The Best Restaurants and Bars on Portland, Oregon’s Alberta Street | Eater Portland

"A tiny outpost of the Alps in Portland has been hiding just off Alberta for fifteen years, tucked away on 14th Avenue behind a ZoomCare. The Swiss Hibiscus team, which traces its roots back to a Swiss restaurant opened in Honolulu in 1982, lovingly prepares Swiss classics like emince Zurichoise, or pork in a mushroom cream sauce, and spaghetti Ticinese, Switzerland’s answer to Italy’s famous pasta dish. Other central European staples like wienerschnitzel and goulash also make appearances on the menu. Entrees come with rösti — stuffed hashbrowns — or spätzli. And of course, where better to indulge in cheesy fondue and a glass of wine on a chilly Portland evening?" - Katherine Chew Hamilton

The Best Underrated, Hidden Gem Restaurants in Portland | Eater Portland

"When it opened on Alberta in 2010, Swiss Hibiscus was one of the very few — if only — Swiss restaurants in the area. Now, it’s one of a handful of spots in town that serve Alpine standards like cheese fondue and schnitzel. But regulars still frequent Swiss Hibiscus for hearty fare like goulash, wienerschnitzel, and rösti, a Swiss-style hash brown. A particular star on the menu is the Emince Zurichoise, a comfort food dish of thinly sliced pork in a mushroom cream sauce." - Eater Staff

Where to Find the Best French Onion Soup in Portland | Eater Portland

"This Alberta district restaurant is one of the only places in Portland to get a full-on Swiss meal. Along with traditional entrees like emince Zurichoise, many of the starters are a veritable cheese-fest: fondue, spätzli, and rösti can all come with a heavy dose of Emmentaler. The Alpine restaurant also borrows from its western neighbor and proudly serves a so-called Swiss onion soup as one of its rotating soups of the day. It’s best to call ahead to make sure it’s available."

Where to Find Cheese Fondue in Portland | Eater Portland

"Of course Portland’s primary Swiss restaurant is going to offer some version of this quintessential Alpine dish. Alberta’s Swiss Hibiscus bolsters its traditional fondue with the requisite Kirsch, a central European brandy, which gives it a lovely sweetness; it arrives at the table with cubes of French bread, though those interested can add vegetables for a touch of something fresh. Pro tip: Order a bratwurst or wienerschnitzel with the fondue for some exceptionally decadent dipping." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

13 Standout Vegetarian Meals in Portland | Eater Portland

"Even though this Alberta restaurant’s most popular items are definitely not vegan, there are a couple excellent options for both vegans and particularly vegetarians to enjoy here—like the sautéed mushrooms appetizer, or the restaurant’s vegan version of rösti, a Swiss hash brown pancake. The restaurant’s savory vegan lentil stew includes a complex medley of herbs, vegetables, and spices. Plus, the restaurant will make versions of its traditional, pork-centric dishes with tofu; that includes the restaurant’s killer paprika schnitzel, served in a mushroom cream sauce. Takeout order instructions appear on the restaurant’s website." - Jenni Moore

We visit a few times a year from Eugene for amazing food. The fondue and swiss onion soup are our favorites! Although, everything we get is good.

We wanted to try something different and this certainly was different and surprisingly amazing. Cute, little place, may want to make reservations, we went for a walk around the neighborhood until our table was ready. From the moment we walked in, the staff was very friendly and food was amazing, nothing you have tried before, the special for the night was fish with roasted banana on the top! It was amazing, everyone should try this place.

Google
Had the goulash with rosti, FANTASTIC!! The staff is very kind and responsive. The inside is small with not many tables so make sure to reserve ahead. Can’t wait to visit again!

We had the most AMAZING dinner at Swiss Hibiscus!! After we ordered our meals and sat down, we were immediately served hot rolls with Martin’s dressing and Martin’s hot dressing. The rolls were light and fluffy and both dressings were delicious. We started with cheese fondue and French bread cubes. It was so good and plenty for the 4 of us. Then we had the French onion soup and Potato Leek soup. Each had excellent flavor. The house salat and cabbage salat both had Martin’s dressing on them and were very fresh. Our entrees were very filling. The pork Osso buco had an amazing sauce and fell right off the bone. The linguine was very tasty. The roast chicken sandwich was seasoned perfectly. The bratwurst with browned onions, au jus and spatzli was fantastic. The chicken wienerschnitzel was perfectly seasoned, lightly breaded and crispy and the spatzli was wonderful. We did make room for desserts. Their special was profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and melted chocolate. We got 2 orders. We also got a house-made chocolate chip cookie ice cream cookie sandwich and vanilla ice cream with melted chocolate. The service was impeccable. Both servers were very kind and attentive. The chef has put her heart and soul into the preparation of our meals. We are looking forward to our next visit!

