The 38 Best Restaurants in Indianapolis, Indiana | Eater

"On a corner of Noblesville’s picturesque square, Syd’s Fine Foods opened in 1889 as a tavern and a lodge serving travelers from the nearby railroad. The current owner, Brian Knoderer, understands the fondness Midwest customers have toward the building’s history, honoring that historic spirit of hospitality with burgers, pork tenderloin sandwiches, fried pickles, and Hoosier cream pie. Best for: Going toe to toe with a regular on the shuffleboard table, handcrafted in 1945, with some liquid confidence from a few Indiana brews." - Brian Garrido

The food was good. Prices are reasonable. Service was great, attentive, kind, and social. The bar area and lounge are very nice looking and comfortable. The family restaurant section is pretty small and very minimal, so definitely a bar, not a family experience. Overall good.

Google
Popped in for a quick Saint Patties day pick me up. Had a Ruben that was very solid came out quickly and was delicious. Becca did a fantastic job as a personable and welcoming young lady. Onion rings solid just forgot to get a tangy or zesty sauce with them. No alcohol for me theses days just water. Thank you friends!!! Be back soon

I guess the ratings depend on what you expect, and what you're looking for. Personally, I didn't think the food selection was very good. I ended up getting a cheeseburger and a beer. It was a good cheeseburger. They had a live band playing, and it was very loud. They had a big crowd, so it must be popular.

Cool local place with a friendly atmosphere. Unique upstairs lounge that’s warm and cozy. Owner is friendly and welcoming to all the patrons. Will definitely stop by again.

Google
Was here on July 27. My friends and I agreed that Angel was the best bartender we ever had. The bartender upstairs just happened to be the worst we’d ever had, but I just went downstairs to get what we needed (ranch) from Angel (who was way busier), and she came in clutch. 10/10 on her part. Definitely will be back.

Google
We recently had a 50th birthday in the upstairs Howdy Bub Lounge. Atmosphere is exactly what we expected, laid back and plenty of music. Our bartender was fantastic! There’s an updated menu for the catering and the chef came out himself to check on us several times to make sure we were happy. I seriously could've eaten the Zombie Dust hummus with my hands. Our other favorites were the black bean sliders with spicy sauce and the regular sliders with allllll the toppings. Really enjoyed the space and the service was outstanding, including communication before our event. Five stars for the service and because the space was just what we wanted.

Google
My first time was a success! The fried pickles were fresh and delicious! Nice little side salad to go with it too! Definitely recommend the breaded pork tenderloin. The bartender was very friendly and helpful!

Google
Syd’s is a great place for drinks and food. The upstairs bar is my favorite - great addition! Megan W is the best companion at Syds!

Yelp
Syd's is a great local dive in Noblesville. We went there for the band this evening as one of our friends was playing in it. My tenderloin was excellent, I got the onion rings as an upgrade and it was worth it. Wait staff was very pleasant and served us in a timely manner. Her service was great as she bounced around many tables in a full house. I liked the efficient order and checkout process as she wore a device on her wrist. That order was entered into and then when ready to checkout card can be scanned by the same device. Great fun place albeit a little loud on a live music evening.

Yelp
It's a dive bar with many good food & drink options. We came for 'Tenderloin Tuesday' and were sorely disappointed. I've had good meals here in the past but I would pass on this overly thin huge dry sandwich. Pounded too thin, the pork overcooked to dry, tough pork overwhelmed by the dry overly crunchy breading. Pork and breading were without any discernible flavor. Fries, both plain and seasoned were quite good but it's sad when that's the best part of lunch. The service is good enough and very personable, though we were not asked about beverage refills. Past expectancy reputation may be enough for a return visit, but certainly not for the tenderloin.

Yelp
It's a great bar! Good beers on tap, attentive bartenders and wait-staff. It's cool and historic and surrounded by other good places to stop before or afterwards. I like the burgers, wings, and pork tenderloin sandwich, but need to explore more, though they've reduced their menu(for the better), the only thing I didn't like was a chili cheese dog, but I'm particular about those. My wife likes the club sandwich. Lots of cool event like concerts and karaoke also.

