NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"The West Village and affordable sushi aren’t usually things we imagine existing in the same universe, but this Aussie-style sushi spot might yet prove us wrong. Their Instagram bio promises “really good hand rolls, no trust fund required”, and that feels like something we might be able to get behind. This passion project is now open, and they're offering one roll for $5, two for $10, and three for $12—and there’s also yuzu lemonade. " - Will Hartman, Willa Moore

Sushi Counter Review - West Village - New York - The Infatuation

"It’s likely you’ve never heard of Australian sushi. We hadn’t either, but then we learned about Sushi Counter, a closet-sized, counter-service Australian sushi spot in the West Village. The rolls are thick, four-inch cylinders, reminiscent of what you'd make if you had a sushi night at home, except—let's be honest—you probably don't have time for a sushi night at home. Did New York really need an Australian sushi spot? Probably not. But if you find yourself in the area and wanting a quick, fish-forward lunch, Sushi Counter’s rolls are $5 each, or three for $12. Grab a spicy tuna or salmon avocado roll, and make sure to get a loyalty card with your name on it. You’re four rolls away from free sushi. photo credit: Willa Moore" - Willa Moore

Google
This place came in highly recommended and lived up to the hype, went with a friend, we each got the 3 roll deal and I got a miso soup. It was all great, the guy who helped us was really nice and engaging, we got a little loyalty card that we’ll sure fill up! Great price point for NYC.

I love stopping by and grabbing a quick bite. I always get the three rolls which is so affordable for the quality. This time I got the Salmon, Spicy Shrimp and Tempura Shrimp. I didn’t need to use any soy sauce since everything was seasoned well (esp the Spicy Shrimp and Tempura Shrimp). There’s no tables inside since it’s meant to be for takeout but there is a small seating area that probably fits two people near the window. Definitely recommend!

Google
Overall rating: 4.6 Price: $13.06 I came to visit after seeing a video that they had really affordable and filling sushi. I got the spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura and special roll. I didn’t realize it was run by Australians which felt very unique. I read somewhere that the sushi is Australian-style which I’m not sure what that means exactly. I wish I ate at the place because I tried to eat on the go & my hands were freeeezzing. Eventhough the place was cute, the staff was friendly- I didn’t love the food. I don’t like spicy mayo a lot & it seems like they put it in everything. That said, I overheard someone mentioned the spam version & the staff said it was a seasonal item. So I now want to come back when it’s in season to try it!

Google
i was deeply surprised at how easy & delicious the sushi rolls were! spicy shrimp + salmon + spicy tuna were great!

Google
This place has been a revelation. Fresh, healthy and quick. I love grabbing it to go for my lunch as a busy home health provider. The spicy salmon and spicy tuna are to die for, and I love being surprised by the special rolls. Just an absolute gem.

Google
Absolutely delicious. I started coming here when I moved to NYC as it is the closest and most affordable place near me. It's great to grab some roles while I'm on my way home from work :)

Google
Love this place and I eat here all the time. For those that know Curb Your Enthusiasm however it is the epitome of the lady asking for ice cream samples when there is a line out the door lol but that's not the establishments fault.

Google
super cute little sushi spot!! the sweet chili mayo paired so well with the hand rolls

Yelp
Food was amazing! In total tasted the spicy salmon, volcano, and teriyaki chicken roll plus the spicy mayo sauce. I LOVED the spicy salmon and volcano roll. I 10/10 would recommend them to anyone. The teriyaki chicken roll was okay to me. I would not get it again, but I could understand why people would like it. It was a cute, tiny store with a couple tables to eat on outside.

Yelp
So fun that there is an Australian sushi place in NYC! I love Japanese sushi but I admit that it's easier to eat sushi rolls when it's not cut. The 3 rolls for $12 is a decent price. While the quality of the fish is just okay, it's a quick and cheap spot when you need a light meal. They also give you these cute soy sauce fish bottles. The shop is really small, not really any place to eat inside, so be prepared to takeaway.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place for affordable sushi rolls! 3 for $12 is an unmissable deal. The spicy salmon is my favorite followed by the volcano roll. Know that there is no place to sit inside. Would recommend walking over to the west side highway and eating on a bench there if the weather is nice.

