The Best Portland Restaurants on Northeast Broadway | Eater Portland

"Come for the casual, friendly atmosphere, stay for the mason jar cocktails at Broadway’s revered Swift Lounge. $12 cocktails served in 32-oz mason jars — bigger than a Big Gulp — make it advisable to walk, bus, or cab to Swift. Those looking for a slower libational experience can opt for affordable beers and wines, as well as more traditionally constructed cocktails. The food menu doesn’t offer any surprises but the bar staples like the fried chicken sandwich and mac and cheese are lovingly prepared and filling. Swift can get lively on Fridays and Saturday nights." - Nathan Williams

Very chill, good service, and some great cocktails. Garlic bread was wonderful. Mac and cheese was delicious. Highly recommend

Google
Best food on broadway. Meatloaf Monday is the best! Empanads wonderful and Nate's Chicken rivals any chicken dish in the city!

Google
This place is a ripoff, and the food quality is garbage. How do I pay for a large loaded nachos and it was just fake chess, sour cream, three pieces of tomato cilantro, sprinkled over the top. The drink was off. Just it was just terrible. There was like a homeless man passed out beside me. I felt so comfortable. 0 out of 10 I do not recommend this place and I will not be coming back. I would get this location negative stars if it was even possible, but it's not so one start it is.

N Perfecto

Google
Great sized drinks and food tasted great. Definitely a great happy hour deals.

Sitting outside this lovely establishment reading my book, expertly mixed craft-cocktail in hand, I hear the person behind me call this place a dive bar. My soon to be new friend, it is anything but a dive bar. Come check it out other future new friends! 🖖😘 Did I mention the cocktails come in huge Masson jars? The one pictured is 32oz… cause how else am I gonna make friends? You can also get a more reasonable 16oz.

Google
Drinks are large and extra-large. Mason jars rule! A bar that was always way too crowded has leveled out in this post-pandemic world. Bar staff is always courteous and polite. Bathrooms had no light.

Bron Snow

Google
This place is legendary. One of the best kitchens I ever worked in and absolutely delicious place to eat to boot.

Google
Awesome staff! Food is always amazing here, the chicken is to die for 🤤 Drinks are always good and I love the vibe of all the local art inside. It's one of my favorite little spots to chill with a nice drink and a snack, or devour some amazing brunch on Sunday.

Yelp
Be wary of the mason jars they are dangerous! Typical dive bar, with a happy hour, good service and board games if you like and plenty of seating.
google avatar

Shoko P.

Yelp
Nice to have a classic cozy comfy non-judgmental space being here for a long time. Happy Hour still happens until 7pm!

Yelp
Atmosphere: Kinda dicey, but not so so divey. Idk wasn't really my vibe but if you like it then it's probably a good spot for you. Loud ambiance Food: Didn't eat but they had some mason jar cocktails which looked cool Price: They had cheap beers so that's a plus Service: Fine Parking: Street parking

Yelp
We love the big drinks from Swift and the service has always been good. Not a lot of options for food that I like but we mainly come here for the chill vibe. It's dark inside but they do have seating setup for outside. It's all street parking but it's a good spot for summer time drinks.
google avatar

MacnZizi S.

Yelp
We went for happy hour ambiance was nice - I look forward to going in summer where we can sit outside..food were yum (fried deviled eggs) and the amazingly delicious mix drinks in mason jars! Service was great & friendly. Thank You!

Yelp
Visited here based on a tiktok video about the happy hour. Drinks are large, strong and cheap, but the food is not much to write home about. It's pretty cheap bar food, but it is a good deal with the happy hour pricing. It's fast and casual.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly, this bar is a gem. 2 reasons: Mason Cocktails, specifically the refreshing one hits so nicely during this season. But great price, great large size, and great taste. Culture, the crowd that comes here is unlike the rest of town. You'll feel that this establishment has their own type of crowd and the music is on point with returning djs on different days. Inside you'll be able to experience the dimly lit atmosphere with music, outside is a rather chill vibe with booths for larger parties and a fire in the middle. Sprinkled generously with graffiti covering the wooden walls lol

Yelp
Went for a date night to check out the Anino pop up. I usually just go to swift for their cocktails but was excited to try the specials tonight. The pork pulled sliders were amazing, and the caramelized Banana split was beyond delicious. 10/10 would recommend. I love local bars that have rotating food pop ups, defiantly adds a unique twist. I hope they bring Amino back soon!

