Yelp
Brand new omakase that we decided to try out in the Dallas area. We saw an instagram video that caught our eye. Sushi by Scratch is a speakeasy sushi-omakase experience. We booked in advance and they have a neat little text messaging system. The restaurant is located on the 8th floor at the Adolphus Hotel. They have completely renovated and gutted a hotel room for their omakase restaurant and we were super excited to experience this. When we arrived, we rang the door bell but we did not get an answer. The hotel staff told us to go back downstairs to ask front desk and we checked our text... We found out that the room for the omakase restaurant is currently undergoing some renovations (bummer) but nonetheless we were still excited to try some nigiri!
We went back downstairs and the staff had created this whole space in the back of a restaurant. This was unused space and towards the end of our dinner, we found out they had put it together in a matter of almost 2 weeks?! Which was so impressive.
Anyways- not trying to get off track but as we arrived, we were greater by the host. We added on the truffle and caviar experience at $104 pp. We were seated in the waiting area, waiting for the other 6 guests to arrive. So the whole group was 8 people total. We were welcomed with a welcome drink along with 2 beginning appetizers (oysters and a tuna roll) both were so yummy! Once everyone arrived, we were taken in the back room (which I previously mentioned was put together in a matter of 10 days, and it looked amazing!) It was such a cool and more hip experience to the more traditional Omakase experiences we had. All of the Omakase restaurants that we have been to hold a high sense of formality (not saying this is bad at all, we appreciate the beauty of the formality that comes with it) but THIS experience had the beauty and entertainment of watching the sushi chefs make the nigiri and sashimi, hearing them go into detail/background of every piece of fish and element that came with it AND had such a laid back ambiance that we felt like we were sitting across from family. We loved it! The sushi chefs were great, full of personality and jokes, we got to talk about where they were from, etc. It was such a unique experience unlike all the other omakases we have been to.
I don't want the term "laid back" be taken in a wrong way, we still dressed very nicely, everyone was in suit pants, jacket, button down shit, dresses, etc. you still would want to dress to impress and the chefs were all still very formal and knowledgeable, but in their own unique way.
The quality of the ingredients were amazing. A favorite bite of the night was the bone marrow nigiri they made. I tried a new sake which ended up being a new favorite call "demon slayer." UNBELIEVABLE! Will definitely come back when they are back in the 8th floor hotel room to experience this as well!