Yelp
Tiny Australian sushi takeaway spot with tasty maki rolls and cute fish soy sauce dispensers! I got a pack of 3 for $12 and tried the salmon, spicy tuna, and shrimp tempura. All were tasty! Service is friendly and fast. Overall a nice quick grab-and-go option in west village if you're wanting sushi.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious Australian sushi! Quick, cheap, and tasty. 3 rolls for 12$ is pretty hard to beat! Tried the salmon roll, spicy tuna, and the shrimp tempura rolls! My favorite was the spicy tuna, followed by the salmon roll. Tempura was a bit soggy from sitting in the rice, but I was kind of expecting this. Flavor-wise still good. I love the little fish soy sauce squeeze bottles-- so cute! Will definitely be returning!

Yelp
I saw this place on TikTok and it was surprisingly not crowded even on a Saturday afternoon when I went. I ordered three sushi rolls - shrimp tempura, salmon, and spicy tuna. The rolls were very fresh plus a new batch of shrimp tempura rolls just came out as well. I really liked the spicy tuna and the shrimp tempura. The rolls were a good size and very easy to eat in a park or on the go. The staff were very friendly and fast. There's not much seating, just two outdoor tables but we ate it in a park on a nice day. I would definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
What a hidden gem. The place is quite small and there was a line but it's such great quality susespecially for the price. I'll be going here every time I'm in Manhattan
google avatar

Vanessa S.

Yelp
I really love this Australian hand roll place all the rolls they have are really tasty and you can get three for $12. My favorite are the miso eggplant and the spicy salmon. The service is extremely friendly all Australian and as for the ambience it's a small takeaway place, so great to grab on the good.

Yelp
Perfect spot to cure my cravings. I ordered the 3 rolls for $12 and got the spicy tuna, salmon and spicy shrimp. Everything was so good and light. Loved how the soy sauce came in a small plastic fish shaped bottle. This place is grab and go place. Store is small with only one table.
google avatar

Udochi M.

Yelp
Stumbled on sushi counter! Such a great deal! 3 rolls for 12 dollars! Like you can't beat that! My favorite was the tuna roll! I personally wasn't a fan of the rice they used, but I think it's a great concept and I would try again! Staff is super nice!
google avatar

Bella M.

Yelp
Misled by the great reviews, stopped here after a show nearby and was disappointed by these rolls. I love the concept but the execution was lacking.
google avatar

Ahiliya N.

Yelp
Amazing for what it was - Australian sushi! The rolls are uncut and 3 rolls for $12 is filling and affordable. I think they keep it clean and easy with the options, but I wish they had a bit more variety. The fish is also okay quality, but for the price, who can complain?
google avatar

Jillian B.

Yelp
Realistically would rate closer to a 4.5, but rounding up due to overall experience and value! Sushi Counter is a cute, convenient spot to quickly grab a bite to go. There isn't any seating inside, but there are some smaller tables outside. I came at an off-peak time so didn't have a wait, and had a lovely conversation with the woman working there, who walked me through all the options in order to help me make a decision on which rolls to go with. As others have mentioned, they have a deal of 3 handrolls for $12. I opted for the spicy shrimp, spicy tuna, and salmon avocado. Of the 3, I'd say my favorite was the salmon avocado, followed by the tuna and then the shrimp. Decent quality/ratio of fish to rice ESPECIALLY for the price. If in the area and in need of a quick bite, I'd come back, though wouldn't necessarily go out of my way if not in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Angel W.

Yelp
This is a great place to grab cheap and tasty sushi when you're in a rush. The sushi is already prepared and just needs to be placed in the bags. I got 3 rolls for $12 and I was in and out in less than 2 minutes. The sushi is meant to be taken to go so don't plan on dining inside. However, the neighborhood is beautiful and there are plenty of places to eat outside. If you stop by make sure to try the sweet chili mayo!
google avatar

Yelp
I rarely walk on the north side of Christopher Street. This is a neat little concept with a decent selection of fresh hand rolls. Ordering six of them came at a fairly reasonable price (probably $26 all in?). Not exactly the peak of satisfying, filling food, but pretty good and more than a novelty.
google avatar

Kenny B.

