The Best Restaurants In River North

"This 12-seat omakase is hidden in the back room of Lady May, and like Sushi-San, is a little bit tongue-in-cheek. But where Sushi-San has things like poop emojis for bathroom signs, Sushi Bar decides to go unconventional when it comes to the food. For $165, you’ll get 17 courses of “new wave” nigiri, involving foams, dehydrated herbs, and multiple blowtorch appearances. Toppings can be a little over-present, but everything is generally pretty tasty. Courses move along at a brisk pace, and the atmosphere is fun enough that this is still a good option for a special occasion dinner." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru

Sushi | Bar Chicago Review - River North - Chicago - The Infatuation

"There are Sushi Bar locations popping up across the country ( and already have some). They all follow the same format: a speakeasy-style omakase with “new wave” nigiri, involving foams, dehydrated herbs, and multiple blowtorch appearances. The 12-seat Sushi Bar Chicago hidden in the back room of is no different. The $165, 17-course experience starts with a welcome cocktail, and then you’re led to a dark room the size of your first studio apartment. Seat assignments are marked by a name card, in part to help keep track of allergies and any upgrades you opt for—think truffle shavings and caviar. You know, in case a piece of wagyu with brown butter miso foam and dehydrated dill isn’t dressed up enough. The pieces are undeniably inventive—you may get spot prawn with strawberry gochujang or akami with red miso and everything bagel spice. But some bites have more than three or four competing toppings, and the flavors can start to feel muddled. That’s especially true when multiple courses are finished with lemon juice, so everything starts to taste vaguely citrusy. But Sushi Bar is still a good option for a special occasion dinner. Courses move along at a good pace, and the atmosphere is fun enough that you won’t feel self-conscious if you get a little buzzed from the beverage pairings." - Veda Kilaru

Sushi|Bar to Open This Spring in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Tucked inside the forthcoming River North spot Lady May, the ten-seat Sushi|Bar will bring a splashy, spendy 17-course omakase to a 375-square-foot space at 405 N. Wabash Avenue, serving 30 patrons each night (10 per seating). Executive chef Ambrely Ouimette, who began working in sushi at 16 and worked at Matsuhisa Denver, applies a distinctly non-traditional approach with an ever-changing menu influenced by local purveyors and her travels to Italy, Portugal, and Spain — she still uses traditional techniques like breaking down and curing fish but loves surprising diners with dishes such as a smoked sawara with three types of preserved wasabi, and signatures like aged bluefin akami with dehydrated miso and everything bagel spice, and kanpachi with pineapple, passionfruit, and shaved coconut. The Chicago location will distinguish itself from its Texas and Florida counterparts with mid-century touches — terrazzo floors, brass fixtures, and a marble green backdrop behind the bar — and Ouimette says she wants diners to feel comfortable, relaxed, and involved in conversation rather than bound by omakase pretensions." - Naomi Waxman

I wish I could give 6 stars out because this place is AMAZING. The chefs are incredibly nice and walk you through each bite. They were both super personable and were willing to answer all of our questions. All of the fish (and wagu!) were so so fresh and had out of this world flavors. My only regret is not savoring each bite a little bit more! My husband had a nut allergy, which we told them about beforehand and they were very accommodating. We also don't drink alcohol so during the bartender made us a mocktail! Outstanding service and outstanding food from beginning to end.

Amazing experience! Celebrated wife’s 40th, loved the intimate setting, cocktails, sake and beer was great, truly enjoyed the non traditional approach to their menu, the bites were incredible. All 3 chefs had applied their creativity in creating each course and it was fun. I’d go back again when I recover from paying for this meal 😀

Google
Kudos to the Sushi Bar Chicago team. Originally went to Sushi Bar Austin and had a wonderful time. My second experience at Sushi Bar Chicago was also A+. Marcos and his team were professional, knowledgeable, and fun. Most important, they did a great job with the sushi. This is an experience and I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique social dinner experience.

