Sushi Of Gari Tribeca Review - Tribeca - New York - The Infatuation

"Is it really necessary for us to review another outpost of Sushi Of Gari considering our love for this place is well documented? Probably not. However, we just dropped a truck load of cash at the Tribeca outpost, so we’re definitely going to need a review out of this deal. Apologies if we sound like a broken record here, but, when it comes to omakase in NYC, Gari remains one of the best. And speaking of the much maligned sushi scene of NYC, it can actually be pretty damn impressive. If you’re rich. For us, there are few culinary pleasures in life that exceed sushi bar swagging at Gari, watching an old master fish sculptor slice up some heavenly creations destined for our bellies. Sushi at Gari isn’t simple, and it certainly ain’t cheap, but the inventive ideas they come up with are on par with intricate entrees at a five star restaurant, all executed on a small pieces of raw fish. We only do it once in a blue moon, because if we went as much as we wanted to, we’d be broke. While we’ll always hold Gari in high regard, the quality of their newer reproductions has been slipping a bit. While we were sad to see strange, pre-packaged Gari sushi available down in The Plaza Food Court, we were less bummed about its recent Tribeca annex. After all, it makes sense. Fishing in the sea of deep pockets is smart money. Unfortunately, this Gari location is our least favorite yet. The downstairs dining room is completely sterile, and while the upstairs sushi bar is serving up their signature deliciousness, it just doesn’t feel the same. That, and the toilet isn’t as high tech as the one on the UES. We’ve come to expect greatness not only from your fish, Gari, but from your toilets. Photo Credit: Gandhu & Sarah on Flickr Food Rundown Omakase Sure, there’s a whole menu of rolls, sushi and sashimi, but the only way to go here is omakase. We come back time and time again for the sushi fluke with quail egg, the salmon in onion sauce with torched tomato tartare, the diced sea eel with avocado, the sliced big clam in basil, and tuna topped with tofu. Once all is said and done, if you do it right, the final bill should run you in the $120 a pop range. And it’s worth it." - Andrew Steinthal

Exquisite Omikasa, well presented, good pace and tasty! Sake selections were very good (just the right size can be ordered) and went well with the fish. Service was attentive, all dishes were explained thoroughly and special requests were accommodated. Restaurant decor is minimal and functional - seating was comfortable and tables were not on top of each other.

Just wow’d by this place! The omakase dinner was a huge chefs kiss, the service top notch, clean and pleasant location!! All the rolls were fresh and their chicken wings were very delicious not too fried just perfect! Would recommend

Google
My top 3 sushi spots ever. Started going to Gari on the upper east side since 1998. He was the first to offer omakase that I know of and his untraditional creative and genius pieces were groundbreaking. A lot of his disciples wind up copying his recipes and opening their own restaurants elsewhere. Sushi Seki worked for Gari and copied half the menu less than a mile away from him. I would make my staff sign NDA’s if I was him. I only sit at the bar and let them know I prefer more sushi and cooked pieces like the baked oyster, tomato salmon, seared scallops and just about everything else untraditional. Highly highly recommend Gari

Google
If you’re looking for some place that presents an extraordinary style of sushis & Omakase, this is the right place for you. Sushi of gari has their own style of presenting foods or using various kinds of ingredients which escalates the quality of the dishes. Every fishes are so fresh, it gives you a big satisfaction when it gets into your mouth. This tribeca location is the most recently renovated one, so that’s the other fun part to visit. And you’ll meet the most amazing staffs who would make your experience even better. Highly recommend!

Google
Amazing omakase! This location never disappoints me and tastes amazing every time I go. The manager Jenny is always attentive and goes out of her way to accommodate us since we have a baby. The staff is always nice. Chef koichiro and chef Peng are both amazing. My favorite is the tuna with tofu paste and chili sauce.

Had the privilege is enjoying this amazing Omakase. Each piece was perfectly prepared and presented. We especially loved the medium fatty tuna. The way it melted in your mouth leaving this amazing umami flavor left me craving for seconds. Dessert was a red bean fish also excellent.

Google
This was a small busy sushi restaurant- I was quite surprised that the sushi omakase was generally bland and not memorable. The omakase consists of 12 prices of sushi - and if you’re sitting in general dining, and not at the sushi counter, it comes out 4 pieces at a time. The dishes just fell flat for the price - even the rice was cold by the time the dishes made their way to the table. The different tuna pieces were the best. Uni is included in the omakase. In a city with so many omakase options, this one was not memorable. The service was attentive, but all business. For the name and price, I expected better. Perhaps you have to stick with the upper east side location for good sushi.

