Very good Omakase at NYC. We order the 18-course and add a lot for our dinner. The fish is flown in from Japan. It was very fresh and expertly prepared. chef will talk with u through the whole meal and had incredible attention to detail. There will have a book for the fish texture and flavor. Have good service at all.

Google
Traditional Omikase (chef's choice) Sushi experience with some of the best food we've had in NYC. We had the 15-course meals with a couple add-ons at the end of our dinner. The fish is flown in from Japan. It was very fresh and expertly prepared. Our chef led us through the whole meal and had incredible attention to detail. He quickly noticed that I'm left-handed and presented the pieces of sushi opposite of how it would be placed for a right-handed person. We were blown away with the service and quality of the meal.

Google
Delicious omakase. Also had some unique dishes there that I have never had before. Only took photos of the appetizers, but everything was great. BYOB is nice, as well.

Van Shea Sedita

Google
One of a kind omakase experience. Sushi was imported from Japan and tasted buttery and savory. The chef prepared every single morsel thoughtfully.

Google
Sushi Makoto was a very fresh experience. The selection of fish was standard but the other appetizers and dishes were unique. The vibe is awesome— with a little more intimacy than some other omakase spots in the city. As well, for the price point, the value here is great. I’ve paid more for less in the city and it feels like these days it’s hard to find “good” omakase for under $200 PP. Corkage fee is very reasonable, and their sake cooling decide is almost worth a visit in itself! My only quarrel is that it took some time to get seated, for a reservation at 7, a lot of the guests from earlier were still dining and we weren’t sat until closer to 7:20. Which isn’t the end of the world, but something to perhaps note from a business side. Lastly, I would’ve liked to be offered more at the end of the meal instead of being given the cheque. Perhaps that’s standard protocol but it was not offered to us our evening there. Regardless, amazing experience. Truly loved this spot.

The 15-course omakase we experienced was nothing short of extraordinary—easily the best we’ve ever had. While the service was impeccable (a solid 10/10), the food truly stole the show. Each bite was thoughtfully crafted and left us eager for the next, with every course blending seamlessly into the next. Standout dishes? The liver we began with, the aged tuna, the uni, and that incredible cardamom soup. Every element was unforgettable. Chef Ryan’s attention to detail made the experience even more special—he explained each dish with care, adding a personal touch that enhanced the meal. This was more than dinner; it was an unforgettable culinary journey, and I can’t wait to return.

Google
The omakase offers a nice variety of fish, and I appreciated the little pamphlet with descriptions. However, a few things took away from the experience: the restroom could use a bit more attention, there were fruit flies hovering on the table, and the wasabi was a bit overpowering. The chef was kind, but overall, the quality didn’t quite feel worth the $200+ per person.

*Hands done excellent omakase at a great price point for lunch* Makoto is a small very unassuming blink-and-you'll-miss-it restaurant. However, you must go. I went for their 15 piece lunch omakase and was surprised to see I was the only one there. Was great as it made it a more private experience. I've tried several omakases for lunch and this may now be my favorite. Off the bat you're given two different pieces over a crispy base with one the chef mentions to break up and mix in a bowl. This already is different from other places. Of course the fish is fresh as many melt in your mouth. What I enjoyed the most was having pieces of fish I've never heard of/had before that I haven't seen typically at omakases such as Isaki "Chicken Grunt" (damn good), Pacific Saury (beautifully prepared with a nice light seared flavor) and Needlefish. Each piece got better and better as I went on. They also provide you with a little book with a picture, description and bio of each fish you're about to devour making it a fun educational experience as well. I wish I had gotten the 18 course as that had barracuda which is very good so I could only imagine how Makoto would have prepared it. The sushi chef is really well trained and HIGHLY recommend this place. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Had an amazing omakase experience here last week, fresh sushis, beautiful presentations, warm services, with reasonable prices. It's definitely one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the city now.

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
The best omakase I have had in New York City. The fish was truly so fresh and the staff were super friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for omakase in the city.

Yelp
For $120 and 15 pieces, this sushi restaurant is delicious and not a bad deal given other higher end places charge $300+. The fish they serve is standard, but they make sure you get crowd favorites like toro and uni. My favorites were the Shima Aji, Saba, and Akami. It's a solid place, but don't expect special or rare delicacies. The rice was decent, but not the mouth feel like the higher end spots. Given what you pay and the courses, it's a great option for a more casual dinner. Helpful staff.

