The Best Restaurants In Washington Heights - New York - The Infatuation

"Pretty much every neighborhood has a solid sushi spot where you can fill up on raw fish for less than $30, and in Washington Heights, that place is Sushi Yu. Will the sushi here blow your mind? It’s very unlikely. But you can get a sushi deluxe combo for $26.95, and the dining room—with its wooden furniture and hanging plants—is perfectly quiet and pleasant. Google
I will miss this place. I used to go to the restaurant when they were on 181st St., and then I got their food when they moved into the Q Mart store, but they have closed for good. They had good prices for the sushi, and I never had any problems with them. I’m sorry for those who did have some issue with their food. Don’t know what you guys ordered, but I’m glad I never came across those issues. I will miss this place. It no longer exist. They are gone forever. But this place was called “Sushi Yu 2.” Maybe “Sushi Yu 1” still exists and is the same owner?

Google
Good sushi 🍣. Fairly quick service. Decent prices. One of the closest sushi places around my neighborhood. They weee very accommodating. The place needs a bit more ambiance in my opinion.... but it’s fairly straight forward in terms of sushi menus.

Google
This is where I go to whenever I'm in the mood for sushi. Rolls are fresh and tasty, staff is friendly. Pity they no longer had the sit down space as they did when I first ordered from here. Recommended.

Google
I've eaten here a few times before with no problems, but tonight I ordered 3 rolls, 2 of which were inedible. The fish is discolored. I had one piece and it immediately tasted off. When I unwrapped the roll the salmon which is normally an orange color was brown on the inside pieces. The tuna is a white-ish faded pink. This was after a 2-hour wait for delivery. When I called and asked for a refund (I even only asked for a partial refund as I didn't insist on the non-fish rolls since those can't go bad) they were extremely rude rather than taking ownership and apologizing. I will not be going back again and hope that I don't get sick from the piece that I ate. Dining in has been fine, but I wouldn't want to give my business to a place that runs this way.

My brother was really craving sushi and we found this place in the Heights. We sat outside and had fast service. We both ordered bento boxes (shrimp tempura and chicken). I also got a side of shrimp, avocado, and mango roll. The seafood tempura (appetizer) was mostly veggies, I was hoping for more seafood. But overall each bite was tasty, and we will be returning.

Google
One of my pet peeves about going to any restaurant is feeling rushed in my experience. That’s exactly what I received from this establishment, the waitress was hounding the whole time, never available when you do need them and she would make mistakes in the order. The food was not much better, very mediocre for my taste buds honestly.

Google
I discovered this place just before the pandemic began. I was impressed with the quality of ingredients and portions. I am glad they found a way to remain open and are now even seating inside. And the food is just as good, if not a little more expensive. I'm still happy to pay for quality food that is fresh and kindly served.

Google
It’s terrible disgusting make me throw up I saw the manager or owner (old Asian man) put someone else’s used rubber band chopsticks and wasabi into a new sushi dish plate!!! OMG how unsanitized and disgusting!!! Man sorry never ever come again

Yelp
Was so hungry so I went here. Food was good and so was service and staff! Food didn't take long to come and i'd recommend!

Yelp
This has always been one of my favorite spot for Japanese food. Since COVID emerged in 2020, I haven't sat down to eat in any restaurant these past 3 years... still won't. Today, I decided to order my favorite for delivery. As with other establishments their prices also have gone up ~30%. My beloved beef negamaki bento box that cost $18.50 now cost $32.95. The gyoza that cost $5.95, is now $8.95. Those 2 things that pre-COVID cost less $25, now cost $42. Added to the bill was $10.95 for delivery charge. For 2 person order it cost $80 that 2 1/2 years ago was under $50. Overall, the food tasted fresh, well seasoned, delicious, and still a favorite for me. The amount given in the bento made enough for 2 servings. I think next time, I'll order over the phone, walk 1 mile each way to pick up the food, and save myself the $11 delivery charge. Although pricey, I'll still buy from them, just not as frequent as before.

Yelp
They don't miss, new location but same poppin' sushi with care. Neighborhood needs more like it.

Nicole K.

