Where to Enjoy a Glass of Chardonnay This Summer in the Tampa Area | Eater

"When it comes to creative comfort food, few places in Tampa Bay do it better than this Westchase restaurant. A popular spot for live music, Mother’s boasts dishes that remind you of what mom would make, from meatloaf flatbread to Atlantic crab dip. Those from New York will delight in its Buffalo-inspired beef on weck sandwich, made with a coffee-rubbed prime rib, as well as the traditional Stinger sandwich. There’s nothing better to have alongside them than a glass of Harken Chardonnay, which cuts through the sauce’s spice with precision." - Matthew Meltzer

Google
Great restaurant with a Awesome atmosphere. Gio was a great waiter and the kitchen staff cooked the crab legs perfectly. Drove from Palm Harbor to try this place and will be back to try other items on the menu.

This is a return place for sure! Great servers friendly environment. The quantity you get for tacos is worth what you're going to spend here. Drinks are also exceptional!

Google
With a name like that you’d think fresh & tasty. Well, what a disappointment. Food was heavy, bland, grossly rich, & just ugly, but at least the server was nice (although you clear a table who’s left most of their food untouched & don’t ask about it?). It was a ghost town when we went & now we know why. It’s sad really. Great location. Terrible execution of the menu. I mean, how do you mess up basic tacos? The egg rolls sounded like a good bar food style idea, but the texture of the chicken inside was like dry canned tuna paste. In fact, there was a note of fishiness. Aside from the egg rolls, none of the food was hot. Maybe the only thing worth it here is the AYCE options but not something we eat so won’t be returning. Feels like at one point maybe this place was really good with cool Sunday Funday vibes every day but has probably gone downhill over time. It felt neglected. On a positive note, ginger ale was delicious & they have a nice outdoor patio with TVs & there’s an arcade game room situation next door that you can access from inside with a hospitable bartender.

Google
Went on a Friday night to listen to their live entertainment. We ordered 4 tacos: steak taco, jerk chicken, fish and shrimp with fries and plantains. Sent back chicken taco because it was cold, the rest were some of the worst tacos I have had. Nice portions so if they had executed these, they could have been some of the best.. Unfortunately the food was very underwhelming... no wonder they weren't busy on a Friday night. The server was great though even considering they only had one for the entire dining area. Sadly, I won't be returning.

Google
I was on the hunt for Taco Tuesday but stumbled upon the mouthwatering delight of Fajita Wednesday instead! I almost kept this hidden gem a secret because if everyone discovered the amazing BOGO fajitas, I’d never find a table again. But let me tell you, the patio is an experience in itself! Don't miss out on this place. You won't leave hungry.

Google
Had dinner here to celebrate a nephew's graduation. The place had great energy and food for plenty of folks to enjoy (kids and adults alike). It was a Thursday, so I took advantage of Taco Thursday, but the others in the group enjoyed the crab legs. A couple folks had dietary concerns and the staff were able to accommodate their needs easily. Seats outside and inside, so choose based on the weather and your preferences. They do take reservations, which is handy if your party is rather large and don't want to wait.

Google
This was my first time enjoying this establishment. I arrived around 4 pm, as happy hour started already at 3 pm. The menu was already at the table to choose from for happy hour to express getting faster service . The service was quick to get drinks in as you take a minute to choose what you want . I thoroughly was impressed from beginning to end with the food, service, and atmosphere of this restaurant. They also had live music that started around 5 pm or there after. My friends recommended this place and I'm glad I did come. I am looking forward to returning very soon. Try for yourself, you won't be disappointed!!!

Google
We've always enjoyed the all you can eat. Servers bringing more as you start to run out, and given the price it's incredible. I just shared the restaurant with friends because we love this place so much! Great food and atmosphere and endless crab and shrimp how can you go wrong? We will be back with friends soon for sure.

