Where To Get Late-Night Desserts In Atlanta

"Open until 11pm, Sunday-Thursday | 12am, Friday & Saturday  Located near the GSU campus, Sweet Stack may single-handedly be responsible for raising a few GPAs. When you need an immediate sugar rush, the ice cream here is super sweet. And it’s open late when you need to level up before a midnight study session. For the ultimate dopamine boost, get their famous ice cream donut sandwich. Your choice of ice cream is squished between two glazed donut halves, warmed in a panini maker, then topped with caramel syrup and cereal. " - jacinta howard, juli horsford, nina reeder

11 Best Ice Cream Shops In Atlanta

"If you’re a night owl with a sweet tooth, SweetStack Creamery on Auburn Avenue is your spot since they’re open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Fair warning, if you order anything blue, you might sport a Smurf-like mouth for the next 36 hours. For a less intense sugar rush, opt for mellow flavors like butter pecan or vanilla. If you really want to reach the peaks of Mt. Glucose, get the ice cream donut sandwich—your choice of ice cream pressed between two glazed donut halves that are gently warmed in a panini maker and then drizzled with caramel syrup and cereal topping. Sweet Stack Creamery - Review - Downtown Atlanta - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Perfect for Georgia State students and night owls (it’s open until midnight on Friday and Saturday), Sweet Stack Creamery on Auburn Avenue is an easy spot to satisfy your sugar cravings. A heads-up: this ice cream is super sweet. Order anything blue, like the Cookie Monster, and you might sport a Smurf-like mouth for the next 36 hours. For a less intense sugar rush, opt for mellow flavors like butter pecan or vanilla, or order a soft, delicious chocolate chip cookie sans ice cream. And if you really want to reach the peaks of Mt. Glucose, get the ice cream donut sandwich—your choice of ice cream pressed between two glazed donut halves that are gently warmed in a panini maker and then topped with caramel syrup and cereal. photo credit: Amy Sinclair photo credit: Amy Sinclair photo credit: Amy Sinclair" - Jacinta Howard

Google
This place is GREAT. I had experienced my first ice cream donut sandwich in LA prior to my visit, so I was super excited to see if I could find something similar around me. And I DID! The employees were so nice and the sandwich was absolutely delicious. The perfect sugar high.

Google
It was a very intimate space with sweet ladies working in there!! They were super kind and friendly. We parked at a lot nearby and walked over. I got the doughnut sandwich with salted caramel ice cream topped with Cinnamon Toast Crunch and m&ms. It was DELICIOUS!!

Google
We went there for the Krabby Pattie Kollab and we were pleasantly surprised. For a small shop downtown, the ice cream and donut were amazing. There's nowhere to sit so just know going in that you have to stand or take it with you.

Google
Great overall experience. Only issue was the milkshake machine seem to be out when I visited. I hope it isn’t a regular thing here. Great tasting ice cream, some vegan options, and service was fast. Got a sweet tooth right now? Can’t go wrong here and it doesn’t break the bank.

Google
This place was very clean looking inside. The young lady who waited on us was knowledgeable about the ice cream I asked about. And the pictures/artistry where very nice inside. The ice cream itself was very good. I got 3 scoops, Black Panther, Let The Man Go, and Vegan Vanilla. I Love the fact that this place is Black 🖤 Owned....keep up the good work and stay strong..💚❤️🖤💪🏾👍🏾✊🏾

Google
I was visiting my daughter at her College and wanted some ice cream so I searched for ice cream near me and this place came up. When I mentioned the name to her she said that a lot of the students go there and have said that the ice cream is pretty good. Being that I love ice cream I was quite excited about having ice cream that was so close to us but more importantly the fact that their website mentioned vegan ice cream. I'm not 100% vegan but I do prefer vegan options. Vegan ice cream is hard to come by, or should I say good vegan ice cream is hard to come by. We were greeted when we walked in, they offered samples of what we wanted to try, everyone was friendly. The only two negative things I can note is that two of the employees were having a personal conversation and they continue to have that conversation while we were selecting our ice cream and paying for our order, they were not the same employees that were assisting us but I could definitely hear their conversation and knew that it was not work related. The other small thing is that they were a little bit slow with getting our ice cream, but it wasn't that big of a deal. The vegan mango ice cream was absolutely delicious. It didn't taste artificial or overly icy, it was nice and fruity and smooth. I also got some chocolate chip cookies and to my surprise they were actually very good. On my next visit I'm looking forward to trying another flavor and getting more cookies lol. Both of my daughters got traditional ice cream and they enjoyed their selections as well.