Yelp
Swift is always good. And their food inspection score is always high. Good drinks, and good decent food. Not top drawer imho, but the rest makes up for it..
google avatar

Sophia L.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go grab a drink with friends, especially before I go dancing (which I can do there on thursdays!) The brussels sprouts were delicious and garlicky, and the cocktails were fantastic as well. This is definitely a go to regular spot for me.
google avatar

Deandre M.

Yelp
Swift is a little bit of a hole-in-the-wall but in a good way. The DJ is usually on point and the drinks are strong. Ask for the bartender Nichelle if you need a good drink!
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
No private lot parking. Plenty of street parking. This is a dive bar with great drinks, some good food, and plenty of joyful people. They have live music or DJ for most nights. They serve brunch on Saturdays and Sundays but the kitchen is small. I came here on a Saturday for brunch and sat outside. I could not hear the DJ but it was still a good time. You must order your drinks and food at the bar but they will bring the food out to you. You must order the mason jars of drinks.
google avatar

Siobhan S.

Yelp
Ixael and Jordon were both fantastic people to order a drink and some delicious elote empanadas from! My god, those empanadas! And also, the service! I generally end up fighting Someone every time I leave my apartment and so they had seen me embarrass myself before, but they were super nice Anyway. And it just really made a difference to me.

Yelp
Limited on seating but that's probably due to their better average drink prices. The wife and I love this place. Between the food and the drinks we are always leaving far and happy. We have enjoyed every food dish we've had here. The last thing we got was one of their pulled pork w/ river and beans bowls for only $5! It was full of flavor and a great portion size and for only $5?! Their fish bowls are hella good!! Whether it's the bourbon one (the wife's favorite) or the spicy one (I like the most) or even the peach one...they are all so good and honestly quite a steal!! I always appreciate a place that also offers an inexpensive beer for the budget conscious so I'm always peeping for Debate and they hit the nail on the head, pricing them at $3. And take your pick, not a Tecate fan? They've got PBR and Reiner on the docket for your drinking pleasure chiming in at the same price! It's the little things...like how they also have Aardvark hot sauce?! Hell yeah!

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Check their website for the current menu before you go. Most food pics and posted menus are for items no longer offered. We stopped in before an event nearby and the menu was very limited. The food was good, but maybe 1/2 of the options I expected. Great lil spot that I've visited a handful of times. Good food, drinks, and vibe.

Yelp
The Swift Lounge is a cozy spot to kick it! Walls have funky art, beer is cold - sweet selection of taps...ohhhh. bar staff is Cool, Easy Going and super chill!

Yelp
The food was soo surprisingly good!! We ordered several appetizers, a salad and a bowl to share between two. Everything was very flavorful and fresh. Friendly staff!!
google avatar

Yelp
One of my favorite bars in Portland! The mason jar drinks are to die for, and the food is tasty too!

Yelp
Great place to get drunk off of sweet dranks in mason jars if you're in your mid-20s', or to have brunch if you're in your mid-30's. Food is good, not great. Drinks are good, not great. Service is OK.
google avatar

Michelle E.

Yelp
Stopped by for a drink with a friend and would definitely go back for another refreshing beverage. I didn't have any food but it is a great place to grab a drink and it won't break the bank. Bartender was helpful in picking out a drink I'd like. Fun graffiti walls!

