"Sushi delivery can be a gamble when you’re dealing with a mystery human handing your raw fish after an undisclosed period of time since it was made. But Sushi Maki runs a serious takeout operation. The rolls and nigiri are wrapped tightly, seared things are still warm from being torched, and the condiments come in a separate container in case you despise pickled ginger and can’t let it touch your salmon. You’re in good hands ordering this for your Friday movie marathon. photo credit: Erin Lodi" - Aimee Rizzo

trust the reviews and go here!! tiny hole in the wall spot, not even room to wait inside. but so worth it. simple made to order rolls with incredibly fresh fish and so much love and care! i got a maki and 2 hand rolls, everything was perfect. have fun with your own combinations and eat good baby

Google
This is hands down the best sushi spot in all of Seattle. As an avid sushi lover and lifelong seattlite you will not find a more perfect sushi restaurant. It is owned by the sweetest people ever who make every time you order from them a wonderful experience. I would come just for them, but oh my goodness the quality fish they have is perfection. Its giving studio ghibli goodness but in real life. I don’t ever write reviews, I believe this may be the first. But it has been overdue for Sushi Maki. This wonderfully unassuming whole in the wall is some of the best food you will have in the city hands down. Will be a forever customer.

Google
TLDR: amazing quality sushi, kind staff, and good prices (compared to other sushi places). Highly recommend checking this cute hole-in-the-wall spot out if you are craving takeout sushi. 5 pieces sushi w/ roll ($17.50): 10/10 - this comes with salmon, shrimp, tuna, izumidai (tilapia), and albacore nigiri. Each nigiri was delicious, the rice of each was nicely seasoned. The fish itself tastes fresh and not overly fishy. You can choose the roll it comes with and the roll I chose was salmon cucumber which was also very tasty. The rice to fish ratio was perfect. Because it is a take out only restaurant, they give you the ginger and wasabi on the side (which I love since I hate when you bite into your roll not knowing there is a huge piece of wasabi underneath) and they give in my opinion the *best* soy sauce. It’s nicely salty and umami (not like those bad packs you usually get with takeout sushi). This small detail really elevated the experience for me! The staff working when I went were very helpful and kind. There was even a small waiting room so you didn’t have to wait in the cold. Will definitely be back and would 100% recommend to a friend!

Google
Tasty salmon sushi! I got the New York Roll and it was delicious. Miso Soup was very tasty as well. Slightly expensive but in line with Seattle prices. Would return!

Google
The best sushi on the hill is made by a 2 person, takeout only restaurant, who's philosophy is that only the best quality fish is worth using for the best sushi experience. Because of the small operation you're not paying for a large restaurant lease, big staff, alcohol license, etc . . . your money is going to the food quality and 15+ year experience of the lovely duo. This was the first sushi I had when I moved back to Seattle and after 2 years, I've yet to find a better spot.

Sabrina

Google
Absolutely delicious, and the owner was extremely kind 💕 some of the best sushi I have had here in Cap Hill!

Google
Always a delicious treat. The first time I came here the pair working were singing to each other, I knew I’d be coming back. Three years later and it’s still my favorite sushi spot, delicious miso, fresh fish, generous portions, all for an extremely reasonable price.

Megan Knox

Google
Newly reopened!! The sushi is fire with high quality and fresh fish, the owner is so kind, and the prices are very reasonable for the area. Best sushi in Cap Hill! Go support this small, local business!

Yelp
Just went by at 6:15pm on Thursday, right in the middle of their dinner open hours, but the lights were off, the door was locked, and no one was there. I was pretty bummed because I checked the hours and their online ordering was on. It seems as though this spot has changed their hours but it isn't reflected on the door or online.

Caroline W.

Yelp
4.5! What a pleasant surprise to wander into Sushi Maki for a bit of lunch. The reviews are correct that the portions are SO generous and that is not strictly rice, but all of the ingredients. The man behind the counter seemed to be the owner as he was familiar with two of the customers that came in for takeout while I was eating. He was kind and welcoming and assured me to start with 2 rolls when I was considering a third. He was spot on, the two rolls was plenty of food! I ordered the Cleveland Roll and the Montpelier Roll, both were delicious. Only thing keeping the location from a 5 is that there is no character to the interior, so I was the only one sitting at peak lunch hours and everyone else seemed to be picking up takeout. Next time (which there absolutely will be) I'll probably follow others' lead and pick up takeout.

Joshua L.

Yelp
I love this place. Affordable simple rolls and sushi and always perfect since it's right in the neighborhood. I do wish they were more consistent when they are open. I almost never can get them on the phone to order and when I go it's hot or miss if they are open during their listed open hours. Still love the place and it's definitely worth checking out.