Well worth every penny. If you have any reservations about visiting this placed based on its number of reviews (20 at the time of my posting this), please dispel those. If I could give this Omakase Experience a rating higher than 5 ⭐️’s I would. With some of the most interesting, different, and inventive flavor combinations & textural differences I’ve ever had (not just in a nigiri 🍣 but ever). Me & my wife were nothing short of completely blown away by everything. Everyone knows the 5 tastes that we can detect (𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁, 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆, 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿, 𝗕𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿, & 𝗨𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗶). Most Omakase Experiences focus on the Salty, Sour, & Umami notes the heaviest. Sushi | Bar gives you the full experience with some amazing Sweet notes as well as some soft Bitter notes on some of the rolls to accentuate the other core flavors.

Google
The food, service, and atmosphere was amazing. This has been one of the best omakase experiences I have had! Marcos (our sushi chef) was attentive, interacting with everyone, and made everyonefeel welcome and at home. He even let us have a bit of fresh wasabi so that we could sample it before it was incorporated into a dish. If you are on the fence about this restaurant, get off the fence, and book that reservation as this restaurant is well worth it!

Google
Incredible experience. I will warn you all, it’s a hefty price tag. But, there is just nothing like it. The staff and chefs know you by name, learn your likes and dislikes and really create an intimate experience. Though this experience is meant to be entertaining, Omasake is a serious craft, that requires keen attention to detail and years of experience. Each sushi piece was nothing short of art work and with absolutely zero room for error. Each piece of protein and many of the ingredients are flown in overnight from Japan, New Zealand, etc. Truly the best of the best.

When I go to a restaurant, there are only three things that I think are important; Atmosphere, Taste and Service. This restaurant is one of the few restaurants that meets all three of them. It was so impressive that everyone entered together on a theme such as speakeasy, and it was a memorable evening that the place with the name tag on it and the chef knew all the guests' names. The chefs taking turns explaining the menu was also different from the omakase I've been to, and the chefs who had small talk in between were very friendly. The dining space itself was small compared to other places, but I could feel the food itself more. HOWEVER, I didn't give 5 stars because the sake pairing was very disappointing. Drink pairing is about giving drinks that go well with the food, but it was very disappointed that sake was not even related to the food thats was serving and even the sommelier was said that the current sake goes well with the food that had already passed…. Definitely recommend this restaurant for any occasion but not with sake pairing. *They also do valet for $18.00 which came out to be cheaper than street parking around the restaurant*

Google
Sushi Bar delivers one of the best Omakase experiences in Chicago. The chefs are incredibly skilled and pair delicate and robust flavors and textures into a 17 course feast.

Yelp
The best omakase restaurant is @sushibarrestaurants. It offers a 13-dish omakase along with a handcrafted dessert. The attention to detail is so impressive and the chefs were so fun and easy to talk to. You seriously need to try this place or else you are missing out! -@bellieeats

Yelp
This was such a great, fun experience! The chefs do a great job at entertaining the guests- it makes the experience fun. They provided amazing choices of fish. I'm so happy that they offered Uni! The thing about sushi bar is that they use really strong flavors which I liked. They did a good job at pairing the right flavors with certain fish. It almost slaps you in a face - in a good way! My boyfriend did not like that and would rather focus on tasting the fish itself. He felt that it those flavors were overpowering. It really just depends on what kind of omakase you like.

Yelp
Having previously experienced various omakases and visiting from California, I can confidently say that this omakase is worth it. Sushi | Bar seats 12 people right in front of the sushi chefs. It's a very intimate experience and both chefs were creating each dish at the same time, one after the other. Sushi | Bar offers a 13-dish omakase plus a crafted dessert. I chose to add black truffles to my scallop dish, but since I'm allergic to scallops, they kindly substituted it with salmon while still adding the black truffles. The attention to detail was impressive, ensuring my water was always filled and I had enough pickles. The two sushi chefs were friendly and easy to converse with, making my meal at Sushi | Bar thoroughly enjoyable.

