Sushi Yuen

I’ve been wanting to try Sushi Yuen for a couple years now, after a friend recommended it to me, but had always been a little late to get a reservation. Luckily, I found a spot on a Wednesday night at 5:30pm. I had walked past Sushi Yuen’s wooden door many times, and finally I would be able to go inside! 

The inside feels simple, yet refined and classy. There is a single intimate bar, seating about 10 people. There were 7 guests total during our seating time - many of which seemed to be regulars and know the chef, Chef Ryan. Chef Ryan was kind, friendly, and humble. He had a lot of knowledge of his ingredients and seasonality. “This fish is from here. This fish can only be eaten during this season. Winter is the best because the fish are bigger.” Listening to him was interesting, and I learned a lot about sushi. For reference we dined in September, so our menu was “summer going into fall.” My favorite bite of the night was the sawara - king mackerel, which Chef Ryan described as having properties more similar to tuna than mackerel. These properties definitely reflected in the taste of the sawara.. Rather than the salty brine we usually associate with mackerel, this fish was buttery, clean, and slightly sweet. As a tuna enthusiast, I really liked it. If I had the option to, I would’ve asked for another piece. Speaking of tuna, I also liked the chopped toro handroll with pickled radish. There was a freshness to it similar to that of negitoro that I really liked. I found the akami and the settoro, however, just decent in comparison to other tuna I’ve had at lower price points. It was my first time hearing of and having settoro. Chef Ryan describes it as having a leanness between that of akami and chuutoro. Chuutoro is one of my favorite pieces of sushi, but that night, I found myself thinking that even the chuutoro was a bit lean. I wonder if seasonality had something to do with this. Perhaps winter really is a better time to visit. In addition, there were some dishes that I didn’t particularly enjoy. The beltfish, to me, was a bit plain. I’m also not the biggest fan of textures like uni or botan ebi, which unfortunately made several appearances throughout the night. And although I enjoyed the hairy crab chawanmushi, I also did not enjoy the gelatinous texture of the hairy crab with vinegar sauce. On the other hand, the A5 Wagyu shabu shabu with matsutake mushroom and shellfish broth was delicious. The beef was excellent quality and melted in your mouth. Dessert was also impeccable. I believe the Crown Honeydew Melon is something of a signature for the chef - you know, those super expensive Japanese melons that people always talk about. It was delicious. The flesh of the melon tasted so ripe, sweet, and juicy. The grilled mochi served alongside it was also very good. The experience is definitely pricey, but I think it’s worth it for special occasions. Chef Ryan’s hospitality was warm and his knowledge of his craft made this an enlightening experience. Overall, even though there were some dishes that were not my favorite, there were a lot of delicious courses, and I enjoyed my time at Sushi Yuen.

Came here for lunch a few times before the price more than doubled since the Michelin mention. Good food, good presentation, no reservations for lunch so we had to line up 30+ minutes before it opens. There are 2 seating for lunch.

I wish this place was better. I would actually take half a star off if I could. While ingredients are good. The balance of flavors is off. Tried to play too much into the salty umami side of Japanese cuisine and overshadowed the natural flavors of the ingredients. The showmanship while effort was given it was not executed well. Yes I understand you want to show that the ingredients are fresh and came from a particular area, but when the box is wet and dirty you should not have it in front of your customers on the cutting board. Just simply have the ingredient in a prep container and the customer can see it while you work. There is also no need to show that each and every ingredient came from Japan. I think your customers will understand if you just tell them or simply have a menu for the service that annotates as much. Also please check your tableware down to your coasters. Which at one point was quite beautiful until through use and spillage got dirty to the point you could not have it clean anymore. Please just replace it or find a substitute. Remember that this is sushi. The star of the show is the rice. If I misunderstood the concept I would be happy to remove this review.

AMAZING! One of the best meals we’ve ever had! Taste-wise on par with several Michelin restaurants we visited in Japan earlier this year. Great flavored dishes with Uni, Crab, caviar, etc. Excellent nigiri flavors, only gotten through clearly special preparation of the fresh fish. The finishing course lately has been a wagyu steak plate. They also have a small but great sake selection as well. In fact, our dining experience was so great, we went back again a couple weeks later despite it being an hour+ drive for us, and it was well worth the trip. Chef Ryan and his team are very talented and welcoming (they even remembered some of our dietary preferences from the previous visit). Can’t wait to go back!

The food is overall salty for the price, and I know that basically omakase is made right in front of you, but here it seems to be made in advance and they just set it up, and the chef is Korean. I've been to many places, but the $70 corkage fee seems a bit expensive, and it seems too expensive for the quality. I wish they would reduce the quantity and improve the quality.

A feast to the eyes and for the palate. However, the whole omakase felt a bit rushed because there was a train of people standing behind us waiting to be seated for the next appointed timeslots. Also, they said it's 10 sushi but it's really like 7 because there's an appetizer that was more like a small plate of Hawaiian poke, a miso soup side dish and a green tea ice cream dessert at the end. Other than that, good experience though.

Made a reservation online and got there 10 min before we started. You’ll be waiting outside till they call your name/party. You’ll then be guided to your seats. Water/tea is served to you and you’ll be waiting about 15 min for the experience to begin. I wasn’t sure how many courses as it was my birthday gift. Since it was my birthday, I did get a complimentary cheesecake in the very end with a birthday song. Food: it was a very nice experience. They say what you’re eating before serving it to you. Uni, crab, wagyu, tuna, fruits, theyll explain and show you where it’s from! It’s very interesting to know where my food is coming from. They were all delicious! 10/10 for all! Chefs: they were very nice and we interacted by talking a bit about personal life as well as the food that were being served to us. Price: it’s high but I’d recommend to try once. 2 people = $600+ (including tip) Parking: very easy! It’s in a plaza so you’ll be fine!