This is such a great spot! The vibes are cozy with just a few little tables, Swiss motifs in the decor, and a little window into the kitchen--it feels really intimate, like you're in a bed and breakfast almost. The menu is really fun and has an old-world, hearty feel. The food was delicious! Also worth noting that many things can be made gluten free (for Celiac, too), including many of the sauces and schnitzel, which was an awesome surprise. The service was friendly and relaxed. Awesome little hidden gem in Alberta!

Google
Impeccable food: a great place to try some true European food. One of the best meals I've had in years. The woman working there allowed me to order in German. I'm not fluent, but I'm practicing, and she (though she didn't know much German at all!) caught just enough to work through it with me and even respond in simple German phrases. She truly made my day. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to have an awesome meal at an amazing place!

Google
The restaurant is a nice little gem of Portland. Delicious food with good sized portions. I had the Emince Zurichoise, with rösti, and a starter of Swiss Barley soup. I also had the profiterole with ice cream and chocolate sauce. As someone who lived in Switzerland previously, this brings me back with how good is everything. The friendly service staff are always attentive with refilling water glasses, taking finished dishes away, and any other requests. My partner is gluten intolerant and they were ready with letting us know about which menu items had gluten. Overall, lovely little place and a gem of Portland.

Google
What can I say except Swiss Hibiscus exceeded my expectations! When I found this restaurant for our vacation, it was because I was feeling cheese fondue for the evening. I found delicious cheese fondue, incredible entrees, dessert, and customer service! The restaurant setting is so cozy along with really nice employees. We ordered the escargot, cheese fondue, Swiss onion soup, spaghetti ticinese, and caramel custard for dessert. I recommend absolutely everything we ordered, especially the caramel custard!!! As a self proclaimed dessert expert, it was perfect. We also got some complimentary homemade holiday dessert made by the owner’s mother. How sweet was that? Will definitely be back next time we’re in Portland! Thank you Swiss Hibiscus and your lovely staff!

Yelp
Had some family visiting and take them here and share one of best date night spots we ever had. Everything was so spot on to our experience previously and they even remembered us after it had been several months since coming in! If you're looking for a place to flex on your relatives or future in laws in Portland, look no further. We took them boating, wake surfing, and they even spent a day out in the beautiful Columbia gorge doing all sorts of fun stuff only to say that dinner at Swiss Hibiscus was their favorite part of visiting. Sometimes all it takes is good people, great food, and an imported cider to realize the best of times are sometimes happening over a pot of fondue. The trick is knowing where to go, and if you've found yourself thinking about going here, I can confidently say it be worth picking over almost any spot in the area. Tell me a place you can experience 5 star service, food, and ambiance without $$$$ next to the restaurant name... I'll wait. Kind, genuine, and good people can feel hard to find these days, but you can bet you'd find a whole room full of them if you knew the right place to look and Swiss Hibiscus is definitely that place. I'd give them 6 stars if I could, but nonetheless thank you to the chefs, waitstaff, and owner for the kindness and care during our meal, we will be back someday soon, ready to impress more of our family & friends with all you have to offer.

Yelp
Wow. One of the best restaurants in Portland hands down FOOD we got an assortment of classic Swiss dishes. All are seasoned to perfection. Unfortunately it has been a while since I ate here and couldn't give more details but trust me you won't be disappointed SERVICE The staff here are super nice. They sat us within minutes but we also had a reservation as well. The restaurant itself is kinda small and intimate. Highly recommend to make a reservation instead of walking in. ALL IN ALL. Go and thank me later :D

Yelp
I can't believe I just found out about this restaurant. What a great way to enjoy comfort German food that goes beyond brats and pretzels. I had Spätzl and became obsessed so when I searched Yelp I was able to find Sweet Hibiscus and see them offer so much more. Check out their menu online but they also have specials on their board when you walk in. We got lucky and were able to grab a spot for dinner without a reservation since we trekked through the rain but it does seem like a popular spot so I would recommend just booking a time in case. I really enjoyed the PAPRIKA SCHNITZEL and EMINCE ZURICHOISE. The prices are a little higher than what you might expect but worth it. The flavors have great depth and spices. The schnitzel was tender and soaked up the sauces and was delicious. I would recommend getting the SPÄTZLI w/ EMMENTALER CHEESE also. There were also a couple of dessert specials which I ordered and did not disappoint. If they're on the menu be sure to check them out!