Yelp
I waited 2 hours for food from this place and called to see if it had been picked up. When I first called a man hung up on me without answering my question. When I called back he told me it had left. My order was subsequently cancelled. Don't trust these liars and don't order from here.

Yelp
Came in for a late night snack around 30 minutes before close so this may have affected service and how the food was prepared. Even so, they should be just as prepared at anytime during the open hours and they all seemed checked out by the time that we walked into the restaurant, not a good sign. ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 6/10 Inside it was rather spacious, with a decent amount of seating, probably enough for 15-20 people. The organization was pretty standard, with nothing spectacular decor wise. Very average. SERVICE : 5/10 The wait staff was definitely checked out seeing as we walked in about 30 minutes before close. The were nice enough but clearly I felt unwanted, which is a bad sign in a restaurant. FOOD: 7/10 We ordered: shrimp tempura roll, tempura sweet potato roll, salmon avocado roll, chicken ramen and tendon rice dish. Shrimp Tempura Roll - Average overall. The presentation was nice and the roll was as expected of a shrimp tempura roll but I was not overly impressed. Tempura Sweet Potato Roll - This was the best made of the 3 rolls ordered. The roll was crispy and flavored well. Compared to other places sweet potato rolls, this is about the same level, which is good. Salmon Avocado Roll - Again average. Chicken Ramen - Overpriced for $12 with the chicken basically being a friend chicken patty on the side. The soup wasn't bad but just not what I was expecting. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 4/10 I didn't feel wanted here so I don't really think I'll be coming back. TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: Pass on this place. There are better places for sushi and ramen. Unless you have to go here, I'd avoid it. OVERALL: 5/10 Very average. Food is edible, but nothing I would go out of my way for.

Yelp
This place is delicious I definitely recommend the spicy salad, the volcano roll and the spicy white fish roll. The waiters and waitresses are friendly and the ambiance is nice and relaxing. Weekends can be pretty packed but if you don't mind taking out then that's always an option.

Howard M.

Yelp
Not as good as it was when it was on 181st Street and the prices are through the roof. Fish feels like it was frozen and defrosted but only partially. Very disappointing

Yelp
The sushi is great and the staff is awesome. We are regulars here and have never had a meal that was anything other then amazing. Lunch specials with soup and salad or a full dinner feast, doesn't matter what you get the sushi is always spot on.

Yelp
This places delivery was awesome! The sushi lunch is a great deal and the food was delivered in less time than expected when I ordered over the phone. The soup came hot and nothing spilled in transportation! The sushi was good too. The california and spicy tuna rolls were my favorite :)

Kris S.

Yelp
Sushi was good. However, the Chicken Noodle, after one hour's delivery, became stale, rancid and unpalatable. Honestly, I had a stomachache last night after having their food. I don't even know which one I should blame for, Sushi or the Noodle. Try the Sushi and avoid the Noodle like the plague!

Yelp
Everything was good alright, today was the first time I ordered from this place. Ordered a Dragon Roll which had an ok taste though it did break apart a bit, but that doesn't bother me you still eat it lol. Also ordered a Tuna, Salmon and Yellowtail Combo which was my favorite of everything I ordered would definitely reorder this. Also ordered Agedashi Tofu which was ok (Im a huge fan of tofu and I know how difficult adding flavor to it is, the sauce helped a lot) I also ordered a lychee Japanese soda which was an interesting taste, honestly liked it. In total everything was 55.35 and taxes were few cents away from being 5 dollars more. Therefore TOTAL was: 60 with a few cents change. I literally only had 61 on me and gave them that, wish I had more, but unfortunately my mother borrowed my purse which had my wallet. When I gave him 61 he looked at me and asked, "that's all the tip?" I honestly only had that. I wasn't expecting taxes to be 5 dollars and literally only had 61. I felt so bad. Wish they've said delivery tip wasn't free so I could have ordered it another day so I can actually have given more tip than I did today. Would I order again? Maybe yes, but will only order the combo Tuna, Salmon and Yellowtail Combo it was great. It is over priced in my opinion though but I've heard great things about it and wanted to try it out. Conclusion: it's alright. Good to vary once in a while to try new places out.

