18 Best Chinese Restaurants in the Triangle | Eater Carolinas

"Another Sichuan mainstay, Szechuan Garden is also one of those restaurants with a bit of a cult following. Chef Zengming Chen was previously at industry-favorite Super Wok down the road. Since opening his own place, Chen has been delighting customers with his expert renditions of Sichuan classics like dumplings, saliva chicken, dan dan noodles, cumin lamb, and more. Keep an eye on the specials board, which may be entirely in Chinese and always worth asking for a translation of." - Matt Lardie

Delicious food. Incredible orange chicken. Beware it might be too spicy for some. The Dumplings and Yang Chao rice are worth a try too.

Google
Was looking for ribs and duck, read the reviews and this seemed like a good place to go to. We drove 25 mins each way. Friendly staff, got our order, went home 25 mins. I ate the roast pork lion which looked like chicken? I think I had food poisoning. My husband had the crispy duck and he was fine. I'm upset I spent $38 on food that I threw away. I only ate a little bit and threw the rest away. So question.... if this is the best yall had..where are you eating at? 😆 I live in Raleigh so I'll stick to the pop ups there ✌️

First time & probably last. Not worth the rush or traffic to take almost 40 min to go and come back when my job is only 2 miles away. Location is hard to get in and out during fish traffic. The menu prices are high. It was nice they called to tell me it would be 2$ extra for "extra egg." They put 1 fried egg on top of my side (pint) of fried rice. The fried rice did not have any egg, onion, peas, or carrots in it all. So they gave me plain fried rice under the 1 fried egg I paid for. Bland no flavor. The rice looked like it already had soy sauce on it because it was that color, and not what fried rice usually looks like. They did not even include any soy or duck, nor did they ask. Why was the rice so dark for PLAIN fried rice. The fried dumplings were just okay, but half of them were steamed and grocery store size. I could not imagine paying 16$ for an entree at this quality. Food really wasn't good. Not worth $13.

Nice Small Restaurant. Dined In. Food Was Hot And Very Good. Lots Of Flavor. It's A Two Person Team. Everything On The Lunch Menu Is $10. Your Meal Comes With A Soup Soup Of Choice. I Got Egg Drop And It Was Fantastic. Not A Long Wait For Your Food Either. Good Variety Of Soft Drinks Including Sweet Tea. From 1 To 10 , I Give This Place An 8.

After reading Greg Coxx's review from the N&O and hearing great things about it, I finally dined at Szechuan Garden on Friday night. The decor is very nice with a beautiful mural of a peacock and ornate wooden sculptures between the tables behind the glass. There is also plenty of seating . The staff was extremely friendly in explaining the dishes and making a recommendation. I had the chicken cashew with vegetables and for the dinner combo, it comes with a choice of soup and egg roll or spring roll. The vegetables were very fresh and was presented on a pretty green plate with a side of rice. My plate was not extremely hot but that may have been because it was close to closing time. It was not cold but I just wanted it a tad hotter in temperature. You pay at the front and the prices for $12.95 dinner combo are great.

Better than I expected! Spicy dishes have a nice zip as well as flavor. Friendly service and reasonable prices. Lunch specials are a good value. We will definitely be back to try out different menu items!

Google
I have dined in as well as ordered take out. Love this place. Food is excellent. We’ve had the Lo Mein, General Tso Tofu and Chicken, Orange Beef and Chicken, Crispy Duck, Vegetable Delight, Squirrel Tail Fish and Sesame Chicken. All really delicious. This is our go to spot for Chinese food.

