Sushi By Bou - Midtown - Review - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Sushi By Bou now has two throwback sushi omakase spots in Philly. One is in Fishtown, and now, a Studio 54-themed place in Midtown Village. There’s a 12-course experience ($65) and a 17-course option ($125). On Fridays and Saturdays after 10pm, there’s a DJ and a dance floor." - Candis R. McLean

We had an incredible experience! Chef Harris was amazing. He was very attentive with every piece and even though there was a set course for the 12 course omakase, he made slight tweaks to cater to our taste. The bartender and host were also very friendly and gave us great service. The ingredients were very fresh and the flavors were bold. We enjoyed every bite and will definitely revisit!

Came here 1/18/25 for a 7 o’clock $100 17 course omakase, not my first choice but was open to try. We got there a little early and were sat at bar a little after the 7pm start time , I was taking a pause from drinking for dry January so only drank water which they didn’t get to refill until the end. The course does come with one complimentary shot. The pace was fairly quick between bites, the 3 course prawn was not good lol and of the 17 there were maybe 2 that I really liked and 2 that was good good which were the ikura salmon roe, gindara miso black cod, maguro the chopped tuna , wagyuni surf n turf. The rest were ok and our one in party was hoping they had a good suggestion for a checklist so we know what we’re eating and also for bigger servicing of 2 of eat piece instead of just the lowly one bite lol but guess they didn’t expect that is omakase lol. The ala carte choices sounded good like the Big Mac and guess I should have tried but was ready to leave lol. Small space with the one small lounge space we sat at for minute before being sat. It’s worth maybe doing the 12 course and maybe adding on ala carte, nice staff but I’d rather check out the other omakase spots or just get regular sushi orders that I haven’t tried yet.

Google
Absolutely gorgeous decor, definitely the best I've seen out of Sushi by Bou spots! Awesome food and drinks as always. Friendly and professional service. Omakase is the best way to experience sushi IMO and this experience always rocks. Wish experience didn't finish =). Looking forward to coming back.

Google
It was a different omakase from the ones i have tried before and kinda explained the chain-style omakase. Food was rushed and instead of 60 minutes concluded in 25 minutes and later the ala carte menu was offered to us. The omakase menu was kinda fixed and not like usual surprise omakase based on seasonal ingredients and the chief creativity. Overall good experience for a chain style sushi place.

Google
Did the omakase here it was pretty basic and nothing worth writing home about, the whole place had Instagram vibes but felt pretty artificial.

Google
Always on point. Disco sushi theme - like Andy Warhol studio 54 vibes. Great for dinner , happy hour or late night.

Not a great experience after having an amazing first experience at an omakase restaurant in NYC. While the atmosphere is very modern and aesthetic, the food itself was mediocre. A cocktail recommended by the bartender was not very good. Bar was filled with influencers recording everything and themselves which was rather obnoxious and took away from the experience as well. The Sugar Factory of omakase where it’s just for the glitz and glamour and photos / videos.

Google
I felt as if the overall omakase experience was lacking a bit, since we were so rushed. My partner and I had finished our 12 courses in just 25 minutes. Our chef pulled out a tray of precut sashimi from the fridge, and everything was already ready to go and it made sense why our service was so quick. The atmosphere was nice, and our server/host was very friendly. The mochi ice cream for my partner’s birthday was a nice touch and we enjoyed it a lot. *Not omakase related* We were told that the restaurant becomes a bar at night, and there would be a live DJ! We returned with friends around 11pm, and the restaurant atmosphere was very chill. The Dj’s music cut out for a few minutes which made the ambiance a bit awkward so we ended up leaving very quickly.

Yelp
Ambiance: disco themed decor. Since it's an omakase only restaurant, it's limited seating and feels intimate. For the omakase, you sit at the bar. Food: This is an omakase only restaurant so you can't order only one roll or order a la carte. The omakase is $65 for 12 pieces. After the omakase, you can order additional sushi. I was still hungry after the omakase so I had two more rolls. Note-they could accommodate a gluten-free request. Drinks: The drinks were quite good. My yuzu lemonade was quite good and the sake was quite smooth. Service: The hostess, server, and chef were very nice and attentive.

Yelp
We had such a great time at the Fishtown location last year that when I received an email offering a BOGO 12-course omakase, I jumped on the opportunity. Due to the restrictions of the coupon, we wound up opting to book this location due to the Sunday night availability. We nearly missed the subtle door on Chestnut St, which opens to a sushi bar and some booth seating, decorated with a disco theme that was super fun. We arrived 15 min early, while the prior diners were still wrapping up, so we were directed to one of the booths and promptly were served a cocktail. Once our 8 diners were assembled and the prior diners paid their tab, we were quickly seated and immediately began our journey through the courses, guided by both a paper menu and a large board detailing the offerings. Each item was prepared with precision and care with some delicious seasonings and flavors that complimented the natural flavor and texture of the fish --- we enjoyed every bite. Overall, we had a great meal, and the quality of sushi was excellent. However, I did notice a significant difference between the service and interaction at this location compared to Fishtown, but I do think this may have been the product of their promotion, which resulted in a need to turnover the table quickly. At Fishtown, we left feeling like we were friends with our sushi chefs, who joked and laughed with us throughout and set up a photo op at the end of our meal. At the Midtown location, our chefs spoke to us only to explain the courses, which is certainly practical and timely but just not quite as fun!

