20 Knockout Sushi Restaurants in Portland and Beyond

"This cozy, first-date-friendly Division sushi bar is one of those spots that works well for a wide range of sushi enthusiasts. Those seeking simply adorned, beautiful cuts of fresh or aged fish — maybe cut and arranged to look like a rose — will find that in spades. Those who want an elaborate maki drizzled with mango sauce or topped with seared salmon are also well taken care of here. Specials can be ornate and flashy, like grilled mussels topped with salmon belly, and vegetarians will have plenty of options, as well." - Seiji Nanbu, Janey Wong

Cozy restaurant and tremendous sushi! We had the Volcano roll and the yellow Tail Torch roll and they were both so good, with the spicy, baked Volcano roll as the winner. The mushroom cigars were delicious and I’m definitely not a mushroom enthusiast. Definitely make a reservation for Friday and Saturday for peak hours. Parking can be a challenge as well. This was $50 for the two rolls + appetizer and that’s a fair price for high quality sushi. You’d pay more in Seattle or San Francisco and not get better quality.

I’ve been visiting Sushi Mazi for over 5 years now and the consistent quality, incredible fish and sake selection, attention to detail and lovely caring team has brought my partner and I back time and time again. The rolls are all great (get the salmon skin roll you won’t regret it) but the nigiri and sashimi are where it’s at! Perfect fish with delightful accents and Marc nails the fish to rice ratio on the nigiri every time. Sake selection is also on point! There are always new bottles to try and varieties to fit every preference or pallet. Chef Marc and his family have created a unique local gem. Sushi is my favorite food and Sushi Mazi is my favorite place in Portland to get it.

Just wow! Mazi and his team are friendly, attentive, kind and provided a fun and memorable experience. This is hands down the best Japanese selection of sushi (especially Salmon) that I’ve had dollar for dollar. Recommend sitting at the bar and ordering all the specials - yes, all of them. The aged Salmon with the variations offered are all so so good. We did order one roll, but honestly did not need to.

Sushi Mazi’s high end environment and kindness created a beautiful experience for me! The chefs and hosts are so generous. Plus the food is top notch! The Volcano roll has a nice spice sizzle to it. Highly recommend.

Mazi sushi is my new favorite spot in town! With over 30 years of sushi mastery, Mazi is serving up some of the best cuts of fish in town, hands down! Could not have had a better experience at a sushi bar, must go!

Google
This was our first time at Sushi Mazi, but we did read about them online and their grasshoppers, which we wanted to try and were also a first. Both experiences did not disappoint. In fact, everything was delightful. We decided to sit at the sushi bar with it being our first time and wanting some guidance from the chefs. We went on a Tuesday night, and we were lucky enough to have Mazi himself making our sushi. Looking through the menu, it was hard to decide which rolls to pick, and Chef Mazi was happy to make some suggestions that were perfect for our first time. We had the Torch roll and the love me roll in addition to a grasshopper each and some tempura. We wanted to try some new things from their blackboard, which included a number of aged fish options. Something we haven't tried before. Mazi was happy to answer all of our questions and guided us through our choices. We tried the aged salmon toro, the spicy aged tuna, and the two other preparations of salmon, both aged latte salmon and shinjuki? Each and every bite was full of flavor with the perfect balance that melted in your mouth.  If only we could fit in more. We did save enough room for a special gelato that Chef Mazi collaborated with local gelato maker Gato Gelato to develop the perfect combination of sweet and tart. We had the sweet cherry and yuzu, which was the perfect end to a memorable meal. We will be back! Eager for more. And i would be remiss not to mention the excellent selection of sake. I wish i had more pictures of the beautiful presentations, but everything was so good. I ate all of it before I thought to take pictures. I did manage to snap a couple.

I’ve been going here for over 8 years now. It’s my favorite sushi spot in town and always a fantastic experience. The place is small so doesn’t get all the attention like other sushi restaurants in the area. World class food run by an amazing family who treat you like a friend visiting their home. Take your time here to enjoy the atmosphere, imported sake, delicious rolls, and fun decor. You can’t get better than this place, everything is carefully prepared with love.