Yelp
The food was delicious and fast. I picked up food to go and they were prompt and packed with utensils and great care to make sure your food wouldn't get tossed around. As far as food goes, it is delicious and it hits the spot if you are hankering for some great fast Chinese food

Yelp
Bottom line: Szechuan Garden has been a steady choice for Chinese meals in Morrisville, both for delivery and in-house dining. Enjoyed selections such as House Special Lo Mein and Chicken With Cashew that have been pretty tasty. Good service and nice atmosphere noted. The Deets: I have come back to this restaurant recently for both delivery and eating in there. I used to frequent here years ago when it was known as Orient Garden but these days it is known as Szechuan Garden (some of their plates/bowls still say Orient Garden I've noticed). When I order for delivery, I go with their House Special Lo Mein that contains chicken, beef, and shrimp but I usually ask to skip the shrimp. This order is a good portion for delivery and pretty tasty, it remains one of my delivery go-to choices. My last in-house visit was a good one as well, being greeted promptly upon entering and sat with menu ready to peruse. The restaurant itself was bright and well decorated (beautiful back and side walls) but not overly adorned, a nice comfortable balance for a shopping area restaurant. Being a bit hungry, I went with two starters in ordering a fried spring roll as well as steamed pork dumplings. I enjoyed both starters, no notes, nice. For my main entree, I chose their chicken with cashew menu selection. It came as a generous portion with adequate amount of chicken and many, many cashews as well as a good amount of vegetables cooked just right. The sauce was flavorful and worked well with all components, I enjoyed it. Service during the visit was pleasant and checked on me periodically as well as kept my water filled as needed. I like Szechuan Garden as a local choice for Chinese meals and will continue to enjoy them in the future.

Yelp
One of my favorite authentic Chinese restaurants. Loved their Fried Fish Filets with Roasted Seaweed, Stir fried Green bean, rice cake and Stir Fried Pepper Intestine!

Yelp
My fried rice Friday journey came back with me to North Carolina and I have not found another place that does it better than Szechuan Garden. Formerly Orient Garden many years ago, this was the spot we would come for some Americanized Chinese food, mainly their sesame chicken. Today, Szechuan Garden is a spot where I will have my weekly fried rice Friday, or even share a traditional Chinese meal with my family. I can honestly say that everything I've eaten from Szechuan Garden has been delicious. A family favorite is their squirrel fish, a fried fish that is covered in sweet and sour sauce. Their sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. They serve traditional vegetables and we love their noodles, particularly their chow fun. They have options that get as traditional as it can get, and we love that! Now, the fried rice that has won over my heart is their young chow fried rice. This is a fried rice with not a lot of vegetables, and a ton of different meats. It has egg, shrimp, chicken and beef! The fried rice is over seasoned and oily, but both in a good way. They make it the kind of way that overloads your taste buds with all sorts of delicious spice and flavor. It's easily one of the best fried rice dishes in the area, no contest. I've also had a bunch of their appetizers on these occasions, their homemade dumplings, their chicken wings and their Szechuan noodles. All of their appetizers pass the test as well! It all tastes fresh, has good flavor and fairly affordable. I can see Szechuan Garden being my go-to Chinese restaurant for the foreseeable future. Whether you need an Americanized dish or something traditional, Szechuan Garden will serve you Chinese food that you will rave about!

Yelp
Atmosphere with the tile walls takes you into the culture. Home made fresh crab Rangoon were great. I got drunken Phoenix which is breaded chicken and fried shrimp in Tao sauce. Amazing!!!!! Sweet and sour chicken fresh made and batter made to order was great. Pork fried rice was one of the best around. Worth the drive. Super slow but I think it's because not many people know of it. Spread the word about this place.

Yelp
My new favorite for all things Szechuan. Called in an order for Spicy Beef with Soft Tofu and another order of General Tao chicken. The beef and tofu was spicy enough but not so much you couldn't eat the dish. Came with. Choice of fried or white rice. The beef was tender and nice bold flavors imo. Absolutely loved it! The general Thai chicken was yummy, had no sesame seeds or scallions on it which was fine with us. It had good flavor, and just right on the breading. Hubby liked it a lot. Said it was slight sweeter than what he is used to but still very yummy. Bottom line, when in the area and want spicy Asian food, this is our new go to. We will define back.

