Are These London Restaurants Worth The Hype? - London - The Infatuation

"The Verdict: You should have low expectations for this naff spot that’s high in the sky. Some things are inevitable, and people in tight trousers wanting to go up to the 38th floor of the Heron Tower to eat sushi rolls topped with melted mozzarella is one of them. Unfortunately, Sushisamba is just one of those places. It’s got the views, it’s got the fusion menu, it’s got the arse-clenching prices. You shouldn’t eat lunch or dinner here. But if you want to get an overpriced drink and look across London, we can’t stop you." - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, jake missing, heidi lauth beasley

The atmosphere is great, welcoming team and place. The location is good and easy to find. I was expecting much more from the food, taking into consideration the price and the food I asked. Disappointing Wagyu was expecting much more but, unfortunately, wasn't done properly. The remaining food was great. Drinks are good, and you have many quality choices. It's overpriced, but definitely give it a go-to try and enjoy. Expect a bill between £350/£400.

Went to a Sunday Samba Brunch, the food was good but the service was terrible. We felt as if we had to beg to get any attention. Also plates were not cleared up when we had finished eating, everything felt painful. It was their first brunch so maybe they were overwhelmed. The food was good and the dancer were amazing.

Google
Food and drink weren’t just well-presented, they tasted incredible too. Service was excellent. Portions weren’t very big so it worked out quite pricey, but you are partly paying for the location because it is such a prime area.

Google
The food? Incredible, as always, every dish bursting with flavour and beautifully presented. The setting is gorgeous and modern, with just the right touch of sophistication. And the service… absolutely brilliant! The team is so friendly and attentive, they make you feel genuinely welcomed from start to finish. It’s one of those places that ticks all the boxes: amazing atmosphere, outstanding food, and first-class service. Already planning my next visit! 🍣🍸

We were celebrating my sons birthday but it was a surprise for him so we had to get there just before he and his wife arrived. We had booked the table for 12pm but the place didn't open till then, so when we got there we explained the situation but they couldn't let us in until they were officially open, insurance purposes I think, but they did everything they could to make sure we were in bang on time, which was great as my son and his wife were appropriately late. 😃😃. They even brought a little cake with a candle on at the end. Great service. A bit expensive but you expect that in London. Food was excellent and someone comes and explains all the meal options to you.

Google
Great atmosphere inside and outside, located in the heart of Covent Garden. They not only had sushi on the menu, but also various meat dish and plantain, although I would still highly recommend the sushi! The cocktails were also very tasty. Average price was £50/person with 1 alcoholic beverage. Service was fab and it’d be the best to make a reservation.

Google
Quite good! We were all impressed with both the Sushi as well as the other items offered! It was fresh and well prepared! The Saki menu is excellent and the service matched! With a vibrant atmosphere and excellent outdoor upstairs patio and downstairs patio, this spot was a great time! Try This: The Taquitos were amazing! Yes, Taquitos!

First time iv been here, was here on Saturday for frends birthday. To be honest I can't see what all the hype is about. Service was slow, no air conditioned, when asked about it was told because the windows were open it did not work, I'm shore it cost at least half a million doing up this restaurant, I would have fort you get the right design. Enyway back to the food, to me very avage especially the price you charged and nothing special, the steak was to fatty and chewy, the sushi was missing that wow factor. I did not complain as did not want to upset my friends birthday, with drinks for 4 of us it comes to around 900 pounds, 15 percent service charge what a joke, the food looks good but ant good . I can name a few places better in every way that sushi samba. Roka, and sticks and sushi are definitely better and cheaper. The only good thing I can say about this place is decor. But I came for food not decor, if I wanted decor, il go to the interior design museum. Olgun Hilmi The International chef

Yelp
Had an amazing experience, food came Out pretty fast with the sushi bar presentation in the middle, drinks were delicious. Was very happy we came. Service was ok, I feel like it could have been better. But we will see when I come back again.