Yelp
This is my first time going to this establishment. I was told it was pretty cool and mellow which it is, so I give it a five for that music, locality and overall ambience. But as soon as I walked in I had to go to the restroom and was immediately thinking to myself that I was going to have to give these folks at least a 4 because there are no toilet cover seats!!! In a bar as grimy as it is there's no way they should not have toilet paper seat covers. I mean I took photos of the bathroom is not a place you really want to take a shit at or even trust to sit on the toilet by accident. Great happy hour hours and decent prices. the drinks were OK as well as the food. Not a place I would rush to go back too...this is a place that you go when you're already loaded, you've already had something to eat & the only thing you want is a french fry because you got your flask in your purse
google avatar

Randall C.

Yelp
If the cleanliness of the bathrooms are an indication of the condition of the kitchen I would stick to the drink menu.
google avatar

Leticia V.

Yelp
Good drinks, BOMB music, fun atmosphere! This place could use a little fixing up but it's the definition of a dive bar so what do you expect?! The vibe is pretty great and that wins major points in my book. The bartender was on top of our drink order which is much appreciated. We had just ate dinner so we didn't try any food but the couple next to us got some and it looked and smelled yummy! I got an extra dirty martini and it was made perfectly.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Let me start off with saying what a cool place! It's such a cool ambiance. It's all dark and funky decor but super nice.. I love that place! My friend lives over there so every time I visit I ask her to take me the coolest and fun places! People were dancing or in their own little world - that's awesome. We ordered the mac and cheese and fries topped with fondue cheese.. look how creamy and good that looks! AHHH it was smoking when it came out - talk about fresh! 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Get Nate's chicken!!! It is soooooooo delicious!!!!! My bf and I ate it three days in a row!!! Their drinks are great too!!! My favorite is the first one on the menu, chimney swift! It tastes like heaven, which can be dangerous after a few of those! This place can be super busy but if you can sit outside on a beautiful day, you're good! It's also popular for brunch! But my two recommendations are Nate's chicken & the chimney swift. But i enjoyed their other drinks too, like the stoned finch and the Kentucky blackbird. They have two restrooms. The one that is the most visible (right next to the bar) is extremely dark! I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see!! There is also another in the back Corner that you can use. Overall, I love this place!

Yelp
Looking for dark, loud, and quite alcoholic? You found the place! We took a Lyft to the Swift Lounge since we were visiting from out of town and one of our Portland friends mentioned there wouldn't be alot of street parking. They weren't wrong! We walked in and were absolutely treated like outsiders, which was an immediate turn off. After having to help ourselves to asking for menus/drink menus, we found a seat and made our decisions. That night they were having large mason jar crushes as a specialty drink, so of course, we had to! They were delicious!!! Definitely will do that again. The finger foods/bar foods were phenomenal, filling, and had many many options to choose from. Service | 4 out of 5 Stars | Mostly due to hospitality. We didn't feel welcome for a while when we arrived, even by staff. Facility | 4 our of 5 Stars | Tables, silverware, location, etc were all very clean and sanitary. There was only one bathroom I could see/find which was right next to the kitchen entrance/bar area. The bathroom was a single person/one door bathroom that appeared to not have been cleaned at all that day. A little off-putting. Food/Beverages | 5 out of 5 Stars | Delicious, clean, and many options available! Great cost too! Thank you! Overall | 4 out of 5 Stars | Even though we aren't from Portland, we definitely could have been welcomed a little more. I understand there's an atmosphere you're always going for but you could at least say "Hi... good evening... welcome..." etc. Great place to sit close with friends, laugh, drink, and have a relaxing evening.

