Sushi on Jones Review - NOHO - New York - The Infatuation

"Most restaurants follow a set of culturally accepted norms. They let you stay as long as you like. They accept reservations either by phone, an app like OpenTable, or maybe don't take reservations at all. They have more than four seats. Most of them let you sit indoors. So when we say Sushi On Jones breaks conventions, we don't mean it in the sense of, "This restaurant only serves small plates!" This "restaurant," an outdoor, four-seat, omakase-only sushi bar where you're limited to 30-minutes and have to make a reservation by text message, pretty much just says f*ck you to all the things that normally make a restaurant a restaurant. The best way to get one of the four seats is to text them - the number's 917-270-1815, because we like making things easy for you. You'll show up for your allotted time slot, and from there you'll be served 12 pieces of sushi over the course of 30 minutes. The $50 (before tax and tip) menu includes scallop, crab, uni, hamachi, uni, eel, sweet shrimp, two styles of tuna, two styles of salmon, and seared wagyu beef. To finish, you get a piece of seared wagyu beef topped with a piece of uni. Looks like two different-colored tongues, tastes delicious. The pieces have light sauces and some of them are seared slightly, but overall the sushi is relatively straightforward and simple, and very good. Sushi On Jones' owner used to be the chef at Sushi Dojo, so if you've been there, you'll be familiar with the style. Overall, there are some pros and cons that come along with being an outdoor, time-limited sushi bar. Having only 30 minutes to eat is short, but it also means you know exactly when you'll be seated and they can fit in a lot of people each night, even with four seats. And eating outside is always fun, as long as global warming isn't flexing its "HEY I'M REAL" muscles too hard. (There's an awning, but maybe don't come during a thunderstorm, blizzard, or the hottest day of summer). If you can manage to get a seat, and have about $60 and a half hour to spare, this a fun, unusual, not ridiculously expensive omakase experience. It feels good to break the rules sometimes. 19 Impressive Whiskey Bars in NYC

"The recently opened Uchu is split between a 10-seat omakase sushi tasting area and the even smaller eight-seat kaiseki counter, with luxurious dishes like caviar wrapped with rice in toasted nori. The latter space doubles as a whiskey bar with over 80 Japanese bottles, and a new $90 cocktail tasting menu on Sundays and Mondays features some of them." - Paul Schrodt

most authentic/no frills under $100 omakase spot in the city. Sushi by M or sushi by bou are both very frilly imo and don't put as much emphasis on fish quality as much as sushi on jones does

"For dinner, we ordered Sushi on Jones. We’ve been ordering high quantities of food, truly. We went a little overboard a couple times, ordering a lot of Asian food. This night, we got avocado and cucumber maki, chicken katsu sando, edamame, a restaurant-week special of king salmon maki and tuna maki, toro nigiri, and tuna crispy rice."

One of my favorite (affordable) omakase spots in NYC! There’s several locations! The lineup is solid and the rice is always on spot. The fish always fresh. And the chef always super kind and attentive. My night with my wife was especially special because we were the only ones there. Chef took extra special care to us and we enjoyed every single bite. This place was founded on a quick(30 min slot) + affordable omakase which is what I loved. I’m a fast eater and love value so always come back to this spot. We weren’t rushed this time due to the lack of people there but we thoroughly enjoyed the omakase. Pictured: a special piece by the chef with freshly caught lobster, caviar, gold leaf on Japanese milk bread.

Sushi on Jones holds a special memory for me, starting from my first visit to the al fresco Omakase bar in Bowery market to my recent return during the pandemic to the West Village location. On a weeknight, my friends and I were fortunate to secure six sushi counter seats at the LES location. The service we received was friendly and prompt. They offered two omakase menus, one with 12 pieces for $68 and another with 20 pieces for $120. We could switch to the 20-piece menu towards the end of the 12 pieces if we were still hungry. Chef Jin sliced each fish with care to showcase its flavor, and each sushi piece was delicious. We spent over two hours at the restaurant, chatting with the chef, and watching how each piece was made. The LES’s ambiance was very zen, with a large sushi counter and tables around the room. Highly recommended for any sushi lovers!

Everything from the atmosphere to the food is exceptional here. I had the omakase, which for $68 and 12 courses isn’t that expensive. The fish was incredibly fresh and the warm rice always paired well with the temperature of the fish. All the flavors came together beautifully in each dish. My personal favorite was the tuna with truffle salt, the fish melted in your mouth and the sear from the blowtorch added a good texture. I also had the Matcha sponge cake, which was actually a bit dry, but the cream cheese frosting was amazing and the small notes of almond added a complexity to the whole dessert. The staff were incredibly friendly and the whole experience was just amazing. Special praise to the ginger because it was some of the best I’ve ever had.

This place was killer…. The crispy rice is off the hook! Was talked into it by Bill (sushi ninja) and it was amazing. I would eat it daily! The staff is top notch! Why wasn’t there a line around the block? You are crazy not to be blowing this place up… we were crazy lucky to just walk in without knowing anything about this place. This sushi spot is a gem! Bill loves this food and is a wonderful guide through this taste experience!

Great experience, we went on Memorial Day so it was very quiet night. We had a lovely time with our sushi chef. Did the 12pc omakase and ordered a waguy tartare, o toro maki and waguy&uni nigiri from a la carte. Sushi was delicious and very fresh, they get deliveries daily. We had such a nice relaxed evening - can’t wait to be back!

Our family went to Sushi on Jones for the first time that night. it was an impressive and amazing night! We enjoy the sushi there and the chef was gorgeous and had a great talent and creative on sashimi. I enjoyed my dinner too much to forget to take more pics!!! This is absolutely a restaurant which has the most fresh and delicious sashimi.

Please do yourself a favor and do not waste your money here. Red flag when server tells you omakase is going to be 45min. Facts: After many omakase restaurants literally the smallest pieces of sushi we’ve ever had. Half sized portions of everything with just barely a hint of rice. Subjective facts: Also highly imbalanced in flavors, overly salty at moments and simplistic in others. Tasted below even the semi-affordable price. Saving grace: Photos look nice, and restaurant design is clean and attractive. But looks don’t match the actual product. Barely two stars.

Omakase for $58 includes 13 courses, one of the best values downtown. Highlights include the king salmon, barracuda, and Amberjack. The a la carte menu is equally strong, with a laid back and minimalist vibe. Definitely recommend
