Best Food Ideas at Austin Restaurants in 2024 | Eater Austin

"This spot has experimented with adaptogens and similar ingredients, prompting the writer to call out: "Kanna, blue lotus, all of that. The stuff that’s less well known than THC and CBD," as an area they'd like to see more culinary play with going forward." - Nadia Chaudhury

Austin’s New Restaurant & Bar Openings

"Taano is an alcohol-free bar opening on East 6th Street. Austin has had a handful of NA spots spring up over the years, but while most of them have operated on select nights, Taano is open seven days a week. In addition to alcohol-free beer, wine, and spirits, they’ll also have a few cocktails made with (legal) psychoactive plants to simulate a little “buzz.” " - nicolai mccrary

New Nonalcoholic Cocktail Bar Taano House Opens in Austin | Eater Austin

"Opened August 15 as a spin-off of an Austin-based nonalcoholic beverage company, this food-truck bar at 1109 East Sixth Street in East Austin reimagines social drinking by incorporating legal psychoactive plants into mocktails and classic-style cocktails. The menu updates familiar cocktails with botanicals such as kava, kanna, amanita muscaria (fly agaric), and blue lotus to promote relaxation, euphoria, and social connection without alcohol's effects; highlights include an Egyptian Mule (blue lotus, a cucumber-ginger-serrano nonalcoholic spirit, ginger beer, lime, and simple syrup) and a Molly Martini (kanna, espresso, nonalcoholic coffee liqueur, nonalcoholic white rum syrup, and vanilla). Founded by University of Texas professor Geoff Smith and Joe Wes after forming their company in late 2023 and developed with mixologist Shaun Meglen, the concept aims to offer a familiar yet inviting atmosphere focused on sustainable, healthy, hangover-free plant-based options. The truck provides ample shaded seating, a selection of traditional nonalcoholic beers, wines, and spirits, plans for events ranging from academic lectures to DJ sets, and operates daily from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m." - Darcie Duttweiler

Taano House describes itself as “an Austin non-alcoholic cocktail bar offering botanical drinks that promote relaxation and euphoria without the hangover.” Taano House specializes in exotic drinks, which may seem reductive but for a newbie like me is exactly what I felt like I was drinking. The Wild Weed, with wild dagga, cucumber, and lemon juice, was exhilarating. Fresh and light, with the right amount of bounce. Kava is a South East Asian elixir that is used for its natural healing properties. Joe has what many consider the best in Austin. I’m gonna be very honest, I have no reference point at all, but Joe took the time to explain the history and medicinal properties. The kava was definitely different, but in a good way. Earthy and opaque, it also had a very Szechuan like mouthfeel. Very nice. Now, as a completely even extreme novice, what’s most comforting is the amount of knowledge and patience Joe, the owner and operator, has for educating folks. I stayed for a while and his confidence and technical knowledge from the specificity of his product to the typical dosages and uses, so many new people seemed less apprehensive, while supposed pros who tried to question his expertise were humbled. If you are looking for a trip through non alcoholic beverages but want a nice experience with the hangover, I recommend Taano House on 6th Street. Confident, non pushy, and friendly. Thanks Joe!

Okay THIS PLACE is so damn cute and Joe is amazing and hilarious! I’ve been wanting an actual chill non-alcoholic place to hangout at after recently moving here and I love this place already 😭 The drinks are really unique and tasty and they have little cards on the table to help get conversations going, too. Such a cool new spot here that I’m so glad I found!

The owners are incredibly awesome and really want to make you feel special. I had such a fun time trying their concoctions and really reflecting on where I am in life. It was the perfect environment for that and I found that I could just have a good time with our needing alcohol. Thank you for giving me a place to unwind and meet new people.

This beverage truck is a gem in this city. The drinks are spectacularly tasty and inventive and the space invites for better conversation. Rarely do you go to a restaurant and meet new friends. The reading library and conversation starter cards are adorable touches. I hope this becomes a mainstay in Austin culture.

I would rate this place higher if i could! Been looking for an alcohol alternative for a long time and the blue lotus absolutely does the job. Joe is also very awesome and has an insane amount of knowledge about all of his products. Definitely give this place a try!
