"The idea behind this restaurant is “Thai cuisine perceived by Australians,” a concept we’ve come to understand as “possibly inauthentic yet highly delicious, vaguely Thai food.” Much like Australia, we like the idea of that very much. photo credit: Sway/Facebook One of the original restaurants on South 1st, Sway is at least somewhat responsible for this part of Austin’s evolution into a trendy restaurant-rich stretch of road. A large, dimly lit, dare we say “sexy” restaurant (already regretting that), Sway is actually a place we’d recommend less for a date and more for a big group outing. The menu lends itself to sharing, and the size of the room makes it’s great for a big gathering. It’s also a lively place during peak dinner hours, which makes it a lot of fun but also quite loud. Try to show up with your group early to snag a good table, or make a reservation. It’s also worth noting that if you’re looking to accompany your dinner with one or ten vodka sodas, Sway’s not your spot. They only offer beer, wine, and sake. Clear that with your crew before you have some hangry boozehounds on your hands. Or just get some more responsible friends. Food Rundown Thai Iced Tea What looks like an ice cream sundae is actually a jolt of caffeine and condensed milk to start your meal off with a bang. Pad Thai A pretty standard translation of pad thai. It comes with shrimp and is not to be missed. Papaya Salad Zesty and refreshing. Don’t be swayed (no pun intended) by the dried shrimp seeming a little weird. Try it. This is very good as a starter. The Whole Fish This might be Sway’s biggest plate, and one of the few that lacks noodles or rice. Try it “crispy” - flash fried and meant to be picked apart to the bone, scales and all. The Son-In-Law The crown jewel of Sway, this is a gooey mess of sweet and savory braised pork shoulder, fried egg, and spices. Strongly consider finishing your entrée course with this. Banana Split This beast serves up to four people and is made with chocolate, condensed milk, cashew caramel swirl ice cream, black sesame brownie, candied cashew, coconut milk jam, “drunken cherries,” bananas, and whipped cream. Is this even a question? You could stop in exclusively for dessert and leave happy." - Jordan Haro

"Adored modern Thai restaurant Sway closed its original location permanently on 1417 South First Street in the Bouldin Creek neighborhood. Sway is known for its Australian-style Thai food served in a stunning modern open-space with big wooden communal tables. Popular dishes include the son-in-law (a braised pork shoulder dish with a crispy hard-boiled egg), the jungle curry, and the salt-and-pepper soft shell crab, among others." - Nadia Chaudhury

"For jungle curry, look to Sway, which uses wagyu beef, paired with peppercorns and coconut cream for the dish." - Nadia Chaudhury

My business partner and I had dinner here, and wow! From the food to the service, greattt! I will definitely be back here. The atmosphere of this restaurant is cozy and dark, great spot for a group gathering or even a date. We started off with the blue prawn satay, beef hangar steak, pork sirloin satay and all were great, then we had a papaya salad, it was very fresh but surprisingly not spicy at all. Next up an order of the chicken wings, wow those were great, and for my main entree the peanut curry chicken... Damn if you want to sweat out toxins in your body, I recommend the peanut curry chicken, it was incredibly spicy but Soo addicting to eat lol, make sure to have water service on standby to keep refilling your water pitcher. I'll be visiting again the next time I'm back in town.

Sway is a modern Thai restaurant nestled in the southern side of Austin. The restaurant itself does have several "community" type tables so be aware you could be seating with other groups during busy hours. Also, if you have a large party you should probably reserve and be aware there could be a long wait if you don't. The design of the place is refreshing and offers excellent outside eating ambiance. The food is amazing. Definitely some unique flavors depending what you get. I would say the only negative is the fried rice which didn't strike me as beyond the price point, which I do agree is $$$. Beyond that I think the food is exceptional and worth a bit more. Seasoning is quite exquisite on plenty of the dishes I tried in our party. Staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. So if you have questions, ASK. Overall, a great Thai place to try out. If you have done some research on the place there should be no surprises.

This is the BEST thai place ever! I never expirienced this kind of luxury taste before. All the food looks so pretty with nice decoration. I could feel their chef/chefs is/are so thoughtful and prepare the food with pride. Every single dish was perfect so i would recommend you to try as many dished as you can. It would be nice if you bring many friends and try at least one bite for every dish. But I gurantee you that you will never stop eating because their food is that nice. Especially their oyster! OMG. You must try them. Am I the only one who never had oyster with this kind of amazing sauce on it? Anyway, it was super great!

Went to Sunday brunch here and I loved it! They have a unique take on all the classic brunch dishes. The tigers eye (steak and eggs) and the French toast were truly delicious. I also had a side of brussel sprouts which were packed with flavor. Beautiful place inside too!

Great food and atmosphere. But teedy bit pricy. We got the wings, fried calamari, chicken padThai, beef brisket curry, and crab fried rice. The Pad Thai is good but lacks the sweet and spice which an authentic Pad Thai requires. Blue crab Fried rice was good but was nothing special, charged $20. Beef brisket was our favorite. Service was good but our server was not helpful in choosing items despite knowing it was our first visit. Ambiance was great with having the open kitchen.

Great food! The restaurant itself is pretty loud, and it was very hot inside. We had the raw oyster special, the satay (pork), spring rolls, pad thai ki and jungle curry. Everything was excellent. They even brought us a free bowl of soup! I will be back!

Best Thai food I've had in years of living in the US. Extraordinary balance of sweet and sour. Requested an extra spicy Wagyu Beef Jungle Curry and it came noticeably redder and significantly more spicy than regular. Delicious. Sat at the bar around the open kitchen and watched the food prep all night and I have to say I am impressed with the freshness of ingredients they are using and the skill of the chefs. Besides sitting at the bar, they have large square family style tables and outside, long ones. The ambience is candlelit, lots of wood, modern architecture.

Community style eating establishment. Service was great, beware that when you order food, it may not come out in 'order'. My dinner came out before the app. I was fine with this since the server explained it to me. Flavors are wonderful. Calamari was very good, chili sauce is spicy. Wings very good and not too spicy. Great atmosphere. I sat at the bar and was able to see the kitchen staff in action. Oh, and happy hour is M-F, 3-6 pm, 50% off all alcoholic drinks! Will definitely visit again, I want to check out the patio when the weather is a bit warmer.
