Went in around 5pm, the staff was very chipper and got us seated. They checked in pretty consistently and refilled our water at a good pace. There was a good variety of sushi rolls- since I don't eat sushi with uncooked fish, that was real nice to find out! The music was a fun collection of covers of modern & 2010s pop, with some 80s covers sprinkled in. The place was decorated with anime-themed memorabilia, though not too much. Small repairs were being done in the bathroom, but it was still usable. I hope this place gets more love!

Sushi X is a great spot. Service is always great. We Love their food. I would recommend all the rolls except the fresh crab roll, taste too fishy. The Godzilla is excellent.

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of sushi. I was told the sushi was delicious, but this review mainly covers atmosphere, service, and options for the sushi-averse who find themselves at a sushi joint because their friends and family love sushi. I went with a party of four, two teens and two adults, on a Friday around 8:00 p.m. We walked, but there is paid street parking in the immediate area outside the restaurant. It's across from a fire station and near a bridge over the expressway, so you may have to venture down a side street to park. Once inside, you immediately feel how intimate the setting is. There are about 10-12 small tables in a pretty small space, so be prepared to get close. We were greeted and seated right away by the server, who was really nice and calm even though he was the only server. He was also pretty knowledgeable about the menu items. We had to wait a bit to order, but that was fine because it gave us time to peruse the menu (have your phone ready to scan the QR code for the menu), check out the interesting decor (all black walls with interesting fusion artwork, and a large screen with a relaxing water and terrain landscape video on a loop), and discover the music playing (super-chill, loungy-vibe covers of popular songs). The sushi menu was compact and simple to order. Unlike some sushi spots that have entrees and side items to satisfy the non-sushi-eating tag-alongs, the menu is not inclusive, which was expected. Here's exactly what you'll have if you don't eat sushi: panko-crusted chicken breast strips with BBQ-ish red sauce, edamame, and a small bowl of rice, all of which were simply ok. We didn't have dessert, but there is mochi, lemoncello cake, and a chocolate peanut butter cup cake. Overall, this is a chill spot with no frills. Cool if you're just looking for a quiet spot to get a quick sushi fix.

I live around the corner from this sushi spot and never knew it was here. Lol. I'm not sure that I was fully convinced by the flavors, but it was good enough for me to give it another try. I really liked the interiors—the perfect amount of lighting and music choice. My only comment for improvement would be not to play sports on the projection wall. It kinda kills the vibe of the place, particularly because the aesthetics of the restaurant seem to be completely different from a sports restaurant. From my view, the idea of this place is to create a Japanese urban feel. It would be cool to see this portrayed on the projection screen. I know Japan has some cool urban history. +prices are affordable Edit- went here for the second time and I had the red chicken. It was delicious, they were also playing some cool music. My rating has gone up to 5 stars.

Catching up on Yelp reviews in 2024. I have been to Sushi X once and I have ordered delivery multiple times. Sushi X has become one of my favorite sushi places in Chicago and it's off the beaten path away from the West Loop and Wicker Park. The first time I went was to celebrate one of my friend's birthdays and he had a huge crowd of about 20+ people so we took up pretty much the entire restaurant. Sushi X is BYOB. Ambiance is pretty dark and almost felt like a nightclub and there is some cool artwork on the walls. The rolls are pretty creative and the special rolls are pretty big. Regular rolls are about $8-$10 while special rolls are about $15-$20. Again, the special rolls are pretty big. They do a roll of the month where a special roll is $12, which is a nice discount. Rolls are packed with rice, which make them pretty filling. Sushi is very fresh and I love their Nigiri. Overall, I am very glad that my buddy introduced me to Sushi X. I have had numerous times and it has been great every time. Service was adequate and I haven't had any delivery issues. I will pretty much eat any rolls and I tend to stick to salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and crab for Nigiri, which are all excellent. Prices are fair for Chicago and portion sizes of the rolls are big so this is actually pretty good value. Definitely give Sushi X a try!

