We were planning to go for a fine dining place. I am a photographer so I am more interested in food presentation as well. I am a foodie as well. I was checking out high-end restaurants and I found this one. I wanted to go to Le Mistral but my wife, as always, wants to go to India place.
The staff greeted us cordially and seated us very quickly. We are vegetarians so our choices were pretty much limited.
We ordered samosas and special samosa chat for appetizers/Starters.The samosas were extremely well made. The crust was fluffy and melted in the mouth. The potato stuffing inside is mildly spiced and lacked seasoning. The is salt is an issue for us because the salt is really missing. In our defense, we did mention we need everything spiced up. The special samosa chat was not of special quality- It was dry and lacked "seasoning" again. To my surprise, the table set up was missing salt & pepper - I am not sure why??!!
Then we ordered several entries and some side dishes: Mutter Paneer, Daal, Malai Kofta, Onion Kulchas, Naan, Rice.
Mutter Paneer completely lacked seasoning; pretty bland in fact. We asked for making it spicy (like hot)- but the dish was sub-par.
Daal was another story - I might not have read the ingredients on the menu, but I thought it was daal thadka but this turns out to be Dall makhani (which I hate ). So I did not even taste it.
Malai Kofta was very creamy but the same story continued; it lacks seasoning. At this point, I had to ask for salt & pepper. It took a while for the waiter to bring the salt & pepper!! By this time we have already finished half of our food.
We ordered Onion Kulchas and Naan. We only got onion kulchas in the basket, but the waiter specifically mentioned that Onion kulchas and Naans were both in there; nope. So we asked for Naan. It took a while get this. My daughter who wanted Naan had to wait quite a while to start her eating.
Onion Kulchas were really greasy and stuffed with too many onions (or may the onion were not cut small enough) for my liking. It actually felt like I was eating an Onion Dosa (South Indian variety) not the onion kulcha.
The side order of rice was spiced with mild Indian spices with peas, but It was extremely dry. The Rice should have a sheen, smoothness which was missing. It was seasoned well actually.
Then comes deserts. They only had 3 choices. Out of three choices one was mentioned as Chef's favorite. It was Chai Ice cream. We ended up ordering the chef's favorite. When we ordered this we wanted to order 1 ice cream and wanted to share. I said 1 ice cream 3 spoons (because we wanted to share and we were 3 in total). Guess what we got 3 ice creams instead!!! I am not sure if they pay attention to what I said. Anyways, I was not going to make a big deal out of it; so we starting eating the desert. It was really not for our palette. We really did not like it. There is something with the "after taste" that we did not like.
The presentation, which I care a lot about, was not that pleasing as I thought.
The price was reasonable, in my opinion.
I think our experience was not really good. The food was bland lacked some main characteristics of Indian food. The food is not seasoned well. The table was missing salt & pepper. The waiters messed up orders.
The staff was courteous no problem with that.
The parking space really nonexistent. Most of the parking was reserved for a salon in the same strip. Because we went at a time when the salon was closed, the parking was barely available. Good luck getting parking when the salon is open.
As always, these Indian restaurants are more geared towards Americans and not for core Indian/Desi like me. I totally get that, but what was disappointing is that we specifically mentioned for making everything spicy - yet I am not even sure if they even cared. I do not think it was even conveyed to the chef. Otherwise, what is the big deal in adding 2 spoons extra chili powder into the dishes? The fact is, my request was never conveyed.
Probably my palette is not sophisticated enough :-). This food is not for me.
