The 24 Best Places For Cheap Sushi In LA

"Sushi Spot is a classic Valley strip mall restaurant with a fluorescent fish-shaped sign glowing in the parking lot. Apart from the whiteboard instructions telling you not to use your phone, the space is bare bones with a standard sushi bar and a few tables scattered around. The sushi, however, happens to be great and pretty inexpensive.  Nigiri and classic rolls are all under $10 and there’s a chef’s omakase option if you’re hungry for $60 that includes 13 pieces of nigiri, plus a blue crab handroll. " - jess basser sanders, brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder

Wow! Blown away by this 'spot'! I can confidently say this will be our go-to sushi restaurant in the valley. The sushi is incredibly fresh and everything is so reasonably priced. The service is top notch - they were so friendly, attentive, and had amazing recommendations. The fish melts in your mouth and I can sincerely say I did not want this meal to end. The chef set menu is an amazing deal and we can't wait to come back to try the omakase. So sad our meal at Sushi Spot is over and excited to be back ASAP!

Google
I asked for water and there was white stuff on the top just nasty I was afraid one I got the Togo food so I opened up the food to see how that looks like and the guy says sorry you can’t eat your Togo food just ordered here. I was in a rush anyway I told him I just opened it up to check to see how the food looked like if that was nasty too I didn’t want to take trash with me I would have had him thrown it out. Only nice thing was I was in a rush and they got made my order fast

Google
Sushi? This is the spot! If you're in the hunt for great sushi, give them a try. Fast service and the staff is welcoming and very nice. Their Omakase is great!

Google
Each Sushi is fresh. The best taste tonight is Sake at $8.00

Google
I've been coming here for close to 20 years now & it is hands-down my favorite sushi place in the country! Taku & Mika are amazing chefs & always provide a top-notch experience. The fish is super fresh & their flavor & texture combinations are wonderful. Highly recommend!!

Google
The food was fantastic and I went before dinner rush so it wasn’t too busy. The staff were still looking for ways to serve and clear our table of any dishes instead of standing around which some people do at other restaurants when it’s slow. The tables were pretty close together so if you don’t like having your conversations overheard this might be a tight space, but I would definitely go back for the food and the service.

Google
This is mine and my husband's favorite date night spot! The food never disappoints and staff are attentive and friendly. We always get the 3 way tuna, it's delicious!

Google
Our favorite spot on Ventura Blvd. Unique cut roles, fresh daily supplied fish and friendly customer service. We absolutely in love at this hidden gem SPOT!

Yelp
We had a wonderful date night at Sushi Spot. It was our first time back in a long time. Still the same freshness in their seafood and presentation. Friendly people and atmosphere with excellent service. We enjoyed a variety of items. Honestly, everything is delicious here. Explore the menu!

Yelp
Not only it is not good, it is overpriced tasteless sushi in the valley. I surprised they are still in business, after spending $150 sushi was shit. Think twice before you go

Yelp
I haven't been here in 10-15 years and the sushi is still awesome! Definitely recommend hitting up the sushi spot if you are looking for a great meal in Tarzana. We walked in at 7pm without a reservation on Saturday and they offered us a table for 45 mins before their next reservation. So glad we got to crush that sushi craving. We got a few orders of the rice cakes, salmon sushi, scallop sushi, hand rolls and a cut roll. ~$80 after tax and tip. They also offer an omakase experience at the sushi bar for $60
google avatar

Yelp
I can't believe it took us so long to try Sushi Spot. Very fresh fish and surprisingly reasonable prices. The albacore sushi was some of the best we've ever had (and melted in our mouths), and the blue crab roll was also excellent. The staff was also super attentive and really personable. We will definitely be coming back often.

Yelp
Hands done worst sushi Ive ever had , not just saying that to be an A*****e , but genuinely the wost sushi ive ever had. dont come here

Yelp
Great hidden gem in the valley. The sushi is fresh and high quality. Came here with my wife for a casual dinner and will definitely be back.

