Susupuato Review - Edgewater - Chicago - The Infatuation

"In the corner of Susupuato is a brightly lit cabinet showcasing tequila and beer, hinting that this place knows how to have a good time. But even if margaritas aren’t on your agenda, the solid Mexican dishes at this casual Edgewater spot make it worth a visit. The steak tacos are perfectly seasoned, and the plump enchiladas are covered in a smooth, smoky mole. Just know that since all of the entrees come as a dinner set with rice and beans (no individual taco orders here), this sit-down spot can be a little pricier compared to other places in the area, like ." - John Ringor

A recent discovery that quickly became a favorite! I’ve been several times already and everything is always delicious. The meats, in particular, are incredibly flavorful. The service is outstanding! Special thanks to Tony, who always makes sure we have everything we need (and even lets us choose the music!). The place is spacious, comfortable, and baby-friendly, which is a huge plus for families. Also, they speak Spanish, which makes the experience even more welcoming. Highly recommended!

Google
This restaurant is amazing!! Their food is delicious and their watermelon margarita is amazing! We had the mole special and their tacos al pastor dinner, both of which were so goooood!! Will be definitely coming back!

Such an amazing hidden gem! Food was EXCELLENT. I got the enchiladas suizas with ground beef and my partner got the tostadas with al pastor. We both loved our meals. The staff was also super friendly and attentive. It was our first time here, but we will definitely be back!

Food was DELICIOUS! Steak nachos were served with a fresh dollop of guacamole and the tacos were great. Chicken tacos were marinated in heaven sauce lol! Service was on point and pleasant. We enjoyed the passion fruit margaritas and loved them! Will be back to try the quesadillas! Tony was a great server!

I ate here only once many years ago and didn't think it was anything special. I recently tried it again based on all the great reviews and I am so glad I did. The food was delicious. I ordered the veg quesadillas and I was surprised how fresh and tasty they were. I also got a steak burrito that was equally yummy. The meat was tender and spiced perfectly. The ratio of filling to tortilla was perfect for both items. Their beans and salsas are also great. I had my food delivered and it held up perfectly in transit. They are now open for lunch and I can't wait to try dining in the restaurant and trying their Margaritas.

I went there with my Mexican friend who wanted to introduce me to her culture. First of all, I totally liked the bright and colorful interior of the restaurant! It has many details that represent Mexican culture! The food was delicious, I liked everything what we tried! It was a real pleasure to enjoy new tastes. Also, the waiters were very helpful and nice. Definitely recommend this place to visit if you want to spend time with pleasure✨️

Google
The Al pastor Tostadas. It will turn your day around, truly a great experience and the service was incredible. I will think about that tostada until I go back again!

Google
I have come to Susupuato off and on for years. They are my go to for good food. I recently asked Tony to make me 100 Spinach Quesadilla's for a block party. The sauteed spinach with onions , mushrooms and cheese were mouth watering and a hit at the party. Tony prepared them so they would be finger food and packaged them in an eye pleasing manner. He has always been professional and friendly but outdid himself with this order. I am grateful he is in our neighborhood.

Yelp
My partner moved to Edgewater and Susupuato has been our favorite Mexican take-out for the last couple of years. We finally experienced their dine-in experience and it lives up to all of the great reviews here! Margaritas were outstanding, I had a classic on the rocks while she had a strawberry blended. Guacamole was fresh and tasty with chips and salsa appetizer. She had her favorite chicken enchiladas mole while I had my fave, their chiles rellenos. Susupuato is definitely the place to be, if you are in Edgewater or nearby (Loyola, Uptown, Rogers Park, Evanston)!