Yelp
The best omakase experience I have ever had in the New York City!! They recently updated the menu. My favorites are always king salmon, fatty tuna, and uni! High quality fish and they have a wide variety of Japanese sake! Great service too~ I will definitely come back

Yelp
This omakase is located in the heart of Chelsea! They have a team of Michelin-starred chefs that craft each piece to its perfection. The 15 course omakase includes appetizers, nigiri pieces, and dessert. It's super thoughtful that they have a handwritten name place card for every guest. Also, it is very unique that they give a booklet to explain each nigiri piece! I learned so much about different types of fish. They use high quality ingredients from Japan, and it is so fresh! The chefs are super friendly as well! The space is clean and cozy!

Yelp
Came here for a 15 course omakase ($120) at 9PM. It was a pretty intimate dinner and felt like we had our own personal sushi chef as it was only myself, my gf, and another couple who booked a reservation. The entire course took 90 minutes, which isn't bad. Seems like they improved on this considering the previous reviews that it took nearly 3 hours before. Love the ambiance as it is very bright, modern wooden finishes and subtile decorations here and there. The chef's counter fits 8 people and there's a few tables scattered around. The 15 course consisted of 3 appetizers, 11 sushi courses, and 1 dessert. The 18 course would consist of an extra appetizer and 2 additional sushi courses. Overall, I enjoyed the entire experience while also watching the sushi chef prepare the dishes. Some of the highlights include the Cherry Salmon, Fatty Tuna, and the Fatty Tuna Hand Roll. Water is refilled consistently. If you drop rice or sauce, a staff member will come and wipe it off before the next piece is served. For the main sushi courses, they will provide a book with a description or picture of the fishes being served, which is super helpful knowing what to eat. Only complaint I have was the uni that was served didn't taste fresh. All the other pieces were prepared great and fresh.

Amelia L.

Yelp
This review is for the 18-course omakase at Sushi Makato. There were 5 of us dining that evening. I felt that the food was ok, not memorable. The ambiance was pleasant - not noisy, not crowded. Service was likewise attentive enough, but canned. The chef who served our group was not particularly skilled because the slices were uneven - thick in some places and thin in others. There was a lot of cross hatching going on, even fish that didn't require it, and I feel that there was excessive use of the butane torch. In summary, it felt like omakase ala IKEA, in the sense that it was nice enough in a pedestrian sort of way.

Yelp
What an amazing experience!! I absolutely loved my meal tonight at Sushi Makoto. I sat by the sushi bar and was taken very good of by Chef and experienced Omakase in a friendly and professional environment. The fish was so fresh and each course was better than the other. I loved all of the torched sushi and I loved the uni! Super delish and fresh-you definitely feel like you're in Japan! Insta: @thehungrysw

Yelp
TLDR: they just opened so definitely have a few service kinks to work out but the bang for your buck is well worth it (18 course omakase including 4 nigiri based apps, 13 pieces of sushi and 1 banging dessert). We will likely be back after they get their sea legs! SETTING: had a res for 7pm on a Wednesday night for Valentines Day, and rushed to arrive promptly. We got there at 6:58pm or so, and the seating before us was still going through their omakase course. We ended up waiting 30 full minutes pass our res time to even be seated. The restaurant is not that big it has about a 10 seat counter and four tables around the perimeter. There was nowhere to stand so there was a 20+ crowd around the door for the better of 30 minutes. Not a great start, and if it wasn't V Day we probably would have left. FOOD: we were finally seated and some more service issues began. For example, it took over 20 minutes for them to serve us a beer we had ordered. There were only 2 sushi chefs and 4 waitresses. There were some other chefs in the back of house but not serving at the counter so not sure what their purpose was. It was realllllly chaotic, and crazy. Then we began our meal, which was really good. The quality of the fish was outstanding and the rice was perfect but quite small. My favorite piece was the marinated tuna- it was so decadent and flavorful! Some of the appetizers need to be worked out for example the Toro Uni in this walnut cracker. The cracker overwhelmed the sushi so you could barely taste it and it was quite dry. The cracker was unnecessary. But every single piece of actual sushi was really good, and you can't get this kind of omakase for this price in NYC anymore. SERVICE: As mentioned above, the service needs to work itself out which I think it will with time. I would expect after waiting 30 minutes after our res to be seated we would get one piece of fish for free or something along those lines to show true hospitality. Which we didn't. But they did give me a beautiful bouquet of cloth flowers on the way out which was really sweet. And every server and chef was incredibly nice. They just need to stagger the seatings better, better anticipate busy periods, and provide some added hospitality to a bunch of disgruntled New Yorkers who don't like to wait for anything! VERDICT: the quality is worth it but prepare to be frustrated if it's a busy night and wait a while to be seated. I willll probably be back after they work these issues out!

