Many families have traditions. Our family has had a new years eve tradition for about six years now, and it's one of my favorites. This tradition is called "Eating The Best Sushi In Kansas City to Welcome the New Year".
Every year, this tradition takes place at one restaurant alone: Sushi Haru.
Don't get me wrong - all time of year is a good time to enjoy The Best Sushi in Kansas City, which this is.
Since moving to Kansas City, we've been to Sushi Haru no less than 400 times. I'm sure. I've counted.
We've tried nearly every maki roll on the menu, and they're all aces. Our entire favorites list is too long for such a post, but our top five are, in no particular order: Cherry Blossom, Boss Roll, Shaggy Dog, Salmon Special Roll, and White Dragon Roll. And the Dynamite Roll. And the Pretty Woman roll. And the MachuPichu roll. You get the point. But seriously, you could close your eyes and point to random food on the menu and not be disappointed.
The sushi is like artwork on a plate. The guys at the sushi bar are black-belt fresh-fish pros. Order enough, and you'll get your eats served on a fun, wooden ship.
Yes, it's in a strip mall. Yes, that's patio furniture you're sitting at. And yes, most of the time the music leaves something to be desired. But, if you go to a sushi restaurant for good sushi, then this is the only place you go in The City of Fountains. Either side of State Line.