Yelp
the best sushi place in the neighborhood. the staff is very friendly and accommodating. the sushi is pretty good and prices are reasonable. there are lot of appetizers and noodle dishes as well. my fiancé does not like the noodles- says there isn't enough flavor. you get a discount if you pay cash. when they open the windows- a lot of flies come in.

Yelp
For affordable, yet tasty sushi & lightening fast service, this uptown spot is the move! You receive edamame upon arrival and fresh pineapple and a toothpick fight for a single maraschino cherry when you're ready to close out. The interior of the place is minimalist but it's still warm and cozy. I'd easily come back a million times again!

Yelp
Best sushi in Washington heights! I love their lunch special. Definitely my go to sushi spot.

Yelp
A bit overpriced for mediocre sushi. Let me first say, I've never had sushi delivered! My boyfriend and I wanted a quiet Friday night at our place so we stayed in. We reluctantly ordered from Sushi Yu since it's the only sushi place that delivers in the area. We immediately noticed rolls were more expensive than other official sushi restaurants we've visited. Isn't this place kinda fast food sushi? That doesn't add up. Also, they didn't have Eel Avocado rolls on the menu which is my favorite roll. Bummer! I ordered the Christmas Roll ($12.95) which was actually delicious. However, the Spicy Tuna and Spicy Salmon were hard to differentiate and just ok while the Salmon Mango roll was decent. Sushi Yu is nothing to rave about but will probably satisfy your craving. Our total was $42, at this price we probably should've just gone to Geisha Sushi instead. They are cheaper and much better quality.

Daniel P.

Yelp
This place is an absolute hidden gem in the Hudson Heights neighborhood. We go here for our anniversary dinners. The sushi is simply fantastic and a terrific value. We usually get the sushi boat for 2. It's tons of sushi, with beautiful big pieces of fish for the sashimi. The fish is really flavorful and fresh. I just love this place. You have to go.
google avatar

Chuck B.

Yelp
Sushi Yu has been around for forever. I live in the area, and basically order from there whenever I want get a hankering, as it's the only legitimate, decent sushi place within a mile or so (Next Door, a few blocks up, also has sushi, and it's pretty good, but I don't think they deliver to my part of the neighborhood). I personally like the Salmon/Tuna/Yellowtail combo, with the "Christmas Roll". Really, really good. The fish is pretty fresh, the tempura is nicely done. All in all, decent, credible sushi. So why only three stars? The price. It's been steadily creeping up, bit by bit, and at this point, it's fairly expensive, and not just for the neighborhood. Also, I've noticed when ordering rolls that those are getting smaller and smaller. Order a roll combo and you're getting six relatively small pieces per roll. A roll, in my experience, is eight pieces. They are the only game in (that part of) town, so I guess they can get away with it, but there's a little aggravated buzz in my brain every time I order from them now, as I know that for my wife and myself, it's going to be like $60 or $70 with tip for the delivery guy. That's really a lot for ordering in. If there were another decent option, I'd take it. But there isn't, and I do like me some sushi, so there you go . . .

Nicole R.

Yelp
The sushi was not good and overpriced. Customer service was awful, after ordering my food I was ask to wait outside in the cold for my food (FYI I am fully vaccinated). If I hadn't pay my food I would have walked away. Never returning here again !
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
The sushi is very well priced and is a great snack. I tend to use delivery and it is always very fast and tastes good. The service is nice and this is my go to sushi place every single time
google avatar

Turnkey K.

Yelp
Friendly waitress and cashier. I ordered the pork Ramen and had a bad taste in my mouth after eating half of the bland watery broth. The pork was dry and tasted twice cooked and two days old. I wished I had stayed home and made my own packaged ramen, it would have been tastier. My friend ordered the appetizer tempura, it was soggy and tasted of expired ingredients. I am sorry to write such a harsh review as I want neighborhood restaurants to thrive. They did subtract the inedible tempura dish from the bill. My advice to Sushi Yu is get your selves new kitchen staff and someone that can cook.
google avatar

Katt M.

Yelp
Avoid. Have tried several times, and always disappointing. Does not taste fresh, and the staff treats you as a nuisance.

