The 32 Essential St. Louis Restaurants

"Nick Colombo, Sarah Miller, and Pat Grosch want to (and can) do it all. The founding members of Switchgrass Spirits almost exclusively use local ingredients at their distillery, including Missouri white oak barrels produced from a family-owned cooperage outside the city; Jonathan apples grown by St. Louis’s favorite caramel apple producer; and locally harvested grain and corn. They also never compromise on flavor despite the laborious, expensive, precise process behind their whiskeys and fruit brandies. Oh, and they’ve built a company that respects labor and distributes wealth to its workers. This might overextend any other group, but at Switchgrass, these principles result in delicious spirits that taste of the place and the people who crafted them." - Holly Fann

My wife and I did not (yet) sign up for a formal tour, but when we dropped by, the Owner was most gracious and gave us a quick look around. So impressed with what these folks are doing, and they are distilling some excellent whiskey -- we purchased a "Bottled-In-Bond" bourbon. Particularly happy to see businesses like this making an effort to repurpose older, existing facilities in parts of St. Louis that will most benefit from investment. Kudos!

Excellent tour! Our tour guide Joe was phenomenal and extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the distillation process. I got a chance to meet the team at the Tower Grove Farmer's Market, and I am so glad to have the opportunity to visit them at their facility where all the magic happens! I really enjoy their wide selection of products and look forward to their new releases.

Great time doing the tour and tasting. Fun to learn their process of making whiskey.

Great tour led by a great guy! They offered a sample of several of their labels and I enjoyed each one o tried. I purchased two bottles as well as two Glencarin glasses. Only drawback of the tour was climate control. Building temperature is mostly control by fans and windows. It was a rather warm day but it was not unbearable, and if I was dressed a little bit cooler myself, it probably wouldn’t have been as bad. I plan to come back and do the tour again SOON, but next time I’ll be prepared with light clothing and a jug of ice water.

Switchgrass is one of the most unique and intimate distilleries in the St. Louis area. The tasting included multiple offerings of bourbon, rye and cocktail spirits. My favorite was a new release of their single malt. I had notes of chocolate and cherries. It is a limited offering so pick thIs one up ASAP before I buy it all. Also the Copperhead Rock and Rye is a must try. You can drink this one neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail. It is a well diversified spirit. It was a pleasure discussing the enterprise with Sarah, one of the founding members. I highly recommend a tour and tasting.

So much fun. Our tour guide, Joe, was so engaging. The bourbons and ryes were really good. We bought 4 bottles at the end of the tour and look forward to adding them to our collection at home. Highly recommend to anyone that enjoys supporting STL small business. These guys are great!

We did the tour at Switchgrass today and it was amazing! Our tour guide Joe provided expert insight on how Switchgrass distills their many different bourbons, ryes, and bottled cocktails. We learned so much and had a lot fun tasting the different spirits. Joe did a great job describing each whiskey and provided fun details on the different tasting notes and flavors of each spirit. 10/10 would go again!

Google
Run, don't walk, to take a tour with Joe. It's not often that you come across someone who's found their calling in life. I believe this describes Joe and every other member of the Switchgrass squad. They believe in their product and cut no corners to deliver the best locally sourced flavor at a reasonable price.

Yelp
This is a great little distillery making some wonderful products! It's in a renovated dance hall, and has some amazing windows that are installed on one wall. The tour is great, lots of information of their process, history and future plans. And at the end, you get to taste their catalog! I enjoyed getting to try their single malts and the premixed cocktails. Both weren't things I would have tried on my own. Worth it to schedule a tour and support this local business! Delicious whiskeys that are reasonably priced and actually available! A great combination.

Yelp
Switchgrass Spirits is a whiskey and bourbon distillery located in St. Louis. They recently opened up their distillery for tours and I decided to do the tour and tasting today. Tickets can be purchased on their website for $10 and the tour lasts roughly an hour. Since I went on the tour, I also got 10% off their bottles when I purchased at the end of the tour! The tour itself felt very awesome! It was a small group of about 10 and the experience felt very intimate. Our tour guide was well connected with the owners of the distillery and gave us a history of how they founded the distillery and their alcohol making process. Our guide was knowledgeable as he was fully able to answer any question that was thrown at him. When we got to the tasting, we were given generous pours of 10 or 11 different products. Most of the products were bourbon, but there were a few whiskey and brandy options. They are a newer distillery but have quite a variety of products and definitely something for everyone. The tour guide even gave us recommendations for which products he would use for cocktails and which products he would consider sippers. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who likes bourbon! The only caveat is that the building is located in a rougher part of town. The general tour and tasting experience however makes up for this for sure!

Yelp
This place is fantastic! What a great group of people and some great whiskey/bourbon! Here are some facts.. Some background: Switchgrass got its name from a native plant! It's predominantly invested in by women. Their operation resides in Wellston, Mo. in an old American Legion hall. Fun fact: Switchgrass got the law changed in Wellston to "you don't need a liquor license if you make your own alcohol." Deviant bunch you know. We like a good disruptor. Ok... some whiskey info...80% of whiskey barrels are Missouri white oak barrels... 51% corn for it to be a bourbon; the bourbon I liked had 24% wheat if anyone is looking to buy me a gift What's whiskey? Answer: Whiskey is beer if you put it in a still. What's a brandy? Answer: Brandy is cider if you put it in a still. Now we gotta find a group to do the Mo Spirits Expedition
