The 20 Best Places For Cheap Sushi In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Sasabune is one of the bigger names in high-end sushi around LA, but lurking in its shadows is Sushi Don, its much more casual kid sibling serving affordable sushi and donburi in the Valley. The menu at this compact counter-service spot is concise and doesn't feature anything you haven't seen before, but our order is always the Combo A: a full donburi rice bowl (get the tuna mix), five tasty pieces of nigiri, plus miso soup or salad for $23." - garrett snyder, cathy park, brant cox, jess basser sanders

Sushi Don Sasabune Review - Studio City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Sasabune is one of the bigger names in high-end sushi in Los Angeles, but lurking in its shadows is Sushi Don, its affordable sushi/donburi spot in the Valley. I’ve lived across the street from this sushi restaurant for 12 years and never ate there. I finally found my way there and it was something out of a movie! Just this little Hideaway with five tables and chairs with delicious sushi. Totally relaxed with cool vibes and music played at a low volume. Loved love loved it!

Google
Always fresh. Always pleasant. Always clean. Great take out. Reasonable price for fish as good as an top notch fancy restaurant. Not the widest selection but everything is always good.

Google
The fish was fresh, and everything I ate was really good! That being said, I felt the prices were a little steep. I spent $18.99 plus tax and tip on Combo B--miso soup, a hand roll and five pieces of sushi--and I was still hungry when I left. Also just a heads up there is no public restroom.

Google
Sushi Don Sananami Express truly exceeded my expectations! I recently had the pleasure of dining at this fantastic establishment, and it was an unforgettable experience. I started with the 5-piece sushi assortment featuring tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and albacore, and I must say, the freshness and quality of the fish were outstanding. Each piece practically melted in my mouth, showcasing the chef's skill and dedication to perfection. But the sushi roll stole the show! It was a symphony of flavors and textures, beautifully presented and bursting with creativity. The combination of ingredients was nothing short of brilliant, and every bite was a delightful surprise. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a casual meal or a special occasion. The staff was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable, making recommendations that perfectly complemented my meal. Overall, Sushi Don Sananami Express is a hidden gem that deserves recognition. If you're a sushi lover like me, this is a must-visit. I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu. Kudos to the talented chefs and staff for an unforgettable dining experience

Google
A fantastically hidden gem in a random strip mall, this place is awesome! The fish is always so fresh and tender. You get the quality of Sugarfish, but a casual ambience at a reasonable price. I love getting the Combo B with the Salmon Skin cut roll. And it comes with Miso soup! Really quick and friendly service as well. :)

Google
I ordered 3 party platters for a small bday party. Two mixed platters and one all-rolls. The sushi was fresh, and the presentation was neat and colorful. Every piece was eaten. Will definitely order from them again.

Google
As others have stated, be aware that they will charge you a sneaky 10% packaging fee on your to go order! First time I have seen a restaurant do this, like are you serious? In addition I am vegetarian, ordered the udon noodles with no meat, still charged me full price, will go to the countless other competitors on Ventura from now on!

Google
I asked for a tempora california roll and he gave me a california roll with rice crispys cereal on top and still over charged me. Place sucks n not recommend

Yelp
I've known the owner for over 20 years. I've seen the prices increase over but the food is always great!

Lori R.

Yelp
Been coming here for years but the past few times the quality has been lacking. Today I ordered and they are clearly using leftover rice from the weekend as it was gummy and cold. They also charged me $1 because on the 5 piece sushi I asked for no salmon but said they could sub any other fish. Odd because it wasn't an upgrade.

Yelp
I don't eat fish but I am crazy for avocado rolls! The craving hit right as I was driving by Sushi Don- it was fate. I got two avocado rolls and some edamame. The portions were great, I got two meals out of my order. Love that! The sushi was real good. Tasted very fresh and came with soy sauce and wasabi, but no ginger. The edamame wasn't as fresh, falling apart and such, but still tasted alright. My order was ready literally within minutes after ordering and the staff were friendly. The togo packaging was super cute too! Overall a great and delicious experience. I'll be back!

Yelp
Just ok. Subpar. They are ridiculously overpriced for what you get! Sushi was very bland and barely called sushi. We purchased the $39 platter. It was pathetic. And when you eat in, they are super cheap with the plates. I'm pretty sure they are using the foam ones from 99 cent stores! Won't be coming back here as it's really not worth it. At all.

Greg L.