I dream about having this omakase again - truly fine dining. A lovely friend gave us a giftcard to Gari and it’s definitely been one of the most memorable experiences yet.

Yelp
I've been going to Garis for over 25 years. Gari is a true artist and his sushi recipes have been copied all over the world by his ex employees. Sushi Seki is a classic example of someone who counterfeited the recipe and made it seem like he came up with them himself. Gari needs to make his kitchen staff sign NDAs. His recipes are truly unique and genius. I always sit at the bar and request more seared pieces in the omakase. As a matter of fact I believe Gari is one of if not the first sushi spot in NY to offer omakase. He's a true original and a very talented artist / chef. My only complaint is the price. Our check was over $500 even though we didn't drink. I guess you have to pay for quality but geez that was almost the price of our hotel room

Yelp
Booked two weeks in advance for Valentine's Day and have to say it was very disappointing. We specifically booked upstairs but got seated in the restaurant downstairs there was zero ambiance not even music playing. Being sat downstairs would of been fine if there was a menu but you literally had to do the $180 per person omakase. We definitely were given an omakase experience while sitting at a table and with the wait of the sushi coming from the bar to the table downstairs it definitely lost a lot of flavor. The servers were nice but extremely disorganized. We were never told of the specials on the menu that evening but the table next to us got a whole list of specials told to them. All and all this ruined our Valentine's Day.

Yelp
Good quality sushi for a reasonable price. still gets expensive (our tab including 2 appetizers and sushi and sashimi dinners . one beer..still ran to about $160) food and restaurant are minimalist presented. its a small place so best to make a reservation. -side note. we went to another cheaper sushi restaurant around the corner two days later . although we paid probably half the price, it would have been much more worth it to just dine at Sushi of Gari that night again. its not Nobu its not Yasuda but you get good quality reasonably priced sushi.

Yelp
Great sushi spot! We had reservations and were seated promptly. The staff were welcoming and friendly. What we had: -Shumai dumplings: very good and juicy. -salad: fresh and dressing was perfect. -sushi combo: fresh and tasty. For the vegetarians: there are not a lot of options for you here. (My friend is a vegetarian). The restaurant is on the smaller side and tables are a bit close together. I think this is a great casual sushi spot good for the occasional visit if you're in the area.

Yelp
Great for Omakase and intimate setting. Fish was extremely fresh and they add unique toppings. Will come back many times.

Yelp
I took my mom here for her 66th birthday and got the omakase. She said it was the best meal she'd ever had-- sumptuous and delicious, healthy, perfect portions, flavorful without soy sauce. The sea urchin and tuna sushi dishes are especially good.

Yelp
I came here for a birthday dinner on a Friday night. We ordered the clam soup, special nigiri (salmon with roasted tomato, tuna with mustard), shrimp tempura handroll, sushi regular set (8 pieces + 1 tuna roll), and the sashimi dinner set (14 pieces of sashimi). There's a minimum of 2 pieces if you want to order nigiri a la carte. It was strange that they didn't provide a bowl of rice with sashimi. The fish was fresh and prepared well. I really enjoyed the special nigiri the most, mainly the salmon with roasted tomato. It was an interesting combination that's not found at other sushi places. They gave us a free birthday green tea ice cream which was nice. Service was very attentive and friendly. Also, they have a Japanese style toilet where the seat is warm and you can adjust the water settings. I would come back and try their other special nigiri.

Yelp
Tucked away in TriBeCa is a little sushi joint near Duane Street where the special is the chef choice, which is deemed omakase- aka 'leaving it up to you'. The offerings were to be novel tastes prepared by the chef that otherwise wouldn't be available at standard establishments. There were a variety of offerings using everything from sea bass to tempura to salmon and tuna, and while interesting they weren't particularly unique, albeit quite pricey. The service was attentive however, and the green tea actually quite good. As well, there is a moderately extensive sake list from which to choose if one is so inclined, even junmai and honjozo for warm nihonshu lovers.