Yelp
Many reviews say Sushisamba is incredible and I was really hoping to experience delicious food with excellent service. I'm not sure if it was what we picked or if it was just an off night for the restaurant but quite frankly my partner and I were disappointed. We began our night with the service heckling us to get the most expensive meals on the menu. Trying to upsell in a restaurant where the customers are paying a premium for the service and food is a bit of a shame. Eventually we were finally able to almost convince our waitress what we wanted, we each got the premium Taste of Samba. The meal started with edamame and plantain chips. Basic but that's expected; nothing shocking. No issue with it. Next we were served with crispy lobster taquitos and seaweed salad. The taquitos were one of the better meals of the night. The crispy shell was good alongside good lobster. Seaweed salad was not my cup of tea but maybe for some. Next was wagyu gyoza and toro tiradito. The gyoza were lacking a lot of flavor. So much potential yet very little seasoning and flavor. We expected the wagyu to burst with flavor but instead tasted like uncooked ground beef. The toro tiradito was significantly more flavorful with a beautiful presentation ( Most of the food, if not all was presented in a beautiful manner). We then had filet mignon, robata black cod and, aji amarillo rice. Filet mignon was by far the best thing on this menu. Cooked to perfection and had beautiful pairings of shaved truffles and pickled tomatoes. The black cod was also quite delicious yet could have been cooked a bit longer. The super wet skin was an indication that it needed more time cooking. As for the rice, no other word other than terrible. We were told it was supposed to be spicy. There was no flavor and I mean none. The rice clearly hadn't been washed prior to cooking. It was clumpy and almost pasty. Too much gluten in the water when cooking. Maybe we just got unlucky but also maybe something they need to look into as a kitchen staff. Next was the samba covent garden roll, nigiri and, negitoro roll ( Something we ordered on the side; not apart of the Taste of Samba) the covent garden roll was like a store bought sushi roll; dry and weird texture profile. Nigiri was solid; no comments other than bad rice. Maybe an off night for the rice. The negitoro roll was hard to eat. We both love sushi and exploring new foods but it was a really hard texture. Something in the middle was too hard to eat; needs to be cut into smaller slices. The last dish was the dessert. I would redo that. I'm not sure who approved that dessert but I know that this restaurant is capable of making better. Our overall experience was disappointing, from an upselling waitress who would not stop talking, to the waitress spilling soy sauce on my partner's trench coat, to a half decent and expensive meal at a very hip and swanky restaurant; I sadly would not recommend. I really wanted to rave about this place alongside everyone else but maybe this was not the right night. I would like to go again and maybe try to get the experience I was hoping for.

Yelp
Not friendly staff, we had reservations and they saw our kids and did not seat us. Haven't tried the food but can be certain that the vibe did not pass

Yelp
Walked 20 min to this restaurant because open table had slots available every 15 minutes. Upon arrival we were told they don't have anything available yet online reservations still showed availability. Terrible customer service and management!!

ayarpi m.

Yelp
My family and I are visiting from out of town and we visited this restaurant today with a party of 8, including children. Before arriving, we checked online and saw that they had multiple reservation slots available--every 15 minutes or so. But when we got there, they refused to seat us. Even more frustrating, while we stood there, we could still go online and book a table immediately--but they still said no. It felt like we were being turned away not because they were full, but because we had kids with us. It was disappointing and frankly felt discriminatory. If there was a legitimate reason, they didn't communicate it. We were polite and ready to dine--but clearly, they weren't ready to treat families with respect.

Yelp
What a surprise! We were NOT expecting this place to look like this! We arrived right when they started lunch service and we were immediately seated. The food and service is pretty good! Even though it is a chain (internationally), the quality of the food is fresh!