Yelp
I'm swiping right on this one! I almost walked out as soon as I walked in because it was empty and the music was a bit obnoxious, but music is personal preference so I'm filtering that out of my rating. The owner and staff are incredibly friendly and the food is superb! The mackerel was very mild, which is unusual in my experience, but very pleasant. The Tobiko and Ikura were both fresh and delicious, and they include the option for quail eggs, which I love. Creamy with the salty, that's what's up. I asked for a recommendation and the owner didn't disappoint; aged tuna that he blasted with a torch and topped with a lemon aioli or something. Jeer Desus, that was good!

Yelp
A very unique sushi experience Sushi Mazi has uncommon pairings and an attentive staff. It is a small sushi restaurant that fills up very quickly set up in almost a galley configuration - two rows of tightly spaced tables. The staff was constantly going up and down dropping off plates and taking orders. They were very efficient. The sushi was hit and miss. Some of the classics were very good, but I will never understand putting a piece of matcha chocolate on a salmon nigiri. That was atrocious. The chocolate and raw fish combo was not good at all. Strangely, despite being not warm outside, inside it was incredibly hot. It was so warm that I had to leave a couple times during my meal to get comfortable again. The hall to the bathroom was not hot so it wasn't the overall building. I don't quite get why it was so warm. It was fine. I wouldn't not go back but I don't think I would seek them out.

Yelp
Stopped in here because I was looking for a quick place with good reviews to get a bite to eat. This places seemed like a good choice, and it was. When we walked in it was empty (they had just opened), and we got seated immediately. Once we were seated we looked over the menu and ordered some miso soups, which were quite good (I feel like miso soup is hard to really mess up). We moved onto our main order, where we ordered a couple rolls, some hamachi nigiri, some other salmon nigiri, and a chefs choice sashimi The sashimi chefs choice came first, it was fresh and plating was very nice. Though, none of the items on the plate were explained to us. I have a general idea of what everything was upon seeing it, but there was one thing I had zero idea about. Once the rest of the sushi came out we started eating, the service was quick and the people were kind. Unfortunately, the first nigiri I picked up had a hair in the rice under the fish.. Common mistake, so I set it aside and moved on. Not a huge deal, but deff something to mention. Overall the experience was good, and if you're looking for a quick bit to eat, this may be a good spot for you!

Yelp
Food is exceptional! Service, owners and staffs, goes above and beyond! Not your regular sushi place, but with menus that specializes in aged tuna and salmon. The sushi bursts with flavors. Nowhere to compare, because the menu is created by sushi chef Mark. So so awesome. A hidden gem in Portland. Highly recommend the aged tuna and salmon menu, sashimi salad, salmon skin appetizer. Great selection of sake. Absolute gem! They offer fantastic omakase. If you love sushi, this is a must. Family own and fantastic

Yelp
Delicious sushi! What a treat to find such good sushi in Portland. I lived in Japan for 4 years and recently spent some time visiting. I'm picky about my Japanese food and this sushi is approved. Super friendly and kind staff. Thank you for the awesome take out. P.S-- I just had tried for lunch Afuri Izakaya and wish I had found this place sooner.

Yelp
Small restaurant so don't bring a big party without calling first! Our server was very attentive and sweet. Food was served quickly for being so busy. The mango shrimp roll was my favorite!

Yelp
Nice little sushi bar. No fuss and all the traditional sushi with plenty of new style rolls. The fish was crazy fresh and NO red dye left in my sushi rice! I decided to switch over to sashimi and it was also heavenly. Only suggestion I would have is to get some cute little outdoors tables like your neighbor - pizza guy.

Yelp
Sushi Mazi is decent overall, but on my visit, didn't seem to live up to the experience of most of the other reviewers. To be clear, the only location that is open is the one on Division Street, and this is where we visited. One curiosity / concern is with the chopsticks...they're wooden or made from bamboo, and don't appear to be disposable. The tops of them showed wear at the edges (shiny finish was worn off), which lead me to believe that they're washed and reused. Porous materials such as wood and bamboo cannot be sanitized (which is why you'll never see an NSF certification on any kitchen implement that has wooden handles). We decided to risk it and dine there anyway. Service was prompt and friendly, but the food wasn't anything particularly noteworthy. Presentation was nice, but one of our rolls was comically tall, topped with a huge amount of a fried panko / mango mixture. It was tall enough to make it impossible to eat in one go, and if eating in one piece was possible, its flavors and textures probably would have fused far better than they did. Most of the items on the menu are spicy, so if you're not into that, Sushi Mazi probably won't be to your liking. The space is also very tiny, so if you're concerned about the pandemic, it is probably best to visit early, before it gets busy.