Yelp
Incredible experience at the new sushi bar hidden in the back alley of Michigan Ave and Wabash inside lady May. We were greeted with a welcome bee's knees drink. The Omakase itself is a unique take on Omakase sushi stepping away from the traditional Japanese approach of simplicity. The flavors and textures of how the pieces are mixed and matched are special and every piece stood out in its own right drawing from Tex mex and a lot of pan-Asian flavors. With that being said, if you are looking for an omakase experience that is a bit more traditional, this may not be your go-to. All 3 chefs for our party of 12 were all engaging, friendly, and detailed, preparing every piece intricately. The service was outstanding as well! Would recommend for anyone looking to try add a new Omakase place done well to your list!

Yelp
So creative, high quality, fresh, fun, and delicious. If you've tried the other more traditional omakase restaurants and want something different, this is the spot. Luxury ingredients, each bite was a little piece of heaven. The chefs were so personable, they really nailed everything, we were impressed with the service overall. We had a bottle of sake that was lovely as well. 10 out of 10 would recommend and we will definitely be back!

Yelp
The good: Sushi is amazing. The flavors are creative and work well together. SB is truly a unique experience and that's why you might go: for the experience. Staff is extremely friendly and the space is well designed and very clean. This is new to Chicago about 2 months since its opening. But...it's a shiny object and here's the truth: The bad: Very expensive: we opted for the up-charge to both get caviar and truffle. We were charged quite a bit per person...however, we were never told or notified we were actually receiving this!? Instead - I asked nearly towards the end of service and was told we were fed it already - however it seemed like what we received was what everyone else did so I felt a bit scammed. I never felt like the extra stuff was pointed out so I didn't know either way. My advice would be to actually acknowledge who ordered what and show them! Lighting is poor and you can't really see what you're getting. They don't want you using flash which I understand but they need better lighting to showcase their fare better. Since you have track lighting - maybe install a pin spot over each place setting. It would be really nice to see what's there. The entire staff while very friendly have really no speaking skills. They're trying and they're all new at this so I want to cut them some slack. But even in the beginning when the host was trying to tell the group (this is only a 12 seat dining experience - all 12 sit at the sushi chefs table so to speak) the host was speaking so softly - while music is playing that no one can hear her. I think she was telling us the rules and what to expect? Same thing inside the room: where the chefs while extremely nice- speak so softly that while they're explaining all these amazing ingredients you can't hear or understand them. They say these culinary words so fast that it's all a mashup. There's no clear announcing - what I suggest for the amount you're charging is to print up a clear description of everything (the evening's menu) and let the people take it home as a remembrance. Since there are 3 seatings. We chose the first one and it feels rushed. They throw it down, you eat with your hands!!?? No chop sticks - no napkins...just a cold wet towelette that is quite gross. We thought it was a towelette to wash our hands prior to service - but they never picked it up and I was told that's my evenings napkin! They rush you out because the next 12 person group is waiting at the door. My suggestion is to always provide clean napkins and leave chopsticks available. Maybe rotate the wet towelettes and provide 2-3 per service? Sorry but eating with your hands isn't good - bad idea. Especially the pickled salad: why force us to eat this drippy salad with our hands? The saki pairing was good - but also expensive about $100 a person and the pours weren't equal...if you were first great... but if you're last you knew it and you got half a pour. Plus he didn't clearly explain each and again, bad speaking skills. No one seems to be the main front person - it's odd - and I can't see this ever being a place we would go again. It's definitely a one and done sort of place. We spent $853.38!! and seriously went for pizza after- I am not kidding. It was good but so are a lot of sushi places and we would have spent maybe $50-75 a person and been full. It's all show but the show isn't that good. It was a let down. I'm sure they can build on this but I don't see it lasting. What I do see are other good sushi places serving this style - better, less expensive and will provide a better value. They include 22% service charge and then try to get you to tip again!? I feel suckered and a bit Pist-off to be honest. Save your $400+ per person and go elsewhere.