Google
I like this place. The ice cream was really good, and the vibe is pretty dope. Service was pretty slow, but it's still a little chilly and not peak spring/summer, so I didn't expect more then one person there. They have these little ice cream sandwich things that make that are pretty good, but completely impractical. I'll definitely swing back around when summer's in full swing.

Google
I have to say that this is one of the best ice cream places I have ever been to. The employees are amazing, and they live up to there name. I tried every ice cream they have and everything was beyond amazing. I can't wait to come back here when I visit ATL again!!

Yelp
I wasn't expecting much from this creamery, but I walked away incredibly surprised. I got the bourbon truffle (or something like that) and the Cuban coffee cream -- and they were delicious on their own, but paired great together. A friend of mine got two scoops of the vegan lemon and it was perfectly tart. This place is small and there aren't very many places to sit, but it's very easy to walk in, order, and go on a brisk walk with your delicious, creamy sweet treat.

Yelp
NICE CREAM! A black owned ice cream shop right down the road from GSU. The whole street is what we like to call "resturant row" there is so many options all walking distance from one another. I promised my partner I would buy him ice cream and we decided on this business as it was fairly close to our hotel. Once we came inside we were told about their donut ice cream sandwich. Though that sounded delicious it also sounded like a LOT of food. We each got a scoop. My partner got praline and I got the Cuban coffee ice cream. We each got a different topping on top too. Don't get me wrong it was a good spot with flavorful cream. However, there was no seating inside. This is a need especially since a lot of tourists come around this area for food. I wasn't super impressed by this ice cream experience.
google avatar

Laks P.

Yelp
I got the ice scream sandwich with mvp and and bourbon truffle flavors and it was a good combination. The mvp had chocolate covered peanut butter bites. They had a good amount of flavors and would love to try some of the more fruity flavors here as well. The service was super friendly. There wasn't that many options for seating. It's more like a place where you can grab and go. The only down side is that the area where it is located was a little scary at night when I went. There were a couple homeless people outside and there is a parking deck right next to the location but we just parked right outside the store on the street so that we could keep an eye on the car.
google avatar

Kelly C.

Yelp
We were a party of 3, single scoop and 2 cookie/ice cream sandwiches. We all got different flavored and they were all good. The staff was kind behind the counter.

Donald B.

Yelp
The service could be better, but the ice cream was great, the inside of the ice cream shops was cute. No parking no seating. But it was cool.

Yelp
My kids were able to find their favorite flavors and seemed happy with their treats BUT... I did not go into the business. The closest parking was a block away and before I was fully parked, a guy rode over to my vehicle on a scooter and started telling me how terrible this parking lot was and pointed out the two other vehicles already booted. Scooter man proceeded to ask me if I ever help out the homeless and asked for cash, and had a hard time accepting my no answer. Across the street from the public parking lot is John Calhoun Park. I noticed numerous homeless sleeping in the shade and another covered in a wheelchair next to the street. My initial thought was to find another ice cream option because I didn't feel comfortable leaving my vehicle and walking a couple blocks over to Sweet Stacks. My daughters (ages 6 & 7) had been drinking lots of water because it was a hot day and had to pee really bad. I circled the block and let the girls out, my oldest was able to handle payment. To our dismay, the bathrooms at Sweet Stack are for employees only. My idea of a fun treat was very underwhelming. Sweet Stack might be more of a locals only shop.

Yelp
Excellent ice cream. Rich and creamy and super flavorful. Staff were nice and let us try lots of flavors. Highly recommended!

