"I learned that Swissbäkers has reopened at 168 Western Ave. in Allston in a limited capacity: a message on its Facebook page and website says it is offering a limited selection of coffee and baked goods with reduced hours (weekdays 7 a.m.–1 p.m.; weekends 8 a.m.–1 p.m.). The shop is currently being staffed by ownership and family — they can’t yet bring back wage-earning employees but hope to do so if this goes well — and the owners said they hope to clear a few more major hurdles to reopen their other locations and make the return permanent. Swissbäkers had closed all of its locations, including ones in Reading and Harvard Square, on December 4, 2019; the bakery was founded by Helene and Thomas Stohr in 1998, grew out of the farmers market scene into its first retail storefront in 2006, and opened a large Lower Allston location in 2013. The small local chain specializes in pretzels, breads, and other baked goods such as the chocoweggli, a chewy, buttery roll spiked with chunks of chocolate." - Terrence Doyle
