Yelp
Whenever the boy and I go to a concert at The Forum, our tradition over the last three years has been to hit Sushi Kura for dinner.
The first time was three years ago when I was dragged to go see "Dude Perfect" and let me tell you, the dinner was definitely the highlight for me. The boy absolutely loved the show (along with thousands of full out screaming little kids) but it was just a chaotic and curious mess of everyone shooting baskets, arrows, footballs, making favorite frozen yogurt and telling us which types of chips they all prefer.
The second time was when I won Billie Eilish tickets on the radio and that show (still with thousands of blood curdling screaming girls mostly) was actually a whole lot better which was a surprise to me because I'm not really an Eilish fan. She is definitely talented.
The third time was last night before the Puddles Pity Party/Weird Al Yankovic concert my son has been absolutely dying to go see. He is a huge Weird Al fan and I've listened to him since I was a kid...and Puddles was absolutely awesome and hilarious, too! You've got to check out his concert stuff with the videos.
Anyway.......we love sushi and found SUSHI KURA on Yelp three years ago and I'm sorry I haven't written a review earlier because the sushi and portions are great!
We ordered:
Unagi (Fresh Water Eel) x 2: $13.80
Yellow Tail Belly Sushi x 2: ($15.00)
Salmon Belly Sushi x 2: $13.80
Iron Monkey Roll: $23.99 (Baked Lobster & Scallop on a Tempura California Roll)
Golden Gate Roll: $16.95 (Inside: Salmon, Mango, Avocado / Outside: Mango, Salmon)
Baja Yellowtail Roll: $17.55 (Spicy Yellowtail, Avocado, Seared Yellowtail, Jalapeno)
Total: $114.01 (including a 3% credit card fee) + tip
The Yellowtail and Salmon came out first and the cuts of fish were very generous considering other sushi bars and the Sushi Chef always includes a few extra pieces of sashimi on the plate which is a really nice touch. The fish was incredible and I know my sushi from the best, high-end to the worst.
The Unagi (Eel) was also exceptional.
I love and always order the Baja Yellowtail and I really really enjoyed the Golden Gate. I had forgotten how much I like that roll and if the mango scares you, Chef slices it so thin that it isn't overbearing. You definitely taste the fish as well. This roll also comes with two wonderful dipping sauces, a really delicious and sweet mango puree and a green cilantro (?) sauce. Both were fantastic but I kept going with the green sauce.
I decided to step up for the more expensive Iron Monkey Roll and it was very good, too, with a couple sweet sauces on it, with ample lobster and scallops.
The portions of fish in the rolls were like the sushi, very ample.
I do think the boy tricked me into ordering one more roll this time and we were absolutely stuffed. Next time we're in the area, I'd limit it to the three orders of sushi and 2 rolls.
The restaurant itself is small but cozy and I like the Japanese comic book (?) or ads that adorn the walls, including in the bathroom.
They have eliminated table-side ordering now to save on staffing costs. And there is a self-service water, ginger, wasabi and utensil station. Very smart and I like being able to get more wasabi and ginger if need be. You order at the bar and the waitress brings your food out as it's ready.
I believe most order takeout here so the service for us was great, friendly and swift.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND if you are in the area or just off the plane at LAX and jonesing for very good and reasonably priced sushi.