Yelp
I wanted to love Sushi of Gari so much because of how hyped up it was, but it fell flat versus my expectations. Given how pricey omakase at Gari can get, I was pretty disappointed by how they missed on the details. Don't get me wrong--there were several pieces that were deliciously memorable and the service was totally on point, so still a ~3.75/5 overall when factoring in value. First off, the cons: - Probably the worst sushi rice at an omakase place I've had. It was far too vinegary and overwhelmed the fish. - The fish... mostly all tasted the same. Granted, it's because they used a lot of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and red snapper and there was much more emphasis on the toppings rather than the fish itself. - Completely subjective, but truffle oil?! At Gari's price point, shouldn't there be actual truffles?! That aside, my favorite pieces were definitely the marinated salmon, snow crab with uni (which made me ask if there was cheese in it because it had so much earthy umami), tuna with roasted tomato (careful not to burn your mouth), miso black cod, and torched fatty tuna. The omakase here doesn't seem to have a set price... you just keep eating until you're full. I had 20 pieces and was absolutely stuffed, so I think the average person can be satisfied with 16-18 and probably 12-14 for those with smaller appetites. The pieces are quite large versus other more traditional omakase places.

Patricia S.

Yelp
I eat a lot of sushi. Since Japan I have not had sushi this good. Don't order rolls. Order the Omakase plate. The chef gives it to you ready to eat. No soy sauce. Just enjoy.

Yelp
The Tribeca location is for me the best one out of them all. I love their Omakase flight and the price although it has been considerably increased in the last year its still what keeps me coming back

Yelp
this is the worst restaurant experience ive ever had in tribeca. the host was severely unprofessional. they are racist. they sent my other friend to the nice bathroom and they sent me to the wrong bathroom in the basement that was disgusting compared to the normal customer restroom. do not dine here!!!

Yelp
This place still has quality in understated digs. You walk into someone's living room that has too many tables and wonder how you got a last minute reservation in the first place. We didn't opt for the chef's omakase menu so no sushi bar. It was very cold and we warmed up with green tea. We were surprised by the 4oz sake pricing that felt like it should be for the 8oz or 16oz. I told my friend it's the uncharge for being here but it didn't motivate us to order any saki. Food - the starters of shumai, sushi pieces, and rolls that followed were very fresh and flavorful. We ordered some side rolls (spicy scallop and squid with ume & shiso leaf). We were pleasantly surprised and we even found a way to share sushi pieces (unheard of) since we didn't want be too full but wanted to experience the tastes.

Yelp
Pre-COVID we went for the omakase at the sushi bar upstairs which was a phenomenal meal with spot-on service. Since the pandemic, we've ordered takeout from there multiple times and the food's always amazing quality and prepped quickly. It's one of our weekly go to spots! Favorite food orders: black and white sesame chicken wings, Gari's special, all of the signature sushi, signature rolls, panna cotta with passion fruit dessert

Yelp
Came here on a postponed Valentines Date and was super excited that my boyfriend was going to have his first Omakase experience. When I saw the yelp rating, I was surprised to see it lower than the other Garis but upon arriving, I can see why. The restaurant ambiance was not as impressive as we had hoped. However, the food was still spot-on. We sat on the first floor and did not realize there was a second floor until we left. I would try and avoid the first floor if possible as it is very closed and confined and you have no view of any sushi chefs. It kind of took away the magic. We had a choice between a menu or the omakase but chose the omakase. Why else would you come! (actually I legitimately heard the table next to me say that they don't eat fish...wrong place to eat bro. Needless to say, he got a California Roll). We started off with some miso soup which was tasty and refreshing. Then the Omakase started, which ended being about $110 each for 12 pieces, including tuna, salmon, yellowfin, oyster, lobster, foie gras, trout and mackerel. It was great. This was my boyfriend's first try of actual good quality sushi and he could tell the difference immediately. We started off with tuna and it just literally melted in our mouth and everything just got better as we progressed. It was great. Everything was great! Each piece was accompanied with a different topping or sauce, making everything pop uniquely. The service was very attentive as well. Overall a great experience with delicious food! Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
My favorite sushi place in NYC (5+ stars for the exceptional good food, 3.5 stars for the ambiance). They literally expand the dimensions of my sushi tasting experience. Those sushi plates always impress me no matter how many times I have been there. I'm not big about ambiance, for me the food quality and state matter most. That being said, TriBeCa location is small and simple but I still LOVE it because of the great taste of every single piece of sushi. Among all the choices, tuna platter and sushi platter deluxe are my favorites. The good variety of different mix of texture, taste and how the fish is prepared makes the whole dining experience fun and inspiring. It's amazing how they present and combine the everyday dishes like silk tofu, eggplant, raw tuna, seared tuna, and etc. The tastes and the experience is hard to put into words, but if I have to describe it to you. I will put it this way - amazing, creative, spaceless, and fresh. Their great food quality kept me going back. Love to bring any of my sushi-lover friends here.

