"Swissbäkers, a local bakery chain known for its pretzels, has reopened in Allston after previously closing all its locations. The bakery is currently offering a limited selection of coffee and baked goods with restricted hours. The reopening is managed by the owners and their family, with plans to bring back wage-earning employees if business goes well. The chain originally closed its doors in December 2019 and was founded by Helene and Thomas Stohr in 1998. Swissbäkers is known for its presence in farmers markets and its massive Lower Allston location opened in 2013. The bakery specializes in pretzels, breads, and other baked goods, and hopes to reopen its locations in Reading and Harvard Square as well." - Terrence Doyle

Nice cafe in a convenient location on a main street, parking lot nearby. European style, clean interiors in black, white and red (feels like fast food, not pleasant colors and materials like at Panera for example), and comfortable seating outside. It was not busy at 9 am on a Wednesday, service was quick and friendly. I was glad to find a healthy sandwich with eggs and avocado, although it was relatively small. I was hoping to enjoy it on a plate but got it in a paper bag. The cappuccino was good, but served in a disposable cup instead of a real mug. It felt like fast food with wasteful and unsustainable packaging, I thought the Swiss would do better than that. Good experience overall 👌

Google
Fantastic shop, fantastic employees, fantastic boss. As a courier handling package deliveries, I'm always treated to a cup of coffee before hitting the road. Each visit reminds me how much I miss Europe.

Great food for a great price. Breakfast sandwiches are around $4-$6 and are absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is stunning and is perfect for anyone who wants to do work in a café. My order was mixed up with another customer's and the employees were very polite in handling the problem. Nonetheless the food tasted amazing. Will be frequenting this store in the near future.

Local, family-run cafe in an otherwise food desert near the HBS campus. Large and airy place with plenty of seating.. Their pastry selection is awesome, with lots of Swiss delicacies as well.

Love this place. The parking is super convenient. The staff is extremely friendly. The bread is very fresh and delicious. Love this place 🤗

Google
Amazing place to have a breakfast or lunch ❤️ The best coffee in Boston! And super tasty sandwiches 🤤 🥪 Highly recommend 👍🏻 Vielen Dank an den Besitzer für ein tolles Café 👍🏻

Google
Friendly staff and tasty simple breakfast sandwiches. I usually get a bacon or sausage egg and cheese on a pretzel roll or croissant. Both are fresh, tasty, and relatively inexpensive. Love this spot. Coffee is not my favorite but the black coffee still hits the spot!

Google
This is by far one of my favorite cafés in the whole Boston area. The people are really kind, the prices are really affordable, and the quality of food is high. I don’t drink coffee, but I really enjoy their chai and London Fog latte. Their breakfast sandwiches are filling and their pastries are scrumptious. The space inside can be a little echoey, so bring headphones if you’re planning to work there. Otherwise it’s a great place to meet with friends, chat, and enjoy some delicious food and drinks. We love Swissbäkers!

Yelp
Was there on 05.26.2024, around 1-2 PM. Staff were super nice and helpful. We tried an egg and cheese french roll, the two Berliners, the chocolate chip bread (I'll definitely get the name wrong on that one) and the spinach and cheese croissant. Everything was wonderful. The coffee was also amazing (I was able to drink the cappuccino, which isn't something I can say for 98% of caffes). Overall, I'll definitely come again. The vibe is also super conducive to work!

Yelp
Swissbakers offers a solid assortment of breakfast sandwiches, most at $5.75 (the avocado one costs extra). They offer the standard array (egg, cheese, optional protein like ham, bacon, sausage) and some other less breakfasty sandwiches like a tuna sandwich as well. The breakfast sandwiches have customizable bread as well, such as pretzel. It all comes piping hot and fresh. House coffee seems decent. Early morning (7am) batch seems fresh brewed and not over extracted (read: sitting around for hours).

Yelp
A Slice of Heaven: Swiss Bakers Cafe Nestled in the heart of Allston, Swiss Bakers is more than just a cafe; it's a sanctuary for those seeking solace in the simple pleasures of life. From the moment you step through the door, the aroma of freshly baked pastries envelops you in a warm embrace, promising a culinary journey unlike any other. Let's talk about those pastries - each delicate creation is a testament to the mastery of the craft. From flaky croissants that melt in your mouth to decadent éclairs that transport you to Parisian streets, every bite is a symphony of flavor and texture. And let's not forget the coffee - a rich, aromatic blend that serves as the perfect accompaniment to these edible works of art. But what truly sets Swiss Bakers apart is the people behind the counter. The owner's passion for baking is palpable in every pastry, and their warm smile welcomes you like an old friend. The staff, too, are a testament to the cafe's commitment to hospitality, with each interaction leaving you feeling like part of the family. In a world that often feels rushed and impersonal, Swiss Bakers is a reminder of the beauty that can be found in simplicity. It's more than just a cafe; it's a haven where good food, great company, and heartfelt hospitality come together to create moments that linger in your memory long after the last crumb has been savored.