Yelp
The pros: Good portion size and a variety of flavors - they also have a good selection of vegan ice cream for anyone that has dietary restrictions. Lady serving us was so patient and kind! Sweet dreams was really good, especially for fruit flavor lovers. Go ahead and pass on the mango flavor - it's vegan so it has a more icy texture and the flavor isn't that strong. Got it to accomodate a friend but would've gone for the caramel praline otherwise. The cons: Pricing is unclear and maybe even a little deceptive? Could've sworn that the menu said $4.15 for a small cup and was told that I could have up to two scoops. When I got to checkout it seemed like you had to pay for the cup plus $1 for each scoop, so my total was coming out to $6.15 pre-tax. To me this pricing model makes no sense and if it's posted, it's not clear/visible. If a place says that I can get up to two flavors with my size, I'm expecting two smaller scoops of two diff flavors or one large scoop of a single flavor. In hindsight, perhaps their pricing model is a flat $4.15 for the cup + $1 for each scoop, and you can get up to 4 scoops (so cup size doesn't matter) Either way, pricing is not super clear in my opinion. Also the parking at night here is a little sketch - I get it, it's downtown, but just throwing that out there. Pricing aside, this is a solid place for ice cream

Yelp
It's a cute, after date spot. They have vegan options which was great for me. We were served quickly and the samples were the perfect size.

Yelp
Really good ice cream & customer service. Sweet ladies the day I came in. Thank you while in the ATL.

Yelp
Loved sweet stack. I ubered and it was easy to find. They let me sample flavors and I decided on birthday cake. I got the donut sandwich and it was so good, definitely could've shared between two adults. They have standing room inside but no seating. I would definitely come back and try other flavors. Also the staff was super friendly
google avatar

Denise B.

Yelp
This place is super cute and has a good variety of ice cream flavors. I had a half scoop of the bourbon truffle and the açaí berry, deconstructed cookie sandwich style.
google avatar

Dee S.

Yelp
Service was great. We visited the shop looking for a dessert. Donuts and ice cream went hand in hand. You can't go wrong. The two girls were super friendly. I wish there was a spot to sit and eat.
google avatar

Yelp
This was one of the only dessert shops within walking distance of us on Sunday night, and we were desperately looking for some sweets, and so...to Sweet-Stack we went. They have ice cream (including vegan), ice cream sandwiches (cookie, donuts), shakes, etc. There's a cute Instagram-friendly wall for you to show off your creation if you want. The staff worked efficiently and promptly, though idk if I'd say they were super friendly. No great loss though -- it was getting late, around 10 PM. I get it, lol. We were both a little on edge because the walk over honestly didn't feel super safe (downtown is surprisingly sparse at night, we learned) so we just grabbed the simplest ice cream we wanted. I wound up with a chocolate ice cream that had peanut butter swirl, while husband got two flavors -- the real MVP (basically death by chocolate) and a cookies and cream type flavor. I thought the price was reasonable for the price and portion size. The lid on my husband's ice cream wasn't attached correctly and he wound up dripping some on a new hoodie, so watch out for that. We both enjoyed our ice cream. It's pretty thick, fairly creamy, and not too sweet. Good amount of peanut butter swirl in my chocolate peanut butter. I think I had the best pick of the three flavors, but it's also down to personal preference. I'd return to try other flavors or to reorder the same one.

Yelp
I first tried Sweet-Stack at the Dessert Wars festival a few months ago, and it was my favorite treat I sampled at the festival. I've been wanting to visit their storefront ever since, and we stopped by last weekend just prior to closing. My husband was waiting in the car outside so I felt a little under pressure to order fast, and they weren't doing samples, which made it hard to decide! I ordered a donut ice cream sandwich with Cookie Monster ice cream. It was really tasty, but I wish I would have ordered a topping on it. They also have cookie sandwiches that look really good too! I've never heard of donut ice cream sandwiches before Sweet-Stack. The donut is warm and the ice cream is still cold / not melty. I would recommend stopping by if you're in the area!

Yelp
I'm a fan of trying any dessert with a twist! Sweet Stack Creamery did not let me down! After seeing that they had an activated charcoal ice cream, I knew I had to put this place on my to visit list. Then I saw the names of the flavors and knew I'd be making a trip same day! I took my kids, because what child doesn't want ice cream?! I ordered the charcoal flavor, called Black Panther. It also has coconut flavor and vanilla wafers crushed in! 10/10 My son ordered chocolate, but I can't remember the name. My daughter ordered the Amber Rose which is cotton candy with pop rocks! They don't have kid scoops so it was almost $5 for each of our single scoops. They also have a wide selection of toppings to add and make creations like donut sandwiches!
google avatar

Sarah-Bradley D.