Yelp
Sushi Spot is our go-to for a great Omakase. We introduced our friend from DC to Sushi Spot a few years ago. Whenever he comes into town, he wants to go to Sushi Spot. The Omakase meal always starts off with the 4 way tuna, which melts in your mouth and makes your eyes roll back into your head, while exhaling an "mmmmm". From there, you get a little taste of freshness from the sea, with the last course being marinated ikura sushi and Uni sushi, which is a great way to end the meal. The cost is reasonable for the selection and freshness of fish. Sushi spot is not a fancy sushi restaurant, but if you are looking for a great no hassle, generally no wait, sushi restaurant, Sushi Spot is the perfect place. They also have a less expensive set meal which is also a great option should you want some cooked items.

Yelp
I have been here a couple times, and they always have good quality and lots of choices.... And always always fresh..... located in the shopping center. This place has been around for 34 years so very consistent and professional service and very attentive and the quality ingredients with the fresh fish is always on point.... I sat at the sushi bar and I left it to the chef with a Omakase and everything was delicious because Sushi is all about quality..... price was very reasonable and it was well worth it so keep up the good work and I will be back and Arigato

Yelp
Decided to do an updated review just to cosign everything I said in my initial statement and add some pictures. This place is still my all time favorite. This last weekend, Yellowtail Belly was one of the specials and lord have mercy-- it was SO goodddd. I swear the Salmon nigiri we got tasted like Salmon Belly. 10's across the board. I will say, I tried the "fried soft shell crab" with ponzu for first time. You can SKIP this dish. Nothing to rave about-- maybe if the ponzu was on the side instead of on the actual crab-- it'd be better, but it was super salty since it was on top of it. I'd say spend that $13 on more sushi or another side lol.

Yelp
I was hankering for some stuffed squid Sushi spot has been you go to for such a dish. This time out it was lackluster. The place was really slow/ empty. It was mid week though. The service was spot on as I ordered to-go. The squid was ok. Not as fresh as usual. It was still very good and my desire for a bite of squid was satisfied I'll probably give them another chance in the future.

Yelp
3.5 stars. I called last minute for a table and the receptionist made available a table for us. That was very accommodating and nice. Very nice service and getting. We ordered omakase. The fish was pretty fresh. There were as many cooked food was raw ones. The order of dishes didn't make sense though. One would want more subtle dishes ahead of more strong flavored ones but that's not the case. It was back and forth between raw and cooked food. I didn't appreciate that. I was also questioning the regular tuna that really does nothing.

Yelp
From the outside looking in it looks like a real hole in the wall, and if you're a sushi pro you know those are the BEST! It's confirmed. They have a 4 way toro that's is a MUST. The blue crab hand roll (lite rice), soft crab shell and green tea ICED. Make sure you make a reservation cause they fill up even right when they open

Louis E.

Yelp
Sushi is great just need to add a bit more variety to the sushi roll menu. Service is great and you can tell the locals like hanging out here.

Yelp
Sushi Spot is located in a strip mall near Taft High School on Ventura Blvd. You can order by phone for pick up. It's worth it. Ordered the following and it made me realize just how much I miss sushi. Anacado Roll Special Roll Tuna Roll Spider Roll One of them is "keto" if you're on a special diet. Two of these rolls have sauces that go with them. The lady thoughtfully labelled the sauces and wrote on the tray which sauce should go on which roll. The rolls were great without them - I couldn't wait til we got home to get started so I started without sauce. But once you put the sauce on, it's just extra!

Yelp
My M.O. (modus operandi) in writing a restaurant review, is to eat at this given restaurant; take some verbal, but, mostly mental notes on my overall experience at this "given" restaurant, and then share my experience to whom ever might (slightly) want to hear what a rube like me has to say. And, that's, really that! But, occasionally a restaurant is so damn good, I'll do this act twice. That was the case with Dan Tanas in West Hollywood, The Ivy on Robertson and tonight, at Sushi Spot in Tarzana, CA. In January of this year, we moved from L.A. to Chicago. Our favorite cuisine has always been Japanese food, in particular, sushi. Eating this type of food in Los Angeles is as easy as walking. In Chicago its as hard as splitting a hydrogen atom. There is just not this food group anywhere to be found in Chicago, that is good; and if you do find it, it will costs you as much as your gold Rolex. That's why, when ever we return to L.A., we head straight to Sushi Spot in Tarzana. It's been our "Home" for sushi for over 25 years. Sushi Spot is so consistently excellent that here I am again, mind you, some 7 years later, spouting off (again) just how confoundly wonderful their food is. I dare you to find an Omakase dinner better than Sushi Spot and at a price that won't make you miss your next car payment. The service here is stellar. The ambiance is "strip mall" divy, which I love. It makes me feel like I'm on a dead end back street in Tokyo's Ginza District. Enough of my - second review - of this sushi haven. I can easily say, that my wife and I, when visiting L.A., will ALWAYS make Sushi Spot in Tarzana our first supper!

