37 Top Chinese Restaurants Open in NYC Right Now

"This nine-year-old restaurant is a South Slope favorite, with fans particularly recommending the menu section called Authentic Szechuan Dishes. Many items therein use Sichuan peppercorns; in that section find beef and Napa cabbage with roasted chile, double-cooked streaky pork with spicy Sichuan capsicum, and smoky hot beef with dried tofu. Priced well under $10, lunch specials are a particularly good deal, each entree including fried rice and a choice of soups. Call (718) 788-0788 to order." - Robert Sietsema, Eater Staff

Guys, there has to be much better Chinese in Park Slope. I never leave reviews but I've been here at least 3 times and the food just isn't good. I ordered broccoli beef and honestly threw it out after one bite. I don't want to be harsh but it just isn't good food. I keep hearing they used to be good and the new ownership really made things fall off. I've given up on this place honestly.

Google
I initially reviewed this place highly, but after eating a few more meals here I have to revise my review. The food is really not that great -- very oily and taste is minimal. The meat is low quality, stringy and tough. The breading is soft and not crispy, like it's barely been fried. On top of that they miss items and ask for tips when you pick up the items yourself and are not served. Workers are not that friendly. The main positive is that for New York City it's relatively inexpensive, but the last few times I've ordered from here I've regretted it.

Updated in 2024: We are still enthousiastic customers. The food is wonderful and the service cordial and attentive. Eating in continues to be an excellent option - our party of eleven had a variety of dishes, each being a unique and satisfying culinary experience. Highly recommended! The last two reviews given to this restaurant are quite strange. Disregard them. This is a very nice place, with excellent food and kind and efficient people. Fast delivery.

I ordered here for the first time Yesterday afternoon. First the service....the woman who took my order had a scowl on her face the entire time I was ordering. I did have a feeling that perhaps I should not buy from her b/c the scowl on her face seemed to say "why are you here?"...but I ignored my instinct. I ordered food for myself and my Mom. When we returned home, I was shocked at how the fried chicken looked. Shocked. I have fried chicken wings from chinese restaurants in the past....something they usually do well. I couldn't believe how it looked. I should have taken a picture and posted it. My mom in the interim, asked me whether I thought it looked cooked. Then the other dishes.....my mom looked at me and said, "I am really sorry to tell you this but this is the absolute worst chinese food I have ever had". Frankly, it was terrible. I told my mom that while I was ordering the woman had a scowl and frown on her face which made me 2nd guess my decision myself but I ignored my instinct. I shouldn't have. This place makes terrible food.

I ordered from here for the first time today, but never again. The Kung-po chicken had no vegetables, the meat was completely different from mashol (although it is a favorite dish and I have eaten it in many places) and I didn't really like it. The mandarin duck was well cooked, but soaked in fat, so it was inedible. The lu mei was maybe relatively acceptable (although it is quite difficult to spoil that). And the chicken wings were a complete let down. I got 8 pieces of chicken wings, which were actually only four pieces, exactly 8 pieces and not whole chicken wings, but just pieces. So from my side this restaurant is horrible.. And the price is also higher than usual. You can buy much better food elsewhere for this money! If I could, I would ask for my money back.

Google
This ain’t no half duck, it’s two dry skinny salty legs without the thighs and when you lift the skin to get to the breast, surprise! It’s lettuce. The only part of the breast they gave me was the skin. Ha and the Chinese pancakes - surprise! - are Mexican flour tortilla folded to fit in their chow mein container. On a positive note, Sautéd brocolis we’re actual brocolis, so that was nice.

Today I went here with my friends. It was an amazing experience. The service is wonderful. Our server was prompt, attentive, sweet and had a great energy. They are taking all of the necessary precautions for Covid which made us feel very safe and comfortable. The FOOD WAS AWESOME! We had the Wonton Soup, Egg Rolls, Lo Mein, Sesame Chicken and Broccoli with Brown Sauce. The EGG ROLLS were really nothing short of perfection. The Wonton Soup -WOW! Sesame chicken WOW WOW WOW. Broccoli SO YUMMY! I cannot wait to come back! Very pleased! I even ordered food to-go after eating our meal! All people in our party LOVED it!