Yelp
This place is a WestChase staple. My wife and I go here many times on Thursday nights (for the taco specials). It features a small bar and has a friendly wait staff. The prices are very reasonable and the food portions are good, too. They have salads, California tacos, and sandwiches. You want to get the buffalo chicken egg rolls. They are amazing. The taco bliss consists of pretty much anything you'd expect from a California-themed restaurant - surf 'n turf tacos, cheeseburger tacos, filet mignon tacos, Southwest chicken tacos, etc.

Yelp
This place has proximity in its favor and that's about it. We live around the corner and have given Surf Shack three chances. 1st we got their tacos, they have a good taco Thursday deal, but they were bland. Chalked it up to a good deal, whatever. 2nd time, got their buffalo egg rolls & anything else was unremarkable. Third time we opted to try a bunch of apps - buffalo egg rolls, nachos with chicken & chips and queso. Presentation is excellent, everything is served hot, it all looks very nice. But the cheese was almost definitely Tostitos Salsa Con Queso. The color and artificial flavor and spice were so spot on. The egg rolls had a great crunch & the ranch was great, but the chicken tasted canned, the buffalo sauce was definitely franks hot wing sauce & there was really nothing else to them. Nachos had very little chicken, probably the equivalent to one chicken thigh (that my husband thinks was also canned chicken), jalapeños & a hearty drizzle of sour cream. Not good. Lots of people were eating the crab legs. However, i have a hard time imagining that compared to other, more coastal, locations & the quality of other items in the menu that they really any good. Overall we gave a lot of chances, hoping to be converted, but aside from its proximity to where we live, it is not something we would have chosen more than once & we won't choose it again.

Yelp
The service was great! The server was putting food and drinks on our table without us ever having to ask. The crab legs and warm shrimp were amazing. Crab leg shells snapped nicely and the shrimp were very tasty. We even loved the fries, and the chowder was great (I was dipping my fries in it). Highly recommend, We'll be back again soon.

Yelp
Taco Thursday is awesome. I posted the menu, where most tacos are around $3. And margaritas were $6 all day. This was a fantastic deal. I got three tacos and a margarita for around $22 including tax and tip. Future Christina, do not get the filet. It was over seasoned and overcooked. On the other hand, the Tuna Poke and the Shrimp (the non spicy one, not the Bang Bang) were absolutely delicious. I got them all on lettuce and they were huge. I was filled by the time I was done. The classic margarita was ok. Next time, I think I'll see if there's any flavored ones. At 12:30 p.m. on a Thursday it wasn't busy at all. You can sit inside and outside. Even though it is summer, they had fans blowing so it was actually enjoyable (it also had just rained, which helped). Service was fast and friendly. I will definitely come back for more tacos.

Yelp
Best tacos in the area Great service and nice atmosphere Highly recommend Taco Tuesday for the 2 and 3 dollar tacos. Very well made and tasty Will definitely go back for more

Yelp
Very nice restaurant and the waitress was on point! Coming from Maryland we were surprised by the amount of sides they offered on the AUCE crab legs special. They bring out your first tray with your sides, 2 sections of crab legs and a soft pretzel. The crab legs were good but some were hard to get the meat out of there. The restaurant is pretty casual and has an outside seating area. They only bring 2 sections if crab legs and a time rather than a full tray for the table. The waitress was really quick though but it wasn't crowded when we arrived at 430. Definitely give them a try!