Yelp
As good as the hype says! A cozy spot serving European/Swiss delicacy. Do make a reservation cause their space is pretty small. Everything was delicious and unique. We started off with their hot, crispy bread that was supposed to be dip with their house sauces. A great way to start the meal. We then had their Escargot, which was my first time! Loved how buttery and garlic it was. The Snails were cooked perfectly too. Each entreé came with a side and soup/salad. We got the Specials Beef Tenderloin with Cabbage Salad and Rösti and the Goulash with Mutigawny Soup and Spatzli. We loved them both but my winner was the Goulash. The pork was sooo tender and melty. The stew was super flavorful and it went perfectly with the fresh spatzli that was crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. The soup was tasty too. I had nothing to complain about their food here. All very unique and well-executed. Of course, we had to get dessert. We split the Eis Kaffee which was a coffee milkshake and the Profiterole that was covered with hot chocolate sauce and filled with vanilla ice cream. A great way to wrap up the meal. Will definitely be back to try their Fondue next!

Yelp
Transported to Switzerland in every bite! Swiss Hibiscus is a true gem, offering the most authentic Swiss cuisine that feels like a warm embrace from the Swiss Alps. The flavors, the ambiance, and the hospitality whisked me away to a memorable evening in Switzerland. From the first bite to the last, it was a delightful journey of authentic Swiss delights. A must-visit for anyone longing for a taste of Switzerland right here in Portland! Chef Jennie,Tammy and staff treated us with complete kindness and their food was made with love & aloha

Yelp
A-mazing!!! The husband and I love Swiss Hibiscus and we love taking friends and family here. The soups are always creative and tasty. The specials change frequently...which never fail to surprise and amaze our taste buds. Recently, we tried the fondue with veggies: so tasty. The potato rosti is a must: add Gruyère and bacon. This place is small, so make a reservation for the best experience. Good service. Great food. We'll be back again and again.
google avatar

Yelp
Though shnitzels & such aren't usually my favorite type of cuisine as it's usually a bit heavier but it's definitely hearty & this place does it well. We've tried several of the schnitzels and a few of their rotating specials, all of which have been pretty good. The entrees are a little pricey but it's a good amount of food, coming w/ either soup or salad & choice of rosti or linguini. The linguini was fine but the rosti is amazing, if you can only choose one choose that. I don't have other rosti experience to compare it to but it tasted like amazing more savory hashbrowns. We also tried the Profiteroles for dessert which was very tasty, like a bon bon stuffed w/ ice cream and a drizzled chocolate shell. The place itself is pretty small & you usually need reservations.

Yelp
Delicious swiss comfort food! Great place to have a well-rounded meal that will leave you full and satisfied. This is a small/intimate restaurant, so reservations are advised. I would also recommend looking at the menu beforehand, as you will place your order at the counter before you sit down. Don't worry if you want more drinks/dessert; you can order that from your table when your server comes to check on you! I enjoyed their salmon with dill cream sauce (on the special menu) with a salad, and profiterole for dessert. I would love to come back and try their fondue with a group of 4, as I'd want it to be an appetizer and still get to enjoy a main course. Service is friendly and courteous, and this is a great place for a date or a quieter catch up with friends.

