Sushi By Scratch - Review - Downtown - Dallas - The Infatuation

"Sushi by Scratch is tucked away on the eighth floor of the Adolphus hotel, where they’ve fashioned a sushi bar from a hotel suite. The omakase spot serves unexpected courses like flounder topped with bright-green salsa, leading into heavier dishes and a few touches of showmanship—chefs torch bone marrow, letting it slowly drip onto waiting unagi for the evening’s most decadent bite." - Kevin Gray

It's called an EXPERIENCE for a reason! This was one of the most delightful things I have ever done. The passion, knowledge and care of each member of the staff (Cameron, Sienna, Donovan and Manuel) took the flavors and the fun of the dinner to a whole other level. I had lots of questions about the process, how things are traditionally done, the point of the fan and even the explanation about the wasabi and the music playing. It was just fantastic. We actually got sad when we realized how far we were in the experience and that it was almost over. 10/10 - would recommend. Sundays and Mondays are the best days to go! If you love sushi, even if you just like it, do yourself a favor and book this for yourself!

The chefs were absolutely amazing. Not only were they knowledgeable, but they were so friendly and inviting. We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating a birthday there, and they celebrated with us fully. The food is impeccable— but we would come back for the chefs every time. Thanks so much!!!

We had a great experience here. One of the best omakase in Dallas. Great food, service and ambiance. The bone marrow sushi was my favorite! Need to come back!

Nestled discreetly inside the Marriott, Sushi by Scratch Restaurants feels like a hidden gem—a speakeasy with no signage, making the discovery all the more rewarding. From the moment you step inside, you're transported into a breathtaking environment that blends elegance with intimacy. The sushi here is nothing short of phenomenal. The fish, flown in daily, is as fresh as it gets, ensuring every bite is an explosion of flavor. Texas may not be known for sushi, but this spot will make you rethink that entirely. Whether you're planning a romantic date night or hosting a team dinner, Sushi by Scratch is the perfect choice. The sake selection is impressive and thoughtfully curated, complementing the meal beautifully. And the staff? They're incredibly kind, attentive, and passionate about delivering an unforgettable dining experience. A word of advice: reservations are a must. Their limited hours and exclusive vibe mean tables fill up quickly. This isn't just a meal—it's an experience you won’t want to miss.

Me and my significant other couldn't have asked for a better experience! If you're looking for an Omakase experience, this is the place to be. The 17-course meal from start to finish was unlike any other flavor. Every piece delivered the most unique flavors! If you're looking for a very intimate dining experience, this is the place to be at

My reviews typically highlight photos to really get an idea of the ambiance, cuisine, and drinks. However, Sushi by Scratch is so unique and the lighting is not designed for photos - it's designed for people to forget about everything else except the curated experience at an elevated level even from the start as you find the secret door in a regular hotel hallway.... And that's exactly what your time will look like. Yes, I love high-end sushi as you know from my other reviews and I absolutely give Sushi by Scratch my enthusiastic endorsement - great food, fun experience and unique. It's a small number of people seated with you and everything is tailored to a nice, intimate experience with your staff while enjoying very high quality sushi. So many courses, so much attention to detail in careful presentation with lots of flavor compliments to enhance each bite! As for the cost? If you just get the dining experience and water, you'll still have a good time but I say splurge a bit - get some cocktails or a pairing flight, pop for the extra courses at the end - have some fun! It's sushi done splendidly! Tell the GM, Beau Taylor, that Tait says hello :)

An amazing hidden gem. Tucked away on the 8th floor of the Adolphus Hotel- this spot is an intimate bat seated sushi omakase. Delicious freshly prepared bites in front of you, this place entertained not just your taste buds but all your senses.

