Bronzeville’s best restaurants on Chicago’s South Side - Eater Chicago

"A deejay spins old-school hip-hop as guests wait patiently for to-go orders or a table at this bustling little seafood restaurant. Fried lobster is the specialty at Surf’s Up, and you can get it as a dinner with fries, as a sandwich paired with fried shrimp, or po’boy style. There’s a lot to choose from if you dig fried seafood, or order the “beach feast,” which comes with one pound of crabs legs, plus shrimp and lobster tails. Non-seafood stars: fried biscuits, house-made Hennessey sauce for the fried chicken wings, and collard greens made with smoked turkey." - Audarshia Townsend

If you're looking for crispy, juicy, fried seafood dinners, Surf's Up Bronzeville is the place to go! Their batter/breading was delicious and flavorful. Fries could be a little crispier but flavorful all the same. Portions were decent.. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating - they made the dine in experience so pleasant!

We got the combination, Fried lobster tail with shrimp and combination Hennessey wings and fried shrimps. The tail was a little overcooked, but good flavor.

They get a 3 because it's a hit and miss. The food can be good one day then mediocre the next, I waited 45 minutes for this (minus a wing) and it was terrible. They literally only gave me half a piece of tilapia and it was dry and overcooked. I called and talked to someone who first said naw it's a whole piece of fish (almost arguing), then said well I don't know I just do what they tell me you gotta talk to the "boss". Then I talked to the boss and was told this is how the $5 dinner is sold (2 wings and 1/2 fish) but never do they say in the restaurant on menus or anything that it's half a piece of fish. It actually says 1 fish on the flier. My second complaint is the music they were playing while waiting. The speakers were turned up so loud in the back that the music could be heard up front over the TV's that were on. The kind of music that was played was vulgar, very inappropriate, and unprofessional especially considering there were quite a few elderly people waiting as well. I'm just disappointed. Update: Tried to give them another chance but service and food still sucks. Waited 45 minutes and paid $10 for 5 pieces of overcooked shrimp. 2 stars and I won't be spending my money here again.

VEGAN FAM: Flavorless rubber nuggets. Don’t do it. The Shock n’ Shrimp was shockingly underwhelming. Not an iota of seasoning. The fries were delicious tho. That’s the one star.

I was so disappointed in this place. All the meal here ranges from 22 to 28 dollars. The food is bland and the portion size is not worth it. Don't waste your time and money going to this place. I tried to support this place because it's black owned not a good idea.

The food was fast and delicious. I only waited 15 mins. or less for the food. They didn't have exactly what I wanted on the menu so she customized my order and I was very satisfied. The guys in the back know what they're doing! The shrimp was perfectly cooked, the catfish was beautiful and the fried green tomatoes are my favorite! Just like my momma make them.

Yelp
My mom and I went on a Tuesday afternoon. I had shrimp and grits and it was delicious. It was a nice serving size. You can get the shrimp grilled or fried. My mom had the $7 holla one of which was catfish nuggets, seasoned fries and a drink. She said it was really tasty. The staff was friendly, pleasant atmosphere. Plenty of street parking. This restaurant is Black Owned.
