Where to Eat in Tucson, Arizona's Desert Jewel | Bon Appétit

"An unpretentious sushi spot with a relaxed soundtrack of lo-fi hip-hop and jazzed-up Ghibli covers, a selection of Japanese craft beers, and skilled chefs (including a friendly Navajo sushi chef) who experiment with house-made condiments like yuzu kosho and smoked salmon; the result is superb, old-school-meets-modern sushi served in a chill environment without gimmicks." - ByJackie Tran

This place was a great sushi spot! We were squeezed in right before a wait list started and they were seriously on top of drink refills. Rare thing. Sushi was so yummy. We tried the wagyu beef as well and it was out of this world good. The rolls we had were happy crab (my favorite), dynamite, and spicy tuna. All wonderful. We will come back and bring our friends next time!

Love love love. My husband and I fell in love over sushi so we try just about every place all over Tucson.. this was hands down our favorite yet!! The sushi was fresh, different from what other places offer as far as their specialty rolls go, and intimate. You can dress up and make it classy or down dress down and make it casual You’ll get good sushi, no matter what. I though out waitress was a wee bit too casual and left our dirty dishes about too long while we were dining and could have picked those up sooner— but otherwise. We will absolutely be back !!

First time here. We went on the recommendation of my friend. She said it was, in her opinion, the best in town (personally, I still like O Sushi on Swan and Speedway better, but that's me). Everything here tasted fresh, service was good, no issues. Kind of a hole in the wall joint, decent easterly views out the front door and windows.

Perfect meal, extremely fresh fish, appropriately priced, fast and kind staff, relaxing ambiance, I’m obsessed!!!

We got absolutely wasted on sake and had a Time Of Our Lives eating some very delicious sushi

This was my first time here, and I would definitely come back. The people working were friendly, atte tive, spoke Japanese ( dont usually see that in Tucson) and the food was really good. I would definitely recommend them to anyone that wants sushi.

We are regular customers of Sushi on Oracle. The staff is very friendly, and their food is delicious and high-quality. On Valentine’s Day Friday night, they were extremely busy, with a full house as usual and a significantly higher number of takeout orders than usual. The chefs and service staff were very professional and efficient. We were amazed at how many customers they served in such a short time. Although we waited a bit longer, it was a special weekend, and our food was still absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the dining atmosphere and truly appreciate their hard work and dedication.

This little restaurant sure has a HUGE fan base! Thankfully we arrived just before the rush. We were able to sit at the sushi bar which is always fun to watch the chefs! The fish is fresh and delicious! We enjoyed the miso soup and edamame as well! Our service was top notch! Our favorite was the rainbow roll, so many flavors of fish and the sauce was delicious! We will definitely return and would even wait if it’s it’s busy! Definitely top notch sushi in Tucson!

Yelp
This place has been one of my regular spots in town for years. Great location, chill vibe, nothing fancy or pretentious--just good food and usually really attentive service. It's always been one of those reliable places you can count on. I'm all about the Agadashi Tofu, while my husband and daughter like to mix it up with sushi rolls or noodle dishes. We've got our favorites, but it's also fun to try new things here. We hadn't been in for a few months, and when we went back tonight, I noticed right away that the staff was all new. That was a little surprising--we'd been seeing the same familiar faces for years. A few dishes looked a bit different, too, but we were told the recipes are the same, just presented differently. Turns out, the place has a new owner. I won't lie--I missed the familiar crew. But the service was still quick, friendly, and on point. And thankfully, the food was just as good as we remembered. I really hope it stays that way, because this place has always felt like a solid favorite.

Yelp
It's a cozy spot located at a strip mall. We were greeted warmly and seated right away. The service was fast and the sushi was really good. The only thing that could improve would be to time when the food comes to the table. The sushi came out before the appetizer and the teriyaki came out much later than the rest.

Yelp
It's been a minute since I've been here, sushi being expensive and me usually eating a lot I've been doing the all you can eat places. I was very happy to be back and this platter was just enough for me. The service is good and the sushi is terrific!! It's small clean and easy to get to. It was super crowded on a Wednesday and I looked at everyone's food as always, I look and ask questions all the time and my friends are better about being annoyed with me. Usually I've met really nice people doing that. Needless to say the food atmosphere and service make the place!!