Yelp
We discovered this spot after seeing a video on TikTok, and we're so glad we did. They offer delicious, grab-and-go sushi, with a popular deal of 3 sushi rolls for $12. There are more than 8 different rolls to choose from. Although it's a small shop, the line moves fast, and the worker behind the counter was super friendly. Highly recommend checking it out!
google avatar

Facundo L.

Yelp
Great little spot with super fresh sushi, some unusual rolls that are Australian favorites. The staff has always been great, especially the owner who is a sweetheart. It's too small to really hang out inside and eat, but they have a few tables outside. Recommended.

Yelp
Amazing place! Great food! Love the items offered on menu. Can't wait to bring my family here.

Yelp
I stopped by for a light snack. Each roll is $5, and if you buy 3, there is a $1 discount each. I opted for two rolls since I wasn't feeling too hungry. The options are very simple, and the ones that I tried were done very well. I would've liked it better if the rolls were made fresh, but they were still very good. The rice was a little bit hard and dry because it just stays out in the display case. It's hard to warm it up too because if they do, the shrimp loses it's crunch. The tempura shrimp was really good though. The batter was light, and the shrimp tasted fresh. I loved the mayo sauce that paired with it. The salmon avocado is a classic. I do question the safety of eating raw salmon that's been sitting out for who knows how long, but it tasted really good. I also didn't get sick after, so I think it's fine. It was soft, and the avocado was fresh. I really didn't need any soy sauce with either of the rolls. They do have packaged wasabi and ginger on the side too if you want it. Honestly a very good stop and go place if you're looking for something fast and simple. They do have seating if you want to stay, but it seems like most people take out.

Yelp
convenient in every way. tbh, I was looking for a palette cleanser cuz I was doing a pizza crawl. Saw a couple eating the rolls and they pointed me to sushi counter. Grabbed a salmon to togo and it was simple and tasty! They give wasabi, soy sauce, and ginger. The perfect package for those on the go craving sushi!

Yelp
These Aussie-style hand rolls are a must-try!!! I recommend ordering the spicy tuna, salmon & avocado, and tempura shrimp. I wondered what makes an Aussie-style hand roll differ from American style sushi. Personally I think it's the sauce and rice because when trying the tempura shrimp there was slight sweetness which differs from other tempura shrimp. I loved it and have been making few trips there. These are small notes for those who will try it as a first timer. I recommend coming early because a line will form before opening hours and sometimes they will briefly close to make another batch of hand rolls. Overall amazing spot that is a cute hole in the wall with two tables for outdoor seating and window seating inside. The owner is super kind and thankful to everyone who orders so show support for this spot

Yelp
Some of the best counter service I've ever experienced in New York. The woman who took and bagged my order was very warm and helpful. The food is really really good. I haven't had hand rolls this good from a grab-and-go place in my recollection. They had a really nice bite to them and the rice wasn't dry at all. The filling was very fresh and flavorful. My favorite had to be the shrimp! However, I enjoyed the variety I got with my order. The soy sauce is very conveniently packaged in a cute little fish bottle which makes it easy to pour onto your rolls between bites. Definitely only needed one for my three rolls cus they were so flavorful even without. The place itself is tiny but really cute. There are some places to sit. Definitely would consider sitting next time if I wasn't in a bit of a rush! Have been looking forward to eating here for a while and it exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be back again soon! Would suggest getting the three rolls for $12! Perfect amount of food.

Yelp
I will not be having traditional sushi any longer but I will be having Aussie style sushi because it's so yum, fun, and incredibly convenient and portable! Came on a hot summer day with friends and I went for the $12 for the 3 rolls option! I got the veggie miso eggplant roll which was so flavorful, the special vegemite tuna roll, and the teriyaki chicken roll! All really fun and delicious it was honestly the perfect summer lunch. The Aussie innuendos are everywhere and they have a hand roll option for pretty much everyone! And it's all gluten free! Can't wait to come back and continue supporting!

