Sushi Momento is the new sushi place in town. In fact, it's so new that the place still had an air of fresh paint (not the most pleasant smell...). I came on a Saturday night, craving good sushi, and sat down at their sushi counter at 8:30pm looking forward to something exciting.
Here's what we ordered:
-Chicken Karage: Tasted good flavor wise, had spicy mayo drizzled on top, but lacked the appropriate crunch.
-Seaweed salad: Came out too sweet and therefore didn't feel as fresh and refreshing as I like. Somehow just lacked the natural acidity of the seaweed.
-Braised mushroom: Tasted good, simple soy sauce flavor, good variety of mushroom, think maitake, crimini and others.
-Rock Shrimp: Deep fried small shrimps with a salt and pepper (and maybe some other spicier spice) flavoring. I'm not sure that I liked this dish. The shrimp came out a bit gluey due to the batter it was fried in. I wish they had fried it tempura style. That being said, my boyfriend ate the entire dish.
-Chef's Combination: This is a big plate of nigiris (salmon, maguro tuna, sea bream), sashimi (yellowtail, maguro, salmon, sea bream, scallop, mackerel), and a cucumber wrapped roll that had avocado and a mix of fishes. While the fishes were tasty for the most part (the scallops weren't super fresh), this was very much a typical/average plate that you can find at many of your usual lower-cost sushi locations. Don't expect to be impressed by the flavors or the setup of the plate. $80 price tag was a little steep for the plate. Next time I'll probably just stick to ordering individual nigiris and sashimis.
-Drinks: We ordered the one $10 Japanese wheat beer they have, which tasted great. Also tried a shochu that had matcha flavor infused. I would probably stay away from it as it tasted pure alcoholic and I could find the matcha flavor at all.
Overall, this place did not quite come close to the expectations I had, but the chef spoke with us and told us about where his ingredients come from (all the fish is flown in straight from Tsukiji market twice a week) and also about future additions to the menu they got planned.
So I would give this place some time and will make sure to go back in a couple months.