Even though it not too far from where I live, I had never been to Sushi X. We've been going to the places we've known and hadn't ventured out beyond the familiar. Well, I'm glad I did dinner here the other day, because we have another sushi place that's in the circle of sushi places now. Now, in terms of vegetarian sushi options. Well, they have a whole menu area for veggie sushi, which is nice. This section is like the simplistic veggie sushi's most places have, such as one of avocado, cucumber, mushroom, etc. They're basic options, but not something I seek. When we asked about more specialty roles at Sushi X, I found that they had one option listed on the menu and a couple of other great options where they were flexible and even made some recommendations. Buddha Roll - this is the on-menu specialty sushi. It was good. I enjoyed it. Godzilla - This was a recommendation from the waiter. He suggested this was one of the most popular rolls and we could just substitute tempura sweet potato in for the main meat/fish. This ended up being our favorite. Really good and I think the cream cheese made all the difference on this one. So good. One of these substituted rolls we had to "remove" multiple items. For example, shrimp, fish, fish eggs, bacon, etc. that's across the Godzilla and the Maui Waui, which bring me to the next roll. Maui Waui - This was something unique and it caught our eye, because it had fresh mango and fresh pineapple in the roll, which is really unique. It was pretty good. BTW, this was also a sweet potato tempura sub. Oh, before even getting to the sushi's we had the veggie gyoza and they were excellent. Really spicy and flavorful. Loved them. The sauce they come with was awesome as well. That's another thing - every item came with a special sauce and I really enjoyed that. The Maui Waui came with basically the sweet-sour dipping sauce, and one of the other rolls also came with a sauce. Loved the idea of mixing and matching sauces to see what we really ended up liking. Of course there's the soy sauce with wasabi that you always do with sushi, as well. On to the waiter. Our server was pretty interesting. Very cheery and funny and happy kind of a guy. I'd say, a pretty different server experience that you get at most restaurants. As referenced previously, he was good with recommendations, flexible, etc. I got the feeling from the staff walking around that this was a place opened and run by a few friends. It's a good vibe that way. The place itself is kind of a strange kind of hole-in-the-wall type place. It's kind of strange shaped property on the inside. Kind of crooked / angular. They play somewhat loud music for a lively vibe. If I recall, the walls are like painted black. It's a pretty unique spot and definitely a different experience than some of the nearby sushi spots. I'll definitely be coming back to Sushi X. Thanks for making it s special visit and you have a new customer for sure. Oh, and by the way, the server said this when we first sat down - this is going to become your go-to sushi place in the neighborhood. Maybe he was right.

So I just I'm coming off of a 2 and 1/2 day virgin vacation in Chicago. I saw a lot over the weekend, and stumbled into here as it's my last night and it's right next to my Airbnb, and I love sushi. Yet this is a review I'm going to immediately write because this place is fabulous!! I just had the Godzilla roll. This is like super candy sushi! Really tasty...my brain at one point spun off into some sushi haven heavenly universe with dancing fish in the sky while eating it; it must've been the (fabulous) club music playing... In spite of the nightclub vibes, keep in mind this a BYOB venue. Also keep in mind, this fabulous Godzilla roll is on the menu in June, and then it's rotated out, to entice you to come back. I sure would, but alas, back to Boston I go. And thank you my friend who took care of me - I enjoyed your New England Patriots story very much and wish you the best of success!

I'd say the music and vibes in the restaurant are really catered to young adults which is fantastic. The food I felt was not exactly that great. The chicken katsu for example was way too breaded and could barely taste any of the actual meat. The R.O.K dish was way too salty. The sushi does; however, did taste decent. For the quality of food and the pricing I would say it's pretty reasonable. Reason why I gave this a 3 stars is because I told them ahead of them that we were celebrating a birthday and even reminded the waiter during our dining duration. He still forgot anyways which is pretty disappointing.

Chicago' only place to go for phenomenal service and sustainable sushi!!! They need a Michelin star for service and flavor...... small but big in smiles and service.. I recommend always trying the roll Of the month and the spicy miso soup.... A definite Chicago must try!!!!

Here is yet another place for sushi in a city full. If looking for a chill hip place to get this delicacy, come here. Sushi X is just east of the Expressway on Chicago Avenue close to the Blue Line station. Just so happened to be around here so it was convenient. They had just opened up for lunch so we came in and got a table. As with many of these sushi restaurants, there's a menu of contemporary and more traditional rolls, most with some kind of fish. It has a few vegetarian ones. This made choosing pretty easy though. It's $5 for most rolls, which is good. We got an Avocado Roll and a Spinach Roll. Both were awesome. The Avocado Roll was pretty typical, except this one had sesame seeds. Basically if you've had one this isn't much different, but you know what you're getting. The Spinach Roll was more unique. It's seasoned with garlic, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. This was the first time we ever had this type. Good enough. The spinach thankfully wasn't wilted like we thought it could have been like. Cool little place for sushi and some other appetizers. It closes between lunch and dinner Mondays to Fridays. They're open for dinner only on the weekends.