Yelp
I have been coming here for 15 years at least. As previous reviews have noted there prices have indeed gotten out of hand. I decided to put that aside and come in today for a quick meal. Predictably it was literally empty. I asked one question about the menu and the gentleman that was working was condescending and beyond rude. Asking me if I know the difference between nigiri and sashimi. I was asking where the hand roll menu was. Unbelievable. He just lost his only sale of the day. It pains me to write bad reviews, but when it's required I feel I must.

Yelp
Tiny place on Laurel canyon I've come to fall in love with after years of dealing with expensive sushi inconsistencies with freshness elsewhere. Tiny little place that serves perfect ratio buttery fish and rice. Haven't had better yellowtail in years. And I eat sushi almost weekly. I CAN COMPARE the buttery freshness to the expensive "trust me" I often eat at Sugarfish. Except you order what you crave and as much ponzu as you wish. Fresh fresh and consistent. Party plates are a hit. Order more because they will fly off the platter.

Yelp
Sad to say, but shrinkflation has arrived at Sushi Don. Not only have prices gone up quite a bit after Covid, but the size of their bowls and pieces of sushi have shrunk to miniature proportions. Each sushi roll in my combo A was the size of a pinky finger. The bowl had pathetically small pieces of fish as well. Seriously? After eating here for many years (starting when combo A was well under $20 and the portions were normal) I can no longer go out of my way to bring my family here. I can stomach higher prices, since everyone is jacking-up their prices, but I cannot accept both higher prices AND much smaller portions.
google avatar

Hali Y.

Yelp
Spicy tuna roll and crab roll, 2 basic rolls. Rice is dry and hard, and color of tuna is really strange, almost pink. Found a crab shell in the crab roll. $9 each, won't be coming back.

Yelp
I recently had lunch at Sushi Don in Valley Village for two consecutive days, and I was quite satisfied with my experience. The sushi was good, and the prices were reasonable, offering great value for money. I would consider returning to Sushi Don in the future.

Leah P.

Yelp
This is the best neighborhood sushi restaurant! I've lived in the area for years and always drove by, I finally went and can't stop! The manager and staff are kind and prepare your order with care. The yellowtail belly and special albacore sashimi are AMAZING, some of the best crispy rice spicy tuna I've had, and it's a nice, small, casual sushi spot.

Monique F.

Yelp
Love this place :) the sushi is high quality and the owner is an awesome chef. I first learned about this place from their other location , so happy this is near me since I moved. Salmon belly is soooo yummy. Grateful to have high quality available in this humble place. Many people do carry out orders which is nice because I like places that I don't have to wait in line forever to sit for good food :) Enjoy!

Yelp
With their Sasabune connection, I expected Sushi Don to be something special. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The strip mall location is nothing to write home about, but plenty of unassuming places have awesome sushi in LA. For the prices, I expected a lot better experience. I ordered four rolls, but one that I ordered was wrong (I ordered Salmon Skin Roll, but they sent baked salmon instead). It was fine, but again, I expected more. Portions were fine, but none of the rolls were cut evenly, we were served in disposable trays, even though we were dining in. If the price was half of what it is, I would come back, but the experience wasn't worth splurging on, when there are so many good inexpensive places close by.

Yelp
Super unimpressed with Sushi Don and I am not surprised after having a 2 star lunch at the main sushi restaurant on Riverside Drive in Studio City-ish. This is strictly fast food sushi and the portions are very small and it's not inexpensive. It was formerly owned by a better sushi chain (Sushi Sasabune) so don't be misled. My bestie and I shared the sushi combo and miso soup. 2 stars because we lived to tell the tale.
google avatar

Nathan G.

Yelp
During Covid, this has been my go to cheap sushi fix. For $25 out the door, you can get a nice set dinner with a sashimi rice bowl, five piece assortment, and miso, all packed and ready when you arrive. Fish is flavorful and everything hits the spot, though if you are looking for creativity or high end items, look elsewhere. It's a big step up over supermarket sushi at the same price.
google avatar

Winnie L.

Yelp
It is in a strip mall. The restaurant inside is very basic. I got the rainbow roll and a yellowtail sushi. The rainbow was like $18. There were quite a bit of avocado on the top. I expected to have more fish for how much I paid.
google avatar

Steph S.

Yelp
The food was super good. I highly recommend. Street parking is hit or miss so keep that in mind.