Yelp
We were excited by the look of the menu and the restaurant. Sadly, the cover of this book didn't match the contents. We were on the last night of a 3 week vacation and decided to have, what we though would be, a great last dining experience for the trip. The place is very reminiscent of CATCH LA, complete with the uber pretentious attitude, which I am not opposed to, but you'd better deliver. We perused the sake menu and made a bottle choice only to be told they no longer carry it. Still on the menu, but whatever. I asked for a suggestion at the same price point (€100), and he suggested 2 options in the €200 range. We decided to just have cocktails. The server was not extremely acclimated to the menu and didn't know basic cocktails (manhattan, old fashioned). We ordered the "Premium Taste of Samba" and expected something special. They asked about allergies and preferences,, we said no tomatoes and no olives. Of course, since I'm metioning that, it means they completely ignored it. Bad Pacing was ridiculously fast, and we had 3 courses on the table at once, so we requested they slow it down. They did, but I could see that the chef was not pleased (we sat right in front of his station so I could see him the entire time). He also spent a ton of time looking at stuff on his phone, which is pretty gross. Food was pretty pedestrian for the expectations. Almost nothing was special, even though it sounded like it should be. The Toro Tradito and the Rainforest dessert were exceptional. The latter was beautifully conceived and was delicious. Complete letdown was the "Premium" Nigiri, which was salmon and tuna. NOT Otoro, but just tuna. Huh? The filet wasn't a great cut of meat and was pretty tough and undercooked. AND had tomatoes on the plate. We would NOT return, but I wouldn't say to steer clear, but I suggest you just order a la carte.

Yelp
Walked by this restaurant and decided to eat here. I got a table for one pretty easily with no wait. Had to walk up stairs, but they had an elevator if you need it. Sat by the window and it had decent views. They were quick to deliver my order. Also ordered salmon nigiri (not pictured). Everything tasted really good. Paid like 60 pounds. I'm allergic to shellfish but they had a lot I could still eat.

Yelp
First time at a SUSHISAMBA. This location at Covent Garden was lovely. Gorgeous decor and a lively atmosphere. Made a reservation (same-day) to be safe. Service was a little hit or miss but did improve over time. Highlights were without a doubt the Covent Garden roll (no seaweed, perfect for sushi skeptics like me) and the Samba Salad with its incredibly good mango dressing and beautifully shredded veggies. Worth a visit, especially for these standout dishes.

Yelp
Amazing service and the ambiance is so indoor garden meets chic! I love the whole vibe. Me and my boyfriend did the afternoon tea and it was quite the experience. My first time trying caviar was a good one! Also everything we tried was fresh & delicious!

Amit B.

Yelp
The food was average to below average. The dishes were a bit stale and the spices not well balanced. All the food was over sauced and spiced. They sat us in front of a bathroom where we could see the toilet. I requested to see the manager who decided not to show up and have a conversation. On the way out I let the server know we are leaving half way through the meal but the manager didn't even have the courtesy of a conversation. Never seen anything like this before.. The absolute worse restaurant of our trip. Please be careful. Happy new year!! P.s - this would be negative stars and the manager needs to get fired.

Yelp
Upon entering off the street you are greeted by a hostess who directs you up the circular stairs. Upstairs the long restaurant is decorated with a variety of themes. The first being live plants. The service was exceptional. We had Toro tuna and Salmon sashimi. It was of good quality. We also had a roll that had melted mozzarella cheese in it. A first for me and delicious.

Yelp
Good food, great service, fun atmosphere. Went around the holidays so it was quite busy.

Ambra L.

Yelp
A magical, colorful and lively environment. Professional and friendly staff. Amazing food! Vegeterian friendly. Managers on the floor very welcoming and accomodating! My guests loved the experience as much as I did! SPOT ON!

Yelp
This place is amazing!! Amazing sushi in London. It is really nicely decorated as if you're in a rainforest and the music was perfect. We tried the chef tasting menu and it was so much food that we couldn't even finish it and had to take it togo. The drinks were also great. The service was top notch. I will definitely go back!

Yelp
If you like Sushi, you have to come here. The sushi is amazing, and I had two really good cocktails. The service is great and it's a cool atmosphere. Great spot for a date or girls night out.

Yelp
Such an interesting fusion of Japanese and Peruvian food. Sushi was fantastic. Had a hint of South America to it. Nice atmosphere as well.
google avatar

Connie L.

Yelp
Great vibe, food and service. Diverse selection of menu items to choose from. We tried a little bit of just about everything, and all were delicious Bartenders here have really mastered their craft and their drinks don't disappoint. Highly recommend.