Kayla B.

Yelp
I used to go here a lot. But now, Sushi Maki is rarely open during their listed business hours.

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
Tasty, fresh sushi takeout on the Hill! Cute takeout counter in Capitol Hill near Knee High Stocking, Melrose Market area. Menu comprises largely sushi rolls, fish is fresh and rolls are beautifully made. Recommend the seared salmon roll, spider roll with fried soft shell crab, Geisha roll (salmon with bay shrimp mayo, topped with unagi and avocado). Speedy service, online ordering available. This is strictly takeout (tiny counter). Prices are very reasonable - a good find on the Hill!

Yelp
SUSHI MAKI IS THE BEST !!! i have been coming here since 2015, and it's easily become my favorite sushi spot in all of seattle. min and jin, the owners, are absolute sweeties and put so much hard work into their business. their small takeout-only shop is cozy and welcoming with a friendly atmosphere, and even friendlier service. food is ready quick, and never compromises on quality, the sushi is extremely consistent and delicious. i like to order the salmon lover's combo, with a side of avocado roll - i don't trust the nigiri at most sushi places but the cut of fish is always perfect at sushi maki. i could not recommend this place enough, and always tell out-of-town friends to stop by if they're in the capitol hill area. i love you sushi maki

J W.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, food was great, ambience was great. I had 3 to go orders packed very nicely and neat. I really wanted to post a pic but we dug in so quick and it was gone! We had the steak and chicken teriyaki. Will definitely go again!

Yunnie L.

Yelp
Sushi Maki located somewhat hidden. You gotta pay attention to the door. It is a very tiny sushi store. We went on 12/30/22 and was raining outside. The lady was very nice and welcoming us. She has been making sushi with her coworker for 11 years. It is a hidden gem. The price is very fair. They only do take out! The sushi rolls were well wrapped and fish was fresh. Boyfriend ordered two vegetarian rolls and I ordered ones with eels and ny rolls. All of them are tasty. Def would go again if we are in the area!

Ellen H.

Yelp
Not only is the sushi amazing, but the service is so quick, and the owners are always so kind and welcoming when you come to pick up your order. Just two people run this whole business and they deserve every bit of support they receive :)

Beatrice D.

Yelp
Ambiance/decor: It's a small hole in the wall place so there's no indoor or outdoor seating it is just takeout. Price value: Their lunch special is available from 11am-2pm. 3 rolls for $20 is a good deal. Food: I ordered the 3 rolls for $20 I got the 777 (tempura), Salmon and avocado, and Spicy tuna. Drinks: I bought a bottled water which was $1.50. Quality: The quality is like grocery store sushi but slightly better. Good for: If you're in a rush and want fast sushi but I'd pass and check out other sushi spots in cap hill.

Jude N.

Yelp
Someone mentioned that it is just grocery store sushi, which I completely agreed. Nothing really special.

Cindy C.

Yelp
This is a super hole-in-the-wall joint in Cap Hill that is very much suited for take out orders as there is very little space in the actual restaurant itself. I ordered online via Yelp and then walked over to pick up my food, and everything was super easy. Ordered a total of 4 rolls for dinner -- geisha roll, bay special roll, nori nori roll, and Seattle special roll. The geisha and bay special rolls were delicious, and everything tasted very fresh. However, when it came to the nori nori and Seattle special rolls, we were a bit disappointed in the quality of the avocado used as there were many black dots in the avocado itself. Not sure how big of an issue this is but I have never seen this in any other sushi rolls I have had before. We ended up not eating a few pieces of the nori nori and Seattle special rolls for this reason. Hope this is just a one-time issue as this was our first time trying Sushi Maki...

Priscilla S.

Yelp
This place is delicious! Small shop so you have to do take out. The sushi is fresh and portions are generous. Highly recommend, does not disappoint.

Travis C.

Yelp
Best classic sushi I've ever had. Nothing fancy or crazy but everything was so delicious and fresh.

Tremaine R.

Yelp
A couple of years ago when we came, it was much bigger.. it was before the pandemic, it's still delicious and worth coming back too

Maryam K.

Yelp
I was so impressed by how fresh the fish here is! I ordered the Chef's Special and Geisha Roll. As folks here have mentioned, this is meant to be a pick-up and go spot (no seating). Definitely place your order online in advance to avoid waiting. The Chef's Special is definitely very worth it value-wise, with all the food you get. But for me, was a bit difficult to eat (the rolls themselves are pretty large!).

Dayna D.