Yelp
I've now been in twice & one time for takeout. The first time I went, I sat alone at the bar area & the owner & workers are so nice! We had great conversation & you can tell the owner really loves what he does -- such a grateful guy! He even remembered me the next time I came in too. Excellent service. I go out of my way to come here because of the gluten-free options & service! Just excellent. Highly recommend the spider roll too.

Yelp
Great service, location, ambiance and experience. Nice place to have in the neighborhood.

Yelp
The sushi is amazing and so are the people who work there. It's a perfect date night atmosphere with delicious sake. I love the crunchy rolls and basically any roll with salmon or tuna. One time, Chef Mark gave me an extra piece of tuna with a different sauce to see if I liked it. Such a wonderful experience.

Yelp
We went to Mazi last night for my birthday dinner and it nothing less than perfect. We did make reservation and were seated within 5 minutes. It's a small place so I recommend doing so to give the place a heads up. We ordered a great local unfiltered sake called Momo Kawa Pearl. We ordered edamame, miso, yellowtail nigiri, and two rolls. The miso came out with our sake, very nice touch and edamame came out shortly afterwards. The rolls followed and then our yellow tail, my only request would be to have my yellow tail before my rolls but that's just my personal preference of order:) There was only one server and he was on top of everything. The ambiance is cozy and warm, just a local vibe that makes you want to come back. We were there until closing and the owner made it a point to come out and say hello/ask how everything was/ & wished me a happy birthday! All around great service and very tasty sushi! We will be back, thank you!!

Yelp
From a New Yorker - Great sushi !!!! Good vibe. I liked the Sushi chef recommendations from unfiltered saki to sushi

Yelp
Absolutely incredible. Such a wonderful experience all around. The sushi was so fresh, out of this world. The aged tuna is a MUST. Service was fantastic, very friendly staff. Very clean and beautiful restaurant. Chef Mark came to greet us at the end. We were truly blown away, I would recommend this to anyone look for sushi - also great for take out! Definitely coming back, the best sushi I've had in the states by far! Thank you for a wonderful experience I cannot speak highly enough. Also the sake selection was great! You need to go here!!!

Tiffany M.

Yelp
The location is a hidden gem. Good sake selection. Every dish was amazing. Staff was friendly and helpful. Highly Recommend!

Yelp
The presentation of the food is impeccable. Each dish is artistically presented and tastes amazing. I want to try everything!

Yelp
Wow! Intimate setting, beautiful decor, perfect for date night. I brought a few staff members here for an impromptu birthday celebration and it was such a perfect find! I can't recommend enough!
google avatar

Yelp
PSA: Guys, there are TWO different locations with the same name. Notice that the interior pics of this place represent two different decor! I don't know if it's because of this mix-up of reviews that I've been let down with the high ratings by fellow Yelpers. I've been craving sushi since the onslaught of covid-19, and I finally decided to splurge on a dinner for myself. But man, I was very disappointed by the two sushi rolls I splurged on ($33 for a party of 1!). The roll presentation was nice and large rolls enough for two people. However I was disappointed by the lack of flavor - fish quality was over-shadowed by the over abundance of rice. Disproportionate amount of rice:fish ratio, I should say. Even though I ordered two very different rolls (golden dragon roll, and water ave roll), the two tasted about the same. The tempura inside the sushi was a bad idea, as it came out mushy by the time I ate my rolls ~10 mins later. Spicy-loving people would be let down by the lack of spice in the Water Ave roll. Nice guy taking orders and nice interior design though, but I wouldn't come back again.

Yelp
A very solid sushi spot, not the most expensive but prices aren't outrageous either. The sushi was pretty fresh and well made and they were very generous with the salmon skin for the salmon skin salad. I also got the cucumber salad- fresh, but a little too sour for my liking. Very fast and convenient for ordering take out!
google avatar

Yelp
I was excited to try Sushi Mazi, since it came highly recommended by others. I ordered it for take out. I wish that I had listened to the few reviewers who mentioned that they were disappointed in Sushi Mazi's lack of flavor. I really wanted to love this. I had the Seared Fatty Salmon Nigiri, Hamachi tuna Nigiri, Salmon Nigiri, and Tamago Nigiri. The nigiri's rice was lacking the texture and flavor that you expect from sushi rice (via the rice vinegar); it was bland and flavorless. The fish itself did not taste as high quality or fresh as one would expect from a sushi restaurant. The Red Spider Roll was also flavorless, oily from the flakes, and rice wasn't the consistency you expect from sushi rice and a bit mushy. The tempura batter of the soft shell crab didn't seem fully cooked. It's rare that something is so bad that I won't eat it. The Chicken Katsu was dry and flavorless. My husband had a tuna roll, and he said that it wasn't good either. I wish that there was something positive that I could say about this meal, but my husband and I both found it to be very unappetizing. This might be the worst sushi I've ever had.