Yelp
Wow, wow, wow! Welcome Susupuato to the hall of fame. Boom! Automatically admitted. We start with a traditional lime margarita. Not too sweet, present lime flavors, a little citrus, and noticeable booziness. While not the best I'd had, it was a basic item done right. It is also light orange in color... juice, perhaps? Don't know, and honestly, does it matter? Am I Lillian Bloom from "The Menu"? No. Just a guy with a Yelp account, and time (plus restless fingers) on his hands. Final note: they start at a "large" 17oz variant... so you know it's going to be a good time! I wasn't even halfway through, and it was already a party! I have work tomorrow you glorious people! After my recent taco craze, I saw the Enchiladas de Mole on the menu, and they immediately called out to me. Kind of like in Harry Potter, Olivander says "the wand chooses the wizard," well, the meal chooses [me]. At my server's suggestion, I ordered them with chicken. I think I have made Mole once before, and it didn't work for me, yet I was very hopeful. Trying the sauce on the tines of my fork, I immediately knew I made the right call. A little sweet, a light kick, and a divine savoriness! Chicken filling is tender as can be, I think the tiny bit of salt it is seasoned with is all it needs. Like with the margarita, simplicity done right. The rice was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Though the refried beans surprised me! These seemed homemade, and were creamy if that makes sense! I might even ask for seconds! I gloriously 'licked' (with fork and rice) the plate clean. If you see me here tomorrow, don't be surprised! The service was also fantastic! Quick, attentive, personable, friendly - what great service should be! Where it comes to prices, these are in-line with what I expect from Chicago, however this is just numbers. A drink with the strength of three and Enchiladas God eats at least weekly, the value to second-to-none. To keep Yelp happy: I loved their vibe as well! There is plenty of room, the decor is tasteful and not overdone, and clean of course. Dude... come here already!!

Yelp
Susupuato is my favorite Mexican restaurant on the Northside! It is rare to find a place that makes delicious margaritas and food. For over a year I had been wanting to check Susupuato off my list and I regret waiting so long to visit. I have been to the restaurant at least five times since my first visit! The food is never disappointing nor the margaritas anytime I have been. The staff is very nice. I have visited with different people and they always greet us with a friendly smile. If you aren't sure what dish to order or margarita to purchase they also have a recommendation. The inside of the restaurant is very spacious and can accommodate a variety of sizes. Anytime I have visited there have been ample seats available so I rarely have to wait to be seated. I really like the music, it is normally the top songs of different years so I always find myself nodding along to the music. Be forewarned that the food is on the middle to higher end but you easily can get two meals from your order. I normally am able to get two or two and a half meals. My go to dish is the chimichanga meal with steak. The chimichanga is massive and delicious! The frozen margarita is unbelievable! Anytime I recommend Susupuato i rave about the drinks. They are just the right amount of strong and actually taste like the fruit. My go-to flavor is the frozen mixed berry and I will do on the rocks if I do not feel like going the frozen route but I rarely don't want the frozen option! Do not hesitant to visit Susupuato like I did!

Yelp
Service is outstanding. Food is consistently delicious. Margaritas are strong and there are so many flavors Tony, the owner loves his customers and it shows!! Customer service still exists!!!

Yelp
Amazing mole chicken enchiladas. Great place for a party or a date. Fantastic service that deserves all the praise. Happy to skip flacos and eat here instead.

Yelp
We are so very lucky to have this place in our neighborhood. we've been going here for a couple of years now and we've literally not had one bad piece of anything at this restaurant. Everything there is made with such love and care and precision. It's amazing. Plus the staff including the owner Tony, are always so kind. Really makes you feel like home. As far as specific recommendations I was always someone who never cared for molé, but Tony asked me to try it the first time we were there and I got hooked. It's the perfect recipe for Molé. Not too chocolatey just a little bit spicy, very smooth. I also highly recommend the tostadas.

Yelp
So wish I had discovered this place sooner!!!!! Great food, great service, fantastic drinks, festive atmosphere! Try the house-recommended enchiladas with mole! LOVED IT! My huge strawberry margarita was divine. Will definitely be going back! Big thanks to Tony and his excellent wait staff who made us feel so welcomed and at home.

Yelp
Best Mexican in Edgewater. It is sooo good. Nothing you get here are you going to dislike. We got fajitas and the mole cheese enchiladas. Both were to die for!!! A bit pricey but worth it. The service is like a fine dining place with attention and kindness. We got a shot of tequila on the house and a bowl of soup! Also you have to get a margarita, you cannot taste the alcohol, and it isn't watery at all!!

Jack S.