Yelp
If you need your sushi fix during this quarantine, make sure to give Sushi Spot a call! They are doing take out Tuesday-Saturday 4:00-8:30 and with Chef Taku-san, the fish is as fresh and delicious as ever! You can also order some sake or beer with your order, as well! Chef Mika-san will frequently be the one answering the phone and taking orders, as she knows all the fish they have (still waiting for them to get some ankimo; hook ya girl up, lol!). They just started a super cute promotion with a $30 Sashimi Box that contains 4 pc tuna (thick and tasty), 2pc albacore, 2pc salmon, 2 pc yellowtail, 2pc halibut, 2 pc bonita, sunomono salad and all the appropriate accoutrements for the fish. It was really good and we'll probably order it again, since we prefer sashimi. Please help out this local business; they've been here for over 30 years and I really want them to be here when we're all allowed to go out again =)

Nikki P.

Yelp
My FAVORITE sushi spot in the valley!! The albacore sushi is always so fresh and just melts in your mouth. Do yourself a favor and get the spicy crunchy albacore roll, it's literally what dreams are made of. Thank you for always feeding us delicious goodness, will be a loyal patron until the end of time!

Yelp
Definitely recommend this establishment. We did the omakase which was excellent! All the items were extremely fresh. I would definitely rate this "spot" at the top of my valley sushi list.

Yelp
Came here last week after reading all the positive reviews and am always interested in finding the next best sushi spot. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed with this location as much as I wanted to love it. Granted it was a Friday night and likely a night that gets busy however when I attended during prime time, it was only around 30% filled yet there were plenty of staff which is a great thing. The issue is that two of the servers were not very responsive. We found the need to remind our server twice for most items as he was forgetting, absent-minded, or just preoccupied. Whatever the reason, it was slightly annoying to keep track of what we had ordered vs. what was delivered if at all. As far as the sushi, the quality and taste were both fair at best. The prices did not represent the quality of the fish (IOW, it's overpriced for what you're getting). I selected from the menu and went with a few items confirmed as the more popular dishes. This included a crispy rice with spicy tuna - it was fair at best. The peppers stuffed with albacore were kind of disgusting - tasted like chicken tenders. The sushi pieces themselves tasted very fishy and that included items off the specials menu which were all premium priced. I was really not impressed overall. The menu is not very robust. In Woodland Hills/Tarzana alone there are far better tasting/quality sushi joints. This is located in a really dingy valley strip mall with 7-11 as its anchor tenant. Parking is tricky and tight. I really wanted to love this place but I'm afraid that competition is too great in metro LA and granted they've been around for over 34 years, it's not an excuse.

Yelp
We go here all the time and it is consistently amazing. Great service as well. Been around forever and one of our favorites .