Yelp
Quick and simple update review. I was in the neighborhood so decided to grab a quick sushi fix at Sushi Don. I've been here a serval times but haven't been back for awhile. I'm not sure if the owner have changed but the sushi have certainly did. ( Still the same owner who run Sasabune) FOOD: I ordered the combo A. That comes with a bowl of any fish you choose( I got the tuna) and five pcs of nigiri. First of let's talk about tuna don bowl. This was one pathetic tuna bowl. How cheap do you have to be to serve paper thin tuna sashimi. You can actually see through the tuna so basically this was just a bowl of rice. Second your nigiri was a joke as well. All rice and paper thin cuts of fish once again. I'm not that type of person that likes to give negative reviews, but if you're charging $17 for mostly all rice. Yes you deserve a bad review. Sorry Sushi Don.

Yelp
Loved this hidden gem! The sushi was fresh and delicious. I will definitively be back and recommend 5/5.

Joan H.

Yelp
I love their food! I live within walking distance and I always pick it up. They offer a discount too every time you order! I'm

Yelp
How does this place even have 4 stars? This has to be the worst restaurant ive ever gotten food from. This was beyond disappointing. First off, the eel from eel donburi taste REALLY fishy and disgusting. I almost yacked. The chirashi bowl is not what I expected. Thin pieces of fish .. what they call sashimi.. and like 4 pieces of it with a whole ton of rice .. i didnt even eat any of it and it all went in the trash because you can tell what type of quality food this is. If i could, i would give this place ZERO stars. Too bad there's no option for that. During covid times, i really try to order out and help out these shops but if their quality and service is like this, they shouldn't even be in business. I really hope i dont get sick from the few bites i had from this place
google avatar

SynCity P.

Yelp
It's a fast food style and quality restaurant. If you want to enjoy the food, take out or find another one. Plus, they don't have bathroom for the customers.

Anais H.

Yelp
Was dying for food on the way to work and popped into this place out of convenience. Let me just say -- some of the best quality sushi I've ever had. Salmon is like butter and their chicken karaage is crispy and delicious. Loveeeeee it here
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
There's no way you'll find better quality for the price in la. Quality of fish is on par with the places you'd be spending major dollar on anywhere else. The party tray is our go to with sushi combo b but honestly I'd rather do two trays because debauchery.
google avatar

Stella L.

Yelp
For $14, I expected more than a pile of lettuce for my sashimi salad. It looked like it was about 3oz or less. I took a look at the other pics of the sashimi salads on this page and laughed. DON'T let the close up pics of the salads fool you! The slices of sashimi were actually very thin, small slices, but anything up close in a photo looks big. I haven't tried much of their other food, so can't comment on that. I actually came here years ago and ordered the same thing, and got the same results. However, I wanted to give this place another try. Guess some things never change.
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
So my sister has been raving about this place for years, so here I am. Located in a large strip mall on the corner of Laurel Canyon and Riverside Dr. Parking is a nightmare. There are many great businesses, so it's always jammed. But once you get that spot, you're in! They have a large selection & daily specials. You order at the counter. Then sit down and they'll bring your order to the table when it's ready. The staff was extremely friendly. Our rolls came out in a timely manner. We had blue crab rolls and California rolls. The price was reasonable and the rolls were delicious! It was a quick stop but I'm impressed. We will be back when we have a little more time to try a variety. Bonus: they are open all day, unlike many Japanese restaurants that close from 2-5.
google avatar

Naomi K.

Yelp
sushi is always fresh and perfectly prepared. ideal family spot.
google avatar

Ronna B.

Yelp
We came here as a last-minute, quick stop decision on the way to the movies. I didn't realize their menu doesn't have a more robust selection of rolls so I hoped that what they do offer is really good. The servers are really nice and the guy at the counter told me straight up they just have a basic, simple menu. I ordered Combo A with Salmon Donburi and 5 pieces of nigiri. I also got a baked lobster handroll. I was pleasantly surprised by this little joint. Everything was really good and the fish is really fresh. Definitely would come back and recommend!

Gus R.

Yelp
Amazing sushi. Always the same quality. They have one of the best spicy tuna in town, and probably the best, freshest , tasty Ikura (salmon egg) sushi in the whole Los Angeles area. And the portions and the price is very convenient and proper. I eat there every time I am in the area. One of the best sushi places you can find.
google avatar

Emile O.