Overall Sushi by scratch was an amazing experience, although this will be our only visit. Starting from the beginning, the host that invites you in, gives you a welcome drink and sits you in the receiving room was not welcoming and we felt that we were waiting for a haunted house as no instruction was given on what was going to happen next. The dimly lit room has a couple chairs and tables, although it is a silent room with blue light and we felt out of place for a dining experience. We were eventually after 30 to 40 minutes brought to the back sushi bar where the event began. There were not many cocktails or wines available, although what we did have was very good (sauv blanc and spicy hibiscus martini). The sushi staff and the food was amazing, every bite was great and I would not change much. Only this was they put the same sauce on a good amount of the bites and many tasted very similar. Although our main issue was even after 19 courses, we left hungry. I am a standard build, 5 ft 10 inch 29 year old man, with a standard appetite, and we got in n out on the way home. Which was disappointing after paying almost 600 dollars for 2 people. I would rather go to Uchi plano and order anything I want until I was full and pay 300-350 dollars. Overall great staff (except maybe give the host a 6 out of 10), bartender was very nice and creative, sushi chefs were very nice and great at explaining the food. Although I think that same quality or small bites can be found elsewhere for less cost. I would rank Uchi plano as our best experience in DFW, then this place, then Uchi dallas. We have not tried Namo just yet. Overall, glad we came and I think its worth the experience, although the cost is not worth the hype. *Also looking at the other lower reviews, there are no comments from the restaurant on an explanation or apology.

Yelp
It was the perfect meal. The restaurant is inside the Adolphus Hotel and you wouldn't know it's there unless you're told where to go. It's a very intimate space with just 10 guests per seating, 3 chefs and one bartender. When you first get the instructions on where to go it felt kinda dodgy because you have to be brought up by staff on the elevator to a specific floor in the hotel . Then you have to find the hotel room that the restaurant is in which luckily wasn't too far away from the elevator. Once we got signed in we all sat in a different room with loungey furniture and were provided with a drink and a couple of appetizers to start off. Then once everyone had arrived we were moved over to the main room around the bar. Everyone was perfect at their job, working swiftly and deftly. Not a beat was missed and it felt very comfortable and relaxing. Because there are only 10 guests, there was chatting between us but at the same time it still felt private. We celebrated a birthday and they took a picture for us with the chef and a signed copy of the menu. Very cute touch. The omakase was phenomenal. Easily one of our favorite meals and we would definitely go back in a heartbeat. Reservations were not hard to make like some other omakase places in town which was nice. If you love sushi and omakase I would definitely give this place a shot.

Yelp
There are so many omakase restaurants in Dallas area now but I decided to take my mom here for her birthday and we absolutely loved everything about it!! Such an intimate space and when you first check-in, you are directed to a waiting room area where they serve a small cocktail and an amuse-bouche. Then the host takes you back to the sushi bar, its only seating of 10 people. There are 3 chefs and one server for drinks. Each bite and each sushi piece was so delicious and flavorful!!! My mom doesn't go to omakase often but she loved the experience and loved the food as well! At the end, because it was her birthday, the chefs and the whole group sang her happy birthday and they took a Polaroid picture for us to take home! What a nice little treat. Definitely recommend going here for any special occasion! You will not regret it!

Yelp
This was by far the best omakase experience I've ever had. Everything was just perfect and you can tell the host and the chefs truly love their craft. It was intimate, fun, a learning experience, and overall extremely delicious. What more could you ask for?

Yelp
My first Omakase experience and I highly recommend! Got there on time for the a pre-dinner cocktail and canapés. So worth it! So if you book, be there 30 minutes prior to your reservation time! Now, I had no expectations since it was my first time. Loved the vibe with the group and the staff. And the food was amazing. I did the drinks pairing. They do have one with whiskey and you can ask and they offer you a wine pairing as well, since it is not on the menu.

Yelp
All I can say is WOW ! The food here was amazing the best sushi I have ever had in my life ! If you can get the sake and cocktail pairing it complements the sushi so well ! The chefs were so friendly and engaging. Just wow I will def be back again amazing food and drinks ! 1000 percent reckoned !

Yelp
I won't go into too much detail on this review because the whole point of this restaurant is discretion. The experience here is very personal and not intimidating for those who are not sushi or culinary afficionados. All you need to know is you need to bring your full wallet. You will get what you pay for... and you will pay! Well worth it! We had the complete experience (if they offered it - we accepted it) and I suggest you do the same, if you can. Culinary Excellence!

Yelp
Such a fun experience in a speakeasy like vibe! Love that this takes place within one of the rooms of the Adolphus. Each part of the experience was delicious, and the service was impeccable all throughout.