Yelp
Skip down a few paragraphs if you don't want to read this needless backstory. I was in Portland for an extended weekend and met lots of people around town during various activities. Met some people at a rooftop bar and asked about where we should go out and Swift came up. We played some pick up basketball with some guys at the park and they asked what we were up to, and they suggested that we check out Swift. I don't remember where else it was suggested, but someone else along the way somewhere suggested swift, I think maybe another bar suggested it. So we stopped by late night on Sunday night and it turns out that this is the same place I walked to from where I was staying last time I was in Portland. It was dead on Sunday night, but we just grabbed a couple mason jar drinks and hung out and chatted with the bartenders. Friday and Saturday night it gets packed. Last time I came there was a DJ and we did a little light dancing, there is also a street fighter 2 arcade game if you want to have a nostalgic battle with Blanka, M. Bison and the boys (and Chun Li). Round 1, FIGHT! The food is actually really good here. The fries are amazing. Last time I was here the people with me got food and enjoyed it. I had a couple bites and thought it was good. The space is small, but there is seating at the bar, around the edges, a couple booths and there is outdoor seating. Most of the music is good rap and hip hop, some new stuff, but definitely a lot of classics and I enjoy listening to that type of music. This is a cool place to drop in and hang out and maybe dance a little. Check it out. If my review wasn't informative enough, check out some of the other reviews.

Oscar T.

Yelp
They just recently got a new chef and their food just went from decent to Amazing! So kudos to the team on that. Will for sure say that it does get a little to rowdy with no sight of respect for the other quests nor management to ask anybody to level out. Solid 4 star business none the less. Always greeted with smiles and good drinks on the weekends
google avatar

Rachel L.

Yelp
Checked out this spot for the first time with a few friends. Good vibes, affordable drinks and had no problem finding a seat. My friend said it's quite the spot for younger people to go out and mingle... there were a couple ladies there that night who seemed very... interested in me! I'm looking forward to coming back in the summer with the outdoor seating!
google avatar

Yelp
Eww Wee Not a good experience at all for me. The whole time I was asking myself, how is this place still in business.. that's pretty bad when all you want to do is get the hell out of there. Food was old and lukewarm. Couldn't even enjoy it at all. The place was dirty, the floors are filthy the tables the same. Service was really really absent. They forgot our libations ..that's a bar SIN, I had to ask for the drinks when they brought out the food. I had to walk up to the bar to ask for the bill..Big No No. The waitstaff was too busy chatting it up with friends at the bar. I guess they were "catching up" All & All, this place checked all my boxes on bad dining and how to drive a business into the ground. I have very few one star reviews, so trust me ..it was totes disaster.
google avatar

Annette R.

Yelp
Wish I could give a Zero because after one drink here was a group so loud and obviously drunk they could barely walk then trying to drive off which took ten minutes and two different people trying the one who drove off was even more intoxicated I told the bartender a uber should have been ordered she tells me it's not her problem once they leave the door but yet she did NOT cut them off
google avatar

Whitney M.

Yelp
I mean...this place was OK. I got heavily intoxicated after drinking some mason jar drinks that were meh at best but apparently packed quite a punch because I woke up feeling like -$100. The place was too trendy to be a dive bar but too dirty to be trendy (does this make any sense at all?). The best part about it was the brussel sprout but the fondu fries were terrible. Tasted like rue. Anywho, I don't think I will go back...but it was an experience (from what I can gather in selfies).
google avatar

Jade L.

Yelp
Do NOT use a credit card here. Their machine was "down," but I was told they could still process my charge ($29), I just wouldn't be able to sign for it. Not a problem, and fortunately I had enough cash for a tip. Come to find out later when perusing my credit card statement that they added $6 to my bill ($35). Very shady. Not sure if they were bought out, but I have never had any issues here pre-pandemic. Buyer beware!
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
I come here often for happy hour however this will be my last. The bartender was extremely rude and passive to my partner and I while we were ordering and said less than two words to us while heavily examining our IDS(?) I ordered two mason jars and buffalo sliders to share. We left Swift right after we finished our one drink because we just weren't feeling welcomed...1 hour later my partner and I felt extremely sick. for the remainder of the evening and all night we were EXTREMELY sick to our stomachs to say the least. My partner and I went to the doctor this morning since we still felt sick and doc ruled alcohol poisoning. FROM ONE DRINK?! Should have trusted my gut and left after the rude bartender interaction. (Check their health score ppl!!)