My husband and I have eaten at quite a few Michelin star restaurants in CA. It is very weighted when I say that Sushi Yuen is our favorite restaurant without a Michelin star. Chef Ryan definitely deserves a Michelin star and I honestly don't know why he has not acquired one yet (although it works in my favor because not everyone knows about this gem). From service to ingredient selection and taste/smell/presentation of each course, they are impeccably balanced and detailed. We have dined here every 2-3 months for more than a year. We bring all our family, friends and clients here and they are all wowed each time. Chef Ryan's dining menu flows smoothly from start to finish, each course being delicately balanced and never overpowering in one flavor or another. His menu changes with the season and we have NEVER been disappointed in any dish he has served. Hands down, the best. Photos attached are of the current winter menu (Dec 2023).

Hands down, arguably the best sushi experience in SGV and personally the best I've ever been to in my entire life. Granted I have yet to go to a Michelin star omakase but nothing beats the value, ambiance, service and quality of food combined here. Know before you go: + I went for lunch on a weekday. Note that as of June 2024, there are no walk-ins, only reservations allowed even for lunch. Easily reserve via Tock website. They only have one timeslot for lunch, takes up the full 2 hours from 12 to 2pm. + Make reservations early because there are only 12 seats per timeslot. We got very lucky in being able to snag one off Tock same day but I doubt that's usually easily the case. + Easy free parking in a giant shared lot. Highlights: + Small intimate setting really helped bring out the top notch service that was 100% on top of things. Your cup of water or tea would never be empty and even a speck of leftover rice on the table or plate would be quickly wiped away. Chefs are very friendly and willing to have a conversation. + This is wild to say but one of the two unique surprises for me was the tomato from Mt. Fuji paired with the salmon. Tomato was the most refreshing, well balanced tomato I've ever had. Also the horse mackerel was very soft and not overly salty at all. It actually left a very memorable spot for me and my boyfriend since we've tried many of the other fishes before. + The noodles towards the end of the meal were very interesting. It's not a huge cup (thankfully since we're closed to stuffed) but the flavor is very umami with the shrimp and seaweed broth. 100% worth the experience. Do it.

I was extremely impressed with the omakase at Sushi Yuen. The chef is so sweet, talented, and knowledgable. He flies to Japan often to bring back the best quality fish, dishware, and nori. You can tell he's passionate about what he does. It's a very intimate setting and there were only 4 of us in the room. He explained each dish in detail and shared a few stories about his trips to Japan. This was definitely one of my favorite omakase experiences in LA. It is on the pricier side ($275 for 21 courses) but worth a visit if you want to splurge a little to treat yourself or celebrate!

I don't even know where to start. My babe brought me here for my birthday 6/29/2023. I didn't even expect it to be that amazing but I was so wrong. First of all the restaurant feels like an exclusive club. Almost like, you need to know someone to get a seat at the sushi bar. They only offer seating at the sushi bar, omakase style. They also serve dishes on Hermes and Dior dinnerware. My mind was blown . I can't afford to come back here but I appreciate my man so much for bringing me here and introducing me to the finer things in life. He's so awesome! Shout out to the Master Sushi Chefs!! I f l y j p k.

Excellent. From the quality and uniqueness of seasonal ingredients, to the beautifully presented courses, to the personable and attentive service, to the beautiful place settings, this was one of my favorite omakase experiences. I'd say it's well priced for what is offered and there is a nice balance of sushi and non-sushi courses. Our party of 4 left adequately full in the end. I would absolutely return. I'm surprised this place is not more popular by now (I almost don't want to make this review... want to keep this place a hidden gem!)

When you're offered the chance to buy-out an omakase style restaurant for a birthday, you jump at the opportunity no questions asked. Having recently been added to the Michelin guide, we wanted to see if it lived up to the billing. There's a certain level of snootiness when it comes to Sushi Yuen that is meant in the most complimentary manner. From his $6.00 a sheet seaweed to the $150 premium musk melon, auction only uni, and don't forget the $300 binchotan he uses to smoke the fish, everything here is about the decadence and absurdity of Made in Japan. Most dishes are thoughtfully planned out with the utmost care in presentation and taste. Their staff is a little inexperienced with wine service as they mainly serve sake, but they were on top of the pours. We brought some heavy hitters for the evenings, 2017 disgorged Jaques Selosse Rose, 2009 Cristal Magnum, 2010 Bernard Boisson-Vadot Meursault Les Chevalières, 2012 PYCM Meursault Charmes, and Daishichi Junmai Daiginjo Myoka Rangyoku Omega so kudos to the staff for allowing us to uncork that many bottles. Is it the best omakase in LA?...probably not but Chef Ryan is such a personable guy and the quality of his ingredients are unmatched. I would highly recommend giving the dinner a try, you won't leave hungry that's a guarantee.