Yelp
This is a good place for takeout sushi. The food is good and it's reasonably priced. HOWEVER, tonight I went to pick up an order that I called in for and they accused me of not tipping enough. I tipped 11.5%. For an order I walked in and picked up. No one delivered it to my door. No one waited on me at a table. If they are accosting me for the quality of my tip on a take-out order, I won't give them my business again.

Yelp
Came here with one of my good friends for a quick take-away lunch back in June. The place is pretty reasonable for lunch, and since it was around the corner from my apartment, it seemed right. The place is owned by Chinese people, as most Japanese restaurants are these days... so I already knew that the quality of the food was going to be sub-par. My friend ordered a chicken teriyaki bento, and I had a salmon teriyaki bento. My salmon teriyaki was pretty standard, not really grilled like the way I like it. My friend's chicken teriyaki looked like boiled chicken smothered in teriyaki sauce. It didn't look very appealing. Chicken teriyaki SHOULD be grilled, not boiled or whatever Sushi Yu 2 does. My friend also noted that her rice smelled funky, but I didn't smell it...so I don't know about their rice. I didn't have a problem with it. Their miso soup was also a little on the salty side, so this makes me think that they used prepacked miso soup base to make their soup. Most of the times, if you make miso soup from scratch, it shouldn't be so salty. I feel that this joint, like many of the restaurants around the area, cater to the general tastes to its local clientele. To be honest, if you want better Japanese food, you should go down to St. Mark's... but if you don't have the time, this place can fill you up. It might not necessarily be the best, but it'll get the job done. The food just didn't cut it for me... I don't think I will come here again.
google avatar

Hansel B.

Yelp
I've only had take out here. I usually stick to the sushi rolls. All the tuna rolls I've had here are very good, but the salmon is not as good. The sashimi is good quality, but overpriced. If you are in Washington Heights, this is probably your best option, all the other sushi places are very inconsistent so you are playing Russian roulette hoping you catch them on a good day. Overall, this would do in a pinch if you are craving sushi... but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Luc G.

Yelp
Tried going here today for lunch. I went inside asked if she was open for lunch to eat in, she said outside. Ok, I told her outside was fine. After waiting outside for about 5 minutes she comes out and say "sir sorry but I don't have time to serve you we're very busy bye" she then went back inside. Never again will I go there.

Troy C.

Yelp
I dropped in and ordered take out from this place for the first time. After reading reviews stating it was alright/average and having little negative reviews and being the first time, I ordered teriyaki chicken and vegetable tempora as a safe option :-) All I can say is that would avoid this place, the tempora was over cooked and over battered and the chicken teriyaki was bland. After I had given up on the tempora I started with the teriyaki, it was only then I found the freshly cooked fly, yes a fly...
google avatar

Samadhi Z.

Yelp
I like their location but the Philadelphia rolls are made with smoked salmon so it has that heavy lox taste. Not a ck good combo with cream cheese. If that were different then I'd order from here more often

Jerry Joan P.

Yelp
They forget my chop sticks and soy sauce on the side. Horrible delivery service. Do not order anymore!

Yelp
Ehhh....this place kind of blows. - NO type of atmosphere. - Servers showed no emotion, they acted like robots. - NO music? WTH? I heard myself breathing. The sushi was very, very blah. Spicy Tuna tasted like it was wet gum stuck under my shoe. The 2 roll lunch special for $10 is NO WAY worth it. Honestly, I feel like my lunch was worth $2. I just gave them a crisp $10 for the hell of it. Oh well, next time I'll know to keep on walking.