Yelp
After a week long camping trip in the great outdoors, I was beyond excited to have sushi as my 1st meal back!! We were on the way to LA, but decided to try Sushi Spot in Ventura because of its raving reviews. I must say... This restaurant definitely lives up to its hype! Sushi Spot is a cute little mom & pop's shop that's been in business for decades. They serve fresh ingredients and great quality fish. Each dish is prepared almost to perfection! The service is outstanding and the place is well kept. It was mid-November and the weather was a bit chilly. They set up outdoor dining to follow Covid-19 safety restrictions and provided heaters for each table. There were also large umbrellas to shield guests from the wind. The staff all wore masks and gloves. I got the Omakase Course. 14 different types of Nigiri Sushi: 4 Way Tuna - Toro - Chu-Toro - Tuna - Negi-Toro YellowTail Belly Kampachi Red Snapper Scallop Bonito Albacore Uni Ikura Sardine Ocean Trout In addition, we had 1/2 dozen Pacific Oysters for an appetizer, an order of Amaebi (2 pieces) and a Spicy Tuna on Fried Rice Cake. Everything was beyond delicious. It was absolutely "melt in your mouth" sushi. It felt like a dining experience, in Japan. If I lived in the surrounding areas, this would definitely be my go-to spot for fresh sushi! See what I did there.... Hence the perfect business name, SUSHI SPOT! Big ups to Chef Taku and Sous-chef Mika for the great food preparation, excellent presentation and the delicious meal. We had outstanding servers: Albert and Evelyn, who were very attentive and professional throughout our visit. I would highly recommend eating at Sushi Spot! Try them once and you'll be hooked!

Yelp
Great sushi and people are nice. Portion was kinda small but honestly with the quality that was given out, but I don't mind. Would totally buy the albacore salad again Unfortunately, didn't take any pictures because I'm new to yelp :)

Yelp
Been a fan for 20+ years. Just go. Other 'best of LA' sushi is mostly about the venue. This is 100% focused on the fish. Quality is absolutely tops

Yelp
Best sushi in the San Fernando Valley? Many argue that Sushi Spot is. At its price point, I'd say it's definitely hard to beat. Sushi Spot managed to exceed my optimistically high expectations, based off a friend of mine who has been raving about this place for years. I'm unfortunately not in this area often anymore, except Sundays in which they are closed, so opportunities have been limited for me to stop in. I'm glad I finally got to try it. Came here Friday, August 3rd, around 8:30pm after work. My friend had reserved some seats at the bar, and we were all pretty ready to splurge. We decided to go with the omakase, and keep going until we couldn't anymore. Price is based on how many/which pieces you eat, which could actually turn into a pretty endless (and expensive) experience. We tried to watch our budget towards the end, but it did get a little out of control (in a good way). Omakase started out strong, with a plate of nigiri containing toro, bluefin tuna, albacore belly, and negitoro. My favorite of the set was the toro, though all were great. Next up was a plate of nigiri containing red snapper, black snapper, and halibut. Red snapper was my favorite of the three. Then came kampachi, shima aji, and yellowtail belly. Yellowtail belly won the third round for me. After that came halibut fin, scallop, snow crab, and wagyu beef. At the end, we ordered a few more additional pieces of sardine, blue shrimp, ocean trout, and bonito. This was definitely a splurge, but I wanted to get a good taste of everything they had to offer. The whole dining experience was very enjoyable, and I really liked the warm rice they use here. Particularly, towards the end when pieces were coming one at a time and had less time to cool off and lose its texture. All of the nigiri was well-made and well-balanced. The selection is not anything crazy, but they have all of the essentials plus some extra. Blue Shrimp was a first for me. If you like sushi, this place is definitely worth visiting. I would recommend it, no doubt!

Yelp
It may not look like much on the outside, but this place is serving high quality food and service on the inside! I've been here a couple times and they've been consistent with their service and quality of sushi. I highly recommend trying their set course if you're new to sushi or just want a sampler of the different types of sushi available. So many delicious and fresh pieces of fish are served on the set course and plated beautifully. My absolute favorite items on the set course are the red snapper, baked scallop, and salmon! My friends and I enjoyed our set courses with a bottle of Kikusui, which is nice to sip on while enjoying our sushi. Shoutout to our server Mark for always checking on us, informing us on what items he was bringing to our table, and for letting us know when we needed to use soy sauce on our sushi! It's an awesome experience when you're eating good food and receiving great service at the same time.