Yelp
Susupuato has been great every time I've been! Tony is the best and the food never disappoints!

Yelp
After a year of sedentary living, I have slowly reintroduced myself to the gym. And although I have been cooking at home so to maintain my discipline with being a pescatarian, there are times when I have started ordering for takeaway. However, while in Chicago's Edgewater buying Ethiopian spices for recipes, I stopped by a Mexican restaurant on the way home. Susupuato Restaurant and Taqueria at 6161 N. Broadway Avenue was just what I needed. I ordered guacamole with chips and a platter of fish tacos with Spanish rice and refried beans. First to the table were complementary chips with salsa. Unlike most salsa, this was not of the chunky variety. There still was flavor in each bite. Then there was a soup on the house, which was a tomato based soup that had noodles and cilantro in it. The guacamole was a plus. It wasn't salty, like I've had at a few taquerias, and there was a fair enough amount of cilantro in it to give it a flavorful boost. Loved every bit of the fish tacos. The chef chopped up the tilapia, so they were not whole pieces. The butter, onions, tomatoes, and chipotle sauce in the recipe really kicked them up a notch. Topped with avocado slices, they will be my "go to" tacos for when I return. The Spanish rice and refried beans were seasoned just right, not bland, and not salty. Because of COVID, there may be more takeaway and delivery than in-house dining. Nevertheless, whatever you buy is worth it, if you like a little authenticity in your Mexican dining rather than something bordering on fast food. Add to that good service, I will certainly stop in again next time I am in Edgewater and want something before heading to my next destination.

Yelp
If you're looking for great authentic Mexican food, strong drinks and a great time I highly suggest checking out El Pulpo Loco. Took my family there for my last night visiting in Chicago and I'm happy I ended my trip on a high note. Service was 5 stars, as was the food. I know it might be off to mention but bathrooms were spotless as well. Next time I'm visiting Chicago I'll be coming back!

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised visiting Susupuato. Unassuming on the outside, the inside decor is bright and festive. The service is quick and oh so welcoming. We tried the mole, which was rich and scrumptious. The guacamole was fresh and vibrant. Antonio, the server, made us feel at home and well fed. The restaurant serves up delicious food at great value!

Santiago L.

Yelp
I have to say that the Mole at Susupuato is one of the best we ever had very much home made. My wife and son ordered the chicken enchiladas in mole and they finish them all, I was suprised to see my wife finished her plate since she is very picky on what to eat. This Restaurant is my sons favorite spot in the north side to eat Mexican food. I ordered the chicken tacos and they where good I put a little Mole on my tacos and they where indeed delicious. the margaritas are also great. We will make this our favorite spot to eat Mexican food. Thank you Tony for the great food.

Yelp
This was my first time in Susupuato, honestly I was always curious for trying the food from this place but unfortunately it is not open everyday (I don't know why) . My server was Elena, she was very friendly and gave me great recommendations , I ordered the carne asada enchiladas and guess what , they were so good ! This place should be more popular , I highly recommend this restaurant because the server was nice, the food was delicious and the portion generous also .

Yelp
Mexican restaurants, what comes to mind? Yup, the greatest hits such as guacamole, tacos, burritos, chilies relllenos and fajitas. That is why we usually go. We stopped by Susupuato on a chilly evening. Unlike the outside, the insight is bright and welcoming. The person there was excellent in welcoming us and giving us a rundown of the menu. We ordered steak fajitas, rice and beans. He brought over a complimentary sopa de fideo along with chips and salsa. The fajitas was enough for two people. Overall it was solid cooking at a reasonable price. Come on over and give this place a try. Excellent service, nice environment and good food.

Yelp
I believe this is the third time I'm reviewing this place, because it is that amazing. I've been dining here for years, and it is consistent every time. The food is authentic, delicious, and well worth the money. The service is top notch, and it's cute and cozy. I tried their "bistec a la mexicana" and I left very happy.
google avatar

Rebecca E.

Yelp
First of all, the food is delish but if you are looking for the best margaritas in the city, this is the place. They are big and strong and beyond scrumptious. Tony is the best server! He has become the highlight (other than the margs) of our time here. Whenever we have a family milestone or celebration, this is our go-to. There is NOTHING on the menu we don't like! Put it on your list of places to try, you won't be disappointed.