Sushi Yuen lunch Omakase is now $90, but still worth the value imho. The entire lunch set consisted of 13 dishes (this includes one miso soup and one dessert at the end) and was served over a course of an hour and half. Lunch omakase consisted of two seating, 11:30am and 1pm. Each dish were exquisite, every bite was full of fresh ingredient and balanced, multi- layered taste. The only item that didn't blow my mind was the scallop, maybe it's not quite scallop season? But still good regardless. The service was attentive, our hot teas were filled often and... that's really it. I can't remember if we needed anything from the server during the courses as everything was well planned out by them. The restaurant itself is located in the four season plaza, ample parking and good stores to walk around when waiting. Restaurant interior is nice, quiet, but nothing too unique. I am a bit sad they blocked off the fake cherry tree. Thought that was kinda pretty.

FANTASTIC 1st time!! Getting a seat : we did not make lunch reservations so we were in line at 10:50am. We were 2nd in line and luckily got a seat. My recommendation is to go early...occasionally one person will wait in line for a group of friends. Then you may be out of luck. They will start accepting reservations which will be time saving (check out photos) Food and service: AMAZING!! You sit at the sushi bar cause it's the only seating available. You can see the sushi chefs preparing the different courses that you will be having. It's so meticulous and the attention to detail for each dish is astonishing. They will either place the sushi in the plate in front of your seat or hand you the sushi wrapped course. Each time you get a new course....they will tell you what type of fish and the recommended way of eating it (one bite, eat with crackers,etc). The service was great too. The wait staff would clear empty dishes, fill your water cup, etc without being asked. We ordered cold sake (they don't offer hot sake). They let us choose which sake pitcher we wanted to use and everyone got to pick their own glass sake cups. That was cool!! If you are a sushi lover, Sushi Yuen is a must try.

My boyfriend took me to the best 22 course omakase experience I've ever had in my life last night for my birthday. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted amazing including the ambiance and decore. Head Chef Ryan and his wonderful team were awesome at letting us know where each ingredient was sourced from (only sourcing wild caught fish from Japan), what was good for the season, and how best to eat each bite. Each bite just got better with the next. Our favorites were the chutoro, otoro, and the uni. I loved the hairy crab chawanmushi and the wagyu melted in our mouths. Please watch my video and look at my pictures...you will see why I can't wait to go back for the next season!

LOVED this spot. We had a dinner reservation for 5:30pm and everything was perfect! Seating is very limited, only about 10 is able to dine at a time. It was my 2nd time there, and I enjoyed it as much as the first! Since the menu is seasonal, I was able to experience different items this time around, and had no complaints. Inside, the ambiance was quiet and intimate. Every dish came out carefully plated and the chef was able to tell us about the plate's main ingredient. All the fish were fresh and it was so fun seeing the chefs prepare everything behind the counter. I really want to come back for their lunch menu.

haven't had omakase in so long i forgot how much of a delightful experience it is!! there is nothing negative to say -- the attention to detail: from the plating decor, wiping down/ cleaning the area, explanation of food origins, and treatment of service 10/10 sushi yuen also opened on the dot. the fish and seafood quality is lichrally insane almost every bite melted into my tongue... the uni was creamy and not fishy at all... the charcoal actually comes out for that smoky aroma and taste... the wasabi is not pungent yet perfectly gives that kick, pairing well with everything. i could go on and on and dissect the flavors of each course (16 in total) and explain my ratatouille moments :-) yes this lunch set was definitely on the pricier side but i think everyone should try at least once! truly felt like i traveled to japan and consumed the healthiest fish and gained omega 3 powers. shoutout habibi for my bday :3

Me and my husband walked in for lunch at 1pm on a weekday, there was only another couple and us. So the experience lasted about an hour only. The sushi are fresh and bomb. I think total are about 12 or 13 courses including dessert. Personally I'm big fan of Uni. You can tell the chef if you want more or less wasabi. My husband likes more and I would love to have less. Overall we were happy about the experience and the price. I believe in May they will start to take reservation for lunch.

Came here for my birthday in late 2022 and just now getting to the review. Still, one year later this place is still one of my favorite omakases iv ever had. Every dish flowed perfectly into each other. The ambience was small but upscale and comforting. It was fun being able to see all the chefs preparing the dishes in front of us as well. Make sure to keep the noise level to a medium or lower though as the people next to us were being told to politely quiet down for being too loud. If that's the vibe you're looking for though probably pick somewhere else. Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Ambience: 9/10

Came here to try their lunch omakase. We arrived a little before 11 AM to line up for their first seating set at 11:30 AM. Their next lunch was at 1 PM. There's a ton of parking in this plaza too and also Tesla charging stations. Reservations can only be made for dinner but lunch was a more affordable option for omakase for less than $100. Overall, it was a great experience and they also allowed for substitutions when I inquired about switching my scallop option to something else. The only other piece I didn't like was the amaebi which wasn't as fresh as I've had from other places. I would definitely recommend this for a nice intro to omakase and will try their dinner omakase in the future.

Wonderful experience with all the courses. Definitely will come back again. Recommend.