Yelp
This gem of a Swiss establishment took me right back home to my mom's kitchen. From the escargot that swam in a delicious garlic butter, to the crunchy and piping hot homemade bread to sop up the delicacy, I was satisfied. I'm not a fan of reading the menu and standing in a crowded spot and then ordering and sitting down at our reserved table, the flow just doesn't make sense. It must work, as it is quite a successful restaurant. Once you figure out all the ins and outs of the menus and added any included items, you can sit down and relax, waiting for goodness to be served your way. We ordered the following and not one thing disappointed. Escargot in garlic butter. These are delicious and you don't even need to deal with a decorative shell. Just get right down to business and start enjoying. The Swiss Onion Soup is a must. Pay a little bit extra and allow your taste buds to explore the delicacy. We started with the house salad and the cabbage salad, both tossed with their house dressing (the chef's dad's recipe) and available to buy and bring home and slather on what you like. It is delicious. We are taking this back to California and wowing our friends with this amazing dressing. The Wienerschnitzel was perfectly breaded and fried, served with a traditional slice of lemon and a side of rosti (fried hash browns) or spatzli. Either are excellent as sides. The Bratwurst with brown gravy and onions was my favorite, accompanied by rosti. Had to share this with the group so that all could taste the wonderful dish and long for it later. Oh, but we aren't done. This group had to venture into dessert, which were the profiteroles (cream puffs filled with vanilla ice cream and topped with a homemade chocolate sauce). Come on, this place is Swiss, chocolate has to show up somewhere. 2 Bottles of Oregonian Pinot Noir later and a delicious meal, we can easily say that this was a wonderful dining experience and a memorable one at that. We will be back one day to experience Fondue or Raclette, but for now while it is 96 degrees, this was as light as we could go. Support this restaurant, and if you are Swiss, take a walk down memory lane. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I just love this local little gem. Make a reservation...it's a small place and they fill up quick. The menu does change and you can look online for their most recent offerings. The fondue is simple blissful yumminess! The Swiss onion soup is piping hot and so flavorful. This is a small family owned restaurant and their service is so amazing. It's always a great experience whenever we have gone in.

Kim B.

Yelp
Swiss Hibiscus is my all time favorite place to eat when I'm in Portland! I love everything about this place and the food! The food is spectacular! Everything they serve is just delicious! The sauce for your bread, especially the spicy one is my favorite! I totally recommend this place and will always go when I visit Portland. I would recommend making reservations as the restaurant is small.

Yelp
Both our dishes were delicious! The Swiss dressing was fantastic on everything; we bought a bottle to take home.

Yelp
My visit to Swiss Hibiscus was great. It's a small restaurant so I highly recommend getting a reservation prior to visiting to ensure that you get a table. As many customers have, I heard about Swiss Hibiscus via Dinners Drive Ins and Dives. The service and ambience were great. I got the paprika schnitzel with Spätzli and French onion soup. The French onion soup was delicious and had a perfect cheese crust. The pork was cooked perfectly and I loved the chewiness of the spätzli. The cream sauce was rich and flavorful. Overall, I would recommend coming here for an upscale, delicious meal.

Deniece R.

Yelp
This little restaurant is charming. The owner and her staff treat you like you are guests in their home. The fondue! OMG... delicious! The entrees did not disappoint. It was like the Swiss Grandma you always wanted had spent the day cooking for you. I highly recommend this little gem.

Yelp
It was a good surprise to find a restaurant in Portland area. The staff was very nice and friendly. The dishes were amazing key note, we have to get reservations ahead. I do wish there are some more vegetarian options.

Very carefully prepared Swiss cuisine. Upscale comfort food. Very clean and friendly.

Yelp
Possibly the best German food in Portland! I had the classic chicken schnitzel, which, along with the spatzle, was perfection. I've always LOVED spatzle since I was a wee one so I was very pleased. The bread and salad were incredible too, and that salad dressing was to die for. Seriously. Now, a few things you should know: it's a very small dining area with only a few tables. I actually really liked this, as it felt very intimate and cozy. But this means you MUST make a reservation. I believe in our case we made one 9 days in advance! Worth it though. But to sum it up: friendly staff, cozy dining room and astronomically awesome food. Now shoo! Get over to Swiss Hibiscus!

Tara C.

Yelp
Absolutely delightful place with fantastic tasting food. When you do a happy dance in your chair because it's that good. You know you have to tell others about it. This place will not disappoint. A must try and must make a reservation.

Yelp
I can't believe how long it's taken me to eat at Swiss Hibiscus. It's been in my bookmarks for so long and I finally made my way here. And let me tell you, they did NOT disappoint! After visiting Germany (right before the start of the pandemic) I've been craving authentic, delicious schnitzel and spaetzle. There was a restaurant in Beaverton that satisfied my cravings, but they recently closed down permanently. Thank goodness for Swiss Hibiscus! I tried the paprika schnitzel and also took bites from everyone else's dishes in my party and everything was good. The employees were nice and made you feel welcome, but it also felt a little rushed. The restaurant is very small so I'm sure they need to turn over tables quickly. Overall I loved this restaurant and will be back for sure!
google avatar

Jade S.

