The Best Ice Cream Shops of the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"This ultra-creamy ice cream is available in a rotating selection of creative flavors. The strawberry mascarpone is a masterpiece of fresh-picked berries mixed with a dense, cream base; the black sesame has a nutty flavor and unique gray-purple hue. Grab a pint to take home for later." - Eater Staff

Purple Ice Cream, Sweet Science, and Nellie’s: new ice cream shops - Eater Twin Cities

"Sweet Science’s flavors are extra rich because of actual science. Ashlee Olds found a way to make a denser, richer ice cream and then proceeded to pile in incredible flavors like smoked vanilla honey, rhubarb cinnamon almond, and even some boozy flavors like a Manhattan. Her business was at first a free sample pop-up that quickly attracted a dedicated following. Next came a short-lived scoop, then the move to Keg & Case, now a permanent home in the Nolan Mains development at 3945 Market Street." - Joy Summers

Google
So creamy and tasty! My partner and i shared single split of Hazelnut Brownie and Peach Cobbler. We wanted to get double but it seemed bit big for us. The brownies were chunky and loved the peach pieces in the peach cobbler. Tested Basil flavor and it was okay. I was expecting a more rich basil flavor but could taste vanilla. Staff were friendly and the place was clean. Really want to try affogato next time!

Google
This is the best ice cream and sorbet shop in town. The flavors are so unique and exciting. I really could not decide after tasting all the many VEGAN options. Thank you for making it fun again, to have dessert.

Google
Great ice cream with a bunch of unique flavors. Caught a video a few weeks back on YouTube and learned not only do they take a very natural approach to making their ice cream but they also make all their mix-ins from scratch as well! I loved this about them and it was a big reason I stopped in. I also loved the periodic table display of their flavors, super fun! I ordered the Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookie and the Berry Crumble. The ice cream was creamy and held its texture well. The mix-ins were also super delicious. The little chocolate cookie pieces were great and paired perfectly with the peanut butter. The berries also had a nice strong fruit flavor and I liked the crumble in this one too. I could easily see myself stopping in here monthly to try new flavors.

Google
Our favorite predominantly gluten-free ice cream shoppe. Love having a place that my Celiac husband can feel safe getting ice cream! I'm particularly a fan of the salted caramel ice cream. And the homemade waffle cones are excellent! There's only one table for seating inside, but an ample outdoor area with plenty of seating. Parking is street or ramp parking nearby. Highly recommend!

Google
The ice cream flavors are super unique and very well-done. We got a flight with some really fun flavors, including passionfruit and pineapple passionfruit mango sorbet, as well as berry crumble. We loved all the flavors!

When it comes to ice cream, Sweet Science in Edina truly hits a sweet spot. They've managed to craft something special by focusing on high-quality, natural ingredients, which really makes a difference. You can taste the care that goes into each small batch, and it's clear they're not cutting any corners with artificial additives or corn syrup. What sets Sweet Science apart is their knack for unique flavor combinations. While they have classic offerings, their seasonal and more adventurous flavors are where they really shine. Think combinations like rhubarb cinnamon almond or something unexpected yet delightful. They even make all their own mix-ins, from cookies to sauces, which adds another layer of quality and freshness. The experience of visiting the Edina shop is also quite pleasant. It’s located in a vibrant area, and it feels like a spot where you can genuinely relax and enjoy your treat. For anyone looking for ice cream that's both indulgent and made with integrity, Sweet Science is definitely worth a visit. It might just ruin other ice creams for you, in the best possible way.

Google
A great dessert gem with so many gluten free options and a waffle cone!! Easily labeled and all the toppings are GF. It was so great to have almost too many options!

Google
Loved the cayenne caramel flavor! Only thing is that the sizes are quite small but still really unique flavors and great ice cream quality

Yelp
I forgot to take pictures of our icecream. We came around 5 maybe and there were hardly any people in the vicinity, and it was on a Tuesday. It was kind of hidden, you have to park and walk. I got the rhubarb and the apple crisp in a waffle cone. The waffle cone was not good, hands down the worst waffle cone I've ever had and I absolutely love waffle cones. It was wayyyy to salty and kind of burnt? The apple crisp icecream was also kind of salty, and was more butter flavor in my opinion. The rhubarb was pretty good, but doesn't combine well with the salty apple crisp. The lady was sweet at first, I tried maybe 5 flavors total, only the ones I'd never seen before, and by the second one hee attitude was one of annoyance. You could see it all on her face. When I asked to taste the rhubarb I immediately said yea I'll have that one, and her response was "okay, which one?" With annoyance in her voice...maybe the one I literally just ate off the spoon? Lol she has the wrong temperament to be working in an ice cream shop.