If you're looking to max out your life's peak sushi rating in North America, book a date here and send your taste buds to Japan for the evening, both figuratively and literally (since their fish and shellfish comes from the best markets and auctions in Japan). One of the best omakase place in the town !!!! Food was fresh and delicious Service was great !!!! Owner chef was the best

I never post a review but the foodie in me had to come out of the cracks to describe the culinary experience I've had. It's amazing to think this place doesn't even have a Michelin star yet but from the quality ingredients to attentiveness of the wait staff to the technique that the chefs execute is astounding. When you walk in, you're transported into a room where there's only you, the chefs and the seating group (I came at the 8pm dinner slot). I didn't know what to expect but when I left, I was already planning my next visit. The fish was delicate but executed where the cooking or marinating techniques highlighted the best part of it. All the maguro pieces just melt in your mouth and that uni was the highlight of the whole night. The smoking technique of some of the fish left a delightful aftertaste rather than a punch in your face, developing layers of flavor. In an omakase, you would think the little dishes wouldn't fill you up but I left feeling satisfied, a hunger I didn't know that needed quenching. The variety makes you appreciate each course and lets you feel like you're going on a journey to find your favorite combination of flavor. The main chef is adorable: making sure we were full enough, giving us Abe sake on the house, and and even cracking jokes with us. We came for an early celebration for my boyfriend's birthday and they through a whole celebration since 3 people in our group were celebrating birthdays. They tried to make us feel comfortable and always catered to our needs whether we needed more ginger and daikon to keeping our teas warm. All in all, this is one of my favorite omakase places so far and I plan to come back many times more.

This was one of the best omakase restaurants I've dined at and I would definitely come back again. I came here when they were still $180 pp (somewhere around there) and they are now $250 pp on weekdays and $275 on weekends for dinner. The quality of their food and all their preparation and plating is very clean, unique, and precise. All the food is prepared in front of you so you get to watch the chefs. The chefs were all super funny and friendly with everyone and they made it a great experience. The ambiance of the restaurant is very calm and relaxing, and the servers are very attentive and ready to take your plates for the next course. The windows are all blacked out from outside and inside, so you aren't able to see through and can enjoy a very private meal. Reservations are made on Tock and they have a decent availability as long as you book it in advance. There is a $120 deposit when you make the reservation and it is refunded five days after you dine with them. The bill came out to about $440 back when it was $180 pp (we didn't get alcohol) so I'm sure it's around $700+ for two people now.

Great experience. Very hospitable and attentive staff. I came for dinner 21 courses and it was amazing. The ingredients were fresh and the dishes were house made. It was a very luxurious night. For the price point I believe the ingredients could be worth it but the staff does need some more training. I did notice because some were less experienced the timing of dishes were sporadic and temperatures were not perfectly on point and it was noticeable for the lines to be rushed or slack picked up by other team members.

Omakase Menu. Truth be told, there was sake, so I wasn't paying attention to everything that they were serving, but since their menu is constantly changing, there isn't a way for you to request. Definitely plan on returning to see what else they have in store. P.S. I can't eat my sushi without fresh wasabi, so make sure you ask for that because they don't provide it at all. Just a little tip to those who pays attention.

Considering all the factors this place has to offer, Sushi Yuen is one of the best high-end, Sushi Omakase locations in Southern California. Lunch Omakase is just under $100 for a 13-piece meal with dessert. Parking: There is plenty of parking in this plaza, and if there isn't any on top, there is underground parking. I recommend parking underground, during the Summer, to avoid the heat. There are two time slots for the lunch omakase. 11:30am & 1:00pm. I highly suggest arriving 15-30 minutes before the time you want to eat. There will almost always be a line to eat their affordable lunch menu. Get there early to secure your spot! When you walk through the doors, it feels like it transports you to an authentic Japanese Sushi Restaurant. It is very clean and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. And immediately, you can see the chefs beginning to prepare the course you are about to eat. The service is very kind and patient. And assisted us with anything we needed. And they cleared away the plates that we finished. The quality of sushi is SUPERB. You cannot find a better deal for an Omakase meal. Every piece had its unique flavor. And every piece melted into my mouth. SUPER BUTTERY!! Only downside is, I was still hungry for more after the end of the course. I highly recommend everyone to come and try this place out. Simply the best sushi I have tasted.

Intimate, delicious and, high-quality 13piece & 1 dessert $90 lunch omakase!! I've had this place bookmarked for a while and finally had the chance to try their lunch omakase. They have 2 dining times for lunch: 11:30AM and 1:00PM. For reference, I got there on a Wednesday around 11:20AM but they didn't have enough seats for my party of 3, so I opted for 1:00PM with guaranteed seating. There were 7 of us for the 1:00PM time with about 5-7 seats free - so it was a pretty chill experience! Lunch omakase included: Ankimo (monkfish liver) tart Amberjack (yellowtail family) Red snapper Snow crab w/uni Blue fin tuna Shima aji (yellowtail family) -striped jack Mackerel seared with Japanese charcoal Ootoro Hokkaido sweet shrimp Torotaku w/negi Hokkaido scallop (never frozen, always fresh) Hokkaido uni with ikura Miso soup w/clams Matcha ice cream with red bean paste Loved the ambiance and the decor. There is also a waiting room in the back of the restaurant where the bathrooms are also located. The bathrooms are pristine and also have a high-tech bidet! Overall, this was a great meal and I would love to try their dinner menu which is more of a Kaiseki experience, according to the sushi chef!