Yelp
If you're looking for Sichuan food in Cary/ Morrisville area, this is the place to go to! The food is excellent - part of the menu contains American Chinese items while the other part has Sichuan items. We got Dan Dan noodles, Basil chicken and Stir Fried Pea Sprouts With Garlic. All the food items were delicious. We were very happy with our order and enjoyed the meal. This is a small family run business with prompt service. The ambiance was great - not too crowded. The prices are very reasonable compared to other Chinese eateries in town. This is a hidden gem and I highly recommend it.

Yelp
Food: 9/10 - The peking roast duck was perfect. The texture and flavor were just right. - The squirrel tail fish was a little bit too sweet but was still amazing. - Both the fried eggplant and the stir fried eggplant with spicy garlic are great appetizer options. - For the veggie dish, the stir fried water spinach was a great choice and paired well with everything else. Service: 8/10 Ambiance: 6/10

Yelp
Used to go here a lot. It was hit or miss. When a miss, it was still descent but nothing exceptional. A lot of area completion to choose from.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch with friends and had a just okay experience. The food was fine and the portions were just enough at lunch for no leftovers. I was really turn off by the 90 rating here. I would consider revisiting but only if they have an improved sanitation score.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
Peking duck small but delicious. Said it was a whole duck but only 2 bones. Box eggplant unusual and delicious. Waiter very accommodating. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Here's another place I've been to plenty of times and I enjoys the food but never reviewed. Well better later than never, so let's get to it. Inside decor is reminiscent of a Chinese restaurant of yesteryear. But the food is always delicious, hot and always on time for take out!

Yelp
Great food, great atmosphere. Straight bussin' no cap. Peacocks and dragons all over the walls. Bussin'

Yelp
Food is generally good and quite authentic. Just be aware that Szechuan cuisine is not the usual "Chinese" food most Americans expect. It is more highly spiced and can be pungent. Check your order carefully. I have had a couple misfires.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants in the area! Can't be beat! They have a very good menu with both traditional Chinese fare and Chinese-American dishes. Honestly, I have never had even a mediocre meal from them. Takeout or sitdown, the food is always top notch! Their duck and lamb dishes are truly excellent!

Steve B.

Yelp
A good quality Chinese restaurant that is our go to place for Asian. All other locations here I. Roanoke are hit or miss.

Yelp
Not fancy - not too casual authentic Chinese eatery. The service was a little slow, but they were slammed the night we came in. Peking duck was fabulous as was the seafood hot and sour soup. Will try again!

Dinner C.

Yelp
Our dinner club, consisting of 7 friends, recently dined at this establishment and collectively rated it an average of 8.75 out of 10. Remarkably, the highest initial score awarded was 9.6 out of 10; however, the member later retracted their score, acknowledging that they may have exaggerated but still thoroughly enjoyed the experience. On the other hand, the lowest rating came in at 8.2 out of 10. This marks the highest average score we have given yet. Everyone thoroughly seemed to enjoy their meal. One member even said that he would be able to drink a gallon of the sauce his meal came with. We tried a majority of the menu and didn't find one thing we didn't like.

Yelp
Love this place. The Chinese food here is always good. I've dined in, take out and have had my food DoorDash to my home. Always good.

Yelp
Tried a few dishes here recently: Dumplings in Chili Oil - large dumplings, pretty tasty. 3/5 Szechuan Spicy Noodles - Peanutty, with a chili oil sauce. Would have been better dine-in rather than takeout so these could be tossed in a bowl to let the peanut sauce and chili oil flavors combine with the noodles. Still good the day after when cold. 4/5 Shredded pork with smoked tofu: Mild dish with shredded green bell peppers, which is not listed on the menu. If it comes with peppers, I'd prefer China Palace (Durham)'s take on this because of the combined taste of the dish and peppers they use. This was fine, I just prefer scallions or celery over peppers for this dish. Plenty of leftovers. 3.5/5 Parking: Plenty in the shared strip mall lot. Service: Friendly, they were doing quite a bit of takeout and some dine-in. Return: Maybe, if in the area again.

Yelp
This gem reminds me of Chinese restaurant in Seattle which I miss dearly. Service is great. My ultimate favorite is the salt and pepper squid and Mongolian beef. Will be returning when I come back!