J L.

Yelp
Really mediocre, at best. While a wonderful backdrop for an Instagram post, this restaurant is really all hype. Scenery and music are good, but sushi and other food is mediocre and very overpriced. It is situated in Covent Garden, a major tourist hub, and you certainly pay the price for their high overhead and get little than an average meal in return. Hard pass.
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best sushi I have ever had. Extremely expensive, one small roll for £20, miso soup for 7£. Pretty decorations, lots of fake plants. Great location and great service

Yelp
Brave and tasty menu. Service was top notch. I recommend you let the server pick a dish for you to try.

Yelp
Server name: Egamberdi  Drinks: - Lychee Cooler Food:  - Shrimp Tempura - Chilean Sea Bass - Samba Convent Garden Rolls - El Topi Dessert: -Chocolate Banana Cake Review: Egamberdi, the server for my table, was really helpful to recommend and to help me choose the menu for the night. It was a really pleasant night to be able to go Sushi Samba (Covent Garden branch). I did not expect the night to be very well. Usually, most of the expensive restaurants in London are terrible not gonna lie - meaning that pricey does not mean good food. Nevertheless, Sushi Samba really impressed with its fushion food even though I am the person who is really hard to impress. I do not normally give even 4 stars rating. Sushi Samba really deserves it though. For the price, I got the taste and the quality of the food and the vibe of the restaurant. This is definitely a to go place in London. If you are in London, do not hesitate to come and try this place as this is very recommended. I hope this review helps you to find the restaurant that suits you best while you are in London. I will definitely come back again in near time. Cheers! Thank you for the wonderful evening Sushi Samba Covent Garden P.S. Lovely view from the terrace though.

Yelp
The environment and the service was exceptional! It is a fusion between Japanese, Brazil, and Peru! We loved it here! The food was amazing! We decided to get the preset 3 course menu because that was the best deal for us to try what the place offers (also a drink each). Having said that, it was a bit pricy, about £44 each for all 3 of us, BUT to have food prepared for you in this elegant way and to have fresh ingredients that you can actually identify does make the cost worth it. I mean, we do eat with our eyes! So I do not have any negativity toward this place. In fact, I would 100% go again and recommend it to others! What we ate that came to our table: - Plantain chips (appetizer) - Seviche / Short Rib Gyoza (small plate) - El Topo (sushi roll) - Banana Cake w/ vanilla ice cream(dessert) My only comment is that the dessert had way too much caramel that soaked into the banana bread (I wasn't aware it came with caramel, I didn't see that on the menu, not sure if I missed that) and I felt like I could taste vanilla extract in the ice cream. Aside from this, everything tasted GREAT! Thank you so much for a great experience!

Yelp
Maybe in was the cold January weather, or the grey skies and wet weather, but stepping into the colourful SUSHISAMBA new to Covent Garden, felt like I was on holiday. My mood was uplifted as I sat down for lunch in a velvet banquet surrounded by tropical greenery. Visually I just love this place. Lots of plants to set the mood, earthy jewel tones in velvet and shiny golden accents. It is definitely trying to be tropical and exotic but not in a gimmicky way. It feels quite polished and upmarket, which lets face it will be reflected in the prices. But I have to say the place did deliver. The service was attentive and the food delicious. The menu is of the trendy South American - Asian fusion style. Some sushi, some ceviche, some tacos. I tried a bit of each and from what I ordered, the sushi plate was the strongest. Which is odd for me as tacos usually win for me hands down. That is not to say that the tacos weren't good but like most tacos served in London they are overly stuffed with the filling. This makes for very messy eating. Add to that the taco shell was crispy and broke when I bit into it, so even though the tacos were tasty it was difficult to eat and got everywhere. If you are on a date, avoid this dish for that alone. The ceviche was fine but I was more about the sushi. I ended with an outstanding banana dessert that definitely made the day brighter. As it was lunchtime I didn't have a chance to check out their cocktail menu which was disappointing so I must go back as the bar area looks like a trendy place to come with friends. But today at least, SUSHISAMBA was my sunshine on a rainy day.