Yelp
So the craving this evening was sushi! I acquiesced and let my host decide where we were going to go ! We had a lobster roll , and awesome roll , and a tempura roll. As far as sashimi we had tuna , salmon, scallops , and yellowtail! The sushi was delicious , the service was a little to be desired. Next time I'm hitting the sushi bar ..

Yelp
Very good service, small but nice & neat place, easy parking. Delicious agedashi Tofu and sushi rolls. The rice in nigiri is kinda too much so the fish portion on it is small.
google avatar

Ed G.

Yelp
Chirashi bowl was a beautiful presentation of chef's choice sashimi over rice. Very fresh. Friendly service.

Yelp
Best sushi in Tucson it's up there with NYC quality sushi. It is so good and never had a bad dish yet. Very simple settings and small so do plan ahead because they do get lines no reservations. And why wouldn't they, their Sushi is that good!!! Definitely worth the wait.
google avatar

Yelp
The service was great! The sashimi was great according to my brother, but the rolls (tempura and soft shell crab) were rolled a bit loose. Definitely was busy and had good music

Yelp
Unparalleled combination of deliciously prepared fresh fish with a diverse set of available options! On top of that, the value is there- great portion sizes! Fast and friendly service in a casual environment, No reservations at this popular spot...so make sure to arrive just before opening or be prepared to wait! Today, I had nigiri : kampachi, salmon, uni and toro. All were DELICIOUS! Perfect sized lunch for me!

Yelp
Lunch Break Bliss!" We stopped in for a quick lunch at Sushi On Oracle and left completely satisfied. The waitresses totally got the assignment -- they understood we were two busy women on a tight lunch break and made sure everything came out fast and fresh. The rolls? So tasty! And the lunch special price? Even better. Already planning our next visit!

Yelp
Second visit. After a disappointing first visit where the chef was out we came back for a second visit. We are glad we came! Great quality sushi in a surprising spot. We started with edamame and salad which was fine. We ordered a series of negiri and some rolls - eel avocado roll. Good balanced roll - rainbow roll. Generous top and usual fare inside. - tuna. Dark firm and tasty - yellowtail. Nice Japanese cut. Fresh - unagi. Well basted and not excessively fatty - ebi. Nice large firm shrimp - salmon. My favorite. Some belly cuts and other but all firm and delicious. - sweet shrimp. Good but batter left them a bit oily. Good service and great sushi chefs. Well done. I recommend this place!

Yelp
Went to Sushi on Oracle for lunch and as others have noted, this place is small and usually full so it's best to arrive early to avoid waiting for a table. The space is cute and clean, the staff are nice and welcoming, and depending on where you sit, there is a nice mountain view. My husband and I had miso soups and the phoenix and ocean roll and thought the food was good. I prefer having sushi rolls that are cooked, and liked that you can easily identify cooked rolls on their sushi ordering sheet.

Yelp
Best sushi in Tucson! you don't need to go anywhere else. From the service, to the flavors and variety of creative items to choose from, and of course the taste! Have not been to Japan but it is hard to imagine it's that much better than this place! Super good get the pink lady & the spicy girl rolls! update: I feel so alive after leaving. It is food that makes you FEEL good too.
google avatar

Yelp
Best sushi and shashimi in Tucson. Hands down. Fresh fish in generous portions. I won't go anywhere else.

Sarah S.

Yelp
The fish was actually very fresh! The most important thing to consider when looking for a sushi bar.

Kayla D.

Yelp
Good service! Feels authentic in there. The food was yummy. Ambience was nice. It's a little small in there but that isn't a bad thing!

Yelp
East coasters in town for a conference looking for some sushi in the desert. Food was good. Staff was lovely.

Yelp
Best sushi in town. very good spicy girl roll and spicy Alaska roll. Best roll always.

Tom V.

Yelp
All the things that I previously said have been rectified. Service is better and the food has improved. Think it must have undergone a change in ownership.

Victoria O.

Yelp
Little sushi restaurant. Spicy Alaskan, pink roll, rainbow and salmon Soooooo good and so fresh, 0 complainants (:

R S.