Reed C.

Yelp
This place got so awful. My favorite part of the pandemic was when they weren't open. The world was truly healing without them. The bartenders are awful and consistently grossly over serve people, there's puke in the bathroom at all times, and it attracts (or creates?) the loudest, most belligerent people. No exaggeration there is a shooting or car accident in front of it every. month. Don't park your car within a couple blocks of it bc a drunk person leaving the bar will drive into your car and then just drive away. Drunk drivers doing donuts super late at night for long stretches of time or loud verbal or physical fights are other nightly occurrences. I don't have any respect for anyone who goes to this god-awful place.
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
Been here a couple times now and I'm really stoked on it. Their drink menu is awesome and reasonably-priced. The vibes from the employees are chill and the patrons filling the place are always equally as chill. It's pretty small inside, but all the windows in the front help it not feel that way. I haven't gotten any food yet, but I'm excited to at some point. We'll be back soon!
google avatar

V. C.

Yelp
Five stars for Swift, zero stars for stupid Yelpers! I'm thoroughly entertained by the negative reviews written by dramatic customers. I go to Swift all the time. It's a fun place with cheap drinks and good food-- can't ask for much more. Happy Hour is one of their busiest times of the day so when you choose to go during HH don't expect the busy bartender to ask you about your hopes, dreams and aspirations in life. They're just too busy busting their asses trying to get yours and everyone else's drinks made before you start huffing and puffing from impatience. Words of advice: Have your ID ready to show because yes, you are in a bar. Also, if there's a line, grab a menu and decide what you want while you're waiting so you don't hold up the line when it's your turn to order. It's just common sense. If you are the type a patron who likes to hear yourself talk, don't force your way into other people's personal space and expect them to engage in conversation with you. Some of us 9-5ers get off work and would like to decompress and enjoy a drink while being left alone. Don't bug people, it's rude! Lastly, TIP YOUR BARTENDER! They make you delicious drinks and put up with your shit. Don't get me started on the number of dumb, obvious questions that I've personally heard a number of people ask that they could have easily answered themselves by just reading the menu! I've witnessed the bartenders patiently and kindly answer every question asked. Excuse my rant but enough is enough! I truly feel that the bartenders are being unfairly criticized by bad customers who lack common sense.
google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
So it's possible that I'd a few too many drinks before dropping by Swift the other night. It's also possible that the giant mason jar of cucumber, lime, and basil wasn't as amazing as I remember it... but I highly doubt it! So I was a little unsober, but it was also one of the greatest drinks I've ever been a part of. I'm a beer snob who will be back for a liquor drink. That's saying something. Interesting tap list, too, for the record.

Yelp
***HAPPY HOUR REVIEW ONLY*** This place is great for drinks during the happy hour. My friends and I were here during Sunday Happy Hour (4pm-close). The Mason jars are pretty good at $5 for 16oz. We really enjoyed Stoney Finch and Kentucky Blackbird. I quite like the seasonal jar, but my friends didn't. We had the chicken taquitos, fondue fries, and Nates Chicken. They are ok. Definitely good for drinks! Food is good if you need some munchies.
google avatar

Jo V.

Yelp
Still 5 stars!!! Don't come, it's already packed!!! Large mason. 2 orders of housemade taquitos and its all good!
google avatar

Megan C.

Yelp
My go-to dive bar! Happy hour is M-F l, 4p-8p and Sun 4p-2a. Their $5 hamburger sliders (2 pieces) are small but they're super yummy and surprisingly filling if you need a snack before you drink! The music is new and old school rap/hip hop and ambiance is dark, semi-loud, but food and drinks are cheap and good so I can't complain. There's also some outdoor seating.
google avatar

Naomi G.