Yelp
We came here for dinner last night on accident. We had tried another sushi place a few week prior and couldn't remember the name. It was in the same area and looked like the same strip mall. Once we got the menu, I realized this isn't the same place but since we were already seated so we decided to stay. Let me just tell you how happy I am that we did!!! Hands down best sushi I've ever had. My boyfriend ordered this sampler thing they had that was $45 for most of the items they have there and they bring it out in courses. He said "omg this is so good" to everything. From snapper to clams. I ordered a bunch of different items and felt the exact same. They have a garlic tempura appetizer that was soo good. It's deep fried small pieces of garlic. It was a nice change of place from the edemame I always get for my appetizer at other places. We sat on a cute patio that had umbrellas and patio heaters. The service I'd give 20 stars to if I could. The waiters were the best I've had in months. All of them. Our main server was tall, had dark curly hair and he was so awesome. Sometimes the other waiters would also help you out and bring out your food and they were incredible too. You can tell they all work together to make sure they give you impeccable service. We were both so happy during and after our dinner. It was a pleasant surprise! Don't be fooled by their mom and pop strip mall location. This is hands down the best sushi in the sfv and all of LA. Can't wait to eat here again!

Yelp
We've come here with friends a few times and the food is always delicious. We've been going regularly to a spot with very expensive sushi and thought that it was unbeatable but honestly this food rivals that restaurant for a fraction of the price. My wife and I are sushi purists and we can tell you that the food here is legit. Don't pass it up.
google avatar

Yelp
The nigiri sushi here is so so good!!! I've had the chefs course and the omakase, and the fish is always super fresh and super tasty. I will drive an hour every time just to get sushi here, it's so good. The baked scallop and mussel is also very delicious. I personally have never had scallop like they cook it here. It's never too fishy, and full of flavor. I wish I could have it at home!!!

Yelp
Food: 4: Great, high quality, exotic and uncommon fish selections, nice and tasty preparations. Portions are small, and they have a very limited menu of hand-rolls, specialty rolls and cooked plates. This restaurant is primarily a "sushi" spot (pun intended!). Drinks: 3: Beer, wine, sake, shochu. No spirits. Limited selections. Service: 4: Servers and sushi chefs are polite and to the point. Not so flexible with substitutions and off-menu requests. Parking: 2: Off street self-parking available but spots are tight and hard to find. Their parking lot is shared with a dispensary, a 7-11, and the homeless. You get the picture! Street parking is also very limited. Venue: 3: Older basic appointments. Small place. Not good for large groups. Very limited waiting area inside. Price: 3: Expensive for the portion sizes when compared to similar restaurants. We have been a customer of owner and main chef Taku-san and his wonderful team at Sushi Spot for many years! Sushi Spot fulfills a nice niche in the crowded landscape of sushi restaurants in the San Fernando Valley. Unlike most other Japanese restaurants here, their approach is a little more towards the traditional and purist side. They only have a few rolls and cooked dishes and they try to not deviate from their formula. In fact, the menu and the chefs have not changed for years! The ingredients and the overall quality are always very consistent. If you are in the mood for good quality and unique nigiri and sashimi, this is the place. If you're looking for huge sauce drenched rolls with imaginative and funny names, this is not the place, but trust me; there are several other restaurants along the same stretch that would fulfill your cravings! At any rate, Sushi Spot gets my accolades for bearing the torch of continuing to provide authentic high quality sushi for so many years. I am hoping for many more!

Yelp
One of the best sushi bars in California let alone LosAngeles. The female sushi chef is incredible and the fish is on another level. In addition to that, the rice is warm and the fish is super fresh and cold. I've never had a bad experience. This is definitely our go to spot. Very unassuming tucked away in the corner behind a 7-Eleven. Trust me, it is AMAZING!
google avatar

Azad S.

Yelp
This place was great as far as better quality sushi goes. The toro was some of the best I've ever had, even better than Chiba, and that's saying a lot.
google avatar

Kelli K.

Yelp
One of my favorite places! Very lowkey and almost hidden in a shopping center. Their fish is fresh and the place is clean!
google avatar

Yelp
Best sushi in the valley!!! Garlic tempura is a must. Sushi always so fresh and delicious. Would highly recommend trying Sushi Spot.

Yelp
What just happened? I feel like I just got smacked by deliciousness out of a shopping center sushi place. Chef's set = 100

Rostam Z.

Yelp
This place is in the top 5 for best sushi bars in the valley. Having been to Japan multiple times, I can confidently say that Sushi Spot is one of the best. Their omakase is delicious and the chefs really know what fish are best during certain season. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for sushi in the valley.