Yelp
long time patron at Syd's, but first time trying their lunch special! $11 for 2 sliders and chips (i subbed fries for an extra $1). food came out quickly and bartenders were pleasant as always. glad to have this as my neighborhood bar

Yelp
A group of friends and I went to check out Syds after we visited a bookshop near by. Downstairs was very busy and crazy loud. We were directed upstairs for additional seating. It was so nice. It was a cozy atmosphere. You order at the bar and our table's food didn't come out together. The food was really good. The bartender did forget to key in my side order of fries, but it also wasn't on my receipt. Our group enjoyed our time there and would return.

Yelp
Renovated and now with a new menu (see pic). Through the Valpak mailer, I got coupons so I bought a grilled Cajun chicken sandwich with pickles, lettuce, and onions and with a side of Tater tots and received a free combo appetizer of chicken fingers, fried mushrooms, and fried pickles. My takeout was delicious, and the grilled chicken was wonderfully aromatic. I wish they still had the 2 haddock fish meal. I probably ordered 6 times total, and since the renovation, I have been there twice. Averaging from my experiences, some of the staff could do better. I am rounding up to 5 stars as the chef and food are great.

Kathy Z.

Yelp
Great service!! And the food is great. Don't recommend karaoke night. The gentleman running it when we went was rude and condescending.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Towny bar with great service, great food and cheap drinks. After seeing Syd's from the road, I knew I needed to check it out. It was even better than imagined. It's nice inside, looks like maybe a remodel at some point, since it's the oldest established bar in Noblesville. They also have another bar upstairs, "Howdy Bubs." Check them out when you are looking for good bar food and cheap drinks!

Yelp
Any place that advertises pillow fights I'm in. Nice bartenders. Strong drinks reasonable prices! Didn't try the food but it looked good! Nice place to stop while in town!

Bruno H.

Yelp
I ordered the pork tenderloin and it was the nastiest thing I've ever had the meat was still red I wasn't sure if that was their way of serving it but I took one bite and had to spit it into a napkin. It truly had me wishing I had stopped at the McDonalds I drove by earlier. Service was not good at all either.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're looking for a hole in the wall gem of a bar, look no further. I came here for pregame drinks and was shocked I never visited this place sooner. It was karaoke night, which might deter some but the people singing were actually good! I just got my typical red bull vodka but they have free popcorn which is the high school basketball concession stand salty popcorn vibe which I LOVE. It smelled good in there so definitely will be back to try their food! Plus they had college hoop games on the TVs which is key - drinks and college basketball!

Yelp
Local dive bar feel. If I lived closer to noblesville I could see this being a regular hang out spot. Big bar and a lot of table seating. My mom received a buy one burger and fries get one free email which was an offer we obviously couldn't refuse. But once we sat down and looked at the menus there were so many other things we wanted to try as well! We ended up getting the appetizer platter because we couldn't decide. I'm not a fried mushroom fan but other than that all the fried apps were delicious with a side of ranch! By the time we ordered our burgers I honestly was a little stuffed. If you're a cheesy person like myself, I would definitely ask for more cheese on the burger knowing it is shredded cheese instead of a slice. Also upgraded the fries to tater tots instead. Yum! We went on a Tuesday night and it was pretty busy then and they were playing a queen of hearts game to win a cash prize!

Yelp
Well Syds you have outdone yourself! I was starving and said I want a YUMMY sandwich! You delivered 2 absolutely scrumptious meals. I made my hubs split his with me because well we all know how it goes. He got the melt and I ordered the bigger than life tenderloin! So I took half of his and well I ate ALL of both! We had onion rings and just wow! Let me tell you if everyone does it listen to me now and go immediately and get some of this amazing food you are totally missing out!!

Yelp
We love this place!! Prefect for a quick bite or to sit and have a few drinks. We found Syd's when my husband was working in town and it quickly became one of our go to's. The servers are all friendly and upbeat. The atmosphere is homie , and welcoming. They even have a special bourbon bar upstairs that is loaded with all kinds of goodies. Definitely a stop we make if we are around town.