Yelp
We visited on Saturday and had an awesome experience. We booked through Iris and did the 18 courses meal. First all I wanted to point all that the service was absolutely amazing. The chef really took their time making the sushi and it was unlike most Manhattan omakase where you're seated for an hour and had to hurry through dishes. I'm not a bean's fan so I wasn't really into our dessert. But when I was talking to my friend the chef overheard and offered to give a new plates for our entire group. We were offered cheesecake instead and it was absolutely delicious. The fish quality was very good. I was able to try food I've never had before. I especially loved the Sardine and the cod milt, they were unlike anything I've had before at omakase. The place was very pretty and I loved all the pretty dishes.

Yelp
Man, this was a bad meal. I had called to ask them to bring us 2 glasses of champagne when we were seated as we were celebrating my hubby's birthday. We sat down and 10 mins pass so at this point I just tell the server to cancel it and ended up ordering different drinks. The timing on all the courses were so inconsistent. The food was super salty yet bland at the same time. The shrimp was extremely slimy and fishy. I really wanted to like it but everything was just off. The whole dinner felt discombobulated and I ended up leaving frustrated. UPDATE: You guys are correct, you called me. HOWEVER I was seated for a few minutes before I excused myself to the bathroom and upon my return it still hadn't arrived which was why I cancelled it. When I say the meal was discombobulated, I didn't mean the timing of the whole meal was off but certain pieces would come right away whereas others we had to wait 15+ minutes. Unfortunately the reason I asked for takeaway was because the meal itself wasn't enjoyable. I'd like to also add my husband did not enjoy the meal. If you'd like to have him leave a review I'd be more than happy to have him do so.

Yelp
Super traditional omakase. Generous nigiri portions. No mucking around with overpowering garnishes. Each piece lets the fish flavour shine through. Overall a fantastic experience and worth the price.

Yelp
Tried the $120 15-Course Omakase for dinner from Sushi Makoto and it was really unique! They start you with 3 appetizers: drunk shrimp, spanish mackerel and mantis shrimp - all of which were extremely succulent and light on the palate. Next came the sushi courses which featured some interesting ones I've never had from other omakases like the Japanese Cockle Clam and Gizzard Shad. My favorite nigiri was the King Salmon - so incredibly rich and fatty, melted in my mouth. To finish, I had a pudding with caramel sauce and chocolate shavings which was amazing! Super creamy and the perfect dessert to end off the meal. Check out @dearfoodiepebbles for more of NYC's best restaurants!

Yelp
Delicious delicious delicious! Had the 18 course! Staff was extremely attentive and welcoming. Food was fresh - as it should be. Nice cozy setting. Would recommend for a nice date night. Will be back!

Yelp
This Omakase restaurant is outstanding. The servers are well-informed and genuinely enthusiastic about their roles. The chefs are skilled, preparing fish that is not only fresh but also beautifully presented. The ambiance is enhanced by a beautiful environment and fresh flowers used as decorations throughout the restaurant. The selection of sake is extensive, and the owner's deep knowledge allows for excellent pairings with the sushi. An excellent dining choice for those who appreciate fine sushi and sake.

Yelp
This omakase restaurant is perfect for date nights or to catch up with a friend. With seating for only 8 by the bar and a few tables, you can be assured of attentive service from your servers. My drink was never empty and weirdly I think the hand towel at the start of the meal was the best offered at any restaurant I've been to (including Michelin starred ones lol). Getting to the sushi: The menu was innovative and unique. There were the stalwart favorites (ottoro/king salmon/tuna) but also pieces that I wouldn't have tried on my own but found I loved (golden snapper, sea bream). I could have used the teensiest bit more wasabi on my pieces but everything was so fresh and delicious. I loved it! Don't miss out on the dessert. It was the perfect subtle bite to end a fabulous meal!
google avatar

Shirley G.

Yelp
5 stars overall! The most standout appetizer experience was the chawanmushi, a delicate crafted Japanese egg custard with its pudding texture and rich umami flavor. Regarding the omakase selections, the sea urchin, king salmon, and spot prawn are my top favorites, while the striped jack and scallop are secondary. The service was truly exceptional, with attentive staff. The overall decor of the place is aesthetic minimalism, and I appreciated the diverse plating designs used to enhance the dining experience. 4 stars for atmosphere because the temperature is slightly high for me. But there's nothing they can do at the moment since it's controlled by the building. Make sure to not dress too warm.