Jeremy H.

Yelp
Came here for the first time and tried the set menu. The quality of sushi is laughable, borderline inedible in some cases. The salmon that came with the set was a weird cut and was chewy and fishy. The edamame was very dry and over cooked. The rolls were drenched in runny, over sweet eel sauce. The miso soup was bland and the waiter even told us they only put raw onion and tiny pieces of dried seaweed in it. Very odd. No need to come back.
google avatar

Jun D.

Yelp
A hole in the wall definitely. Decent place, decent price, and excellent sushi. I stick to the Chef's Course meal, $35 - $37 (price changes sometimes). Better than Sugar Fish 10x. Service and Quality are tip top shape. 4 star because their rice needs a bit of work.
google avatar

Candace R.

Yelp
I've been here twice and the second time sealed this place's fate for me. The first time I came here, everything was pretty good, the service was attentive, and I left full wanting to come back. The second time I came, I was alone for dinner and the service was terrible. After being sat down, I waited 10 minutes for a menu before I had to flag someone down and ask if I had a server. No apologies from any staff for their lack of service to me; I had to flag someone down for almost every thing - more water, more ginger, the check. I ordered $70 worth of food and drink for 1 person so it's not like I wasn't worth being tended to. If you're a regular and the staff gets to know you, I could see how you might think this is the "best sushi place in the valley" but that's still a stretch for me. Really disappointed in being treated the way I was and will not return.

Yelp
Solid 4 stars Another great sushi restaurant on the street of Ventura Blvd. Sushi Spot delivered a satisfying meal. Chef Taku did an amazing job. Another Chef that pride of what he serves. Chef Taku will let you know if you need to dip your nigiri in shoyu or not. The service was excellent and the chef was very friendly. The restaurant itself is very small. I recommend sitting at the bar, but there is a 4 order minimum per person at the bar. I usually order from the special or recommendation only. For me salmon, albacore, yellowtail and you basic tuna you can always get. This is was what we ordered, and I recommend ordering. Skip Jack Tai Scallop with real wasabi root. Amazing!!! Kohada it's up there with one of the best I had tried. Engawa(Halibut Fin ). So good and fatty!!!! Bonito Spanish Mackerel. Delicious! Uni. So fresh and sweet. The portions was huge! Spicy Albacore Crunchy Roll. It looks plain, but it was very tasty. My experience at Sushi Spot was very positive. I will definitely return.

Yelp
Sushi Spot.  You would never imagine that you can get high-quality authentic Sushi in a tiny strip mall in Tarzana.  A friend who knows this place well brought me here. This restaurant has been here for 30 years! The owner-chef, Taku-san (yes! my Japanese respect LOL ) and sous-chef Mika san are very professional. Some might think that they are not too friendly, but well, Sushi chefs are not bartenders. They only focus on making/serving their dishes. Their kitchen is on the second floor so that they can make the maximum room for customers on the first floor. Their fish is so fresh!. Although I'm not a big fan of tuna, their tuna melody was so testy and above and beyond. They are reasonably priced for amazing sushi and sashimi. I loved my dining experience here. It is too bad that they are 20 miles away from my house.
google avatar

Guyaneh E.

Yelp
The only thing that's worth having here is the fresh oysters. The special rolls are nothing special. $15 and they're small and not even rolled correctly. The service was ok. Nothing great. I'd only go here for the oysters.

Yelp
The best Sushi in LA! I love their Red Bean Mochi! & Blue Crab Role! Nice atmosphere! Great Service and Sushi! They are always very polite and fast!

Yelp
OMG probably the best omakase I've had in YEARS! Especially if you like traditional nigiri. Went for my 4 year anniversary and my wife and I were beside ourselves. We're taking her father there for Father's Day. Go!