Sat upstairs for omakase at the sushi bar. Pretty expensive but the sushi was delicious!

Yelp
First time being in Tribeca, and first time choosing to do Omakase instead of ordering off the menu. I do not regret trying this in NYC! My amazing date wanted to open my eyes to something that is not normal in Louisiana. He texted me the address of the restaurant and told me not to look up the restaurant. He said, "Come and enjoy. You are the love of my life." Ok...fine, he didn't say the latter. He just told me to come have lunch with him. Lol (what can I say? I'm a romantic Libra!) When you walk in, there is a dining area to your left. I saw a few tables occupied by men in business suits, and women in chic business wears. The hostess informed us that they were booked for regular dining but omakase is available upstairs. The stairs to our right took us to the 2nd floor where only a handful of other customers sat around a sushi bar. The rest of the experience was amazing. One after the other, presentations and tastes were 5 stars rating. I'm not saying this was the best omasake in all of NY, but for my first time...it was an amazing experience. I can't remember what each item was, I was too busy waiting for the next. Lol (ps- no recording allow, only pictures).

Yelp
I don't like to leave bad reviews. But I'm shaking thanks to my treatment at this establishment. I've been here many times. I tip well, 20 percent after tax. I've recommended it!!! On here! My boyfriend and I walked in. 8pm on a Wednesday. No wait for a table. Three empty tables surrounding us. We decline wine. Not drinking. Maybe we'd get one at the end of dinner. We were on the fence. We order an app and two rolls . The waiter says ok. Comes back to say there's a 20 dollar minimum per person. Mortified, not that hungry, and feeling pressure to drink, we ask to order one more food item to make it work. Our waiter announces we've only made 36 dollars of the 40 dollar minimum. You heard that right. My boyfriend tells him to just charge us 40 and this is ridiculous. I refuse that and insist we leave. Anyone who knows me describes me as an insanely nice person. To be treated this way, on a slow night when we were trying to be accommodating is just beyond comprehension. And sorry Gary, your dining room has gone to shit and you're not the only game in TriBeCa. Way too many great sushi places have opened near you. Treat your customers right. We would have been in and out. Not hogged the spot. Tipped well and been on our way. I also work close and know the industry spots nearby and will be spreading the word. I have never felt so horribly treated and by such a mediocre place.... you deserve failure. There's no excuse for how disgusting that was.

Yelp
Just simply the best Omikase I've ever had. Anywhere. Upstairs is where it's at. The chefs cook and prepare each sushi piece like the works of art they are.

Yelp
We came back for a second visit last night and it was wonderful. Our sushi was fresh and very tasty. We sat on the lower level. I had no idea there was a top level until my daughter told me today. Either way...super fresh.

Yelp
Birthday month came and a special birthday dinner reservation was made. I was asked if Sushi of Gari would be a place I'd like to celebrate a special number. Silly me, thinking about what I heard years ago from a trusted friend that it's worth it, said Yes. Complete mistake. We were seated at the bar. Very close to the bathroom? I expected a casual ambience but still with the elegance of a high end Omakase restaurant. Never got that. Throughout our meal there were noise that I'm not even sure what or where it was coming from. There isn't a specific price point. The chef will serve you until you tell him you've had enough and that's when they will surprise you with how much you ate. Kind of weird and scary at the same time. It wouldn't have mattered if every piece served was at least at par with what you actually pay for. Unfortunately, every piece didn't meet any kind of expectation. The salmon and tomato nigiri was almost inedible. I couldn't taste anything other than the huge tomato on top of it. Toro was a huge cut of fish but it didn't even excite us, too bland and was cut sloppily. I was so disappointed that even when I was served with Uni, I couldn't bring myself to liking it. What's more disappointing was that I read reviews beforehand and I actually thought the negative review that was left was a bit harsh. I was so wrong. Never. Ever.

Yelp
Amazing Omakase! Went there this past Friday and had an amazing dinner with a friend. Everything was super fresh, we were seated right away, and left full and happy. Love that they have a great wine list as well! Will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Taste of Japanese Sea Urchin was so awesome - kind of sweet and not bitter at all, though our waiter said California Sea Urchin was sweeter. Fatty Tuna was like melting in mouth. Wasabi and ginger were much fresher than other restaurants'. A small place but filled with ppl around 7pm on a weekday night.

