menu is filled with popular options like suadero, pollo asado, and chicken tinga, as well as cabeza, lengua, and tripe. The uber-popular carnitas are a particular standout. Like many other taquerias the fillings can also be enjoyed as burritos, quesadillas, and more, and the chile relleno has garnered many a social media mention." - Matt Lardie

Google
Great place for authentic Mexican fare. I ordered the beef tongue burrito, asked how big it was... was told "not so big" so also ordered a taco - turns out the burrito was fairly large. In the picture I am only showing 1/2 of it. I was still full at dinner time. Both were full of flavor and the condiment bar was well stocked to spice it up any way you want. Will be back! 13/10

Google
Service at this place is incredible. We had a party of 6 and all had our food within 15 minutes on a busy Sunday night! All the staff is very nice and the food was incredible. The Cuban torta was amazing and I found definitely reccomend it, as well as all the tacos. The tortillas are homemade and taste awesome. Very budget friendly as well.

Google

Google
My husband and I love to come to this place, he gets his Chicharrón preparado sans cueritos. I always get tongue tacos and beans. They never disappoint, the flavor is identical ( or pretty close to authentic Mexican made stuff) I love to come here and prices are reasonable. Me encanta!

Google
Definitely the best breakfast burrito I've ever eaten. Maybe the messiest burrito I've ever eaten. And possibly even my favorite burrito I've ever eaten. I got the chorizo and eggs burrito. The chips they gave me were stale but the burrito was so good I didn't really care. I wanted breakfast and they modified a normal burrito to add eggs to it really easily. The place was dead so they cooked it super fresh right then, and it was totally delicious.

Google
I ordered chicken enchiladas and my husband ordered 2 steak and 2 beef tongue tacos. We waited almost 40 minutes for the food. It was so disappointing. The food had no flavor. I had to throw salt on my food and I normally don't do that. I don't know if they changed cooks but I will certainly think twice before going there again.

Yooo legit some of the best tacos in Durham and they got good prices... and leftovers hit hard... pics of some takeout I got while inwas there 😋 was too busy smashing tacos to take pics 🤣

Google
Great food, awesome value and very clean. Two large Chili Rellanos, perfect rice and beans, small salad and five corn tortillas for $8. So much food I just had the leftovers for lunch. Rolled Chicken Tacos (largest I’ve ever seen) combo plate for $8. We’re still eating them today. Update: finally got a chance to return a couple days ago and this time we brought our granddaughter. I got the same Chile Rellano combination plate, now $10, and we shared that along with an order of rice and beans. Still couldn’t finish it all. We got there a little early for lunch and had to place to ourselves. When we left the place was packed. Ample parking behind the building or the parking lot right next-door.

Yelp
The food is great, service good, the ambiance was good, the food was smelling very good when I entered the restaurant.

Yelp
We got a recommendation to come to this place since it is "authentic" and inexpensive. Came for dinner on a Saturday and ordered at the counter after perusing their menu posted on a digital sign. There are no prices listed but we ordered a carne asada plate, tostada cameron, and two horchatas. My Spanish is not great but I was able communicate with the clerk, pay by credit card, and take a numbered sign to our table. Note: there was no option to add a tip on the credit card charge so we put a few dollars in the tip jar. Food came out relatively fast and was good, filling and inexpensive (two of us ate for under $25). They also have a station with salsas and some sides like pico de gallo and vegetables. We don't come to this part of Durham very often but will definitely consider coming back.

Yelp
Tacos are always full of meat which is better than other places that barely fill them. So far each of my visits have been great! Great to sit down and eat or order to go. Service is great. Highly recommend their guava drink!!

Yelp
Awesome, authentic Mexican food. The carne asada burrito is *chef's kiss*. Love this place.