Yelp
Yum yum yum. Some of THE most flavorful ice cream, and their mission is deeply committed to good ingredients. And it shows in the quality of the food, the quality of their team, and the quality of the experience as a whole. They've got little to-go containers of ice cream, and have a rotating selection of flavors. Although they don't have indoor seating, this cute little spot is tucked right next to a public seating area with a nice water feature. Easily the best ice cream I've ever had.

Yelp
The aesthetic of this ice cream shot was on point for how big their space was. Loved that they had seasonal, signature and revolving flavors. Makes it so they have people coming back. Also loved that they had a collaboration flavor with Five Watt Coffee. They had so many flavors that it was perfect that they sold flights of ice cream. Now for what people want to hear about. The review of the flavors I did get. Berry Crumble - loved the cookie pieces in the ice cream, the berries in it tasted fresh but they do get stuck in your teeth like when you eat blackberries and raspberries. The favor was pretty solid. 4/5 Hazelnut Brownie - the hazelnut flavored ice cream was very good. The brownie was nice with every other bite. If it had peanut pieces in it. I would've been even better but then it would've been a Ferrero Rocher 4/5 Five Watt Coffee - if you love coffee ice cream this one was nice and creamy and the coffee flavor was on point. But it go old real fast for me. 4/5 Cayenne Caramel Brownie - your typical caramel brownie ice cream but with a little kick from the cayenne which is a nice little twist in ice cream. 4/5 Stracciatella - I've always loved me a good Stracciatella, and this was it. The twist they had with it adding black raspberry in it was a chef's kiss. 4.5/5

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place forever, and it did not disappoint! We came on a Tuesday around 7, and there was a decent line but it was worth it. Most of the flavors are unique and different, but they do have the basics also. We had all of the seasonal flavors (smores, apple crisp, oatmeal cookie, chai tea) plus cookies and cream. They were amazing!! Some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The flavor is fresh, intense, and real - no artificial taste. The price reflects that, being it was a $18 ice cream flight, but I still think it is worth it for a fun treat :) Ps- get the Carmel apple crisp!!! We got a pint to take home it was so delicious.

Yelp
Kicking myself for not stopping here earlier! We came for a sweet treat after a birthday dinner, and we both agreed it's some of the best ice cream we've had in the Twin Cities. Things to know: - Almost ALL of their flavors are gluten-free! - A variety of signature staples, revolving flavors, and seasonal flavors - The shop is small, with a few benches and one table for seating - plan to take it out and walk - It's tucked away in a walking-only area of 50th and France - park in the parking ramp and enter near Mr. Paul's We had such a hard time choosing flavors - they were all so creative and sounded delicious! As a gluten-free girly, I was shocked and impressed to see flavors like cookies & cream and brownie offered GF. Prices are pretty typical - and honestly for the quality and flavor, it's worth it. The staff member onsite when we visited was so kind and helpful - she was clearly enthusiastic about the flavors and had tried them so she could give accurate recommendations. We opted for: cayenne caramel brownie almond toffee ganache peanut butter chocolate cookie milk and cookies and loved each one! Can't recommend this spot enough.

Yelp
This was some of the best ice cream I have ever had. Super rich and creamy and the flavors tasted real rather than artificial. The scoops are large. It's expensive, but worth it.

Yelp
Great ice cream and even better staff! Sweet Science has amazing ice cream with monthly rotating flavors. I had the peanut butter chocolate cookie ice cream which was delicious. Look forward to going to Sweet Science again!

Yelp
Very nice ice cream shop tucked in Nolan Mains at 50th and France. They use fresh and local ingredients all the ice cream is always good. They've got 4-5 flavors that rotate monthly to reflect any holidays or the season. Everyone has always been super friendly and willing to answer questions or give samples. The shop is tiny with only a few seats so plan to sit outside or take it to go. Their waffle cones are made fresh right behind the register and are some of the best I've ever had. Highly recommend trying them out.