Yelp
My favorite sushi place on Capitol Hill. They are a take out only little hole in the wall spot that is sure to please any sushi aficionado. Fairly priced for such chunky pieces of high quality fresh fish! I have a dog so love to stop by this place to pick up a quick bite when we are out for a walk. Highly Recommend!

Christine L.

Yelp
Wow some of the best/freshest sushi I've had in a while. Will definitely be coming back. Food: Geisha roll (11.75): Salmon avocado with shrimp and Mayo, topped with eel and more avocado. This is a flavor combo I didn't know I needed but I'm so glad I got. I tried the eel and salmon separately as well and both were really high quality. The salmon was flavorful, buttery, fresh and not too fishy and they didn't skimp on the size of the salmon pieces! Yellowtail nigiri (2.50): thick fresh piece of fish, so flavorful. Sushi rice was great quality and complimented the fish perfectly Albacore nigiri (2.50): large and fresh as well *side note: I really appreciated that the ginger and wasabi were provided in a separate cup since I don't like either and I hate when it's squeezed into the same box/transfers ginger flavor to half of the sushi Inside/service: This is truly a hole in the wall place with just enough space to stand inside and order but they do a good job with wearing masks and spraying/sanitizing the payment station. Cashier was really nice/sweet and service was pretty quick. Came for lunch around 11:30 and waited ~15 minutes

Yelp
Discovering this little spot near my apartment has changed my LIFE. I know that's dramatic, but this is genuinely my favorite place to get food in all of Seattle. It's my weekly treat!! It's ready quickly, the people running it are incredibly sweet, and the portions are large considering the quality and the price. If you live in the neighborhood, this should be a regular spot. I don't know if I've ever had better and more consistent sushi!

Mateo G.

Yelp
Pretty good for a lil window. Convenient and cool lil spot to grab sushi really quick. Can put in phone orders and show up for pickup.

Ivy L.

Yelp
So as everyone else has already mentioned, this is NOT a sit down place. There is only a small table inside for two people. Came here to try it out since this place had pretty good reviews. I checked out the menu on Yelp first and the prices seemed reasonable. But don't be fooled because the Yelp pictures are VERY old and the prices are not the same at all anymore. My total order included 6 sushis and 12 relatively small maki pieces and it was 25$ WITH the 10% Yelp discount. That's like going to Momiji during happy hour, tips included. The taste itself was really average. Something in the rolls was so salty that you really don't want to add any more soy sauce. They're maybe just slightly fresher than what you'd get at a supermarket. The sushis had pretty generous slices of fish on them though so at least that's that. There was a lunch menu that had more reasonable prices. I MIGHT go back for that one day but definitely not getting dinner there again.

Dominic N.

Yelp
This is a great little gem! Enjoy the sushi every time and the owners are so nice and sweet. Highly recommend!!

Melinda N.

Yelp
Excellent sushi! Fast and convenient! The fish was fresh and delicious. Ordered ahead, got there early and it was ready to go.

Arthur A.

Yelp
Very small business but very big taste. We accidentally stumbled on this gem off of Bellevue in Seattle. Glad we did tho!

Chad T.

Yelp
Good maki rolls, and literally the biggest pieces of sashimi I've ever seen in my life. Quiet little neighborhood spot. If the weather is nice, they have a couple small tables on the sidewalk you can eat at. No booze sold here.

Quynh T.

Yelp
Highly recommend you try Chef Special Sushi Bomb ! It's definitely a bomb Me and my friends did know it was that big, so after we received our order, the bomb roll and other rolls were too much for dinner with only 3 of us by accident lol but anw, it's worth !!!!!!!

Ankita D.

Yelp
Ensure you place your order online, they refused to take my order at the store and had no space to wait there. Also, there are very limited Vegetarian friendly options and they don't do any substitutions !!

Abdullah A.

Yelp
The 777 I ordered through eat 24, with shrimp tempura and cream cheese, was definitely above average, but I was pretty shocked at how little I got (6 pieces) for almost $11. The avocado roll was even smaller, though somewhat reasonably priced at about $5. I couldn't really justify eating it again for the price.

Sarah M.

Yelp
Came here having heard that this place has good sushi for the price. I ordered spicy tuna, new York, and spicy salmon for take out = $24 Not a great deal, especially since they were bad. Rice on the rolls were sticky and salty. It made the rolls really dense and the salty flavor ruined the balance of fish & rice. I took off all the rice and ate it with rice my husband made at home. Neither of the spicy rolls were even remotely spicy. The sushi chef was stingy with wasabi. I only got 2 little dabs for 3 rolls. I had to ask twice for her to reluctantly give me another pinch. This is minor, but menu is all over the place. There are So many rolls and are divided into unnecessary categories There are sushi restaurants all over Seattle, and there is absolutely no reason to ever visit this place again.