Yelp
I can't believe I JUST found out about this place!!!! It can be a bit far out depending on where you're coming from. However, come out on a day they have a special and your trip will be well worth it. I specifically came out on a Thursday, which is when they offer 1/2 priced tacos. No limits or exclusions! They are more Tex-Mex style tacos with the flour tortillas, but they are very delicious and so filling. They have specials almost every day, but I'm a taco person and for some tacos, definitely worth the trip. The place as a whole gives me beach vibes. It feels like the restaurant belongs next to the beach. However, me and my coworkers went here for lunch and it was pretty empty which meant we got seated and tended to pretty quick. We started off with an order of nachos with ground beef. Pretty good seasoned beef and fresh ingredients. Lettuce crisp, cheese melted, pico de Gallo salsa was fresh. A variety of tacos were ordered on this day. Tacos were far from skimpy for being 1/2 off. Lots of good quality ingredients and all the proteins were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Banging shrimp, had avocado, fried shrimp, and a delicious sauce drizzzled. Filet mignon had great quality chunks of steak with onion straws sprinkled on it. The surf and turf was the shrimp and filet mignon with onion straws. The west coast chicken taco had a huge chicken strip with pickles, lettuce, and a sauce drizzled on top. Average per taco on Thursday is between 2.50-3.50. Not bad at all!!! I mentioned they do a food special almost everyday. Also, they had $3 Coronas on Thursday. This place is a must visit for lunch, brunch, dinner, or some drinks with friends or a pro sport viewing

Yelp
I came yesterday with a group of 13 for my daughter and husband's birthday lunch and it was amazing. The all you can eat crab legs and shrimp are totally worth it. I just wished whatever we had left on our plate we could of taken with use but with the all you can eat you may not take anything back with you which was fine as we still had an amazing time. Staff were great and food was hot and ready to eat. I will definitely be coming back to have those crab legs!
google avatar

Michele N.

Yelp
If you love crabs, you gotta go to Surf Shack in Westchase! It is $55, includes all you can eat crab, peel & eat shrimp, and two sides (which you can change up too). The crab legs came out hot & were super easy to open! The majority of the legs came out in whole pieces, that makes me extra happy! The service was exceptional, our waitress was asking us before we asked her for more crab! We will be back!

Jane M.

Yelp
Got their crab legs with the boiled shrimp. SO good!!! The crab legs cracked perfectly, the shrimp was tasty. Service was good - the waiter was very nice and helpful.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
Taco Thursdays with $3 Coronas and $6 Margs, need I say more? Tacos are heavily discounted but the taste is premium still! Food was on point, drinks stayed topped off! Our waiter was superb, I swear every time I was thinking I needed something, he just appeared and was ready to assist, never had to wait!! They also do all you can eat crab legs on the weekends! Their was a short wait to get seated, but I can see why. You can play games next door if you wish. Make the stop.

Ross R.

Yelp
Flies are everywhere due to the horse track. Food was bland. Only one person serving. He was handling the bar and the floor. Not sure if someone called out but will never be back.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Service and food was great! We had the two for one fajitas. They came out steaming !The cold toppings were plentiful! The serving size was terrific. They did not cut back because of the special. Everything went well and cannot wait to go back!
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Place is hella dope! Great dive bar atmosphere, great happy hour, great food, and great service to boot. Got two pounds of snow crab, nice portion of tender, SEASONED fries, and Cole slaw, which was lovely, but could use just a little something, not sure what, but still creamy and delicious. Our server was great and took great care of us. Definitely going back!
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
We came for all you can eat crab legs and weren't disappointed. The service from Andy was spot on, and we ate til our bellies were full. Only thing missing was the old bay seasoning.
google avatar

Hollie L.

Yelp
This place is a gem!!! Was craving crab legs and found that they serve AYCE crab legs on the weekends. I love the decor and our server Gio not only makes a phenomenal mojito he is super attentive and nice. Will definitely be returning.

Elle M.

Yelp
Food used to be awesome even after they switched owners years ago but they don't clean the oil in the fryer or cook kosher on the grill. I'm allergic to fish and can't eat here anymore because my throat closes up. I've tried multiple times with the same experience. Very disappointing!

B G.

Yelp
2nd time no one comes to wait on us...leaving again! Sucks because food is great, service awful!

Matthew B.

Yelp
Awesome tacos. Buy their food. Also they were only 3 bucks a pop on Friday afternoon.

Mark G.

Yelp
I'd like to review the food but after 10 mins of waiting we never got talked to at our table so we left. 2nd time in a few months we've had to do that.

Gay M.