Yelp
Some of the best ice cream I think I've ever had. They have a rotating panel of flavors and it's beautiful and clean inside. You can also buy a flight (probably to share) and pints! The price is no joke, but frankly it's worth it and it's inline with other places nearby. Our favorite was the Salted Caramel. I also loved the Spicy Brownie Caramel flavor (I've probably got the name slightly wrong.)

Yelp
Spring sunshine finally popping out inspired us to visit today and we will definitely be back! Such a fun concept, the menu is set up like a periodic table with rotating seasonal flavors. We decided to try a flight of five because we couldn't choose just one. Of the five flavors, my favorite was definitely the Coffee Caramel Cookie - such strong coffee flavor! We lucked out and they had a flavor we wanted to try in their freezer for to go, the dragon fruit lemonade sorbet. It is one of their February flavors and it is so perfectly tart, bright pink, and studded with little seeds - Perfection! The space is a bit small for dine in, but very clean and the staff were friendly and patient while we chose our flavors. This spot is definitely going to be a popular stop in the warmer months! It is located in a really cute area with a ton of shops and other restaurants on 50th and France. Perfect for a summer stroll :) Free parking across the street was a nice bonus!

Yelp
We actually go to Sweet Science pretty regularly, as it has become our favorite Ice Cream stop in the Twin Cities. Located in the shopping complex around 50th street and France Avenue in Edina, this place has the best ice cream I've ever tasted!!! I know this is slightly sacrilegious, as I'm from Wisconsin, but the flavors are well thought out and really pop. The first flavor that I ever had was the Apple Cider Crumble and I was hooked. It's seasonal, but since it's fall come check it out! The best part is that almost all the flavors are Gluten Free, which is really awesome since one of my daughter's and I have Celiac's Disease. They list all the flavors in a periodic table format, which is clever and fun, and only a handful of flavors have gluten, nuts, etc., so this place is very friendly for people with food allergies. On this particular trip (with the pictures I posted), we got the Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Mango Sorbet, which had the most fresh and beautifully sharp taste I've ever experienced with Ice Cream. My other daughter (with Celiac's) loves the combination of Berry Crumble on the bottom and Peanut Butter Chocolate Cookie on top, both within their tasty Gluten-Free Waffle Cone. I love the sharpness of Rhubarb, so went with the Rhubarb-Cinnamon-Almond and was NOT disappointed. I was flying solo this trip, so was having some trouble wrangling all the cones and dishes, when one of the workers offered to help me carry the ice cream to my car. While I stubbornly carried on, as ridiculous dads do, they were super sweet to offer. The staff is always super friendly and patient, as one simply has to try the flavors first... :) Another Wisconsin fail that I have is that I don't even really like ice cream that much, but if the fam wants to head to Sweet Science I'm ALL IN!!! If you're in the mood for ice cream and / or need to refresh yourself from some intense Edina shopping, I HIGHLY recommend stopping by Sweet Science!

Yelp
Stopped here for some dessert and decided to get a flight to try a few flavors! Berry Crumble was my favorite! The hubby decided on taking home a pint of the Dragon Fruit Lemonade sorbet and I'm so happy he did because oh my gosh it was so good. It's tart and sweet and it was gone in 2 days. They also have dog treats which I thought was nice! They had a neat wall of ice cream scooper decor that I thought was so cool and unique! We waited no more than 2 minutes in line and the server was kind enough to give us recommendations since we weren't sure what flavors to choose from since there's so many!

Yelp
Delicious Ice cream bar. All natural and you can seriously taste the ingredients in the flavors. Our kids are pretty much the vanilla and chocolate type of kiddos, however they loved all the flavors we chose them! Even the sherbet. We are going to have to return to try the Horchata and the cinnamon honey next! Awesome customer service as well! Thanks again!