Yelp
Stopped in for my first time to buy 2 spinach and cheese croissants and 3 pretzels for myself and family. The restaurant is immaculate, with very pleasant order takers. It's a beautiful place to go for breakfast or lunch (they close at 2p). The croissants and pretzels were the best I've had. Croissant had a warm, buttery covering, filled with a good amount of spinach/cheese with occasional tiny red pepper squares. They didn't overdo these little peppers, I only knew they were there because I saw them. The pretzels can be ordered warm or room temperature. Pretzels were so soft and I got the largest size. Some people could make a meal out of the large pretzel alone. We also waved to Lucerne, the red cow on the roof. I can't wait to go back and try more of their delicious offerings.

Jaden O.

Yelp
Terrible service. My pastries were completely stale, as well the owner was extremely rude when I asked for a refund. The entire shop is extremely dirty and loud. Not what is was told to be a chill relaxing area. As well I learned the owner owed over 1.5 thousand dollars to first generation immigrants for dry cleaning services. And didn't pay until 4 years after he racked up the debt. Terrible food, disgusting environment, scumbag owner Never eat here again especially due to the fact that they just got shut down recently for health issues and sanitation problems.

Sean H.

Yelp
Sampled several items on the menu and they were all great! Would definitely recommend the croissant sandwiches

Farhad H.

Yelp
It is a great location and nice atmosphere to work or hang out with friends. The Wi-Fi is fast to work. I got the ham and cheese croissant and it was very good. The owner who got my order was super nice and friendly. Highly recommended the place.

Leah F.

Yelp
Love this place, the sandwiches are delicious (specifically the bacon, egg, cheese, avocado) and the cold brew is great. Staff are always helpful and kind. I love supporting this business! Would recommend.

Shanara M.

Yelp
I'm always on the prowl for a good cafe, and this one truly blew me away. The staff was so kind and patient with us, despite the fact that we came right before closing. I had the ham and cheese on a pretzel roll with a hazelnut latte and it was SOO delicious. My partner had the Bacon Egg and Cheese and the iced cinnamon latte, and it was incredible as well! We were already going to come back based on the quality of the food, but the owner came out and gave us EXTRA pastries!! This was probably one of the best experiences I've had at a cafe, and I would recommend them to anyone!

Alana K.

Yelp
I came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. The inside of the cafe is very spacious and there is outside seating, as well. I ordered the chocoweggli and a coffee. I've never heard of chocoweggli before but figured I'd try it out. I was pleasantly surprised; what's not to like about a soft bread roll studded with chocolate? The coffee was decent. Overall, I had a good experience. The staff were friendly and engaging. The quality of the products was good, although not outstanding. That being said, I think Swissbäkers is a great option for anyone looking for a quick and affordable bite to eat.

Shawn W.

Yelp
Super delicious baked goods and such a pleasant experience with the employee/owner (I assume). I came in to check it out while visiting nearby Watertown. The shop is super clean and has plenty of seating. They bake fresh items all day long and it smells delicious . I got a ham and cheese croissant, and it was absolutely delicious! Light and flaky croissant with a nice slice of ham (not skimpy like most places). I also got an almond croissant to try later. The coffee is very good, too. I'll be back here again, especially since there's a Trader Joe's across the street! Try this wonderful bakery...you won't be disappointed.

Ash S.

Yelp
There was a time when I loved coming here. That time has long since passed. The old Swiss owner must have sold the place. Placed an order for one sandwich to go. Got it wrong. Went back in to have it corrected. Got it wrong again. Said ok, just give me a side and I'll correct it myself. Only got a side of attitude. If you like wasting 30 minutes of your day, this will be your place.

Gloria H.

Yelp
I happened to see a photo of Swissbäkers pastries and was immediately fixated on the Chocoweggli. It looked so similar to a Schokoladen brötchen I used to eat every day in Germany and I decided I had to go try it out. We got the Chocoweggli ($2.50) and the raspberry Berliner ($2.50). The chocoweggli was a disappointment -- there were barely any chocolate chips, so we ended up just eating mediocre bread. Certainly not the chocolate bread of my past. The Berliner was a lot of dough and needed more jelly as well. Overall the prices are pretty reasonable for pastries in the area, but the quality is correspondingly not great. You can definitely get better pastries at Trader Joe's down the street.