Yelp
One more fantastic family dinning experience at Sushi Mazi. Our top pick for sushi, and good friends! Love Chef Marc and lovely Polly.

Yelp
Cute little place but the owner Chef Mark makes the place. Friendly open and funny and yes he makes fantastic sushi! Fresh and sizable portions. Will be back every time we visit PDX! Super Rock and Roll was my favorite!!

Yelp
We picked up Sushi Mazi last weekend, so a disclaimer that this is a review of the takeout food (do to COVID19). The first thing to note is that the nigiri is priced on the menu as 1 piece. I have never seen that before, I thought nigiri was always 2 pieces. Anyway, just note that before you order cause otherwise everything seems cheap! Once you realize it's for 1 piece, I would say pricing is a little high. The food itself wasn't bad. We got a bunch of nigiri, a spider roll, and a few of the specialty nigiris. My husband liked those as they had interesting sauces and toppings but I prefer a cleaner and fresher taste of just the fish. The pieces were a generous size but overall the fish lacked flavor. The only exception was the salmon belly which was very tender and fresh. Otherwise it wasn't bad or fishy tasting, just kind of bland. I give 3 stars because they have a nice menu with other choices - maybe their rolls are better than the nigiri. We did like the salmon roll but it was only 5 pieces which is somewhat small. Overall I would probably try again if I wanted rolls or speciality nigiri, but for plain fish I would try elsewhere.

Yelp
sushi mazi is closed with no sign of reopening! we went to eat on 4/6/2023 and it is boarded up!

Yelp
Very excellent, beautiful sushi! They have real crab and happy they also had yellow tail. Their Sake selection wonderful and they can recommend something to match your taste. Order pickup you want be disappointed.

Yelp
Best sushi in town. The chef mark is truly an artist. We have been going to sushi mazi for 5 years and have not found any sushi that compares.

Yelp
Best place for Sushi in Portland hands down! Not too pricey, great happy hours, awesome service. Did I mention the sushi is freaking amazing!!!

Emily M.

Yelp
This place is fire!! The chef is one of a kind, the ambience is amazing and the food.....to die for! We had the grasshopper sushi, the aged tuna, salmon skins, and so much more. This is an experience and worth checking out!
google avatar

Yelp
If you're familiar with Sushi Mazi and their grasshopper sushi on Division, this is their latest addition: Sushi Mazi Tengoku. Tengoku literally means heaven or paradise. Will your taste buds have a heavenly experience here? Hell (heaven) yea!!! I came here several times for lunch during soft opening (grand opening in May 2017). Excellent taste and great fish quality just like at their first location. But what you need to do is dinner; as a chef and owner, Marc's motivation and main focus to open a second location is to be able to give his creativity free reign in haute cuisine: Omakase. It runs around $75 plus minus per person depending on what Marc can provide that day. It's currently by reservation only: Monday, Friday and Saturday. Presentation is top notch, your eyes are going to eat first - definitely. The same applies to flavor, outstanding combination of seasoning and perfect balance of unique flavors and textures. Add fresh high-quality fish to it and the magic unfolds: * Cod miso soup: Delightful, miso's earthy flavor meets fresh cod. * Salmon mango spring roll with wasabi mayo-based sauce: That sauce! Ridiculously good! Get more of it on the side! * Sashimi: The chili oil soy sauce mix added an interesting Chinese flair to the fish. * Salmon and scallops marinated for two days: OMG that was my favorite. The buttery salmon flavor turned into smoky, nutty deliciousness. So so freaking good!! * Three Tuna variants: Pleasurable sensation that ranges from salty to sweet. Variety is key to stimulation. * Uni and Uni rice: Om nom nom nom; the sea. * Seared Tuna: Juicy and mouth-melting. * Mango ice cream: Who doesn't like ice cream? Will I be back? You bet, it's like two minutes from my desk. But more important I love seeing people passionate about their craftsmanship. Chef Marc turns food into art that can be seen, smelled and tasted. Kudos to you, sir.