Great sushi. I've dined in and ordered delivery, and it's always fresh and delicious. The maki rocks; some of my faves are the Godzilla, Buddha and Maui Wowie, but everything I've tried is above average. The space is small and a little dark, but the artwork is awesome. Service is fine even if somewhat disinterested.

Sushi sushi everywhere you look around town now but have you noticed it all seems like the same menu after awhile at 80% of them. Not at Sushi X. It's a highly creative and compelling menu of delicious rolls that is a break from the monotony of the California or spicy tuna roll. You can buy those at a supermarket. Why bother? I've been a couple times and ordered for delivery and I love their rolls. There are only a couple places I've been to that have better and they're fantastically expensive. You won't get shaken down here. Check it out!

Something is off with this place. Friends made a reservation for a small party. It was for 6-8 people, it is a small place. Saturday night. There were no other diners. Cash only. BYOB. 6-7 workers. That's a lot of workers for at most 8 people. It felt off. It's not an old school place that "that's how they have always operated" it just seemed sketchy. Clean. Nice staff. All the food went to go. My fiancé and I didn't take anything to go. I just don't consider this a legitimate business. They also close early so it can't be a drunk food place. Do you sushi x. Handle business how it needs to be handled, but I'm not sure how you can pay your employees for one small party, no liquor sales, and NO one else there on a Saturday night that closed early. The bill was $100, but between 6-8 people? That's nothing and in cash. Not my style. I love paying cash and go to legitimate cash only places. It's not my business how they do business, but I'm not getting seen in an illegitimate business where I can't even eat the food. 2 stars for friendliness and cleanliness Edit: now looking at their violations too and leve tímate reviews.... I'm glad I didn't eat anything here

You can't miss this place since the front of the restaurant is covered in a huge mural of a woman. Dinning room is small, maybe 7 tables. The staff is super friendly. There is plants street parking around. Check out their monthly deals for heavily discounted items. Tried the DoubleStack With tuna, salmon, cilantro, avocado, mayo, masago and citrus chili ponzu and the Spicy Tuna w/ masago, sriracha and mayo. Both were very good

This is a small no frills sushi joint, with cool house music and a projector to play background videos while you eat. Nothing fancy, and the sushi rolls definitely don't disappoint! Great prices for even better roll portions. It's also byob! Wasn't a fan of the $5 corkage fee, but not a huge deal. The service was super friendly and quick as well. The best sushi in Chicago. Everything that I order from Sushi x is amazing and consistent. The shrimp fried and pan seared gyoza are great appetizers.

I admit I am not a sushi aficionado, but I AM a snob when it comes to basic California rolls. Crab salad only! No crab stick for me! So when I saw "fresh crab" in the description, I had to try Sushi X. If that is fresh crab...I have no idea what I've been eating at seafood restaurants. The only flavor I tasted was bland fish. It was off-putting enough that I picked the "crab" out of half my rolls. The peanut butter pie was fine, but not enough to redeem the cost of this sad sushi delivery.

Had the lunch special of salad, soup, drink and the double stack roll. As usual, everything was delicious & portions were large Service was prompt and friendly. Place was cozy and quiet. Also ordered the Honey & Dragon Roll to go. Will definitely order again !

I am a big fan of this place. From the service to the quality of food down to the location and accessibility. I come here often, and I am always greeted with a smile and I get to be seated immediately, most of the time I don't have a reservation, but Calling wouldn't be hurtful. This place is cozy and seats probably 50 or less people. There is plentiful paid street parking. My favorites that I like to get is the salad with the ginger cream dressing, I know it sounds weird, but it is so delicious. I like getting the red chicken. I like to get the tempura vegetables and tempura shrimp, these are so delicious and a wonderful start to every meal. We enjoy getting the Godzilla roll and whatever rolls they really have on special because all their fish is fresh and iron. trust my palate to the halves of the sushi maker. Pricing is fair. Sometimes they also are playing the latest sports games on their big screen projector TV as well. Perfect for date night or just a regular evening as well.

Wow lol. Made reservations to travel all the way into town...just to get here for it to be closed for a private event. That's the worst service ever. No text. No call. Just show up to a sign. Lost a customer for sure. should've stuck to door dash. I suggest not coming to this location. Also the patrons outside from said private event were very inappropriate. Will stay far away from here from now on.

The sushi was very reasonably priced and the taste didn't suffer at all! It was all delicious. I loved the double stack roll because it was fresh and had a little kick to it! but honestly everything we got was phenomenal- also they put different rolls each month on special! Also this place is BYOB with a $5 fee which was worth it! The wait staff were the nicest people ever and very accommodating. I will be coming back again soon and ordering out too! Love!!!!