Jes W.

Yelp
Zero stars if I could, absolutely horrible customer service ( other restaurants deserve your time, don't waste it on this place, people are awful and unkind and know nothing of how to treat customers ) also the food is barely sub par ( coming from someone who used to really like this place but boy have they gone downhill and no not because of the pandemic, overall awful ) truly one of the worst experiences I've ever had, it's unfortunate the rudeness that led me to write this. Don't waist your time here :(

D Y.

Yelp
I love this place so much! This sushi place is the textbook version of a hole in the wall restaurant. There are no seats. You order at a counter at the door and wait nearby. The sushi is reasonably priced and tasty. No pretense - just homey, good food. For now, it is a hidden gem but I think they are one social influencer from being a hipster hotspot. I hope the owners find long lines and success!

Joe T.

Yelp
Very fast and easy online ordering! (Due to Covid). When I arrived to pick up my order they were very cautious on social distancing and were very thankful for my business. The sushi was just what I needed. The spicy tuna was delicious! Better than most for spicy tuna. The 777 was very creamy but I enjoyed it. I will order from them again!

Jennifer E.

Yelp
Sushi Maki had good sushi and a great deal for their lunch special: 3 rolls for $20. Salmon & Avocado, Tuna & Avocado & 777. There more selections but these ones are my fave for lunch special. Nice and hearty. There is no place to sit inside- it's very tiny. There is a table outside. It's just a take out sushi. Their hours are different opens for lunch from 11-2pm and then closes but opens for dinner at 5-10pm. They are closed on Saturday and Sunday. But they will close earlier before 2pm!! So get there before 1:30pm!! I learned my lesson twice! Pretty reasonable sushi. They give you free hot tea while you wait. Friendly and nice. It's nice to have a take out sushi. Great little sushi place for good deals. What a rare treat on Capitol Hill.

FoodJunkie G.

Yelp
Have been going to this place for over a decade now. Food is amazing and their quality is consistent. Sushi places have come and gone, but Sushi Maki is the benchmark for good sushi in Seattle for me. It's a great takeout spot. If you live in Capitol Hill this is a great spot to pick up dinner on your way home after work. Would recommend calling ahead to place your order. Some days the wait can be about 30-40 minutes during 6 - 8 pm peak. Typical wait time is about 15-20 minutes. They have Hawaiian style Pokè bowls as well. It's called Donbury bowls. It's better than Pokè bowls from most dedicated pokè joints.

Inna B.

Yelp
I've had Sushi Maki bookmarked for years and years, and today I finally found myself hungry for some sushi and about a block away. The cashier/server was very nice and I enjoyed my interactions with her. She was very... calm. That was really nice. I love nigiri and like leaving most of the decisions to the chef, so I was happy to discover that they have a combination option that includes five pieces of nigiri, a spicy tuna roll, and miso soup. The sushi was simple and it wasn't outstanding, but it was good. I enjoyed it. The spicy tuna roll was much bigger than I thought it would be, which was a pretty pleasant surprise. Mindblowing sushi? No. Lovely in a very simple way? Yes... that sounds about right. I like this spot.

Philip W.

Yelp
I moved to Capitol Hill a few months ago and am so happy to have discovered Sushi Maki. I love their salmon lover's combo - such incredible value for fresh fish. My girlfriend doesn't like raw fish but loves all their veggie rolls. We've had some other local sushi and this is by far our favorite. Highly recommended!

Tahni H.

Yelp
I like this little joint. Don't plan on sitting down to eat unless you are only a single person as your group. There are maybe seats for 4 inside but the restaurant resembles a large closet to me. However, sushi was made very well. Lunch special 3 rolls (of 6 pieces) for $20. That's a steal! Fish was super fresh and flavors were well balanced and simple. I like that Sushi Maki has more of an authentic feel compared to these over-priced fusion hot spots that are all over Seattle. Service was excellent! With only room for two workers behind the counter, we did have to wait for 30 min, but we placed a big order of the 3 specials and she made it right there on the spot. I could see her making the rolls. Staff was very polite in asking if we would be okay waiting and offered delicious tea and candies while we wait. So we walked around the neighborhood a bit & came back to get our sushi. it was very Yummy! I'll be back here for sure! :)

Jusjana X.

Yelp
I just needed some help with the menu as a start and the lady was so in hurry to talk with me se just did not want to explain anything second time she is doing that very unacceptable customer service. Customers before she tells 10 minutes wait me without even knowing the order tells me double time waiting . Not welcoming for new customers at all. If it allows no stars no stars at all rating

Angela S.