Yelp
Favorite local bar! The cheese curds and fried mushrooms are chefs kiss. Don't forget to grab free popcorn and check them out for karaoke or bingo! Fantastic service and friendly staff. Love the low key vibe.

Kelly T.

Yelp
Service was friendly. Do not order the food. I waited over an hour to get mine. Had to switch to go because it took so long. Got a burned burger (Syd's special??) and a small scoop of potato salad. And had asked for no bun due to gluten intolerance but they missed that part. Totally inedible. Will not be getting food from here again.

Tom W.

Yelp
First time at Syd's. Great local bar atmosphere. Food was well prepared. Service for drinks a little hit and miss as it was busy. Music was good. I will definitely return.

Chris H.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise. We stopped at Syd's for a quick lunch. I had 1/2 chef salad that was really great. The salad presentation was beautiful, is this bar food? My sister had a grilled cheese & crispy fries. She said the fries were perfectly crispy. The place looked great, very open & airy.

Yelp
Brian has done fantastic updates to this Noblesville staple. Wait until you see what they have done with the upstairs. Ryan Davis is one of the nicest guys around town. I don't always go to Noblesville, but when I do, I always stop by and see my good friends at Syds.
google avatar

Karley M.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a quick drink before dinner elsewhere. Staff was super friendly and welcoming. Neighborhood bar vibe and super laid back. Long bar with lots of stools. Can't Note on the food but we would definitely go back again and try it!
google avatar

Yelp
This place sucks since it's been bought out. They removed the wall between the bar and family dining so it's the loudest place in town. Have seen the owner inside drunk at a table twice so that feels professional. Both times I've been since they been bought they were out of main entrees just doesn't feel the same. Best thing to ever happen to Syd's was when they decided non smoking and this would've been a 3 star place then. But then and now it reeks outside of old fryer oil and in the back by family dining as well. Sorry but this is not a spot I want to or will go to anymore.

Jeff L.

Yelp
Excellent vibe. Spent three hours here Saturday night with another couple. Brews, tenderloin, and Euchre. We walked in at 6p. Place was lively.
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
Wanted a quick bite to eat and the chance to watch some sports. Good regular crowd for lunch w/ a couple specials daily being offered. Will go and try this place again. Good service at the bar

Dan H.

Yelp
Tenderloin was thin and had zero flavor. Fish sandwich was slimy with gritty breading. They need much more focus on their food. Should of gone next door to Erikas. Service was good.

Angela T.

Yelp
We love Syd's! You'll get the small town welcoming feel and the food is always great!

Yelp
Met a friend for lunch at Syds. I saw the PBR on tap and was so happy I forgot to take pics after that! I don't see pbr very often on tap. Parking during the day in downtown Noblesville is an absolute nightmare. It took me about 20 minutes to find a spot. Lots of permit only parking, BE CAREFUL; even some street parking is permit only! This is not Syds fault, but certainly a reason to avoid downtown Noblesville during weekdays daytime. I had blt and waffle fries, sandwhich was good, waffle fries great. I've had tenderloin in past, the sandwhich is a meal in itself. The bar/restaurant is old and dated, but that's part of its charm. Good bar food, reasonably priced.
google avatar

Gary L.

Yelp
I do love the bloody Mary's with tequila here, but the last time we ate here it wasn't good so we wont return for food. I would consider sitting on the bar and drinking a lot of bloody Mary's in the future; They are that good.
google avatar

Terrae S.

Yelp
We stopped in on Saturday for lunch. They weren't busy but seemed under staffed as service was non existent. The cheese curds are delicious and popcorn for snacking was good. Our food wasn't great, soggy fries and my daughters burger was so burnt it couldn't be eaten.

Alex B.

Yelp
Not a bad bar, just mediocre (at best) service. Don't know why I have to ask for a check 5 times but it seems like that's the normal cadence there. Do they not want my money or what?

Lisa E.