Yelp
The food was good but service and attention to detail were far missed. For a birthday dinner - it was far under par. I definitely have had better sushi experiences in the city. A complimentary cocktail was given prior to the dinner which we did not receive because we were 5 minutes late - now we could have still been given the beverage to enjoy with the meal. Instead were given a menu to purchase drinks - a little off putting to not even mention nor offer the welcome drink. Next, the team reached out multiple times about my allergies - despite all of that. Twice I was served an item with my allergies and then I had to call it out when they described what it was. If they didn't, I would have eaten something that I"m allergic to. Now, when I stated it, I was given a substitute with not even the fish the original dish was - that's rude. And they have the quantity when there are other services. If I am going to get the leftover fish, I can go elsewhere. But for a restaurant of this caliber to give a customer food containing their allergies is beyond unacceptable - not at this level of service. To say the least, I won't be returning. And if you have allergies, you can count on them not being diligent about them.

Yelp
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Sushi Bar. Chef Marcos, you are a shining star. First things first, THANK YOU for this experience. If you love sushi and even if it isn't your favorite, this is a whole new experience. So much so we came to the Chicago location after visiting the Sushi Bar in Austin, Texas at the end of August. We were told that they might be opening up a spot so here we are. Hands down, the best sushi. We can't say enough good things. If you can make a reservation, just do it. I didn't take many photos bc I wanted to enjoy the experience, again. You won't want to either! The chefs explain each piece as they make them for you. A very intricate process. Beautifully done. Thank you times one million.

Yelp
This sushi restaurant was fun and tasty. The chefs were very delightful and made the omakase experience relaxed and enjoyable. The menu was right in front of you, and they tell you about each piece as you bite into their freshly made nigiri. The pickled vegetables were much better than the usual gari, refilled without asking. The sake pairing was amazing; two of them were really good (can't remember all the names, sorry). Omakase for 9-10 people per time, I think. The nigiri was well-prepared and enjoyable because they added different styles to each piece. It's within walking distance from home, so very conveniently located. The name tag was fun because you can talk to anyone or everyone by their names.

Yelp
Pictures of 10 of the 16 piece omekase. One if the best in Chicago so far. Sushi chefs were very friendly and explained each piece in detail. Quite knowledgeable about where the fish is from and type of texture. The ingredients used to bring out flavors is well chosen. Place is tucked inside of Lady May . Feels like you are going to a omakase speak easy place. We loved the experience.

Mark D.

Yelp
I was really surprised at how good the omakase was. They pair the fish and rice with very interesting flavors you would not expect with Nigiri. The sushi chefs are fun and we had a great time.

Kelly H.

Yelp
Mind blown. Such an amazing Omakase experience! Being in such an intimate setting, being able to talk to the chefs as they create the tastiest creations, was just amazing. Each bite is more creative and more delicious as the meal goes on! Such decadence, such flavor! The drinks, the service, the company, it all added up to one of the most memorable dining experiences I've ever had.

Yelp
One of the best experiences I've ever had dining wise! Everyone was so friendly and explained everything so well. My boyfriend and I came for a celebration and were perfectly taken care of. Food was incredible and every bite was savored so well. They even let us enjoy pieces for a second time at the end, which we could not pass up! The coziness and intimacy of it all was the cherry on top and I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend my saturday night.

Julie A.

Yelp
Deliciously prepared and presented sushi in a super fun and engaging atmosphere. We loved it!

Yelp
best sushi I have ever tasted! such a cool experience having the chefs prepare and serve the food live!

Teresa H.

Yelp
Service was impeccable! Atmosphere was swanky and cozy! But the best part was the Sushi that was made by 3 amazing chefs right in front of you while they told you what it was and where it came from! Unbelievable taste. Best sushi ever and I had a Japanese mother in law that made sushi for us all the time!!! It's a 'must do' if you're in Chicago!!!

Andrew H.

Yelp
One of a kind experience! Freshest and best sushi I have ever had! Great service and atmosphere. Sushi chefs prepared and presented one piece of sushi at a time. Would recommend to anyone looking for a fun and unique evening out.