Yelp
Love this place!! Love the chimney swift!! It is my go to drink when I go here! Never had any issues with this place! The only thing I would say is that it gets SO busy, and finding a place to sit or even stand when it gets really busy is SO hard!! But when you can grab a seat and relax it's a wonderful place!! When it was snowing, my boyfriend and I sat outside on the built in benches and relaxed in the pretty snowy wonderland. It was pretty nice! Chilly, but nice!! I would recommend to anyone who want a cozy spot to get a mason jar drink!
google avatar

Shaedyn M.

Yelp
This place took my first legal drink experience, so I think it has a little place in my heart. But from an unbiased point of view, I really liked this little place. And I really mean little. It is on a pretty packed road, but if you can find parking I say you go ahead and go in! I wanted to go to a place that had both good food AND good drinks, and they had both! Everyone talks about the mason jar drinks, so I asked the waitress to get me the most popular one in the "Sissy" size and a sissy I was. Got me tipsy halfway through. Mind you, it was on an empty stomach. That was handled soon by one of their bowls. They ran out of broccoli and they gave me a range of veggie substitutions and I chose cauliflower. We also ordered a Mac and cheese that tasted like gourmet chili-Mac. Extremely yummy! My bowl wasn't drenched in sauce which I enjoyed. It was very refreshing and filling, and there were fried leeks which added such an amazing flavor. Plus a little Aardvark sauce and you're golden. The bathroom is a little dinky, so I avoided that madhouse. Overall, a fun first drink experience!

Yelp
Drinks are watered down and poor customer service from the black girl... wouldn't recommend at all

Yelp
I came here on the Saturday before Halloween. I wasn't in a very Halloweeny mood, and I asked a friend if she wanted to take in a movie, followed by drinks. After the movie, I asked her what was in her' hood, where we could grab a drink, and Swift came to mind. Pretty small and dark place. Reminds me of a goth bat cave. We grabbed a seat in a booth, and looked over the drink menu. Interesting drink selection. The sign said to order at the bar, which we did. They didn't take our money at the time. I ordered the Bitchy Parrot...spicy drink in a big mason jar! My friend ordered the Stoned Finch...refreshing drink, sort of like a mojito. We weren't hungry, so didn't order any food. The walls and ceiling are painted black. Booths are red. Interesting and unique art adorn the walls and crevices. Not sure if that's because it was Halloween weekend or not. Lots of people in costume, so fun to people watch. There were games on a table, that people helped themselves to play amongst their groups. I've heard the food is good, and I'd like to go back, hopefully bring up the rating a star or so. We went up to the bar to pay our bill before heading out, but sure feels like it might be easy to drink and dash!
google avatar

Whitney P.

Yelp
Decent location, on-street parking, outdoor/sidewalk seating (which is also the designated smoking area, unfortunately). Fast service, friendly staff, strong drinks, great food! They have some really unique drinks and 32-oz mason jar drinks for $8... highly recommended :) The place is small and it gets busy, so be prepared to stand up all night, if you don't get there early. The crowd is an eclectic mix of straight and LGBT. The staff is heavily tattooed, so are most of the patrons, so nice scenery :) Great background music will put you into party mode. I couldn't sit still in my seat, because the beatz had me dancing on my barstool.
google avatar

Brian D.

Yelp
Solid place for drinks outdoor on a warm summer night. This place is very unique for their mason jar ice cocktails. $6 for a 16oz and $9 for a 32oz. They typically have a seasonal flavor written on the board as well as their usual flavors. There was also a live DJ on a Wednesday evening when I came. Definitely recommend anyone looking for a place to grab drinks and sit outside.
google avatar

Josh C.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and the service is good. Vibe is chill, and those jar drinks are DANGEROUS (Read: potent) and tasty. Food is far to standard. Only gripe is that it seems to take awhile to get your drink if there are 3 people in line because their jars are super popular and take a good amount of effort to make. Definitely recommended if you're on the hunt for a quality house specialty drink.
google avatar

Troy H.

Yelp
Always have good drinks, an extended happy hour with a very tasty menu. I only wish the Mac n cheese was on the happy hour menu even at half the portion and price. We come in every Thursday and are never dissatisfied. Staff is friendly.