Yelp
This was my first time trying omakase, and my friend and I had a wonderful time here! The staff were amazing - everyone was so nice. It was cozy too; there were about 10 of us at the bar for omakase, and no other patrons in the restaurant. Each person got a plate with ginger, and two hand towels. The first hand towel was to clean our hands before beginning, and then a second one to clean our hands in between courses. We ate with our hands, but chopsticks are also available. There were twelve items on the menu, and they were all pretty good. Some of the items in the middle of the line up were a little wasabi-heavy for my taste, but I think that's a me problem. My favorite bites were the hamachi (yellowtail) and the unagi (bbq eel) - a great way to start and end the experience :) We were able to get BOGO, which was definitely helpful.

Yelp
Sushi by Bou has been popping up a bunch on social media - and in different cities around the US. The concept is interesting: a 1-hour, 12 course omakase for $65, served in a "disco sushi" setting with soft clubby music, mood lighting, and efficient, skillful sushi chefs. The setting was also surprisingly intimate for such a clubby vibe - I think there were 8-10 seats at our location, with two chefs on staff. Despite the abbreviated timing, we somehow never felt rushed. Chef Hussain made each course quickly and described each course to us, and he even invited my friend to torch the albacore! There was a lot of diversity in the types of fish we were served: we got to try two cuts of bluefin tuna (akami - lean & o-toro - fatty), as well as the seared albacore (bincho) tuna. I was really happy to see the botan ebi (sweet prawn) as one of the courses, my friend really enjoyed the miso cod course. The rice was nicely seasoned and each course was well-made & appropriately sized - none fell apart when I picked them up. We both ended our evening with an additional handroll ($10/ea for the chopped salmon one), and I was pleasantly surprised that the salmon was freshly chopped for each handroll, as opposed to just scooped from a prepped container. You could taste the difference in the handroll - the texture was still bouncy and the fresh taste of the fish came through. We both also ordered a cocktail special (some sort of green tea yuzu cocktail) for $20/ea. The drink was tasty, but I'd say that the cocktail price was definitely high and would have felt more shocking if the omakase had not been such a great deal. My friend noticed that gratuity was already included on the check when she paid - just something to note when you're closing out. If you've never had omakase before or are looking for a unique omakase experience, I think Sushi by Bou is a really fun and good-value option!

Yelp
Just couldn't pass up the offer they had on the 12 course omakase for two so we came to try this location as the one in fishtown was completely booked. We booked our dinner to be at 7:00 PM on a Sunday for 1 Hour Course. While we waited, we were seated on a small table while we waited for omakase to start. They offer a variety of drinks including alcohol, we ordered green tea which was $5 for a small cup. The omakase itself was decent, the sizes were small but appropriate for what we paid for. Our chef was amazing and very accommodating based on the food restrictions. Definitely enjoyed the experience and would recommend it.

Yelp
Great service! The sushi chef was super nice but not as interactive. He did explain everything to us. The decor was so cute. Reminded me of disco vibes. The disco place mats were such a vibe. Food was definitely taste but the quality was not as good as their other location.

Yelp
As one of the sushi obsessed on omakase experience was on the list of experiences as a must do. Sushi by Bou came as an impromptu reservation and fulfilled a sushi lovers dream! We were in Philly, enjoying our wedding weekend, when we were starting to decide for dinner. Needed low key and close by in staying at Loews. Came across reservation at Sushi by Bou and we were on our way. Arrived and was seated at a table and ordered a cocktail. What a fun feel with DJ music and vibe as we waited. Sat at the sushi bar and was so excited to start! They have the full omakase list on a board at the bar. The sushi chefs were well paced and helpful with conversation and questions about the dishes. It was the perfect amount of food, and fun to "pick our favorites" with couples around us chatting, as we ate. All sushi was crisp, super fresh and had surprise elements of flavor. Some with smoke, truffle, pumpkin spice! We loved the salmon roe hand roll and all with tuna. The sushi star was the prawn! OMG, how did they cure this thing, incredible texture and taste. We got brought into conversation how we were there celebrating, since getting married last night and they were so sweet to surprise us with a sparkler and complimentary mochi dessert. And chef's headbands. We felt so special!! And on the mochi- I am not typically a fan, but this mochi was so soft and tasty, not textures of gelatin at all. Overall Sushi by Bou is highly recommended for the price point. The food is exceptional and a must do if sushi tops your favs. They helped make our first husband and wife weekend a beautiful memory!!