Nancy L.

Yelp
Food is always hot and freshly prepared. Service is fast and consistent. If you are looking for reliable and pleasant experience- give the. A try. Their food has flavor unlike many other restaurants.

Yelp
Haven't had Chinese food this good since Chinatown in Boston. Amazing food, people were very friendly, place was quiet and relaxing. GET THE HOMEMADE SPICY CHILI OIL DUMPLINGS

Yelp
We used to go here frequently - especially for their excellent lunch specials. The restaurant is (well, was) beautiful. The tile walls and ceilings are flat out gorgeous! Sadly, I'm not sure we'll go back after our visit last week. The food was good, but not GREAT as it was before. We were there on a weekday with only one other person dining in, but there was a good amount of takeout business going on. Worst thing is it looks and feels grimy. The windows haven't been cleaned in who knows how long. There's food inventory and a rice cooker on tables IN THE DINING ROOM. WTH is up with that? Such a disappointment.

Yelp
Ordered take out here a few days ago and it's definitely a solid place for Chinese food in the Triangle area. We ordered their "squirrel tail" fish, stir fried pork with smoked tofu, and spicy beef and tripe. I have been looking for a restaurant here that makes "squirrel tail" fish, which is a traditional Chinese dish that consists of fried fish in a sweet and sour sauce. I've had it before in China and was dying to try it at Szechuan Garden when I found out they had this dish. It certainly did not disappoint, and I really enjoyed the flavor as well as the fish itself! Despite it being fried, it still held up relatively well as leftovers since there was so much. The other two dishes (stir fried pork with smoked tofu and spicy beef and tripe) were pretty normal in terms of what I was expecting from a good Chinese restaurant. Overall I would certainly order from here again and am looking forward to trying out some of their other dishes!
google avatar

Janki P.

Yelp
2.5 - Nice people but food was lacking in flavor. I ordered the home style tofu combo and it's not spicy at all. Spring roll was under cooked and overall, all the food had way too much oil and grease. Would not return, but maybe it's better for non vegetarians.

Yelp
Very busy today. Had to wait 20 miinutes for a lunch table to open up, then got the table in the corner, you know the one, direct sunlight crushishing your soul through the super thin Venetian blinds by the back door, yeah that one. Roasted for a while, finally moved our table 1 ft from the window so they wouldn't have to drag my corpse out and pull a muscle. Anyway, menu has no detail, and being slammed, the waitress couldn't hear I or understand what I was asking. Was going to get Mongolian beef, but she said it was with only white onions... I says, ok, how about the tri pepper chicken? What peppers are in there? She says just bell peppers... hmmm I says. Ok, I'll have the ginger beef. Got the wonton soup, a spring roll in addition. Wonton soup was blandish broth with a wonton of mostly pasta. Luckily I was thirsty, so I drank the broth. The spring roll was decent. The ginger chicken was decent, no heat, but more rice than chicken and vegetables. Me thinks perhaps dinner would be a better time to check it out more thoroughly.

Onvara A.

Yelp
I've ordered food for delivery from here before but this was my first time dining in here. Service wasn't the best but I think it was because of how busy they were. I'd tried their dan dan noodles, west lake style beef soup, and tri pepper chicken before. I would recommend avoiding the tri pepper chicken if you can't handle hiiigh amounts of spice! I almost died and had to stop ordering it. This time, I wanted to try something new, so I got the fried beef with chili pepper. It was decent but I was expecting it to be spicier (probably because expectations were set with the tri pepper chicken). I also tried the General Tso's chicken and it was probably the best I've had in the area! The perfect balance of spicy and sweet.