Yelp
I made a stop at the UPS store and noticed this place so I decided to check it out, as soon as I walked in I noticed how pricey their items were for what it was. I took a risk and ordered a bowl and when I got home to eat it I was surprised it was a huge bowl of rice and very few, thin pieces of salmon. Mediocre at best. Definitely not worth the price.
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
Authentic Japanese speaking employees and sushi chefs here. Very friendly even though I had a strange alteration (due to me being pregnant). The price is normal, not super cheap. It's a casual comfortable place inside with around 6 two tops and 2 four tops. I enjoyed the crispy rice with unagi (surcharge for this) but the salmon hand roll was just ok. The DRAGON ROLL was delicious!
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
I just moved into my new place and went exploring in the area. Found this gem tucked into a strip mall no more then a quarter mile away! A very friendly young man was working at the cash register. He recommended the Combination B. 5 pieces of sushi, 1 hand roll, and a bowl of miso soup. All of that was $14, and it was all VERY fresh and good. I got the blue crab hand roll expecting it to be sub par. This is based on the fact I have paid $14 for JUST a hand roll before. Do not let the price fool you - this hand roll is on point! The salmon sushi was probably my favorite bite of the meal. The miso soup was killer. I can't wait to come back here.
google avatar

RJ I.

Yelp
Been going here for many years Always fresh and good! It's a bit pricey for lunch but worth it! Enjoy!

Mike H.

Yelp
I agree with most of the recent not-so-positive reviews. Quality of fish has declined (also found a bone and scale) and the rice is very bland. Let's hope some of the recent reviews initiates some changes.

Nik N.

Yelp
I have finally found the worst sushi restaurant in Los Angeles and this is it. Both quality and service are below average . How can you make a bad California roll ? It's safe to say I will not be back !
google avatar

Aimy N.

Yelp
Combo B was fresh. But $7 for the smallest two pieces of crispy rice I've ever seen! They were a bit stale too. If that's their portion, at least give another piece.
google avatar

Peter L.

Yelp
Best sushi for the price! Great service and friendly staff. Use their online ordering its faster and cheaper than any of the pick up services plus you get cash back rewards. I really enjoyed the extra $2 off my order.
google avatar

Mabelle T.

Yelp
With the recommendation of a friend, got some affordable grub here at Sushi Don. don't confuse this place for Sushi Dan - they're not even related, more like cousins.. Anyway, staff is super friendly and fatally relatable, giving that personal feel as opposed to that non-welcoming corporate environment. Such an affordable local sushi fix for your sushi cravings conveniently located off the 101:)
google avatar

Didier C.

Yelp
Their online ordering isn't accurate and we didn't get what we ordered. The online system describes the caterpillar roll as a California roll topped with avocado (see screenshot), but instead it was an eel roll with avocado. I was told to get a refund through the Eat24 when I called. I wouldn't recommend this place for takeout orders.
google avatar

Micki B.