Yelp
Sushi, sake, and poke meet a cute Portland-inspired atmosphere in the new Sushi Mazi location in the southeast industrial district. Very fresh fish, creative rolls, and great service. And by creative rolls, I mean creative! One of the rolls incorporates pop rocks and another uses fried grasshoppers. But of course there are tons of staples for those who aren't quite that brave. The menu is similar to their other location, and includes Poke bowls and lunch specials. The SE industrial district is known for its unique food spots, and the new Sushi Mazi fits right in.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Excellent sushi! The sushi is incredible!! The menu and staff are extremely accommodating for various allergies (gluten free, vegetarian and vegan). It's one of our favorite sushi spots in Portland and it also transports very well for takeout. We highly recommend everyone stop in for one of their amazing rolls. The non-sushi items are also very delicious....basically everything on the menu is a must try :)

Yelp
We were on a 55 minute waitlist when we went for a walk and came across Sushi Mazi...WINNER! We sat down right away and received service immediately. My husband ordered a myriad of sushi and we ordered our daughter a chicken teriyaki plate. Her plate came with a big portion of grilled chicken and fresh roasted veggies plus rice and miso. Everything was delicious and the sushi was amazing! Big portions, flavorful and reasonably priced!

Yelp
Came here for lunch. Good lunch specials - I got 5 piece nigiri and crunchy spicy tuna, plus choice of salad or miso soup, for $15. One star off because nigiri set came with cooked shrimp which I consider to be "filler sushi." Other four pieces were pretty standard - tuna, salmon, red snapper, and seared salmon, all made well with decent fish to rice ratio (maybe a bit too much rice). Presentation was nice, and the atmosphere is lovely too. Dinner man ruins very creative. And YES, they have a diaper changing station in the bathroom. Overall a solid choice.

Yelp
To be fair on this review, I have to say that living in a city like Las Vegas ruined me for sushi. AYCE food is definitely a sin that creates a high sushi standards. For starters, our server Peter was amazing. Super attentive and answered any questions we had and offered plenty of choices for a late lunch eat. The food: Meh, I get super disappointed when you're paying for extra quality sushi. And then it takes about 20 bites to chew your food because they just over stuff it with rice. I mean seriously. Fish should be one of the highlight flavors and then you just lose the whole essence of sushi and what it represents by trying to cut corners on cost. I had the unagi bowl and my bf and I shared the yellowtail roll and he also did a lunch special. Our total ended up being about $49 for mediocre food. He was pretty happy but I just felt like the abundance of rice really ruined it for me. There was nothing to leave me wanting more. A few hours later the rice kept expanding and it gave me an awful stomach ache. Even when I'm desperate in my sushi craving. I don't know about paying $10 a plate for lack luster food.
google avatar

Aaron J.

Yelp
Ok so this was a hard review for me to write. First off the good/great: there aged tuna and eel with strawberry on top are just out of this world, super unique flavor and you can tell that whoever is creating the menu understands how these flavors work together. The part that makes this hard for me was the rice. The rolls have great and unique combinations of fish. It's way different than most places in portland and reminds me of combos I would put together when I was working at a sushi bar in college. But back to the rice. It was just either way overcooked or over handled, it was just mushy and made it hard to fully enjoy the rolls. The nigiri and roll selection are just to unique to not try again, so i will for sure be giving them another shot. If it just happened to be an off night and the rice improves this would be one of my favorite spots in portland. I'd recommend trying it if you want to check if the rice happened to be an off night, and I will for sure update this if the rice improves!