Yelp
Unfortunately this was a no for us. It's been on my list for awhile but is a hike so we finally made the trip yesterday. Parking is located in the garage right before the shop (free) and staff weren't exactly warm or welcoming making for a weird vibe. Their COVID protocols are still fully in place- only four allowed inside, no indoor dining, masks required and no samples so just things to be prepared for when you go. They will sell you a mask for $1 if you forget yours. We weren't super hungry so chose to not do the donut but did get a waffle bowl. We got the amber rose (cotton candy), bday cake and Cookie Monster and honestly were disappointed by all three flavors. I'm unsure if they make their ice cream fresh in house, I couldn't find out for certain on the site, but it tasted identical to Herseys brand ice cream and there were big chunks of ice throughout. The Cookie Monster was the biggest disappointment with our scoop only containing two pieces of cookie dough and a portion of one Oreo, it essentially was just vanilla was food coloring. We really wanted to love this stop but unfortunately the ice cream looks better than it tastes.
google avatar

Jasmine W.

Yelp
Delicious . Quiet place with great flavors . My son loved the Cookie Monster with the donut bun . Service was great and establishment was very clean .
google avatar

Nicola L.

Yelp
I feel like an OG...wait there's a reason for that...I had the OG from the sweet stack. 2 scoops of Oreo ice cream, with warm fudge on top. Oh yeah!!! Now, even though the ice cream was heavenly here's some stuff to be mindful of. It is in downtown Atlanta in the auburn area. So you will have to find parking on the road. They open late, midnight to be exact. Also, on 4 customers allowed in at a time. So be ready for a wait. The staff are helpful and nice, but be clear about what you want. I hate to say it but they seem a little distracted. Awesome spot and nice flavor listings.
google avatar

Saunsarae M.

Yelp
I was on Google looking for nearby ice cream and this Black owned establishment came up with pics of black ice cream!!! I had find out. I got the smaller cup that includes 1-2 scoops. I choose the green tea (great, crisp flavor) and cuban coffee cream (full but not overpowering flavor). I really wanted to sample the black ice cream "BlackPanther" so I got a small touch on top. I don't like coconut but it was GOOD! The place is small and no seating at this time. There is a parking lot but it was not well lit. Nonetheless, I will definite be back. They have great tasting, original flavors. I really like that the ice cream is not overly sweet.
google avatar

Alan M.

Yelp
This place is open relatively late, which is a plus. The food however, was sub-par for me. I got the Donut Sweet Stack with mint chip ice cream and Oreo crumbles on top. I'll start with the donut itself. The donut was already precut when they were making it in front of me and honestly tasted kind of stale. The ice cream was just okay and Oreos are ... Well, Oreos. I would pass on this place in favor of other dessert places if you aren't in the city for long. I gave it an extra star because it's visually appealing.
google avatar

Tisha J.

Yelp
I love this place and go regularly. The servers are very kind and the flavors are so delicious! My only complaint was going up there this evening, and two girls were sitting behind the counter chatting while I knocked trying to figure out why the door was locked. They didn't even acknowledge me but I finally noticed a handwritten note on the door that said "Be right back. On break." No time of return. So I sat in the car for a few minutes hoping it's reopen soon. Still nothing, and decided to leave. I recommend adding a time of return so customers can be aware. Anyway, enjoy a photo of a past experience.
google avatar

Steve V.

Yelp
We came here on a weekend and it was pretty quiet. We were the only ones in the store when we got there and there was no hanging out inside allowed, so we ordered and got out. They were also not doing samples, which was a bummer because their flavor selection was awesome. They had some vegan options as well and the names of the flavors are funny. We got the Cookie Monster, which as you might suspect, was blue with bits or Oreo. The Cuban Coffee Cream was my favorite and had such a good texture! You got a decent amount with each order for the price. Parking was in the small garage next to the shop and they only have a few designated spots and it is tight, but we had no problems. If you're in the area, it is worth a stop by.
google avatar

Mari S.

Yelp
2nd time was a charm! 1st time to attempted to visit this location it was closed. Finally got to try the donut ice cream combo with Cuban coffee ice cream. So worth the wait. The ice cream was creamy and they even warm up the donut ice cream for you! Delish. My only complaint is the location and parking is not so convenient so we took it to go and ate in truck- Happily!
google avatar

Asia E.