Yelp
The All You Can Eat crab legs were great! The service was superb!! Great ambiance with outdoor seating!!

Yelp
A diamond in the rough. Went to Mothers next-door first, and had a horrible experience and decided to jump and come here. What a great decision. Laura, our server was amazing. Seated us, took our drink orders and we all had a beer within 5-6 minutes. We came on taco Thursday. Amazing selection of tacos all around three dollars. And the size is amazing. This is the place to come For lunch or dinner. Can't wait to come back
google avatar

Yelp
Went to this restaurant while visiting family and we each ordered AYCE crab legs. The restaurant was clean and had lots of tables and opening seating. We came in during dinner time on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Service was good and there was never a delay in refilling the crab legs. The crab legs were less than average and a lot of work for little meat. The benefit of AYCE is you don't have to put work in because they bring more but then a lot is wasted. I would have rather just ordered off the menu than spending $55/per person.
google avatar

Britney P.

Yelp
Service was 10/10. Our server was very attentive & informative of the menu, we were very well taken care of. The crab was a bit salty but we were told that ahead of time by our server who said that's how they naturally are & there is no added salt when they are boiling it. The unlimited sides were fantastic and helped make for a well balanced meal. Ate at least 2 lbs of crab! Good atmosphere, music and ambiance were nice. Would come back again for AYCE crab legs & the yummy sides

steve w.

Yelp
All you eat crab legs, so good Will try to make it this Saturday They kept coming. . My place for 5 years plus
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
Well, the food was really good. The ambience was bad specifically the music that was playing on the loudspeakers. it was the type of music that would have a parental advisory on the CD cover. And actually a family walked in and stopped listen to the music for a second and walked out. It's too bad too because the decor is a nice beach looking decor, they need to program some music that fits their decor makes people want to come in. So I would give this place a very high marks for the food, but very low marks for the music. If that was just a one off that particular night then maybe they'll fix that

Yelp
Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen is my new favorite Taco Thursday spot! Surf Shack is located in a Plaza next to Mothers Restaurant, Kang's Garden, Froyo Fresh, and is behind McDonald's in the Westchase Area of Tampa off Linebaugh and Countryway. Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen features a laid back surfer vibe with surf boards hanging from the ceiling, chill surfer style island music, and aquatic wild life etched on their wooden tables. The covered patio features lights that look like stars in the sky! There's tons of tvs by the bar and a big screen TV for watching hockey games or football games! Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen goes beyond boring tacos with the bare minimum of ingredients to satisfy the basic taco special and features marinades and toppings like I've never seen before! Surf Shack's Taco Thursday special includes west coast chicken, bacon cheeseburger, Jerk Chicken, Buffalo chicken tacos for $2, tiger shrimp, bangin shrimp, longboard fish, filet mignon tacos for $2.50, chimichurri steak, Surf n turf, tuna poke, and blackened grouper tacos for $3. The Jerk Chicken Taco came with tangy jerk sauce, sweet plantains, cilantro, lime, & aioli. The tangy jerk sauce had a great flavor with a little kick which was not too spicy and just right. 9/10 The Filet Mignon Taco came with marinated steak, garlic tomato salsa, pepper Jack cheese, and haystack onions. The garlic tomato salsa and balsamic marinade is not for everyone but I like it. This steak taco had a flavor unlike any other steak taco I've ever tried! 10/10 The buffalo chicken taco came with crispy fried chicken breast tossed in buffalo sauce, with lettuce, pico,& blue cheese dressing. The buffalo sauce had a bit too much vinegar for my taste but otherwise it was good. 7/10 The bangin shrimp taco came with crispy shrimp, bangin sauce, lettuce, tomato, and avocados. The Shrimp had an awesome flavor similar to but a bit spicier than the famous bang bang shrimp at bone fish! 10/10 Our waitress was quick and friendly. I look forward to trying more taco options on my next visits! If you're in the Westchase Area and craving some awesome tacos with a surfer vibe, definitely check out Surf Shack Coastal Kitchen!