Scott R.

Yelp
WAY overpriced for no reason. Food was nothing special, burrito was small and the restaurant puts no effort into decor. $26 for a burrito and a beer is criminal

Madison G.

Yelp
Best margaritas EVER here (I've had both the passion fruit and watermelon and they're deeeelish). Cute ambiance, and super friendly waitstaff. Food's also great! Definitely recommend

Gary D.

Yelp
We are assuming that the restaurant is taking a holiday break, today is New Year's Day but we called last week on Thursday 12/28 and no answer on the telephone and while walking past on another errand, no signs indicating that they are away. While you are here, please take note of their telephone number since it isn't on their own website (also they still list chiles rellenos, which are no longer offered sadly).

Yelp
We wanted to try Susupuato for some time because of their good reviews. I chose the Burrito Suizo with ground beef and my friend ordered three steak tacos and later ordered a side of rice & beans. Rice & beans are included with the Taco Dinner but not the Burrito. The burrito was really good with lots of melted cheese on top with a good red sauce (you can have green too). I liked the rice. It had a well balanced spice taste, on the other hand the beans were flavorless. She said that her Steak Tacos were good too. Here comes the confusion and the quirks. Most Mexican restaurants have Salsa on the table or at the very least you can order it, but they didn't have it available either way. Another thing I thought odd was you have to pay extra for flour tortillas, usually you have a choice of corn or flour but not a $1.00 up charge for flour tortillas. They don't have Tostados on the menu, I thought that was strange. They don't have Iced Tea. The day we went there was in the mid-90s, I couldn't understand why they didn't have Iced Tea. The online menu, the restaurant menu and your bill didn't match prices. The Burrito Suizo was $13.50 online, $13.00 on the restaurant menu and my bill had $15.00 plus $6.00 for an order of rice & beans, I think that's a little steep. If you read one of the past Yelp reviews it shows a Burrito Suizo with the rice & beans on the same plate. I was going by that photo but found out there was an extra charge. I would definitely go back but use the restaurant menu for prices, it seems to be the least amount. Our waitress was quite knowledgeable with the menu and was very nice and attentive.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
The only place in town where I've found sizzling hot fajitas, so that's a winner in my book. The food here is solid, though the prices are a little high for a place that doesn't look high scale.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
AMAZING!! tacos are my favorite food and i am very particular about them. this was authentic and DELICIOUS. the service was great. we were given free chips and salsa and soup on the house. the food came out fresh, warm, and fast. GO HERE!! i love mexican food and am very picky about where i go, but this is definitely on my list for best authentic mexican food :))

Yelp
Amazing place. Have had numerous great times here for celebrations, birthdays, dates, and ordering online for delivery. The restaurant is welcoming, beautifully decorated and exceptionally clean. The owner and staff are so awesome and friendly. But the star of the experience is the food. Best molè in Chicago, hands down. While the menu may not be pages and pages long like some of the more "tourist trap" Mexican restaurants, what this place offers is perfectly made, generously portioned, and ultimately and most important, delicious. Their margaritas are huge, by the glass or by the pitcher, and come in around 16 different flavors. But don't worry if you are a traditionalist, there is the classic margarita to satisfy as well. Their molè is made by hand by a special woman who comes in once a week and makes it all from scratch. Once it is gone, you gotta wait for her next visit for more. And it is certainly worth the wait. A hidden gem in the Edgewater neighborhood, but so valuable to those of us who have discovered it.

Raphael C.

Yelp
Excellent food. Excellent service. I absolutely love coming here for date night with my husband, but tonight, brought my family here while they were in town. We had a wonderful time, cannot recommend the mole enchiladas enough-- they are truly heavenly. Also indulged in the flan and margaritas-- such a treat. Tony provided wonderful service, was knowledgeable about the menu, and truly made our experience one to remember. Thank you for making our evening so special!!
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
They charge $4 for chips & salsa now. $18 for a Paloma. The decor & atmosphere don't match those prices. Enchiladas Suizas were forgettable. Mole tasted nice. I give it a pass.
google avatar

Marilyn D.