Yelp
Wow Sushi Counter is truly amazing. I tried the spicy shrimp, spicy tuna and crab. 3 for $12 is such a steal!!!! The spicy tuna and spicy shrimp were my absolute favs. Both super fresh and perfect temperature of the seaweed and the rice. I want to come back and try every single one. My friend tried the spicy salmon, baked tuna and avocado /cucumber and he said each of them were a 10/10. The service was great and Nina was the absolute nicest. This spot is so special and if you come often and get a little punch card, they will take a picture of you and post it to their wall. Such a sweet touch and community feel. PLEASE COME TO BK!!!!!!!! HIGHLY recommend.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Quick and very friendly service! The volcano roll was my favorite. I wasn't sure if it would be enough, but 3 rolls was pretty filling. My only gripe is that I wish the yuzu lemonade was stronger, it felt a bit watered down to my taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Sushi Counter is an Australian style sushi place, which sounds absurd at first. As it turns out, similar to how America has the California roll, sushi was localized to Australia as well, and now an Australian restaurateur is bringing that to New York City. The shop is very small, with a display case of each type of sushi on offer (6 total if I recall correctly). Essentially, you walk in, pick out which rolls you want, they put them in a bag for you, and you're done. Walk outside to the couple of tables they have if you like, otherwise these are perfectly made to walk around eating. The rolls themselves are fairly good, and while not the peak of New York City sushi, still a great deal and worth trying out. I'm not rushing back as a Brooklyn resident, but if I find myself nearby and wanting a snack, Sushi Counter will be a top candidate.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Quick, easy spot to grab a snack or dinner! The eggplant one isn't my favorite but I like the rest.
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with sushi counter. I've been here several times and keep coming back for the yummy quick healthy sushi rolls. I recommend the spicy shrimp and miso eggplant. It is small and there is no seating inside, but they have two small tables for with two chairs each outside. I recommend this place for takeout. Service is fast and friendly. I look forward to coming back to try different flavors soon.

Gabi D.

Yelp
I had high expectations for fresh rolls given the chatter around this spot. Unfortunately, the rolls were not fresh and had a fishy after taste. I ordered the salmon teriyaki special, spicy tuna, and tempura. To no surprise the tempura was the best. The quality of the rolls were very average, below average. I will not be back.
google avatar

Caitlin L.

Yelp
Cool concept! I came to Sushi Counter because I saw their TikTok videos, and I was super excited to try their miso eggplant roll. Fast, efficient, conversational service. Tasty roll! The filling to rice ratio is just right, and the miso flavor really complimented the eggplant. This is a convenient to-go option for a healthy snack or meal. What a little treasure!
google avatar

Sara Y.

Yelp
I stopped by 1st time and a cashier was super friendly and nice. Although there were long line, he assisted me with smile. Shrimp Tempra rolls are so interested!!! They also sell store original tote bag. $15! I'll def come back. The store is cozy. 4 chairs and 2 tables are outside. it's a little bit hard to find. I was surprised I thought this store is from Japan.... I was told that Australian owner. Sushi roll is Futomaki. (It's more wide and long roll. Please see my picture) I highly recommended.
google avatar

Roma B.

Yelp
Found this place on tik tok and had to try it out! Love the concept, it's a grab and go sushi counter. They had a variety of hand rolls to pick from, only $4 each. Got 1 eggplant and 2 spicy salmon rolls. Their soy sauce is in mini fish shaped plastic to go bottles too. Hand rolls were fresh and tasty.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Surprisingly good! 4.5/5 Spicy Tuna - the tuna and avocado were fresh. unlike regular spicy tuna sauce, this reminds me of a Tabasco hot sauce flavor, some western twist. it worked well with the sushi roll. 4/5 Spicy Salmon - tastes as expected. the salmon is cooked and it wasn't dry. not outstanding but you can't go wrong with this 5/5 Shrimp Tempura - so delicious!!! it has a sweetened condensed milk sauce reminding me of honey walnut shrimp. love the crunchy tail and it is cooked perfectly. the fried flavor meshed well with the roll overall A $13.06 total for these 3 hand rolls isn't bad. I was decently full afterward and would love to come back.
google avatar

Juliana T.

Yelp
The sushi here is better than I expected, but it was bc my expectations were quite low. $12 for 3 rolls, which was a decent deal. Each sushi roll is shorter than your average; if you cut them up into maki pieces, you'd probably get 5 or so pieces. The fillings are tasty, and some are pretty unique like eggplant! I tried the salmon + avo, chicken teriyaki, and cooked tuna (the last two were "Aussie classics". Every purchase comes with soy sauce, a small pouch of wasabi, and a small pouch of ginger. These additions were great, but very difficult to eat if you don't get one of the 3 sidewalk seats available. Finally, I really didn't like the service so much. The woman who rang us up seemed like she was in a bad mood, and really provided no customer service. We grabbed our food and left. Overall a good spot for a quick sushi snack, but not worth going out of your way for.