Yelp
If your looking for a cold beer they are just fine. If your looking for the bar / restaurant that had great reputation for pub food , etc. Well it simply doesn't exist! New ownership slashed the portions and jacked the prices. The last three trips have been disappointing in almost everyway. No reason to return.
google avatar

Yelp
As we arrived at Syd's, it was midday in the middle of the week. There was plenty of parking. There was 20 minute parking for pickup and disabled parking. As we entered the establishment it was nice and cool as it is summer time. The tables were all cleared off. We sat at the high top table. We ordered beer which was ice cold! The burger and fries were tasty. We never felt rushed! Good prices! Thank you Syd's for a wonderful experience!

Emily M.

Yelp
The staff here are the kindest and most compassionate people I have ever encountered. My family came in today and we had a bit of an emergency situation while there, and the entire restaurant pitched in to help. I have cried tears of thanks the entire day. There is a special place in my heart for Amber and her entire team. As we did not get to eat our meal, they boxed it up for us and we ate when we got home- the BLT was absolutely delicious, as was the catfish sandwich, chicken fingers and club sandwich, but the best was the chicken salad and potato salad. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you, Syd's.
google avatar

Dave T.

Yelp
It's a great watering hike to attend with great list of tavern food. Bartenders were great and I enjoy having a 24 oz domestic beer hit a good price. I have tried hamburger, fries, shredded pork tenderloin sandwich, tossed salad, fish n chips and spaghetti dishes. All were good!!
google avatar

G M.

Yelp
The hours don't appear to be accurate on Yelp. I called for takeout, couldn't get an answer on the phone, so drove to the location. Front door sign said "Closed Sunday." Yelp, when this was posted, said Syd's is open from noon to 9 pm. Later, I found these hours on their website: DINING HOURS Monday-Thursday: 11 AM to 9 PM Friday - Saturday: 11 AM to 10:30 PM Sunday: Closed BAR HOURS Monday-Saturday; 11 AM - Sunday: Closed (BAR CLOSING HOURS MAY VARY)
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
Best tenderloins I've had Syd's is a Noblesville tradition. Great bar and interior .service is great

Phillip M.

Yelp
Awful...the service was horrible!! We know they have good food, but it should not take an hour to get a sandwich.

Nicholas A.

Yelp
Cheap beer, always a good crowd, and of course fine food. The renovations look great, in particular the "howdy bub" whiskey lounge upstairs.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Been coming here 20 years, and usually for the same burger and a beer occasionally. The atmosphere depends on which side of the swinging doors you sit on, as the bar area is in the front of the building and the family area is in the back. There's also an area upstairs that has a great secluded feel as you perch over and look down on the bar. It's a neighborhood place, not fancy, well worn chairs and booths, but that's the draw for me. Fried pickles are always a great start and you'll find the normal fair of Midwest food to include the tenderloin sandwich and several choices of burgers. Best part is no smoking in the dining area so that's a big plus on bringing the kids.

Amber W.

Yelp
We were out of town from Chicago looking for a good time. We decided to stop in syds for a quick drink, to our surprise it was open mic !! We sat at the bar, Lauren was amazing ! Top of the line service, so much fun to talk to and really made us feel at home ! Would definitely go back just to hang out at the bar with her ! Not only did we get an amazing drink and good food, we also made a good friend. Thanks for being you Lauren !!!

Mary C.

Yelp
Rhonda -head bar.tender is awful. She is rude to her coworkers and customers. Food is terrible. Atmosphere is just a local dive bar. Fun place
google avatar

Courtney T.

Yelp
Ok so happened in this dive bar and ok its divey but seems cliquey. Service sitting at the bar was kind of slow. If you like hole in the walls...this is it.
google avatar

Tabatha S.