Best sushi in the area, and there is a lot of competition! Limited selection is offered on the menu but ensures higher quality fish. I think it's great they have a focused menu and not endless options where quality may vary. Staff is super friendly too.

This spot in Chicago is a cute little place for sushi! The space intimate and great for a hang out dinner/date night! Be forewarned, this place does not sell any alcohol. So if you like some sake with your sushi, it's BYOB (bring your own booze). I was a little sad I couldn't have some sake with my sushi! But still was good and fun without it! The food is pretty good, taste fresh and full of flavour. I don't remember exactly which rolls we ordered, but we did order 3 rolls and one had mango, which was incredible! Everything cam out fresh, hot food was nice and hot. Service was good, with host coming by every few minutes to top off water, tea or simply check up on you. Because it's a small space, you get lot of attention from staff. Ambiance was fun, with EDM music playing, making me want to dance more than eat [maybe that's why they don't sell alcohol ;) ] ! But over all a fun space. As for price, it was very reasonable and inexpensive. Parking is public on street. Again, since it's a small space, I'd call to see if you can get reservations since may be full or busy on popular weekend evenings.

My normal sushi delivery place is closed on Mondays so I gave Sushi X another shot. I ordered 4 rolls, two special and two basic. The hamachi is far past acceptable freshness with a terrible aftertaste and the salmon is so old that it is more gray than orange. The one roll with the warm cream cheese is actually delicious but I can't believe places justify sending out fish like this so I'm going to X out this place for future consideration.

Meh. I had three rolls, the first two on special: spicy tuna, double stack, and yellow tail. The latter two rolls were very good, but the spicy tuna tasted a bit strange, to me. Maybe it was supposed to taste that way. I ate it, and didn't get sick. It simply tasted weird. Maybe some unique spice combo I don't appreciate. At the end of the meal, that's the impression I was left with: the roll I didn't like. Maybe if I'd ordered something different, I'd be giving them 4 stars now. But they'll likely never get that opportunity. I'm a tourist, and even if I take another trip to Chicago, I'll likely want to try different places. I know everywhere wants to put their own spin on everything, or serve old meat on specials, whatever that was, but there are some staples you shouldn't screw up, if you want return tourist dollars.

Sushi X is pretty good for maki and the service is exceptional. That's how I landed at 4 stars. I don't think they'd win any authenticity awards with lettuce in a few rolls, but the sushi is fresh and satisfying. I've enjoyed my overall experience each time.

4 stars only because of their 1/2 off monthly deals and their lunch specials. If I had to pay full price, I would not enjoy it nearly as much. Sushi X has a cool, hipster interior with house music videos playing over their large projector. The place is BYOB, but service can be slow at times. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but at 1/2 off, can't really complain. If you order online, the 1/2 off won't appear, so make sure you call it in.

Back in town with a hankering for the sush, I ordered up a delivery feast. I hadn't had Sushi X before but had high hopes based on their positive reiews. Their gyoza was one of the best I've had in a long while! Steamed with some great black pepper seasoning then pan seared so just the right amount of barely-there-crisp. At $6 the price is right on this item and it didn't disappoint. The Shitake mushroom roll ($5) was a bit weak. Small and a bit piddly and something just tasted a little off about it. Rolling was very weak and all over the place. Price was on point the roll? Not so much. Lava Roll ($13) - Now I love the idea of Zero Rolls! They have a few to pick from that don't have any rice in them. This particular roll has spicy tuna, cream cheese, scallions inside then tempura deep fry dipper, topped with some eel sauce. Sounds great, right? It just didn't taste delicious to me. Spice level was just right though. Honey Roll ($9) was another that sounded good in theory but it just didn't taste that great. White tuna and tempura flakes on the inside with a tiny bit of honey-sesame mayo on the outside. I don't know what happened but it it didn't work. Now the Chocolate peanut butter Cup ($6) dessert was really good! It may be priced a dollar too high but it actually was a very rich and tasty dessert with excellent execution Sixty dollars later, the best things of the meal were definitely my appetizer and the dessert. Honestly each of my rolls, something just seemed a little off. I love sushi and I wasn't clamoring to finish any of the rolls. Plus every item was a dollar or two too much. Meh. It's not terrible but far from the best I've had in town.

Some of the best sushi I've had! Such an intimate restaurant with great service and even better food! If I could rate them any higher I would! ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!