Yelp
Excellent sushi, well presented, and excellent service. The chirashi plate had a nice spread of sashimi and sides. The rolls my wife had were very good. And our guest enjoyed his sushi as well. We will go back.

Yelp
Sushi on Oracle is cute, delicious, and definitely worth the visit. The food is outstanding. I have trouble finding Katsu donburi in Tucson, you can find lots of Katsu Don (fried cutlet with rice) but it is much hard to find katsu donburi (fried cutlet with rice AND EGG.) The egg makes all the difference to the dish. It soaks up the sauce, that is perfect with the meat and vegetables. It doesn't over power anything, only compliments. To finish it off, the entire staff in the restaurant is super friendly. They greet you when you come in, and helpful and friendly in ordering, and they cheerfully send you off. I could not have felt more welcome there. They only sell katsu donburi at lunch.

Yelp
I'm from Los Angeles and have eaten at some of the best sushi restaurants in town. Sushi on Oracle topped almost all of them. Superior quality and freshness. Outstanding presentation. It is a very small place so expect a crowd and wait time. When I'm back in Tucson, my "go to" sushi spot 100%.
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying this place, tiny yet neat. Got here before they get busy. I like everything we ordered. Next time I will try their noodles. Will definitely come back. And recommend this place.

Yelp
Portions small, place is small and never had anything I felt I wanted to come back for. I'm so sad because I really like the older owners but can't do it

Sarah A.

Yelp
I love Sushi on Oracle, it has been one of my go to spots for quite awhile. They seem to keep things pretty authentic and the quality is ALWAYS just amazing. They put extra little touches on the things like Nigiri and Rolls that make you appreciate the extra thought put into your experience. They even make little cucumber flower cups for things like Uni if I order it Sashimi style (no rice). Plus, they are one of the only sushi places near me that regularly carry Uni (Sea Urchin) and Otoro (Fatty Tuna). Sometimes when they are busy takeout can take awhile, upwards of an hour so plan ahead. I've only had one bad experience where I waited 2 hours for my order and they kept seating people who were getting their food as I waited, even though I had called my order in over an hour prior. I was told they were short a sushi chef so I understood. The restaurant is small and the waiters often will look after all the tables and are very busy so just be patient and enjoy your time! The staff is all really nice and the sushi chefs always greet me. They have specials on a little board when you walk in showing they sometimes carry different items they feature. Any roll can be ordered as a hand roll if you want. Their Tempura is delicious and they have Lunch specials with rolls and tempura together are well as other things like nigiri assortment for an affordable price. Between Sushi on Oracle and their neighbor, The Parish, they are two extremely solid and popular spots whose word of mouth spreads outside Arizona frequently.

Eve G.

Yelp
This may be my favorite sushi spot in Tucson. The fish was so fresh and very well priced in my opinion. Everything was so delicious. It was a bit small and busy, but we didn't wait more than ten minutes.

Yelp
Came here with a group after golfing because we all seemed to have a sushi craving and my brother said it's the best spot! He was totally right. I am addicted to seaweed salad, so obviously I had to get it here. Loved every bite. Great texture and great taste. The lemon was a nice touch! My family loves nigiri, so they got all kinds of nigiri. I wasn't in the mood so I ordered some rolls! Everything was fresh and came out so quick. I had never tried taro (it could be Toro I forgot how to spell it), but it literally melts in your mouth. If fish could be butter, that's what this is. Absolutely amazing!

Yelp
This review is for takeout. It was busy on a Saturday night, and everyone seemed to be enjoying the food. I was a in a rush to get home and decided to opt for to-go instead. They have a lot of specials written on the walls, and they have a smaller menu of hand cut rolls compared to other sushi places I've been to. Even though I was ordering to-go, all the employees were super nice. I was offered water while waiting. I watched the sushi chef explain the dishes to the customers beside me, and I think it would be fun to sit in and have a dining experience here. I waited about 25 minutes and got my two rolls, one with spicy octopus and the other with eel. Both rolls were tasty, but I felt like there was too much rice and a bit clunky. The wasabi wasn't spicy at all, which surprised me. I would be back to dine in and order sashimi and tempura to have the full experience, but I likely would not order the same rolls again.

McKerrow S.

Yelp
Amazing customer service at this place. Logan made sushi and was amazing! Really great staff, super friendly and food was made delicious!!