Yelp
I've been waiting quite a while to stop by "Super Taqueria" for my taco fix but it was not a good experience for me. I stopped in for a bite a bit after dinner and ordered 3-tacos. When I sat down and took a glimpse at my receipt, they charged me for 4-tacos. I brushed it off because it wasn't worth the fuss. Holy cow -- it took forever to receive my 4-tacos. There was only one other customer in front of me. It took almost 15-20 minutes for my food. The tacos were okay, it was a bit bland to be honest. I couldn't even finish it. I also ordered a medium mango frescas and it tasted like diluted coolay. Overall, not sure if I would go back. It was a negative experience overall.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican restaurant... Really good tacos Pollo asado, al pastor. Salsa bar really good. Very basic inside.

Yelp
Came in for an early lunch and the food was fresh. The menu is broken down into categories but you'll also have particular items highlighted available that day. I'm pretty impressed with the tripe burrito Tripe can easily be a hit or miss if it's not cooked right. The chicken and the chorizo was well seasoned and the toppings were a plus. There is way more to try so I'll be back for tortas and their soups. I forgot to mention, really affordable! I spent $20 for two.

Nathan T.

Yelp
The pastor is very flavorful, but the carne asada is quite bland. Overall the food was good though. The speed of service was great. I would go again. Their esquitte was delicious.
google avatar

Tammy H.

Yelp
They have great horchatas! I got the taco al pastor, which was good. There's plenty of socially distanced seating outside. Street parking is easy to find. Overall, a solid choice for tacos, and an excellent one for horchatas!

Yelp
Such a yummy little hole in the wall! I stopped in with some friends on a Saturday for an early lunch. These fast-casual style places are always my favorite- I feel like they're efficient, economical, and there's something for everyone. There's a parking lot around the back of the building, and plenty of seating. I tried the horchata and some tacos. The horchata was delicious, and I had a friend rave about the strawberry fresca as well, so I'd definitely try another flavor drink in the future. My tacos were brisket and chicken. Very generous meat portions! And the brisket was my favorite- next time I would get all of those! They have a salsa bar with many options, including cilantro and some pickles veggies. Everyone I was with loved their meals. Many of us ordered tacos, one for a burrito, and one the enchiladas. I'd definitely stop back in for this delicious and affordable food!

Yelp
So so happy we finally tried this place!! And really all you need to know about what to order here is their CHILE RELLENOS!! My goodness gracious. They are breaded perfectly, oozing with amazing cheesy goodness, I couldn't stop eating them! So if this is your go-to Mexican dish, this is definitely the best place in Durham for chile rellenos in my opinion! Their beans and rice are also pretty solid and their side of chips and guac is a actually a very large side of guacamole which I always love seeing! Their tacos were also a big hit--the carne asada was our favorite, and the chorizo we got on the quesadilla (slightly different style of quesadilla compared to the larger tortilla styles) was also pretty great! The one let down for us was their gordita which was fine (we got lamb in ours) but the gordita itself just wasn't as flavorful as others we have had in the area. But their red and green salsas poured on anything also made my meal! And we got this tamarind drink that was quite refreshing too since they were out of horchata which we've been told they are experts at making one of the best in Durham. So will definitely be back and will get more of those magical chile rellenos!

Rafael M.

Yelp
After my meal today I was convinced I needed to write a review! This place is super good! Nice to see the name actually match the food. I've been here a couple times and have only ordered tacos. They make legit Mexican style tacos. No frills, nothing fancy, just delicious tacos with all the required fixings. Cilantro, onions and lime. But today I de used to deviate from the tacos and ordered the Fajita Tejana. Amazing! It's a mix a steak, chicken and shrimp grilled fajita style with a side of rice, beans and guacamole!!! It's a great value but even better flavor! I was super impressed by this plate. I'm definitely making a trip back to this place soon!

Yelp
I have been to this place a few time and i like it, food is good and affordable, i live in Raleigh and sometimes i drive all the way to Durham to eat some Mexican food. The aguas frescas are really good.
google avatar

Tonia C.

Yelp
The food here was really good. The bar for toppings is a nice touch. Their tacos are $2 each, you choose the protein. The serving sizes are just right. I saw many plates going to tables with what looked like delicious meals. I, however, was getting my food to go so I left with 6 tacos, 3 asada and 3 pollo asada I would come back but for takeout only because the inside is not that clean for my taste. They do have a sanitation score of 98 though. That's why I decided to move forward with my order.
google avatar

Matthew K.