Yelp
Great food and very warm and inviting place. Owner is great and the service is excellent. My son's love coming here for the fondue and snails and any entree with spatzle . I usually go for some swiss onion soup and jaegerschnitzel then grab a bottle of salad dressing to go when we visit. If you mashed up southern german food with french cheese, you get Swiss food. Is how I explained it and it is just so delicious. Must try!

Brittany T.

Yelp
omg the fried spatzle gave this dish another texture that was sooo nice with the paprika cream sauce .. and wow, the sauteed pork was perfection. moist and melted in my mouth. on top of this, sweetest. workers. ever. will definitely be back soon amazing lighting!! warm lighting lovers congregate
google avatar

Schelly Y.

Yelp
Swiss Hibiscus is comfort food served in a very cozy ambiance. The schnitzels were buttery tender goodness.

Veronica H.

Yelp
Ordered the Jägerschnitzel. Delicious! I got the hasbrown side hood but a little salty, and my bf got the spatzle side which I think I enjoyed more. They give you a side of bread before your meal comes out with a spicy and regular dressing. I'm not a beer person but I did like the Hefeweizen! They make you order at the front before you sit down which I didn't really like. It was my first time so I wasn't sure what to order so I just got the same as my bf. It's a tight space so def recommend reserving ahead of time.
google avatar

Susan H.

Yelp
It was my birthday and I wanted to try somewhere new. After reading reviews I chose Swiss Hibiscus. We were not disappointed. It's a little odd that you order before they seat you. We had checked the menu beforehand so it went fast. It's a small place and I only saw three employees but they were all very friendly and took good care of us. I ordered the jagerschnitzel and it was heavenly. Paprika schnitzel and beef stroganoff were also ordered. Everything was great! For dessert we ordered their chocolate mousse and a chocolate chip cookie. Again, delicious. I plan on returning. Make a reservation and check the menu ahead of time. And enjoy!!

Vicki B.

Yelp
We had Christmas Eve dinner here, and the food and service were fantastic! We both had Swiss Onion Soup and Tossed Salad with amazing house dressing. My husband had the Berner Platte and I had Weinerschnitzel with Rösti. For dessert we had a Profiterole and Carmel Custard. Everything was delicious! We can't wait to go back and try other dishes!
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Came here since it was on DDD and had 5 stars. Thought service was great. Food was bland except for mushroom sauce on Jäegermeister. It was very salty. The food is very similar to German food but sorry to say I was only able to give it 3 stars.
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
This is definitely a hidden gem in the heart of the Alberta Arts District. To say this place has incredible food is an understatement. Literally everything is delicious. We tried a salmon with fresh dill dish, onion soup, salad with their unique homemade dressing (that people come to buy by the bottle), and profiteroles. INCREDIBLE! It is a tiny place with limited seating and a few outdoor tables, and it gets busy, so plan ahead. Pro Tip: Email about making reservations a few days in advance, they will allow it but won't let you book too far out.
google avatar

Jeffrey D.

Yelp
This is a Super delicious restaurant. Went here with friends, the seating is limited, but worth the wait.

Yelp
After staying home for a few years due to the pandemic, we are starting to venture out again. when I was asked what I wanted for the holidays, I asked for a dinner at Swiss Hibiscus. It had been 3 years since our last visit .. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! There is a good reason this place consistently has 5 star ratings .. we love everything they offer, from their homemade bread to escargot & mushroom appetizers to onion soup & beef tenderloin fillets + we were lucky enough to get the last order of their profiteroles for dessert that night. So glad we skipped lunch that day. Amazing place.

Yelp
So, we were visiting from Hawaii with all of our fond memories of Swiss inn and added this to the Portland list of dining destinations. I only say this so you understand our expectations were all front-loaded. My gf purchased enough Swiss Inn dressing during the pandemic to keep the franchise afloat, but even she coasted into this review with the wind completely depleted from the sails. We arrived and there was some tension at the counter. A younger woman was training under who may have been one of the owners and it was explained that we should order at the counter and then proceed to our seats. We ordered wienerschnitzel, stroganoff, and cured salmon to start. Both came with salad, bread, and rosti potato. The tension continued between the trainor and trainee as dishes arrived. The cured salmon was tasty, and probably the best part of the meal. The stroganoff was incredibly salty. The fact that the pickles in the stroganoff were chewed to cut the saltiness of the dish is saying something. We order the rosti with raclette, and that was forgotten, so they brought another. Both the rosti with raclette and without were greasy, salty, and burned. It was a really bad experience. The wienerschnitzel was fine, but not enough to bring anyone back. The bread came with two dressings instead of butter. I'm not sure if this was a way to feature the dressings, but it fell a little flat for us. Weirdly, the dining room was filled with other visitors from Hawaii - probably trying to relive the glory days of Swiss Inn in Niu Valley (or memories), but for me - it didn't live up to expectations. Was what I remembered better than what it was? I really wanted to like this and wish that things could have been better.