Yelp
AWFUL SERVER. When I came in I was kindly greeted but when I went to be seated and got my order taken, my server Ryan was absolutely awful. He was incredibly disrespectful, seemed like he had no idea what he was doing, and was extremely dull. Next time I come, believe I will be asking for a different server.
google avatar

Hoyt C.

Yelp
Delicious and consistent! Always a treat for lunch or dinner. Great staff and fresh food.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
Yum! First time, but definitely won't be the last. Nice gem tucked in Westchase. Next time I'm trying the crab legs.

Betty J.

Yelp
Visited on a Sat for AYCE crab legs... highly recommended. Service, quality, attentiveness on point. Good vibes Will be returning.

David G.

Yelp
Always a family favorite especially on Sundays as the kids eat free. Their tacos are amazing and never get old. The Surf Shack wk always be on our short list when deciding on going out to eat.

Keith G.

Yelp
We have been coming here for "Taco Thursday" for over 10 years. The Thursday taco menu is discounted by half. Same amazing tacos, just half the cost! There is a TOD (Taco of the day) created each week by the chef, a server or even from a customer suggestion. We always try the TOD along with several standards. My favorites are the Banging Shrimp (hold the diced tomatoes), the Surf and Turf, Tuna Poke and Jerk Chicken. All on soft tortillas. My brother in law loves the Mother Clucker. Plan to arrive as early as you can. The service and food quality is best at between 4:45 and about 6 PM. When they get busy after around 6, it can take much longer for food to come out and preparation quality sometimes goes down. The servers are always looking to please, so if something isn't right, don't be afraid to tell someone. They will go out of their way to make it right. All the servers are very good. We ofter have "Geo" as our server. He can almost read minds. Sean is the manager and his wife works in the kitchen. They make a good team. The ambiance is "Coastal Florida". Relaxed. Very family friendly. We see lots of people with kids. Dogs are allowed in the outside covered patio in front. (Our Siberian Husky loves the Cheeseburger Tacos!) We plan to continue our tradition of Taco Thursdays at the "Shack" Always good food. Good company. Friendly folks!

Yelp
I have ordered takeout food several times in the past and it was excellent ...last night was not the case. I got the sunburn steak burrito which advertises as including spinach. Instead of spinach there were chunks of wilted lettuce and no sauce ...very disappointed

Rick O.

Yelp
Had ayce crab legs. Great price good service. Food was all good and came out quickly and was hot.

Yelp
Surf Shack in Westchase has an amazing variety of tacos - including some unique fish and seafood tacos that My family have come to love! They have specials on their tacos on Thursdays (they range from about $2-3) so it is a great value, but it also means they are usually packed on Thursdays. Sometimes we'll order tacos to go on Thursdays (still get the special prices if you call in an order), but you have to deal with the packed parking lot. Although you can order online through their site or with a food delivery app, those prices seem to be higher. Their servers seem to be quick, even for pick up orders. I have only had one time where my order wasn't ready when I arrived, but didn't have to wait long. My favorite taco is the Tiger Shrimp - it is flavorful with a variety of textures, all for $2.50 on Thursdays! Some of the other tacos our family have tried and enjoyed include: jerk chicken, blackened grouper, surf n turf (yum!), and filet mignon. They are priced so well you can order a variety to try and see what you like best. They offer other specials during the week including happy hour and kids eat free nights, so check out their website for all the details. Outdoor covered seating is available with fans overhead for hot Florida evenings. No matter the day, Surf Shack always seems busy. With other popular restaurants in that plaza, the parking lot can be crazy at dinner time too (especially since it connects to a McDonald's). My suggestion is to visit Surf Shack on a Thursday with a small group and order at least one of each taco so you can try them all!
google avatar

Paula Q.