Yelp
I brought two new colleagues to Super Tac today. As per usual, they loved it and were amazed at the value. Six tacos for just over 6 bucks. Okay, you order 3 tacos, but since they use two tortillas per taco and enough meat to separate each taco into a pair...it might as well be six... then hit the toppings bar to top them off. Today I had lamb, brisket, and beef short rib. And if that sentence doesn't move you, I just don't know you anymore.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
Again, my expectations were too high because I'd been told they have the "best tacos" in Durham. I liked the place but they surely aren't the best tacos. They have a huge variety of proteins but NO vegetarian options. I ordered the chicken taco which I thought was dry and tasteless. The salsa bar made that taco and I still didn't finish it. They only have refried beans which aren't my favorite but they were flavorful. Their chips are thick and not quite salty enough for my taste. They do offer authenticate bottle Cokes with real sugar - small or large. That's always a win for me. Great prices! Friendly people work there.

Yelp
Love this place. Very authentic food. Fresh and delicious. Very good service. Wide variety of food.
google avatar

Ashley W.

Yelp
Very authentic Mexican food with a wide variety of meats. Unfortunately the power went out several times for a short duration during our visit, but the staff came around collected our receipts and did there best to get what they could out as quickly as they could. The empanadas and tacos were delicious. They also have a nice salsa bar. Will definitely be back for more tacos!
google avatar

Nora L.

Yelp
This place is awesome, the food is fresh, authentic and the prices are unbeatable! My husband loves the menudo, big bowl for 8$ (red chili soup with meat from the cow's tummy) my daughter and I like the quesadillas and gorditas. The carne asada quesadilla is huge made on a gigantic corn tortilla over filled with meat& cheese topped with sour cream and lettuce for 4$. The gorditas are equally delicious, it's like a thick corn tortilla but stuffed with beans, meat of choice, lettuce fresh cheese and it's crunchy exterior, also 4$. If you are ever in that area do yourself a favor and stop and visit this place, they are fast and food is delicious!

Yelp
My first of the taco explorations on Roxboro Road and boy was it delicious! We stopped in about thirty minutes prior to closing and ordered a handful of tacos: asada (beef), chorizo and pollo (chicken). Honestly, I'm not going to lie, but the ordering process was a little intimidating for an English only speaker. The menu is on the wall as well as on paper, but there are lots of options and not much translation. Tacos were served up quick on two corn tortillas with a bar of toppings available. I love the pico, tons of cilantro and two types of salsas, hot and mild. And black label Valentina on each table. My tastebuds have been tweaked, the asada was hands-down knockout, although the chorizo was delicious as well. I can't wait to return for more of that mouthwatering flavor.

Broc B.

Yelp
Good food, plenty of variety. More expensive than out West, but everything in NC seems to be that way. Burritos are tasty and filling. The Chile Relleno plate is good and the serving size is enough for one very large meal or two medium sized meals so a great deal for the price. I just wish the food here was actually spicy. :)

Yelp
As my wife and I have been trying to find our authentic spots since we're originally from SoCal, this place was great! Good variety of jugos, nice tender carne tacos, and great salsas. Also great prices!

Yelp
All the following judgements are based on my experience and own opinion. Locations: In the middle of nowhere. It is close to a mexican grocery store. I have to say, if you do not look for this place intently, it maybe hard for you to realize that such a hidden gem exist in this neighborhood. Parking: Really confusing to me. Do be misguided by the vacant space behind the restaurant, because it is said that "IT IS PRIVATE" and "TOWING ENFORCED" without stating which property it belongs to. I guess it's a risk to park in this area. I instead just park on the road and pray that nothing will happen. Service: nice, friendly Food: ATTENTION: THIS IS THE BEST PLACE FOR TACO, SOPE! I fall in love with their sopes. Taco is also well balanced, even though I am not a fan of taco, I still eat 3 tacos! And they have salsa place for you to choose two spice sauce (green and red), two vegetable choices, and something else I did not remember. And it is free to refill those sauces. Sanitation: It is really clean and I saw their staffs voluntarily clean up the whole areas multiple times during my stay. I appreciate it! Plus: they have open kitchen so you basically can see their cooking process. Overall: It is a six star rating. The king of taco, and sope. And the price is cheap too. I will come back, I promise!