Yelp
Such a great experience! Food was great, service was top-notch, and such a fun dining experience in general. I've tried a few omakase places in the past and I'd say this was one of the most intimate experiences so far. Chefs were so friendly and willing to mingle in conversations. All the fish were fresh and rice texture was on point. Some of the sushi's I wished had a bit less sauce on top but overall everything was great. I also liked that the 16 courses all consist of sushi only. My favorites were Madai, Toro, salmon, and Kanpachi. I heard they will be moving back to their speakeasy room soon from their temporary space so I would love to go back and try again.

Yelp
Please do not go here unless you want really bad food poisoning, me and my boyfriend went recently and it was not worth it we were sick for 5 days, couldn't hold any food or liquids down the restroom was a mess, it was so bad it felt like a near death experience waking up at 3 to run to the restroom, throwing up in my sleep. Will not be going here again. Wouldn't wish that on anyone it felt so horrible I'm not sure if it was the fish not being fresh or the cooks didn't was their hands but either way I used to love sashimi now im traumatized. And please get more comfortable chairs they they are not comfortable at all imagine paying 900 because we got the truffle and caviar just to sit through a annoyingly painful chair and to get sick not worth it give your money to Komodo or somewhere actually worth it.

Yelp
Absolutely a top tier omakase experience. The staff was great and informative as the environment is really intimate and interactive. The experience was informative and just incredible. 1000% worth it and recommend and will be back!

Yelp
All I can is is WOW! What a wonderful experience we had. This was an anniversary gift from my husband and both of our first times doing an Omakase. We loved the intimate, speakeasy vibes of this experience. All of the staff were so friendly and there was never any pressure to order more. There are three chefs that are there and two waitresses. The chef in the middle does all of the final touches and explaining of what you are going to be eating/what is put on the sushi. Every piece that we had was amazing and so fresh. Probably the best uni I have ever tasted! This experience is pricey but worth every penny. I highly recommend booking a reservation (in advance!) with Sushi by Scratch and hope to be able to do it again in the future.

Yelp
Seriously the best omakase I've had in Dallas. Its soo good and the service is amazing!! The whole experience from start to finish is 6 stars. Ambiance is great, we're definitely coming back soon!

Yelp
This was an amazing experience. We have been to "slow down" dinners before but this was a whole new experience. I absolutely loved the ambiance....it's in the Adolphus hotel and gives a speakeasy vibe. But it's not all show...it is supported by excellent service and food. Up to 12 people are served at a time which gives a very intimate experience. The new room they have is absolutely wonderful. It's cozy and decadent. There are three chefs who are phenomenal in every way. Absolutely professional, kind, and knowledgeable. It felt like a family. I cannot do the food justice with my words. My husband and I were...lost in bliss. The best sushi I have had in America. We will definitely be back for special occasionsor maybe even just for special visitors!! We need excuses to book.

Yelp
Incredible night and meal! Could not be happier with the service and atmosphere. Top 5 meal of my life. Worth every penny.

Yelp
Everything about this experience was fantastic. I am not someone who usually eats expensive meals. You'll find me often in the $10-$20/person range of restaurants mostly. I have been to a couple higher end restaurants but I've never really walked away feeling justified spending $100+ per person on a meal. The food usually is good, however that cost never really seemed worth it. All of that changed for me at sushi by scratch. After some thought and research I decided I would give a fine dining experience another try and ended up seeing positive reviews of this place. First, the location and vibe was amazing. It is tucked away in a nice hotel room that gives it a speak easy vibe. They greet you with a couple of delicious appetizers and a nice drink while you mingle with the other few guests and wait. When they are ready they walk you back to the room where 3 chefs are present and ready to serve you the meal. There are I believe 12 seats in total so you are really getting an intimate experience. Every chef was incredible in their skill and professionalism overall. There are 16 individual sushi pieces they walk you through and to say it is a great meal is an understatement. This is a journey around the ocean bringing vibrant flavors and combinations you wouldn't even dream of tasting. At least 12 of the sushi pieces were a 10/10 and the worst one was still probably an 8/10 for me and better than any sushi I had ever had before. I'm actually almost mad at this place because now all the other sushi I eat in life just makes me want to come back here. The quality, pacing, presentation, and atmosphere could not have been better. I do not drink alcohol and they accommodated that with non alcoholic versions of their cocktails that were quite delicious. The only thing I thought could use a slight improvement was the non alcoholic tea at the end served with dessert, but it did not change my opinion of the overall meal at all. At the end I walked over and paid. It was a bit under $400 for two people and I could not have been happier to pay it. I never thought I could pay that much for food and walk away satisfied but this completely changed my mind. It was worth every penny and I will be coming back guaranteed.