Yelp
I believe the window says Syd's Fine Food. And that's accurate. It's...fine. Nothing to write home about. Nothing to get upset about. It's just...okay. After seeing the Yelp reviews, I was admittedly apprehensive and went safe with my order. A club sandwich. Hard to mess up and usually tasty. It was good. I'd have it again. Friends got the fish and shrimp dinner...left a lot of fish on the plate but said the shrimp was good. Service is lacking. The server was great but it seemed like she was stretched thin among a lot of tables. Wasn't weird for us to go 10-15 minutes without seeing her. Overall, it was okay. I wouldn't rush back but if someone suggests it, I'll go back and have my trusty club again.
google avatar

Sean W.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this divey, small town, local bar. It was everything that I could have asked for on a rainy Saturday. The food was good, the beer was cold, and the people were friendly. Nobody was playing on the shuffleboard table while we were there, but it is a cool, prominent feature of the bar. The music was good, and it is also nice having the Touch Tunes option. The beer was ice cold, and not expensive at all. I think we got the Tall size and it was not more than $5-6, maybe not even that much. We ordered the fried pickles and the Tenderloin to split. Trust me, that is plenty of food for two people. The tenderloin, as others have described, is massive! It is literally bigger than your head. It was really good, and I loved the fried pickles. I enjoyed my experience and cannot wait to be back.
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in this Noblesville staple, and we were very impressed. We loved the ice cold draft beers (at a nice price, too!), the fried pickles, and the tenderloin sandwich. The sandwich is massive (see picture) and is absolutely shareable. Best tenderloin sandwich I have ever had! I can't wait to go back again soon!

Robert H.

Yelp
New to Indiana & Noblesville, discovered Syd's driving through town. Have a adult daughter named Syd, had to stop, plus my parents owned dive bars in Michigan. Ordered white wine (what was I thinking), came in a small screw cap bottle, suggestion stick to beer or hard stuff. I ordered burger & fries. Huband chicken salad sandwich with onion rings. Best burger I've had in Indiana. Huband said his was awesome. Bartender & staff very friendly & great food. Great place to catch a meal or watch a game.
google avatar

Jerry M.

Yelp
I absolutely love Syd's! Reminds me of a 50's60's neighborhood tavern. Incredible food -- Hoosier tenderloins, steaks, prime rib, burgers, fried pickles & fried mushrooms... and cold beer. Great staff and Rick (owner) is awesome. Voted one of the best bars in Indiana. You have to come to Syd's.
google avatar

Kitty B.

Yelp
I was instantly charmed with the the old-fashioned neon sign they had out front (wish I had a shot of it), it really makes the place look like a joint! We walked in and it smells exactly like you'd expect a true dive bar to smell! You know, stale beer and just a hint of very old smoke that lingers from back in the day when people still smoked at bars? I mean that in a totally complimentary way! I loved it. It's nice, dark and cool inside. The bar keep was super friendly and came over to greet us straight away - full of suggestions and warmth. Now for the food! We had to have the "award-winning Cream of Chicken Soup," 4 out of 5 stars. Tastes homemade with big chunks of tender, hand-cut carrots and shredded chicken. Creamy as you'd like! The nachos were pretty good, too. Nothing spectacular, but still very good and hit the spot! We also had the acclaimed Fried Pickles. I love fried pickles. These were different than I'd had before. Rather than dill pickles these were sliced hamburger pickles. It was nice to have something a little different. They serve them with a creamy, spicy mustard. Had a nice lazy lunch and enjoyed ourselves very much! Just go in expecting an actual dive bar that's been around forever, not a contrived and curated idea-of-a-dive-bar place. This is a real deal dive bar :)

Julie C.

Yelp
Unfortunately my husband and I both said our Syd's Days are over. Last night we went for a drink and dinner and the food was pretty bad and it took forever for it to come out. One of the guests with us ordered and the waitress advised her against that item. She picked something else. The waitress returned to say that new items is out - they had returned it to the vendor. Once all food made it to the table it was cold or burnt (like still frozen beans on top of nachos) and wings that were burnt chicken tenders soaked in buffalo sauce. We aren't usually one to complain or write a review. We hope they figure it out before others have the same experience we did.
google avatar

Lauren T.

Yelp
I was originally going to give Syd's a 3 star rating but my husband and I both got food poisoning from Syd's which brings my review down to one star. I really wanted to like this place because it's so close to where we live. This place was SO expensive for bar food. $9 for fried pickles? Texas Roadhouse doesn't even charge that much. We got the tenderloin and the Phil key cheesesteak sandwich. I will never come back to this location.