Yelp
I absolutely love these tacos and this place. Mexican food is sometimes tough to evaluate because the ingredients are so similar at lots of different places, but I think the ingredients are what sets Super Taqueria apart. They have great quality, flavorful meats and they keep it fresh - you can only get carnitas on Saturdays and Sundays. The salsa is fantastic and you can get as much as you want. You can tell the tortillas are special and they're actually enjoyable to eat. They don't skimp on portions, you can't beat the prices, the restaurant itself is simple but welcoming, and I dream of their horchata daily. They now have a TV screen menu. Haven't tried any of the plates yet but I'm literally getting ready to go there for dinner as I type this, so maybe tonight is the night. Oh, and flan. They have flan and giant slices of cake. I could eat here every day.
google avatar

Liliana O.

Yelp
Tacos are ok, no handmade tortillas though. I ordered a ceviche tostada and it wasn't good at all, tasteless. My husband ordered menudo and it was way too greasy and smelly . Won't be coming back here.
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Been having a hard time finding good mexican food since moving out from California... this is as good as it gets. Soooooo tasty. Quesadillas are a little smaller from what I'm used to but amazingly good. Try the chorizo... Wet burritos are bigger than the regular burritos. Tacos dorados.... not what I was anticipating... taquitos. Tortas are gigantic!!
google avatar

Yelp
My GoD I live in Miami and spent some time in Durham last week. The BEST tacos have had period. Don't change a thing keep up the good work!

Yelp
Food: 3.5 Service: 4.5 Value: 4.5 Friendly service as well as cheap prices make this a great option in Durham. Tacos were okay, but overall it was a great value stopping in here.

Israel L.

Yelp
One of the best taco places in Durham. It's cheap, it's really good and service is quick. We got 6 tacos, 2 giant agua frescas, a coke, and a huge piece of tres leches cake for less than $20. It's inexpensive for a reason: it's not catering to the "white people" aesthetic. The menu is not translated to English and the orders are called out in Spanish. This is a place for Latinos, so if you want trendy decor with an English menu of typical Tex-Mex, go elsewhere. If you want to eat great tacos while watching soccer and listening to bachata, this is your joint. Some tips: when you walk in check out the agua Fresca flavors first - they are in the giant white buckets with a label in front of each flavor that day. Then go to the cashier and the menu is on the wall, order your food (and I highly recommend the agua Fresca). After you pay go get the agua Fresca and show the person your receipt. They will call out your order number in Spanish.

Yelp
So I was invited to get some tacos w a friend of mine, and he suggested this place. It is about 2 miles from my house. I was of the minority walking into this restaurant, but with the support of my friend and the pleasant cashier I was able to get the guidance I needed to place my order. I ended up with 3 tacos. I ordered a carnita taco, chorizo, and broadened my horizons w/ cow tongue in my third taco. Everything was really good! The chorizo was def my fav! I also ordered flan which was delicious! The tacos were priced right and very flavorful! I must say that I found the bullet holes in the front windows of the restaurant a little unsettling, but I'm willing to take my chances and return again for some amazing food! Keep up the great work!

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. I finally got off my butt and went with a friend. We went just to try the tacos. Tacos are 1.50 a piece. We each ordered three, but two were more than enough! As reviewers have noted, your options for taco fillings include the standard chicken, pork, and beef. There is one taco that was described to us as an assortment of meats. I passed on that, but my friend got it and said it was wonderful. My favorite was the chicken tinga tacos. The salsa bar is pretty straight forward, but really, how many options do you need? I put salsa verde on everything, and it was great. Additionally, the other customers who were in there were super friendly. Everyone was pretty much talking and saying hi to everyone else - including us. The table over from us seemed excited we were there and said we would enjoy our tacos. They also helped us identify when our meal was ready. When you order, you get a number. Numbers are called out in spanish. We were a bit slow on the uptake. The family next to us helped make sure we got up when our numbers were called, and we all got a laugh out of our difficulty to count beyond 10 in spanish fluently. Just a nice experience all around.