Yelp
I came to this location with friends based on its popularity. We had the omakase experience downstairs since there was four of us and we wanted to still be able to talk to each other. There was no set price we started with 3 rounds which was a min of $100pp. Each person had 4 pieces of sushi each round so 12 pieces total. We ended up doing 5 rounds. The omakase was all solely sushi. The food was amazing. There were some that was melt in your mouth goodness and some that was absolutely tasted well together. There were some that was okay. Overall food was good. The pickled ginger they provided also tasted really good. Desert was alright. We had the mochi and taiyaki. Liked the taiyaki but a friend thought it was too fried/crispy. I on the other hand like that texture. Mochi was very typical. My boyfriend ate all the fruits that came on the plate since he isn't into desserts and said the fruits were fresh. Wait staff was also very attentive. We had order a bottle of sake which they helped us constantly fill our cups. Oh and because we were eating the ginger since it tasted so good they kept replenishing it for us as well. The atmosphere was like any small typical Japanese joint. Which isn't that appealing to me because I felt a little cramped when they started to get busier. Maybe with more space between tables it would feel more relaxing. We ended up with a bill of $250pp including tax and tips. And unfortunately my boyfriend was not satisfied with the amount of food and bought himself some Chipotle after. I thought the food and experience was amazing. But for the price there are other decent omakase places i can go to multiple times. I ultimately gave it 3 stars because it just wasn't that over the top for the price I had paid and i barely recall what I had already except for the words good. Would be nice to have it be memorable enough for me to remember what i had.

Yelp
After having done the Omakase at Gari Columbus on the Upper West Side, had high expectations for the Omakase at Sushi of Gari Tribeca and they did not disappoint. Overall the sushi perhaps was a little less creative than at Gari Columbus but nevertheless it was still excellent. It was pricey but worth it for the great sushi and the overall Omakase experience sitting at the sushi bar.

Yelp
Had this place bookmarked on yelp, and last week, I had the opportunity to dine here. I made a reservation via opentable and when we arrived, we were promptly seated at the dining area. When we arrived, it was pretty early, so there were quite a number of tables open. As we were finishing our meal, the restaurant's dining area got filled. For our meal, we opted for the omakase because we wanted to try omakase from different locations. Note, omakase can get pretty expensive, especially if you consider getting more sushi pieces. Omakase came with 12 different pieces of sushi, seasoned and flavored individually by the chef. If you want more, they would come out with 4 additional pieces. My fiance and I each had a total of 16 pieces. Each was unique and delicious in its own way. Definitely enjoyed and savored each piece. The total for the bill wasn't too expensive since it was worth the experience. Attentive workers came around to refill our water and take away things from our table. If possible, I would like to check out the bar omakase next time.

Yelp
Please take a look at the picture of my sushi... Its all rice and rolled very poorly. The sushi is not good and has a fishy taste. The service is nice and the store is clean. But these rolls were $9. Holy crap save your money and go anywhere else.
google avatar

Elaine H.

Yelp
Had done some research before dining and I was informed not to go with their omakase as the price quantity ratio was too low. Apparently I had made a right decision. Ordered the asparagus and tuna avocado as starters, miso soup to clear the palate, and eel roll, assorted sashimi as main dishes. The sashimi was a bit mediocre yet I enjoyed tuna avocado a lot. Overall a little bit over priced for a one-star rated Michelin, but worth going for at least once. The crepe was amazingly good, if you are a big fan of lady M.
google avatar

Kelsey A.

Yelp
One of the best meals I've ever had. My fiance took me for my birthday a few years ago and it blew my mind. Sushi is my favorite meal, but I'd never had sushi as good as this. We did the omakase, which is pricey but totally worth it for a special occasion. He's taking me back for our anniversary next week and I can't wait.