Yelp
Sushi Mazi is a intimate little sushi restaurant, located in the burgeoning strip mall located on Division, just off of 21st street. I decided to check to make them my next stop on my "rate all sushi establishments in Portland" project as they are walking distance from my house. After first checking out their website, I was happy to discover they are one of Portland's few sushi spots that are open on Sundays and they have happy hour 4:30 - 6:00 every day (except Mondays, which is the only day they are closed). Sushi Standards Rating Scale: What I ordered: calamari appetizer, two salmon nigiri, eel with avocado roll, and a Thai iced tea (all off the happy hour menu) Total Cost: $18 (before tip) Décor: The restaurant is beautiful, with many contemporary touches. It is clear they take pride in their presentation. [5 stars] Creativity: Their menus (yes there are several) offer a great deal of creativity. I am definitely curious about their real grasshopper nigiri. I don't know if I have the guts to try it, but I am definitely tempted. [5 stars] Presentation: I am thrilled to finally find a sushi restaurant in Portland who truly offers artistry in their presentation. Everything I was served (as well as every plate I saw go by) was beautiful. [5 stars] Freshness: The freshness of everything was top notch. [5 stars] Taste: The salmon was incredible and clearly the best cuts I've had in a long time, the eel roll's flavor was complex, but not overdone, the Thai iced tea was perfect, my only disappointment was the calamari, as it was a bit overcooked and therefore dry. [4.5 stars] Sustainability: I can not speak directly to the fish, but I was impressed to see they use bamboo, rather than wooden disposable chopsticks. And yet, they use paper napkins. [3 stars] Service: The server was friendly enough, but she seems a bit overburdened as the only sever until shortly before the end of my meal. Once help arrived, her demeanor greatly improved. [4 stars] Bang for your buck: They are clearly on the more expensive end of what I am accustom to paying at sushi restaurants, however they are also clearly hands above most sushi restaurants I've visited. The only thing I feel was overpriced was the calamari - $6 (happy hour price) for dry calamari feels a bit too much for me, however, if it was better prepared I would say it was a reasonable price. [4.5 stars] Overall: While there are some improvements that could be made here, I am happy to call Sushi Mazi the best sushi I have had thus far in Portland. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
My husband Eddie and I live in Northern California, and I've been a sushi devotee for 25 years. We come to Portland several times a year to see family and we ALWAYS include a stop at Sushi Mazi. In fact, tonight we came here with my sister 30 minutes after hitting town! Before finding Sushi Mazi, we tried a dozen or so other PDX sushi places, but this is the best by far--We've stopped even trying other options because they are always a disappointment in comparison. Marc and his wife are gracious and inviting. Even though we only come in 3-4 times a year, Marc always remembers us and takes time to come out from behind the sushi bar to talk and catch up. The environment is inviting and warm. Most importantly, the sushi is fresh and portions are generous. There are a range of classic rolls on the menu and a good assortment of nigiri and sashimi. Marc is very creative as well, always offering unique and tasty combinations on a special menu (tonight's included an incredible fatty salmon sashimi with creamy wasabi and chocolate sauce--surprisingly balanced and flavorful). Top it off with great appetizers (the octopus dumplings were remarkably light, tender, and savory), an extensive sake menu (including organic, unfiltered, 3-4 nigori, and 10 or so other hot or cold options in three sizes) and reasonable prices, and this place cannot be beat. I know we will be returning to Sushi Mazi on our next Portland visit. If you're looking for sushi, this should be your choice.

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Do you tell people about amazing food or do you keep it to yourself? Chef Marc is a gem amongst the growing Portland bustle. Arrive with patience and anticipation. If you sit at the chef's bar, Surrender to his choices. How do you prove to strangers this is some of the best sushi out there? Sushi Mazi is a must.
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding and inventive sushi! always beautifully presented and very tasty and some of the best in town! In a word go!
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and shocked at the recent one star review. Every time has been amazing! Marc and his staff have always been super friendly and the food is always excellent. Last week I brought a friend from LA to try the place out and Marc happened to be there. He welcomed me by name, recommended a local sake, and made us a "chef's choice" roll after we ordered a couple off the menu. Everything was perfect and I feel bad for not taking pictures of the food. I love the pop rock roll and the new cotton candy additions! He's super creative and loves his work. Don't buy into the one-off fake reviews by people who don't even use their real names. They probably were expecting conveyer belt prices at a made to order gourmet restaurant.

Yelp
We decided to try this place out and we're extremely disappointed. I'm all for supporting smaller establishments but 2 of the more expensive rolls we ordered had a VERY off-putting aftertaste. I can't even bare to eat the Volcano roll at all, and not because of the spice. I'm sorry to say I would never recommend anyone go here. There are plenty of other sushi places in Portland.