Valerie L.

Yelp
From someone who doesn't love sushi, this place is amazing. Everything we ordered exceeded expectations. The place is buzzy and fun. They're also great with allergies, which was appreciated.
google avatar

Kelsey B.

Yelp
Okay so if you can navigate to the entrance (it's a bit difficult to find depending on which side of Covent Garden you come in from), then congrats you've made it to some amazingly good sushi. This new SUSHISAMBA location is a bit different - still the same creative and fun decorations but without the view from the top, so if you'd like a nice view like the original location, this one might not be the right one for you. Otherwise it's still a fabulous dining option and the chef & staff are just as incredible! We decided on the pre-theatre menu since it gives you a nice selection of the restaurant's best dishes, but don't be afraid to try out a bunch of the other types of dishes which range from sharing platters to tapas-like dishes. The gyoza and banana cake dessert were a couple of my favourites, and the sushi was out of this world good! My only critiques - the taquitos had a bit too much guacamole and the miso soup was too salty. Otherwise fantastic meal! Come here for a date night or just drinks with the girls.

Cara P.

Yelp
I had high hopes, because I have been impressed with other locations, but this one did not impress. The prices were high, with fewer choices, and the food was not good overall. This was my most expensive meal in London, and the worst one I had. The service was also slow, and they repeatedly forgot to bring out things we ordered. I would find another sushi place if you want good food and service.
google avatar

Madison S.

Yelp
This place is very cool and a great location! Really interesting and beautiful lounge area with the ceiling covered by plants. Very nice for pictures! Windows also overlooking Covent Garden. Food was a bit overpriced for what we got, but the location and atmosphere was worth it!
google avatar

Jayhea M.

Yelp
The food was amazing here! However the ambience sealed the deal for me. The view is spectacular and the service is phenomenal! Don't miss out on this spot in London!

Cori G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and wonderful food would definitely go again. Fish was really fresh!

A G.

Yelp
I found SushiSamba to be OK. The food is reliable but not many creative or original offerings. The service was as good as expected.
google avatar

Samantha A.

Yelp
I am so surprised this place does not have very many reviews! The strand is an awesome location because you get the incredible panoramic views of London! The music is excellent and makes you feel like you're in Latin America! Just think of the perfect combination of Latin spice and Japanese delightfulness, and you get SUSHISAMBA! It's an incredible fusion that is nothing but heaven to the tastebuds. I absolutely love this place and highly recommend it to everyone!! Everyone has to try this at least once! I wish we had this in San Francisco.
google avatar

Gökberk K.

Yelp
Sushisamba has a very mood lifting environment, with its vibrant decor and the nice music. While the music could have been just a tad less louder the overall experience they offer is great! I went there for my birthday. We shared a lot of the plates we ordered. I recommend to do that to everyone wanting to try the delicious food they have to offer. We picked from the taste of samba menu where you chose 2 or 3 plates from a set list. We had crispy yellowtail taquitos and el topo. Unfortunately I do not remember the names of all the food we had but I do remember that we were very pleased with every dish that we were served. The chocolate banana cake is to die for and the cinnamon ice cream pairs nicely with it. I had a whiskey based cocktail. It tasted more like whiskey than a cocktail but I do love whiskey so I was ok with it. A final word for the service. All the servers were very kind and good at their jobs.

Paul J.

Yelp
We attended a New Year's Eve event at Sushisamba Covent Garden and the whole experience was over-rated and over-priced. They charged $500 just to reserve a table for 4 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, not including the price of the food. The food and drinks were honestly mediocre and the so-called entertainment was just a few women walking through and dancing a few times. Maybe this place is less of a tourist trap on other nights, but very disappointing for us. We left early and went to another place for the countdown.

Bryan B.

Yelp
Loved it. Such a cool hip place, ambiance was great, great service and some of the best sushi I've had. We got Wagyu beef too that was very good as well.
google avatar

Saja H.