Yelp
Awesome service, I feel like I'm in a bougie Japanese restaurant, ambient gives spa-like vibes (very peaceful). Waiter came to refilled my water a lot and even gave me extra hand sanitizers. Appetizers were an awesome light start to the meal. I thought the otoro and sakura masu were my favorite pieces of salmon and tuna I've ever tried before. Every sushi altogether tasted very fresh and thoughtful. The dessert, the panna cotta, tasted very delicious and I loved that they paired with a hot green tea. I finished my meal in 1 hour and a half. Very aesthetic building, chef was very passionate about his cooking and focused and it all really tasted good! Highly recommend!

Fan L.

Yelp
Definitely have to try this omakase! Very fresh fish and interesting instructions as well

Sydney W.

Yelp
Chef Henry is so kind! The omakase was delicious, thoughtful, & FRESH!! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in NYC. The vibe is so relaxing--you literally feel like you're in a spa!!

Yelp
Trying out this new omakase place for their soft opening. I think the quality of the fish and the flavor were all good. I really liked the appetizer. We added the uni tasting for $35 I think it's well worth it because it's one of the sweetest uni I had. They only down side is that the fish is pretty small and think. For a girl I'm about 60-70% full but for my husband he was still hungry after the meal.
google avatar

Diana P.

Yelp
Came here on a Wednesday night for this new sushi spot and i must say it was quite good and fresh ! Our sushi chef really paid attention to how he cut the fish and was precise. The fish was fresh and wasn't overburdened with a bunch of toppings. Can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Kooby W.

Yelp
The place is very worthy to visit but hard to make a reservation due to limited seats on bar. The fish as toro, mackerel and hamachi are very fresh. Also vibe is chill. Sushi masters are friendly too. Very enjoy the experience.

Nick L.

Yelp
Delicious food in an elegant atmosphere. Great service and very cool dishes. An excellent omakase!

Tuckman L.

Yelp
Food - The fish is fresh and surprisingly the rice is just right. Something that is important when it comes to sushi. The appetizers were light and not overpowering which when led to the nigiri didn't drown out the flavors. The nigiri are on the smaller end. I would have liked it to be a bit bigger, both in length and thickness of the cuts. The hand roll at the end is pretty good as they add some dry veggies into it, giving it a crunchy texture. At the end, we also added an uni tasting course ($35 supplemental fee) which was well worth it. The uni were from Hokkaido and Santa Barbara. Fresh, sweet, and just melts in your mouth. If you love uni, get it. Service - At this sushiya, the chef lets you know what the pieces of nigiri are as he places them in front of you. The waitress made sure our water glasses were not empty. They didn't rush you to serve the next wave of customers. At the same time, 2+ hours for 15 course left me feeling a bit hungry at the end of the meal. Suggestion is to have a light meal before coming or consider a place nearby afterwards to top off the night. Ambience - The place is brightly lit with counter space for 8 and some tables on wall sides. Mainly neutral colors; a theme/trend seen in many new restaurants. If you're looking for a romantic scenery, this wouldn't be it. Here for a business chat? Not it either. This is more of a meet some friends and enjoy some good food kind of place.
google avatar

Hunter W.

Yelp
Food is amazing. Fish is fresh and sea urchin is deeliiicious. Problem is the service.... 18 course took 3+ hours. towards the end we wish we picked the 15 course instead. Entire place is disorganized at best. Sorry - we did enjoy the food just didn't expect spending twice the time watching "how the fish is made" 18 times before the food is served.. Probably wouldn't go back :( will miss the food
google avatar

Yelp
Great new open sushi place. I heard the restaurant has a chef from Masa. Great quality sushi and very fresh fish imported from Japan. They will change the menu every month to get the seasonal fish. Highly recommended sushi place in Manhattan.
google avatar

Tiff Z.

Yelp
A cozy place to have nigiri with friends, you can choose from two set menus, the whole experience is about one and half hour. My favorites are the spot spawn and uni with seaweed. We added a uni tasting to share at the end, which has three uni from different regions. Overall was a good experience!

Bo Z.

Yelp
+ sushi was fresh + good selection of appetizers and a dessert course + the aesthetics of the furniture and tableware were very nice + attentive wait staff, drinks were regularly filled - the soy sauce overpowered a lot of the lighter fishes and started tasting similar - pauses between each course of sushi was longer than a typical omakase course ~ price for the dinner is higher than other omakase of similar quality. But the location is very accessible ~ music was a bit unnecessarily loud, could be just where I sat. Wasn't bad enough to ask for an adjustment.
google avatar

Xiaoming Z.