Yelp
It was kind of a last minute thing- a friend saved me from some-guy-hitting-on-me-with-a-terrible-pick-up-line by sending me a text, "Sushi of Gari? Got a reservation, but it's in only 10 minutes from now." Twist my arm. Club me over the head and drag me there. YES, OF COURSE I WILL RUN IN THE COLD TO MEET YOU THERE IN 10 MINUTES! If that had been the pickup line, the guy would have scored. Instead, I left in a rush to go put raw fish in my mouth. Simple, small, unassuming, intimate. I like that. True, things got a bit tight inside, but sometimes a little tightness doesn't hurt, you know what I mean? The omakase here was perfectly portioned- I didn't feel like the restaurant went over the top in an effort to "prove" itself, as many omakase meals seem to imply. The quail egg with yellow tail was pretty amazing, the toro was buttery smooth, and there were some pieces with jalapeno flair that really stole the show. The green tea was very nice on the cold day. The service was a bit odd- the waiter was difficult to understand, and seemed to only address me. He also went into lengths to ensure that we actually wanted to order the omakase, as if he wasn't sure we would know what it was. I appreciated the warning, but I just felt like it was unnecessary. Otherwise, the experience was excellent.
google avatar

Oliver C.

Yelp
The sushi was delicious but the lack of reasonably priced sake drove what should've been a moderately expensive omakase bill into the stratosphere. As others have mentioned, the seating and decor is pretty subpar and results in an ambiance that feels cheap. Also worth noting that this is Americanized/fusion sushi. It's the best iteration of that style I've seen but if you're after something more traditional this is not it. I am not sure what the purpose of going here would be. You can get tastier and more welcoming dining experiences elsewhere, for lower prices too...
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Everyone loves this place but I have no idea why. I've been to sushi of Gari three times (each of the locations) and have had negative experiences every time. The main issue was muscle fibers in the raw fish that made it impossible to chew it. This literally happened on three different occasions. YUCK. It's also extremely overpriced for low quality food.
google avatar

Yelp
Simply amazing! Unequivocally the very best sushi I have ever had. All four of us went with the omakase and even though the bill (with drinks) made our eyes bug out a little it was well worth it for this near spiritual sushi experience -- a meal here that will not be forgotten. Every piece of nigiri and sashimi was perfectly crafted, full of flavor, extremely tender and practically melted in my mouth. It really was one of those experiences where after eating every piece you would want to exclaim, "Oh my God!" and chuckle a little bit because of how ridiculously good it was. I've had great sushi numerous times before, but here everything was just better; the best actually. Even the medium fatty tuna (chu-toro) was much better than any o-toro that I have ever had before. The final course was a slightly seared piece of foie gras which was awesome since we can't get that in California anymore. Didn't leave full, but satisfied (stomach and soul).

Yelp
Went with my wife last night. This was our first time at a sushi of gari. When we arrived we were seated downstairs and the server described the format of the omakase option. She said the chef would tailor the courses to our preferences and that 10 pieces or sushi or sashimi would average about $120. (there is no fixed price omakase option) and you are meant to just tell the chef when you have eaten enough. The server moved us upstairs to the sushi bar after we decided to have the omakase option. We thought the food was very inventive and for that alone I would give 4 out of 5. The best course was the fluke with quail egg. I wasn't keen on the salmon and tomato though. The servers and chefs were pleasant. The ambience was just so so. We stopped eating at around 10 courses and expected the total cost to be 120 pp but the food came to 150 pp. I didn't appreciate the surprise pricing which is why I'm giving them 3 out of 5. We will not go back to this restaurant because of the lack of price transparency.

Yelp
Food was great and original! but overall dining environment and interior decor was way below it's class, especially for a high end Japanese restaurant. We ended up paying $600 for omakase for two, which was surprisingly expensive, but it wasn't the price that left us with negative feeling, it was the fact that the waiter never notified us when we reached the basic omakase cost which at most places it is a curtesy for servants to at least say "you have reached the $110 omakase minimum, would you like to continue?". We ended up starring at the check trying to remember if we really ate 22 pieces of sushi, but I guess there is no way to track. food was great but we we left with bas taste...

Yelp
It's a bit cramped, to say the least. Have you ever wanted to know what it's like to eat right next to a bathroom door? This is the place for you! And P2P (price to portions) ratio is wacky: get ready to pay like 9 bucks for 3 dumplings. But the sashimi is certifiably delicious, even if you won't eat lots of it, and it's not as big a scam as some of the other sushi places in the area. I've not had fatty tuna this good in some time.

Yelp
Delicious! All very fresh and mouth-watering. I can't generally afford sushi, so I admit to not being a connoisseur, but the person who took me there is, and she said she considers it the best in NYC. I've had sushi at quite a few places, and it was equal or better than any I've had. My review is not based on price as I was not paying, and really don't know the going rate for this stuff. But I've had mediocre and just-good sushi many times, and from the first mouthful, I could tell this was a cut way above. It was also quiet and perfect for a business lunch. I met my editor to discuss my book for 90 minutes and never had to struggle to hear or be heard. It was nice and cozy and well-suited for that.