Signing up for the dinner omakase feels like having a personal chef treat you to the food in Japan's version of Heaven. Ingredients are practically harvested and prepared right before your eyes. The food presentation, restaurant ambiance, and the service from the chefs and servers are on a whole other level. We arrived 30 minutes before opening, and the chefs were already busy prepping. Once inside, all customers sit around a bar-like table and get introduced to the chefs and waitstaff. The doors lock after all customers enter, ensuring an undisturbed meal. We opted for the 5:30 PM dinner, which lasted until around 7-8 PM when we received the bill. The 19-course meal costs about $250 per person. (You will be full after this, so no need to eat before or after, thinking one piece of sashimi won't fill you up.) The chefs take great pride in their craftsmanship, and you can sense their love for what they do. The waitstaff is diligent, courteous, and professional. So much so, that your cup is never empty because they're quick to serve you before you even think about a refill. Every dish is served on fancy plating with the highest quality ingredients. You probably can't find these ingredients at a regular grocery store, and some fish are even imported from Japan. Yes, the dinner omakase is pricey, but it's an experience unlike any other. I've had dinner omakase in Kyoto, Japan and while the fish quality was equal, the ambiance and service here were incomparable. This place deserves its recognition and Michelin status. Summary: - COSTS. $250 per person for the dinner Omakase. Pricey, but very worth the experience. You'll need to experience this at least once in your life. - CLEANLINESS. Everything was so clean, that I felt like I was the dirty item in that restaurant. - CUSTOMER SERVICE. So good that you don't even have to ask for anything because they would have already served you what you needed before you even thought you needed it. - PARKING. The place is located within a large parking plaza shared with other businesses. There is also underground parking, but we had no issue finding any parking spaces. - BATHROOMS. The toilet is super fancy. It lifts up automatically and comes with a heated seat and bidet. Even the soap is super fancy. - QUALITY. You can't even find this type of quality in America, so I can't say if you'll even know what to compare it with. Even if you've had sashimi before, I can say, you've never had this type of sashimi before. The best quality food you will ever eat. Every other sashimi place I go to now makes me sad that it does not have the same quality ingredients.

This place really has a special place in my.. belly (haha). This is our third visit to Sushi Yuen after a bit of hiatus (we have been busy), but still the third visit in less than a year! Our last visit was back in November with friends, and it was nice seeing that Chef Ryan (yay, I finally learned his name) had made some seasonal changes that were a nice change of pace from our previous omakase (don't get me wrong, ALL the omakase has been enjoyable here, but there were a lot of different items we hadn't had before). From the chefs to the servers, they are always the most calm, collected, and courteous folks to be around. We came mid week for dinner this time (only two parties of two were booked) and were able to have a more relaxed pace with the chefs since they were not fully seated for our early dinner (they now only seat 12 at a time, max). We got to talk to Chef Ryan more about the food and learn more about Sushi Yuen. We especially enjoy the fresh fish and ingredients (especially the uni!), the in house-made soy sauce, fresh horseradish grated throughout the courses, in house pickled ginger (yum, and I don't normally like ginger).. and just, everything. As an added perk, the chawanmushi was served in an Hermes bowl and lid, and the desserts have always been served on Christian Dior plates. Chef Ryan mentioned he had some LV cups on order that should be in soon! There is an added note that they did have to increase prices due to higher costs for ingredients, for us it was an increase from $220 to $250 which is not a substantial increase for the quality, and on the night we came, it was a 20 course omakase. Chef Ryan told us we should check out the recently renovated bathroom (complete with Japanese toilet with heated seat and bidet!!) -- it did make me laugh when I entered the bathroom, the lid of the toilet seat automatically opens for you and then "cleans" the toilet after it autoflushes for you. They will soon be renovating the hallway to the bathroom, it is nice to see an establishment that already keeps a nice and neat appearance, doing more to elevate the place. We will definitely be back again soon!

Omakase is extremely delicious. The ingredients are fresh and very high quality. It's like eating in Japan. Very good service staff, clean shop 10/10

Dinner omakase here at Sushi Yuen is a complete different experience than lunch omakase- the ambiance was intimate & delightful as the chef patiently and happily explains every ingredients, sakes and even dinnerwares in details. The chef mentioned his technique of incorporating a bit of kaiseki and a bit of edomae into planning omakase courses and we thought it all worked out harmoniously. The 19-course dinner omakase covered almost everything you can think of for an excellent omakase. Everything from Kaluga caviar to white truffles and bms 9 Japanese A5 wagyu to seshimo (or was it harashimo) and to perfectly end the meal Japanese white strawberries and musk melons (?) rest assured we left sushi yuen happy & satisfied. All ingredients prepared in the omakase were outstanding with a touch of chef's flare to each of the course. All the courses were superb but I was especially fond of the mackerel with grounded sesame on top & the house made marinated barley to go with smoked A5 wagyu. In between nigiris a bowl of hot hotate noodle soup came in the right time to get us ready for the last few courses. There were so many notable courses through out and I am happy to report that Sushi Yuen has definitely earned a top spot in my heart! Thank you to the chef & staffs for such a wonderful omakase!

Sushi Yuen is another great discovery. It has a pretty big sushi bar that hold around 14 guests, so it'll take an exceptional teamwork to serve everyone at the same time and Sushi Yuen does it without any flaws. The entire night omakase is incredible. Chef Ryan and his team had this creative preparations which really impressed me, similar to what you would see at a high end restaurant chef's table. Every dish was nicely plated in fancy tableware, drinks served in traditional glassware, all done in a timely manner. They had this smoke wagyu dish that was tasty and amazing. There are also a few seaweed wrap that gives me a mouthful of creamy Japanese Uni and Toro, definitely one of the best experience I had. Most courses in the omakase are seafood, so best to bring or order sake and white wine to enhance the dining experience.