Yelp
In a totally badly designed generic strip mall, Sushi Spot may not look like much. From the outside, it looks like another hootchie strip mall Sushi joint that serves mediocre California rolls, kitschy rainbow & caterpillar rolls that would appeal mostly to the amateur Sushi enthusiast. Even the inside is slightly awry, & the interior design would not win an award from Architectural Digest. Although the amiable Sushi Chef will honor requests from his customers for the above mediocre items where there is no nuance & flavours that conflict, he is extremely competent & adept at creating his own versions of Edomaè (eh doh mah eh) Sushi & Sashimi based more on classic Japanese clean, subtle yet flavourfully fresh flavours. I asked the Chef for his version of Omakasè (oh mah kah seh) or table d'hôte where the Chef makes the decision as to what he wants to serve that is the best in terms of ingredients or culinary style. My only request was that he not serve any Saba, which is a very healthful fish to eat, but I'm not enamored to its often heavy oiliness. 1) Trio of Tunas: 3 variations of tuna Nigiri (nee ghee ree) Sushi that consisted of a slice of slightly aged, fatty, melt-in-your-mouth O-toro; Big Eye Tuna from Hawai'i that was firm yet velvety, sea meaty; chopped O-Toro topped with chopped green onions that added an herbal, funkiness to the aged, naturally oil rich fatty tuna. It was a meaty rich way to enter into an Omakase. 2) To clear the palate, Sushi rice was circumscribed w/ a wide band of black Nori seaweed topped w/ baked Engawa which is the ribbon of white meat found around the fins of halibut & chopped green onions w/ a dab of Momiji Oroshi, grated Japanese Giant White Radish infused w/ red chile paste. The texture is soft yet subtly meaty. 3 The Stuffed Calamaro caught my eye. It was just the body of a small squid stuffed w/ crab flavoured Surimi. I requested a bit of mayonnaise w/ a touch of sriracha for my dipping sauce, but the Chef kindly also added a sweet soy reduction since that was the usual style. Nice way to add more flavour variation to a single dish. 4) Uni Sushi/Ikura Sushi: Nice pairing of two very sea worthy ingredients. The Uni was light colored yet had nicely nuanced minerality of the sea w/ custard-like texture. The Ikura or salmon roe was infused w/ Sho-yu (soy sauce) that was seasoned with Sake (sah keh) & Mirin, a sweetened sake). The excellent quality Nori seaweed 'paper' also added a nice Umami that emphasized the gifts from the sea. 5) I requested the Hotate (hoh tah teh) from Hokkaido-, the northern most big island in a hand roll garnished w/ only cucumber & Shiso (shee soh) leaf. No mayonnaise to cover up the refined sweet, oceanic minerality with moist, velvety texture with again the exemplary Nori that ups the game. This was an exercise in purity w/ the simple ingredients shining out to prove that quality exists in the House of Sushi Spot. 5a) All the above was paired with Abarashiri by Yaegaki (yah eh gah kee) which came out almost totally frozen in the 300ml bottle. It was a unique way to keep the Sake chilled....form followed function. Abarashiri was high in alcohol (18%-19%) so it was similar to a Tokubetsu Junmai Sakè which is fortified by added alcohol beyond the brewing process. This brings about a Sakè that is extremely dry which is ideal for Sushi/Sashimi since a clean palate cleansing characteristic is essential. The flavour is slightly citrusy with a heavier Ko-ji lees fermented after taste that only lasts a moment. 6) Tamago: Conclusion of the main meal ended on a sweet note w/ a very moist, cushy egg "omelette" stuffed w/ a puree of Neri Ume or salted pickled plum & green Shiso or Japanese "basil" leaf. The Mirin infused sweetness had a slightly Sakè inflected dulcet tone which was contrasted by the salty fruitiness of the Ume paste & refreshed herbally by the fresh, green Shiso. It was an elegant way to end the meal w/ a flavour that the Italians would call agrodolce. For Sushi Novices at Sushi Spot bar: Keep an eye on the Chef to see if he has already applied some kind of sauce to the Sushi. If he has, do NOT dip the Sushi into any more soy sauce since it will kill the flavours that the Sushi Chef is trying to convey. Also the Sushi rice is kneaded into shape very lightly so that if you dip the Sushi in soy sauce, the rice will crumble into your little dish of soy sauce......which is not too cool in that it shows ignorance of Sushi eating etiquette. Best way to eat Sushi to emphasize the flavour of the fish is to eat it with minimal use of the dreaded soy sauce. Nice duo of Sushi Chefs, one of whom is of the female persuasion which is still unusual in the male dominated world of Sushi. Since women make up more than 1/2 of the world population, it would be appropriate to see more in the years to come. Perhaps a more feminine culinary perspective may presage new directions in the glorious art of Sushi.