The worse chicken wings I ever had not even a full wing and they seem to be bruised chicken . The batter looks white no flavor and taste less.👎🏾😒

Yelp
I'll start by saying this is one of our favorite restaurants. They still hold on to the old school Chinese food. Their rice is not the tasteless super yellow rice that most Chinese restaurants have now. I'm pretty surprised that they have such a low score on Yelp...I must say, their service is subpar. Food: the food is delicious. It's tasty, perfectly cooked. We have ordered various items from their menu and everything is just so good. Their egg fried rice is delicious, their string beans are perfectly cooked, their shrimp and broccoli is very good (they use the large shrimp..yay lol), their chicken broccoli is good, not really the beef broccoli though. It's a bit under cooked and gummy. Their tofu and broccoli is super good and so is their cumin lamb. Ambiance: The ambiance is relaxed. Quiet. Usually a few tables are occupied. Service: Their service....its not that great. They are not attentive, not very friendly. But it's not to the point that I feel unwanted and would not go again. I recommend this restaurant to large groups, families, and couples. If you do not want to deal with a little rudeness/coldness from the servers, then I recommend ordering take out because their food is pretty good.

Yelp
Omg I have never been to a place that was so unprofessional. I have been a regular here, usually come for the shrimp dumplings the chicken isn't good. Whatever today I just wanted dumpling and that's all it's $7.89 so that's what I payed that's all I got mind you the server came to my table only twice to take my order and give me my dumpling this guy didn't smile or anything but had the audacity to harass me for tip. He literally came up to me say " tip give me tip", "I serve you give me tip" being so aggressive and harsh towards me I try explaining I'm not obligated to tip ( I always tip though, I didn't today because I only got dumplings and my bill didn't even come out to $10 ) not even the point, tipping isn't obligated anyways when I went to the manager to explain what had happen the lady in the front with glasses she was so dismissive and rude. I was honestly caught off guard by the entire situation, absolutely disgusting behavior I would never give a dollar to this place again! Save your money and go else where. I wish dumpling and things was still around this would have never happened with them.

Yelp
Some good sit down Chinese food. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn. Try a combo meal.

Yelp
I've been going to Szechuan Delight for however many years that they've been open, which I'm guessing is over 20 years. It's a standard dine-in Chinese restaurant. There's nothing exceptional about the setting, but they make a particular dish that is exceptional, and I've never come across it anywhere else in NYC, and I have definitely tried. My standing order is Crispy Fish with brown rice and a side of broccoli sautéed in fresh garlic... it's perfection... if Anthony Bordain was still alive, I would campaign to get him to try it... it's that good... the fish is an entire grouper deep fried and served over a garlic ginger sauce with peas and carrots... I'm not sure if the broccoli the way I order it is even on the menu... it could be that my order is so consistent that they just prepare it that way for me. Friends have gone on their own, and they've gotten a brown garlic sauce. My 9-year-old nephew, who was a typical vegetable-hating child, loved it. Be patient. It takes about 20 minutes because it's made to order. Don't order it to go. The packaging reduces its crispness. I've hosted multiple dinner parties there over the years, and my guests have always loved it. Please note that if they can't find good-sized fish at the market, they won't buy them. Yes, I now call in advance to see if they have it. If you can't get it on the day you arrive, try their coconut curry soup. It's also excellent. Enjoy.

Yelp
This place is more like a fancier version of a Chinese takeout restaurant. I went on a Wednesday for dinner at around 7PM and were seated promptly as they were not busy. Opted for their dinner combination platter (wonton soup, shrimp with mixed vegetables). The portion was humongous! I was getting already full after the soup and the egg roll. The shrimp and mixed vegetables was really good. Highly recommend getting that if you like shrimp. Service was good and the staff was friendly. The price is decent for the area and the amount of food. Overall, good place. Will come back.
google avatar

Cathy J.

Yelp
Fancy Chinese takeout place is a good way to describe it. This is highly westernized Chinese food - but it's good! Thank you for having so many vegetarian/vegan options. There is an entire page on the menu dedicated to vegetables, tofu, and fake meat. Solid spot for vegetarian general Tso's chicken, though don't expect it (or any other dish marked "hot") to actually be spicy. Despite the name, there's no hint of Sichuan cuisine here at all. The best thing on the menu might have been it's random Southeast Asia-inspired addition: the hand pulled noodles in a vegetable coconut curry broth! Flavorful, warming, and packed with veggies. And they say the perfect meal doesn't exist

Yelp
Szechuan Delight is a wonderful restaurant with exceptional service. My order was absolutely delicious, made fresh to order, and the restaurant location is great for people watching. I'm definitely visiting Szechuan Delight often from now on, and you should too!

Lily T.