THIS PLACE DESERVES A MICHELIN STAR!! This is the perfect place to come to celebrate - the service, staff, and food are all 10/10! This omakase experience is well worth the money. Every dish is expertly curated and crafted and you walk away feeling extremely full and in awe of the meal placed before you The menu changes with the season and some of the highlights from this past meal include all of the fresh sushi, wagyu and the "perfect" melon and strawberry in the dessert! Definitely recommend coming here - I'm consistently blown away by the meal whenever I go!

Very late review 4/18/23 Wowee...WONDERFUL Omakase lunch! Chef's counter seating only. Opens at 11:30am so went early since there are no reservations at lunch. Oh my gosh. No words to express how excellent everything was. I'm estimating, 12? 14? people per seating. Each seating is 1-1/2 hrs. $70 for lunch Omakase. 12 courses. Started with Ankimo- monk fish liver. Just a few bites. I love ankimo. Creamy, not gamey, served with a tart yuzu infused sauce. Just delicious. 2) Red snapper lightly dressed with shoyu. Fresh & yummy. 3) Snow crab topped with uni & black truffle shavings. WHAT?!? Are you kidding? Yes. it was. 4) ahi tuna marinated briefly in shoyu. A winner. 5) Mackerel lightly dressed with shoyu. While I don't usually care for sashimi mackerel, this one was yummy. 6) Shiro uni (?) aged 11 days. Can you age fish? Apparently so! This was really tasty. 7) Amaebi with ebi miso - sooo good. Fresh, sweet, just divine. 8) Minced tuna, takuan-(pickled daikon), & green onion mini bite. Kind of crazy, but it works! 9) Hotate (scallop) from Hokkaido. Oh man...I love scallops. 10) Nemuro Hokkaido uni & ikkura- delicious, creamy, with pops of saline from ikura. The Hokkaido uni usually on the dinner menu. We were fortunate enough to have this at lunch 11) Extra added items- Anago hand roll. Nice small little bite. Not fishy, not overly seasoned with sauce. Perfect little bite. 12) Ehime seared tai. Tai is usually the happy new year fish. This was sashimi. Real nice contrast with the sear. 13) Hokkaido murasaki uni-very special uni. Totally worth it. 14) Shiro ebi (baby white shrimp) tender and sweet 15) Green tea ice cream with anko (red bean) 11-14 were extra items we wanted to try. Not included in the original Omakase. Multiple sushi chefs working as a team to provide the counter patrons a great Omakase experience. Will definitely come again! Another set of diners came in at 1:30pm. Glad we arrived for the first seating. We were the only first timers amoung those to the left & right of us. It's no wonder Yuen has repeat customers. The fish is flow in from Japan. The chef also has a connection with a sake purveyor. So special sakes are served here. See photos as the sake was served in beautiful Satsuma (?) vessel. All the dining accoutrements were beautiful fine Japanese ceramic pieces. A true star dining experience.

我來過三次 lunch 還有一次 dinner，每次都是 omakase. 第一次 dinner omakase 是差不多 2月 2020 年. 那時後還有不同 tier 的 omakase 可選，而且滿便宜的，好像 $40. 如今就光是 lunch omakase 就已經 $90. 的確是好吃但價錢一直漲. 除了給孩子請，我都不好意思讓朋友請，也自己覺得這家的員工和老闆都每那麼 friendly.

We came here on Friday night for celebrating Birthday. Great Omakase experience! We ordered the Premium Omakase: $230/each person around 16 courses. Chefs introduces each course's food and the origin of the ingredient. I love their dinnerware which are very beautiful and elegant, some of them marked with Christian Dior, Hermès etc. The way they display each dish is very artistic. The food quality is excellent. i'm addicted to thier dishes now. The restuarant has very clean and elegant design with limited seats around 16. The service is excellent! Chefs are friendly and fun. I feel Sushi yuen is good for special occasions since it's a little bit pricey. We will definitely visit again.

Came here for dinner on a Friday night to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. Once you walk in, you're seated right in front of the chefs while you watch them in their element. There's only one sushi bar with 13 seats available. I booked reservations 3-4 weeks in advance and didn't have any issues. We got seated a little after 8pm and our dinner didn't end until 10:15pm or so. It was an amazing experience. The quality food, the level of detail the chefs put into their art, everything was beyond what I expected. My favorite dishes we got to try was the A5 wagyu, grade 3 uni, eel, and otoro. The fish is imported directly from Japan and you can just taste the difference. We probably had 15 or so dishes and ended with a dessert plate that had a melon worth $100!! I've had omakase before, but I've never had an experience quite like this one. Was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth if? Absolutely. Not only are you paying for the food, but you're paying for a 2.5hr presentation. It was great and I'd do it again! Thank you Sushi Yuen for a memorable evening.

I have had lunch here twice in the past six months. The food, atmosphere, and price are all great. The chef is very attentive in introducing the source of the ingredients. The ingredients will change according to the season.

My little sister treated my mom and me to this joint twice. Once for lunch which you cannot make reservations before so you had to wait at door around 11am. They have lunch reservations lately through app. The food was good. We got to try the dinner omakase a few months ago. It was around $280 each person before drinks and taxes and tips. I think there was over 20 items. It was a feast but definitely expensive. I like Ootoro more for the price.

Melt. In. Your. Mouth. Such a great omakase in a very unsuspecting plaza! Fish was very fresh and the chef is generous with his portions. Parking is nice and easy. The restaurant is quite small and intimate so you get a lot of face time with the team. I loved the Christian Dior dessert plate, and the chef was very proud to display it! So cute!