Yelp
Sushi on oracle continues to be our family's favorite sushi spot in town. It's not big or fancy but they do their food right. Love the variety of fish and seafood they have. I ordered the teriyaki beef with four pieces of nigiri sushi and my wife got the nine piece nigiri sushi combo. We also got miso soup and edamame for $1 and a small sale for $5. They did have some good beer options as well. The service was friendly and helpful. The food was tasty and fresh. Sushi on Oracle continues to reign supreme for high quality sushi at a good price. And as long as you know the name you of the restaurant, it's easy to find.
google avatar

Yelp
Was the only customer in the place at the time. And yet when I got to where I was going to eat it the order was wrong. When I called to get a refund I was promised it would be done. Nope.
google avatar

Frances C.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was in highschool. It's always been my favorite. Went on a date with my fiance the other night and sad to say with the new owners, I would need to find another sushi spot. No one offered us drinks, no one asked if we wanted miso or edamame, but did so for other tables. We had to flag someone down to put in our order while tables seated after us got food before anyone noticed us. The food was alright but not seeing any familiar faces at all after I understand that they got rid of pretty much the whole old staff. I'm glad that yoshi and mrs can finally take a breather but this was rough
google avatar

Yelp
Sushi here is straightforward with basic choices. No fancy rolls. They do have uni on the menu. The fish is fresh and decent quality. Miso soup was very bland. There were two servers on duty on a Friday. One was very direct and not friendly, seemed overwhelmed by a full house at 5:05 pm. The other was personable and nice. I stood in line before they opened at five so I could place a takeout order. I was told it would be 45 minutes by server #1 because it was a full house. However none of the tables had ordered and I was already placing my order. Didn't make sense. Server#2 took my order after I removed a kitchen item and said it would be 25 minutes and it was. When I got the order home I found that it was not right. We got a rainbow roll instead of the appetizer we ordered and they added a nigiri that we didn't order (and didn't want). I am not sure if I paid for the wrong items or not since there are no prices on the website or on the sushi list I was asked to check boxes on. All in all a negative experience. I don't recommend unless you don't mind waiting for a seat, are OK with a 50/50 chance of annoyed staff, and you plan to eat in the restaurant so you can monitor your order contents.

Jill J.

Yelp
Haven't been here for awhile and I forgot how good it was. It was a very busy night but service was excellent and food was delicious!

Jack F.

Yelp
Best Sushi & Sashimi in Tucson. Nice Sushi counter and tables are spaced so it seems bigger than it is.
google avatar

Jeremy A.

Yelp
This place was very unassuming and there was a wait but it's worth it. We got assorted sashimi and the spicy scallop roll and everything was incredible. Parking is in a strip mall and there's plenty of spots. Can't wait to go back!

Ken A.

Yelp
Went there on what was admittedly a fairly crowded night. After receiving our miso soups, shrimp tempura appetizer and sake, we waited for an hour and fifteen minutes for all our sushi orders, which never arrived. Paid for what we ate/drank and left.

William M.

Yelp
I have been going here for years. Prior to today, my last visit, about 4 months ago, was right after the ownership change. I was sad to see Yoshi sell the restaurant, but I knew he needed to retire. My previous experience was great; fresh fish and good service. Now that the ownership change is complete, today's visit was not the same. While the service was good, the nigiri quality was not. Smaller fish portions and TOO MUCH RICE. It was literally golfball sized Gohan and the fish was not as plentiful. So sad, considering this was the best goto sushi locally I had experienced outside of Tucson. Not anymore...

Yelp
We stopped in for dinner a couple weeks ago. I checked out some reviews and decided on Sushi on Oracle. We arrived and put our name on the list for a table. Our wait was about 20 minutes. The resultant is small but obviously does good business and a large takeout business right now. The restaurant is nicely decorated with modern decor. We started with miso soup and edamame before our entrees. Both were good and a nice start to our meal. Hubs ordered two sushi rolls and I had the yaki udon with steak. He enjoyed his sushi and felt it was tasty and fresh. I loved my udon. The noodles had a nice bite to them, the sauce was super flavorful, the steak was tender and I loved the nice chunks of veggies - onion, cabbage, and carrots. Portions we're good size and we had enough leftovers for lunch the next day. We absolutely enjoyed our dinner and plan to return!