Audrey S.

Yelp
My food was tasteless. I had an egg and cheese with avocado on a pretzel bun. This sandwich had no flavor the egg was bland. There was nothing special about the pretzel bun. I also got the gluten feee banana and chocolate chip muffin. I never tasted banana. I wish I could get my money back. What's disappointing breakfast!

Hubert H.

Yelp
Not super impressed with their goods. The croissant runs stale, tough, and uninspiring. The flavoring too is somewhat off - sometimes a bit too toasty, other times not toasty enough. I've also had catered versions of their stuff at various events, and I get the same impression.

Savannah B.

Yelp
I ordered a vanilla latte with oat milk and a Bacon, egg, and cheese which entails applewood smoked bacon, a scrambled egg patty, and swiss cheese on your choice of French roll, pretzel roll, or croissant. I opted for the pretzel roll, and I am so glad I did! Everything was so fresh and delicious! I savored every single bite. The staff here was also friendly and engaging. The inside is so cute, and the outside has a nice seating area. We took out food to go this time, but when we're back in the area, I would love to eat inside.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Amazing, affordable food and friendly faces! The croissants are delicious and filling, great sandwiches!

Jai D.

Yelp
This review is long overdue. I visited Swissbäkers before the pandemic started for the first time, and it was an absolutely lovely experience. The man at the counter who was overseeing everything took my order and he was extremely polite and patient, willing to answer my questions and suggest menu items that would add to my experience. I got the breakfast sandwich and the hot chocolate. The hot chocolate is HOT. Beware. It tastes exactly how hot chocolate should taste like. Not overly sweet or too bland. The breakfast sandwich was delicious. I almost wanted to get another one, but stopped myself as I already had gotten two sweet treats as well. The sandwich was nicely prepared and it honestly looked cute. There was nothing about the sandwich I didn't like or would change. There was an adequate amount of bread, egg, cheese and bacon. It was quiet the day I went in. Only about a couple of other people than just me there. I hope this business is doing well during this time. I highly suggest you visit. The price may be a bit steep for some, but worth it due to the quality and service.

Chloe S.

Yelp
Swissbakers is a great cafe! I've tried the chocolate croissant and spinach & cheese croissant and they are both delicious. More filling than your usual croissant! Both were offered to me warmed up too. The lattes are also good! My friend recently had the BLT sandwich really liked it, "good tomatoes" and lots of bacon. The quality and prices cannot be beat! I will be stopping by more often!

Tarek A.

Yelp
Swissbakers has a lovely view, and is great for working. Their bakery items are good, and the coffee also good enough. The staff was friendly. The interior has a food court like vibe of tables and chairs, and isn't super warming as one might expect of cafes and bakeries. However, this is offset by its fantastic windows and lighting. Also, the space inside is large, which is a great change of pace from average bakeries. There is a separate room inside for work, and is clearly geared for students to study (the bakery has close proximity to the Harvard Business School.) However, given business hours close at 2pm, it isn't fully student friendly either. Food was alright. The Berliner donuts were a bit dry in comparison to other donut shops like Union square. The taste and texture reminded me more of Dunkin Donuts. The rest of their bakery items have great aesthetic value, but taste wise are hard pressed against competition like Tatte and others. The price point isn't terribly high, but high enough that the taste felt a bit lacking. Of these, the Linzer cookie stood out as a highlight to me. I found their coffees also to be alright, with the only great option being the London Fog Latte. I haven't tried sandwiches, but would be interested too. All in all, a pleasant experience which makes for a nice change. I hope someday there are more cheese fondue & rich chocolate options (best tastes of Switzerland) on the menu!

Felicia L.

Yelp
So glad we decided to stop by this cute bakery. I have heard good things about Swissbakers and honestly I wasn't disappointed! The lady inside was super friendly to us and did not make us feel pressured at all when we were trying to pick out what we wanted. We ordered pastries this time around but will definitely come back again to try their breakfast and lunch sandwiches. We got the almond croissant, chocolate croissant, and raspberry berliner. The almond croissant was really tasty and my boyfriend said that the first thought he had when he bit into it was "yummy!" The chocolate croissant was good too, it was filled with the perfect amount of chocolate inside. The raspberry berliner was pretty delicious and tasted like a donut with raspberry filling inside. One thing to note however is that they do close pretty early (around 2pm I believe) so make sure you go early to grab your pastries! They make great breakfasts and lunches. I would say that Swissbakers is one of the Boston area bakeries that you should definitely try if you ever get the chance to.