Amazing lunch experience! Very nice, efficient setup inside for omakase. It's a small intimate restaurant that seats only 15 guests. We got to sit in the middle and chat with a chef Ryan! Every piece of sushi we had was delicious! My favorites were the truffle crab, scallop, and all the tunas. Everything was made perfectly to order. From the freshly grated wasabi, house made ginger, and house cured fish roe everything was so thoughtful and delicious. One of the best omakase experiences I've had! Will definitely be back for another lunch and dinner! Hesitant to recommend because it will get more crowded, but highly recommend!

All I can say is ... wow! The omakase here overly exceeded my expectations. This is easily one of the best omakase I've ever had, both in the presentation and the taste. The chefs here are super friendly as well. I usually don't really get full from omakase, but I was pretty filled and happy with this one. This was also my first time trying Japanese melon and learned that they are quite expensive! Sushi Yuen is definitely on my return list.

Deserves all the stars it has and more. Phenomenal place for the quality of food, service, and overall environment. All the little touches added up to something quite amazing. A must for special occasions, such as our 4 year anniversary:) Everything was fantastic, but if I had to pick a personal fav it would be the truffle chawanmushi with the Hokkaido scallop. After eating this, I was truly sad the scallop was gone. I felt as though I was born from the womb of a scallop (if they even have wombs) my entire mouth was just enveloped in the sweetness of said scallop and this is probably almost the same feeling as trying ayuahuasca. Wasabi One half point off because I don't like wasabi, and all the fish was brushed with their soy wasabi sauce. It was a minor taste, but still doesn't change the fact that im not a fan of wasabi lol the fish quality was still off the chain. If you want to take your taste buds on a trip without barfing for a week straight (like ayahuasca) then def come here. Dessert was great. They also added apricot glazed cheesecake (anni gift) alongside the sublime golden kiwi panna cotta, black sesame ice cream, and juicy crown melon. Service was always attentive and my tea cup was constantly full! My stomach was also full I couldn't finish dessert

I have been wanting to go to Sushi Yuen for over a year and finally got the opportunity to go with my boyfriend and friends for my birthday!!! One of the best gift and dinner ever. I enjoyed every single dish that was served to me from the appetizers, the fresh sushi and dessert. It was about 17 courses total but I think I lost count after 7 lol. This was my first omakase experience and it is definitely worth the price. We went around Saturday evening and it was about $260 per person. I love the handiwork and technique used to make the experience and taste wonderful. Service was really refined. The servers was attentive in clearing the dishes as we finished. It was about a 2.5 hours experience but well worth it. You definitely get full after 7th course. It is a small and intimate restaurant with few seatings. You get to interact and talk with chef as they showcase/prepare each food. Love how they talk to each of us and tell us where each ingredient is coming from. My love for sushi and dream to have my first omakase have been fulfilled!!! This definitely opened my palette to try new things. I really appreciate it.

Great experience at dinner. If you are going, you probably don't need a review to convince you one way or another. Some of my random thoughts: Best Bite: Negitoro topped with uni wrapped in Korean Gamtae Seaweed - Negitoro and the uni were fantastic but the part that made it memorable was the choice to use Korean Gamtae which I do not remember having as an adult. It was a soft, pliable texture that contrasted with the expected crispness of Japanese nori. The uni was great throughout all the courses it was used in. Underrated Dish: Teuchi Soba - I have never really put much thought into soba nor have a sought it out in its ideal form but having it so well executed was a delight. Soba done exceptionally well will something I will be more mindful of in the future. Underwhelming Offering: Super Fancy Japanese Super Melon - I have not gotten around to tasting the ridiculously (over)priced melons from Japan and it was nice that was offered as the dessert for dinner. I am happy was able to experience it but definitely was not worthwhile from my perspective even through the lens of fine dining. It was ultra juicy but was not some sort of Nirvana-inducing experience. Will not be seeking this out next time I am in Japan. Seating and Service: Two dinner sittings of 12 dinners and almost 1:1 ratio of staff to patrons - Very intimate setting, though the people you sit with you can make or break your evening, overall fantastic. Service was very attentive and the chefs were very focused on their duties. Price: All in for the Summer dinner menu, no drinks, tax and tip came out to be around $750 for two people. The shop is definitely ambitious and aiming for some stars and the Michelin tax is already priced in. I think this experience is on par with lots of higher end Sushi offerings in SoCal but I was happy that I did not having to drive to LA, battle through traffic, or pay for parking. Sort of evens out that way. Will definitely try this place out for lunch when I get a chance and I will keep this in mind as a part of my omakase rotation when I do not feel like driving deep into the heart of LA.