Yelp
With La Superior mere minutes north of Super Taqueria and Guanajuato mere minutes south of it, I don't really understand why anyone would rather eat at Super Taqueria. I've been three times because despite the staleness of the salsa bar, the clearly not homemade tortillas and the abundance of greasiness that engulfs all the meats, I keep having friends who say I should give it another try. No thanks. I'll just been hunkering down to a plate of chuletas or tacos dorados or some gorditas a few miles north at La Superior.
google avatar

Jarrod S.

Yelp
Food: 4.5 Ambiance: 2.5 Food/Price: 5.0 Walking up to Super Taqueria on a pristine stretch of Roxboro fills one with the warm nostalgia of discharged 9mms, oily chop shops, and clandestinely quaint amphetamine based transactions. But if you can get past all the heart warmy feels you will be more than pleasantly surprised by this authentic Mexican gem. Tacos is all I've eaten here so I can only speak to their superior quality, but to give you an idea of how good the chorizo, asada, and assortment of sauces are some context helps. Within four hours of eating these mouth-watering meat pockets an all out digestive assault was launched on both my upper and lower intestines, a rosy experience that only gets better when you consider the average Scoville rating of their offerings. And this happened not just the first, second, or third visit. I actually endured this peristaltic barbarism four times before finally developing some sort of flora immunity. But oh was it worth it, bullet proof bowels in tow Super Taqueria is now part of my regular line up. Bottom Line: The best tacos in the triangle and possibly the cheapest. *Note* About 50% of people who eat there notice this same trend, the other 50% seem to possess an inherent immunity.
google avatar

Dan T.

Yelp
Only slightly super, not muy grande super. Just your s average Mexican fare...kind of thought the table was dirty. Nice staff. Satisfying meal, but not super
google avatar

Invisa W.

Yelp
It was alright. Not the best tacos I've ever had nor the best tacos that I've had in Durham. They're good and have a good selection of meats for you to taste, but their execution leaves you wanting. They really need to have an easier way to put your add-ons on the tacos. They didn't even ask me if I wanted lettuce and tomatoes or pico de Gallo. I know that traditional tacos usually have just onions and cilantro but they didn't even ask me if I wanted that. The meats were good but the carne asada wasn't nearly as grilled as it could have been. Typically when I eat a carne asada taco it tastes like someone grilled a steak and cut it up in my taco. Their carne asada tasted like a slightly higher grade version of the taco Bell or chipotle version of steak meat. If you can't stand the americanized tacos, this is definitely miles better than Chipotle (or E.coltle as I like to call them) and the restaurant is an okay spot for an outing. Their deserts are really good. Tho I wonder if they make them in house. Either way they're very good.
google avatar

Ian Maren C.

Yelp
During a hospital visit this week, i've eaten at both La Superior and Super Taqueria...it's a close one but I think this one takes it. Much more authentic feel, portions are sizeable and meats are soft and juicy.
google avatar

Preston A.

Yelp
Best tacos I've had around the triangle so far for an incredible price! Four tacos and a drink for $8! The tacos themselves are cooked perfectly with the meat being perfectly seasoned and not needing anything to be enjoyable. But to make it better you can add a variety of toppings or salsas from the salsa bar. Well cooked well seasoned and well prepared the taco trifecta ! Update: I also experienced the terrible GI issues about 10 hour after consumption but it was worth it and I'm fine conditioning my gut to that bacteria so long as the tacos keep coming out amazing.
google avatar