Yelp
The tiny hole-in-the-wall that ended up being my favorite meal from my trip. My sister and I ended up at this spot because our first choice didn't pan out. Thank goodness it didn't because then we would've have found this gem! We ended up eating here two nights in a row because the food was just THAT good. The prices are good and the fish was fresh with no disgusting fishy smell! They also don't skimp on the fish so expect generous slices of fish. There is seating inside but it's literally enough space for about 3 people to eat comfortably. Everything is self-serve, you can find all of the utensils and sauces by the cashier.

Colette C.

Yelp
Walked to this hole in the wall (literally) today for their 3 rolls @ $20 lunch special - great deal! Pros: - quick service - friendly & professional staff - delicious rolls & fresh fish Advice to Customers: - come for takeout (the place is small & not for sit-down - bring non American Express credit cards (they do take it, but bare in mind American Express charges them a $4 transaction fee for a $20 order Thank You! Will be back again!

Melissa O.

Yelp
No. The tuna sashimi was metallic tasting, jello appearing, and gross tasting. The rolls we had were ok though.

Marilyn E.

Yelp
The freshest sushi in town. It's perfection. I'm a sushi glutton and have tried all the spots across town--searching far and wide for the best of the best. And Sushi Maki is #1 y'all. My favorite is their salmon nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, and the geisha roll. Absolute heaven

Marina M.

Yelp
I eat here at least once a week. It's super close to my place, and incredibly convenient to call and pick up. The sushi here is incredibly fresh. This is not the place for those greasy deep fried rolls and their light rolls really shine because of the quality of the ingredients. My favorite is the Boston roll and their seared salmon nigiri. Everything is also priced just right. Seating is practically non-existent, just a couple of booths, so this place is perfect to pick up and go. Maki seems to be consistently busy, so calling ahead is definitely a good idea. It's also important to keep in mind that they take a break between lunch and dinner hours.

Bach N.

Yelp
Im not a big fan of sushi, in other word, i have never satisfied with any sushi restaurant in Seattle, but today I was totally sold! The chef special looked like a picture and tasted like food from paradise!

Mark T.

Yelp
The lady that works there is very rude and so is the man that works there also. I ordered the California roll and it was bland. A grocery store has better food than this place. Also, the restaurant didnt look clean also.

Tick...tick...tock...Clock C.

Yelp
The things you should understand. 1. This is not a sit down place (sometimes there are 2-3 small patio chairs and tables on the sidewalk on a nice day). It is more of a carry out place. 2. The best sushi I have had in a while since moving from NYC. The sushi was really good. They don't have a large menu but they have the essentials. So don't be expecting some "specialty roll" that has a ridiculous cheesy name that each city has to make them a part of where the restaurant is (I think when places do things like this it is cheesy and obnoxious and generally the roll is not that good because it is just a hodgepodge of different rolls to make the roll a "specialty roll"). The rolls are larger than I am used to and it's just not all filler with very little fish it is equal amounts of all ingredients...and bonus! the rolls completely stay together. The service here is really great the people who took my order were really nice and genuinely friendly. The prices are very, very fair for what you receive. The ingredients are fresh and tasty. *(If you want to pay $5.00 for a rolll guess what you are going to get a roll that is worth $5.00 and falls apart and are super small with subpar ingredients...not the case here). I live super close so for me it is a nice place to pick up something to go and take it home to have dinner or lunch. Come by for a quick lunch the service is great and the sushi is even better :)

Jingwen Y.

Yelp
Holy Chief Rolls! They are ginormous! I ordered 1 chief roll and 2 regular rolls and got 1 dinner and 2 lunch out of my entire order. Maybe that speaks to me over ordering things. Great place to pick up some sushi to-go for a night in. The actual space is tiny and would be great for a quick bite. The sashimi is pretty fresh and the rolls tasted great. Definitely my go to spot to pick up some sushi.

Mico A.

Yelp
Love the takeout. Highly recommend the Chef's Special. Value for money.

Crystel T.

Yelp
I ordered deliver through Uber Eats and I was very disappointed with the food. I ordered the "Seared Salmon" and "Valentine" rolls. The seared salmon has crab, avocado with seared salmon on top. Had I known it would be imitation crab they use, I would've never ordered at this restaurant. The Valentine has tempura shrimp, avocado, cream cheese with tuna and spicy mayo on top. Oddly, it was kind of salty. The gyozas were good, but they honestly taste like the frozen ones you can get at your nearest grocery store, lol. I ate about 5 pieces of both rolls combined - what a waste.