Areeba Z.

Yelp
Have heard a lot about this place and decided to get a cappuccino and some bakery items. I got Almond Croissant, Nutella Berliner, and Chocoweggli. The croissant was really good. The chocoweggli was also decent, it tasted a little stale but was good. The Berliner was my least favourite. It was dry and definitely not fresh.

Robert B.

Yelp
Slow service. Average food. Ample seating so probably good for working. Would choose Starbucks over it.

Sherry L.

Yelp
4.5 - slays for the price & close to the SEC. super lovely staff, delicious pastries, decent coffee.

Erin H.

Yelp
So so glad that Swissbäkers is back! I used to pass their booth in the Boston public market and was sad to hear when they closed at the end of 2019. I usually get one of their sandwiches (highly recommend the tuna) on a pretzel roll, which makes for a great light breakfast. Their coffee is light and refreshing and the pastries are to die for. Don't miss the Berliner and the choco weggli. Plus, the owners are so nice and friendly and bring a smile to my face the moment I walk in. They've taken the necessary precautions of Covid-19; guests and staff all wear masks, and tables are socially distanced.

Joseph L.

Yelp
I order the same thing each time I come here: A spinach and feta croissant, a sandwich on their soft pretzel baguette, and a freshly squeezed orange juice. They're the best breakfast and lunch spot in Allston, and there's no place you can find better freshly baked bread here.

Grace J.

Yelp
Are you hungover looking for a pastry with a meat and an espresso that will get you through? look no further! this club has everything: hot ovens turning out fresh pastries every minute, a guy with a swedish accent telling u to have a good day, and a random construction worker in the corner room on his computer. I am a personal fan of their ham n cheese croissants and of course you can't go wrong with a choco bun (i can't pronounce the real name ). Such a great spot!

Amelia K.

Yelp
I had a really positive experience here today. I was having a bad day and decided to pop in while I waited for my bus. The man at the register was so cheerful and kind to everyone who came in, myself included. He totally made my day (I hope he reads this, we seriously need more people like him in this world!!) My chai latte was delicious and the pretzel was great. Everything looked super yummy. If I'm in the area again, I will definitely stop by because it was just such a positive place!! Great vibes all around.

Mel G.

Yelp
I had a ham & cheese croissant and linzer cookie here--both of which were pretty good. If need be, this would be a nice spot for a meeting or to get some work done; there's also patio seating and a parking lot outside (both admitted amenities in the denser part of the city). The baked good themselves were tasty but not necessarily warranting a return visit unless coincidentally in the area. Again, it may be the location itself that may be the ultimate draw.

Bob G.

Yelp
Excellent sandwiches. Excellent service. Pretzels are good. You can also order the party pretzels. Takes 1 day to arrive with heating instructions. Worth it if you have a large order.

Masha S.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Allston serving great coffee and pretzels. Also a spacious inside is nice during covid! For a full review on the pretzel check this out: https://youtu.be/yEmuyQGIL7U

Kumanan N.

Yelp
Wonderful service and a great place to set up a corner office for an hour or two with a delicious soy latte. Their pretzels w mustard is an addiction. Wish they would introduce some substantial vegan options like Caffe Nero's breakfast roll or even a vegan croissant (whole foods makes them well) with Just Egg and vegan cheese w the option of Beyond breakfast sausage. Also a vegan Chocolate Weggli would be perfect. Taza provides a fine vegan mouse to restaurants in the area. Vegan food has lower material cost due to less processing so potentially much higher profits

Max S.

Yelp
The staff is always happy and welcoming and the food is great at a reasonable price. Highly recommend if you're in Allston.

Susan B.

Yelp
Such a cute place- The warm Almond Croissant is so good. Great cold brew coffee too! I wish they had these bakeries in Texas.

Steven B.

Yelp
Really does taste like authentic baked goods from the European countries I've visited. Haven't had anything bad here. My only complaint is I wish the selection was larger.

p e.

Yelp
Great service for a catering order for a birthday party. All sandwiches were delicious, well-packaged and ready for pickup on time.

Gabriel N.