Yelp
I ordered food via delivery. I wasn't able to go down and get. I asked a friend to pick up. The delivery guy had the nerve to call and yell at me for not giving a tip. I had the $10 in my pocket and planned on passing by to give to delivery guy. I called the restaurant to complain and the manager said 'next time no delivery you pick up." She said I have to give a tip. I was appalled. Never again

Maryann D.

Yelp
Enjoy variety of menu and service usually good! Their combination plates are a good choice!

Steven K.

Yelp
I just took out an order of wonton soup and Mushu pork. The food was tasty and the portions were generous. It looks like this restaurant is stepping up at game.

Mohamed K.

Yelp
Bad service bad food bad customer service. Bad ingredients. Won't come here again. They ask for crazy tips or disrespect you.

David M.

Yelp
Do not expect authentic or amazing food. But it is a reliable neighborhood restaurant and sometimes almost addictive. "Authentic Szechuan" is better and more authentic but more expensive and not as close to me. So Szechuan Delight is by default one of my go-to restaurants. And I like it. There are a lot of decent things to eat there. My daughter loves their pork ribs. I am addicted to their General Tso's chicken. I also like their Mu Shu pork and chicken. Ask for extra spicy and extra garlic and it helps. This is like going to the local pizza place for a slice rather than going out of your way for the best pizza in NYC. It is convenient, not too expensive, and has its charm.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
Best hot and sour soup in the area. Not the best at anything else. It's fine. Got the general tso's, and while it wasn't bad per se, it also wasn't particularly good.

Jeremiah G.

Yelp
Food tastes like rewarmed yesterday's food. Barbecued spareribs had no barbecue sauce. Chicken lomein was inedible. I did take out. Was told 15 min wait. Food came out in 5 min!
google avatar

Lou P.

Yelp
We'd been coming here weekly for their lunch specials which were economical and fairly good. Unfortunately, the quality of food has declined radically lately..We ordered our traditional shrimp and chicken special- the chicken was horribly fatty and inedible. We told the owner, who seemed unfazed and disinterested. How disappointing, as my husband and I may need to find a new luncheon rendezvous!
google avatar

Yelp
On a beautiful Presidents Day we took out two lunch specials from Szechuan Delight to eat in Prospect Park. The service at the restaurant was friendly, the portions generous and the prices reasonable but the food was rather bland and over sweetened. We ordered broccoli and chicken, spicy shredded beef and egg fried rice. The quality of the poultry and beef was actually quite good but the sauces were rather over sweetened and bland which was disappointing as I had specifically asked that my beef be made spicy. We appreciated and were impressed that they allowed us to substitute egg rolls for the free soup or soda. The egg rolls were pretty standard. The egg fried rice, however, was quite tasteless and disappointing. Part of the confusion might have been language based but because I asked for one fork and one set of chopsticks in both English and Mandarin, I was disappointed to find two forks when we opened the bag at the Park. I should note that when I took my leftovers home and added hot Chinese oil, my shredded beef tasted much better. I'd go back but I wouldn't make a special trip here.

Yelp
Very disappointed, they lack consistency. I purchased a lunch combination with side order of shrimp friend rice for a patient in the hospital . That was pretty good and cost wasn't bad. Later that afternoon I purchased the same order for me at 5:30 pm and it was horrible. The vegetables were old and overcooked and not mixed vegetables at all if that's all you saw was broccoli and mushrooms. I just threw it is the garbage after paying more in the evening than the afternoon. I will not be returning, I live in the city so I was too far to return the meal.
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
Not authentic if that's what you are looking for. Just fast cooking. Spent $60. Scallion pancakes were so thin and oily they were I enjoyable. No distinct flavors. My friend wanted shrimp. When asked on the phone they described them as large. They were small, over fried, and had no flavor what so ever. Very different from what we remember.
google avatar

Marie R.

Yelp
Gee, just look at the picture of seafood soup for two. The broth looks clear, and there is shrimp and about three mussels in the bowl. Looks good enough to eat, doesn't it? Unfortunately, what I got was a different story. There was so much cornstarch, the broth looked like mucilage. There were a lot of mushrooms, and a fair amount of shrimp. Nothing else from the sea. My daughter thought she saw a piece of crab, which only underscores her need for glasses. The moo shu chicken tasted burnt. The scallion pancakes were too oily. The soft, spongy pork bun was, as always, delicious. Go figure.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Usually get my food from this place. Today found a hair at bottom of the tray. Disgusting.