Yelp
The best authentic food I've ever had outside from my motherland. The owner Antonio is so wonderful, he took the time to get to know us, so it's always a pleasure to go back. Their Margaritas are a no brainer with so many flavors to choose from.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I was really on the border of a 3 or a 4. Their Covid spacing of tables, offering a mask to a customer picking up a to go order incase he needed to go anywhere else and friendly service made it a 4. A couple things to note. The website on Yelp is not up to date. I have attached the menu to this review for folks. This place is pretty good if your in the mood for Mexican dishes. We got the chicken enchilada and chicken tamales with the green sauce and both were good but not the best we've had. The two dishes and one frozen marg with tip got us to about 60 bucks which is higher then I would have thought it should be both for the amount of food and quality. They do give you some chips and salsa for free which is nice but it comes with this tiny salsa dish and spoon to get it on the chips. If management is reading this consider a bigger salsa dish and may be a chunkier salsa or pico. Service was on point and felt safe with the table spacing. We will be back.

Francesca C.

Yelp
Susupuato is such a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. My partner and I have been several times, and decided to go there for our anniversary dinner. We had a lovely time, and delicious food. We shared chips & salsa, and a pitcher of the Traditional Lime Margarita. We also had the Enchiladas Suizas and the Chicken Burrito Dinner. The food is always so fresh and flavorful. Our waiter was very kind and even gave us a shot of tequila on the house to celebrate. The decor and ambiance are beautiful, with excellent music selections and fun decorations. We love coming to Susupuato any chance we can, and will definitely be back!
google avatar

Polly L.

Yelp
Food was great. The mole is excellent and had passion fruit margaritas. Even had some soup on the house. Very friendly service as well.

Mary W.

Yelp
GO. HERE. Tony and his team have created a wonderful restaurant with delicious food and friendly, attentive service. While the name is the same, this is a different restaurant than what you may have visited before. Some special highlights: 1) Margaritas- delicious, large, good value 2) Mole- home-made! The chicken enchiladas mole are extra good 3) Chili relleños- both the cheese and ground beef versions are excellent, not greasy at all 4) Chorizo- speaking of not being greasy, Susupuato takes care to drain off the orange grease for the most delicious burrito, tacos, or nachos (we've ordered them all) Please support this excellent local business that is producing delicious food with friendly service! Tony will take of you!!

Yelp
It was a lazy Saturday afternoon and I hadn't eaten in a while. I chose Susupuato, because it was the closest in proximity. I expected to make my typical quesadilla order (something completely foolproof), because being Mexican, I get to be a snob about my food. When I arrived at the table, the waiter brought out the chips and salsa and I tasted it and knew immediately the salsa was fresh. I thought to myself, maybe I should branch out. I browsed the menu and it said that they made their mole from scratch so I ordered the mole enchiladas. Amazing! My boyfriend ordered the ribs in salsa verde. The meat fell off the bone Honestly, you could even taste the fullness in flavor in the beans. We also ordered a margarita and a piña colada and flan to go. All was solid. I am now becoming a regular.

Olivia G.

Yelp
An overall 10/10 experience! We started off with margaritas, which were both delicious. We were treated to soup on the house! I order the shrimp taco dinner, which was very flavorful and delicious. The service was amazing and the staff was very kind.
google avatar

Lizi P.

Yelp
The Chile relleno is out of this world and the watermelon margarita is so fresh. I highly recommend trying this fantastic restaurant

Sue W.

Yelp
Chicken fajita quesadilla was delicious!! Everyone enjoyed their dinners. Mole enchiladas were also great!******

Noah A.

Yelp
Awesome food. Good service. Not as popular as it deserves to be. The interior is nice as well.

Samantha F.

Yelp
This is absolutely my favorite restaurant in the area! The service is fabulous (TONY IS AMAZING) and you are treated like family the second you walk in the door! It has a cozy atmosphere and the food is fabulous! You get a large portion for the amount you are paying! I can't say enough amazing compliments about Susupuato!