Yelp
What do you do after walking around Boston trying to find one particular store for one particular thing only to find out it closed early? If you were me, you'd go to the Boston Public Market and soothe your frustration with some carby goodness. At that point I had a hankering for pretzels and mustard, so imagine my happiness when I came across Swissbakers. Those delicious little morsels of pretzel looked like just the right amount of self-care I needed. I snagged a couple of rolls from the very friendly chica behind the counter along with a tiny tub of their mustard. It was EXACTLY what I needed at that moment. Seriously, there's a level of satisfaction that you can only experience when you get exactly what you wanted. I was in that happy place. That nugget of joy propelled me through the rest of the day and made me (almost) forget about my earlier misfortunes. This place is pretty damn magical. Do yourself a favor and give them a try.

Rachel L.

Yelp
This place is so unique! Where else in Boston can you work with a view of the Alps? They have delicious pastries, coffee, and sandwiches and are open until 2:00 currently. The owner is always so cheerful and friendly. Delightful spot with plenty of outdoor and working space in Allston near HBS. Don't let it close!!

Ty Z.

Yelp
What a great little taste of Switzerland right here in the Northeast. Took a ride up from Providence just to check it out after we stumbled upon it on Facebook. There was a wide range of goods available from everyday america items such as muffins to more traditional swiss items such as pretzel rolls and Choco Weggli. In a place like this I feel like you have to give a traditional item a try. We thoroughly enjoyed the fresh coffee, the baked goods and the breakfast sandwiches. Had an opportunity to talk to one of the owners, Thomas and it is quite obvious the great pride he has for both his business and his heritage. So happy to have found this gem and look forward to heading back up there soon.

Jessica N.

Yelp
My new favorite go-to cafe spot! Very cute and cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious pastries! The hot chocolate is fantastic. Their coffee is just okay. Will be back to try more of their lunch menu!

Deb W.

Yelp
Swiss bakers is very clean and cozy. It's a great spot to hang out and study if needed. It's fairly large here with plenty of seating. I noticed they also had seating outdoors and a few play equipment outside for children! I got the chocolate croissant which was good. It was a bit pricy but it was also decent size. Next time I will come back to try their pretzel/sandwiches.

Lily K.

Yelp
Casually walked into this cafe to look at their pastries. We had brunch right before and slightly regretted our decision because this cafe had yummy and simple breakfast items on their menu - it would've been a much quicker and delicious meal. We took home the nutella berliner and raspberry linzer cookie(pretty large size!) The pastries were delicious (especially loved the linzer) and the man at the register was so welcoming and happy! We walked away leaving a smile on each other's faces (under our masks). Would love to come back here for breakfast and a hot tea/coffee.

Connor F.

Yelp
Fresh baked spinach and cheese croissant was amazing. The pretzel sticks were delicious and the owner was so sweet he made us want to come back soon. Can't wait to try the sandwiches.

Goku U.

Yelp
I only come here for the pretzel crossiant. They are delicious! I've tried a variety of other pastries through my visits here, but the pretzel crossiant keeps me coming back. If you get it, it needs to be toasted so give it that fresh, hot flavor. Use levelup to gain rewards at this location.

Jinny Y.

Yelp
Quiet spot in the Allston/HBS area that has a HUGE parking lot. Win! I can't believe I've been living so close to this spot and did not know it was there. It's next to a lot of recent construction of residential areas and I know this spot is going to be the next big thing once a huge influx of people start living there. Coffee options are plentiful and there are many pastries - no real food though. A cool thing to try could be the Swiss Hot Chocolate (looks unique - but didn't try it). It's a good place to get some work done and its very uncrowded so you won't have trouble finding a good place to work. Service is meh, but it shouldn't really matter at this point. Definitely a place to try!

Gern B.

Yelp
i love this place. food is good - something for all occasions, more than pretzels and donuts, they have tuna sandwiches, avocado, egg and cheese, and museilli. Fresh squeezed OJ is yummy, coffee is good.

Darren W.

Yelp
What a great breakfast experience. Definitely the best choice for a quick and quality breakfast in Allston. Everything was amazing from the baked goods, breakfast sandwiches to the coffee. The service was top notch as well, very friendly (and funny). Do yourself a favor and give them a try!

Jeff A.

Yelp
Great breakfast! We wandered close to our hotel looking for something to eat and were rewarded with this treat. excellent breakfast at decent price. Staff was very friendly and quick.

Nelene H.

Yelp
It was delicious, very nice service, food fresh and perfect. Very tasty. I love it. Clean and great location

Ray M.

Yelp
We eat here regularly as morning treat for daughter before going to the near GISB. Sometimes I buy for my office and pre-covid had enjoyed their weekend breakfast buffet. Competition in Boston is fierce (Flour, Tatte...) but SB holds its own and is nice small-biz diversion - no app or cook books...