Yelp
This was probably one of my favorite omakase experiences! Super chill and very quick, this place is known for fast, affordable omakase. We got a special promotion and it was $60 for the two of us for 12 pieces each! My favorites were the chopped tuna and surf+turf. Each piece is super fresh with large chunks of fish. Delicious

Yelp
I was lucky enough to find a BOGO deal for an omakase here at Sushi by Bou. I first heard about the Fishtown location but am glad that there is a Center City location as well. The service was very friendly. Chef Hussain made sure to explain what accompanied the fish given. I wish we had a better view of the courses being made as the bar counter on the customer's side was very high and I love seeing chefs work their magic. My memorable courses were the yellowtail, chopped tuna, toro (my favorite), and miso cod. Everything tasted super fresh and the rice to fish ratio was appropriate. This was my second 12-course omakase which has made me realize that 12 courses don't always keep me full but the experience is always nice. This was definitely worth the BOGO deal and is pretty comparable to another $60-70 12-course omakase I've had in the city.

Yelp
First off I want to say the staff are very nice and accommodating. I purchase a special that they were offering for bogo omakase. It was only offer for Sunday to Thursday? I didn't know they were closed on Sunday in which is the day I wanted to go. I message the restaurant and they accommodating me and accepted my special deal on a Friday night. The food was very delicious. They treated every guest their the same. Doesn't matter if you paid full price or like me who had the deal. We all got the same treatment and pieces of sushi. The manager knew I was celebrating my anniversary and we receive a complimentary toast. The decor of the restaurant was very different And the presentation of the food and drink was clean and amazing ! Def would come back to eat some delicious fresh sushi!

Yelp
Recently went to their omakase experience. It's a 1 hour 12 course omakase for $65, you truly cannot beat the price. The sushi was super fresh and delicious with great variations including hand rolls. They have some great yuzu cocktails that pair great with the fish selection, and they have a lounge and DJ that you can relax in after dinner. The staff are incredible as well. They did a sake shot with the whole bar and did a toast. It was super cute. Great experience and worth the money.

Yelp
My initial impression upon entering was that there was quite a nice, modern, bar-like feel to the establishment and it's definitely less intimidating than other omakase experiences where it's mostly quiet. There was a separate waiting area if you came in early or as the previous omakase seating was finishing up but the wait wasn't too long. The pieces served to us were pretty delicious though lacked any wow-factor. The chef did mention that the owners of the place creates the menu, which is fine, but everything tasted like something I could order at any sit down sushi spot. The service wasn't as attentive as they usually are at omakases and it felt disorganized on top of us being rushed. Understandably there was another party the hour after ours but my friend mentioned if there are add-ons, they should increase the time between parties. When we placed our add-on orders, the sushi chef either forgot or did not know what people ordered. The waiter even had sticky notes stuck onto the counter in front of the orders for the respective party. Before I recieved my final nigiri add-on, my plate was taken away given it was a few minutes into the next reservation and another had to eat her nigiri as she was about to leave given the time constraint. Overall, I'd recommend given this was a moderately priced omakase and if you want a more laid back feel. Also would recommend getting only one add on given the time constraint.

Yelp
This was my first omakase sushi experience and wow was it different! This was also based off the deal they were running online. I was worried overall I would not be full after this 1-hr 12 course meal but I was satisfied. The overall quality of sushi was great. I liked them all except for the prawn (just my personal opinion as I do not like the texture and taste). The yellowfin tuna was my favorite. I liked how they paired certain seasonings with the fish. It brought out the flavors and made it unique. The only downsides to the overall experience was the ambience. It felt like a club, with disco balls, music and odd decor. They also have you sit in this "cocktail" area while you wait to be seated at the counters. It was not that relaxing and again kind of awkward club like. Also, the stools at the counter were low. I know I am shorter but it was just a bit uncomfortable. Overall food flavors and presentation were excellent but the overall atmosphere was kind of a turn off for me.

Yelp
Drinks were good. Wait staff was attentive. Music was a vibe. It was very fun to experience new flavors and different sushi we have never gotten to taste before. We had a lot of laughs there. The hour flew by and I wish maybe the sushi was explained more or something was explained more. I would recommend to anyone who wants a new experience with sushi.

Yelp
Service was amazing and food was beyond delicious! Everyone who works there is fantastic.

Yelp
We have been a few times (once anniversary and recently birthday) and the service is impeccable. The host and chefs call you by your first name and are very friendly. They haven't been open long but have already hit their stride - service is informative, efficient, and thoughtful. There is never a water glass half empty nor alcoholic beverage missing replenishment. I was particularly impressed by the host (my apologies I forgot his name). He went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and even gave us a sake to celebrate my gfs birthday. Husain and Haris were fantastic - the fish was fresh and they added their own spin to the omakase menu. The uni was superb. Definitely a fantastic experience and we will be back!

Yelp
Had such an amazing time at the new Midtown location! I have visited almost all the SushibyBou locations as they're such a great concept - whether I'm traveling for work and seeing family, I can always find a SushibyBou nearby, can't wait them to get to the east coast! This location has to be one of my favorites so far! The aesthetics and vibe here is top tier! Great sushi (shoutout to Chefs Haris & Hussain) & the drinks and service were great! Thanks Millie - order her bartender special! Stayed after hours for the "Bou-Bar" Friday night! House music & Disco !? You know the vibes! Highly recommend