Yelp
I've been here twice and both times had an amazing experience! The food is phenomenal and I'm always so impressed. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because the last time I went, the waiter we had (short hair with earrings), seemed completely out of it, I'd order and he'd repeat back completely wrong items and even left the iPad on our table after we had ordered. He also wouldn't explain the pieces we had gotten. The waiter we'd had the time before that, who had longer hair and who was from japan, was super nice and attentive! Overall though, an amazing culinary adventure. I recommend ordering a small amount of the omakase dishes a la carte and then doing sashimi.

Yelp
Had the Christmas dinner with a friend here. it was not full but relatively filled up. The decor was quite sterile but i guess it provided for a good environment to really enjoy the food. We were running 15 min late and called ahead to keep our reservation. had no issues there. We were given a warm hot towel after seated and a drink menu. It was a bit strange to not get the food menu at the same time but it's fine. After placing drink order, we were provided with the actual menu but we went with omakase. She asked us for any type of special food allergies, likes/dislikes (fish, foie gras, shrimp, shellfish, etc). A piece of cooked fish with marinated onions were our complimentary appetizer. pretty good but wasn't blown away. Then the magic experience starts. My 12 piece set came in 4 pcs of innovative yumminess. it was my first time there so really savored the flavor combinations. loved the grilled tomato on salmon! the one with the sauteed mushroom was yummy too. Friend devoured her dessert of green tea ice cream and said it was a good balance of bitterness/sweetness. Not inexpensive but definitely a place for special occasions and foodie cravings. * friend did mention that she liked the UES location better in terms of the cut of fish.. and some of my rice in the beginning was not as firm as i'd liked.

Yelp
Dropped in without a rez with hopes of an available table and were able to be seated immediately. Although they provide the things one expects at a sushi restaurant, it lacks character. The raw fish was quite good, orders are taken quickly, delivered quickly - to the point that it feels rushed. We noticed the sushi/sashimi menu is entirely in English - the words hamachi, unagi, toro, etc. are not prominent. Who cares is a reasonable response to that but, in some way the proprietor is sending a message - never seen that anywhere else. The main floor dining room decor is bland and the tables are tight. This did not feel like a Japanese experience. Would go back with expectations managed. Was expecting more of...something.

Yelp
Was very disappointed and unimpressed by the sushi here. The sushi pieces were definitely not fresh and room temperature. Everything looked dry and unappetizing. Some pieces i felt like i was chewing the rubber part of a pacifier. But at least that makes you feel nostalgic about your childhood...haha

Yelp
Been here twice now. I love this part of town because it's so chic. Gari stands out a bit because it's somewhere between an intimate and casual vibe. I've had both the sushi and sashimi Omasake which were high quality and delicious. You could tell even with the mom and pop vibes, there is some definite sprezzatura going down. Everything down from how the menu feels like it's been hand written and the decor all thought through. And it shines through in the quality of the food. In my small opinion I think you start with the quality of fish, then the skill of the master and then how does it fit into the overall dining experience. It all blends in nicely here. I will definitely come back again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
I give you four stars for your food. I give you three stars for the overall eating experience. I guess my expectations were a bit higher for sushi of gari considering you had three other locations in NYC. You're humble and modest in your decor. You also pack in your Tribeca location as though we were sardines. The place was hot and cold - please fix your thermostat. Onto the food, we got the sushi deluxe dinner set and the tuna of gari. Loved both and got a side order of uni too. I loved it! Don't know that I will be back to this location but I certainly wouldn't mind ordering take out from this location.

Yelp
Great, great place to go for quality sushi. I made a reservation off Open Table and when we arrived, they sat us immediately. The service was excellent, attending to all of our needs and answering any questions we may have had. It is a quiet and somewhat cozy restaurant where you truly have the right environment to talk with your friends, family, a date, whomever you are dining with. The sushi was extremely fresh and tasty, and the menu offered a variety of options to fit your preferred style.

Yelp
This place always hits the spot when I'm inba mood for sushi next to home. Always fresh, well executed. My favorite is their Sushi Regular set, especially that last torched piece. Also like red miso soup. Service is always nice, and the place itself is very pleasant