Yelp
Had a very enjoyable experience eating here. This is one of those neighborhood Chinese restaurants that were more prevalent in NYC in the '80s and '90s. The food was good, and the service excellent. We were there up until closing on a Monday night, and the staff never rushed us. A great place to meet up with friends. I live in another part of the country, and I honestly don't know when I'll be in Park Slope again, but I would seek this place out.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Terrific food at good prices. Classic Chinese restaurant decor. Neighborhood place . very good service. A lucky find in Park Slope.
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
Food was just alright. I got the shrimp lo mein and the sesame chicken dinner combination. The combination meal also came with a wonton soup (not pictured).
google avatar

Petrina R.

Yelp
The rice and the sesame chicken were cold. The service was amazing. I just wish they didn't give out cold food with only 3 customers in the store. I asked another patron if his was hot and he said NO. I love that it's a traditional Chinese restaurant. They serve duck sauce with crispy noodles and nice amazing hot tea. Pros: Good food Waitress service Clean Not crowded Takeout Family restaurant Con: Cold food

Audrey K.

Yelp
I'm so glad there is still a decent Chinese restaurant nearby. I love their rice noodle curry soup with tofu. I always buy it and have enough for another meal. The staff is always pleasant and welcoming.
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
I remember back in the day, my friends and I would hole up in one of our parents' places, build a pillow/sheet/coffee table fort, order Chinese food and watch shitty Jean Claude Van Damme movies. This must've been 15-20...days ago. (Yes, we're "grown" men in our thirties.) If you're trying to relive your childhood in NYC, I'm betting Chinese delivery plays a substantial role (otherwise you were doing it wrong). Szechuan Delight is a solid move when you're in the area, and Empress chicken and scallion pancakes should be on the menu. I'm not really sure how Empress chicken differs from General Tso's chicken, but we ordered both (among many, many other things) and they both taste good. And slightly different.

Yelp
The restaurant was a great experience good delicious food. the spice level was amazing. if your into beer try the ufo beer is delicious and refreshing.

Yelp
My wife ordered the lo mein for dinner yesterday and had it delivered, she started eating her lo mein and that's when she discovered a roach in her food
google avatar

Lucy G.

Yelp
Standard American Chinese fare. Decent (if over seasoned, sweeter-side) flavors Big portions. The Singapore Mei Fun was a standout, with a nice kick. Not sure why it's called "Szechuan" as there's not a pepper to be found on the menu. Definitely not a a "foodie" spot, but for the convenience, price and our expectations met, we'll be back.
google avatar

Marlena K.

Yelp
I came here one late night with my friend and I was craving some Sesame chicken ! I'm a huge fan of it and have tasted it at multiple locations, sadly they didn't deliver the flavors! The sesame chicken was chewy and dry. I give them credit where credit is due the sauce is very good but they didn't put much of any in the dish leaving the chicken dry and begging for sauce! White rice that came with order was very good. For the price that they ask for dishes my expectations were higher(it's not the 8 dollar sesame chicken from the corner Chinese takeout). The takeout is very quick and service is efficient, they even put you're takeout in nice plastic containers. The potential for very good Chinese food is there. While it was far from great I would want to try there food again, and see if this was just a bad day for the kitchen. Cash and credit card accepted. Interior decor needs some TLC.
google avatar

Adam L.

Yelp
Ordered the hot and sour soup, fried pork dumplings and the roast pork with mixed veggies. Dumplings were above average and the roast pork dish was good and they did not include water chestnuts like I asked. The hot and sour soup was kinda disappointing. I ate here a lot as a child and it's always nice to visit every one in a while!

R. K.

Yelp
This was a great restaurant for years and then, weeks ago, took a terrible nosedive. The owner explained that there is now a new chef. The vegetables have gone from perfectly stirfried to limp and soggy, the sauces from flavorful to watery and bland. I really hope they recover their earlier quality, but two visits since the change in personnel have been discouraging.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
Can't speak to the dine-in experience, but this was definitely the best Chinese food delivery I've ever had. Everything was a little bit sweeter than it should have been (that's probably for the neighborhood, to be fair), but the flavors were on point. It's definitely still on the American side of the American/authentic scale, in that lots of dishes are drenched in sweet & salty sauces. The shrimp toast was the most surprising success. Scallion pancake could have used more scallion but texture was great. Solid dumplings, too. This will be a go-to for us from now on when we're ordering in.

LT C.

Yelp
Ordered from here many times. Food can be tasty or a total miss. Today was a miss. Order the chicken and shrimp sautéed. There was so much almost raw celery in it. I couldn't take the celery out as there was more celery than chicken and shrimp combined. Sauce was thin and bland. Peas and carrots had to be from a bag. This dish used to be good without all the raw fillers. They should have kept it that way, simple.
google avatar

Philip H.