Yelp
Service, staff, ambiance, quality of fish, taste, execution...everything was phenomenal. I've been to the Montecito location and although the Dallas location has its own twist, the level of service and quality of fish were very consistent.

Yelp
Everything about this experience was amazing! My husband and I did this for a date night. I am not a huge fan of raw sushi - but this has definitely made me change my mind. Every piece was amazing - and got to try several things I have never had before. The atmosphere is beautiful and felt very intimate. Definitely worth it.

Yelp
Such a special dining experience! 17 delicious & meticulously prepared bites (plus 2 starter courses, a welcome cocktail & a dessert course) in a super intimate setting where you can watch the chefs work up close & personal. As lovely as the food is, the chefs are super friendly & talkative throughout & the ambiance is not stuffy at all. A truly enjoyable evening. Make sure you book your reservations well in advance on Tock, there's only like 10 seats.

Yelp
Brand new omakase that we decided to try out in the Dallas area. We saw an instagram video that caught our eye. Sushi by Scratch is a speakeasy sushi-omakase experience. We booked in advance and they have a neat little text messaging system. The restaurant is located on the 8th floor at the Adolphus Hotel. They have completely renovated and gutted a hotel room for their omakase restaurant and we were super excited to experience this. When we arrived, we rang the door bell but we did not get an answer. The hotel staff told us to go back downstairs to ask front desk and we checked our text... We found out that the room for the omakase restaurant is currently undergoing some renovations (bummer) but nonetheless we were still excited to try some nigiri! We went back downstairs and the staff had created this whole space in the back of a restaurant. This was unused space and towards the end of our dinner, we found out they had put it together in a matter of almost 2 weeks?! Which was so impressive. Anyways- not trying to get off track but as we arrived, we were greater by the host. We added on the truffle and caviar experience at $104 pp. We were seated in the waiting area, waiting for the other 6 guests to arrive. So the whole group was 8 people total. We were welcomed with a welcome drink along with 2 beginning appetizers (oysters and a tuna roll) both were so yummy! Once everyone arrived, we were taken in the back room (which I previously mentioned was put together in a matter of 10 days, and it looked amazing!) It was such a cool and more hip experience to the more traditional Omakase experiences we had. All of the Omakase restaurants that we have been to hold a high sense of formality (not saying this is bad at all, we appreciate the beauty of the formality that comes with it) but THIS experience had the beauty and entertainment of watching the sushi chefs make the nigiri and sashimi, hearing them go into detail/background of every piece of fish and element that came with it AND had such a laid back ambiance that we felt like we were sitting across from family. We loved it! The sushi chefs were great, full of personality and jokes, we got to talk about where they were from, etc. It was such a unique experience unlike all the other omakases we have been to. I don't want the term "laid back" be taken in a wrong way, we still dressed very nicely, everyone was in suit pants, jacket, button down shit, dresses, etc. you still would want to dress to impress and the chefs were all still very formal and knowledgeable, but in their own unique way. The quality of the ingredients were amazing. A favorite bite of the night was the bone marrow nigiri they made. I tried a new sake which ended up being a new favorite call "demon slayer." UNBELIEVABLE! Will definitely come back when they are back in the 8th floor hotel room to experience this as well!

Yelp
Terrible experience, stuck in a small room with rude guest and no supervision by management. We finally left when it got worse. Paid over $600 for that nights disastrous experience.! Avoid this place! One of the worst experiences in my life time.

Yelp
A time was had ! Food, vibes and service 10/10. If you want omakase Sushi by Scratch is where you should go. They did not disappoint. Yes, be prepared to spend, but you will not regret it. Just do it !