Yelp
Me and my brother went to this place to eat sushi with our dates!! I must say for a sushi spot in the heights is very unusual because is surrounded by Dominicans!! Anyways we found this spot and it looked like a regular Chinese take out spot. We went in and the place wasn't even that big but it was welcoming. We sat down and immediately was greeted by our server. Se served us water and brung us some edamame bean to munch on and some oshibori towels. We took a look at the menu and everything was cheap! 6 peaces of sushi for 5 bucks you can't beat that!! So for starters I order at least 5 rolls of sushi and my date order some dumplings. A Sapporo beer to drink and a coke! My brother also order at least 5-6 rolls of sushi. He loves sushi and his date order 3 rolls of sushi!! We order the box for entree witch brings a salad, rice, little dumplings, a vegetable medley and the meat of your choice. I chose the beef teriyaki! My date order the salmon teriyaki. My brother had the shrimp and his date had the chicken. Our waiter was always attentive to us and always had our water's full. The sushi came to our table and it was amazing!! I was so amazed that I had to take a picture. I don't usually take picture of food but this sushi plate was just amazing that I had too. After the sushi was done our waiter said that he will give us time to digest the sushi before he brings our entree. After 15-20 minutes of waiting our server asked us if we was ready for our entree. We said "bring it". The food came to our table and we just drooped our jaws because it was a big plate. After we was done with our entree we was so stuffed that we couldn't order dessert. We told him that we can't have dessert and that we really wanted dessert but we was stuffed. We asked for the check and our waiter brung us a fruit cocktail and told us that is on the house. That was a nice gestured. I opened the Check and to my surprise it wasn't that much. It was so cheap that me and my brother just burst out laughing.our server asked us what was so funny? We told him if this was a joke? He said no that is your actual price!! We was just amazed that the bill was $120 for all we ate. If we would of went to eat sushi at downtown manhattan our bill would off be $300-$400 dollars! It was a great day and we will be going back!!

Yelp
I would rate Sushi Yu just under 4 stars, but I'm rounding up because both their table and delivery service in combination with their food quality are always up to par. I started out getting the sashimi here but I really like their rolls better, especially the spicy white fish roll. There are a few items in the past that they have been consistently out of, but nothing I couldn't live without. They have lunch specials Mon-Saturday from 12 to 3:30 for $8.50 with your choice of two rolls. Sushi Yu 2 is not necessarily a destination place, but if you feel like lazing around the 'hood and want some good sushi I'd suggest some sake and an Uni roll.

Yelp
I ordered from this place today and all I can say is that everything was excellent. For about 22 dollars I got a Bento box full of beef Nagasaki with a nice serving of vegetables in sauce, white rice, shrimp dumplings, and California roll with miso soup and seafood salad included. Food seemed clean and decently delicious. Not to mention, but my order arrived faster than expected which is a plus. Their time, service, price, and food were all good. I recommend it. I didn't know but now I know who to order Japanese food from in the Heights. Will be ordering again in the near future.

Yelp
Worth ordering when you can! I love tempura. Easy, quick delivery. I've never not gotten something I asked for or had an order messed up.

Yelp
Originally I was going to give this place 3 stars, but after debating it with my roommate I am going to give this neighborhood joint 4 stars. Why you may ask? Well probably for the most important reason that this is the only decent sushi in the Washington heights area that I can walk to in order to get my sushi fix. Another reason that this place gets a star is because they give you edamame for free when you dine in the restaurant and for dessert they give you a bowl of pineapple. I do love free things. My friends and I went on a Saturday evening and the place was actually pretty crowded, so this was a good sign. The menu had really good options, especially on the specialty maki, which is why it gets another star. I ended up ordering the bamboo roll and the salmon avocado mango roll. Both were excellent choices. My bamboo roll is a riceless roll, which was an interesting option since I've never had sushi without rice. It was really good. All of the textures mixed nicely together and the fish was pretty good quality. My other roll was very simple, but was packed well in the roll and tasted great. My friends definitely got some good looking rolls too. One had the amazing roll, which I will definitely have to try sometime soon and the other got the New York roll, which was really large in size, but looked great because the tuna looked quality and it was packed good so things weren't falling out. I would probably give this a more 3.5 star, but that isn't possible. However given that this neighborhood isn't the best when it comes to quality food options, I am happy to give the 4 star. It will definitely be my go to neighborhood sushi place when I'm having a craving.

Yelp
Personally, I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about. For a good, simple, well-priced sushi meal, Yu2 is definately the bomb. I give it 4 stars because it is very successful at what it is trying to do. It is a small place with maybe 10 or 15 tables, the waitstaff is very, very courteous and attentive, there is a good variety of dishes, the sushi is very fresh, and the prices are reasonable. If you are looking for a nirvana sushi experience, this is not the place to go, but for a weeknight or casual weekend dinner that won't break your bank, this is a fantastic option in Wash Hts. Also, their "sushi boat" option looks totally fun for small groups (for 35 bucks youget a huge thing of sushi to share). UPDATE: The "Love Boat" is actually 48 bucks and plenty of food for two or three with an appetizer (hamachi, tuna, white tuna and swordfish sashimi with a great eel and avocado and spicy tuna roll) . Deee-lish!