The price keeps going up. I started coming when they had $33 dinner sets. Now lunch is about $100. Worst part is that there is no definite price for dinner. That is a bit scary because it can be $300/person without any drinks and absolutely makes a difference for our party of 4. I got in line for lunch before they opened but 1 of our friends did not arrive yet and we had a party of 3. They were not willing to seat us & said they would give our seats to the next people in line. There was some kind of slow up on Gale (the street this joint is located) so our friend was 10 minutes late). We ended up going to Ootoro in Walnut, which taste better imo but smaller pieces. :/

Came here on a Wednesday at 8pm and had my mind and palette BLOWN! If I could give 100 stars, I would! Service: 1000/5 All the servers and sushi chefs were so attentive; the attention to detail was amazing. One of the other people was left-handed, and the main chef noticed it immediately, and all the nigiri presented to him afterwards, accordingly so he could grab it with his left hand. Food: 20000/5 I have never had such high-quality/top grade seafood before. I was not a uni fan until I came here. All other uni I've tried has never been good and always had some sort of taste to it. The uni we had was AAA grade hokkaido uni, and let me tell you, it converted me as an uni lover! It's the only kind I can eat now! Presentation: 1000/5 Ive never been served food on luxury brand dishes before but what a delight and a beauty! The chef/owner took the time to hand pick all the dishes used and carefully planned it out to be served with specific items and decor. Other noteworthy things: - they only seat 12 people so while its intimate, the space is big enough that you don't feel cramped. - one of the nicest bathrooms I've ever been in, it has a bidet and soap from Le Labo! TL;DR- a bit expensive but worth it imo for the service, presentation, quality, flavor and overall experience.

My boyfriend surprised me with dinner here for my birthday last weekend and it was an amazing, mind-blowing experience. All the pieces of seafood were fresh, succulent, and packed with flavors--all while still tasting clean and light. I'm having a difficult time picking favorites because everything was delicious and special in its own way, but I'd say top 3 for me would have to be: 1) chutoro , 2) sweet shrimp , 3) hairy crab topped with uni and caviar. You need to book a reservation for dinner. Being around $220/person, this place was definitely a splurge, but it was worth the money because we got to try many high-end ingredients along with the delicious, fresh cuts of meats. Examples of such being Italian black and white truffle, caviar, certified A5 wagyu from the Miyazaki prefecture, and the $100 crown melon from Japan. The wagyu tasted unreal--I've never had a piece of meat that melted in my mouth as quickly and easily as that! It was smoky, tender, and overall a dream for meat lovers. We were very lucky to enjoy the last melon of the season, and it was so incredibly sweet, juicy, and soft. Honestly, it was sweeter than the other two desserts given! The place was really easy to locate on the outside and the interior was actually quite spacious. The bar was long and seats people on all three sides, allowing everyone to see each other as well as the chefs putting everything together. Service was very attentive and pleasant. When you come in, they ask if you would like water or hot tea, and throughout the course of the meal, they would constantly check and refill your drink of choice; you'd never need to ask. As soon as you are finished with that particular dish, someone would come and take the plate(s) away, and soon after, another would be served. Overall, would recommend for special occasions for sure! I want to come back and try the $70 omakase lunch one day (:

Their $70 omakase lunch is such a great deal! Very limited seating (about 16 seats) and for lunch they only accept walk ins. We arrived by 11:10AM on a weekday and was already the 10th/11th person in line. This is within my top 3 meals of 2022. Everything is so fresh, highest level of ingredients were used, and perfectly executed by the 3 chefs. Also I never had to ask for a tea refill, the waiter always ensure it's filled up. That's top notch service right there. Planning to go back to try their dinner menu!

Always saw long lines at this place, finally had the opportunity to try it! Barely made it for lunch as this restaurant can sit up to 16 people max. Lunch is walk in only and dinner is reservation only. I recommend getting here before 11AM to secure a spot for their 11:30AM lunch. They also have another lunch round at 1:30PM. For $70 I was shocked how high quality everything was AND 12 courses at that. Beyond worth it and service was impeccable. My favorite was the sweet shrimp, it was a bite of perfection. I highly recommend!

Amazing dining experience! My boyfriend and I went here to celebrate his birthday and we had the best time! Everything was so so delicious and the highlight was definitely the service. From the chefs to the servers, everyone was amazing! The head chef (I believe) was super knowledgeable about his food. I appreciated that he was telling us where everything came from as he was preparing the food. The dishes were also served on these intricate dinnerware, which I really loved. According to the chef, most of the dinnerware were imported from Japan. The fishes were also top quality! My favorites were the ootoro and the sweet shrimp. I had omakase a few times before but it was nowhere as good as this! I would definitely recommend and I am planning to come back soon to try their lunch omakase!

Exquisite Dining Experience. Reservation required and all party be present to fully experience the service and food preparation. The door is open 10 minutes before reservation time and the host will seat your party to your seats. They prepare each course base on the speed of how fast you and your party eat. With that being said, it isn't a fast paced dining and expect some wait while each dish is being prepared. Each course is meant to be consumed soon after it arrives. We did weekday dinner which consist of 16 courses. The chefs introduce each dish as they are presented and tell you the origin of the ingredient. Meal was amazing. Service was fun and professional. A little bit on the pricy side but the quality makes it worth while. A place worthy for celebrating something. Would recommend trying.

Amazing Omakase! You'll think you're in the ocean! Everything is so fresh and smooth. Prices are reasonable esp for lunch (12 courses) Dinner has hairy crab (16 courses). The location is easy to find. The staff is attentive. An intimate group of people allowed for lunch and/or dinner around 13 people only, sitting around the bar so you can see everything being made. Bar seating is comfortable. Super casual. Not as cold inside as people have noted. Extremely clean, plates are beautiful! Younger crowd, I wanna say people there were around 25-37 yrs old. Only 1 couple looked like they were over the age of 45 yrs old. Photo and video friendly. Yes, you'll feel like you don't know if it's proper etiquette to eat when everyone hasn't been served yet but just eat them as soon as you can, it's recommended by the chef!

Great sushi, nice chefs and servers. Highly recommend, they used fresh fish imported from Japan + many other exotic and fresh ingredients.