Yelp
I go to this place very often for eat-in and take out and actually travel several miles to go here. Today I ordered from their website for a take out order and was severely disappointed. I ordered Szechuan Triple Crown and as soon as I opened the bag I could smell the fishiness of the dish and it really turned me off as I wasn't sure if it was safe to eat. We also ordered Chinese Eggplant with Garlic Sauce and was very disappointed with the consistency and tastelessness of the dish. Like I said we usually like this restaurant but after today have to really think about going back.
google avatar

Jacqueline E.

Yelp
They actually received 5 star rating today. They offer happy hour specials. Wine and beer for 3 dollars. I tried the house white and it was actually quite tasty.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
Probably the worst food I've gotten for take out in months. No flavor. COVERED in unnecessary sauce and shoved into the containers to the point where everything was everywhere. Go elsewhere.
google avatar

聃

Yelp
This Chinese restaurant is not authentic. The Sichuan food of this restaurant is a joking. Don't be fooled for the Chinese style decoration.
google avatar

Lenny Y.

Yelp
Soggy anemic mess passing for a Sesame chicken. No texture or crispiness, brown chicken swimming in watery immitation of a sesame sauce with few bits of soggy broccoli. No flavor whatsoever. All this for $13. Next time i'll skip to any decent takeout for $6-7 proper dish 2 stars because I had other dishes before and they were mediocre rather than just bad.
google avatar

Joseph K.

Yelp
Beware of the meat at this place. I ordered a large General Tso chicken to go a few days ago but the meat was too tough to be chicken and the individual pieces, to my eye, bore the anatomy of a small mouse.
google avatar

onyesoh o.

Yelp
We were in the neighborhood visiting friends and decided to pick up some take out on our way home. This is possibly the worst Chinese food in Brooklyn! The General Tso's chicken was tasteless and just dark, even the rice? Same goes with the sesame chicken. Taste like cardboard.Terrible food. Very disappointing. It was to late to go back or do anything as we are in Windsor Terrace. Just don't eat out of here!

Carl S.

Yelp
Unreliable. Food never delivered. Made multiple calls and was always assured it was on its way. No apology offered. Avoid them.

Carl E.

Yelp
Used to come here 15 years ago and loved it. Ate here last week for the first time in a decade and the place has really gone downhill. Extremely average food that, for half the price, I can order at any bulletproof-glassed takeout joint around the city. Won't be coming here again.
google avatar

Sindy S.

Yelp
This review is for a pick up. The food was great quality and flavorful. Their service was prompt. We ordered as we walked out the hospital near by and by the time we got here it was ready. They said 15 mins and it def was 15 minutes. The establishment looked clean and airy. Next time I'll def stay and eat in !
google avatar

Mia K.

Yelp
This dine in Chinese restaurant is very accommodating. The staff is pleasant and very attentive. Your glass of water will never be empty. You can always get a free table with no wait. Your food is brought out in lightning speed. I tend to pass on their fried items and go for the sautéed and steamed dishes. I have been coming here for years and don't see that changing since they are consistent in quality and service.

Amilca P.

Yelp
There food is pretty good, especially their broccoli and chicken, BUT don't be surprised if you find some hair in your food (I sometimes get hair in my rice and chicken).
google avatar

Beth N.

Yelp
I often walk by this restaurant and decided to give it a try after seeing their nice renovations. I really liked this place! My husband and I ordered the chicken wings, fried pork dumplings, and half a roast duck. All were excellent! The wings were fried to perfection, the dumplings had a really nice skin to them that was both chewy & crispy, and the duck had a great flavor. Portions were large, as well, so we had leftovers for lunch the next day. Looks like they're closed now due to the pandemic, so I hope to visit again once they reopen!
google avatar

Betsy L.

Yelp
I have never had worse General Tso's chicken in my life. Unlike the earlier reviewer (did we eat from two different restaurants?), mine wasn't crispy at all -- more like limp and soggy. (I didn't even know chicken could be soggy!) The sauce tasted awful and smelled even worse. My fried rice was also exceptionally greasy (and tasted like oil, too). The only edible dish was the cold sesame noodles -- while not totally cold, they were quite large and pretty tasty. I'm not a picky eater, and I generally love a good Chinese takeout spot. But this has got to be the worst one I've ever encountered. Go elsewhere.