Yelp
First time visiting here and they have quite the selection of ice creams. My husband and I decided to sample a few before selecting what ice creams we wanted to share together since we did a big bowl 2-scoop. We went with Rhubarb Cinnamon Almond and Caramel Apple Cider Crisp. The first was an 8/10 because there wasn't ribbons of flavor throughout it. I found that I was often eating just vanilla without any of the flavors mixed in so definitely could have been mixed better. The latter was a 10/10, so freaking good! I appreciated how it actually tasted like an apple crisp with lots of "crisp" chunks and ribbons of caramel throughout. This flavor I'd get again and again hands down. This business is in a prime location as well. Fun to visit here if you take a stroll in the area and then want a sweet treat after. I can imagine the line being long to order at times, when we came it was out the door and there was only 10 minutes until close. So limited space inside and long lines could make some folks not try this but I encourage you to give this yummy shop a try. They even have a spoon photo op wall which is quite fun!

Yelp
If you're in the Edina area then this place is a must try!! I got the flight which is 5 different flavors and it's perfect for those that can't make up their mind and want to try a bunch of them, my all time fav is the coffee flavor. This can also be shared with a few others too. There are no seating inside but plenty of seating area outside! Free 3 hour parking ramp attached.
google avatar

Natalie Y.

Yelp
A very solid ice cream place with experimental flavors and fast and attentive service! I got the coffee flavor and it was scrumptious! Their flavors remind me a little bit if Salt and Straw and a traditional American creamery had a child- but guess what?! I like this place better than both salt and straw or traditional creamery. A gem of a find in Edina
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy!! I have the biggest sweet tooth and found out that there is an actual storefront for this! I've never actually tasted a single flavor before, but I've heard the term "Sweet Science" for awhile now! The storefront is pretty small and really more of like a take-and-go type of place. They have their signature flavors and their seasonal flavors and are currently offering samples if you wanted to taste before you buy! My group all got different flavors to try out and I ended up picking sweet corn blueberry to try! I love anything corn so I thought why not! The flavor is different than what I had imagined but not a bad flavor. It tasted like blended up cream of corn with blueberry syrup mixed throughout. The texture was very nice and creamy. I enjoyed my Lil Guy scoop of it but would probably not try again. Other flavors that I tried were: passion fruit and almond toffee ganache. The passion fruit flavor was super delicious and different! I liked the tartness but also the creaminess of it all. Almond toffee ganache will be the reason for my return. It was soo good and had bits of toffee mixed throughout. I appreciate how smooth and creamy all of the ice cream picks were and definitely love the unique flavors here! Can't wait to come back!

Alex N.

Yelp
You can get it at the store. Go to a small business ice cream shop instead. Favors were not that varied nor did they taste good.

Yelp
First time visiting, and I liked the pleasant vibe. Good customer service; she was very patient while we tasted a few samples to decide. Good collection of flavors including vegan and gluten-free with neat ingredients. They are eco-friendly with compostable cups and steel sample spoons. I stop by to grab a small cone but ended up buying three cups and two pints for to-go. Loved it and highly recommend it.

Yelp
My wife and I were sitting in our hot house on a hot July day. She turns to me and said, "I need ice cream!" She had no argument from me and 30 seconds later I was googling creameries near me. We found Sweet Science Ice Cream was less than 2 miles. Halfway though my question which was to be innocently inquiring whether we should simply walk there, my wife looked at me with those "don't-you-dare-finish-that-question" eyes and we happily drove to Sweet Science (in our air conditioned car) accompanied by our two (also hot) doggos. The ice cream and sorbet flavors are creatively and intelligently displayed like the periodic table. Upon discovery that they HAD sorbet (double chocolate sorbet no less) I was SOLD. I was too hot for ice cream. (did I mention the weather was hot?) My wife held the dogs on leash outside while I ordered, paid and emerged with our sorbets. My review In a single word is: HOLYCOWWASTHISGOOD. *FULL* flavors and delicious everything from the sorbet to the cone. (Our dogs agreed by the way and gave it four paws up) This is ABSOLUTELY worth the trip (Just don't ask if you should walk there on a hot day)
google avatar

Tessa B.

Yelp
We parked in the free parking ramp across the street from the ice cream shop. They had a sign on the sidewalk that was easy to spot directing us to the door. When we entered, the 2 women working behind the counter were very friendly and offered samples and explained each flavor in detail. I was able to request 2 different flavors in one dish (cookies & cream and salted caramel) and it was fabulous. In addition there was a wall with ice cream scoops that made for a fun photo op! They do not have seating in the store, but there is a nice patio area outside. They open at 4pm during the week and 11am on Saturdays.

Morgan H.