Yelp
Great ice cream at this downtown gem! They make ice cream sandwiches, brownie sundaes waffle cones and more. On the recommendation of the staff i chose the dirty bird flavor which is also my favorite it was pretty good just wish it had more pecans in it and also had a scoop of the strawberry cheesecake ice cream that was sooo good! Definitely would recommend stopping by if you're in the downtown area for dessert
google avatar

Alicia C.

Yelp
Came here for the charcoal ice cream specifically and it did not disappoint. We found that the street parking by the library was the most convenient free parking we could find at the time. We went on a Sunday. I got: - Black Panther - activated charcoal, coconut, and vanilla wafers - Green Tea - matcha flavored Loved both of them, and thought the slight bitterness in matcha balanced out the sweet coconut and vanilla wafers in the black panther flavor. Portions are generous and I actually had to save some for another day. Currently inside is closed for dine in, so we got the ice cream in cups to go. Would definitely love to come here again sometime to try their impressive looking ice cream sandwiches, and check out more of their flavors.
google avatar

Aashima M.

Yelp
Had a chocolate flavor vegan ice cream at the booth they were running during the Atlanta run club event. Really liked it. Would love to visit the store and explore more options.
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
The ice cream was delicious! I got a cookie sandwich and my teen went with the donut sandwich. They made sure to give plenty of toppings with each! The ladies were very sweet as well!
google avatar

Dazziyah M.

Yelp
This place was awesome! Loved the I cream flavors. I got the fruity pebble icecream with fruity pebbles inside. Ugh! The best thing ever! Tasted exactly like fruity pebbles. My boyfriend who is lactose intolerant got a vanilla icecream that was vegan. (glad they had that option) He added some of his favorite toppings and thought it was really good too. Definitely gotta go back! Covid friendly! No seating inside
google avatar

Sherri W.

Yelp
This place has cool ice cream flavors and is Black owned. Parking was convenient and right next door.

Yelp
My niece is vegan and found this spot that had vegan ice cream options. Of course we had to check it out. We decided to go following a late dinner on a Friday night. I called to find out what time they closed and they advised midnight. This shop is in the same plaza as Pizza Hut and Moe's. There is a parking garage attached to the building so no need to worry about finding parking on the street. The inside of this spot is so cute. There are several murals providing places to get a good social media shot! The ice cream flavors are all displayed in cases. I appreciate the fact that they decided to give unique names to the ice cream like Amber Rose, Black Panther and Chocolate Fetish. They offer 3 vegan flavors: French Press, Let The Man Go, and Vanilla. One thing to note about the vegan options is that all of them contain cashew. My niece failed to realize this. She indicated that she is not a fan of cashew milk so she did not enjoy her ice cream. I tried the black panther. It was different from any other ice cream I have tried. It was not very sweet, which I actually enjoyed. It was good, but not great. However, I would give them another try if I am in the area in the future.
google avatar

Shcera B.

Yelp
Everything was good except I would of preferred the brownie and donut was cooked fresh but it was cool
google avatar

Vanessa T.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream and nice murals! It was our first time and the workers were really nice even taking pics of us with the murals! The Amber Rose ice cream is really good! It is a cotton candy flavor with pop rocks.

K1ng Siah

Yelp
The workers are rude and disrespectful. They charge extra to have my brownie on the side. They need to improve their attitude if they want to move forward in life.
google avatar

Siri P.

Yelp
My friend and I visited Sweet Stack on a random weekday night when we were in the downtown Atlanta area. We tried a bunch of the flavors and eventually settled on a raspberry chocolate flavor. The staff was so sweet and were very helpful in choosing what to get. It's creamier than most ice creams and the flavors are very good!!
google avatar

Shae S.

Yelp
My daughter liked her "post" Prom shake a lot and the customer service was great!! She wanted it mentioned that she'd definitely come again!!

J P.

Yelp
We walked about 20 mins to this place from our hotel. The area is not the best but there is a streetcar stop right across the street. The ice cream was good and the service was super friendly. The prices were not horrible. We took the streetcar out.
google avatar

Dayana V.

Yelp
Came to ATL to visit a friend who suggested I try this ice cream shop. There were two female workers, both of whom were pretty nice and the ice cream was amazing.
google avatar

Jenn S.