Yelp
This is a wonderful cozy gem just off of Alberta. A tiny dining room with a welcoming and gracious owner and server, and delicious food full cheesy goodness. Best rosti outside of Zurich. Everything we had was delicious, and perfect for a cold Portland night. I look forward to returning and trying more of the temptations on the menu. Get a reservation and go! And say hello to that cute waiter.

Yelp
What a wonderful find! This gem tucked just off of Alberta, is perfect for a cozy evening of delicious hearty food, especially on a cold Portland night. We had a great meal of all things Swiss, how can you go wrong with all of the cheesy wonderfulness to be had. The place is small and welcoming, the staff excellent, and the owner gracious. We will be back, so glad to have found this spot, and I really don't know where the idea came from. Make a reservation, go, and enjoy!

Yelp
Swiss Hibiscus has its origins far from Portland, all the way in Hawaii, where Chef Martin Wyss opened Swiss Inn on Oahu. Now this family operation has migrated to Portland, and Swiss Hibiscus continues to serve homestyle Swiss and European dishes with love. After ordering at the counter, we were started off with two airy bread rolls, along with the famous Martin's Swiss Dressing (both the original and the spicy version). Each of the entrees came with an appetizer to start, and we got the cabbage salad (made with Martin's dressing of course); and a thick, warm Swiss barley soup with meat and vegetables. And then came the entrees! The most "Swiss" dish, according to our server, was the Emince Zurichoise, which was thinly sliced pork loin sautéed in a decadent, umami mushroom cream sauce. The Szegedin Goulash was a flavorful, spicy dish of pork shoulder simmered with paprika, onions, and sauerkraut, and finished with a touch of cream. With the entrees, we also got sides of sautéed spätzli (egg noodles) and rösti (a round potato hashbrown), which both paired nicely with the saucy meat dishes. Overall, the food here was just average in terms of quality and flavor, though the service was amazingly friendly and charming, and eating here was getting a taste of old, classic hospitality.

Yelp
We're not in Portland that often anymore, but this restaurant had been on our list for a while and we were finally able to make it happen. Thank goodness! We went on a Friday, which gave us some special weekend entree options. I took one of them, the cassoulet with a cabbage salad on the side. My girlfriend got an old classic, the jaegerschnitzel with roesti and a standard salad. I've had a lot of German food, but I've never had roesti, which I guess is more of a Swiss German thing. I didn't eat much of it since she liked it a lot, but it was flavorful and a nice variety pick over some items we already know well like spaetzle. My cassoulet was not quite like French cassoulets I've had, mostly because it was absolutely loaded with sliced sausage. I'll never complain about too much sausage! What pushes this restaurant over the top is great service. The lady processing orders was super friendly, and then the head cook (who seemed to be her mother) was going from table to table asking for feedback on the meals.

Yelp
One of the top three chicken fried steaks of my life, topped with gravy swimming with tasty sausage. Meat on my meat! But wait, the spinach was even better than the steak! How often does the spinach upstage the steak? Highlight of a quick trip through Lander.

Yelp
Swiss Hibiscus occupies an interesting niche, in that it doesn't fit the glut of brunch, Mexican, and Thai foods that dominate Alberta. If you haven't tried Swiss food, it's definitely worth a trip. If you have, you'll find some familiar names with slight twists. The schnitzel, for instance is cubed, the spaetzel (they call spaetzli) is somewhere between a German spaetzel and a kasespaetzel--regardless, it's quite good. The service is excellent, with the most mellowly attentive servers and staff helping out their small space. Some outdoor seating complements the indoor tables. Didn't try the fondue, but a couple of tables around us were definitely enjoying theirs.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to trying this place. Because they were booked the night we wanted to go, our mistake was deciding to order takeout. We were told to return in an hour to pick it up. The salad was very soggy. I suspect it was packed soon after our order was taken, and left to sit for the duration. The entrees were fine. I'm sure our experience would be better if we dined at the restaurant, so my tip would be to avoid takeout with this place. I'm willing to try it again when I'm back in the area.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. The food is good for your soul, and it won't break your bank. Seating is limited so reservations are highly recommended because you don't want to miss out on this special place.