Maribel C.

Yelp
Love this place, my favorite place for sushi cravings. Shrimp bento box is my favorite!

Yelp
Solid 3 stars. Free edamame to start - +3 Servers didn't take drink orders until I flagged them down to ask - -1 Server didn't offer to take order until promoted - -1 Sushi came out fairly quickly - +1 Sushi was too damn big to fit in my mouth and kept falling apart. Had to [awkwardly] ask for a knife. Knife didn't help - -2 However, sushi was fresh and everything tasted good - +1 They also have brown rice - +1 Free pineapple at the end - +1 I'd go again and try the sashimi next time

Yelp
Sushi boatttt! Four of us split a late night sushi boat for two and gyoza. Everything was enjoyable and the service was quick. I'd definitely go back if I were in the area again. The Tuna and salmon in particular were both excellent.

Yelp
Girlfriend and I walked here from 104th St. It was quite a walk and we were hungry. We also had our dog with us. They were very friendly and accommodating to our dog and let him sit outside, next to us. The breeze was blowing and the atmosphere was pleasant. Good service. Nice napkins and spicy wasabi. The sushi also tasted very fresh and the price was reasonable. We each got 2 rolls and 1 large bottle of Saki. The total was $40 not including tip (the sake was $11). Would definitely come back here again. Thanks.

Yelp
My best friend had brought us here, she's talked this place up saying how it's her favorite sushi spot. It was a cute restaurant. It was not that big, it had the window opening along the front so you can look out and have that fresh air. It was a little too dark for me. The only lighting we got was from outside. The staff was really nice. I ordered the gyoza as an appetizer and the crazy dragon roll, which consisted of spicy tuna inside with eel masago avocado on top. Both were good, I really liked that the roll had a lot going on in it and lots of flavor. I looked like a chipmunk eating haha.

Yelp
Update: it's dreadful. You know I'm a value guy, and I had to force down the sashimi the other night until I just couldn't do it anymore. Mysteriously salty and definitely not fresh.
google avatar

Mariam M.

Yelp
Cute restaurant (clean, nice decor), friendly staff (not rude or overbearing), and huge menu with lots of selection. It's great for lunch specials as far as I could tell (e.g. lunch box, 2 rolls for a price). However, I could say I've had better sushi from school campus to be honest and this isn't to be cocky. I ordered the spicy tuna and spicy salmon...it didn't taste really good and it fell apart really easy. It was wayy too mushy. Wasn't a fan of the miso soup; the salad was good though. I wouldn't come back; I only came because my friends chose this place.

Yelp
meh. It is the only game in town (as far as Columbia Medical Campus is concerned) but I'm not terribly impressed with either the sushi nor their prices. Maybe I'm spoiled, but in San Francisco, this place wouldn't stay open very long.

Yelp
big. effing. fan. first of all, i kind of love washington heights? who would have thought!? after a lovely day at the cloisters, meeting up with my dear friend in her hood was icing on the cake. first we got $4 margaritas and a complimentary shot at the mexican place right next door. hiya! then we came in, they gave us warm hand cloths and i was done. who does that anymore? it was great. big. effing. fan. we got a brooklyn bridge which was DELICIOUS and a massive spicy tuna handroll. i died. we called one of the sashimi pieces butter fish because it was literally so amazing it melted in your mouth like butter. the food was so fresh and delicious, the service was totally on point, and everything was just amazing. minus one star for the creepy videos of fish getting killed and fighting walruses on the tv......

Yelp
Sushi Yu is a consistantly great sushi place to go to. I'm eating in their restaurant for the past five years and never had a negative experience, the staff is friendly, the restaurant is neat and clean and the sushi is always consistantly fresh. prices, compared to midtown are very decent. Every friend I took to this place loved it and comes back.