Yelp
I decided to stop by for lunch around 11:30 a.m. on a Friday. The restaurant was already starting to fill up. I was seated and greeted right away. As soon as I sat down, I was given fried wonton strips, the kind that goes into your soup. I love when restaurants offers this as a complimentary. This helps kick the soup up a notch! They were delicious! It was like eating potato chips which is addicting. It went well with the egg drop soup. The egg drop soup was on point! It was the best egg drop soup that I've had in a long time. I went with the Tri-pepper chicken off the lunch special. I was excited to eat it but when it arrived, it was a bit cold. I tasted like a dish that has been sitting for a while. The fried rice was also cold. It was called tri-pepper but was barely spicy. I wished that the food was better but I look forward to trying the legit Szechuan menu. Overall, the customer service was fantastic! Shout out to the waiter for doing an excellent job!
google avatar

Anna P.

Yelp
My first time at Szechuan Garden. Pretty good Chinese food. I got the combination dinner which included egg drop soup, an egg roll and orange chicken with fried rice. I also got the dumplings in spicy chili oil. Egg drop soup is a classic that you really can't mess up. The orange chicken and fried rice was really good. I wish the dumplings in chili oil were actually spicy but there was no spice to it and it was on the sweet side.
google avatar

Yelp
Be prepared to wait, especially for takeout. They are HUSTLING but it feels a bit chaotic, they seemed to have forgotten a few items out of peoples orders, including mine. Saw them running after folks who picked up (and already left) to try and give them their food. Food is very good and very reasonably priced, in my opinion. We have zero complaints about the food and would order again, but would just check the bag a bit more thoroughly before driving off.
google avatar

Yolan S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food hands down. As good as anyplace in NY. Everything was delicious and can't wait to order again.
google avatar

Gail D.

Yelp
The eggplant dish had way too much garlic in it and I really like garlic. The wonton soup was bland, especially the broth. The beef and broccoli was very good with the beef being nice and tender. The rice noodle dish with shrimp, pork and chicken was overcooked. There was a very generous amount of food, and the price was good as well. I was able to salvage the eggplant dish by adding rice and some vegetable broth (this was takeout order.
google avatar

Mahesh P.

Yelp
Really good flavor! We ordered a few different things: Peaking duck, Pork Sheswan, eggplants, fried duck, fried shrimp. Everything was fresh. The ingredients were well balanced, perfect mix of sweet and spice. The service was faster than we expected and they kept coming by to see if wanted something else. Will go again.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Great Chinese food, we have the craving for their Squirrel Fish every two weeks, this is the best I can find in the RTP area. We also love their Beef Pot with vegetables and string beans. Their beef and tripe appetizer is also very good. Their prices are also more reasonable compared to the others.
google avatar

Yelp
I had been going to the same Chinese restaurant for over 2 years and wanted to try somewhere new. This place had good reviews so I decided to try them. My boyfriend and I decided to order our go to items. Mine being shrimp and broccoli and his being general tso chicken. We also shared a small plain lomein. The lomein was good, it's hard to mess up lomein. My shrimp and broccoli was good as well but not the best I had. My boyfriend liked his general tso chicken but said it was a bit too spicy for his liking. For these 3 items we paid a little over $40. Although you get large portions (enough for leftovers), I do feel like it was a little pricey. I've gotten the same items, same portions for a bit cheaper. They also don't serve white sauce, for those who love white sauce like my boyfriend. I would come back here and try other items to see if I could find something I really like.

Yelp
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night because you had an epiphany? Yeah... me neither. BUT, I have woken up and had one then! I realize why this cooking was familiar... although it's not the same type of cooking style my mom has. This is Szechuan, my mom cooks Cantonese/Hunan. Szechuan is just the spicier option that my mom doesn't make as she likes to add a sweet or sour taste to it... ANYWAYS I ordered the fish filet with Szechuan spicy sauce. It's more of a soup but it's SO GOOD. It has just the right kick for someone who loves spicy foods. It would give people who aren't too fond of hot foods an overwhelming experience. The fish is decently good with no complaints whatsoever. Another dish I had was Fried Fish with roasted Seaweed. It was amazing!! You wouldn't expect the seaweed to be so good covering fish but it is. A brand new mouth feel compared to sushi. If you want something cost efficient but higher quality, get the General Tso's! Super gooood. Bottom line: the General Tso's Chicken here better than most places. The Fried Filet with Szechuan Sauce and fried fish with roasted seaweed is amazing and I'm definitely going to get them again! Highly recommend the Szechuan sauce if you're into spicy foods, and the roasted seaweed for that mouth food!