Yelp
My wife and I finally had a chance to return to this wonderful restaurant. It has been at least a couple of years (pre-covid) since we've eaten here and I am just as satisfied with the food as well as the service now as I ever was. Even after a couple of years the staff still remembered us by name and wondered where we've been all this time. It was more like visiting long lost old friends rather than dining out. Swiss Hibiscus is literally a 3 hour drive for my wife and I (we live in Roseburg, OR) but we gladly make the trip to eat here and have made this trip numerous times for the sole reason of eating at this establishment. The food is that good. You guys are STILL awesome!!

Yelp
This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend when I can to Portland recently. I've never had Swiss food, so decided to give it a go, and was not disappointed! We got the Wienerschnitzel and the Szegedin Goulash to share. First thing of note is that the portions are huge! The Wienerschnitzel was super yummy; the sauce was flavorful, and the pork was tender. We got it with the Rosti, which is similar to a hash brown, so the saltiness of the Wienerschnitzel was balanced well. The Szegedin Goulash was my favorite. The pork was unbelievably tender and juicy, but not stringy at all. Super flavorful, and we got it with the Spatzli, which is this delightful, slightly crispy potato pasta. We finally got the cheese fondue. I personally enjoyed it, but I wouldn't recommend if you're not a funky cheese fan. The flavor was quite deep and almost bitter!

Yelp
This place was so delicious and cozy. If you like cheese you must get the fondue + veggies, and the Älpler Magronen was amazing. So so good. Like everything you would dream it could be. We also got Emince Zurichoise which was good but a little more simple/monotone on flavor. Probably you will like it if you really like cream of mushroom, but I think I will try another one of the entrees in the future. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Undoubtedly the best restaurant I've been to in Portland. Very small so reservations are required, about 7 tables inside and 3 outside. The two owners are hands on, one in the kitchen and another in the dining room. Best French onion soup in the country. Schnitzel was as good if not better than any in Europe that I've had. Wait staff were very young but friendly. Prices were reasonable for the quality. Will definitely return next time we're in Portland.

Yelp
What a total gem this sweet little place is. Swiss/German isn't usually my first choice cuisine but I would visit this restaurant again and again if I lived in Portland. From the moment we entered it was positive vibes, the host was welcoming and kind, the service was impeccable and the food was outstanding. Hot bread, delicious fondue, thin and crisp wienerschnitzel, juicy brats, crispy rosti. Everything was beautifully prepared. Five stars.

Yelp
This may have been the best service we've ever experienced. They were able to fit us in between reservations as a walk in, and Bryson did an excellent job. I dropped a fork and had barely picked it up before he had another ready for me. Our order was made in less than 20 minutes. The Spaetzli was a great balance of a chewy center with crispy edges. Their chicken schnitzel was both crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside. Would highly recommend and we will be back.

Yelp
I'm not sure about why this place gets five stars. I give it three mainly because they were accommodating and friendly, but training is in order. I hate when wait staff keeps removing items from table and not asking if I'm done. They must have come over six times taking single items before I could stop them leaving me without a knife and the mustard I had them bring out. Food was just so so. My vegetable beef soup had little flavor and was bland. The sautéed chicken sandwich was small for $15 and the cabbage slaw that accompanied it tasted like cabbage with store bought salad dressing that was salty. My friend got the mushroom gravy with pork and French onion soup. Again, flavor was missing with the soup and the mushroom gravy tasted canned to me. Maybe we just hit a bad night. I won't be back because I wouldn't want to spent $50 on a mediocre meal again. The place is cute, clean and simple offering indoor and outdoor seating. At least they were very friendly which made it somewhat alright.

Yelp
By far one of the best restaurants in Portland. Their pork weinerschnitzel and rösti are AMAZING! The pork is perfectly crispy and seasoned; I only wish they served a veal version like they did when they owned Swiss Inn back in Hawaii. The bread is simple but done right with their signature dressing. The service is usually spot on as well.

Yelp
We came here tonight to celebrate my sister's birthday - she lived in Bavaria for several years and I thought she might enjoy a taste of the Alps. Everything was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. We had the Fondue to start, loved the salad that came with the Rahmschnitzel - and the spatzli were amazing as well. First time here thanks to Yelp, but we will be back!