Margaux N.

Yelp
Great sushi deal in the west village!! And also a great grab and go option for anyone gluten free (they even asked if it was celiac or a preference!) which can be rare in the city. The service was exceptionally friendly, informative, and efficient. Limited seating, only two tables, but I went during lunch hour on a weekday and was able to snag one of the tables outside.
google avatar

Citlali A.

Yelp
Two thumbs up for me. You need to know what this is, and that is not a super fancy sushi place, but a cozy, Australian style, grab and go hand roll spot. The salmon I had tasted perfectly good, but this isn't just a fish spot. I tried the teriyaki chicken cucumber roll, the salmon avo, and the spicy shrimp. All three were seasoned surprisingly well, and didn't even need additional soy. The rolls are filling, but fresh and don't feel overly heavy. Each type of roll seems very well balanced between umami and freshness, all at a great price. I can't wait to stop in on a hot summer day. The owner working behind the counter was very friendly and clearly involved with the success of her shop.
google avatar

Morgan H.

Yelp
Everything was PERFECT i got I roll and it came pretty quick also keeping in mind how busy it was. The ambiance was on point. And the workers were SO kind and funny and respectful I really loved it here will come back!!!
google avatar

Tina C.

Yelp
Cute yummy place to stop in for some casual australian sushi! The owner was SO nice & took her time helping you even though there was a line up outside the shop. I will say...if you think it will taste like a regular sushi, it's def different! Which makes sense to me bc the rolls are $12 for 3. I got the salmon avocado 3/5, cooked tuna (good as long as you like tuna fish), spicy tuna 3/5. Overall really fun to try!
google avatar

Marianne F.

Yelp
A quick and easy grab-n-go lunch. Plenty of flavors, fresh fish and fillings, yummy drinks to choose from, friendly service.
google avatar

Avron B.

Yelp
Friendly service, creative and fresh take on "Australian" style sushi. Fast and convenient for a light take out dinner or snack on the hoof.
google avatar

Sonja K.

Yelp
Loved this spot, a perfect snack while you're on the go. I really enjoyed all the rolls I got. It's an Australian style sushi place so wanted to try their "most popular" chicken teriyaki, along with spicy tuna and salmon avocado. Chicken was different but it glad I tried, it's a little sweet so with soy sauce it was perf. Spicy tuna was my fav, actually had a kick. And salmon avo was good and basic. I will be back when I'm around the area looking for snack on the go. Easy to eat and it's grab and go. Also people that work here are so sweet!

Adi Z.

Yelp
Rolls were not good and I've seen them leave the sushi out when the place was closed.
google avatar

Ainsley F.

Yelp
I love sushi counter!!! I'm visiting and have already eaten here twice with my friends who live locally. Such delicious and simple options, always hits the spot!
google avatar

Ann P.

Yelp
Not bad sushi for the price I guess, but it was very non fresh tasting. Not in a way that seemed unhealthy but the rice in particular was clearly made hours earlier. Maybe more of a comment on the concept than the food but it wasn't for me!
google avatar

Jenn V.

Yelp
overpriced for mid white people sushi that's way too small. three 4-inch rolls for $12...
google avatar

Zoe K.

Yelp
Australian style sushi rolls that are so fresh and delicious. The owner is super friendly and so are her other staff. We had one of every roll. I liked the miso eggplant one a lot and my husband's favorite was the salmon avocado. I was really impressed with the good pricing. There are a couple table outside to eat at. They had these cute and good ginger packets and little soy sauce fish that were easy to use. The place is busy but always in stock. There is a loyalty card and we can't wait to return.
google avatar

Chelsea P.

Yelp
So so so Good!!! The cooked tuna was amazing! Would get more next time! The shrimp tempura one looked amazing too

Cara R.

Yelp
These rolls just make me so happy !!!! I also absolutely love how nice and hospitable the front desk worker is whenever I stop in. Highly recommend for a tasty quick bite