Yelp
My daughter loves this place for the food. I need to bookmark it as she puts in special requests for the rice and noodles.

Yelp
First time ordering from Szechuan Garden. Ordered the General Tsos Chicken combo. The chicken was dry, fried rice over fried, and the spring roll was greasy. 3 strikes - you're out!
google avatar

Yelp
Carryout order of moo goo gai pan, hot spicy jumbo shrimp, and beef in spicy sichuan sauce plus side of Chinese broccoli in garlic. The shrimp dish was the best of the bunch, with plenty of well prepared shrimp and good spice. The Chinese broccoli was fresh, well prepared, and plenty of garlic, but expensive for the quantity and quality. Moo goo gai pan was fine, but under-seasoned (even for a dish one expects to be mild and subtle). Major disappointment was the beef, which is listed as including Chinese cabbage and celery in spicy sauce. No discernible Chinese cabbage in the dish, celery overcooked, and beef mushy in a sauce that was more watery than spicy. Also just an unappealing gray underneath the red chili oil. I expected more from a dish listed as a chef's special. Had heard good things but I doubt I will order again. Too many other quality options.

Yelp
Found this place on a Yelp search when waiting to fly out at RDU. Super close to our hotel and some of the best Chinese food we've had in forever. My husband had Mongolian Seasons and I had the sesame chicken combo. The wonton soup was delicious as was my chicken. The portions are huge! We will definitely visit this place again when in the Raleigh area again. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Heng L.

Yelp
It's an ok experience for Chinese American food day. And I don't need to pay it. It's more like donation. The stir fried lamb with cumin had been asked for mild spice but there were still a lot of Mexican peppers out there and very spicy so be careful! Is the whole meal worth $75? I don't think so. But consider this is food from the Far East and authentic, it may still worth trying. Lamb--3/5, ho fun---4/5, beef---2.5/5, soup---3/5

Carrie J.

Yelp
I just had an order delivered consisting of Szechuan Pork, fried rice, lo mein and hot and sour soup. The food had a funny taste and it was very greasy. I have never seen food with such a large amount of grease. I took a double-dose of acid reducer and sent the food down the toilet. I must say the Uber Eats driver was great, I will use them again, but I will never order from this restaurant again.

Yelp
Here for a lunch with coworkers on a Friday. Service: Quick service, we got our food probably ten minutes after ordering. Atmosphere: Very cool wall decor. They were made of full tile! The chairs though are a bit small so I felt squished in at the table. Food: Ordered the spicy chicken curry off of the lunch special. For the price, the food is great, though I would have liked more spice.

Victoria D.

Yelp
Food was so good and reasonable price. Was ready within 15 mins for pick up. We got the combo dinners with sesame chicken, spring roll, wonton soup. All delicious. Crab Rangoon's were good. Definitely will return

Yelp
In an area rife with Szechuan/Chinese food options, Szechuan Garden isn't at the top of the list. BUT, it's close to my office and so we've come for lunch a few times to satisfy that craving. The tri-pepper chicken is just okay, and the other options are basic Chinese American takeout staples (wonton or egg drop soup, General Tso, etc) you can get anywhere else. It's not bad, but it's not great. It'll do in a pinch though. basically, the stars are given for convenience at lunch. this isn't a place i'd come to for dinner though..

Yelp
Just moved to area a couple months ago and was looking for a good family run Chinese restaurant. Very good prices / lunch special and great service

Yelp
This is by far my favorite take out Chinese food in the Triangle area. I get the house Singapore noodles and General Tso chicken and it's amazing every time. The chicken is made with real meat and doesn't taste bready like some do and the Singapore noodles are full of flavor and not greasy at all. I also love the size of the shrimp that come in the noodles and all of their other dishes.