Rachel T.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican restaurant in Chicago! I will continue to go here even after I have moved out of the area because their food and service is so good! The margaritas are FANTASTIC and everything on the menu is fairly priced. The restaurant itself is cute and inviting. I will always be back to Susupuato! Tony is the best!
google avatar

Ruby M.

Yelp
This is my second visit in a while and I highly recommend it. Sadly the only thing I've tried are the tacos with ground beef and they are sinfully delicious. Next time I will try something new.
google avatar

Sis B.

Yelp
It's hard for me to stray from the chicken al pastor tacos, they are spicy and flavorful - not dry at all. When I do order something other than tacos; sopas, enchaladas, gorditas, I certainly don't regret it. Every mole dish is also outstanding and authentically homemade- you gotta try the mole nachos. Also, its always nice to support a small, local, Edgewater business that care about their customers.
google avatar

Jen O.

Yelp
Super delicious and authentic Mexican food, best mole we've ever had! Kind and friendly staff that greeted us with warm soup on the house on a snowy day. Delicious enchiladas Suiza too! Everything great!

Terry M.

Yelp
The Food was very good and the staff was nice but I must admit I may have been living under a rock (also admit I haven't had Mexican food for awhile) that it's now $22.00 for a burrito dinner?(with small sides of beans and rice) Decided to get an al pastor taco as well and my bill was $29 and change without a tip yet. I guess those days of $10 burritos are long gone. My fault for not checking the prices.
google avatar

Yelp
From previous reviews it seems like this place changed ownership. I'll speak from my current experience. Restaurant is very cute and clean. The layout is nice and comfortable. The service was great. Very nice waitress with knowledge of the dishes. She served is fast and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was very good and fresh. The camarones a la diabla were good and def spicy. The ribs were served in green sauce. It was very tender fall off home. It was also spicy. Both dishes were very tasty and nicely prepared. We were served a complimentary chicken noodle soup in tomato sauce. It was very good. The chips were fresh and the salsa's were delicious. The dishes came with fresh warm tortillas. I don't know how the previous owners were doing, but the current ones are doing great. The piña colada was delicious You should def give this restaurant a shot. I think their more mainstream dishes like tacos and burritos would be good based on the food we had today.

Barbara E.

Yelp
We just went for Cinco DeMayo and I had my usual chicken mole enchilada. Also enjoyed a margarita and some guacamole and chips. My partner had pastor tacos. We finished everything and we went home to have a food coma. I can't wait to do it again.

Ilei B.

Yelp
Love love love this place! Everyone is super nice and welcoming, food is yummy, and drinks are delicious. Very authentic. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
Had a late dinner here on a Monday night and it wasn't busy. The food was great! We had the steak taco dinner and burrito bowl, as well as complimentary soups and a complimentary coconut flan to go. I unfortunately didn't catch our waiters name, but he was fantastic! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Cam M.

Yelp
I thought I reviewed this place already. I'm def a fan of this place. When they changed to opening earlier, I started coming here more. It's convenient to get to since it is pretty close to the Granville Red Line stop. This place is one of my two "I don't feel like cooking" and I'm on my way home places. I like that they offer take-out. I've never had dine-in, but I have had take-out and delivery from this place (delivery when I lived farther away). This is the type of neighborhood Mexican Food place that I love. If you're looking for a trendy Mexican food place, go somewhere else. If you're looking for great tasting food with fairly large portions-go here. 99% of the time, I get some sort of Burrito Dinner to-go. They don't skimp on the meat for the burritos. The lady working at the counter has always been helpful and friendly.
google avatar

Patrick J.

Yelp
Most of the food was good but not special. This included the refried beans and yellow rice. However I had the Gordita dinner as a main course and it was excellent. It was reminiscent in flavor of the best burrito that I ever had. The difference is that it was not a burrito. It was different and fun to eat. I should have asked for hot sauce but it was still very much fun. I sat at a table in the window and watching the foot traffic on Broadway between eating and reading . It was quite an entertaining dining experience. I recommend the Gorditas and ask for hot sauce if you are feeling hot. I could have asked but was done eating as I could not pull myself away.