Yelp
The sushi at this place is phenomenal !! We started with the Fried Squid and Garlic Tempura. Oh My Gosh!!! it was delish. My husband had the Chef Special. Each piece was brought out individually, along with recommendation from the chef as to what sauce to use or not use at all. As soon as he finished what was on his plate, the dirty plate was swept away and a new item brought out. This man ate until he could barely move. He tried things that he would normally never order. He said it was absolutely amazing. I had the sashimi platter. The tuna melts in your mouth. We have been here twice now and the food is wonderful each time. The customer service is spot on and the prices, in my opinion, were more than reasonable. we will def. be back!!

Yelp
Great sushi spot for those who love authentic quality sushi and sashimi. They are in this same location for almost 30 years, same owner and main chief. One of the first sushi restaurants opened on Ventura Boulevard! Service is very fast and friendly, They are all Japanese . Most fish is also from Japan. I prefer the bar seats with "adventurous japanese" omakase , it is a special tasting course with more exotic assortment when the chief chooses what to serve you ; but they offer 2 types of omakase if you prefer to know in advance what You are going to eat, or order rolls you love. Good for a solo or a group of people. You can also sign a bottle with your name that you did not finish and they store it for you till your next visit. Many visitors are regulars and drive from far to get a high quality sushi fix. Tip: do not judge by outside look, if u like fancy, go to Nobu:) parking is usually easy.

Yelp
After spending 10 weeks working in Los Angeles, eating almost every meal out, this is IT! This is the best sushi place in the valley, hands down! Sushi spot is a little restaurant is in the most unlikely tiny strip mall. Visualize this place right next to a seven eleven! I came here on a Tuesday night and the parking lot was full but I was able to find off-street parking pretty easily. When I walked up to the restaurant, there was a half naked homeless man sitting a few feet from the place but he did not bother me and I didn't bother him. The restaurant has an open air feeling. I came during early evening so it was still light. The inside felt bright and cheery. The wait staff was very nice and discreet. The chef behind the sushi bar is Chef Mika. Yes, she is female and yes, she's bad ass! You got to know that if you are a female sushi chef you have to kick butt or you get your butt kicked. For this reason, I sat down at the sushi bar and ordered omakase (Chef's choice). I try to eat clean and healthy when I travel because every meal is out. Chef started with a torched albacore served with crunchy bits and thinly sliced onion. On the side there is shaved dikon that is colored pink with Japanese pepper. This dish had the perfect balance of citrus and salt, heat, crunch and chew factor. Next she brought out tuna three ways - toro (aka fatty tuna, aka tuna belly), regular tuna, and nigitoro. The toro was luscious and unctuous. It was like a sushi orgasm! The tuna was clean and fresh. The nigitoro has a small amount of soy and a little green onion to add a bit of pepper. Next up was halibut and and red snapper nigiri. Each had a piece of shiso leaf tucked under it. Shiso is a Japanese leaf that has the texture of mint but a hint of mustard green. It is one my favorite vegetables in Japanese dishes. Chef Mika instructed me to eat both with no soy and I happily obliged. This dish was followed by kampachi (amber jack) and shima-aji (striped jack). They are the freshest tasting nigiri you will ever lay tongue on. Next and last dish was uni and salmon roe. The uni was a velvet pillow and my mouth was full of joy. The salmon roe was fresh and popped in my mouth with the taste of ocean. The whole meal was perfect end to end. Chef Mika is understated but a culinary force to reckon with. My meal cost $61 before tip. I consider this to be very reasonable given the quality of the meal. I highly recommend this place. Food rating: 5 My lone traveler rating: 4

Yelp
Great food!! Good prices! Can not wait to return! Ordered the tuna tempura roll, crunchy rice and the crunch salmon roll. Ordered a second order of the tuna tempura but added avocado to it. Loved everything!! Will be back soon! Small outdoor seating area but cute enough.