Amber M.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch because of Google reviews. Menu is in Spanish and I'm a Maine native, so ordered a chicken burrito Majado. More good than a reasonable person can eat in one sitting for $7.49. Probably waited 4 minutes for my food and there is an impressive salsa bar if you want to customize. It all looked fresh and had great flavor. I would definitely return!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
I often get the craving for Mexican food, and to me this place is as good as you can get, especially for the price! The food here is very authentic and tacos are $1.50! They have a variety of styles of meat, I have not sampled all of them, but I really like the chorizo and the asada. They have plenty of other options here, like quesadillas, burritos, tamales and tortas. I also love the tortas! They are very large and I can easily make two meals out of one torta. One of my other favorite things to order here is one of the fresh juices, my favorite is the pineapple, but they have several varieties to choose from. Don't miss the salsa bar, they have two types as well as other toppings to add to your meal. This place is easy to miss when driving down Roxboro Street, look for a yellow sign out front, it kind of looks like a hole in the wall but the food is definitely worth stopping in for. You can easily get lunch or dinner for $5-$10 including a drink. The place is clean and the service is fast and friendly! Highly recommended!

Mark P.

Yelp
Wow! I had desayuno and Carol Ann had a burrito al aside and both were delicious. Two jarritos, lime and guava completed the meal.
google avatar

Alison S.

Yelp
I'm just here for that salsa bar! ... And everything else. It is super affordable, and we get a TON of food for far less than nearly anywhere else! Their tacos and burritos are incredible and you can get any kind of meat you can dream of in them. Back to their salsa bar! If you like spicy, super authentic stuff (not your average "Mexican restaurant salsa") seriously, STOCK UP.
google avatar

Kilbert P.

Yelp
Most original taqueria in Durham. Excellent service. Super cheap. Very clean. Quick service and very extensive menu. Will be coming back

Nina G.

Yelp
The employees were friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious and well priced, definitely recommend.
google avatar

Jeremy W.

Yelp
Everything about super is authentic, from the delicious food to the Spanish only menu. It looks rough, but it's one of Durham's hidden gems.

Heather T.

Yelp
This is one of those amazing hole in the wall places. All the food is fantastic and so cheap, too.
google avatar

Bubbah M.

Yelp
Nice Clean restaurant, glass on open grill so you can actually see your food being prepared! Sanitation grade is a strong 98! Very affordable and authentic Mexican Food!

Dave D.

Yelp
I.like this place a lot probably because it's literally a two minute walk from my house and its got good mexican food at a good.price. I usually get an asada burrito and three tacos which honestly will feed two people. The different hot sauces are nice and I like that they have a nice flat.screen installed. Sometimes there is some fat or bad pieces of meat but not often. Also they really load up the rice and beans on burritos. Overall for the price you can't go.wrong unless your too picky and need ambient lighting and your too.spoiled to enjoy the simple things.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Three of us dined in this nice little place today. You can see into the kitchen and watch your food being prepared to order, on the spot. The Toungue and Cabeza Tacos are excellent. There is a salsa bar with a variety of things to add to your food. The burritos are first-class. Get in here and try this place. It is great!

Yelp
In need of a Mexican fix we headed to North Durham to "The old Los Comales" but of course there was a line out the door. Not wanting to wait we headed up the road to Super Taqueria. I immediately regretted this move due to their limited taco selection. I like the "dirty meats", especially the cheek, tongue, and head. ST only does the normal chicken, pork, beef, and sausage. I settled on an asada taco to at least give them a try and also ordered a chiles rellenos. The taco was small but for $1.50 it seemed right and I piled it high with pico de gallo and green sauce. The salsa bar isn't mind blowing but they have the basics. The chiles rellenos was only $5 for the platter and it was ok. The beans were good but everything else was very average. My husband ordered a bowl of the menudo and a chorizo taco. He loved the chorizo and stated it wasn't greasy at all and delicious. As for the menudo it lacked the hominy he likes and it was very boney, way more than normal, but the broth was good. We washed it all down with a jumbo horchata for $2. I would say this place does a good job with tacos if you aren't the adventurous type but everything else is average. The prices are some of the lowest I have seen in the area. If you are willing to spend a little more head over to Guanajuato Restaurant of Durham down the road because it blows this place away and they have ALL the dirty meats.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is a 5. I do not think the English language has a word to describe how agonizingly slow this place is. It's not like they are creating beef Wellington. Fuqua take this place on a project.