Yelp
SUSHISAMBA is absolutely on my top 5 of best restaurant experiences, a very classy vibrant, uplifting, colorful place. Phenomenal service, and atmosphere, and even better food. The food was so creative, it made it so much fun to eat. I love the idea of Japan, Brazil, and Peru coming together to make some wonderful food options. You cannot go wrong with anything you order. Extremely pricey, but very well worth it, you get the quality you are paying for. The pictures do not give the creativity of the dishes justice.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
SUSHISAMBA is a large and hopping sushi restaurant well-suited for groups. The place has tropical decor and a lot of energy, and it can get a bit loud. The food was tasty, though not always authentic. There were a lot of fusion dishes which were only pseudo-Japanese, such as fish taquitos and fried calamari. The sushi we got was also heavier with mayo, tempura, and the like, though they have fresher and simpler sushi, if that's your preference. On the whole I prefer a more traditional and subdued sushi experience, but if you want more of a sushi party, SUSHISAMBA is a good choice.

Peter M.

Yelp
Pricey but excellent. Great food, service and ambience. Unique dishes. A very enjoyable experience.

Annika M.

Yelp
Racist experience, do yourself a favour and go to Nobu Visiting from America and it's the first day of our trip. We were in the Covent Garden area and had a couple drinks. We were in the mood for sushi and considered going to Nobu. We found out that there is actually a SUSHISAMBA in Covent Garden, so we decided to go. We have been to the location in Las Vegas before, as well as to the on by Liverpool Street. We approached and were "greeted" by a skinhead-looking Eastern European bouncer, who had his arms crossed and looked my African American boyfriend up and down. He said we can't come in (mind you, it is supposed to be an upscale establishment, not the pub next door). We asked why, and he rudely said that we cannot come in, followed by the possible lie that there wad a private event. The reason he did not let us in was painfully clear. We challenged him and asked - why the menu was outside - Why there were no signs that said that there was a private event - And lastly, how he knew that we were not part of this private event We asked to speak to the manager, he didn't acknowledge our request. We asked why he was plainly not letting us in for obvious reasons. We called the restaurant, but even the lady on the phone seemed somewhat unbothered by the incident and made up a stupid excuse. So SUSHISAMBA management, you want to position yourself as a luxury restaurant, yet allow these type of individuals to work for you. I also don't want to hear the excuse that the bouncer is working for a third party. This is pathetic behaviour for your chain and for the location - multicultural London.

Jasmin C.

Yelp
Hidden above covenant garden, this restaurant has such a cool vibe. Massive windows on one half of the restaurant provide a great view to look out - especially nice at night to see all the building lit up. The interior of the restaurant gives more of a cocktail bar vibes with its leafy decor - but the food definitely stood up. Very unique tasting sushi and interesting flavours. Lots of options for people wanting to try rolls, small plates and large hot dishes. During Christmas, the Christmas roll is a definite highlight with 3 variations on the one rolls itself. The yellowtail Tostitos as well as the toro tirdito are highlights for small plates. Only reason this didn't get 5 stars is because we weren't really warned about the 2 hour time limit so the end of the meal felt a bit rushed.

Ron D.

Yelp
It was awful. The scallop ceviche that I ordered smelled so bad I couldn't touch it. We paid 80 pounds for 4- pieces of mushrooms dumplings and a scallops ceviche that we could Not eat and two glasses of white wine. You guys avoid this place

Ethan K.

Yelp
Excellent food, service and atmosphere. Our hotel concierge pushed the Bishopsgate location but this one seems to be the better choice for atmosphere and surrounding location with other shops and restaurants nearby. The sushi was creative and tasty, the miso soup was hot and well prepared, the edamame was warm and well salted, the sake was good but seemed overpriced given it was such a small bottle. In addition, the sommelier could have been better at giving us a sample of the sakes by the glass before being charged for the samples and the bottle.

Terese H.

Yelp
My hubby and I pooped into this place on our spring trip to London. Very inventive decor. Overlooks Covent Garden Piazza. Great drink list, fabulous music and chill, yet energetic atmosphere.