Yelp
Such good ice cream, loved the vanilla mint fudge. Will definitely come back regularly!

Yelp
Amazing ice cream with an array of unique flavors you won't find just anywhere. Lovely patio outside. Really nice customer service.

Yelp
Sweet Science Ice Cream is some of my favorite ice cream in Minnesota. You can taste the quality of ingredients and they are never short on creative flavors. Staff is always great and you can get cups, cones and even pints to go. You can even sample flavors before you buy. I highly recommend following them on social media so you can see the new flavors they release each month.

Yelp
A delicious addition to "downtown" Edina. We've visited several times now and have enjoyed all the flavors. The menu of this "science-themed" spot is arranged like the periodic table you remember from High School chemistry except the categories are a bit different - "seasonal favorites" (like blueberry or sweet corn) "rotating classics" and "everyday choices" (like chocolate). The flavors are inventive and like all places you can have a dish, cake cone, "sugar cone" or their delicious house made waffle cone. You can also get a mini size, regular scoop, 2 mini scoops of two different flavors or a double with regular scoops for the hearty appetite. I like the 2-mini in a waffle cone. Loved the caramel swirl and the chocolate truffle ice creams. Also enjoyed the seasonal white chocolate raspberry on a previous visit. This is probably our new favorite spot - although its a bit hidden away. Best strategy is to park in the new ramp behind the new condos then walk across the street. You'll find the shop tucked back next to a hidden square with a fireplace. Definitely worth a visit.

Karla S.

Yelp
THE BEST ice cream in the cities by far! Organic, clean ingredients and amazing flavors. So tasty!
google avatar

Kirk H.

Yelp
Good ice cream shop, with some interesting flavors and good creamy ice cream. You can't go wrong stopping here. The flavors are not as inventive as some places, but the ice cream is very well made, and very tasty.

Heidi C.

Yelp
So fun! We ordered a Flight of 5 flavors. Good value and the ice cream is amazing. Young people working there take pride in their job and are super friendly.
google avatar

Tarra G.

Yelp
Really great ice cream! The selections are unique, the quality is really good, and the prices are on par with other shops. The store is a little hidden and small, but worth it!

Yelp
Difficult to find if you go strictly by Google. It's located in a little plaza-like area off street. Couldn't find parking on street, so we parked in the ramp across the street. Went with the kids for an ice cream cone on a hot Saturday night. We were excited to try all the cool flavors and vegan options. The line was out the door in this small shop, so we figured we were in for a treat! The options were great, from Raspberry Rose, to Coffee Toffee, several sorbets and a vegan chocolate chip. We all liked that there was an option to split a single scoop in two 2 smaller scoops, but the prices were a bit steep for the portions- about $6 for a small-ish dish. The scoopers didn't do a great job with the double scoops though... my teen daughter lost her top scoop, and then we saw another customer lose his as well. The flavors were all good; I loved the Salted Caramel, and liked the Rhubarb Almond Cinnamon too, despite the fact that I was searching for the Cinnamon in it. All in all, it was good, but probably won't be back due to location and prices.
google avatar

Wren A.

Yelp
The service was pretty quick and the employees were very kind. The ice cream is amazing, and they have so many flavors! They have many options and toppings. They even sell their own ice cream in pints. I came here the other day with my family, we all loved it, and would gladly come back. My brother's been waiting for this ice cream for about a month now, and the wait was so worth it.
google avatar

Krin B.

Yelp
If you love waffle cones, try this ice cream shop because they are excellent. Nice and crunchy without being crumbly, and also gluten free. I've only tried one flavor and that was very good as well. A small shoot with limited indoor seating but a great outdoor courtyard directly adjacent.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Love the variety of unique ice cream flavors available here! I'd recommend the berry crumble. They also have flights available where you can try several different flavors. There's also an underground parking lot with free 3 hour parking in the complex the shop is located in.

Greg N.

Yelp
Thank you for taking impeccable care of our nut-allergic son and for having truly phenomenal ice cream. We will be back!

Tanner S.

Yelp
Can't recommend this place enough! Awesome flavor selection on the ice cream (mostly gluten free with vegan options as well) plus delicious gluten-free cones, and great service! The rhubarb cinnamon almond, chai tea, and apple cider caramel apple crisp are phenomenal.