Yelp
3.5 stars The service was okay, but could have been better. The sashimi was good but inconsistent (the first order or Toro was fantastic, and so we ordered a second set.....but the second set was just meh). The dearth of choices in rolls was a bit disappointing to me. There was nothing bad about this place, but it didn't really live up to the 4.5 star average Yelp review that it is currently getting. Maybe our expectations were just a bit too high, but I think this place rates a 3.5 in my book. I could see others rating it a 4...but no idea how so many Yelpers are giving this place a 5.
google avatar

Arka C.

Yelp
The nigiri is pretty good - the rolls leave a little to be desired; wait times can be long.

Yelp
Finally, after moving back to Tucson for a year, I have found a sushi bar on the NW side of town that is a keeper, Sushi on Oracle! Fish is fresh and the selection is good. Tonight I had mostly specials written on the board...aji, toro, fatty salmon, black mackerel, amber jack sashimi, and some unagi and hamachi nigiri. All was melt in your mouth good! They also have salmon & hamachi collar on the menu. They were out of the hamachi collar (one of my faves!) so I tried the broiled miso glazed black cod and it was delicious! I like sitting at the counter and chatting with the chefs (old school!)...learning about what's fresh and getting the scoop about the local Asian food scene. This has not been the vibe at other places I've tried so far. They usually take your order and bring the entire order to you all at once and no chat time with the chefs (they are just there to make sushi). I'd you like good quality fish made the traditional style (nigiri and sashimi), letting the flavors of the fish speak for itself (like I do), this is the place for you. If you like big fancy rolls,l and dynamite La, this place may not be as appealing for you. I got there at 4:50pm on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. There was a line formed outside. Get there early. The place is small. Service is efficient. No free salad or miso soup like some places. I don't mind. This will be my "go to" to get my sushi fix on the NW side of town.
google avatar

Aryaman N.

Yelp
This is a largely positive review, though there were definitely some issues. I wish Yelp would let us do half stars cause this is the quintessential 3.5 star place. First, great nigiri on the whole. Fresh fish, nice rice, and they put wasabi underneath. Nice! I do wish the Tuna quality were better compared to some other places but it's far from bad. The Spicy Tuna hand roll while tasting good didn't have the right texture for the fish as some pieces were chopped too big which was fairly noticeable. Finally the service while well intended definitely needs work. I had to ask for my hand roll again and they gave me two receipts which charged for the miso soup while the other didn't but they ran my credit card on the latter. Thankfully they told me not to worry about it but it's still frustrating when things like that happen. Overall, mostly great food, service left to be desired.

Gianna C.

Yelp
My mom and I came here for dinner on a Sunday night and the parking lot was packed! We didn't have a wait and were serviced promptly, which was good since I was quite hungry. The rolls were spectacular and the cuts of the sashimi were above my expectations. I was really impressed with the taste and presentation of our sushi. I love it here and will be back!
google avatar

Bre S.

Yelp
When on the hunt for a local sushi spot, this was the first recommendation out of 9/10 people's mouth, and it's easy to see why! When you walk in, it's a small, clean, no-frills type of place- exactly what we were looking for. The staff is friendly and lightning fast. We were seated immediately, and sake/sapporos brought out lickety -split. For rolls, we started with the toro (tuna belly), which was melt-in-your-mouth good. The spicy salmon roll was a highlight, and the rainbow roll was also very good. We were slightly disappointed in the shrimp tempura roll- it had good crunch, but was a little bland. As always, the California roll was a tried and true was to end. We'll be back to try the whole menu!
google avatar

Genevieve S.

Yelp
Excellent sushi, toro a particular treat, wide choice of fish, great service. Coming early or late toward end of service reduces wait... Will be back!
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
First, we had signed in to the waiting list, then lost our table to clueless guests that walked right in and got seated. This was a bit frustrating but the restaurant did try to make it better by offering us water while we waited. The food was average, which was a bit disappointing, given the reviews. The spicy mayo on the Baked California Rolls wasn't spicy. The Spicy Tuna Rolls did some to redeem the restaurant but not enough to live up to expectations. On the whole, we found the food to be unexciting and quite average.