Yelp
Searching for sushi on a Tuesday night...first attempt, Ichidai--closed; second attempt, Yoko--closed. Okay, what else is around the area? Sushi Mazi, how long has that been there? We decided to give it a try and it was open! Surprised to find that the restaurant wasn't busy around dinner time, the benefit is that there are plenty of tables available and you could seat yourself. Service was quick. I just wanted nigiri but they didn't have any combo or specials and it was expensive to order it individually to be filling enough so I ended up settling on two signature rolls instead. The Crunchy Green Dragon Roll and Salmon Lover Roll. We shared an assortment of shrimp and vegetables tempura. The tempura was more golden and had a thicker batter...not the typical lightness that I was expecting. However, a couple of the tempura were bananas which was a pleasant surprise once we figured out what it was--at first, I couldn't place it because I wasn't expecting fruit in my tempura. The rolls were good but pretty standard and the cost is on the high end ($15/roll). It wasn't hard to get the server's attention since there weren't many diners. The staff and sushi chef kind of stand around watching you eat, it was a little awkward. Nice and clean space. I definitely would eat here again, however, wouldn't be my first choice for sushi.

Yelp
Just stumbled upon this little sushi spot and I their sushi was so fresh and flavorful. The waiter was super sweet and it was all around a wonderful dining experience. I went in with no expectations and came out full and happy.

Yelp
Went in for the happy hour menu, that ends at 6pm. We had mussels, a couple of rolls and the grasshopper sushi, which was the main reason behind trying the restaurant. All the sushi rolls were delicious, and the rice didn't fall apart like a lot of other sushi places. Service was good, though we did have a couple of slowdowns on one dish and had to ask twice where the dish was. One beer and some sake, the total bill was $42, which is reasonable. We'll be back!

Yelp
The only places I go for sushi in Portland are Sushi Mazi on SE Madison (for my power workday lunches) and Sushi Mazi on SE Division. Chef Marc is so welcoming, and he clearly has a lot of pride in his craft. I've never eaten anything from Sushi Mazi that isn't beautifully presented, fresh, and delicious. With the amazing food, unpretentiously sleek ambiance, and wonderful people, Chef Marc's restaurant locations are a definite go-to! I've taken friends and colleagues to Sushi Mazi, and all have consistently sung the same praises that I do. I will continue to support their business, and I truly hope you check both locations out if you haven't already!!

Yelp
Some of the best sushi in the city is right here. The fried oyster was especially amazing. Also the ambiance is great and Chef Mazi is a wonderful person. Definitely coming back soon.

Yelp
First, Iwant to mention, it's very clean in here. The staff are very friendly and service is reasonably quick. Now, I'm not a sushi expert by any means. It's happy hour and I ordered a tuna roll and a salmon skin roll. The rice is quite vinegary. Other than that, the sushi is pleasantly tasty. Nothing too exciting. It's a quick stop for me as I make my way to another venue.

Yelp
My absolute favorite restaurant in town. Hands down. I am always scheming on ways in which I can get myself near there to treat myself. It's tiny, but packs a mighty wallop o' goodness! Chef Marc and his staff always amaze me with their kindness, talent, creativity, and generosity. They often share a little extra bite from the menu which I appreciate. Gives me a chance to try something I may never have experienced. And it's always outstanding. Some of my favorite items are seasonal so you have to make them priorities! Like the pistachio-crusted spicy tuna roll and ginger tempura. Very hard to stop eating either. And I have been known to order seconds! Yep, I am that gal. ;) Favorites always on the menu : cucumber salad, spicy crunchy tuna roll, Buddha delite roll, red beets roll, and sunset roll. And I have yet to have a sashimi that is as generous and thick cut as theirs. Outstanding! On top of it all they have gluten-free options across the menu and are great at accommodating for food sensitivities and allergies. AND they added a poke menu. I think I have found heaven on earth. ;) I clearly cannot say enough about the team at Sushi Mazi. They rock!

Yelp
This place was great! The food was delicious, great happy hour, reasonably priced for the quality. Service could've definitely been better, but the food was so good I didn't really mind the slow service. This is a great place for anyone that is gluten free. They usually have gluten free gyoza, but were out tonight. Which actually worked out because we got the veggie tempura instead and it was some of the best I've had! It wasn't soggy at all! really enjoyed the roll I got, can't remember the exact name, but it was the first on the fancy roll list. Snow crab and avocado topped with salmon and avocado. Also got the special salmon sanjuku and it was SO GOOD. highly recommend!