Yelp
We had a family lunch and it was the first time any of us. We were greeted right away. We sat down at our table and was immediately waited on. Next the food. My daughter and I eat low carb. We got the chicken/shrimp fajitas with lettuce cups. Come to the table steaming hot. And I'd love to have the recipe for them because the spices that were used on them were so delish. Surf Shack is about mid way from us and my daughter and in laws so this is our new place. It is a fun place, lots of TVs for watching sports and a game room. Made really cool with an indoor/outdoor seating. Nice big table to accommodate our family.

Jason Z.

Yelp
Good food, especially Caribbean chicken tacos, great service and relaxing atmosphere.

Chris N.

Yelp
Smells and they always have a bottle of fabreez they spay behind the bar. Makes your food taste bad

Isabelle M.

Yelp
Walked in and was immediately sat. Took our server ryan about 10 minutes to come over when they weren't even that busy. Had the fajitas, a couple tacos and the kids tacos. Food came out quickly and was good, service could've been better. May return in the future for a different server.
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place because its close to home but it's mediocre at best. I have ordered twice via uber eats. I have tried all their tacos, sloppy presentation and their chicken and steak are very dry and odd tasting. You ever take a bite and instantly say "no" and not eat the rest. That was the chicken in the tacos and nachos I got. Honestly the best thing is their hot chips and queso and everything comes in their microwave containers. I even tried their grouper sandwich, large, but meh at best. (go to frenchy's in Clearwater if you want the best grouper sandwich imo). Sorry but I won't be back.

Andrea P.

Yelp
Let me start by saying Laura is amazing. we were in town for a medical conference. we wanted to find a place for crab since we are from Midwest. We found the surf shack and man was it good. Laura had the best customer Service, she made us feel welcomed And like weve Been there before. She is the reason we came back today.
google avatar

Rosanna M.

Yelp
Not in love with this place. It's too bad too, because they have a nice patio and are nearby where we live. The food hasn't been very good the last two times we gave it a shot. And the place has a really musty smell and untidy restrooms, which makes us wonder about the cleanliness of what isn't in view. We won't likely be back.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Coconut shrimp is good. The broiled grouper plate is good. Everything else is such a disappointment. Bartender "greeted" us by saying it you're here for endless crab it's too late it's over for the night. Server was fine, ultimately, food was not worth the price or wait. We wouldn't go back.

Steven W.

Yelp
heading there tomorrow. Looking forward to this for a year plus now. Steven the owner is great, I bring my own butter for them to heat up. Most people are 5 pounds of legs, like my daughter and wife. Me 15 lbs plus. I bring my own tools to get the meat out. 2 1/2 ounces on average. So ready. I see its 55.99 now. can not beat that for sure
google avatar

Nico P.

Yelp
Most average seafood you can find in this area. Not bad, not too good, classic seafood.
google avatar

April S.

Yelp
We just moved in down the street from Surf Shack. We saw there was all you can eat crab legs on Saturday. The sign says it starts at 4. My boyfriend called to make sure it was still going on, and found out that it's actually all day Saturday. We decided to try them out this past Saturday and we were not let down. The meal is actually for crab legs and 2 sides (all of which is all you can eat). We didn't eat much of our sides cause after all we really wanted the crab legs. This is a place we will frequent.
google avatar

Krista H.

Yelp
We went for the all you can eat crab legs and they did not disappoint. They were seasoned perfect and very fresh. You could see the stem coming from them. The price of the all you can eat I felt was a great deal if you like crab legs as much as us. You can not get that price anywhere for as much as we ate. Not only was the food great but the service was amazing. Giorgoa was great! He made our experience even better. The place itself was very clean and the music was fun and upbeat. We will be sure to go back again.
google avatar

Joseph Q.

Yelp
I have been going to Surf Shack sine they opened. Great food & atmosphere. I relocated to TN 4 years ago and always stop in to visit when the wife and I are in town visiting the kids. The tacos are the best ever at an unbelievably low price. Beer is always cold and great wine also. Both my kids worked there at one time and this place just keeps getting better. Great job Steve!