Yelp
Really cute ice cream shop with a fun idea of eating ice cream not just the conventional in a cone kind of way, although you can get it that way as well here. They also offer stacking their delicious cold confections between your choice of brownie, cookies or DOUGHNUTS! Plus sample tastings of each flavor is encouraged and I love that they offer 2 choices for vegan ice "cream" fees as well. Big shout out to Kenny, Kevin and Pi for all around great customer service and warm southern charm as they helped us pick out the best combo for our sweet tooth. Will most definitely be back soon.
google avatar

Jacklyn K.

Yelp
Love the coffee ice cream in a waffle cone!! The birthday cake ice cream seriously missed and the pieces of cake inside were the strangest texture and the flavor is sickly sweet. My husband had a donut ice cream sandwich with the black panther ice cream and it was just OK- the presentation was AWFUL and the logistics of eating it is a nightmare lol. It's also very overpriced in my opinion! Probably wouldn't go back
google avatar

Tari O.

Yelp
So glad I had the chance to stop by this addition to the downtown scene! This ice cream shop specializes in making sweet stacks which are ice cream sandwiches made with cookies or donuts. The cookies and donuts are delicious all by themselves. The ice cream is amazing! Proceeds benefit community benefit programs. Highly recommend the cookie dough and the black panther. Yelpers get a free scoop!
google avatar

Paige A.

Yelp
Not sure what happened here. Arrived at 7:06. Five people in line. One family inside. It's 7:32 and only one more couple has gone through. There are at least two people working inside. I truly don't understand. Would have loved to try it out but we are on track to wait a hour for ice cream on a Sunday night. Edit: added 1 star because we finally got ice cream at 7:50. They weren't serving milkshakes and there wasn't any signage to explain options. I saw someone get a donut(?) but I don't know how you'd know the options with nothing listed. The plain ice cream was good but not a 40 minute wait for two scoops. Oh well.
google avatar

Jane Y.

Yelp
I must have come when I was in desperate need of ice cream because the last couple of times it was sticky and gross. And lacked so much flavor. I discussed this with a friend who told me that makes sense because they use blue bunny ice cream. It's a shame because I could go buy a whole tub from Kroger for the samee price
google avatar

Arline B.

Yelp
I felt very safe coming sweet stack. Social distancing is enforced and everyone is required to wear a mask. We tried a variety of ice-cream. My favorite was the praline icecream donut sandwich. We also tried cookies and cream and strawberry. I really came to try the black panther but they were out.
google avatar

Liz T.

Yelp
I went here after work one day just because I had a craving for something sweet- I had no idea what I was walking into! Sweet Stack has unique and delicious flavors and they will put any of these flavors into a cookie, brownie, or doughnut sandwich. You can't get any better than that! I got cereal milk ice cream with fruity pebbles as a topping in between two donuts. The staff was friendly and suggested this pairing to me since it was my first time - I was not disappointed. If I'm ever in the area again, ill definitely be bax
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Yummmm!!! What a fun idea-- A donut ice cream sandwich! We stopped by after leaving a Braves game to eat in the car on the way home! They were closing soon and only letting 4 people in at a time due to covid, but there weren't too many people there so we went right in! The staff was super friendly! Unfortunately, they weren't doing ice cream samples-- so sad! I got the classic donut as a bun with cookie dough ice cream in the middle! So tasty! The donut was a little dry and maybe a bit stale, but kind of what I expected when going right before closing! Overall delicious and would love to come back when the donuts are fresh!

Rebecca N.

Yelp
Literally one of the most creative and delicious ice cream places I've had! One of the owners served me. He was extremely nice, let me try samples and explained everything in detail. The vibes were cool and chill!

I am so glad I found this dessert spot while in Atlanta. My friends and I were craving a delicious dessert following dinner. We were all very happy with our decision to go to Sweet Stack. Basically you choose a donut and then the ice cream flavors that you want sandwiched in between. I ordered the glazed donut with two scoops (one mint chocolate chip and the other chocolate). It was enough for 2 people to share. I shared with 3 people because we were still slightly full from dinner. I really enjoyed my donut sandwich and would highly recommend this place to anyone who would like to eat their ice cream in a unique way. They also offer normal ice cream sandwiches with cookies instead of a donut.