Came here during the week with a group of 10 people. The inside is very small with our party taking up more than half of the seating. They offer your typical variety of sushi which was very good. Also they are BYOB! Overall a solid choice for good reasonable priced sushi Pro tip- They have monthly rolls that are half off.

This is a pretty decent sushi spot that we frequent in our new neighborhood. Comparable to some others like union sushi, tanuki etc. overall we like it and will keep getting takeout -- and hopefully dining in when things are normal

Came in sat 8 pm with 8 people for a friend's birthday with reservations. Everyone else ordered one roll while my bf and I ordered 3 (we're foodies). However when delivery the food they put ALL rolls on a platter. We had no idea what was what and which was who's. I barely ate any sushi. Will never ever go back here again. They should have separated everyone's order for themselves then we can share. Also the good was bland. Couldn't even taste any of the fish.

Sushi X's staff members are incredibly friendly and pays attention to detail per your request. I highly recommend ordering from them. My favorite sushi roll is their Double Down roll and ROK bowls as they are always very fresh and umami. Sushi X has one of the best packaging which shows the management's care for brand and reputation. They do not disappoint!

Cool sushi joint with a very hip decor as the walls are covered in art. Came over recently for a friend's bday and had a pretty good time. We had a party of 10 here and the restaurant was able to accommodate us on a chilly Wednesday night. The place is BYOB so we had crazy bottles of wine all over the place. Staff was really nice and brought all the rolls out in a nice amount of time. In reference to food, as usual I started out with a seaweed salad which was good and a huge portion. We had so many rolls going that I couldn't keep up LOL. The spicy tuna was very good and we had a bunch of specialty rolls that I don't recall the names of and they were pretty decent. We had a spicy ass buddha bowl that was very good as well. I liked my experience here and would come back if the opportunity knocked. Easy to get to if on public transportation as its right off of the Chicago Blue line stop.

I live in the neighborhood. It is my go to spot for sushi and their roll of the month month deals keep me coming back. Very friendly staff. Brought a friend and she enjoyed the sushi as well.

I came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The restaurant is much, much smaller than I imagined it would be so. The staff was very attentive when we came in after the rest of our party did. The restaurant is BYOB, and they didn't seem to mind that we had brought hard liquor as some other restaurants are. They were also very tolerable and also didn't seem to mind how loud we were. I split the black widow and another mega roll and a sashimi platter with a friend. I think the mega roll was a bit too "mega" for me. I felt like since the roll was so large, there was a lot of "filler" in each roll. The taste of each one felt very average to me, and it was hard to distinguish one from another. The ambience and décor was more enjoyable to me than the food, but If I had a do-over or came back again, I would skip the sashimi and just stick with the rolls- probably the regular-sized ones to see if they would better showcase their sushi.

What a little gem! The restaurant is located right off of busy Milwaukee avenue and there were plenty of parking. My friend had spicy miso soup which he said was awesome. The seaweed salad... my goodness, it was so delicious! We ordered Red Crush and Pollo Loco rolls to stuff our faces while my friend enjoyed his Spicy Tuna Salad and I had the Red Chicken. Every item we ordered were superb. The waitresses were very friend and attentive. The music was a little loud for my taste. I did enjoy the visit. I would definitely go again.

Visiting Chicago and was craving sushi. There was non-metered street parking in front. There is a large mural directly to the left of the front door- so you can't miss it driving by. Showed up around 6pm on Sunday- there was only one other table seated. One other party showed up while we were there. Pretty low-key place. Ordered edamame appetizer- served warm and salted. Ordered the sashimi "mini" which comes with 6 pieces (2 each of 3 different types of fish). Fish was generously sliced (larger than the rice underneath) but was slimier than it should have been. Also ordered the rainbow roll and the spicy tuna roll. Both were a huge let down. The rainbow roll was covered in more avocado than fish. The spicy tuna roll was bland. Both rolls had rice that seemed undercooked- very crunchy. Ugh, so disappointed.

Sushi X rocks! I came for dinner with a friend last night (Thursday) and we loved it. The place is small, but we had no problem getting a table. The staff was awesome (especially Brooke), and they weren't phased when we asked a million questions about the menu and the space. The colorful art and house music give the place great vibes. We ordered oyster shooters to start which were just the right amount of spicy. Then, we shared the yellow jacket, philly, and Godzilla rolls, which were all fresh, well presented, and delicious. Every month, a featured roll is 50% off. This month, it's the Godzilla roll. We somehow managed to make room for Mochi ice cream too. This place is BYOB (with no corkage fee), which is always appreciated, but I would come back here even if I had to pay for drinks.