Yelp
I enjoyed a dinner with my friend on a rainy night; the ingredients were fresh, and the ambiance was delightful. The restaurant offered two different omakase sets at reasonable prices. We opted for uni as an addition, and the first one had a sweet and fresh taste.service here was good too.
google avatar

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here! The food was exceptionally delicious and fresh, the staff were friendly, and their attention to detail was commendable. They actively sought feedback on the dishes, patiently answering our questions about the sashimi. The waitress, in particular, was very attentive. We look forward to returning for our next visit!

Melanie S.

Yelp
Absolutely AMAZING!!!! The 15 course was absolutely amazing and so unique. The toro was next level and the service was so good. The chefs were so friendly and informative!! The fish was so fresh and they even gave you a booklet to explain each of the fishes! I will definitely be going back. Such an intimate setting which I loved!

Yelp
SUSHI MAKOTO has a great ambiance in the restaurant and I love how the interior looks! not to mention, the sushi is delicious and the quality is super fresh! They just opened too so I would definitely recommend:)

Yelp
Went in for first day opening. the restaurant is pretty cozy the start dish is amazing, not a traditional but cold dish with sophisticated flavor looking forward to menu change in February They have promotion now have meal in January and get one meal for free in February

Roti C.

Yelp
Walked in to a nice clean and quaint restaurant with some wonderful architecture and a warm welcome. Started off very strong with two uni courses within the first 4 courses and all very delicious. Service was good as well at first but the sake took a while. It wasn't a big deal since we weren't in a rush. However as the meal progressed more and more issues arose and that initial strong impression slowly crumbled. The food was mostly good but some of the fish were pretty bland and forgettable not something I would expect from a $150 price tag. The time it took between courses was way too long as well. Ended up being there for about 2.5 hours and several other guests had arrived for their reservation before we even got to the last course. On top of all of that, when I poured all of the sake into my glass, the waitress took the bottle but also took the full glass of sake, which was $70 for a small bottle, and spilled half of it before setting it down and apologizing. It wasn't her fault and her service was amazing and honestly loved her attitude but it was a waste of a glass of expensive sake. Towards the end of the dinner with only two courses left, they brought out the dessert before the last course, and by then one table had eaten half of their matcha cheesecake and left because they were in a rush. I had to ask the staff about the final hand roll before they finally brought it out a few minutes later. The only other table got theirs a few minutes later as well, and after that, a third order came out but they couldn't figure out where it belonged and almost dropped it off at my table before saying sorry and leaving. The only other table didn't even bother eating theirs and left as well. Place has a lot of potential with amazing appetizers and loads of uni dishes. The service was great with really attentive and nice servers, and ambiance was great. However, it's a little rough around the edges and most of the lower priced omakase spots like genki or sanyu west are honestly better at a lower price point. Good luck

Mulong L.

Yelp
I only wrote reviews when I've either had a horrible experience or a life changing one and this is definitely a life changing one. I am an omakase snob and this place did NOT disappoint. Every single course was beautifully crafted. All the different flavors the chef thought of was so unique and different to any other omakase l've ever had. The sushi chefs were so incredibly nice and thoughtful when making the pieces. And the server made sure my water glass was never empty. I cannot say enough incredible things about this place. Absolutely worth every single penny. The environment is cozy and pretty.

Yelp
Love it! New restaurant on 14 st. High food quality with fresh seafood. Chef is soo nice. He added more rice in my hand roll

Becky H.

Yelp
Great quality - ingredients are super fresh and well prepared. There were quite a few dishes that impressed me. The environment looks cozy and clean. The chief made it slow paced which really made sure we can fully enjoy each dish. Overall highly recommended!

Yelp
Very beautiful omakase sushi! I really like the king salmon and uni hand roll. Would definitely recommend

Yelp
Amazing and unique omakase experience!!! They invite each customer to choose their own little glass, also they have a book to introduce each fish. Not only yummy food, but also very unique dining experience.

Grace S.

Yelp
Very fresh and tasty sushi. Lovely atmosphere and excellent services. Will def come back for the omakase. The price and quality is unbeatable in the whole NYC!!!

Dani R.

Yelp
The food, service and ambiance here all deserve 5 stars! I got to try two nigiris I never had before- geoduck clam and a sardine- I absolutely loved both! The appetizers were amazing and so original. My favorite was the sweet shrimp topped with caviar and a sauce made with uni. Each nigiri piece was so carefully curated and all tasted so fresh and amazing. I love how each piece was plain - with just fish- you can truly taste each kind of fish. They also gave a book with facts about each fish being served so we could follow along. I loved this place!!!!

John H.

Yelp
Delicious! Sushi sushi sushi!!! Definitely will be coming back for their excellent hospitality and amazing food.