Yelp
I have driven by Sushi Don a LOT and was curious about what it's like. Sushi joints pop up like Starbucks chains, so finding the gems can be a daunting task. But I believe that donburi is a super unappreciated dish, so I've been on the hunt for a great place. And, I was really impressed by Sushi Don! Sushi Don is small, but feels intimate. I rarely put money in cash tip jars and I couldn't help myself here. The menu is small as well - they know they're good at fish and donburi so they really stick to their comfort zone. :) I got the combo where you get 5 pieces of sushi, a bowl and a soup or salad for around $16 before tax. Not only is that a steal, but everything was delicious. The fish was so good, it had that buttery consistency and practically melted in my mouth. I wish I could have savored that meal for DAYS. And that, dear Yelpers, is not something you can find at any sushi spot. I would recommend coming here; they also have takeout. Can't wait to return and spread the word about Sushi Don!
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Good things come in small packages right? Well that quote definitely applies here cuz it is small. Don't know if it was mentioned in previous reviews but this is not your normal sushi spot where you continue to order things on the menu while you are dining, you know just in case you're still hungry. Instead place you order at the counter, pay, and take a seat. Philip G. and I each got our own Combo B $11.95 - Salmon Skin Handroll, miso soup, 1pc Tuna, Yellowtail, Salmon, 2pc Albacore, and ordered a blue crab roll to share. It kinda felt a little weird paying that much at a spot set up like this, but the quality of the fish & crab we tried was pretty good. Seems like this is more of a to-go place just because the store itelf is really small and they don't have bathrooms for patrons. I did noticed that their rice was a little warm which you don't get at many sushi spots, only some of the pricier/nicer places do this. And after Philip g. raved at how much better it was to have sushi on top of warmed rice I knew I needed to try it for myself, which led us to Sushi Don. If you're in the area check them out, but don't come in with 15+ people because the tables are really small and if you do, you'll be talking about half if not all of the tables. *Make sure to check their website for their specials and combos, it'll help your wallet!
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
So why exactly do so many people go here? There are many better (and cheaper) options in the valley. I came here for lunch and paid 17 dollars for 5 small pieces of sushi, a cut roll and a salad. The salad was just some chopped up lettuce with a bland tasting dressing. The cut roll was one of the worst looking cut rolls i've ever seen. It was a roll only by the stretch of the imagination. Hastily thrown together, rice and filling all over the place. Finally the sushi which was again, small but one of the pieces of tuna was extremely fishy smelling. My stomach is still turning. So I'll ask again, why do you all go here? There is no reason for anyone to come here more than once. Trust me, go somewhere else.
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
I work on the weekends at a place down the street from Sushi Don, and I look forward to eating here for lunch everytime I have a shift! There's something so simplistically delicious about the donburi bowls. I often get half/half of spicy tuna and spicy salmon, and it's always so satisfying. The crispy rice is very popular, and is definitely tasty, but please do your taste buds a favor and get the donburi!! Also the staff is also so pleasant and prompt :). Zero complaints from me except the fact that they open at 12 noon and I usually get hungry around 11:00am and have to wait :P
google avatar

Kelsey G.

Yelp
Best fast sushi in the valley. High quality and affordable. I love their blue crab California roll. Staff is always very friendly too.

Lilly S.

Yelp
It was my birthday. I couldn't believe when my husband picked up my mixed donburi. There were tiny six slices of fish. Like paper. With rice and there were pickles and ginger and three sticks of cucumber. Who wants to eat cucumber? No taste. The fish wasn't good at all and contained no solid pieces. I'm Japanese and I couldn't believe that they are serving their signature donburi like this. I would never go back here. The quality is terrible and made with no love. Messy and tasteless. You don't get what you pay for. Go to a Japanese market in Santa Monica. It's better. The fish is more fresh and much better.
google avatar

James Y.

Yelp
I, as I usually do, used Yelp to find this place. I went in around 1:30pm on a hot Thursday afternoon. It is sort of a fast food type location where you go up to the counter and place your order. I ordered the combo A, which is a selection of a sushi bowl, 5 pieces of nigiri, and salad or miso soup. I picked the salmon bowl and salad. The salmon bowl was sushi rice, with salmon pieces, pickled vegetables, cucumber, and ginger. What I really liked was the salmon pieces were cut bite size. The nigiri had tuna, salmon, albacore, and a couple of other pieces. I have to say this place is sushi bar quality in a fast food setting, very nice. They have a sit down location a few blocks. I live in Pasadena so not right down the street, otherwise, I would go there weekly.
google avatar

Rhoderick S.

Yelp
Im not gonna say too much so it stays a hidden gem. Quality of fish - A+ Service - A+ Price - A+ Parking - A+ We will be back on a regular basis.
google avatar

Danielle K.

Yelp
A fantastically hidden gem in a random strip mall, this place is awesome! The fish is always so fresh and tender. You get the quality of Sugarfish, but a casual ambience at a reasonable price. I love getting the Combo B with the Salmon Skin cut roll. And it comes with Miso soup! Really quick and friendly service as well. :)

Francois B.

Yelp
I had a combination tray at a friends house a few days ago and it was pretty good, so yesterday when i passed by Sushi Don i ordered one. It was not great the fish tasted and looked like left over from the previous day. It might have been bad luck but i won't be back. To claim the Sasabune heritage is extremely misleading. I've had Sasabune sushi many times since they were on Sawtelle . Nothing remotely close
google avatar

Lo C.

Yelp
Disapponited. I should have gone to Sugarfish instead or even Whole Foods. Sashimi was small pieces and not worth the purchase. It looked nothing like the photos. I called the restuarant and they stated that the fish were cut small so it's easier to eat. Makes no sense, unless you are a child. I'm going to make up for that bad sushi experience and go to Ahi sushi or Sugarfish tonight. I'd rather pay more for good sushi.
