The Best New Restaurants in Houston, Texas in July 2025 | Eater Houston

"This new fast-casual Nigerian spot in Humble is worth the commute. Located in a strip mall in the North Houston suburb, Suya features a menu of burritos, bowls, sandwiches, salads, and empanadas. Named after suya, a nutty spice blend also known as yaji and a term for a popular Nigerian street food that consists of grilled skewered meats, the restaurant models itself after Chipotle’s format. Diners can build burritos, bowls, sandwiches, and salads using popular West African ingredients and dishes, like jollof rice, plantains, couscous, stewed black beans, and braised meats." - Brittany Britto Garley

I love, love their empanadas!!! The dough is to die for and it’s huge! The meat inside is delicious and tender with the right amount of seasoning. My husband got the burrito and the size of it is for two people. It’s packed with great tasting meat, rice and veggies! Your serving of protein, veggies and carbs in every bite! Yum! The best thing is they cook their food with love and passion and you can taste it! The restaurant is also very clean and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend!

We came here about 2weeks ago. The customer service was OUTSTANDING! The 2 ladies up front was very patient and knowledgeable about the menu. The only thing I didn't like was how expensive the Sunkist was, it was like $4 for this bottle. We ordered a meat pie, jollof, and a burrito.

Y’all… I just tried this new Nigerian spot and whewww! It’s giving CAVA meets Chipotle — but with a whole Nigerian twist. When I walked in, the place was completely empty, so I was lowkey nervous. Clean, but completely empty. The food looked super fresh, but not gonna lie… it looked kinda flavorless, so my expectations dropped a little. The young man serving me was very polite & took his time answering my questions. I got the steak bowl, and let me tell you — the steak looked dry and unseasoned, but baby… I was WRONG. I also asked for extra spice on the side and the sauce they use for the sandwiches — get that sauce!! It takes everything to another level. Took my food to go, still unsure… but y’all, the way I tore that bowl UP at home?! The plantains, the steak, jollof rice, mixed veggies, and that sauce combo?! 🔥 They’re really on to something. This place is about to blow up overnight, just watch. Only thing I’d suggest — they should add cucumber and maybe one more veggie as a topping option, and they need to give out that magic sauce automatically. Like, don’t make folks have to ask for greatness!

Ordered the Stake Suya bowl, The flavors are on point! perfect amount of spice & other flavors and the plantains just brings it all together wonderfully, my only gripe is that the beef was a little on the tough end but the flavors make up for it. The Beef Patty was delicious. cant wait to try more of their menu!

The first bite transported me back to Nigeria! The spice is just right. The meat pies are large! Thank you for having such tasty food.

I had a really great experience here. I enjoyed the food (I had the Suya Steak burrito) but the service was exemplary. The staff went out of their way to make sure we knew what was available (first timers) and even made sure we would be ok with the spice. They were very attentive and welcoming, which made the experience even better. The burrito was very tasty, and I loved the interplay between the spices and the sweetness of the plantain. It was also very filling, and you definitely get a lot of food. I didn't get a chance to try the meat pies, but I'll be back to give those a try!

Absolutely loved our visit! The staff was super friendly, and Lin, the owner, was incredibly thorough and welcoming. We were so excited to try everything—we basically ordered the whole menu, and we were not disappointed. Every dish was delicious! The location is perfect, and a spot like this is exactly what the area needed. We’ll definitely be back soon!

Google
Fast casual Nigerian food. Pretty much Nigerian version of chipotle I guess. Ran by a Nigerian gentleman and his very welcoming wife. The food was good, the customer service was better. Will be coming back and bringing my wife and son. Hoping to see a soda fountain in the future once they are more established and have a little foot traffic. Great spot to check out.

Yelp
If you're looking for a healthier but flavorful and filling meal.. this is a great option! It's like an Uburrito/Chipotle... but with Nigerian jollof rice, creamy delicious black beans, sweet plantains and your choice of beef or chicken! I learned that Suya is a dry spice (mild or spicy) that you enjoy on top of your food so definitely give it a try if you're in the Humble area! Also, the owners were very sweet and explained the menu and how the plantains and empanadas aren't fried... so that's a plus being that it's so much better for us... so awesome! Check their website for the detail menu and go support!

Yelp
My lady and I were excited to try this new South African casual dining spot after being drawn in by its vibrant, culturally rich website. Unfortunately, the experience didn't match the promise and left us underwhelmed. Food I ordered the Suya steak bowl, expecting bold spices and flame-kissed flavor. What I got instead was a severely overcooked, well-done steak. Dry, lacking any char, and completely void of that signature Suya kick. Honestly, it was borderline disrespectful to the dish's origin. The plantains were uninspired and basic. The jollof rice was surprisingly solid -- easily the best part of the meal. Service I'm someone who truly values great service. It can redeem a meal. Sadly, that wasn't the case here. There was no greeting when I walked in and no acknowledgment. I stood behind two other guests as a lone staff member silently prepared their order at a snail's pace. Eventually, a manager had to summon another staff member from the back, who arrived looking disengaged and unprepared. Ambiance The atmosphere felt sterile, almost like a hospital cafeteria. For a concept rooted in the rich culture and vibrancy of South Africa, it lacked any visual or emotional warmth. The colorful spirit of the website was completely absent in the physical space. There's potential here, and I want to root for this place, but the gap between what's marketed and what's delivered is too wide to ignore. I hope they can lean more into the authenticity of the cuisine and elevate both the hospitality and ambiance to match the vision they're selling online.

Yelp
It seems like a fairly new establishment as the restaurant was clean and well lit. I got the steak bowl but I was not a fan. The issue was the meat. It was tough and not really marinated that well. The meat reminded me of low quality stew meat that was pan fried until brown and then thrown into the bowl. The second thing I got was the plantains, again, not seasoned and I believe they were air fried which gave them a dried out toughness to them. One more thing I discovered after I got home, I kept smelling Suya Outpost and couldn't sniff out where the smell was coming from. I found it ON MY SHIRT. My clothes were inundated with smokey paprika and wood.

Yelp
Food was hot, delicious, and very well seasoned. There was a good amount of steak buried under the lettuce.

Yelp
Saw an ig post from the Houston Chronicle and was intrigued! Suya Outpost is reminiscent of a Nigerian Chipotle. Walking in it's unassuming, nicely decorated, with plenty of seating to have lunch, grab a bite with family or friends or even get some work in. You can choose a bowl, burrito, salad, or sandwich with your personalized choice of meats, beans, veggies, and such. Everything was yummy. They kept asking me about my spice preference and if I had any peanut allergies so I guess beware if that's you. I ordered the beef empanada. It was delicious warm, flaky, with a tiny hit of spiced beef and veggies pastry snacky snack in route home. When I got home I devoured a 1/4 of the bowl, it's a large portion AND I'd eaten the beef empanada on the way home. I tried to eat it in sections to try everything individually, wonderful and amazing. But the perfect bite is the mix of sweet plantain, beans, and both meats! It's heaven in bowl. I was taken aback by the lack of cheese and sauce, because I'm accustomed to well Chipotle, but with the soft sweet plantain you don't need it nor will your mouth miss it. The lack of both cheese and sauce allows the bits to not get soggy and maintain their yummy integrity when you go back for more. The portions are definitely shareable. Next time, and there will be a next time, I want to try the plantain chips and the sweet potato cheesecake. Try something different, your tastebuds will thank you!

Yelp
food was good but Christine's customer service and hospitality were even better! I'd definitely go back I love the sweetness the plantain adds to the bowls
